Could 4.3 code for the radio be causing physical hardware failure? - Nexus 4 General

I just replied to a question in the development thread where an N4 user, running stock 4.3 suddenly lost connectivity to his 5ghz router band, nothing changed on his phone but suddenly he loses connectivity to 5ghz band?
Of course this is a well known issue, impacting hundreds of users globally since the 4.3 update, and it got me thinking that just maybe the actual code written for the Wi-Fi radio drivers in 4.3 was overly aggressive in terms of the capabilities of the radio hardware in the N4 and actually physically damaged the hardware? Code can break hardware, we all know of devices that have been permanently bricked and became coasters - all because of bad code or a flash that went wrong.
What if the radio code written in 4.3 was to maximize signal strength to remedy the complaints of poor/slow Wi-Fi on many 4.2 devices, but was too aggressive for the radio hardware in our N4's causing it to basically overload and physically die? I've read of people who had no issues with their 5ghz channel (like me) then after updating to 4.3 completely lost 5ghz connectivity, and even after downgrading to factory 4.2 stock firmware STILL had no 5ghz connectivity. In my case after downgrading to 4.2 i still had no connectivity to both of my dual band Netgear routers, nor any other 5ghz band router I tried, complete 5ghz failure - downgrading to the same 4.2 firmware that had worked flawlessly before updating to 4.3! If it was just software then downgrading to the previous 4.2 firmware should have instantly resolved the 5ghz connectivity, right? If it worked without issue before then it should work without issue again. Except for many it simply remained broken, so it stands to reason that something else changed - i.e. the physical hardware was damaged.
Maybe that's why Google quietly shot out 4 different versions of 4.3 in an attempt to hide the fact that the radio code was too aggressive for some phones hardware? They perhaps toned down the radio code's aggressive push of the hardware, which might explain why some people don't have the issue, but it was already too late for phones with lower hardware tolerances and the damage was permanent.
I'm getting a replacement device from Google tomorrow and if the 5ghz band works out of the box on the stock 4.3 firmware, I'm highly likely to immediately downgrade to 4.2 stock as I have a strong feeling that its just a matterof time before i once again lose 5ghz connectivity just like the person i mentioned at the beginning of this post.
I suspect Kit Kat to use the same drivers as 4.3 so I'm staying clear of new builds until V5.0.
Of course if people regain 5ghz connectivity on Kit Kat I will stand corrected, but I'm willing to bet they don't - if functionality that worked fine on 4.2 can't be recovered by downgrading from 4.3, it's almost certainly damaged radio hardware, and no new versions can fix that.

Scary but probably unlikely I'm sure google knows the hardware limits of the devices and tests before it releases it. I mean google is generally try to play it safe then sorry like how high they set the CPU voltages.

Google releases their ROM's for numerous phone manufacturers, remember that ICS was the first android version that was cross compatible across all phones and tablets, the idea that it was easy to mass implement.
Consider the price of the N4 - $250 for 16gb model, about 40% of the price of a Samsung GS4! And the old saying that you get what you pay for. Junky screen compared to the SGS4 and other top price phones. Crap audio hardware compared to the fantastic sound chips Samsung uses. And most likely many other corners were cut to be able to release a 'flagship' device for less than half the price of the next major Android competitor (SGS4). It's straight forward economics, you get what you pay for. And I don't think Google realized that the tolerance levels of the N4's radio hardware were as low as I think they actually are, which is why they have been unable to resolve the issue in 4 quickly released 4.3 builds! I think they knew that the first release boosted signal strength in most other phones but didn't expect it to actually exceed the tolerances of lower end components that had to be used in the N4 which packs in all the top features of a high end phone at half the price!
I would never buy an LG flat screen TV, I'd always buy the Samsung simply because it's better quality in every way. I'm not sure why my brain didn't tell me this when I bought the N4. It was too good to be true at less than $250 for the latest Android phone? I think it was too good to be true!!
Let's watch Kit Kat roll out and watch these forums fill with p!seed people who still don't have reliable connectivity, and never will because their phone is physically broken.
Again, the acid test is to downgrade to say 4.1.2 and see if your 5ghz band works and your 2.4ghz speed flies, because it did when the phone was released back in December 2012 when it ran 4.1.1 or 4.1.2. I'm betting it won't work like it did and you still can't connect with the speed and reliability you once had. And if you can't get 5ghz connectivity on 4.3 you won't ever get it again because the hardware is cooked.

Highly doubtful that the radio firmware is causing hardware failure. As for your example usually a phone bricks because something went wrong with the flash or an incorrect file was flashed and the file system is no longer accessible hence a black screen with no boot... or worse.. the the hardware its self isn't actually damaged.

And I think and still think the N4 is a great device. Its fast looks nice. I personally think the screen looks nice.. and takes great pictures. So... maybe you should go buy a Samsung...

A few things.
1. It seems you fail to grasp the purpose of the Nexus program.
2. I doubt Google would release software that damaged the hardware on the latest Nexus phone. That's kind of the point of the Nexus line; development. Not only for independent developers, but also internal Google ones. If this scenario were true, it definitely wouldn't be the Nexus phone that got broken, it would be a different one.
3. Assuming that the Nexus 4 is of lower quality than the GS4 since it is half the price, citing "simple economics" as a reason is just plain ignorant. There is a lot at play here, the two devices aren't in the same situation. Samsung is trying to make money off of the hardware so they mark it up. Google is just trying to showcase Android and offer an affordable top-end phone, so they don't mark up the price. Plus, they make their money off of their services.
4. Head over to this thread and start flashing different radios. I'll bet you 3,000 Internet Dollars that one of those radios fixes your WiFi issues.

So childish. I bought the N4 for thethe same reason most others did - it was sold as a flagship product for what was literally a 'steal'. I haven't had this many issues with a phone since I ditched windows and moved to Android when eclair came out. But I suppose this makes me a Mac fanboy now? Lol.
I actually have never owned a Mac - PC guy.

This thread was started because of an idea, based on a problem that I've struggled with as well as friends who ate all nexus guys.
It was not to bash LG or Google - I've been around on this forum a LONG time and have bought many nexus phones and tablets, and have enjoyed them!
The last Gnex was not priced at the level the N4 released at, yet at that time Android phones had been selling as much as iPhone, I believe around that time worldwide sales surpassed them for the first time. I understand that Google has a different business model focused on selling software (actually their main business is advertising) and want to market their products at a lower price point than hardware manufacturers like HTC, Samsung etc. But when you do this you still cut corners. I'm not alone here in saying that the screen and sound hardware used in the sgs4 is just better. There's no argument. I could have bought one but I'm a nexus guy and have been for a while. I bought a sgs4 for my Gf, she loves that TW nonsense. But maybe just maybe I have a point about hardware failure given that the majority can't resolve it even going back to software that worked before!
Anyway, your recommendation of flashing different kernels may work for a few, but from looking at the hundreds of posts on numerous different sites (most notably Google's N4 support forum), it's clear that the majority are still having issues, me included which is why I just ordered a replacement phone which success today.
You see, I actually like the device - with a few tweaks here and there it can be vastly improved. Screen gamma can be fixed, sound quality too with things like viper.
If a problem that didn't exist on a previous build still exists when going back to that exact build then you tell me why? Something else has changed.

When you say you go back to a previous version of Android, how do you do it? Do you have a flashable zip that you flash through recovery to return to the previous version, or do you grab the factory image from Google and run flash-all.bat?

I've tried EVERYTHING, but with regard to stock images I use ADB to flash the factory firmware, which as you should know basically nukes the phone and whatever used to be on it is gone forever and what you have left is a pure stock phone just as you would receive from Google if you bought a new one (like the new one I'll get from Google in a few hours, running JWR66Y), except my 5ghz radio doesn't work on any 5ghz router (both my wndr3700 & R6300, nor my neighbors dlink, Asus or Linksys routers) regardless of whether it's 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.x or 4.3.
In case you are serious about your bet earlier, I'd like to have a few more bills for fun money, so here is my money ($3K in 100's) - you can see my N4 with this actual thread showing (it's taken with a $5K camera so just zoom in) so you know I actually put my money where my mouth is.
And I know for 100% that in the case of my phone you are wrong because I've tried to fix this for over 3 months using every available option
So if you have time to sit on Skype today and you can walk me through the things you think will fix the 5ghz connectivity issues (kernels from faux, Franco, neo, semaphore, matrix and the list goes on), or maybe you think I haven't thought about build specific kernels like JSS, JWR or JLS?
I'm available all day my friend and as soon as you show me your cash then let's do it, but I can guarantee you will lose.
Heck, it's Friday so let's make it $5K (the extra bundle of $100 notes in the top of the pic) - I was thinking of new rims for my Porsche.

Ok, you're starting to get a little antagonistic here. I'm just trying to help you. In my previous post I was trying to ascertain whether or not you're flashing a new radio. When you flash back to an older version of Android, if you don't flash a new radio, it won't help your situation. So unless you run either
Code:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
or a script that has that in it, such as the flash-all.bat that comes with the factory image, you aren't really doing anything to fix your WiFi issues.
Head on over to the thread I posted previously, here, try flashing a few different radios, starting with the most recent, and see if that helps. In the same thread, someone else also had issues with 5Ghz WiFi which got fixed by flashing one of the hybrid radios. Check this post for the problem, this post for a link to the originally-posted hybrid radio that fixed that guy's problem. You don't necessarily need to use that hybrid radio, but it helped that poster; scroll down the page to read his post after he reported back.

It's not a hardware issue. I've had the same problem with certain hybrid radios like 33/84 as mentioned by the poster above. I switched to 33/54 and it started working okay. It's some software issue. It was very annoying but fixable with the right radio.

I get that these methods have worked for some but not all.
Let's get real basic.
If my phone had zero 5ghz issues on say 4.2.2 (with .54 radio), and then lost 5ghz connectivity on 4.3, then I flashed a completely clean version of that previous Google factory 4.2.2 firmware (which includes the .54 radio) and my phone now shows that indeed that old radio was installed, yet i still can't get 5ghz connectivity, then its not software only. Something changed that's not software, otherwise it should work. The phone has been returned to exactly the same way it was before the 4.3 update, every shred of the 4.3 build nuked as if it never existed. Yet part of it is not functional that used to be fine? There aren't too many things it could be - software or hardware. The software didn't change, I know that is factual as its the very same Google factory stock firmware. So......?????

PM sent. I'm just playing with you mate. I just got tired of people on the other end of an internet connection making bets they can't or won't follow through on. I am no novice and have been around long enough to know that my issue is not fixable. Trust me I've tried everything and then some. After trying all the potential fixes, I also bought a new router (the r6300), and tried 3-5 other routers and same problem every time. That's when I threw in the towel and sent for a replacement.
But thanks for your suggestions. I still think in my case it's hardware as I've ruled out software.

So I just had a knock on the front door and have a new N4!
However, it came pre-installed with JDQ39 (4.2.2), and it connected no problem with both my routers.
Now I have a dilemma. Firstly, if this is indeed a new phone (packaging all looks like it has never been opened), then why wouldn't it come with 4.3 installed? It's been out for over 3 months. So chances are whilst it's a new phone, it was manufactured before June of this year.
I'm terrified to update it to 4.3 in case the same thing happens again and my 5ghz connection vanishes. And it seems that most people think that Kit Kat will use the same drivers as JB 4.3, so even if I wait until Kit Kat (hopefully later this month) I could end up with the same borked 5ghz band.
Maybe 4.2.2 is as good as it gets for this phone.......what to do what to do....

That is weird that it came with 4.2.2, it's been quite some time since 4.3 came out.
Anyway, have you tried something like this? I know you said you tried a few different routers after upgrading to 4.3, but maybe you just needed to make your 5Ghz channel static. I don't know how true this is, but in that thread they said that the channel switching function isn't the greatest at detecting conflicts and switching over. Of course, even if that's true it could just be his router.
I'm sorry, I'm just having a tough time believing that it's a software issue that permanently removed 5Ghz WiFi capabilities on the hardware. I'm sure it's possible; I've seen stranger things. My gut just keeps telling me that it isn't the cause in this case. If you want to, maybe try manually flashing different radios through adb so you know nothing else is getting touched and see if one removes the 5Ghz capability; then flash back. Mainly the .84 that comes with 4.3. If not, I guess just stay on 4.2.2 until the issue is resolved. Maybe a new radio will come with KitKat that no-one will have an issue with.

Let's analyse;
first of all, I do not own the device. I have just sold my Note 2 and waiting for a good second hand Nexus 4 to show up in the local market. So I have no idea of this problem specifically. Just trying to help by looking into pieces.
- First, you should try to find anyone who used to lose 5GHz connection and than got it back. If there is a case then it is not related to hardware.
- Second you should be sure abour wiping every single code on your device. I don't know how thing are done in Nexus world but in Note 2, there is no certain ways of "deleting" every code. Maybe with a PIT file, not sure.
- I know that every chip or device or SoC manufacturer put their own non-software-controlled precautions to their "things". For example, you may choose to disable thermal throttiling of CPU by modifying a kernel but it will still cut the power once it reaches a pre-defined critical heat, regardless of the software. I am sure Wi-Fi antennas have this type of phsical/hardware protections.
- Besides; who would release a "voltage boosting software" without further testing it? (that could happen though, would not be the first time in the mobile devices' world)..
- What else, besides some un-down-gradeable driver or software, do you think, could possibly disable 5 GHz signal of antenna? Maybe it is about battery? I remember Nexus 4, first having USB OTG support but then removed both from advertisings and the sofware due to battery current limitin.. Maybe there is case like this?
- Any more investigable ideas?

Lots of great ideas. I've heard of only a few people who managed to get the 5ghz band back, although most still suffer from much slower speeds. If you run broad searches you will see that most people can't get it to work after they lose it, even downgrading the entire system to a build/radio that previously worked without issue - like me.
Using MrSkips toolkit it absolutely wipes any trace of the 4.3 ROM and any radio association, turning the phone back to how it was shipped (JDQ39). Yet still no luck. Not all hardware is created equally, just like certain CPU can overclock/undervolt the same amounts. Perhaps some radios have lower tolerances and die? It may sound strange, but not impossible.
I'm sticking with 4.2.2 until Kit Kat comes out and will wait a few weeks to see what happens. If people get 5ghz back then it's likely Google rewrote the radio code.

Kaiser Video Drivers...will it ever happen?

I know the good people of class action drivers and also our community here at xda are working hard on getting the video drivers up and running and have come a very long way. I truly am impressed and I appreciate everything that is being done.
I guess my question is more of an opinion from everyone, do you believe that the drivers will ever take shape to their full potential and actually push the kaiser to where it should have been? Also, I know HTC said they will not update the drivers, but do you think one day they may backtrack and fix what they should have fixed long ago?

Do you really think they would go back to something that now has 2 new generations in front of it? Nope, the Kaiser is only a mark in history for them now, end of line device forgotten back there. Except maybe for the repair returns that they might see for some more time...
Of course I understand, why would someone head back in time and fix something that is to them "outdated", but I also know that HTC should know that the Kaiser has a big following behind it and potentially could make profit, because I for one, if they would offer it for 5 dollars or even 10 dollars for video driver updates, would gladly pay. But I understand your logic, just it has always aggravated me how someone can release something that has so much unlocked power.
Even if they could do some development and make a little money selling an upgrade to some, they'll make a whole load more having their engineers work on the future devices and keeping up with competitor's offerings instead of looking back...
HTC made a decision to release the Kaiser without those drivers for whatever reason, be it technical, commercial, marketing or whatever...
The "unlocked" power has always happened and always will, the Kaiser's chipset also supports video out but that is not implemented, the Hermes supported GPS but it wasn't used, those are hardware related that would cost parts to make them usable. The software costs money to be developed, so it comes down to the same.
Much worse, I had a Motorola phone VERY long ago that did not have storage memory on the phone, no clock/alarm and was missing several other features, while those could be enabled just by setting the corresponding bits in the configuration memory with a hacked cable... They even had 2 versions of the exact same phone, with $100 difference, that were totally identical except for a couple more features being enabled (they were running the same software and you could enable the functions on the cheaper one with the cable).
But anyway, this subject has been beaten to death so many times... useless thread.
Agreed. This has been discussed in numerous threads before, please read those discussions and post any new musings there.

[Q] nexus one and gingerbread - past and future?

if gingerbread is the future of android devices, it suppose to support hardware capabilities that may not be on the nexus that has been around for a while.
i really wanted to buy a nexus, but it seems that when android 3.0 is out - it should be followed by high end devices by HTC and others.
i really don't know what to do here...
gingerbread is said to launch mid november - not a long time to hold off.
but hey, what do think? wait or buy nexus now?
That is Exactly what I am doing! The desire HD looks wonderful, but i think There will be a VERY nice phone coming on T mobile with new gingerbread already there around Christmas....Just my guess
It seems T mobile and Google have some sort of special deal when it comes to android, like getting stock android phones.....and there MUST be a stock gingerbread phone coming soon!

if gingerbread is the future of android devices, it suppose to support hardware capabilities that may not be on the nexus that has been around for a while.
i really wanted to buy a nexus, but it seems that when android 3.0 is out - it should be followed by high end devices by HTC and others.
i really don't know what to do here...

First, Gingerbread will run fine on a N1. Second, no matter when you buy a phone in a couple months another one will come out that is even better. The N1 has an awesome modding scene though.

nobody know that for sure...the minimal requirements may suit the N1 but it may lack the ability to perform certain tasks. we've seen it happen with other phones.

true for most cases. to me nexus is different from others by design. that phone feels right. i really couldn't care less about all these samsungs or motorolas that are out there. and other htc devices seem too big like the desire HD that was mentioned.
basicly, the world need a NEXUS TWO!
So you think Google will develop an OS using their development phone, but not all features of the OS will work on the phone they developed it on? I highly doubt that. Google debunked the minimum requirements roomer for Gingerbread, that was nothing but a site trying to get traffic. Do a little thinking on the subject.
If I were getting a new phone soon though, I would wait till the next gen ones come out. I do love my Nexus though!
the nexus one was a success in regard of telling the world "this is what android can do right now". others did follow and it is biting the market share making other mobile OS look like code accidents.
none the less, why shouldn't gingerbread allow "facetime like" video service for capable devices? the technology for that is in the wild. that is only one example. i am sure there are more features just like that.
at this point, maybe it would be smarter to wait.

Whether or not Gingerbread includes a facetime like option is irrelevant to how it will run on the N1. Obviously any phone without a front-facing camera will not be able to do something like facetime. Gingerbread itself will run just fine on the N1. Without going into any technical reasons, just think of this. Of all the Android phones out there right now, the top ones are all in the general vicinity of the N1 in performance. If Gingerbread wouldn't run on the N1, then you cut out these phones too which means only as-yet-unreleased phones would run Gingerbread. So on what basis are you questioning it?
You should probably wait though since you don't seem sure about the N1. The only guarantee you can have is that in a few months from now an even better phone will be released. And then a few months from that once again, and repeat... Dual core snapdragons will start finding their way into phones at some point soon. If you're not rushed then just wait and see what comes out.

Why it is so quiet here ?

Hi,
is there any reason because it is so quiet in S4 Active Rom section ?
On my old device HTC sensation i could flash five news rom a day, if i want.
ok we have a deoxed stock and one nearly working CM 10.2.
Last days, i saw for 2 hours, a S4 Active Miui thread, it is deleted.
i wish me a AOSP AOKP CM & MIUI Rom for our "better" S4.
And i want to flash @ minimum twice a day but it seems i have to wait.
i hope there would be a big customrom scene in the future for i9295.

Yes there is - its called "SAMSUNG". You may ask why? Basically it comes down to this: Samsung announced the S4 heavily and sold it a few months before announcing the S4A. The result: No one bought the S4A because they own the S4 already. Why should they update? In my case the screen and the additional protection was worth waiting a bit longer but for most other users... Also many of them will be on a two year contract and selling their device to get a new one isn't an option (Not just warranty wise).
To sum it up: Samsung released too many devices in a too short time and the S4A was too late.
Also look at their release sheme: totally locked up in the US, more open - but really late - in most of the european countrys. Not very tempting for devs... I sincerly hope for a few latecomers otherwise I may have to learn to program myself :silly:
So im realy happy that LeJays Rom is running
But since my first SE P800 i was always nervous in Rain and sport actions to frag my Smartphone.
Now i am a bit relaxed if it starts to rain or if i starts to sweat
And i think also i would never buy a normal S4 because i dont like the over-colored and blue Oled displays.
So in my opinion the S4A is the better S4.

This x2. I only bought the S4A because I was in Hawai'i at the release time (S4s are around 1k here and S4As are going for $1200 bucks). I was using a Rugby Smart and decided that I wanted JB (or at least ICS), GB just wasn't cutting it any more. Personally I don't care about ROMs, only root so I'm still happy with my S4A.
Everyone I know here either bought the S4 or iFail 5, and now that both of those have waterproof cases the S4A isn't even a consideration for them. They think it's cool that I don't 'need' a case for the waterproofing, but it's not really a big deal any more. Plus S4s are coming available 2nd hand, the S4As aren't (yet).
Well here's the good news:
Hashcode just posted Safestrap for the GS4A I537 (the US AT&T model specifically) in another thread (you can find it yourself) and it works fine so far in my testing.
So this means - TADA!!! - that we can now play around with our AT&T GS4A's at will without messing up the stock ROM which we can't even replace at this point.

Specific for the I537, there are two current ones:
[AOSP][Port]★I9295★ Official 4.2.2 - S4 Google Edition - Feel the Experience of Nexus
which is the one I'm using at this very moment, just got it installed in slot 1 using Safestrap, and I also flashed the kernel modules that Hashcode packaged and are required to get the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc working - the camera does NOT work on that ROM as of yet, it's a very common problem with custom ROMs and different devices, especially a port like that one, so work is in progress to fix it. As long as you can totally absolutely live without any camera usage at all, everything else seems to be working just fine but realize I just installed it and I'm testing features right now even as I'm finishing this post.
The other ROM available is the CM10.2 Android 4.3 build located here:
[ROM][Unofficial/Experimental][Android 4.3] CyanogenMod 10.2 for SGS4A (int'l)
Now, I've tried to install that one several times since last night but it fails on the build check. I've modified the build.prop file to match what the I537 is and should be detected as but I've had zero success so far. I'm not the best ROM "modder" out there so perhaps someone else with more skill and experience could modify that ROM so it will install on the I537 and we can see how Android 4.3 works on it - I'm fine with some of the hardware potentially not functioning as long as it allows for installing it and firing it up.
So far, so good. The AOSP ROM is working without issues that I've noted. Just ran Antutu 4.0.1 for the hell of it and got 22188 - now again, I just finished installing that ROM, it's been rebooted maybe 3 times in the past 30 minutes, and of course we all know ROMs take time to "settle" on a device so I expect that score may go up a bit after a few days of using this ROM. Yes I miss the camera but I can deal with it presently, and I can always reboot into the stock ROM anytime if absolutely necessary.
Just for the record, my "high score" with Antutu 4.0.1 with this GS4A was 25946 right after I bought it, which placed it above the HTC One by a small amount. That put a big smile on my face, but I've yet to achieve that score again.
This thing is a win-win now...
<oh geez, this is post number 420 for me...>
EDIT: Update - Bluetooth is working fine for me with the AOSP ROM as well, just paired up with my Jawbone JAMBOX in a few seconds, seemed to connect much faster than the stock ROM, actually, and it sounds better as odd as that might sound. Perhaps some improvements in the Bluetooth stack, I have no idea, or I might just be hearing things.

have to return rented ipad to school and considering buying this- but have questions

Hey Guys! so heres my situation: my high school wanted to go digital so added wifi to the entire school and made us all rent ipads from them (private school). I graduate next month and will have to give my ipad back. There is supposed to be an option to be able to buy it, but I have always been an android and open source person who liked to tinker so I am looking to get a new tablet. This tablet was on Amazon for $367 for a little while, but is back up to $400. My 18th birthday is next month and should get more than enough money to buy this tablet and accessories. I want to know if there are any major issues hardware, software, or something slowing down development since I most likely will root it. I am going to college next year and am considering the much cheaper older models with the keyboard dock since people keep complaining about issues with this versions keyboard dock. anyone want to clarify on that? I do have a wireless full sized keyboard that folds in half from my ipad will work, but the USB 3 and extra battery and potential to not need a case is tempting. The other thing is if I root and run the 4.4 rom builds (Am I correct it is only 4.3 that is officially supported, and boot loader unlocking tool is officially available from Asus?) will the official accesories still work without issue? I am considering buying this adapter and a micro HDMI to HDMI cable or this miracast dongle to access my movies on my 2TB seagate external hard drive (with its own power source) to watch movies instead of using an xbox 360 or my laptop around home and when I travel (which is at least once a month). I am also thinking of connecting a ps3 controlled with sixaxis app then to a TV for a more portable console for gaming. I have already done this with my LG Optimus G. Also how far along is development? I see hardly any roms. two CM11 rom and a few 4.3 roms but seems only one is heavily customized. I have experience with adding some tweaks, themes, debloating, and compiling (official) nightlies of CM for other devices and was wondering if there is enough for me to be satisfied with a hopefully not overly customized official 4.3 build and might be able to take my knowledge to help contribute to the community if I buy this. if anyone can answer a single question of this long post it would be awesome.
edit: I was thinking since I am just asking a laundry list of questions, can a mod please move this to Q&A? sorry about this
If you like the functionality of this tablet + dock it would be a grave mistake to buy the older versions of the Transformer series. I have owned the 700 for more than a year now and flashed most CM based roms as well as all CROMi based roms to it. The improvement compared to stock is amazing, but none of the best custom roms are as good as the TF701 on stock. The TF701 is gorgeous out of the box and that is also the reason you probably won't see the level of development the TF700 received.
Why?
Because there is way less user demand. This tablet is so good on stock, that only the serious flashoholics crave a custom rom.
The CM based KK roms all have minor issues with implementing the full functionality of the keyboard. It's only special function keys like wifi toggle, trackpad, auto brightness etc that don't work (and maybe never will) and at this point there seems to be an issue with the USB 3.0 functionality of the USB port, but if those are important to you, just flash CROMi-X 6.1 which is based on the official Asus firmware where everything works.
That is my preferred rom for this tablet. It's based on the latest 4.3 JB and it beats me why people HAVE TO HAVE the KitKat rom - I don't see much of an improvement in 4.4 compared to 4.3....
Can't help you with Miracast and the other game stuff - I don't use any of it.
The dock can be an issue. My second one works fine, but it's still something you have to pay attention to and possibly exchange/replace if the known issues show up. I have read about one user now receiving a 2014 keyborad without issues. So there is the chance that they finally fixed the disaster the dock has been in 2013. But I would be watching this...

If you like to tinker I think you'll like this device. As Bernd says it is very good out of the box and my CROMi-X build is what I run as a daily. I'm more than satisfied and my keyboard works fine. I love it.
You could join the CROMBi-kk team if you want to learn more about building a solid rom. I'm on holiday at the moment (typing this in a coffee shop in Japan) but when I get back there will be more improvements made to kitkat as well as the kernels we are using

Okay. So if I get enough money for my bday then I'll get this. Considering the dock price, issues, and I need some stuff for my raspberry pi, I'll get the tablet now and get the dock later. But other than that this tablet has everything I need, and appears to be the best hardware out there and has an even better price comparatively. I'll be watching for the docks too.

Okay. So I can have stability and features when I want it, and have a lot of tinkering when to also. That's exactly what I need. Nandroid and tinker on weekends, stable when I have classes. And if I get it I'll definitely join. Maybe I can join now though and start learning more. And until I get the tablet (maybe next week) I can use what I learn on my og Evo 4g, LG Optimus G, and nook tablet. I'll message you later most likely, but the main things I believe I need to move forward are the updates script and such and how to fix syntax errors so I don't need dsixdas kitchen to recompile everytime I make make a change even if it's just updated gapps, new ringtone, etc. the other thing I really want to figure out is how to setup aroma installer which I believe ties into the other thing. Them learn java with the coursera class I put my name down for and I could start to do a lot. Thanks for the help guys! This pretty much answers everything I need except for one thing. The ps3 controller I'm sure will work, but with the miracast dongle I'm not sure if I would be able to use midi direct straight to the dongle, and connect to local wifi in case I want to stream or play online games like clash of clans or war of nations (seriously check out the second one, it's new to android but amazing on ios). If that works and doesn't have miracast/DLNA bugs like some devices then I'll have everything I need or want. If not I can get a 15 ft micro hdmi to hdmi cable for like $10 on amazon (I have prime)
I like this tablet. I think its great for what you get. Higher resolution, pushes the limits etc. Just dont drop it. Doesnt look pretty if you plan on rooting which is a must if you want to actually use it. Get some depth of knowledge. Seems people cant repair it in some places without paying a lot of money especially after the warranty is voided. They need to offer better service in that area. I guess if you want to void your warranty and root it. Dont buy an extended one. That would not make sense. Correct me if Im wrong. Aside from shipping costs ASUS should be giving lifetime warranties only because they cut and past peoples software which is fine. Just give us what we're owed. :cyclops: LOL i dont know.

Sorry, I literally wrote every reply right before the bell for my next class rang so I had to be quicked. Interestingly enough clash of clans and some tech sites and all are blocked, but xda I can access without having to use my phone for a hotspot connected to my 22,000 mAh battery. And I'll know be the end of next week if I'm getting it or not, I'm going to see if there might be a price drop in the near future to save some money though.

If you're saying what I think you're saying, that won't work with the TF701T as when you unlock it (which is needed for rooting), it "phones home" to the Asus server to tell them that you've done it, which instantly voids your warranty. It doesn't matter how much your hard brick it after that - they just look at the serial/IMEI number and compare it to their list of unlocked devices, and won't touch it.

Dang it. I need to do more research. Someone needs to make a modified version of the program that blocks that. Or if it doesn't require downloading the files during the process and can be unlocked offline, just create a firewall blocking all the addresses or disable wifi. Problem solved. Lol. I might look into it more when I get the tablet.

I don't believe its possible. Unlocking requires a unique per-device key, and there's no way to get that other than from Asus, so it cannot be done offline and without Asus knowing, at least not unless there's a flaw in their encryption etc.

So firewall definitely won't work. And anything to get it working I don't think anyone will bother doing. Not worth the time. Just have to be as careful as I usually am for now. Might not even root it off the bat and see how stock suites me until I want to add a ps3 controller to it.

No way around it I'm afraid. You can only unlock using the Asus unlock tool due to the encrypted keys they use.
However I'm pretty sure a ps3 controller works without root.
Just to give you guys an update I'll have the tablet tomorrow and the case on Saturday.

is it possible to get kitkat with dalvik rom?

If it's possible to get kitkat on our device with dalvik run time, please someone port it.
I hate lollipop. why? almost all the apps on the play store aren't optimized for ART/lollipop.
It's just pain to see my new nexus 6 stutters on apps that can run on my old 5S smoothly
No it is not possible. Someone can't just port Kit Kat because there are a lack of drivers and binaries for it.
Apps will just have to get to the times and update to make it more optimized for Lollipop, or get "better" or more frequently updated apps to follow with the times.

That is actually quite a silly statement.
It actually would NOT be all that much work to build 4.4 for this hardware.
For one, all of the blobs needed can be pulled from Droid_turbo / Moto_maxx. They are basically the same hardware, and ship with 4.4.
Second, qualcomm supports the apq8084 platform on 4.4 directly. I have a liquid 8084 tablet with 4.4 on my desk right next to me right now.
Having said that... I'm not going to build 4.4, because it is pointless.

What exactly do you mean by "aren't optimized"??? As a developer, I have to say that this statement is completely meaningless. There is nothing special that need be done from a software developer point of view to take account for ART, as long as you aren't doing weird and unsupported hacks (which very very very few people actually do).

What do you mean by "stutters"? Is there heavy I/O happening when it is "stuttering"? Do you realize the serious impact that forced encryption has on the device's I/O and CPU performance? Do you realize that the display on N6 has nearly TWICE as many pixels as your "old" S5? That means that it is GOING to take a lot more to keep things fluid on N6 than S5. Something that will be helped when software starts to take advantage of the newer OpenGL available on 5.0. NONE of this will be improved by downgrading to 4.4. In fact, because 4.4 will NOT be taking advantage of the newer OpenGL, doing this downgrade will make certain, even after software starts to make use of it, that you WON'T be able to benefit from it.

If it's not that much work then why you don't do it and prove me wrong? You'd need proprietary vendors, drivers for 4.4 and not to mention you'd need a backward port of dalvik.
Just because they share similar hardware doesn't mean you can just pull blobs from another phone with similar hardware specifications from the same manufacturer then hope that it works because development doesn't work that way
Even if it was possible no one would do it because its a step backwards and it would be a dirty hack.
i would have chimed in a while ago, but for certain reasons i didnt. normally, id say that it wont happen, since there arent any binaries for kitkat and the nexus 6. but guess what, there are! they arent anywhere where the public has access to them, but they do exist. as google had kitkat on the n6 before lollipop. and a very few people have even gotten their n6 with kitkat(when they just selling the n6). so, in the future, we might be able to see a kitkat build on our n6

If it's not that much work then why you don't do it and prove me wrong? You'd need proprietary vendors, drivers for 4.4 and not to mention you'd need a backward port of dalvik.

I'm not going to, because it is a waste of time and I have no interest in having a **** measuring contest with some random person on the internet.

That's hilarious. Especially since hardware wise, the only real difference between those phones I mentioned and Nexus 6 is the screen size. In fact, we know for a fact that those two devices very nearly WERE stamped "shamu" and sent out AS Nexus 6. Something happened between Google and Verizon that decided what size went under whose label. Also, you should see all the Sony blobs I used on my Samsung phone... also a bunch from LG.
But just to make things even more interesting, on what grounds do you claim that Android 4.4 won't run on blobs from 5.0? That same Samsung phone I referred to above running on Sony and LG blobs... is running 5.0 on such mishmash of blobs pulled out from 4.[0-4]. And perfectly happily at that. Blobs DO NOT HAVE an intrinsic "works with Android version X and nothing else" stamped on them.
Even if it was possible no one would do it because its a step backwards and it would be a dirty hack.

THAT is essentially what I am saying. Not the "even if" (because it *IS* possible), or the dirty hack part, because though it may make you FEEL dirty to downgrade, it wouldn't actually be a hack. I'm saying that nobody WILL do it, because it is pointless and backwards.

If it's possible to get kitkat on our device with dalvik run time, please someone port it.
I hate lollipop. why? almost all the apps on the play store aren't optimized for ART/lollipop.
It's just pain to see my new nexus 6 stutters on apps that can run on my old 5S smoothly

This phone would have been awesome on Kitkat. I also do not like Lollipop. It burns the eyes and there are too many bugs. I don't think anyone is going to go to the trouble though.

As far as bugs go, its no different than any previous version. They patched a bunch of bugs that were there before, and added a few new ones. I wonder though, what bugs you think you've spotted? List them, and tell me why you believe that they are bugs...
Just port android 1.5 cupcake and call it a day lol

I am gonna go ahead and just attach it to your post. There is a port being worked on as I post this, yes there are people who want kit kat on the phone and there are other reasons than running cm, aosp or stock. Enough said and more will be revealed in the nexus 6 forums hopefully within the next week we will see how bad it really gets
fun..
to bad kitkat will not work on the n6 without drivers for kitkat. unless its a lollipop rom thats just themed like kitkat.

i actually think you should keep trying, seriously. maybe it is possible to modify the lollipop drivers for kitkat, or modify the n5 drivers for kitkat for the n6. anyways, it woukd be neat to try kitkat on the n6
I thought the Nexus theory was to have the latest and greatest and never look back. Time would be better utilized squashing bugs in M.

My son got robbed of his S6 by knifepoint. Ran my S3 4.3 for a couple days. Verizon Samsung on ATT not a beautiful experience. Lol Ran an old HTC Inspire on 2.3 Ginger for a week or so. Sister gave him Note 3 so he back to Lolli now.

Why can't use it on provider. He has used Verizon Rezound on TMO and S3 on ATT. Not perfect but they work. He bad about breaking **** and never buys insurance.
