[Q] unlocking the bootloader - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wanted to ask some devs if bootloader lock implementation is carrier specific or common to all bootloader locked GN3 models? For example, if an exploit is found to unlock the bootloader on one of the GN3 models - what's the likelyhood it'll work on another GN3 model?

Do unlock codes allow bootloader unlocking?

I currently have a rooted AT&T Moto X. I want to be able to unlock my bootloader so I can install other ROMs. My question is, if I purchase an unlock key from one of the sites on the Internet, will this allow me to unlock the bootloader? ... or is this just a SIM unlock? Is it maybe possible to bootloader unlock my AT&T phone without purchasing an unlock key? I've looked but I've yet to run into any documentation that says I can.
Much thanks for any help.

i'vve seen no sites selling bootloader unlock codes for the Moto X. (Other than that Chinese site/middleman deal)
What you are seeing are likely only SIM unlock codes for sale.
The info/thread on the Chinese site/middleman being back is the only way to obtain a bootloader unlock code for the ATT X.
There is no way to unlock the bootloader without the code.

Does unlocking the bootloader also unlock the SIM? I'm on Verizon, it doesn't seem like I've ever had to manipulate a SIM card in anyway. Is it because CDMA carrier don't use it?

Unlocking the bootloader and sim unlocking are two different things.
Unlocking the bootloader allows you to flash/install unsigned or 3rd party supplied parts/partitions (like recovery, modified or custom roms, etc), and that in turn allows you to easily root. Motorola gives out the Bootloader unlock codes for the Developer Edition X and some carrier editions (like T-Mobile and Sprint). For ATT and Verizon (non-developer), Moto does NOT give out the codes (likely due to carrier's wishes). No one has cracked the bootloader lock on the X yet, so to bootloader unlock the Verizon (non-Dev) and ATT X the Chinese Website/Middleman selling the bootloader unlock codes is the only way you'll be able to do this.
SIM unlocking allows you to use the SIM from other carriers in your phone.
Phones that are purely CDMA/EVDO only, like the HTC Incredible, Original Motorola Droid, etc, do not use a SIM and therefore there is no "SIM" unlocking for them. Those phones have an ESN burned into them. The carriers only accept ESN numbers of phones which were made for them (couldn't take a CDMA/EVDO phone from another carrier and use it on Verizon because VZW wouldn't allow the ESN). Verizon's phone's started using SIM slots when they added GSM Global Roaming to phones like the Blackberry 9930 and such. They were sim locked to Vodafone (Verizon's international roaming partner). They could be SIM unlocked for global roaming by calling Verizon's international department directly and requesting the SIM unlock code. Usually telling them something like "I am traveling over seas and I want to use a local pre-paid SIM when I get there), can I have the SIM unlock code for my phone?" would get you the code.
With the introduction of LTE, Verizon is using SIM cards for both LTE and GSM. Verizon's LTE phones are SIM unlocked due to the FCC rules around the 700Mhz C block auction they won years ago. The Moto X, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, and others are all SIM unlocked right out of the box. Other carriers like ATT and T-Mobile, ship their phones SIM locked, so to put a T-Mobile SIM in an ATT phone, you need to SIM unlock it first. The exception being something like the X where T-Mobile doesn't sell it directly, Moto does, and ships a SIM unlocked version with a T-Mobile sim.

It depends on what you want to do with your phone.
If you want to root no matter what RW pushes to your phone, and you don't mind voiding your warranty... then yes.
I don't have RW, but from what I understand, their Bootloader is locked, and like with Verizon and ATT, Moto doesn't give out the unlock codes for RW. So your only choice is the 3rd party Chinese website/middleman.
There is a thread for RW, and what can be done while the bootloader is locked. Its pretty much the same as VZW and ATT users... if you have 4.2.2 or 4.4 on your phone you can root and disable write protection by using SlapMyMoto/MotoWpNoMo processes, and if you want to run 4.4.2, you can make use of Safestrap (assuming your phone is still on 4.4 or lower to root it). BUT if you already have taken the 4.4.2 update, or flashed a 4.4.2 SBF, you are stuck unless you can unlock the boot loader.

I did motowpnomo and disabled wp. I have 4.4.2 update with root using this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/guide-republic-wireless-moto-x-kitkat-4-t2738233
What I want to do is to get rid of this error message "com.motorola.process.system" ? I did everything I tried on google search.
safemode,
date&time
cache & dalvik cache
But one thing I have not done is factory reset. I am unsure I can do that to keep my root on 4.4.2. That is why I'm asking if I do bootloader unlocked, even if I screw up and lose my root or not, I will still be safe with root after because I have bootloader right?
Or if you can help me with any further information you seem to be very good in this area.

That is rooting, then using Safestrap to make use of 4.4.2... its more involved than unlocking the bootloader and rooting.

I don't use safestrap so I don't want to advise you, and possibly get it wrong.
I can say that once you unlock the bootloader, you can just flash a custom recovery, boot to the custom recovery and install SuperSU to gain root. This can be done no matter what rom is on your phone, even 4.4.2. You can factory reset, flash an SBF, take an OTA and still be able to root it. (of course some caveats apply in taking an OTA see -> HERE) And you can flash a custom/3rd party rom if you want too.

[Q] I'm lost! the xt 1058 and bootloader

I was just about to buy a xt 1058 sim unlocked, just now i find out people are saying that with the 1058 you cant unlock the bootloader, for the at&t variant?... but the phone is unlocked free for any carrier, so the bootloder cant be unlocked in this phone? please help i need to know this
Sorry my bad english
Correct, the only way at present to unlock the bootloader on the xt1058 is to pay for the Sunshine app, http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/request-help-exploit-moto-x-bl-t2828471 but only if your phone's version is prior to 4.4.4, though it appears it's "possible" it can work with 4.4.4

Its a Sim unlocked phone (no carrier) but the number is still 1058, im in Latin America, the phone has no logos in the back, i think only the verizion and at&t versions can't be unlocked... but i dont know, so ALL 1058 have the bootloader locked?
I guess if your carrier can provide the unlock code, but I believe not from Motorola
Just check which model you have.
If its an XT1058, its the AT&T model. You can request a sim unlock code from AT&T free of charge directly here: https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/?#/
Otherwise, buy it from ebay for around 10$
Now if you want to unlock the bootloader to flash different firmwares, AT&T phones (XT1058) don't allow that by getting the code from Motorola directly, so you need to use a tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/request-help-exploit-moto-x-bl-t2828471
It costs 25$ and it only works on phones that have an android OS lower than 4.4.4 installed!
To expand on what @dagoban said...
SIM Lock/Unlock (aka Carrier unlock) is different from Bootloader Lock/Unlock.
SIM Unlock is usually possible by buying the code from many 3rd party web sites on the internet. And sometimes your carrier will supply the code (you may have to meet carrier requirements) for free or a small fee.
When it comes to Bootloader unlocking, that is only needed if you want to easily root, or the ability to flash a custom recovery (Like TWRP, CWM, Philz) or 3rd party ROM (like CM).
For the Developer Editions Moto X, and some carrier editions (Like T-Mobile, Sprint, Rogers Canada, and others), Motorola freely gives away the BootLoader Unlock codes when requested On Motorola's Web Site. In the case of the Non-Developer Editions, it voids their warranty to request the code.
I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and Moto Maker X for Verizon, ATT, Republic Wireless and a few other carriers. For these you need to rely on someone finding a HACK( Sunshine was mentioned) but this can often times have requirements/restrictions. At one time, someone got a hold of Moto's Bootloader Unlock code database, and was selling codes to Verizon, ATT, etc users who couldn't otherwise unlock their bootloader, but this has since stopped.

I assume this is still the case....

But has anyone come up with a way to unlock the bootloader on a carrier locked D5803?

Question about galaxy note 3 on AT&T

I have a note 3 from att (not connected to any network. it is carrier unlocked) is there a way to unlock my bootloader yet? i want to root with no problems like frp lock
The bootloader may not be locked if it is running an older rom, such as 4.2.
If the bootloader is locked, there's no way to unlock it.

Galaxy S20 FE 5G Bootloader Unlock

Though carrier and bootloader unlock are different subjects, if an S20 FE 5G is Samsung *FACTORY* carrier unlocked, can I assume its bootloader is therefore unlockable? If it is, where can I get the unlock code? Bestbuy, for example, is offering this phone with both carrier unlocked and locked versions, https://www.bestbuy.com/site/search...rue&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960&keys=keys
Further, can I assume if a model is carrier locked, then the bootloader cannot be unlocked to enforce the carrier lock?
My objective is to root the phone and also install TWRP. I have no plans to switch my carrier, T-Mobile, and thus a model locked to T-Mobile is fine as long as its bootloader can be unlocked since a carrier-locked one is cheaper.
My understanding is S20 FE 5G is based on the Snapdragon processor. Some have claimed Snapdragon is impossible to unlock the bootloader, but I assume they mean you can't do it if Samsung doesn't allow it. Unfortunately, I simply can't find a Samsung site where they would give out bootloader unlock code for approved models.
No you can't not unlocked the boot loader I went with unlocked version bc of bloat software on carrier phones you will never get to unlock the bootloader
