Note 3 Pffft... Why? I have a Mega 6.3... and it works just fine - Samsung Galaxy Gear

I got my Galaxy Gear (orange) today!
This post contains links to threads that I did not post. Give props to these guys as I have simply compiled everything that I have used so far to get my gear operational.
I have been looking forward to the note 3 for a long while. However, I was in the At&t stealership getting a sim card replaced and spotted the Galaxy Mega 6.3. This phone made my old note look like an iphone. So my impulsive manhood bought that monster screen attached to what actually is quite a snappy and decent phone. (after bloatware is removed)
Soon came the rub... the Mega is Samsung's red headed step child. There is little to absolutely NO support for this thing. You can't even download the firmware, much less root the At&t version. :crying:
Side loading apk's is the life saver for this device. Side Loading saved my Mega.
I am happy to report that the Gear is alive and syncing well with my device. I have been receiving notifications. S-VOICE WORKS. I've used the watch styler, However i am not able to see any new applications in the samsung market. Side load that stuff.
I personally pulled the gear manager apk off of an S4 that I have access to, but here is a link to the thread with the latest version.

10/16 update
Six days in so far.
Working:
Notifications
Camera sync
Apps when installed from here
Watch styler (cool, if a little bit buggy, app which has already been pulled from the samsung app store)

Samsung app store now displays gear apps (apk pulled from note 3)
Music player controls currently running audio app
Pocket is awesome
S-voice
Calling
Texting replies through s-voice
EVERYTHING!...
...except:
Weather
S health requires install as a system app... so the pedometer can't sync to s health (the I527 still has not achieved root if any devs have a heart for big beautiful screened phablets?)
Installing apps through the samsung app store... although I can see them and download them I cant install them yet... mwuahaha... yet
Everything else works great so far.
I've rooted the watch.
Also silenced the camera but left the focus sound. I wanted to get rid of the stork sneeze sound from the shutter not be creepy.
I've side loaded and deleted temple run and candy crush just to say I did it. The results were impressive... I decided to keep gameboid on there... Pokemon fire red on my wrist you say? Uh... does it sound like I have a choice in the matter?
So I suspect, that even though the galaxy Mega is only running 4.2.2, it was released in between the S4 and the Note 3 and perhaps already has the needed libraries for notification?
Weather doesnt work... but again... the n3 weather widget requires root
apps wont install... but I am sure this is because I am using a note 3 apk
I took a leap of faith and I'm happy with my galaxy gear. I can't wait for full potential for this little gadget is realized.

How about reading texts on the watch and the weather?

Sorry I should clarify.
I posted within an hour of purchasing the gear.
Text notifications display full text.
Weather does not read location from.the phone. Possibly because I am running stock andy touchwiz 4.2.2 instead of 4.3 with full Bluetooth 4.0LE and the full expanded notification api in place.
All of the stock gear notification abilities seem to be working correctly.
I am curious to see what will work as new applications and updates roll in.
I haven't tested the samsung e-mail notifications, as I use the gmail app. I'm really thinking about switching just for the watch.
A very important note, one which I knew would be a possibility when I bought it... I CAN NOT SEE ANY GALAXY GEAR APPS IN THE SAMSUNG APP STORE
Perhaps I may find a way around that soon
Until then... this is still a bamf little watch no matter what anybody says

OP updated 10-16

I actually switched to a note II running 4.4 KitKat in search of tethering... I have found little use for the gear manager after tethering... Tablet talk... And a few other tweaks I've made for personal use.

That's funny I came from the Note 2. So are you saying tethering doesn't work on the Mega?

Cause it has better hardware.
Sent from my SM-N900V using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Actually not sure about whether the mega has achieved tethering yet... The issue would lie with carrier provisioning.
I left the mega community about a week after root was accomplished.
I was caught between buying a note 2, note 3, or an HTC one.
My brother and I actually set up his HTC One quite perfectly. Null_12 is great... Tasker is a great solution and I intend to upload a bunch of profiles built specifically for our purposes in the next week.
Watch the Galaxy Gear forum for updates.
And grab 4.4 KitKat asap... It is amazazazing!

Are you happy with Samsung Galaxy S i9000 ? (YES/NO) and Why?

I think i need your result about SGS
please vote and post to hold topic up.
I will be able to answer this question once Samsung/Broadcom release their "updated" GPS driver.
Yes but no! )
I love my galaxy s but don't feel I can answer yes just yet... when samsung hold to thier promise and deliver software for a fast phone with stable GPS then I will give it a resounding yes... until then, I love it... but not enough to commit myself! )
I am very happy with my device!
if you choose NO, please tell us WHY ?
Yes and after flashing to JM1 rev.3 - extremely so! Can't wait for Froyo!
Of all the smartphones I have owned so far, I love this the most. So definitely YES!
YEY
It is a great phone. Except the GPS everything just works. So when GPS is fixed, I think I will stay with this phone a long time being happy. That means > 1/2y
Shouldn't this be in the General section?
I am not quite happy with this phone. I switched from Samsung Omnia HD, the most powerfull symbian device to date, to check out the wonders of Android. Except for the multitouch, unfortunately it doesnt have anything better than Omnia HD. I am sorry to state this, because I really thought it would make a difference. But having to download an application for every single little function that should be alreayd there, it's really frustrating. It's just my point of view. Maybe some other ex HD owners think otherwise. There is not at least a led for the camera (otherwise good pictures during the day, I admit); there is no option (unless u use an app) NOT to show the whole world around you your SMSs; there is no option to choose what connection to use (unless to start and stop all kinds of data applications); you cannot choose any song you please for any alert in the phone, unless you move the respective sound in some strange folder in the phone; there is no way to choose where to install an application; gprs connection only works after I restart the phone and after a couple of hours it just doesnt transfer anything anymore; you cannot send via bluetooth unless you install an application; you cannot choose if you want or not the messages to be shown as conversations and many many more.
Dont get me wrong , the phone is very good and has many good things, but unfortunately, as I was saying, it is very very dissappointing not to have elementary comfort functions already in the menu, but to have to download little stupid apps for everything.
Conclusion: I will buy Nokia N8 as soon as it reaches my country.
PS: I dont what the famos GPS problem is, but mine with NDRIVE works great and in real time. Strange, I know.

so, you choose 'NO' becuse of Android OS.
Yes I am happy with it, it is a great multimedia device with the ability to watch films etc. on a big super amoled screen.
But I am annoyed that you have to do loads of tweaks to get everything working and lag free.
Quite alot of people would never think of flashing firmware and performing lag fixes. They would probably have been better off with the Desire which works out of the box.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Haven't voted yet. If they get GPS working I'll keep it else it's being returned as "not fit for purpose."
Overall, I am very happy with my SGS, It came with JF1 but is now running JM1, which reduced the lag a little, but thanks to RyanZa's Lag fix, the phone is too fast
Not had any need to try out the GPS and am not too fussed as its a bit of a gimick to me.
The wife has an SGS too, still on stock JF1, and she loves it, won't let me speed it up though as she is very happy with its Stock performance, having come from a Nokia N97 that crashed on a regular basis and ran like a two legged dog with no sense of direction...

Yes, unfortunately Android OS is not quite ready to be used , at least for someone coming from Symbian OS. It reminds me of older Win Mobile, few good years ago.

And would you mind explaining in just a few words what this LAG is, that everyone is talking about? I find the speed of my device just fine.
I am currently, but I am assuming GPS will become somewhat functional in September. I bought it to improve my productivity in many ways, and it does.
But, if the GPS isn't fixed, even though I rarely use it, I'd have to question if it is the best choice for me...
I am happy with the device but not the samsung service or their ability to fix problems quickly.
Over 2 months now and the gps problem and the lag problem have not been fixed. And then I look at Motorola and HTC and how quickly they come out with fixes and updates.
Plus looking at the development going on with their devices like cyanogen mod etc I am not sure if my next upgrade will be a samsung device. I might have gotten seduced by the Samoled screen but my next phone will be the one google chooses next as its development device as all these other phone might have new bells and whistles but they should add to basc android not subtract from it as many do currently.
This is truely the first phone that works great if not perfectly right out of the box!

Detailed Comparison of Tizen vs. Android on the GG1

Mods: I'm hoping you'll let this thread stay. The one dedicated Tizen thread is a combination of how to install/uninstall, personal views of the change, and discussion of actual changes and features. It's really hard to follow and at the speed Samsung's pushing out Tizen (all the EU's already done) it's going to be a large share of this forum's discussion that'll be difficult to contain to one thread.

You're both right. It depends on what your view of the GG1's purpose is and what you bought it for.
If you bought it as a garage hobby to tinker with, sideload apps for larger displays, and to run it stand-alone and type and watch movies on a tiny display just because you can Samsung's abandonment of Android for the Gear family is a bummer. I've admired the things people like this have done but other than the sport of it I don't (personally) get it.
For people that bought a Gear (or any wearable) for the productivity benefits Samsung moving the GG1 to Tizen is great. Look at it this way, with the move away from Android with the GG2's the GG1 was an orphan. No one was developing apps for it even before the move and Samsung would have stopped providing updates for it also. So it would have suffered death by neglect. Samsung's sold (or shipped) an estimated 1M GG1's so add that user base to the ongoing Samsung/Tizen mix and you have the largest wearable audience out there and at least a chance of gaining some developer interest.
My thoughts after using Tizen for a few days...
The "ugly"
The lack of apps available is a big deal. Some people with GG2's have said they have more apps available in Samsung Apps than we do for the GG1 so hopefully what's missing is just Samsung having issues getting the GG1 configured in their App store. Some of the apps I used heavily and liked are gone: TripIt, Glympse, CNN, Vivino, and Peel Remote for example. I doubt some will be back so I'm kind of bummed.
The "bad"
I miss the ability to swipe down to access the Camera and swipe up to access settings (my upward swipeable app of choice). It's kind of strange that something so simple couldn't have been replicated in Tizen. The solution is to use the App clock which gets you access just as quickly. I'd rather have the weather showing but c'est la vie.
The "good"
So far, there's not a single stock app or feature I've found that's not better in Tizen than Android. Some examples.
Gear Manager
It's cleaner, faster, and better organized. The Home screen styler provides nice customizations without having to install battery-draining third party apps to stylize the watch face. The amount of discussion in this forum dedicated to watch faces kind of boggles my mind. So for the watch face obsessed the new customizations should be welcome. Before, if your phone lost its connection to the Gear, Gear Manager closed. Now, it stays open and displays a warning in the notification panel that the connection's been lost. There are settings now that allow you to receive notifications on your Gear while the phone's display is on and to receive notifications on your Gear without illuminating the display. Pretty nifty.
Connectivity
Way better. I can be about 15' further from my phone before my Gear loses its connection compared to Android. The phone/Gear also maintain their connection better and re-connect faster when it's lost. I like the audible notification when the connection is gained and lost too. Smart relay and Auto lock are a lot faster and more reliable too. Weather updates reliably for me every hour which was pretty random before. When a third BT device was thrown in the mix the Gear and my phone would fight for the connection. For example when I was in my car using BT audio. Everyone plays nice now.
UI
I -hate- the default Tizen interface display which is small icons flanking the clock. I liked the former jumbo icons because when running through an airport or walking on a street they are a lot easier to hit when moving. The new UI is highly customizable and there are now two home screen display options. The large clock/small icons default and the former jumbo icons. I was bummed when I first saw that "favorites" and "re-ordering" apps was gone from Gear Manager. It isn't gone it's now on the Gear itself and on steroids. Long pressing an app in the Apps panel allows it to be moved to the home screen. You can even re-order apps within the app panel by dragging and dropping them. The home screen works the same way. The clock is the default home page. You can re-order apps around it by dragging and dropping them. Long-pressing something on the home screen allows it to be deleted. Other than the loss of drag up/down app access from the clock screen I can't see how anyone can say the new Tizen UI approach isn't more customizable, flexible, and better overall.
Here's a quick vid of the Gear set up with jumbo icons as before...
Notifications
Hallelujah. What a mess the Android notification apps/management process was. Call logs getting stuck with no way to remove them, CNN staying in notifications permanently after the first notification was received, e-mail being treated separately, just to name a few. Every notification is now treated as a peer. While on the Notifications main screen you can now drag down and "delete all" appears so all your notifications can be deleted at once. The same exists for all individual notification categories too.
Mail
Gear Manager now lets you specify what e-mail accounts you want displayed on your Gear. In addition, you can now keep scrolling and read 100% of a received e-mail. If you're in the dedicated e-mail app you can now swipe left or right to delete a single e-mail. Maybe the old Android e-mail app did that too, I never tried it.
Messaging
There's now a dedicated messaging app. Messages now display with accompanying received pictures too. If you're in the app and swipe down a "send message" option's available that allows you to scroll your contacts with mobile numbers and originate a message from a template or using S voice. Speaking of which you now set either as a default across the device to manage how you reply. You can also now send an emoticon (only) as a message or reply.
Contacts
Way faster scrolling. Swipe right to call and left to message works the same but the latter now actually works. In Android it would stumble over +1 or "(XXX)" around an area code. Contacts with pictures now have their pictures show up reliably wherever the Gear's able to display them.
S voice/Speaker/Mic
Wow, what a difference. S voice is twice as fast and the speaker/mic both louder/clearer. I've tested calls with some friends and they said I sounded fine where before I faded in and out and sounded like I was underwater.
Camera
Way faster and now includes geo-tagging. Voice now actually works consistently (EG: "shoot") which is a lot easier than trying to hit the display and allows you to look at your subject and not just your wrist when setting up a picture. The video limit is 15 seconds. Transfer speeds to the host device are now a lot faster too.
Music Player
Kind of cool. I used it with BT ear buds when mowing the lawn and it was surprisingly strong. Kind of a neat feature to have when you don't want to schlep your phone around to listen to music. I have a N3 so not schlepping it around is a bigger benefit than to someone with a S4 mini.
Fitness with Gear app/Health
I never used S Health on my phone but with the changes made to the Gear's health reporting and syncing apps I'll probably start. I've only browsed the apps/functions available but what they track seems interesting to capture and monitor to improve your health-related habits or routines.
So, for those that use their Gear for the out-of-the-box features the upside's pretty strong to move to Tizen. The biggest downside is the limited number of apps and the potential loss of those you may have used previously. The swipe up/down loss is a bummer but by using the Apps clock certainly livable. For those that bought the Gear as a "franken-watch" to play with you're obviously better off skipping Tizen.
If I've gotten anything wrong or if someone wants to add something to the list to keep it current just let me know.
Thanks for your detailed information! This Tizen thingy is Iching me so much right now, but as there is no way back(for now), there won't be any chance for me at this moment. As I play instruments I use my gear alot to tune instruments(it works pretty well!). And there is no way this will be available on Tizen(so far).
Thanks OP for the breakdown. I was one of those that bought this thing as a "garage product" when they were blowing them out for $100. I loved tinkering with it so much (installing Null rom) that I eventually bit the bullet and upgraded my aging Note 1 for an officially supported Note 2 hoping to reap better battery life from the upspec to BT 4.0 and better Gear Manager pairing.
Sadly, this has not been the case...So I am now pondering the benefits of Tizen and it's purported battery life enhancement. Can you comment further on this?
Can your setup make "hands free" calls? Currently I have the Google Now Launcher on my Gear and I can place calls by simply saying "OK Google, Call my Wife". Can something similiar be done with S Voice?
Hi Barry_GEG ,
To start , i to like to state , that i was one of " those" forum members ,not really interested in upgrading (?)
That said i was curious and open to suggestions and advice.!!
Read your detailed comparison and thought about it for a while and then came to conclusion you got some good points covered.!!
Well i flashed Tizen , and yes first impressions ( always count !!! )
Gear 1 is much smoother now (really trust me on this and Barry_GEG ) ,but the deal breaker for me is the music player !!
( i thought i could play music on my Gear 1, but via no headset, no go.! )
but this music player is a basic stand alone player.!!
I tested it with my Plantronic headset ,very impressed .!
I transferred my music to Gear via pc (switched my Note 3 bluetooth off )
I was connected directly with bluetooth headset to Gear and it plays 100% without handset ( Note 3 ).
This to me is already worthwhile.and a big bonus .
Forget about sentiments about this o/s and that o/s.
.( i am not a Tizen fan, as long as i can use my Gear better, it has to do )
Yes ,i lose some apps etc..and not much apps true, but found a good watchface in store .
(Not interested further, at moment about extra apps )
yes, to me already the stand alone music player
( Gear 1 on wrist and headset @ bluetooth connected ) is a worth while bonus .( for me )
Good luck ,
Thanks
Post note ..battery ,well we will just have to see ,but it looks ok ?
Battery life! It has been great. I just flashed it last night and it drained 1% in 12 hours.
The music player is a welcome add on, I like to run without distraction from phone.
Man, is there no way to send a msg template using another sms app? I hate the stock messaging app..

Using the music player, does anyone know or have tried to listen to an audio book from overdrive or audible? I still use a little ipod to work around the house/garden and would love to use just one device.
This is pretty cool. You can move content off and on the Gear via USB rather than, for example, having to transfer music to the Gear via Gear Manager which has an 11 song at a time limit and is painfully slow.

You can also load off-line pictures and videos for display/playback via the Gallery app. Here's a sample MP4 I transferred to the Gear via USB. Notice how decent the audio sounds. It was never that clear on Android, at least for me.
So basically we can use the Gear now to playback photo, video, and audio files. We just have to figure out what file formats it supports.
ive updated my gear to tizen and I love it, watch styler works very well and the interface is clean
only 1 problem I think
I goto gear manager ,then Samsung apps,
completely nothing there, no apps at all

I listened to an hour and a half podcast in MP3 format, so I would think if you have Audible in that one, that you would be able to listen to it too.

Hello,
I'm new here and be interested to now if there is anny chance that after flash tizen the watch is able to work whit Nexus 5 ? (notification and calls)
Thx Alex
Notifications working really well for me on Tizen paired with an Xperia Z Ultra. You get to pick which apps are allowed to notify through gear manager and then they sync up well. Attached is a pic (sorry for quality) of Tapatalk xda notifications I just got a minutes ago.

Update: media control also works very well with non samsung device - full control of poweramp was very unexpected.
Calls tested and working too. Photos sync back to phone and everything else is working as expected. For a non Samsung paired device the Tizen update is a good one (in my opinion).

You don't have installed gearmanager on phone ?
Alex
Yes, have gear manager installed (plus about 10 other gear apps) - you will need to install gear manager and associated apps for anything to work - there's a gear manager thread to guide you through it

After the restore to fix the battery its getting better but I would still go back to Android if there was a way. Yesterday a few of us found out you can flash the Android firmware but you had no touch so you couldn't do anything.
As it just got rooted hopefully it will get better faster.

I had this exact issue and finally got it resolved today.
After clearing data on the Gear Manager app, logging out/in, etc. what eventually fixed it for me was uninstalling and re-installing Gear Manager.
Good luck!

After clearing data on the Gear Manager app, logging out/in, etc. what eventually fixed it for me was uninstalling and re-installing Gear Manager.
Good luck!

S20FE (Snapdragon) (SM-G781B): Force remove GameOptimizationService howto -

For anyone that has been struggling to remove this damn app (com.samsung.android.game.gos), I found the solution (atleast for me on my S20FE (G781B). It goes without saying you WILL need root enabled on your device for this method!
Fair warning you do this at your own risk
Go to the Googleplay and install 'File Explorer (by jrummy) ', or download it from apkmirror. Then open up the app and go to root then system then priv-app - /system/priv-app
There will be a folder in there called 'GameOptimizationService', select the folder and then select delete.
Then via adb, check and remove the app again, you should get a 'failure' message meaning its already been removed so you will never see a toast popup error agaib (happy days) -
pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.samsung.android.games.gos - see below for revissed instructions
Now as I find the theme app & service pointless I have gone and remove that also, but I will need to monitor is long term to see what side effect (if any) that will have. The upside is it removes is from the list in the settings app.
[update] Courtesy of @justin22 we now know you don't have to remove the app just use an alternative method to hide - 'pm hide com.samsung.android.games.gos' This will have the same effect, as in stop the app from running in the background which then stops the annoying popups.
Moved this to its own post to make it easier for people to find -

Ah Sweet, thanks for that. Have been looking for that for a while, didn't occur to me to click on that button, doh!
This worked well on Tab S7.. Thanks
Great that you found a solution, too bad it has to be on a rooted phone.
The only reason i won't root my phone is beacuse of using samsung pay and some banking apps
I still hope samsung will eventually come to its senses and either fix this GoS crap or allow us to completely remove it
It's driving me nuts that i cant play games without lag on my phone (Galaxy s9+)
Hi @b1k3rdude
I am using a galaxy Tab S4 with android 10. Not rooted. Root privileges caused me more hassle than benefits so I flashed the stock image again. I also went thru the painful and deep debloating process. I would love to send you my debloat list, if you'd like to review it.
If I remember correctly I left the 3 gos apps. Dunno why. Are you telling me that if I remove them, my GPU won't throttle anymore?
The only way I could make the GPU stop throtthling was with mtweaks. I set the clock speeds to max. But the temps went crazy. But hey, I got no major framedrops from 60 to 40-30 like I was having before.
I have recently bought a Tab S7 hoping that the frame drop thing was gone. I was wrong. Same game (Rules Of Survival), same maxed out settings (max quality, max resolution, max FPS, no shadows, no MSAA), same debloat (on the S7 I deleted the GOS stuff too but not the system folder you mentioned) and I was still experiencing frame drops. Not as bad as before but they were still there. And you know what?! Lowering the settings did not improve AT ALL the performance. I have already returned the S7 because it had some weird touchscreen problems.
I think I might stick with the S4 until some Chinese company won't come out with a nice and powerful android tablet. Lenovo has got the P11 PRO but it's less powerful that the S7 and it costs more LOL. But without all that Sammy crap it might perform better.
My OnePlus Nord can handle Rules Of Survival ways better than my Tab S4 and similarly to what the Tab S7 was doing.
Edit: back in the days when I rooted the S4 I was talking to a friend of mine who addressed me to that damn thing called DVFS that downclocks the GPU when it's under load causing those massive framedrops.
I remember that DVFS nonsense. games would perform wonderfully for about 10 seconds then turn to crap. it was a cheat for better benchmark scores if I recall the theories of the day.
tell me Samsung doesn't still use that ?

I don't play games on my phones, so I cant help you there I am afraid (I have a high end desktop PC for gaming).
I just didn't want the service running in the background, constantly complaining via toast notifications that some Samsung apps/services it wanted weren't running.

Ah cool, thanks for that, I will add this to the OP.
This no makes me wonder how many other apps you could do this on, for example could we get away with this on com.samsung.android.kgclient for example without causing a softlock..?
I would test this, but cant untill twrp for this device get updated with external sdcard support. [update] - you can backup/restore to an external USB drive (I went and bought a USV-C to NVME enclosure and a 256GB SSD for this.
nah,I wouldnt touch that one (kgclient) ... another app I tried to hide was com.ims(service).something... but the system got sluggish, and I was glad that I could enable it again.
pm hide is like it was uninstalled, but the package remains...so be CAREFULL !!!!!!!!
I use automagic for my trial and errors.
I build a flow which consists of <disable/hide package> - <timer : 60sec> - <enable/unhide package>
its kind of a failsafe.if nothing happens.. GREAT and I stop the flow,if the system gets buggy but not rebooted, then after 60secs the package is active again.
also I add the <enable/unhide package> action to the autostart flow.. hoping that this would get executed even if the lockscreen is locked (not sure though about this one).
Later I add a label in titaniumbackup to the frozen apps,so I hope that I can restore (refreeze) frozen apps if I should EVER have to do a factory reset again.
Without TWRP my desire to freeze anymore packages is kinda low,as I always have to accept to do a factory reset if I disable the wrong package
Btw.. when there will be a TWRP (T870).. you dont have to do a factory reset when flashing the twrp package right ??

Same, I know @afaneh92, is working on getting ext. SD card support atm.
If its an updated version of twrp, you just flash from ODIN. You DO NOT have to touch the phone (eg doing factory reset and such).
thanks for the info !
I looked for a TWRP for SM-T870,but I didnt find anything (only S7+).
So there is a TWRP for T870,just without xSDsupport right now ?
If so where can I find it/OR is there a post where I can check for progress/or info (when its ) available ?
@justin22 I just had a check myself, there's no development of TWRP posted here for you.
from android 10 released devices onwards TWRP development is much harder. google has changed the way partitions are organised from what I've read. root is more involved now too. development on lots of Samsung devices has slowed right down. we need devs to own these devices I think to be motivated. we're looking at months of waiting especially with bootloader unlock in the US not being free for now.
@3mel : again thanks for the info !
When I got my S7,I couldnt shake the feeling that this will be my last Samsung device.Alone the ****ty warning screens every time I reboot, all the crap installed, and pointless apps/processes you cant get rid of without bricking the whole thing (kgclient(payment),...).
And now no TWRP...

Same, each time SS keep making it harder for use to root and flash custom recovery and roms to our devices.
You can flash boot animations to remove this.
We have TWRP, just no Ext SD card support atm. And without an S20FE the dev cant work on this :-(
do you have a tutorial /thread/link for boot ani flash &/or T870 TWRP (even without SDcard support) ? (I couldnt find ANY twrp for the T87xx(S7) series, only the T97xx (S7+)

I had a look and there was nothing on this site, other than the TWRP site there's no other place I'd trust if they said they had it. best thing might be to ask in the other tab 7 TWRP threads if they'd be compatible with SM-T870 or if they could made so.
if that's the newest sexy tab with the S-pen you've got, it should have a few users who feel the same way. also check whether it has a locked bootloader, that'll be a big factor if half the world's devs can't flash test builds.
TWRP development sounds like a real pig of an affair nowadays
TWRP and Android 10
Please note that this post is primary related to TWRP and the Pixel 3 and 4 and devices that may ship in the future that ship with Android 10 as their origin...

Just tried this but got a security exception thrown. A quick search explained that Google actually removed hide a while ago?
If anyone has an alternative that would be great. Disable doesn't work for game services as it restarts straight away.

Question Creating a more "pixel like" experience on the S21? worth it?

So I'm coming from a nexus/pixel experience to this huge beast of a s21 ultra.
I'm stuck with vzw as that's the only provider in my area with any sort of real signal. So My bootloader is definitely locked.
What can I do to make this more pixel like? I guess I am stuck in my ways of the og android experience. That and the fact that Samsung has ads all over the place REALLY bugs me to the core.
I disabled all the lovely verizon crap
swapped out samsung pay for google pay (since it doesn't use the mft.. I would rather use google pay as I have been for years)
Disabled bixby for google assistant.
Pulled the weather widget with its wonderful ads for carrot.
replaced the calendar with google calendar.
Replaced phone dialer with Googler dialer (yay! no more spam calls!) - Though I can't turn on the business piece there where some businesses must state why they are calling..
replaced notes with Keep.
contacts with google contacts
messages with google messages
browser with chrome
keyboard for gboard. (hated the layout of the space bar)
file browser for Files by google.
Haven't decided if I like the One Ui 3.1 or If I should go back to nova.. Does nova now support work separation?
Anything Else I'm missing/feel like I should be replacing?
Edit: Yes I know I should have stuck with pixel at this point.. but I needed a new phone and got an amazing deal.. so figured why not.

For spam calls, yes.
Call screen option doesn't work for me.
I too use the google apps, don't feel like you should have kept the pixel. The point of those google apps is that you can install them on other devices.
Sorry, mistook the spam blocking for call screening. I had completely forgotten about the actual call screening.
I do not have the call screening option. (had to go look at the pixel and realized that.)

I was thinking more from a "well, you wanted bare bones.. this phone isn't bare bones." I'm absolutely in love with the camera on this phone, and that's pretty much what sealed it for me today after taking some shots at work.
There's definitely a lot of quirks that Im trying to figure out how to remove. (like: I would love it if it would automatically remove location data from pics I share.. not ask me every time. I want the location info in the original pics I backup, just not shared.)

On the pixels the google assistant would pickup the phone for you, and screen the call. You could then see that the caller was saying and pick up if you wanted to. Was really, really cool.
Day 1 with the s21 ultra I received 4 spam robocalls. (I'm on a list or something. I used to get 5-7 a day) it was not blocking them unless I blocked the calls manually.
Ive made all the same changes as you. Im also coming from a Pixel. Any luck getting Visual Voicemail to work?

where did you grab the Pixel Dialer app from?
I am in the same boat! I came from owning Pixel phones and haven't touched a Galaxy since GEN1. I love all the Google apps, but wanted to get the better hardware from Samsung, since Google has disappointed me with the Pixel 4 and 5. Switched to a Galaxy S21U from a Pixel 3 XL
The Samsung launcher should blow Nova away.
Google is no fresh ray of sunshine either; some of the Samsung apps are useful, you need to pick the ones that work for you as there's a lot.
Then disregard the rest.
Phone, Contacts and Messages work well.
Use the Good Lock family of apps to customize your home screen and more.
Use the Galaxy Store for custom themes (the native high contrast theme is one of the best) and icon packs literally hundreds of free ones.
Use One Handed Operation Plus for all kinds of side screen switch mods.
Samsung's are the most customizable phones out there and most of those mods are found on the Glaxy Store. If you play with it a bit you'll most likely find a set up you like. Go after the theme and icon pack you want first so it looks right.
Then set the wallpaper you want.
It's not a one trick Apple or Pixel... and setting up it up takes some time because there are so many options; there's a learning curve.
Relax and explore it.

I'm working on getting the Pixel Safety app working on the Galaxy S21 Ultra. Installs and setups fine, but gives off an error of a location issue with Google Maps. Tried the beta version of Maps and the regular, still can't get rid of that error. Would prefer to use this app over the Galaxy's SOS option.

I keep locations turned off almost always.
I have zero confidence in Google when it comes to privacy... they earned that.
Need to know basis and there's a lot they don't need to know.
Invariably Google will drop the ball with all their services as their history graphically shows.
Google can't help it; it's their nature.
I limit my investment as much as possible with their services.
We are their products... not a good relationship.
Ditching their phone was a good first step

[APP][PATCHED] Google Phone v53+BLACK THEME [NO ROOT]
Google phone ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Latest Google Phone app Beta (v.53) can now be installed from the Play Store on any phone...
forum.xda-developers.com
Here is the link, Grab the ARM64 version
Recommended:
- Install the XDA provided patched Google Phone apk
- go into app info and grant it all the perms it needs (by default everything will be revoked - at least it was for me).
- Go to Default Apps on your phone and make sure to set the google dialer to be default app for phone, and spam call filtering
- Open the app, make sure it all looks good and then have a friend leave you a voicemail, tada! You'll get a notification for the voicemail (but its from samsung and leads nowhere), and you can go into your Google Dialer and check out the voicemail. afaik transcription, playback, deletion, etc all work fine.
I will say, often when I open the app it says I have 9+ missed calls idk why it says that, but i just straight ignore it
I wouldn't change the Dialer.
And, Samsung Notes is decent.

Has anyone hacked the new AA APK to support phone mode?

Now that I stupidly upgraded to Android 12 on my Pixel, I can no longer use AA on my phone. For those who don't know, Google replaced AA's phone mode with Maps' "driving mode", which is a portrait-only mess of mostly-useless widgets. My car is never going to be able to have real Android Auto, so I'm stuck with phone mode, which has worked great for years.
Anyone know what would be involved in getting an older APK for run on Android 12? Or hacking the current version to show the phone mode UI again?
I have a similar problem. I've also upgraded to android 12 so I can't use Android auto anymore. After updating it did launch at first but I guess it auto updated to a version that disabled it on Android 12. So it seems that android 12 can run it just fine.
I'm perfectly willing to try out the new driving mode but I'm living in the Netherland which is not a supported county at the moment.
So google basically removed a feature I used every day without providing me with an alternative.
So I'm hoping there will be modified asks that will skip the android 12 check or some way to enable driving mode In unsupported countries. I don't mind driving in portret mode (I'll take anything at the moment), but would prefer landscape.
I found an interesting workaround in running the Headunit Reloaded app in Self Mode.
Seems to work fine on Android 12 .
It provides the same interface that build in Android Auto car units would have, so it differs a bit from the mounted phone version.
Search the forum for more information.
It's a paid app though.
I think many have this issue with AA car mode. I'm in the UK and have this issue also my poco F1 won't allow AA to backdate an install without root.
All I want is for the 0hone AA to show calendar entries and weather would be awesome. I loved the original AA but it's very dull on current phones.
Can anyone help or assist with a custom apk or know of one, that can be installed normally and work as it used too. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks
can you uninstall AA and reinstall with older version?
They have cardashdroid. I'm still on eleven and this morning after the last aa update I seen it looked like aa aiontweaker was not working anymore or at least I didn't have split screen. I'm on OnePlus 9 pro and haven't updated because I didn't want to lose some features.

Hi thanks for the question, no an unrooted Poco F1 won't let you uninstall or back date to an older app.
I've tried the AA for screens but it doesn't do calender entries, so I have to input all the time where I'm going and weather isn't there, although not critical, I did love this feature.
It's just a blank screen and even texts aren't read now, so it's killed the app for driving. Older cars in the UK don't have onboard screens and I'd rather use the phone for traffic updates than an bad sat nav.
Itnwasnonce a great app but not anymore.
So any chance of customising the app for these basic functions would be great.
Atb
Also, I don't think an older APK will help. It seems to be a server side switch. My Android Auto continued working right after upgrading to 12, but after a couple of hours, it quit working and redirects to the "no longer supported" screen. I think we'd need to spoof the Android version somehow, which is something I can't begin to guess at how to do.
That's a shame I was hoping that at least the calendar could be integrated, I noticed that in permissions calandar is disabled, other permissions are allowed. So I was assuming that if the permission could be enabled that calendar entries could appear if encoded to display etc. I didn't think it was all server based as why would they remove the permission?
Just a thought anyway.
Atb
Guys, what about running AA on Android 10? I was using aa for phone screens on my huawei p30 and it just stopped working without any update
Yep ggogle have basically stopped any alterations or updates on my phone's to AA. So it's a dead duck it water I can't even use Waze as an alternative!
If a modded AA could be created, with local weather and calender shown that would be great, and the option of Waze again.

How are you running 'Self Mode' on an Android 12 phone? Mine doesn't seem to work when I try to start it

Maybe you still need to "Start head unit server" in the Android Auto app?
I only found out about it after taking the time to read the instructions
You first need to enter developer mode:

After that you have a new menu option:
Follow. I really miss old AA for phone screens. New driving mode assistant is ****
What a despicable move by Google.
I upgraded S21 ultra from Android 11 to Android 12, worst mistake ever.
Apart from losing Android Auto for phone screens, I dont even have option for driving mode assistent.
What absolute bull****, taking a working product away, and making driving more unsafe.
No 3rd party solution comes near.
Would be so gratefull if someone found a workaround/hack to get AA for phone screens working again.

So if goovle are crippling AA for phone users, are there any working good alternatives out there as I haven't found a simple talk to sat Nav linked to waze or Google maps, with text and voice answering hands free.
Most of the apps are crippled by Google so there's nothing out there that seems to give a decent stab at a navigation solution with calls and text response facility.
Any advice on this would be appreciated

There is no good alternative. There are a couple of apps like Automate or whatever it is called now, but they are truly terrible compared to AA. Google have been updating "driving mode" over the last six months, but true to form they have only made it worse. This week it removed the one icon I had to use to launch the music player and replaced it with SIX icons to random podcasts I have never heard of, about subjects I have no interest in.
Every single day when I get in my car, I hate Google more.
