Galaxy Gear connect TEST, HTC ONE/GG/custom ROMs - Samsung Galaxy Gear

After reading xda member "Clifford's" find that his ONE connected to his GEAR with almost full functionality (thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2468522) I had to do some investigations. S-voice, according to him, was the only feature that failed to function, even after installing s-voice. For you knowledge, his phone is running OMJ's 4.1.2 ROM, its not stock.
Test phone: AT&T HTC ONE (unlocked)
The following are the Roms I have tried and their outcome was exactly the same:
Gear manager.apk: first part of install completes. however, none of the 19 additional files install... not does the installer stop trying to complete
Galaxy Gear: Connects to phone for code verification, once code is confirmed, phone/device disconnect. the error is device exception.
ROMs
CM 10.1.3
Android Rev 22.0
Android Rev GE 4.0
CleanRom 5.0
CleanRom 6.0
Maximus HD 14.0
Maximus7 2.0.0
TrickDroid 8.0.0
ViperOne 2.1.0
So, needless to say, I was not only skeptical about the previous xda member's findings...I was frustrated.
So I got on the horn with some of my Dev friends and we found:
RayGlobe 8.0
HOLY S*#T! Gear installed along with the additional files. Now for the real test............(drum roll please)
Samsung Galaxy Gear paired with an HTC ONE!!!!!
Functionality:
All call functions work. Send, receive, deny, speaker/mic, end call, etc
Notifications work, but are slow
Can change watch faces
Find my gear/phone works
Not functioning (so far, will play more tomorrow):
Weather
S-voice
Media player
Gear manager is 50% functional. S-apps begins to load, but fails. Pressing on the settings button crashes GM (does restart/reconnect)
So, "I think", Sammy is intentionally keeping this device in the S-ecosystem. Why, you ask? ...............good question.........Sammy?
I am hoping with the above information, devs can work on how we can make this at least 80%-90% functional...?

Thanks for the information

I take it this is the same for nexus 4 device, not compatible with gear manager

The Gear acts as a BT headset and in most cases is just relaying info from the host apps of the (Samsung) phone it's paired with. You'll never get the Gear to work (properly) with a HTC phone for the same reason TW won't run (properly) on a HTC phone. Or Sense on a Samsung phone for that matter. HTC and Samsung's proprietary frameworks run too deep. And the Gear won't work on Samsung phones running AOSP for the same reason. S Voice on the Gear is so tightly interwoven with S Voice on the phone you can't clear data or disable it on the latter once the phone is paired with a Gear. And S Voice requires a network connection to work and the server does a device ID check so even if someone ports S Voice to an HTC phone the server will deny it access.

Thanks for the thanks!
Most of the above roms are 4.3. However, this seems to make no difference as I have now confirmed functionality on 4.1.2, 4.2.2 and 4.3.
The most stable rom, so far, is TrickDroid 8.0. Pretty much exactly the same r result as RayGlobe. Calls can be answered /rejected, speaker /mic are working (however, two ppl have complained about quality of my voice), call log works perfect, as does the contacts app. Find my gear /phone also works without a hitch.
I have tried multiple different ways to get s-voice to work. A couple of the roms have s-voice already built in. RayGlobe was the better rom in this respect... S-voice would run it evoked from the watch, but then went to "must agree to terms..." error (I had already agreed). But if you pressed the SV key on the phone, the watch mic takes the input.
Biggest issue... Last night when I very first got the gear.apk to install on the RayGlobe rom, I received an Gmail which was notified by the watch. Since then, I have yet to receive any notification, text/email/FB/twot etc on any rom.
The "settings" section of the Gear Manger is completely unusable. Every time I try to open settings, GM goes to black screen and crashes. My apps is pretty much the same.
All in all, I really don't care about s-voice... It would be nice to link it to G-now!?!? But if I can get the notification part working, and maybe figure out how to clean up the watch's microphone output... I would be happy.

Dude! I was so close to giving up... After 14 installs, bricking my phone twice and wasting my entire day... I had enuf! Just then I got a text from a dev friend who listened to me rant and ***** about Samsung's management! (Seems to be a common discussion these days, hmmm) but, nonetheless, I felt better.
It wasnt long after that we found RayGlobe 8.0.
BTW, I don't have a Sprint phone that I can test with... Maybe u can answer these questions...
1 do you have ANY of the notification functions working?
2. Can you control your media player?
3 have to used it to make calls as a speaker phone? Do people complain of voice quality?
4. Can use Gear Manager's "settings" and/or "my apps"?
Thanx,
MM007

Any updates on this? Any progress?

This is great, although we need to try identify and isolate what exactly allows the gear to pair up on certain roms and why it doesnt on others.
If its simply a matter of the APK's the gear manager is requesting to install, We could simply install those manually iv managed to extract them from the gear manager apk if anyone is interested in trying.
We all realize that the touchwiz dependent features will require touchwiz obviously, in saying that tho theres no reason why they cant be replaced with third party applications in the future.

Does anyone know any of the devs from RayGlobe? This is the only rom I getting this error, "Need to agree to T&C". When you install the sv.apk, whether you run from phone or watch the first time, no T&C request.
I wonder if that is added back in, this ONE rom could work. This rom has shown the most functionality potential so far.
However, I am worried about the notifications. Very inconsistent. No one has yet to come up with any ideas. i have pretty much converted a ONE into an S3 with the apks installed. Weird using touch-wiz on an HTC.
I don't have access to a note 3. Here's my thought, can someone who has an N3 create a DL of the apks that gear attaches itself to. Mainly the notifications, s-voice, and weather. PLEASE.... Would really be a big help.

Skygo or 3 dot menu?

I will be receiving my new device today and I am having a bit of a dilemma. For the first time, I am considering running my device stock un-rooted as I really like to have the skygo app which will only function on an un-rooted device. The problem is, I know the 3 dot menu will really do my head in.
I am coming from the hox + were this menu can be disabled without root so, firstly, could somebody tell me how prevailent this is at present? Are there still a lot of apps with this problem?
The ideal solution for me would be to have skygo working on a rooted device but I have searched and searched and have not been able to find a solution for this. Is there one?
Also, perhaps a noob question, is it possible to root the device, remove the 3 dot menu then un-root it and still have this modification on place?
Any observations and help would be grately appreciated.
This is also the main reason I rooted. There are still a LOT of apps with the 3 dot menu and it is unbelievably annoying to see that black bar so often. I don't know why htc didn't just leave the option to long press back for menu in the stock Rom.
Sent from my HTC One using xda-developers app
Yes, the 3 dot menu is there for many apps. Yes, it is annoying. However, seeing as the screen is an decent size and I have always had the 3 dots since owning the phone, I am used to it now, it doesn't bug me all that much.
Also, I think there is a decent chance this will be fixed when htc send out an update.
Sky go just recently updated to include working on the HTC one, who knows how long it will last.... Which is why I would say to stick with Unrooted for now if you are a sky go user

Since you already have a HOX+, enable the on screen menu & check the apps you frequently use if they are updated & don't need the menu button anymore. This way you will know if it will bother you or not.
Root the stock rom on your device, disable 3 dot menu, remove the Superuser binaries, install SkyGo. Works a treat!

If someone would like to confirm this as working....
I'd be more than happy with such a solution.
Where I put "Works A Treat" it should read "Should work a treat". I haven't tested it on this device but I had a similar problem getting SkyGo to work on my Nexus 10. I had to root first, edit the build.prop to think it's a different device and then unroot. Worked perfectly.

Im keen to get SkyGo working as well so I will flash back to stock and test. Will report back in half hour or so.

Well it kind of worked. You no longer get the doesnt work on a rooted device message however you do get the Unsupported Device message. This is because SkyGo doesnt officially support the One yet. A news report I just read suggests that Sky are increasing there supported devices next week to include the One and the S4.
I would suggest waiting until SkyGo is updated next week and then try the above method.
Nope, sky go now does officially get support for htc one. I downloaded it yesterday, it mentions this phone in the most recent updates. And I tried it out for a few seconds, streamed countdown fine.
Just to confirm I am on an Unrooted htc one.

Ubuntu Touch as daily driver

I see a need for a discussion thread that deals with Ubuntu Touch (preferably on Nexus 4) as a daily driver. There are several threads discussing multi boot, restoring Android etcetera etcetera. This thread is for people who want to discuss the day-to-day usage of Ubuntu Touch as their main phone. This shoud be the perfect place to post info about new as well as know issues, strengths, shortcomings, new apps - simply things to help each other out and share tips, tricks, workarounds and more to improve the user experience.
To start out, I would like to know if anybody has a workable solution for adding a foreign keyboard layout, in my case Swedish. I have already tried the suggested steps on the Touch/ReleaseNotes page but had no luck so far with "sv" as the utf-8 code. I still have the original en_US layout.
I heard that it had terrible battery life. Of course the lack of apps (whatsapp for me) is a dealbreaker. OMGUbuntu has a nice article about why UT isnt a good daily driver.

Many of the things stated in the article you mention are correct, but I think battery life should not be the dealbreaker. The drain for me has ranged between 3% and all the way up to 8-9% per hour. It is nowhere near as good as the Nexus 4 with Android, but then again it is not yet fully optimized. For me the daliy driver experience should be mostly improved by working bluetooth, Swedish keyboard, a decent e-mail client and some kind of calendar sync with Google. I hope that Canonical focuses on fixing the basic stuff first and foremost. More apps and settings options will come eventually.
Headset issues
Bluetooth is still not working, but I am also having problems using a wired headset for phone calls. It "sort of" works, but the person at the other end complains about choppy sound. The headset is fine when I listen to music etc.
Anyone sharing this experience?
ok. and why another thread?
all things are discussed here already:

they wrote about ongoing development, new features, what's not working or not .....
with every new thread which is opened, it becomes more difficult for the users to follow

I have been following that thread for a while, but I found it was turning more into a discussion about ROM versions, different kernels, install problems, the upcoming 14.04 release and things that seem more aimed at developers. It is getting increasingly difficult to find information about using the current "stable" build v1.0 (r100), which I guess will be updated OTA in the coming weeks and months. I know UT is not aimed at the common user just yet, but I want a thread for us adventurous users that want an alternative to Android on our Nexus phones.
Photos
Is it just me, or do photos on the Nexus 4 taken with Ubuntu Touch look considerably better than its Android counterparts?
Some interesting facts about pictures taken under similar conditions outdoors:
Ubuntu Touch
Image size: 3264x1836
Resolution: 72 dpi
Bit depth: 24
Size: 1.49 MB
Android:
Image size: 3264x2448
Resolution: 72 dpi
Bit depth: 24
Size: 1.46 MB
Despite more pixels, the Android image has much more noise and when enlarging it looks really blurry, while the UT image still looks nice and sharp. I thought the Nexus 4 camera was crap, but now I actually find it pretty useful, I like!

[GUIDE] Using Samsung Gear Fit with Nexus 5

i made a video explaining how to use the Fit on the Nexus 5. this also may work with other phones im unsure.
mediafire.com/folder/05n572epblf4v/Gear_Fit_Nexus
youtu.be/Sk0vsx6k-cU
download those files
install GR.gearmanagerstub.apk
then install gear fit update 1.25.apk
open the app and pair the fit. it should connect. you can use it like this but the update ads a few features like screen rotation.
now you need to get a samsung phone that is compatible and update the fit to 1.49
now you uninstall GR.gearmanagerstub.apk and gear fit update 1.25.apk
now install gearfitmanager1.49update.apk and gearfitinstaller.apk and pair your device. everything should be working perfectly.
i am also claiming the first nexus 5 working with the gear fit
Edit: I just found a "lite" version of s-health that DOES work. Here's the link
App: http://www.mediafire.com/download/hbycvq5br1qbbly/com.sec.android.app.shealthlite-1.apk
Service: http://www.mediafire.com/?wr3t5fm5uwj8hr4
Apparently I can post links now too. Awesome

Thank you for posting this guide. I will try it out.
Do you also have an idea how to use S Health on the Nexus?

I haven't figured out how it get that working yet. It force closes right away. Nor have I figured out weather. But if you have a problem with notifications just go to settings > security > notification settings and enable it for the gear fit manager. Also still can't figure out how to change the time to 12h instead of 24h.

Scratch that last part. I figured it out right after I posted that. All I did was go to the clock settings on my phone and toggled 24h mode on and off.
Edit: I updated the OP with how to use an "lite" version of shealth.

mediafire.com/folder/05n572epblf4v/Gear_Fit_Nexus
youtu.be/Sk0vsx6k-cU
download those files
install GR.gearmanagerstub.apk
then install gear fit update 1.25.apk
open the app and pair the fit. it should connect. you can use it like this but the update ads a few features like screen rotation.
now you need to get a samsung phone that is compatible and update the fit to 1.49
now you uninstall GR.gearmanagerstub.apk and gear fit update 1.25.apk
now install gearfitmanager1.49update.apk and gearfitinstaller.apk and pair your device. everything should be working perfectly.
i am also claiming the first nexus 5 working with the gear fit
Edit: I just found a "lite" version of s-health that DOES work. Here's the link
Apparently I can post links now too. Awesome

That's awesome man. Crazy world, I discovered a very similar process with my HTC One M8 and M7. I just sideloaded the apps downloaded from Samsung's App Store onto the M8 and M7. Connected the Gear Fit and it worked. Only thing I couldn't get working was quick reply and alarm notifications. Just goes to show that it's totally possible though. Great work! I hope Samsung decides to open this up to other devices officially.

Yep quick reply and alarm don't work for me either. But I'm thinking we need the Samsung clock and SMS app and then it should work.

Hey dude! First thread I've found that got things working more or less! Good job and congrats on your mad ninja hacker skilz!
Question 1: Where's the video link? I'd love to see it.
Next... I just went through loading 1.25 and pairing as you described. Amazing! It worked! WooHoo!! Thanks!
During the loading process my Gear Fit decided it wanted to update it's firmware over Bluetooth.
After the update, the Gear Fit says "Software Version R350XXU0ANCF" .
Question 2: Do I still need to track down a Samsung phone and do more upgrading for the Fit's firmware or do you think it's already updated it's self as much as it needs and I can install 1.49 now?
I did try to install the 1.49 apk but at that point things fell apart and no more pairing. I went back to 1.25 and all was well. I hear 1.29 also works.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sk0vsx6k-cU&feature=youtu.be thats the video its in the OP.
my fit firmware is R350XXU0BND8 which i am pretty sure is a newer version because my fit works with the app version 1.49. if there is no option to rotate the screen in the settings on the fit then you are not on the newest version.
also im pretty sure you heard that 1.29 works from me in another post. that was a typo, as far as i know there is no 1.29.
Thank you very much. I tried it out and it works!
I can also install and open the lite version of S Health. But how can i sync it now? I can't login with a Samsung account. Wh i click on the login button, nothing happens....
Thanks again.
Wohooo, you are great. I could follow your steps.
I have only 2 problems:
a) I have no supported device to upgrade the Fit to 1.49 - will have to ask around in office if somebody has a supported Galaxy. Anyway, it would be great if we could manage to get the upgrading function working so we are independent of any special device requirements... not sure, what's missing here, because as somebody earlier mentioned: when pairing it with 1.25 the first time, it downloads a huge firmware update and pushes it to the Fit who afterwards reboots... but either it didn't work or it is not 1.49
b) Have the same problem with the S-Health lite - it can be started, but it is not able to logon to a Samsung account or sync with the Fit
Anyway, this is a huge progress so far. I bought my Fit today. It was released yesterday and only one single store had it on stock - when I found your thread, I immediately rushed to the store
Thank you so much for all the details you figured out so far.

a) try going to bestbuy or another store that has them on display. They won't bother you about it. The guys at my store were trying to help! And the firmware update to 1.25 isn't an update. Its part of the fitmanager apk. There's also a firmware update in the 1.49 apk that is different. Originally I was trying to move the firmware from the new one to the old one but it wasn't working so I decided to just go to bestbuy and do it with their phones.
b) it doesn't work for me either. Neither does weather. But I'm still working on it.
And I bought my fit when it came out. I got it at the att store. At that point I didn't even know of it would work with the nexus but I decided it would be worth a shot and if I couldn't do it or someone else couldn't either then I'd just return it.
Also to the other question about notifications. Did you try to enable notification sharing in settings?
Hehe, I am really thankful that you tried and posted. You were the reason I dared to buy it. I'm from Germany, so no Best Buy. But not a problem, I work in a huge software company and there are several of these devices for internal tests available, so I may get a grip on one of them tomorrow to do the update. I am so interested to check the sleep tracker.
Notifications works for me like charm. Caller notification worked immediately, for the rest you can enable the general notifications and choose all applications you'd like to receive notifications from. I tried it with WhatsApp, it worked immediately, even showing the text including Chinese characters which are tricky. I am really happy.
As I can workaround the FW upgrade issue myself, my biggest dream would be to get the S-Health app working as this is the way to check your data and statistics. I am happy that the big display also lets you read most of this data, so it is not a total show stopper for now. We must keep in mind that it might happen that we never get the Samsung tools working. They are using TouchWiz stuff and Samsung accounts. So Samsung also would possibly not being happy that people not using their devices (that might also cross-finance the cloud servers) could use their infrastructure and trying to hinder this.

Samsung should be happy we're buying their smartwatches. i dont know if theres a way to get touchwiz on the nexus, but if you could it would probably be possible to get everything working.
is anyones working with alarms set on your phone? i cant get that to work either.
At least I can confirm: having connected it with a Samsung Galaxy S3 and Gear Fit Manager 1.49, it immediately downloaded a new FW for the Fit and now GFM 1.49 can connect to the Gear Fit and sleep tracking is also available now. Great!
would you guys say this is usable enough to buy?
Depends. For me it is. If you are not interested in alarms to wake you up and can help yourself by borrowing a compatible Samsung phone to make the firmware update and receive new functionality like sleep tracking, then you only will face one important issue:
you cannot sync the measured data to your phone, as this is done by S-Health which currently does not work. The Fit with its big display can still show you all relevant data and also historical data, so that is not a 100% no-go. But for the people who like to browse through fitness stats of past months on an app or in a browser, this is still a show stopper.

Cannot pair Gear 2 neo with my phone
Hi, I just JB my gear 2 neo. The jailbreak went out OK, the problem is that when I try to pair it with the phone, cause it wont pair, my gear 2 neo is just stuck in the "Selct device on gear manager" window and my phone is stuck at the "connecting to gear" window. Now, this phone is a chinese one running kit kat 4.4.2 and it's temporary (I'm getting an LG G3 soon). I was wondering if that issue is caused by my phone model (solone SL-SA5) or if I did something wrong.

Thank you for replying. Well, actually, it's ticked. Turns out it is paired with my phone but can't get synchronized with the gear manager. Let me explain myself: My gear shows as linked in my bluetooth seetings on my phone. The audio thingy is ticked, but when I start the gear manager and I try to synchronize it, my phone supposedly starts syncing but the gear beeps twice and it won't sync, it wouldn't do anything. Anyway, I'm buying an LG G3 soon and I'm giving away this one to my father, but still I'd like to be able to synch it with that phone in case I decide to give my dad my gear 2 in the future.

I installed the latest gear manager available in this forum, but I can't seem to find the multimedia control. IDK if it has to do with my phone model (LG G3) Or just the gear manager version I installed. Does anyone have info bout this issue?

Modded apps. Are installed via your phone. And pushed through gear manager as an apk
Has there been any discussion on doing a cosmetic overhaul in the rom, such as replacing the icons for pedometer, messages, etc? The basic icons on the fit look okay, but for something larger as this watch, it would be nice to see something colorful and more stylish. Especially if people are using the watch styler app to try and get a premium feeling look watch face. Thanks for everything you have done!
Gear 2 Neo with LG G2
Hi, I got my new Gear 2 Neo over the black friday weekend ... I'm using it with my LG G2 and it works good for the most part.. I'm using the Gear Manager APK version 2.1.14062401
installed on my phone.
Following works fine:
All notifications (Email, SMS, Whatsapp, GMAIL etc)
All the stock apps like pedometer, exercise, sleep, heart rate etc..
Dialer (dialing out and answering calls)
Clock
what doesn't work:
Alarm
Weather updates
Answering to texts (I understand this wouldn't work anyway)
Sync with S-health (or any health app)
My question is 1) Does upgrading to Tizen 3.0 mod fix any of the issues that isn't working on my phone ?
2) I don't care about alarm or weather updates, but the Gear 2 Neo doesn't provide too much info on steps/exercise or Sleep.. Does the tizen mod address this issue? Can we sync with S-health or any other health app from non-samsung phones..??
I'm asking this purely because if the new mod doesnt address my issues, I wouldn't bother upgrading it (as I'm worried I might brick it)... Please advise.. Thanks

Gear S3 with MI Mix

Has anyone tried Samsung Gear S3 (Frontier if it matters) with Mi Mix? how was your experience? i'm thinking of getting an Gear S3 Frontier but i want to make sure it works properly. The reason i'm asking is that i've had some problems receiving notifications on my Moto 360 with android wear. i'm wondering if the same applies to the Gear software/watch aswell. i'm using Fenix 3 with Garmin Connect atm and haven't had any problems. Thanks in advance
The notifications etc come through fine when using the Gear S3 with the Mi Mix. The problem you will have is the Gear Manager app doesn't work correctly do you won't be able to install new watch faces our new apps on your Gear S3. All the pre-installed apps work fine.
Sent from my MIX using Tapatalk
I've been using the Mi mix with the Gear S3 for about a month now. Notifications work fine for the most part including whatsapp and other 3rd party app notifications. A couple of things to keep in mind are that as mrjubei72 mentioned the app store will not load apps so you cannot download any additional apps or watch faces and can only use what came by default with the watch. I started with a vendor rom tried the Global stable china rom and now I'm on the EU rom and have this issue on all roms regardless of root status. Another minor problem is that you cannot browse your phone's music library through the music app on the S3. It shows you whats currently playing and gives you the usual volume skip/repeat controls etc but wont let you browse other artists and chose a different song. The S3 music app widget does however show now playing on youtube and soundcloud which is handy. The last issue I've encountered is that unless you set up all 3 gear apps to be allowed to run in the background on MIUI it will keep disconnecting from the watch. This can easily be solved by tinkering around with the permissions and power saving settings on the Mix.
Besides the limitations while using it with the Mi Mix the Gear S3 is a fantastic watch. S health can be downloaded and works great to track activity. The battery life is phenomenal will get through almost 2 full days with the screen always on and on high brightness. The included watch faces are excellent and the Tizen interface along with the rotating bezel make it a pleasure to use. If you're considering it I'd definitely suggest getting the watch you will not regret it. As far as the app store problems we're hoping they will be solved with the official Global rom when it is released but I wouldn't count on it.
I am using the Gear S3 with my Mi Mix and I don't have any problems. I was also able to download apps, but now it looks like the samsung store won't open...
But, I am encountering a real problem (due to the Mi Mix way to handle bluetooth) where if my Gear S3 is connected, I can't use any other bluetooth device (such as my car audio system). I will have to force the connection to my car system and won't get any notifications until I manually connect to the Gear again...

Does Samsung pay work with the gear s3 and mi mix?
I don't think any Samsung market app will work on non Samsung devices without some sort of intervention. If you buy or use Samsung watches you will need to keep this in mind, having come from a number of Huawei devices I had to let my Samsung watch go [sold it] and moved on to a more generically compatible watch [in this case a Moto 360].

I was running the China ROM up to 8.2.3 and everything work including installing new watch faces. I recently switched to the Global ROM 8.2.1 and I can no longer install watch face. Does not make sense as to why it won't work other than a Samsung control issue.
Any workaround for this? Can't install any apps on my Gear S3. Any ROMs currently compatible with Gear Apps?

I took the plunge and got a Gear S2 and so far everything works fine, notifications, calls, etc ... between the watch and the phone. You MUST give the three apps permissions and take them off battery restrictions. I have them all on auto start too. The ONLY issue is if you want apps or new faces you will have to find some way to side load them, as the Samsung App market will NOT run on the mix. Otherwise I am pretty happy with the combination of the two, I do use S Health also and so far no issues there.

The app doesn't run because its checking for things a Samsung only has [proprietary things], it can be fooled but its a lot of work and often makes things unstable.

Well, it shouldn't be checking for anything proprietary as the Gear S3 is designed to work with all Android devices. From what I've seen, only the Mix is facing this issue and not other Mi devices. So it looks like its something about the Mix that's causing the incompatibility.
The gear app just started working for me on the unofficial RR build. I'm not sure how or why because i didn't flash a new build, but it works. Hope this helps
Same here out of the blue the Samsung app built into the gear manager started working. No idea why.

Not referring to the Samsung Gear App, I am talking about the Samsung Galaxy App Store. Which does check to see if it's a Samsung running the app.
Mine randomly started working as well.
