Is there a way to optimize the battery use for games? - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a note 3 rooted and I get really good battery life out of everything but playing games. It doesn't even seem to matter if the game is very graphics intensive. If I use my phone for just web browsing, texting, calls, facebook etc I can easily get a whole day with room to spare. I turn on a game like a civilization builder type of game and the battery loses about a % a minute. These civilization builder games have very basic graphics but seem to eat up the battery as quick as very graphic intensive games. Last night I had it on for about 4 hours and was still around the 90% mark and played a game for an hour and it was int he 30's. Is there anyway to optimize the battery usage for games? I'm not sure if the phone is set to really push the processor on any game even if it doesn't really need it, or if games that send data over the web just eat up battery life. I'm not sure it is connected to the web usage because I can spend hours on the web reading articles and looking at facebook with negligible battery drain. It seems like any game eats the battery up like no other. Maybe I just need to turn on power saving mode when I play games?

Quick Battery Loss|Stock Rom/Kernel/4.2.2|

Hello everyone,
Over the past week I have noticed my HTC One runs out of battery quickly when watching videos/playing games.
I have downloaded a wakelock detector and it sleeps 99% of the time, mainly because I have used Greenify to make sure that there are no wakelock problems.
I always have my phone on minimum brightness (not auto, just 0) with mobile data turned off most of the time. Wifi is usually on. NFC and Bluetooth are both almost always off. My screen powers off after 45 seconds, and data turns off if the screen is off for an extended period of time. On top of that, Power saver mode is always on with all 4 features ticked.
I do not have a problem with the phone leaking battery, but rather than when i begin to do intensive tasks, e.g. playing games (Bloons Tower Defence 5 for instance) the phone seems to lose the battery very quickly.
I found that within 5 minutes of playing I would lose about 2-3%. This means that within 3-4 hours I would run out of battery completely. Is this normal? How have other users fared with the battery and finally, what else do people recommend I do to save some more battery?
Thanks
Playing drains the battery as hell. From such a powerhouse it is not surprising tough.
I usually play logical games, and "ye' good ol' Carmageddon" sometimes. While 2D games are pretty ok, demanding 3D games will eat your battery as you said.
For example, I have lost 40% battery after playing Carmaggeddon for about 90 minutes.
On the other, when using the phone as phone, not as gaming device, the battery is pretty sweet.
I can get 8 hours on screen time with one charge, and lasts me through the whole day - auto brightness, auto-sync, wifi or mobile data always on - BT, NFC disabled.
For comparison, I managed to get around 4.5-5.5 hours with the same settings from my iPhone 5. And gaming ate battery super fast on that phone as well - I only
dared to play with a charger nearby (Max Payne).
To save some juice I recommend to set a lower CPU frequency when playing games (for those do not need all the power) - but that requires root.
Other than that, it seems you already have all the options enabled.

Thanks for the reply.
It's nice to know that it isnt just my phone that seems to drain like hell while playing any of the more resource-hungry games.
Thanks

There is no problem having 47C when playing games. There is no relation between disk space and CPU temp. 8-10 hours of battery life means nothing without info about display usage, wifi usage, mobile data usage. Mine can easily makes 2 days when I'm not using it at all. I really doubt it will last more than 8 hours playing games. Hope it help

20-25% of battery drop under heavy usage for an hour looks fine imo. You should take a screenshot of your battery graph and post it here so it will be easier to determine if 10 hours of battery life is normal in your case. You might want to look at this thread and compare your values: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2195079
Whatever you do, don't try to check your laptop's CPU temperature or you'll think it's about to cook itself to death!
45° is fine; maybe even a little cool for that kind of heavy usage. The One feels hotter than other phones despite operating at the same temperatures because of the conductive metal back. Don't worry.

[Q] Battery Question

I played SimCity BuildIt for 3 straight hours and my battery went empty. Is that normal?
Never played that particular game, but a lot of games are murder on your battery life. Especially ones with lots of 3D graphics.
try to optimise your game, i play SimCity Too, and my battery drops well after a couple of time, but not as much as Clash of Clans, this game just empty it ! maybe it's a Lollipop issue, dunno.
Clash of clans is made by the same developer as Boom Beach which is what I play, and its stucks the life out of my battery, I dont think lollipop is the issue.

Battery Life experiences

Just curious on people's battery life experiences so far. This seems to be the main negative I hear about this device from reviews. I am most likely going to get the device nonetheless.
I don't feel like the battery life is that bad on this device.
I can get through a hole day very easily. I play some games (but not that much), I listen to a lot of music and I use Chrome very often.
Still I have about 40% at the end of the day.
For a device with a 1440*2560 5.7 inch screen and a Snapdragon 810 I reckon that it is pretty good.
I can only tell you to get this device it is awesome
Battery life for me is pretty terrible. The battery drain is significant even when the phone is in idle. I usually have access to a charger throughout the course of a day and I feel the need to keep it connected as often as possible. I still love the phone, but the battery life is the worst I have experienced with any phone I have had in the last couple of years, and I have used many. I leave it on balanced mode for the majority of the day and only switch to performance mode when I am going to play a graphic intensive game.

Yikes. Have you tried any software like Greenify to help alleviate the problem or it still persists ?

No, I haven't tried any apps or other battery profiles. Like I said, I keep it plugged in a lot during the day, so I have never felt the need to see how far I could stretch a single charge. This is also the way I have kept all of my previous phones and the Xiaomi drains the battery the fastest in comparison.
Mine lasts me about 12hours. I listen to music most of the day and I'm a heavy user.
Got the phone 2 days ago. got around 4 hours 15 minutes SOT from 7am till 9pm on the international rom. Better than i was expecting. Hopefully I can improve it further.
I have to admit that over time the battery got worse. That would be because I have more apps etc..
What is your SOT time usually?
I noticed today my battery SOT and idle drain has been really bad. The only thing I think I did diffrently was that I logged onto my miui account last night so i could download themes. I have no use for the miui account other htan the themes so I will try logging out and seeing how things are after it....
2-9% per hour is not bad i guess...
If i use it a lot, then only it will go as far as 11% per hour and mostly because the big QHD screen,
When it sleep, it almost didnt drain...
Of course you have to kill/disable all those stupid google play services... Named it Event Log and Checkin handoff etc etc

Bad battery life and stuttery performance

My battery life has been terrible as of late and i have to charge my battery twice a day now. It also seems to get hot while doing mundane tasks. The UI and internet browser get laggy and stuttery after a couple hours after a restart. I'm planning on wiping the phone since i haven't done one in nine months. I've attached some screens. Does anything look weird? I also suspect i may have killed my battery capacity. The past few weeks I've been playing soda dungeon (a video game) by letting it run on auto-combat for several hours each day while laying on a wireless charger on the lowest screen brightness. Its pretty hot when I pick it up after a session. Oh btw the three hours the chart shows i haven't been doing anything beyond checking my email and browsing the web. I dunno why media server is doing at the top.
