Returning N3. Staying with N1. - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't want this to turn into a flamewar thread. I like my N3 very much. It has certain deficiencies that work on my N1.
Specifically, On my N1, I am able to mount the SD card as a USB drive that is recognized by my PC and my laptop. I have been unable to figure out how to do that on my N3. It is recognized, but shows up as "Card" and "Phone". QuickBooks 2013 requires a drive letter to backup to. On the N1, I tap menu-->settings-->Wireless-->USB Utilities-->Connect storage to PC. Connect N1 to PC then touch Connect. That isn't possible on the N3, that I can find.
My SM-N900A is rooted so the drivers must be properly installed on my PC. There isn't any menu options like above on the N3. If anyone knows how, PLEASE post.
If I can't make this function work, this device will be unrooted and returned to the seller tomorrow.
The N3 has a great screen and very good battery life compared SIDE-BY-SIDE to my still active N1. But it seems that Samsung has dumbed down this device's capabilities as the device numbers progress. There are things my N1 will do that my N3 will not. That combined with the locked bootloader makes it impossible at this time for me to turn this device into the productive work machine that my N1 currently is.
Samsung's constant renaming of the internal and external memory is driving me nuts as well. Individual apps don't know where to backup to. EVERYTHING winds up in storage/emulated 0. The app devs have not been able to keep up with these constant changes so backing up data is useless.
Thank you for any help. My thanks also to designgears and chainfire for the ability to root this device. Maybe I'll see you for the N4.

Why open your sentence about not wanting to start a flamewar when you know that's exactly what will happen.
Anyhow, reading through your post, it seems like you have issues that 99% of the people buying a Note 3 won't care about or even notice. They are issues very specific to you.
So, keep your N1 if that makes you happy while other people will enjoy their N3's.

I have quickbooks pro plus 2014 and I'm able to back up data to mine. (I don't normally do that but I had to try it since you said it wouldn't)
Not sure what the issue is for you on that one, wish I could help.
I would return your Note 3 because you seem like you're more experienced with your Note 1 and that's what you are comfortable with.

Could you please tell me how you were able to backup your QB? Does it show your N3 as a drive? Please be specific as I would really like to keep this N3.
Thank you.

When I go to back it up I get a gooey interface vs. the old style drive selection. I'm not sure if that's a 2014 feature or not, I've always used the Intuit data backup. You just select your note 3 and then the card or phone...and backup from there. Not sure what's happening with yours.

I just found this on another forum about the drive letter. It's not the Note 3, but I'm sure it's the same thing for us as well.
The problem is that the SGIII (as with most Android 4 devices) does not connect as a USB Mass Storage device (Google dropped support for USBMS in Android 4). It connects as an MTP device instead and Windows does not see MTP devices as a mass storage devices, so as indicated by worwig, you don't get a device to connect to. That is why I've had to use resort to using webdav.

I don't see what your Note 1 can do that your Note 3 doesn't do ? Besides storage issues and Quickbooks I don't see what else you can have a problem with..like the other user said those problems seem more like personal issues...

As I said in my opening statement...I like my N3 very much. I asked for help and also listed some personal observations regarding how this device fits MY needs. You are correct, they are personal issues. Since I purchased this device to serve my needs, I am entitled to have a personal issue when those needs are not met for ME. The fanboy comments are not necessary. I'm sorry you are personally offended by my opinions of MY N3. As such, move on and disregard this thread please. If you have a helpful comment to make, please do it.
Thank you.

Can you just get a stick mount program. I know its 3rd party but the OG note is 16 gb while thr N3 is 32. You could allocate the extra space and still have the same space as the N1. I have the N1 also and can appreciate your thoughts but with the N1 becoming more dated everyday I think it would be at least worth considering more options before writing it off completely. Either way good luck with your decision!

I was unable to duplicate your results. I neglected to say my PC is Win7 Pro. I was able to find a work around. I am able to backup QB to my Documents folder on my PC and then move that backup to the card on my N3. Not as smooth as direct, but very do-able. That's my biggest problem solved. Thank you!
Things are looking up!

I own a dental office. I do full image backups daily and that is a lot of data to send to the cloud. Very expensive and rather inconvenient. I carry my last 3 QB backups from my home laptop on my phone because it is always with me 24/7. Phone theft is non-existant in my small rural town. This method seems to work well for me and avoids an unnecessary $200 monthly cloud storage expense. Also allows me to backup even if I don't have cloud access.

Just a thought about the drive letter issue. Have you tried simply remaining "phone" and "card" to letters like"E" or "F" on your PC? I know you now have a work around, just wondering if you tried that

Why not use Dropbox to store them for free? Surely your backups aren't that huge? I'm an IT guy for many doctor offices and dental offices as well. A free Dropbox account is plenty big to hold the latest 3 backups. Also intuit data protect isn't that expensive if you want to look at that option. There are a ton of other options you can have that can be free or very low cost to you. If you need help or want some advice feel free to PM me.

LOLLOLLOL!!!!!!!!!!
Dun need an antivirus for mobile now, especially android. LOL
Virus is common only in Windows platform, not on Linux and iOS platform
Antivirus = wasting RAM, Battery and Memory Space. Haha.
Try google if anyone got virus on Android mobile phone? LOL.
We only got "bugs", no virus
If you know what you are downloading you really don't need a antivirus on your phone, but if you want one ESET Mobile Security is very lite and excellent.
You don't even notice it is there.
anti virus for android is kinda like wearing a condom to dry hump... its a waste of money and there is no need for it
using antivirus is about as useful as using atk lol
You dont need anykind of antivir but if you believe so, then you should use lookout
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I don't believe in antiviruses for android either. I just use Lookout for the find my phone feature.
For those using Lookout, any of you notice it starts eating more and more RAM the longer your phone is turned on? Like mine starts at around 18MB or so then after a few days it creeps up to 30+?
Me not, but i used lookout just for 3 days or something like that

Lookout is excellent. Don't care much about anti virus but for locating a lost phone remote wipe etc you can't beat it. I also use lbe privacy guard to block out un wanted network access. That paired with droid wall and your set

Probably this is why you need an anti-virus type app? I use Aegislab Antivirus Free. Monitors incoming apps and lets me they're clean.. Worth the bother i think...
should you really want to use one,
download 'ALYac' on market.

You loose your phone that frequently that you need an app to find it? Really?
I had my phone stolen once and I had no way to wipe it. I didn't care about finding it, I just wanted my data wiped. I had the opportunity too since the robber used my phone for an entire day before my telco finally cut my line off. I never cared before then either, but now I have Lookout turned on. Its added insurance particularly if your phone carries sensitive emails or contacts.
I use AegisLab Antivirus, it has free version, quick & neat.
Paid version has remote lock & wipe functionalities also SMS filtering for phishing link.

And IMO offline storage is more useful, especially on a Wifi-only device, but also for anyone else with a limited data plan on their phone or data connection capable tablet. Also, pretty sure a $9 16GB USB stick is more cost effective than pretty much any 16GB cloud storage option.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
There is actually a thread over in the Themes and Apps section that the developer made. He is really open to input. I like the app, as I don't have to root to use a flash drive with videos saved on it.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
Well, isn't that a kick in the teeth, because I just rooted last night simply to use USB OTG. At first I kind of felt "meh" over the read only factor, but then I got to thinking, am I really going to need to transfer from tablet to external media? I'd much rather transfer from external media to tablet, do what I need to do with watching whatever content I may have, then simply delete it off the tablet... no reason to transfer it back when it's the same darn file. Some people may have uses for having a 2 way setup, but I'm sure this will fit the bill for a lot of people. I do find it a considerable bummer that ext* file systems aren't supported, but meh.
Thank you thank you thank you!

i dont understand the bickering of cloud data. it is nice but i have 20 hours of plane flights coming up. cloud data will not be a very good solution for me compared to plugging a hard drive into my tablet.
Being a non-root user, this is great news for me. I always used splashtop to watch my videos directly from my computer, though it gave me no trouble, I would much rather have the movie with me.
Can't wait till the developer puts it back up.
What is the name of the app? Can anyone share the APK?

It will continue to be their flagship phone until the October-December time frame when they usually release their newer models. Remember that Larry Page recently visited LG where they proposed their ideas just like last year, because that's how the nexus program works. I don't expect Google to release a new flagship phone until the end of the year especially since they just discussed a deal.

Does it even matter if the Nexus 4 isn't the "newest" Nexus? It's more than powerful enough to handle many more Android versions to come, so at least we'll be updated.

It's a bit tough for those of us with large-ish music collections. Particularly if we rip at 320kbps bit rate. I'm constantly bumping against the limit. And I don't even have games on my N4. I'd gladly welcome a 32gb or 64gb variant of the next one.
Actually, I hope they stick with the "all glass" format. I think it's sexy.
Wireless charging orbs will not be for just one phone!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, that's why I had to give up my N4. I live and work out in the boonies and unless I can store it on my device, most of the time I don't have access to it.
And, since Google did come out with a 32 GB N7 and dropped the 8 GB model after a while, I'm hoping they do the same with the N4. If they do, I'll be blowing my money on an another N4.

T-Mobile is truly unlimited! So cloud is an option, or another option is don't buy phones with locked memory.

Cloud is not always an option. To be honest it makes listening to music annoying at best. Mainly if you live in a place where your data bounces in and out. As for unlimited T-mobile they still throttle you at a point so still not a viable option. Also cloud storage is still not accepted in alot of business so having a good amount of internal storage is a good thing.
We will not see an SD card slot until the average person get smarter. So dont count on it anytime soon
Semantics said:
Reality is simple, cloud storage is where we are all being steered toward. If you can't embrace it, or afford one of the cheap unlimited data packages offered, do yourself and everyone else a favor and buy a 64gb ipod. It floors me that people still feel the need to have 30 gigs of music on their phone.

Why give up on convenience? it just requires a lot more work to delete and add the music you want to listen to today. Also, it's not only for music. People store games, applications, photos, videos etc on their phones too and 16/32 GB can be filled pretty fast with that stuff.
Sure, some things are "moving to the cloud", which doesn't mean that every new trend that's emerging somewhere is good. The "cloud" has way too many flaws to be considered an alternative to any kind of local storage.
First and foremost, there are a lot of privacy concerns.
Are you really going to confide all your private stuff to some company that is most likely based in another country where you have no or hardly any control about what really happens with all your data? Also, most companies are going to hand out information about you to governments without questioning it.
Furthermore, what happens if such company gets hacked? All your intimate stuff will be exposed to potentially malicious people.
Then, there can be loads of problems when you're trying to access your data.
What if your home internet goes down? Or you are in an area with no or only a slow connection? Maybe the host's website is inaccessible? Right, no access to your stuff.
The cloud is way to dependent on 3rd parties and other effects you have no control of. While everyone tries to increase their data's security and accessibility, the cloud is an enormous step backwards.
Last but not least, what if the cloud provider goes out of business or gets shut down by law enforcement like Megaupload did some time ago? Thousands of legitimate users lost all the stuff they entrusted to Megaupload and there is no way for them to get it back any time soon.
tl;dr: Don't blindly follow some obscure trend just because the media or anybody else tells you to.
I don't see a inconvenience, the cloud is a new technology, don't get stuck in the past. As for music and work I have no problems

So I'm not understanding something why does the S6 and S6E have root and roms but S6A doesn't?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
Perhaps because the S6 active just came out. Ping pong root doesn't work on kernels after May 15th (from memory). Give it time, they'll get it.
AoN
It also might be because the active version isn't as common and developers need to get their hands on it and their images to work on it.

Is an image something I could upload for somome to help? Or would we need to all chip in for a s6a?

I would be willing to pay the shipping and lend my active to a dev if that's what it takes to get root

What is this thread about? May be fake as I don't see files to download.
MOD EDIT LINKS TO OUTSIDE SOURCES NOT ALLOWED ESPECIALLY THOSE WHICH MAY CAUSE DAMAGE TO A DEVICE
Nevermind, I don't think any of these are legit.
Its a fake site, so they can make ad revenue. Cf-auto-root is currently not available for active versions of the s6.

Bottom line, we need to show more activity on the forums to show developers there's enough interest in the active for them to try to do an exploit. Truth is, active is IMHO better than regular s6 just because the battery lasts longer.
I don't even want a custom rom for the active I just want root so I can debloat and use my dualshock 3 to play video games via the bluetooth connection instead of wired

Same here and change the govener and an app called air tunes that let's you push any audio from your phone to any airplay device and best of all as many devices as you want with audio sync. It's great!
Oh did I say it needs root lol!
+1
Same here!
I want debloat, restore mi app data with Titanium Backup and greenify.
I have my brand new AT&T Samsung Galaxy S6 Active - yes Root would be Great!!
Thanks to the dev's in advance.
I got the active the day after it launched and I've been checking xda 5+ times a day hoping to find a root method I really miss using my sixaxis to play video games and I really wanna debloat

Its funny, active had such a bad reputation that my neighbors just looked at mine and are upset that their battery isn't as big and that they don't have a waterproof design. One of them said it best, I gladly give up fingerprint reader and heart rate sensor to have a bigger battery and a waterproof case. This is especially true living in Florida where it seems there is pool everywhere you look and almost every day has rain!

There is a heart rate sensor that seems to work; it's on the back next to the camera.

Lol even more reason to go with the active version!
Is there a bounty thread yet for S6 Active?
I would give $100 to the first dev that roots the active

Note 5 Owners Questions Thread

I figured I would make this thread so people who don't have the note 5 could ask owners questions. Camera questions, screen questions, performance questions!! Any questions!! Ask away!
How much usable memory is on the 64gb and 32 GB?

I +1 this question
And
Is the fingerprint scanner a swipe type like the note 4?
i already have a bunch of stuff on it, so i can't say about the available storage fresh out off the box.
But for the fingerprint scanner - no, it's not swipe. just touch. i must say it's fast and accurate.
Hey hows the software? Can you open a few apps and switch betweem them smoothly?
Hoping the note doesnt have the ram problem the s6 did
Do ear buds come with the Verizon variant or do we get screwed again?

I guess it depends how many apps - and which ones - you juggle with.
I did not restart my phone the last 48 hours. Now I successively open email (shared inbox), play store (my apps page), play newstand (any given feed), quickpick (a folder with ~ 1,000 pics), maps, freecell (and launch one game), the chive (and open one post), hangouts (one given conversation), habit browser (and open a heavy website).
Recent Apps open fast, the Note 4 lag is definitely gone.
Switching to the 10th app in the list shows it has been closed. the app re-loads. but where it was (same thread or page or folder etc.). So if the apps open fast, it's fast. if it's a slow loading app, it's slower. but you get back to where you were anyway. and slower does not necessarily mean slow. that phone is fast.
But if i stick to only the 4 or 5 most recent ones, it's pretty much instant, no reloading.

I thought I would come back and leave this here. I guess I did install some stuff. Here is information on the storage for my 32gb.
I also wanted to come back and leave these. If anyone has any suggestions on what I can do to ensure a precise bench mark using Vallamo or Antutu let me know. Here are my results before and after encryption.

Damn I have 16Gb of music on my s6 (102gb used out of 112.62gb)
I really would prefer the 32gb (price) but I'm not sure I can manage (32gb + 64gb otg storage)
Does anyone know which Languages the S Pen on the note 5 can handle. I.e. can it handle European Languages like Norwegian, even though a localized version will not be sold at the moment?
If anyone knows how to change the snooze to longer than 5 minutes please tell me. I'm not sure why they would make that the only option.
