hosts file being ignored - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
Just got an i9295. It's rooted and I'm using xposed framework to get some additional functionality that I'm missing from aokp.
But I've noticed that my active ignores my custom hosts file.
I've tried searching but my Google fu doesn't seem during enough to find anyone else having the same problem with either the active or the "normal" s4.
Can anyone offer a suggestion as to what I can do?
I'm placing my hosts file in /etc/hosts with permissions set to rwxrwxrwx
The same file worked previously on aokp on a galaxy nexus.
Thanks in advance =)

Never mind...
I fixed it.
I re encoded the file with Unix-like line terminators.
It works now.

OPEN VPN

Has anyone managed to get Open VPN working on a Galaxy S? I have a SPICA on which it is working but I cant find a TUN.KO that works on the Galaxy S. Thanks
Also trying to find a proper TUN.KO for the Galaxy S.
No luck so far.
Read here: http://android.modaco.com/content-page/291919/openvpn-on-android/page/20/
None of the methods described for other phones worked for Samsung Galaxy S. I tried with several tun.ko and all where giving me "format errors" as the kernel was not matching.
Last resort, I compile it myself from Samsung I9000 kernel sources.
Tested it and worked. I know have OpenVPN in Galaxy S (I9000)!
I attach the tun.ko file. I hope other guys out there with I9000 can use it.
Excellent. Will give it a go. Which ROM are you running?
I'm currently running I9000BGF1, I will be soon upgrading to new Firmware.
Kernel Version: 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Hi Chafw,
Can you talk me through where you put the tun.ko, and where you put your OpenVPN files in the directories? I'm getting no where fast on this!
Thanks
SA
Hi mittu1,
I believe you are already root and busybox/openvpn installed.
I used the same link that tids2k wrote above to setup the whole thing up.
I used openvpn-settings application for starting up openvpn configurations.
In openvpn-settings you can define where the tun.ko driver is located.
Anyway, the simplest thing to do firdst to test whether the tun.ko works for you is to
load it by hand using a root shell:
insmod <path to tun.ko>
I have it installed in /system/lib/modules/tun.ko.
Hope this helps.
The tun.ko is ok, it loads nicely. Many many many thanks !!!
In the "OpenVpn Settings" app, my connection ask me for a password, I see "auth", then nothing, I fall back in front of the "select to turn on OpenVPN tunnel" button.
I have tried with stock libcrypto.so and libssl.so, and then with those from openvpn-binary.zip at hxxp://sourceforge.net/projects/tunneldroid/files/
The OpenVPN app still don't want to establish the connection... In no ways... And no log message in dmesg at all (neither for tun)
So it's enough for this night, but if someone have an idea, you are (really) welcome !!!
Does the module have to match the kernel version exactly? Running european JM2,
kernel is 2.6.29 [email protected]3#2
PS. 1st Post
Do you copy tun.ko in the /lib/modules folder ? or in a new freshly created folder /system/lib/modules (as said on modaco guide) ?
On my system (XXJF3 / XXJF3 / XAJF3), I have no /system/lib/modules folder, and every time a mount in rw my /, then write tun.ko to /lib/modules, then remount in readonly, and then reboot the phone, the tun.ko file disappear...
Do I miss something ? Does the / mount point isn't a real partition ???
thnks in advance
@ Anduru:
No, don't think that is necessary but I'm also quite new to Android.
@raphman:
I created a new folder /system/lib/modules. I didn't have the directory either.
Anyway the OpenVpn-settings applications allow to define the location of the tun.ko. Haven't tried but I believe you could put it anywhere in the system.
Also, make sure the ifconfig and route commands are available and properly linked.
@chafw
thanks for your reply
meanwhile i just tried my luck and it worked.
Guys,
I'm glad it's working but I haven't managed it yet!!
I'm using the I9000XWJM2 rom, rooted! I've downloaded the tun.ko file, the open VPN Setting file off the market, and Open VPN installer. I've got the certs and config files.
Can some one please guide me through installation to get it up and running OR did people use the following link instructions
http://android.modaco.com/content/software/291919/openvpn-on-android/
Would really appreciate someone's help here.
Chaf, many thanks, but in fact, my installation was ok, it was a password problem... Arrrrgggggg !!!!!!!
So now I connect fine to my OpenVpn server, but I cannot reach any server withour using the "Fix DNS" problem.... Strange, because using the connection on my pc automacillay get the DNS given by the vpn....
Many thanks !!!
@raphman:
The DNS is a known issue in Android as OpenVPN uses update-resolv
hook scripts to update the resolv.conf configuration with the passed DNS parameters.
However, this does not work yet with in Android and Openvpn-settings.
You can either use fix-dns or add your hosts in the /etc/hosts file if they are
a limited number.
@mittu1:
Yes, that's the guide.
liblzo
I have got to the stage where my openvpn connection is started but no traffic is being passed through the tunnel. Checking around it seems that I am missing the liblzo.so file that handles compression. Can any of you guys post a working liblzo.so or confirm that your configuration does/doesn't use this file? Thanks.

take it here and 1st step is SAVE your old files somewhere !!!
hxxp://sourceforge.net/projects/tunneldroid/files/openvpn-binary.zip/download
then cp in /system/lib and chmod 755. That's ok on my i9000.
hi,
It didn't work! Still same problem. Any other suggestions?

I tried the tun.ko and it works! Unfortunately my (Endian) firewall can only use a tap device, and apparently both ends have to match. I get the connection, but the the device and IP are never setup. Any chance you can either compile the tap device like you did the tun, or give me the steps so I can do it myself ?

[Q] Connecting Galaxy tab to Ad hoc Network?

Anyone been able to apply a method for connecting a Galaxy tab to a ad hoc wifi network?
I've rooted my tab and poked around for the various fixes but can't get anything to work. I tried the compiled Froyo fix for this but it throws an error when I try to flash the fix using Rom Manager: "failed to verify whole-file signature".
Will this patch need to be resigned for the tab? I'll admit I'm new to the Android world and I'm hoping there's an easy fix for this.
i also want to know how to connect to an ad hoc network. Please help us.
I tether mine using wireless tether on my dinc you just need to enable access control and it will work.
By wireless tether, you mean Bluetooth? What do you mean by "enable access control"?
I have a rooted droid incredible I use "wireless tether" from the market. When you open the app hit menu then access control and just hit enable.
Nope...had me going for a minute though. Funny though,my girlfriends DX can see my ad-hoc tether from my d1?
I would also like to know...
ad-hoc on Galaxy Tab
Having the Galaxy Tab recognize/connect to ad-hoc wireless network is critical for me. Anyone have the answer??
Verizon galaxy tab ad hoc working
After rooting my tab I found this link on the forums: forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7711198&postcount=6
Grabbing the wpa_supicant file from there all I did was use root explorer, which can be found in the android market, to back up my existing wpa_supplicant found in the
/system/bin/ directory at the bottom. Then I copied the newly downloaded file
(after extracting it) and placed it in the above mentioned directory. You will have to press
The r/w button at the top of root explorer in order to enable read write permissions in
/system/bin . I tested this with the wireless tether on my droid original and it works
as advertised.
I am not the one who created this solution nor am I the one who compiled wpa_supplicant
All credit goes to the original author of the solution. I merely wish to convey to you that this solution worked for me. I hope this helps.
*It is important to note th at this was done using a rooted verizon galaxy tab. You will
Have to be at least rooted for this solution to have any chance of working. I used z4root
in order to root my device which can be found by searching these forums or the android market and again I dont claim any credit or participation in the creation of that app.

Yea, you're changing a file on the tab, so as long as you can tether with your inc, you'll be good. This definitely works and is incredibly simple, I'm tethered right now off my droid x.

Maybe this is a total noob problem but, I rooted my tab, followed the instructions and nada. The file says it copied but the date of the file did not change. I refreshed and checked again. I tried to see if the tab would now see my wifi tether from my droid1. No go. My laptop and ipod see the droid wifi but not the galaxy. Any ideas?

Assuming u backed up the original file first to ur sdcard, I actually deleted the one in
/system/bin then copied the modified file there afterward in order to make sure it was replaced and to avoid overwrite issues like that. Give that a try?
And dont forget to mount the folder in "r/w"

This worked great for me. Had to use adb shell and some command line tricks but got the new wpa_supplicant copied and can now use the wifi tether on my phone for internet. Good times.

[MOD] Display A Custom PLMN (with no SPN)

I was really getting tired of my carrier name showing up twice on the lockscreen and taking up extra real estate on my notification drop-down so I figured out how to disable the SPN from showing and how to customize the PLMN to say whatever I want.
KEY FILES TO EDIT
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/optable.db
/system/etc/apns-conf.xml
/system/etc/spn-conf.xml
In the apns-conf.xml make sure your provider is listed with a numeric value.
Here's an example: numeric="311370" mcc="311" mnc="370"
* As you can see the numeric is the MCC plus the MNC.
In the spn-conf.xml make sure your provider is listed with an spnOverride.
Here's an example: <spnOverride numeric="311370" spn_display_rule="SPN_RULE_SHOW_PLMN" spn_override_only_on="310,311"/>
The optable.db needs to be edited with SQLite Database Browser to add your numeric and the text to display.
Here are a few pre-configured downloads:

Very cool mod. I will try this out when I have the time!
thank you
Love this, it worked great on Bionix with 1.3 kernel. For some reason running the same rom with the new 1.4b kernel it no longer works and yes I tried reflashing and wiping a few times. Any ideas?
Hey could you make me one and either PM me or post it up?
I'm on CM7 on a Nexus S, and I don't see a '/system/etc/spn-conf.xml' file. It doesn't seem to exist on mine. I'm on the latest nightly (#8) and have updated everything. Am I missing something?
How exactly did you get these files? I'm having all sorts of trouble with this. First off, the optable.db file is zero K, even when I extract it through ASTRO or Root Explorer with R/W permissions. Secondly, as I mentioned in the last post, the 3rd file is missing from the stated directory.
I'm really confused, as it seems that none of these instructions add up for a Nexus S. I'd like my T-Mobile message to instead display "Nexus S: Pure Android, Pure Google"
Did not work on Modaco R9, CM7 or The Cracker builds...

spns-conf.xml does not exist on the Nexus S originally, but if you place it in /system/etc/ the OS knows to use it.

Still doesn't work. Mounted /system and /data. Does it only work for certain carriers? I'm using a&t
Is there a way to apply this to ALL carriers, rather than selecting one manually.

[GUIDE] How to get enable Google's gesture typing in AOSP keyboard

This is meant to be a guide for people interested in building AOSP based roms and is strictly for developers only. If you wish to have gesture typing in your rom the most simple way is to include/install "LatinImeGoogle.apk".
Not everyone wants to always use google's stock input apk, particularly if you have made modifications into AOSP latinime keyboard if your own and want it to propagate through to your roms without sacrificing gesture input (which i have found is quite useful). Well after some digging around there's good news and bad news.
The good news is that the gesture typing is already in the source tree on the java side and can be enabled by changing packages/inputmethods/LatinIME/java/res/values/gesture-input.xml or using the overlay in devices/../mako (not within scope of this post).
Code:
<bool name="config_gesture_input_enabled_by_build_config">true</bool>
However, just changing the value you will notice that it will draw the gesture but list no words. Thats because google didnt include the "gesture decoder" in the AOSP sources because it is super secret. You can see the code stubs in the C++ part of latinime under native/jni/src/gesture/* .
As a result, libjni_latinime.so will not contain code to decode the gestures and will not read from the dictionary.
BUT! There is a way! You can drop in replace the lib from "LatinImeGoogle.apk" into your system/lib and you will have your gesture decoder!
The library inside the apk is called "libjni_latinimegoogle.so" under /lib/<arch_type>/ inside the apk. You can extract this library from within android using program like root explorer and on PC using android apktool (http://code.google.com/p/android-apktool/). Rename this shared library to "libjni_latinime.so" to replace the AOSP built one and it will decode the gestures through the AOSP based keyboard.
Enjoy!

I see you too have recently had an issue with this. I've followed everything, even using different sources for the libjni_latinimegoogle.so (noticed varing sizes) but none of them have worked for me. I installed the apk out of CM10.2.1, and the gesture trail shows up but still no library it seems. Any idea what I might have missed? Renamed file as directed and put in in the system\lib folder.
Thanks in advance for any help you may have to offer.
Edit:
Got it. Restart the phone...I feel like I should have called tech support

Negative, didn't realize at first it was set to Samsung Keyboard...Help still needed.

I've attached the file in .rar format for you, extract the .so file from the archive using WinRAR and replace the existing file in System/Lib with this one.
You might get an error while trying to replace the file if AOSP Keyboard is selected as default input method, so switch to another keyboard before replacing the file (Swype Keyboard Trial is what I used).
Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately it additional didn't work. Any other ideas?

How I got gestures working on cm11
So, I'm uncertain if this is exactly what this thread is about, but it might help someone.
Some backstory:
I had cm11 for a long time with a working Android AOSP keyboard.
After trying cm12.1 for a while I went back to cm11 with a fresh install, and noticed my gestures not doing much, and causing the FC.
I did a lot of searching, but nothing seemed to fix my problem, including the suggestions from this thread.
Since I had a nandroid of my previous installation, I did some comparisons, and came across the file libjni_unbundled_latinimegoogle.so in the /system/lib.
Copying this to my new installation fixed gesture typing for me. So now I share my solution to whoever can use it.
I hope this helps someone!

In my situation it did, bat as mentioned I use cm11. Seems however the name is kind of related to the build of the apk. Apparently this was the same file as the one mentioned before, just with a different name.
You could try finding an older version of suitable gapps that provides a libjni_latinime.so and see if that one works...
I was able to enable gesture typing on a fresh install of CM13 without installing Gapps by extracting the file libjni_unbundled_latinimegoogle.so from the keyboard apk in openGapps for android6 (the "stock" version includes google keyboard). I placed the file in the /system/lib folder. Only difference is that I renamed that file to libjni_latinimegoogle.so . All was left was to soft reboot and enable gesture typing!
forgot to mention I set permission to -rw-r--r--

[Q] Tethering Disabled

I just upgraded from a S2 Skyrocket to a S5 Active running stock 4.4.2 on ATT, and realized that in the last couple years ATT must have caught onto the simple uninstall TetheringManager.apk trick to enable tethering. I have rooted with towelroot (easiest root I've ever done!) and I've cleaned off most of the ATT garbage from the phone, but haven't been able to figure out how to get tethering working. I read through this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2535141 but since it's for the S4 I assume the apk won't work for me.
Can anyone point me to a set of instructions that apply to the ATT S5 Active?
And before anyone tells me to pay ATT, I have a really old $10 unlimited data plan that would be lost if I ever added tethering, I would go back to the S2 before I would consider dropping my data plan.

Ok, what's a working procedure to install and use this? I've read through 10 pages of that thread and have no idea....
I tried installing the apk, won't overwright existing apk.
I tried uninstalling existing apk and installing this apk, says it cannot install. (I have a backup of existing which I then restored)
I tried deleting the installed apk from /system/app and copy and paste this apk in, tethering crashes when I try to launch it.
EDIT, the apk downloaded as a .zip which I renamed to .apk, might this have something to do with it?
EDIT 2, I missed the clearing of the cache and rebooting. After replacing the APK with the downloaded one, clearing the cache with TBU, and rebooting, it seems to be working great. Note I didn't have and odex file to delete....

Ok, what's a working procedure to install and use this? I've read through 10 pages of that thread and have no idea....
I tried installing the apk, won't overwright existing apk.
I tried uninstalling existing apk and installing this apk, says it cannot install. (I have a backup of existing which I then restored)

Just make sure you use the link in the post I recommended. There's no zip, only an apk that is 232KB large. Use a file explorer like the ES Explorer app. Go to /system/app, copy TetheringProvision.apk and TetheringProvision.odex to a backup location, then delete them, copy the downloaded apk to /system/app, set the permissions to read + write for the owner (root) and only read for the rest (using the "more options" setting if you use ES Explorer) and that's it, the Mobile Hotspot app should work.
I have tested and works correctly with a phone released using another operator. :good:
It's easy, take root the phone, use "ES explorer" or "rootexplorer", go to the folder "system / app" delete "TetheringProvision.apk" and "TetheringProvision.odex", copy the new "TetheringProvision.apk" and set permissions "rw-r--r--" reboot and go.
Wireless Tether running smoothly. :good:

confirmed working. thanks
I didn't realize there is a way to tether without a chance of at&t detecting and shutting down the plan. Is this it?

Reading this I almost thought I woke up in the middle of the night and made another post; exact same situation I found myself in!
I used Wanam Xposed to disable provisioning, is this functionally identical to using Wifi Tether Router to 'bypass' the tethering plan requirement? I'm using the native hotspot app atm.

You are missing the final r, it should be rw-r--r--.
In ES File Explorer it's Owner read write; Group read; Other read
I also cleared the cache after doing the file swap. I had my permissions wrong the first time as I left Execute in there, once I figured that out it's working great for me.
I'm on an S5 Active.

Whoops, it was a typo, I had the permissions rw--r--r--. The hotspot works now, but it doesn't show me the screen to configure my password and stuff like that.

When you click it on, you don't have the three dot menu right next to it? Are you using FoxFi or stock?
I'm using stock. It looks like this.

Hmm I'm sorry to say I don't have other ideas besides a full reset. Here is what mine looks like.
