I Just got my Xperia T and wanted to compare the image quality to my HTC One X I'm getting rid of (God awful phone by the way)
These pictures are in no way 'the best' the camera can do I'm sure and I hardly used a good subject... in fact it was just what was in the corner of my room
All pictures however were taken now (11:10pm ish) in a fairly dullish room so all had to use the flash feature.

Excellent shoot. Xperia T's camera definitely has a greater contrast.. which is the most noticeable thing that popped out to me. The shadows were darker, etc.

It also picked up the varnish shine effect that the cabinet has where the HTC one x made it look dull. So far I'm very impressed with the Xperia t,for once I'm using the stock keyboard as its actually very good. Normally I install swiftkey but not this time.
I have both phones aswell and SXT has the far better camera and video and video sound quality too and I like the fact that the videos arent so zoomed in like on the hox, htc really need to do something about that because it is a horrible feature.
I like my HOX but seriously Tegra 3 really lets it down, phone has a tendancy to be zippy fast one minute then snail slow and laggy the next and not to mention it overheats like crazy when playing games or on the internet for even three mins which my sxt doesn't
How fast does your xperia t take shots, i came from a gs3 that was lightning quick at taking pics. I get some amazing pics with the xperia t, but sometimes it just seems sluggish at focusing if at all. Would you mind sharing detailed camera settings for everyday use so we can get the best out of the Xperia Ts Camera?

I have the stock settings only got my phone yesterday. When I press the capture button it takes about 0.5 to 1 seconds for the picture to flash in the gallery icon in the bottom right.
I always have my camera in normal mode as opposed to auto scene mode because auto scene mode it is too slow to focus and I use touch focus instead of auto focus.

The scene selection seems to take a while. I leave mine in normal mode but let auto-focus do its thing and select a specific scene mode (landscape, sports mainly) when needed. I only use touch focus when I want to focus on a particular area of the shot I'm taking.

today my focus froze completely when trying to take a picture of some christmas lights, I had to exit the camera and go back into it before it focused and btw that time the lights went off. This is kinda the same issue i had with the xperia s but the s was worse. Please, please, please SONY just stop it. why cant the camera focus straight away like on the HOX or SGS3 for example.

Unfortunately Xperia T is not the leader in good quality pictures. I would say my T makes awful pictures!! I have it now for a few weeks and I am really really disappointed in photo quality by my new Xperia. I had Samsung Galaxy SII before but I didn't like it due to network signal problems so I sold it after a few weeks and I decided to go for Xperia T. S2 was making way better pictures than Xperia T does. I wanted to by S3 but I didn't like the week network signal in S2 and I have used Sony Ericsson for many years before so I picked Xperia T. I was very disappointed when I noticed after my first shot how noisy it was. It is hard to catch focus, many pictures are blurred. Making a shot in bright sun is fine. But as soon as You will get inside and use a lamp as a light sources even with LED light it will be hard to make a nice clear shot. I had SE Satio before and it was making much better pictures. I also compared shots in the same room and lighting with my friend's Galaxy S3 and Samsung was making much better pictures without that much noise. So If you are looking for a good camera with your smartphone Xperia T might not be the best call.

Yeah coming from a Nokia N8 I have to agree that the image quality is just not to the standard I've been used to. I got camera zoom fx app but even with uncompressed images @ 12.8mp there is far too much noise in low level lighting. There is a mod you can get that will probably give you a real uncompressed JPG but as far as taking a decent shot without any motion blur it's almost impossible..The Video capture on the other hand is good.
I may have to wait a bit before trying this mod out as need to root the phone. Personally I would prefer if Sony wouldn't handicap the camera quality as the images are re-sized for sharing online.. The phone can store 14gig plus 32 gig of expanded memory.
IMHO if you want good camera hardware in a phone go for the Nokia 808 or the 920.
Irrespective of operating system. If you want a good photo you need good hardware and I never needed to buy extra software with Symbian to get a good shot every time I used the camera on the N8.
I don't know why Sony made such a poor quality camera/pictures. I am not sure where the problem is - is it the hardware or software, but pictures out of Xperia T are barely usable. I can compare pictures to old but good Sony Ericsson C902. Compared to Galaxy S3 Samsung makes much better pictures. If camera would be better T would be the best phone. For a plus is that videos are quite decent.
And most of the tests show the opposite as well as many other users say the oppostite too.

Truth is, that the image stabiliser needs to be turned on, to make not blurry photos in low light conditions. Noise is normal on this kind of cameras. If another phone has no noise, then it's only post processing.
Btw. this camera is perfect scanner of documents, even in low light conditions. It proved to be very useful for me.

But the stabiliser is a digital stabiliser right ? Do you know how does it work for pictures ?
edit : by taking multiple picture and keeping the sharpest one a suppose
So the image stabilizer is most likely "off" with the auto setting ? Why they don't choose to keep it "on" if its better ?
I also have been surprised by how much chroma noise the pictures have.
So maybe Sony just made the choice to apply less chroma noise reduction than its competitor. (but having chroma noise at lowest iso setting feel weird for sure)

Just a prove that it's not possible to make photo without noise in low light conditions with this optics. ISO is not everything.

Not sure about the xperia t, but on my sgs3 when i turn on image stabilization all it really does is increase the iso therefore producing a faster shutter speed...which is what you want to prevent blur. The exif data of each photo shows this.

Hi all,
New to the Xperia T and, more importantly, new to XDA. This is my first personal smartphone!
I got the Sony as I wanted a smartphone, but I wanted one that takes good photos, as I cannot take my dSLR everywhere.

In the default app, can you change jpeg compression? it is reported to be very high
What app do people use?
Image compression - can you set the shutter button open a different app?

Why do some reviews show that you can change the ISO, whilst others report you cannot?
Is this option "lost" in an update, ie has Sony removed it?

Howdy! I've got this phone for 3 days now. One of the main reasons to choose this one, is the camera. It should give stunning pictures, right? Wrong.
I can't for the love of me get even one good picture. Each and every one is either out of focus, distorted in some way, or it looks like there's not enough light (even when the picture is taken outside).
I started out with the automatic mode. What I dislike there, is that it never chooses the max. resolution. Manual mode, I can't get it to make good pictures either; though that might be because of lack of expertise.
Is my device broken? Am I doing something wrong? Help would be appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I'm currently on the newest firmware. I'm running RomAur v3.2. I had the same problem on a different modified stock ROM of the latest firmware build.
I only know for good light condition, you set the ISO to as low as possible and 20mp manual and need a pair of steady hands. I still havent figure out low light condition, some ppl suggest twilight mode.
1. manual mode. the automode is bull****
2. fullsize. you can resize after the shooting^^
3. let the iso as low as possible. remember that the image becomes a little brighter than in the preview. use flash if its dark
i dont have any problems with the camera, even if taking pictures of moving obejcts in dark conditions. just stop shaking your hands and geht the iso lower^^

Yea iso to a lower value

This is with bad lighting (Sun was shining at the cam), a view from my window. Is this the quality I should expect from this phonecam?
Inside, it's never sharp. There simply seems to be too little light to make sharp pictures. The flash does nearly nothing. The low ISO setting makes it lag very much as well, reducing the screen fps to 3 or something like that. I guess it's difficult for the device to keep up.

Those do look better. Do I understand correctly that I should take a course in photography and buy a an app to get decent pictures out of this thing? I've heard about FV-5 before. Is it that much better than the stock camera app?
im not satisfied at all with z1 camera , am i missing something ??

there are two apps much better than FV-5
1) Pro Capture: More details. Sharper pictures. aiding grid to get great shots. (but you can't manage ISO level and the max resolution is 8MPX)
2) Camera Zoom FX: Faster focus. More MPX option (18MPX resolution is available)

Then my device is broken. I tested a few shots next to a Galaxy Note 3, and it made much (MUCH) better pictures than my Z1. Tried all kinds of settings, no way to make it right. So mine must be ****. I'm getting it exchanged because of a lazy pixel anyway, but I'm really disappointed in Sony here. I thought they made quality products. :x

Mmm, can you explain me better auto mode? Do you selected a scene? Do you select single focus point or multi point?
Metering? (Can you explain this)
HDR or image stabilizer?
Do you use the hardware button to take pictures or the software one? I noticed that using the hw one after you press focus and then more to shoot produce a little movement that can make your photo bad. Am I the only one that find the camera button too hard?

Got my Z1 today.
I have exactly the same problems as you have. Even my Galaxy Nexus with 5mp does better photos :crying:
Also tried some different camera settings without any success.
Don't know what to do now...

My advice: Contact the seller and have it exchanged. I think it's a hardware problem.

anyways, OP has "generating clicks" written all over it.
Nice shots! I especially like how well OIS works on the n5 when taking videos too, much better than the n4.

I think that issue is pretty common these days, you camera might even produce those with the very same conditions.

My N4 has it as well, I agree, but not to the extent as observed in those photos.

I am assuming that your friend bit**ed and moaned about the lack of manual shutter speed and aperture control, default camera app (awful), and in general lack of a manual mode (which is how most pros shoot- manually setting everything).
Disclaimer: I'm a photographer (not the 'I have a DSLR and use AUTO mode and press this thingy' photographer, the 'I have my own successful business' kind) and the lack of manual shutter & aperture is beyond frustrating to me. Sure there are (mostly worthless) apps that give you some control of ISO, WB, burst mode, etc., but without those vital exposure controls (shutter and aperture) to me all smartphone cameras will suck.
I know, I know. It's not a pro level slr... it's a phone...
Of course having stunning locations always helps.

While I agree with you that the default camera app is incredibly awful and lacks many controls, mobile phones are replacing point and shoot cameras, not DSLRs or micro 4/3. Also, most people use photos nowadays for stupid web shots/social/ready-made-filters etc and not for printing or cropping and zooming for the perfect frame.
I replaced my Cannon P&S since I had the HTC One X two years ago, but no mobile will ever replace my Fuji X-A1

I don't disagree with you on anything but this - most modern SLR pros I know (less than 100, but many more than 10) do NOT shoot all manual. Most may shoot A-priority or S-priority, or use P mode and wheel their way to the desired blend, but only landscape, product or portrait shooters really can practically go all manual, all the time - you need non-moving subjects and somewhat consistent lighting to rock all manual and get a decent return on your shots.
And let's be fair, manual shooting modes do not make better pictures: better photographers make better pictures.

I know this and agree with you entirely, but I do have an old Polaroid P&S that allows me to set the shutter speed (like from 1/30-1/200, but no aperture control) and that thing is 5+ years old now. But yeah, the need to own a P&S is mostly non-existent with how good smartphone cameras are getting now. It still wouldn't stop me from griping about the things I mentioned if someone gave me a smartphone to take photos with the expectation of delivering pro quality work though (OP was 'I gave my phone to my pro friend to see what he/she could do').

The only problem I have with P, A, and S priority modes is the reaction time of the camera to lighting conditions - especially outdoors. I particularly have an issue with P mode as most cameras seem to want a neutral/balanced shutter and aperture - like 1/60 @ f8 - whereas I may want 1/125 or faster @ f4.5-6.3 - and it gets worse outdoors (like wanting 1/160 @ f25 instead of 1/800 @ f8 etc) almost necessitating use of S mode if auto operation is desired. It also seems to take too long sometimes for the camera to read the amount of light and adjust the exposure (shutter speed in A mode or aperture in S mode) correctly. Shooting in manual mode for me is easier and better for me as I can read the light and pick a proper shutter, etc. based on conditions where I am shooting without having to worry about being occasionally slightly too bright (concern for a loss of detail being washed out) or too dark (where softness/pixelation comes into play).
But I suppose how you use your camera will vary on what you are taking pictures of. My gripe with the Nexus 5 is that with adequate lighting indoors and having the flash on auto the camera seems to always want to take pictures with the flash off at 1/10 or 1/20 @ f10 ISO ~400 or something like that, and that's just no good with really anything especially pictures of the kids. Why can't I at least just set the shutter? So many blurry pics... I thought there would be more emphasis on getting the camera experience better on a Nexus phone... the sad thing is that the hardware is actually really good for a phone but sadly the software side is woefully behind :crying:

I always love these posts,
I have been an on again off again professional photographer for over 10 years mostly in industrial photography.
Even once owned an online photography magazine with pros writing articles from around the world.
My first thought is that it never really has much to do with the camera, its the photographer that stands behind this.
The best example I can give you of this, is the gear snobs that say you can't use mirror-less cameras in the professional setting.
Just grab a pro photographer give them a Nikon V1 or a Olympus OM-D and let them go shooting for a day.
As far as not having P/S/A/M modes, it's a phone....
1 in 100 000 people will even know what that is and about a third of those will actually know how to use it.
If we want to talk camera geek for a moment.
Sensor size is 1/3.2″
Aperture is f2.4 (fixed Aperture)
Max iso is 100 - 800
What does this mean?
Low light shots will still be grainy (Tiny sensor doesn't collect enough light)
The Lens is equivalent to about 28mm which if you have a Canon Rebel or a Nikon DXXXX camera it works out to the 18mm on a kit lens.
So why no manual control?
Well with a fixed aperture of 2.4 what can you change?
Well if you know cameras there is something called the exposure triangle, all this means is aperture, shutter speed, iso have to line up just right for an image to be exposed correctly. In A (aperture priority) you only control aperture and iso, S (shutter priority)you only control shutter and iso, and M you control everything. If you can't change the aperture then you can't use these modes.
Any app that says it gives you control of these things are just simulated.

The blur in the background, how to get it on a phone.
First we have to look at two things the 28mm lens and the tiny sensor. The smaller the sensor does not help at all in this case and nether does the focal length. To get Bokeh with your phone you have to get really really close to your subject almost as if your taking a macro shot.
One more trick for you guys if your still reading this, the camera phone is not ideal for taking portraits.
The reason why is at 28mm you get barrel distortion that pulls the center of the image towards the viewer. You can give people longer than usual noses and get strangeness going on. If your going to take a portrait of a person, instead of taking a close up on the face back up a bit. It will help hide this distortion.

I have a sony xperia Z C6603 and I absolutely hate something about the phone. Before i take pictures it looks great (amazing even) as i take the photo the picture is perfect, then after a second it processes it so much i look more like an alien from outer space than a human being. Not only this but the files are also ridiculously small compare to all other phones. I've downloaded the FV-5 app and it's great, but my photos from my front camera stll lokks like horse s***. i do not want other setting configurations, because nothing fixes it... Has anybody made a fix for this via rooting or whatever? i've searched all over the internet after a solution , but can't seem to find one. One of you geniuses must have a solution, right? (have the 4.3 android version and 10.4.B.0.569 build number).
Not yet. People have tried.many things but.no luck so far. At least Sony finally updated the camera app which was the same since x1 was released

geez.... Yah... my photos did not get better at all, haha. If they could just change the format to JPG or whatever (know that is big files) that would be fantastic, but nooo.... (now referring to sony and not XDA-developers) Great phone, TERRIBLE photo software.

Yes, Sony's post processing is ****.
Unfortunately, there is no solution as of yet.

if you have extensive knowledge with camera settings you could try using manual mode and set everything yourself.

That does not help with the secondary camera, it's bad quality no matter what I do.
My girlfriend has a Iphone 5 which deinitely takes better pictures than mine, I think you all agree that this is unacceptable, we must stand together and crush the underpowered Iphone with the wrath of our mighty hardware and fixed software!

we can see it two ways
the camera hardware sucks and we can't do anything about it
or the camera software sucks and we have to wait for sony to update their binaries and libraries and other stuff. which we also cannot do anything about.
I agree...when I first looked at myself trough the front camera I thought if I brought a renovated phone with a broken camera...

I have installed AOKP 4.3 ROM on my Xperia Z. When I need to take a fast picture, I just use auto ISO/Exposure...
When I wanna get better picture in low light, I just use a little bit tweaking In low light, when I'm taking picture of some close object, I just put ISO on 100/200 (max), use flash and that's it! When I'm taking picture a little bit further (3/4 meters), I use 200/400 ISO, and use flash if I can (very big con of our device is bad flash). When I'm doing night portrait, just put ISO on 400 and turn on HDR, photos will look awsome believe me
Tonight I could upload some pictures from my Z, just to give you some clue.
P.S. When you're using front camera, turn on HDR you will get a much better photo quality

Did you turned off 'soft tan effect'' or something like this? It helps a bit on stock ROM (Honami camera app)
I'm using AOKP ROM and I have better front camera picture quality than my friend (Galaxy S4), I just turned on HDR

I just flashed the ROM after aloooooooot of work and I currently have the PAC-MAN ROM and the picture quality is amazing. It takes pictures in JPEG automaticallly and the files aren't that big! If anyone wants to do this I can deliver some links which actually unlocks bootloader, roots and flashes ROM, looked for the right downloads for ages.

Did you used touch to focus - then shot? and is it exynos or snapdragon?

On DSLR, I must shoot with shutter speed no less than 1/100. Some photos were 5s explosure on telephoto lens, so expect some bluriness.

I'm sorry dude, i hope you don't get this wrong, i just want to make sure its the camera and not your hands, i just checked most of this photos, and most of them are blurry, so either this environment is much darker then it looks or maybe you didn't get the camera update that some units just now are receiving?

The environment is super dark, I would say photo look like 3-4 stop brighter than the actual place. Here is the setting I must use on DSLR to get the shot if you care about it. SS 1/100 f/1.8 ISO 6400. I already download and update 1 patch upon receiving the unit which has 1.0GB in size.
So if it so dark, how would you compare the photos with other phones? are they decent, good, great? next time just a suggestion, take few non night mode/regular shots if prompted for auto night mode turn it off if possible, that shot should be great for reference. Here is night shot vs pro mode pair.
Compared to S7, I would say it is much better, but S7 is 2017 era phone, so I don't think it's a good competitor.
Even pro mode looks 1 stop brighter than actual place.

The scene optimizer sends you to night mode upon turning on, so it's the same as using the night mode anyway.

Yes but i prefer to see medium to low light shot without night mode and no scene optimizer
