[HELP] Call quality over VOIP and in general? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Need some help guys and girls with my Z1 and also my wife's (they have the same issue) to let us know if this is normal for these phones or not?
List of issues below which we both have with the call quality.
1. When using viber or skype over WIFI the volume is turned up to the max on my phone but I can barely hear anyone even in a very quiet room.
2. When outside in a fairly noisy environment (town for example) I cannot hear ANYTHING apart from a muffled muted sound.
3. With the volume turned up to the max we can hear an echo so to speak a split second later with what we have just said.
4. The other person on their phone says sometimes it's very clear but normally it sounds like you are on speakerphone and/or very far away from the ear piece.
I have played around with the call settings by turning off noise suppression, playing with the EQ and everything else I can think of but so far I have not been able to fix it.
NOT interested in rooting whatsoever as if I cannot find a solution I may have to look for a new phone.
P.S I love everything else about this phone, the build quality, the camera just want to be able to use it to make phone calls.

I have a similar issue where if i'm holding the phone between my ear and my shoulder ( no hands on the phone ) , the person on the other end of the call says the same thing you've mentioned in point 4

Before I go ahead and void my warranty...

I've had my AT&T banded N1 (with Rogers in Canada) for nearly 2 weeks now and I've been waiting to make sure everything works properly before I potentially give up my warranty by unlocking it. One thing that has been bugging me though is the call quality.
Everyone raves about how clear the call quality is on these things, but based on my phone I don't really agree. When no one is talking the line is dead silent (so silent that I almost think that the call has dropped), but when the other person begins to talk a light static or crackling background noise starts and once they finish talking it goes away and is completely silent again. If the static was there all the time I might not even notice it, but since it stops and starts during pauses in the conversation it really stands out. This happens on both the handset ear piece and with the headphones that came with the phone.
Has anyone else noticed this? If it's normal so be it, but if not then I might as well try and get it fixed before I do anything.
I don't have the at&t version but that does not sound normal.
Crackling is normally a sign of a speaker problem but I wouldn't think the headphones would also produce it.
seems i have the same issue...
i havent noticed any noise like this, but i will go test it and see if i have it too.
It's the speaker, for some reason the Nexus One comes with a slightly-too-loud speaker volume setting built in and you need to turn the incall volume down one notch from max. At least that solved my problem, hope this works for you!
have just called Google Tech Support and the guy suggested me to blow into the earphone couple of times and see if it helps
if not, do a hard reset
if not, call for warranty...
Since I get this noise in both the handset and ear phone speakers at all volumes I have to assume the problem is with my radio.
It's too much of a pain to get warranty work done outside of the US so I'm just going to learn to ignore it.

Callers can't hear me.

Hello!
I keep getting complaints from callers that they almost can't hear me, they do hear me but it's very soft.
I have all my volumes on max and even if I yell they say it's still to soft.
Anything I can do to fix this? It's really annoying, I can't make any calls atm because they just can't hear me. :<
Greetings,
I am as of recent having the same problem. My only work around has been using speakerphone or if you can believe this plugging in a regular set of stereo headphones (no mic. I lost the headphones that came with the phone) and speaking into the regular mic hole on the bottom of the phone. Then for whatever reason my levels go up radically and they can hear me. I have tried all the "service mode" temporary code tweaks without any luck. I have rebooted just in case I had f'd up any of the settings to put them back to default. Any ideas people?
Maybe it's ketchup.

Phone echo

Hey there, I have had my z3 compact about 3-4 weeks now and am loving it, however it was only recently that I have used it for a call or two. I have noticed a slight delay/ echo from my end (when i talk, i hear my voice a second later), any idea why/how to solve this?
p.s. I have also realised that that turning down the volume reduces the volume of the echo, figured i'd put that out there in case its related.
Many thanks!!!

I also get a muffled / echoed sound of the other party when on a call on the z3 compact and did realise that it reduces on lowering the volume. Was wondering if it was just me...
The Z3C sound get muffled because of its water proofing and the echo is probably from the other party phone being put on speaker, especial with iPhone which has the mic built near the speaker that can cause feedback.

Its mainly the muffled sound for me on higher volume, and the other party was neither on speaker nor it was an iPhone...
I think I may have solved the issue, but not 100% sure yet after only having made one call to test. But try this guys, go to 'settings' and then 'call', and deselect the 'speaker voice enhancement' option? I hear that there is a bug which causes the phone to echo when this is selected, but like i said not totally sure if it is fixed yet, but it seemed to have done the trick for me so far. Tell me how it goes!
solution for echo sound for other person on loudspeaker
I had the same problem till I solved the problem.
I've tried everything like downgrade to 4.4, changing microphone setting, repairing with sony pc companion. Nothing solved the problem so dont do that things.
Here is the solution.
Go to setting then call. Turn off microphone noise suspension and speaker enhance and slow talk.
Then restart your phone.after 5 minutes do the factory reset with delete everything option. I mean tick the option which delete your internal memory.
After that your phone is ok but dont chang any options in call setting. Don't turn off or on any setting in there like microphone noise or speaker enhance or slow talk.
Leave those options what it is.
Your phone is fine again

General Mobile 4G Microphone gain is too low!

I have this device I bought it 3 days ago. Not rooted everything is pure stock and Google. But mic gain is very bad. Callers can't even hear my sound. I have to put phone mic near my mouth. I even can't hear my voice on WhatsApp sound records. I googled about it but every solution goes me engineering mode which this device doesn't have! What can I do? This think goes me crazy!?!!!

Speaker too loud during calls

Hi!
I would like to know if you have the same problem as me. I'm running my Nexus 6 on Android 6.0 and when I perform a call everyone can hear the call by the upper loudspeaker, even setting it up to the minimum (it's too loud! I can't use it near my ear.. it must be some centimeters away).
I can notice that when I use it in my ear it is as loud as if it weren't in my ear (proximity sensor off). It's like it doesn't change speaker mode (But when I switch it I can hear a click, so it must be performing it)
Do you know if the phone is hardware-damaged or it may be a software bug?
Thank you
