WARNING: If you used Titanium Backup and want to go to 4.3, read this - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S 4 General

EDIT: Per gharlane00's post below on 11/06/13, TiBu has apparently fixed this issue with a new release.
I found this out the hard way, but TiBu is broken on S4's that go to 4.3. Here's their warning:
http://www.titaniumtrack.com/latest-news/attention-samsung-s4-users.html
If you restore any apps with it, you'll get a security warning when running it, if it runs at all. I've been slowly restoring everything one app/setting at a time. Frustrating to say the least when I paid for TiBu to do it for me.
On this subject, does anyone know if just restoring the "data" from TWRP will just intall apps/settings from MF9 to MJA? I'd guess it's not a good idea, but curious if anyone knew for sure.

It borked my phone terribly. Got tired of uninstalling/reinstalling each app due to force closes. I then decided to wipe my phone and then it soft bricked.. been that way for 2 days. Avoid TiBackup like the plague until they resolve their issues.

Yep, happened to me to. To fix the issue, go back into stock recovery and do a factory reset. Or just forgot about Samsung's crappy update and flash an AOSP rom like I did.

I saw some were having trouble with TB so before I upgraded I backed everything up with TB, then I did a factory reset in recovery. I then odined the mf9 full tar file to bring me to completely stock. I then ran cf autoroot on the stock mf9. Loaded up TB and restored everything I wanted restored with TB. This left me with a stock rooted mf9 with all the apps and data restored. I then installed the MJA update using the stock recovery. This way I didn't have to restore my apps after the MJA update since I heard TB was not working right after the update. Hopefully this helps some people that don't want to lose their game progress or app data.

I've never been a fan of tb kinda glad now I've been using mybackup pro and everything went smooth for me

Sorry, a little confused by your answer. Are you saying after doing a stock recovery factory reset, TB would restore the apps for you? If not, what did you use to recover your apps (if anything worked for you at all)?

Sorry, I should've been clearer. Doing a factory reset allowed me to have a usable phone again. It didn't fix the problem of not being able to use TB.

The reason for this is selinux.
I'll post a flashable boot.img with the danged thing disabled tomorrow.

Can you give us more info on it? I can't find it in App Manager, etc. Thanks.

selinux is part of Linux. It wasn't present in earlier versions of Android. You won't find it in app manager because it's not an app.

I wasn't sure either... googled it. SELinux = Security-Enhanced Linux.
What caught my eye was that it was started by none other than the NSA back in 2000. You know, because the NSA is so concerned about making sure prying eyes can't get to your stuff.
I know it's open source and all, but still, makes ya think...

There is an app in the play store called TB restore fixer, it's supposed to solve the problem of restoring with TB on a 4.3 phone. It was written for the Note 3 but may work for us too.

Never mind, the TB Restore Fixer did work. You still get a notification in the status bar but the application does not force close and you can continue to use it. I only got one notice. So after getting one notice, I cleared it and then went back into the app and didn't get a second notice. So that is better than nothing
---------- Post added at 03:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:27 PM ----------
One last update, so I force closed the app I restored, opened it up again and I did get the security warning again in the notification. But it is a small price to pay if you have an important app that you have valuable data that needs to be restored now.

TB Fixer worked for me.

Restored my phone log and old messages without a problem. Haven't been able to restore data on the few apps I tried.
Edit: I just tried TB Restore Fixer from the play store. I manually installed the app and used Fixer. It hung on the first attempt but had already applied the fix. After a reboot, the second app worked great.

Here's what i did and i kept everything. I was currently on a stock rooted mf9 rom, i downloaded the 1click odin stock mf9 Tar and flashed that to unroot myself and get rid of my custom recovery. This way, i didnt need a factory reset and all my apps and data were still there. Then i just downloaded the ota MJA and flashed that through the stock recovery thus getting me to MJA with everything working and my apps and data on there too. After that, i got some force closes cause NOVA u have to be rooted to use nova launcher. I then odin the CF-Auto root file and downloaded su from market and updated it. after that everything worked fine. for now im not going to risk getting any custom recoveries. So im just on stock rooted MJA for now and everything works good. If you guys would like me to post the links to the files i used. just quote me x).

Bionic 5.5.1_84_DBN-55 Auto_DeOdexer

For those of you that do not want to DeOdex their phone manually, here's a script I created to do it for you. I've created this same script before for the Droid X, and it's quite simple. Here's what you need.
1) Your phone must be Rooted.
2) You must install Bionic_Bootstrapper.
Below you can find these items.
COMPLETE GUIDE TO ROOT AND BOOTSTRAP
Once you have that.... download my DeOdexer and put it on your sdcard.
Bionic_AutoDeOdexer
MIRROR
Reboot into recovery. BACKUP YOUR PHONE!!!!
Once that completes, then go to install from zip. Choose file from zip... find the Bionic_DeOdexer zip file... and run it.
There is a script at the beginning that checks the build.prop file and makes sure you have the correct build. You must have 5.5.1_84_DBN-55. If you do not, I hope it fails.
Reboot.... and all should be good. Now that you are DeOdexed.... have fun theming!
As you should know, do this at your own risk. Yes, I've tested this on my phone and had no issue. This doesn't mean you won't experience a problem. I'm not responsible for what happens to your phone.
ENJOY!!!
Worked great. Saved me a lot of time from manually deodexing.

Have you removed or touched any of the system/app/ 's ?
I'm running the rooted stock rom. I haven't removed any programs or modified/renamed anything in /system/apps, however, I did freeze some of the bloat using TB. Do I need to defrost the apps first before running this script, or does it matter?

If you modified any of the APKs, to include freezing them, I cannot guarantee it will work. Best thing is to be completely stock and rooted. At least that's the way I did this script.
Thanks for the answer! TB has a batch defrost, so if I decide to go ahead & run this script, I'll defrost everything first.
I did mine with frozen apps and it seems to be working well. Was able to install the 1% mod and use a custom battery icon too.

Good to know. I do know that depending on how the person downloads some packages, they may get corrupted during download. If it fails one time... try again. If it continues to fail, re-download and try again.

Kind of a goofy question, but is there any reason that deodexing the stock (rooted) rom would worsen data loss issues?
The reason I ask is that I reverted to stock yesterday after experiencing substantial data problems with UNLEASH3D 1.5. Ran well for the entire day and this morning. Then, a couple hours ago, I ran this script and have had nothing but issues since, with both WiFi and cellular data dying, and not coming back without a reboot. Reverted to stock again, and all is normal.
Any ideas?

I have these same issues on stock, on .892 and on any roms - I really think it is just the phone :/ - there is a known bug on the bug list about data connectivity issues.
Btw the .892 radio is complete crap.... at least on my phone it is...
Market Apps
After running this script, I noted that my normal list of around 60 or so market apps is now showing only around 13 apps. Also, the market app asked me for authorization when I started it up. So, I don't know if this script, or maybe an automatic update to the market app has caused my missing downloaded apps.
They are still on the phone, and still backed up with TB, but they are not shown in the market My Apps page.
Any thoughts or solutions?

Go to applications and clear the data for the market app. It sounds like you have a permissions problem and hopefully that should fix it.

How about just restoring your apps next time.
When you restore your settings and data, you are reloading your problems back in to the device.
If that doesn't work. Just restore one app at a time until you find the culprit.

boot looping when I update with Viperboy 1.1.0

I am rooted on a Sprint One and had stock HTC. Then downloaded the Viperrom 1.0.4 and had no trouble get it on, did not loose any of my settings or folders. Now when I download and try to run the viper 1.1.0 zip, it does the install and starts up shows my walpaper and icons appropriately, then crashes and constant reboots to the same point. Able to get on to recovery and reinstall the back up i had made with no rpoblems.
What do I need to do? If I wipe, what do i wipe? Have TWRP.
Will I loose all my settings and data?
Please help
Under advanced wipe select the first 4(dalvik,cache,system,data).
Then reflash the Rom.
You will lose settings.
Thanks, will try that in the morning.
Is there anyway we can save settings and restore them after upgrades?

I did the same thing as you. Mine got caught in a bootloop, I couldn't get the damn thing to force restart either. The bottom home & back key just kept flashing no matter how long I held it. I had to wait forever for the battery to die. I think something might be wrong with the restart fail safe HTC built in. So I relocked it, flashed back to stock, go to sprint store of course it reboots perfect every time. The people at the store are morons I hate going there. The guy says to me you just hold it down and the restart menu will come up. I'm like if the phone is frozen that doesn't work. None the less I don't expect them to replace something that is working. So I re-unlocked, cleared everything and installed latest build fresh works great haven't had any issue. I didn't back up either so I had to re set everything up which takes forever. I'm not a fan of restoring backups anyway as it can cause issues. I will be doing a nandroid next time and be more careful with dirty flashing. I always dirty flashed on MeanBean on my LTE without issues and Mike made it very clear when dirty update was not advised. In my opinion they shouldn't release a major update that will bootloop a phone over goo manger. It's still my fault but I didn't think twice about it when I tried to update viper. It still pisses me off that I have to fight with it to get the phone to reboot, the entire point of a fail safe is incase something goes wrong. It's the first time I have ever bootlooped a phone.

Thanks all, I am just where I was. so many opinions and would like to have a concensus.
It won't wipe internal unless you specifically check it in advanced. Never wipe internal, but davlic, cache, data and system are fine and constitutes a full wipe..you should always wipe that way when trying different roms or going to a new base. Or use a superwipe script to make things easier.

thanks, yes I ve downloaded it and i'm gonna try to push it.
Do you know how to find your serial number when you can't boot the phone except in the bootloader? is there a remote command?
People need a stock rom flashable. Including myself. Anyone?

I'm uploading one right now, but I'm on a painfully slow connection at the moment, so it'll take more than five hours to finish. I'll update this thread after it finishes.

Question about Titanium Back and TWRP

So, there is a feature in TB that enables you to make an update.zip of your backups, and previously (at least on KK) we were able to flash that update.zip and restore the backups while in recovery....
is there a way to do so with Lollipop....I have looked and dug around for this periodically and haven't found anything.....does anyone know of any solution other than restoring after boot?

Yes. Although it can be a rather LARGE zip. I've not always had best luck w it. Its under batch actions I think. But if you just wanna restore a few apps with their data (tibu doesn't give you a choices, all apps all data). Use app Zipme

The app (app2zip) fails. Unless you sign it.
Matter of fact, no lie, I just flashed using a zipme 5 min ago. To transfer a couple apps to tablet.

i'll try Zipme....Tibu's batch action zip doesn't flash for me....so we'll see if zipme works
zipme works MOST of the time. I have found that apps with license checks don't work, though. I think TiBU straightens out the market link or something.
I have never, ever, ever, had the TiBU update zip work. And mr. who-t-f-needs-TiBU simms22 has it work flawlessly the first time he uses it, lol.
Well the tibu route require zipsigner I believe. No sign no flash.

lol, i actually only saw thus feature about 2 months ago, but ive been using tibu since 2009. zipme ive never tried, but i know a few people who enjoy using it. btw, the first time i tried it on tibu, i messed up as it didnt save any apps but one. second time i figured out what i was doing wrong.

I like zipme to install TiBU and stickmount from the get go when flashing a new ROM.

Can't recall last time I used tibu. As far a a licence check, if you bought it, then you should pass. See no reason why not. Now every time you do a full wipe it changes your android I'd, but once you log into Google on startup you should be OK. There are 2 update.zips on tibu. One is just tibu app and list of apps to restore. Either way. I don't use it. Zipme can bkup your accounts, data, everything or anything. I personally think a tibu update has issues if it flashes bc of size, partitions, placing all that data at the same time your optimizing. Anyway to each his own. You like it use it. [emoji41]

Example: Zipme has never worked for me when trying to restore Poweramp Pro. I think it also fails when restoring Root Explorer pro, iirc.
The issue with zipme for everything is that you cannot adjust it for things like TE vs layers. For general backup, I find TiBU the least effort... Back everything up with one click, then restore what you want with check boxes.

I was referring to flashing. You nailed it in your last post.. Flash tibu, onandroid , 3C, or whatever you chose. Really not necessary to flash all or most of your apps on initial load. About to update this deb, gonna try poweramp. Only one that has was hangouts??? Forced closed. It was a modded version though.

I've always had to boot into the rom, then back to recovery and flash the update.zip.

invalid signature....which sounds like there may be a solution to that mentioned already

and yes, this has always been somewhat standard procedure for this....you have to boot in, do the initial account setup and then flash the zip

the error was failed to sysMap file
it happened with the ZipMe as well....
i really liked using the update.zip but apparently it just doesn't work anymore...it could be because of the size tho...
