Does your Nexus 5 screen have bad viewing angles like mine? (Pictures inside) - Nexus 5 General

My Nexus 5 seems to have poor viewing angles compared to my HTC One X. Head on the screen looks great, but at a slight angle colors get a bit washed out, and at a larger angle the display basically turns dark to light grey when it should be black. I took several comparison pictures of my Nexus 5 and One X below. Both showing the notification screen. The display was set to a comparable brightness.
Anyone else able to compare their screen to another high end device? How are your viewing angles?

Lol, I will receive it tomorrow, I hope It doesn't looks like that. It looks like a cheap chinese phone screen...

It looks like they didn't use an A/TW polarizer on the nexus 5. Same as the nexus 4 and 2012 nexus 7. Its a shame since the nexus 7 2013 does in fact have an A/TW polarizer so doesn't glow off angle especially diagonally like the others do. I personally would have been fine if they just used the exact type of panel from the nexus 7 2013. Same ppi and everything just smaller.
Maybe its a panel lottery? I hope this one is just defective.
For those who don't know what the A/TW polarizer is, it reduces the off angle diagonal glows on IPS panels.
Both h-ips panels, one with a/tw, one without.
The One X by the way actually doesn't use IPS. It uses s-lcd2 which is actually a vertical alignment panel similar to S-PVA.

Very disappointed with the display. God dammit lg. The nexus 7 2013 display is amazing.

All of the reviews have been very positive on the display. Perhaps this is just a defective one as I haven't seen any other reports of issues.

Plus, I really never understood the viewing angle bragging by monitor PC industries. I remember Apple having a whole page in the iMac specs saying that I could view it at 178°. I bought an iMac, and trust me, I never had to watch it at 178° (or 89° on the left/right). In fact, I have the screen standing on my table and my chair is always at the same position...
On the phones it's kind of the same. Plus, they say that the N5 display it's the best one ever seen.
IMAO, the viewing angle can go to hell.

On mine it only happens if tilted on a corner. If tilted back and forth in portrait or landscape the black levels don't wash out.

Yeah, my N5 does have the poor angles as in these pics. In fact I am disappointed with the screen. I think its worse than the n4.

My GFs N4 is just as bad. My 2013 N7 has a much better screen than both.

Maybe you should go back on a Nokia6210...
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

Mine is really bad if it's over half brightness, similar to OP, but below half it looks fine like my N4. I've noticed that 1/3 brightness on my N5 is about equal to half brightness on my N4, so it may just be due to a naturally brighter display.

Try a screen trainer (or whatever they're called) to see if it's stuck pixels before you return it. But yeah, I totally understand. I can't stand them once I've spotted them; it looks like you got a few of them too.

This isn't going in a dark room and turning up the brightness to look for light bleed; dead pixels really are an annoyance, especially when you've got four or five.
Dead pixels drive me crazy... I've always been anal about my screens. I would still try a screen fix app though before I would exchange.

I've counted five problem pixels on mine. You can only notice it on a black screen. They have a very tiny whiteness to them. I think I can live with it though.

What can be seen cannot be unseen
I had mine delivered about 2 hours ago and right up until now I haven't noticed anything.
After seeing this thread I thought I'd check and whilst I only have one stuck pixel (white colour) and it's not in a particularly noticeable location, it's all I can see!
I guess I'll RMA it and I'm glad I can wait until the new one gets to me before sending this one away. Especially after the 3 week wait for it.
I was nervous this would happen with mine but my screen is pretty much fine. Had a little bit of the screen lift but I loosened all the screws and then tightened them and now it seems fine.

2 questions.
a) Are there 7 people using your phone at any one time where the 1st and the 7th person will be looking at the phone from that angle?
b) If a) is no, do you use your phone alone, at that angle. If so, might I ask what for?
Do you want to have a phone with wide viewing angles, on a 4.7 inch screen, just to say you have it? Or do you intentionally and typically hold your phone at that angle whenever you're showing your friends/family something on your phone?
Viewing angles bother me a little. When I let someone see my phone and besides them it looks "milky" at some angles

I'm with poison on this one do u really hold your phone at an angle for regular usage? I use my to watch videos at work with 4 people and haven't had a problem with the viewing angle. Had mine since Thanksgiving and its the best screen by far I've had. That's saying a lot to. I know u aren't comparing it to this but my I can't even use my 2 phones with super amoled now cause the colors look fake to me.

Mine is fine (great for an LCD) from all angles.. I don't really see why people make such a fuss over this. The screen only sacrifices a little bit of brightness at an extreme angle, but it's really not much of an issue.
A great feature that saves ur money from privacy film
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Yes there are people who look at their phone from that angle, just like there are people who view their screens under a magnifying glass and don't want to see pixels so need the screen to be 1 PPI over all the other phones.
dafuqq, you guys don't hold your phones at weird angles just to show off your awesome viewing angles like me??
Seriously though, there is something special about screens with perfect viewing angles imo (like the HOX). They are just simply stunningly flawless, no matter how you look at them. What's the reason for zerogap anyway when you can't look at the screen from an angle and see the text floating ontop?

Do you mean that you don't get the same distortion as in the image? Curious if there might be different panels.
I have a similar problem. It seems like every time I put my phone face down on a table I can only see a small amount of light on the sides. Also the brightness needs to be set pretty high to see it... weird.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
The viewing angle is fine.
If you have to look at your phone from that angle, you are looking it wrong™
This type of screen doesn't have the best viewing angle. Who cares? It is a phone and the other qualities of a zero gap ISP, lcd more than make up for it. Why would viewing angles be a major priority for any company designing a phone?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
Yeah the side viewing angles are much worse on the N4 than they were on my Galaxy Nexus. But as other have said, who cares? If I want to see what is on my phone's screen I will look directly at it.
I have no problems with the viewing angles. I think they're quite good. They're not the best out there but they're definitely above average.
The viewing angles do suck, if my phone is on the table and it lights up from a notification i have to pick the phone up to read it (not a big deal but annoying). or if i am trying to show a funny ass video from YouTube everyone has to gather around tightly just to see it clearly. I love the screen but the angles could be better.
Sent from my Nexus 4
What are you guys smoking? This phone has great viewing angles. It's bad when colors completely shift from an angle... which my phone doesn't do at all. In fact, most of the time I have to have my phone at min brightness at night. I get eye strain with this thing even on auto brightness at night. It's night and day better than the galaxy nexus. Even with melange setting with Trinity Kernel, the gnex had much worse viewing angles for me... almost a total shift to blue, and the brightness is night and day! I would be more worried about yellow spots and light bleed with this type of screen than the viewing angles.
Coming from a One X, you'll notice how bad the viewing angles are.
Coming from any other phone, you won't notice because it's what you're used to.
As for viewing your phone at an angle, I often have the phone on my desk and view it without picking it up. I'm one of the few who have been spoilt by the One X, so I certainly notice the bad viewing angles a lot.
Having said that, apart from the screen and the camera, the N4 kicks arse over the One X.
This thread shows how people cry about anything.
Besides, at anything more than absolute min brightness, I can read this whole thread perfectly fine at 170 or so degree. the ONLY thing is you get a metallic-reflection. But everything is crisp and bright.
off topic
can anyone see the capacitive sensors when the screen is off? I'm bringing it up because I can only achieve this at extreme angles when viewed in direct light.

gonna nit pick here just for fun:
looks like the "rubbery" looking outer border is a bit thicker on the left side than the right side. Could just be my eyes though.
that "rubbery" looking material looks super nice though!
another nitpick:
the volume buttons curve inwards on the top and bottom, the power button does not. personally, i prefer the non curved style of the power button as you pictured it.
truly great job though!
if you make it, ill buy it
Same design Almost looks like n4.. nothing new for me .. just so excited to see 4.4

Um. I don't know if you're just trolling and people are going along with it but that's exactly what the N4 looks like.
I don't know why we need a render anyways when we have the actual pictures of the device.
Is that large inlaid square on the far left a much more respectable speaker?
To be honest that looks just like an N4, even the curves at the top and bottom resemble a N4 more than the leaked pictures of the N5. And even the bezel looks like an N4
Conclusion this is a render of an N4

What about the back? The front is a screen, thats a given, but the back is the main place which gives the phone its design.

Yes, our poor eyes have been hurt by these over saturated amoled [email protected] for ages, it's time for a change. We need accurate colours on our screen. Apple devices are the best in terms of colour accuracy and it's good see android devices catching up. Actually, HTC One is regarded as having the best overall screen if you read Anandtech's review.

Like I suspected, contrast is worse than on the N4. To be honest, I'd trade some color accuracy for better contrast and/or better viewing angles. Especially on a mobile device where color accuracy is not critical.

Agreed, it's a massive improvement on the Nexus 4. Here's my measurement report using my iDisplay3 colorimeter & Chromapure
'Pre-Cal' = Nexus 4 (stock)
'Post-Cal' = Nexus 5 (stock)
Calibration report
very impressive, and is very similar to the one tested above. I could tweak the green down a bit - and dE2000 number (a standard measure of the error) over 3.0 needs to be tweaked.
The Nexus 4 was one of the poorest displays ever produced last year. Man that was horrible. Staring at the Nexus 5's screen is pretty noticeable difference.

Here's another review of the Nexus 5, look at the color comparison charts. You can add phones to the chart and check out their ratings, color accuracy compared to target colors, etc. I'm definitely going to look at this later tonight.
Also, I was just in the mall and a kiosk had a Nexus 5 on display. Naturally, I immediately gravitated to it and compared it to my Galaxy S4 Active. I set both phones on max brightness, and set my GS4A's screen mode to 'Movie', supposedly the most accurate and least saturated mode. The color accuracy of the Nexus 5 is better than my GS4A by a small but noticeable amount, but the whites seemed (by comparison) slightly more yellow and warmer. Is that what's known as a more natural white? My GS4A's whites tend to be colder and slightly more bluish by comparison.
I'm coming from a Galaxy Nexus which had such a grainy screen that it felt like I was looking at a newspaper almost. Whites were yellow & blacks were purple sometimes. That was a truly hideous screen. The Nexus 5 screen blows my mind in comparison(obviously). People say it's washed out, but I kind of like it when compared to the PLS display on my Note 10.1 which I actually really like as well.

Software can fix color accuracy but it can't fix viewing angles.
The display is decent but I would have actually preferred a shrunken version of the screen on the nexus 7 2013. It has much better contrast and MUCH better view angles. I wouldn't have minded if the nexus 5 was 323 ppi if it had those characteristics. You can't see the pixels on the nexus 7 anyway.

I agree. I wish they had gone with an IPS panel with an A/TW polarizer like the nexus 7 2013 has.
A/TW IPS vs regular IPS
Maybe it's just me but I really can't tell the difference between the screens aside the fact that the nexus 5 has better whites
I have used AMOLEDS and I actually returned to a note 2 cos the 3 was too expensive and I don't like the S4. All the screen talk made me buy a nexus 5 but honestly, I regret it.
I have kitkat features installed on my note 2...compare screens, aside the yellowish tint with amoleds, i really dont know what the fuss is about. Are your eyes that sensitive or mine isn;t just good ?
I'm still waiting for the colour comparison of this YouTuber. www.youtube.com/user/TheAngelofmusic1989
Her videos are incredibly detailed, no joke it goes for an hour. She made some good screen colour comparison for the s4 and HTC one I think.

lets discard the idea that the name is related to size.
Also, I would say that our current Nexus 5 is a very 2014 device since released very late on 2013 (the first nexus 7 was release on July 2012 and 2nd, July 2013).
NO thanks, I do not like curved phones.

Agreed I'd rather have a flat phone than curved but enough people do it such as apple it will be caught on like how people adapted to windows 8

Curved? No thanks.
Also not a fan of Windows 8 GUI and navigation style, and still use Windows 7 because it does what I need it to.
Go figure.
What would I want in a Nexus 6/Nexus 5 gen. 2? New high-end CPU/GPU, more RAM I suppose, higher MP camera. You know, that sort of thing. Ooh, root and SU option on stock Android? :highfive:

Im guessing this: 1440P display, 64 bit cpu (not sure exactly), 3gb ram, 13mp camera with ois, android 5.0 or 4.5 w/art as stock & 64 bit support, usb 3.0 (really hope this is in).
Oh, and broken SU...
Nexus devices are already kind of a niche product, it would be stupid to make it either curved or any larger than 5 inches, both of those categories are in the niche categories themselves.
Looks cool but unstable on a table. Needs to be curved the other way IMHO

don't forget that the nexus 4 was 4.7 inches. they could use the nexus 5 name and keep increasing the size in different, smaller, increments.

For me 5" inch is the perfect screen size, both in the hand and pocket.
Waiting to get any curved phone into my hand already before I could tell I like it or not ^^

there are certain things like music controls and torch controls and such that i need access to with one hand. but anytime i am actually zero'd in on my smartphone, i am using both hands, so i tend to prefer the bigger screens. i haven't quite figured out what my limit is on screen size

I agree with you mate forget about the curved screen and concentrate on the rest of the specs like memory capacity for instance 32/64gb built in 3 or 4gb ram better CPU /GPU

Does no one remember that the nexus S was curved. Shape wise, it was nice to hold and pocket. The only thing was the earpiece could be a little uncomfortable as the edge pressed against your ear more, but that is solvable. Of course, the screen was flat and only the body curved.
Some advantages are: placing it on tables etc mean little chance of scoring or scratching the screen; also rear facing speakers are either up face down, or not in contact with the surface face up.
PS the issue with the nexus s was Samsung's cheap, plastic build quality and feel. But the shape was good

Curved phone worked well on the lg flex. T-Mobile showed me the flex he had it in his pocked as its not on sale until next week. The phone is huge! But because of the curve and it really wasn't burdensome. I think from here on out curved phones should be a must for phablets

No curved phone please. Flexible is another thing but for stiff curved I cannot think any preferable reason.
I will be so upset if the make it curved.
