Disappointment list - Nexus 5 General

I got Nexus 5 today, played with it for sometime and here what I noticed I don't like about it.
I also have Galaxy S4 GE and used S3, S2 before. Never used Nexus phones before.
1. It doesn't come with headphones. oh cmon, how expensive can the cost be to not include them into a package ???
2. IPS display is a very big disappointment. The colors are washed out. Whites are too bright.
Galaxy S4 GE's display is much more better at color accuracy if I compare it to a professional IPS displays from NEC.
3. Screen size is actually smaller due to a presence of google buttons. Galaxy S4 has a bigger usefull surface, because it uses mechanical buttons.
Everything else is cool. KitKat 4.4 is awesome.

My thoughts exactly.

Lol
Why do people care about the ****ty ear buds that come with these phones ?
Sent from my SPH-L720 using xda app-developers app

1) it's a $350 phone. If you want, ask google to throw one in if you pay $650.
2) that's how a phone screen is supposed to lppl. You're used to the constant doctoring and over saturation. Which isn't a good representation of what it really is.
3) those mechanical buttons still take up space? It's not that hard to enter full screen mode and they're gone. not to mention you're in the development community where you can easily remove the nav bar completely.

I used them a lot to have a phone conversation.
As for music, I don't really listen it on a mobile device since the quality of its DAC is extremely inferior to studio devices.

1. Seriously, they cost like $10 on amazon. And it's soo much hassle to order them separately.
2. Just get a professional IPS monitor and compare colors of Galaxy S4 and Nexus 5 screens. You will see that Nexus 5 is off by a lot.
3. The height of Galaxy S4 and Nexus 5 is the same. Not all applications support a full screen mode yet, for example whatsapp or gallery.

I'd prefer if it was hidden inside the galaxy 4 forums so I'd never have to see it. Thanks for wasting 4 seconds of my day.

If the screen is truly washed out, you'll be able to tell by looking at this website:
http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/white.php
I use this test in particular, and that website in general to test all of my displays.
Black level is here:

I hate the GS4 fake over the top colors.
For the record I've owned the HTC ONE, GS4, and Iphone 5. The nexus screen is up there with iphone 5 and Htc one.
I still feel like i wasted money on gs4. Only great thing was the camera.

Shocked by (lack of) screen quality

I own a Galaxy S4 right now, it's the first non-Nexus I've owned and am a long standing Nexus fan (I have the 7 too) and recently picked up the Nexus 4 as a replacement phone for my wives damaged HTC One S and am really disappointed in the screen on the N4...
The screen looks completely washed out! I did some searches and found that the only way to get more vibrant colors is to root and adjust using another app which is a poor solution. Is this really the only thing that can be done?

Stock 4.3 has better calibrations than 4.2. But if you wanna change LCD calibrations, you need custom kernels (yes after rooting) like faux, ak, Franco etc and then use an app like trickster mod or faux control etc.. Also s4 is amoled so it'll have more vibrant colors..but with custom kernels you can do a lot to the screen

not only that, but the S4 screen is a tad over saturated compared to the slightly more natural looking N4. take a look into some of the threads comparing the Super AMOLED vs IPS screens.
I don't seem to be having scree N quality issues. B ut I can only compare my n 4 to the N7 or an iPhone 4s...L

Speaking objectively as an owner of both phones I definitely can. Same with HTC One S->Nexus 4, One S is noticeable more vibrant with darker tones and richer colors.
I guess it just is what it is for now. Thanks everyone for the quick responses!
You were shocked????
I do agree the stock n4 does not have the best color calibration. This is a programing issue and not a screen quality issue.
I'm sorry but I would choose a IPS display over a AMOLED display any day!

Bull****. The only thing i can think of is Whatsapp displaying a popup before initial setup saying they don't support custom roms/root. Rooting shouldn't cause ANY problems if you just root, install Faux/Franco kernel (and their app) and apply gamma settings. If you're paranoid, i think you can set root to be denied for anything else apart from those apps you need to calibrate the gamma and stuff. Oh well.

Notification LED question...

Hey guys, believe it or not, the notification LED on phones is a deal breaker one way or the other for me. I rely on it a lot and I really like when they are large enough and bright enough. It was the main reason why I couldn't stick with the HTC One since it had a tiny one and couldn't change colors.
Anyhow, how is it on the Note 3? I have heard some worrying comments about how it's smaller than other Samsung phones. I had the S4 before and that one was fine to me. Is it the same size as the S4's? Smaller, larger?
Can someone post a pic of theirs on or maybe a video? This might be the deciding factor for me believe it or not lol.
Thanks!

It's the same as the S4 and changes colors as well. I know with the Tapatalk app you can cycle through all kinds of colors with it. It's not turbo bright like a camera flash, but you can most definitely notice it flashing if it's on a desk beside you or even across the room.

Cons

Considiring the price we can call the Nexus 5 as a huge fail. Nexus 4 is practical the same only the cpu is better and maybe built quality
My opinion dont buy it and get the g2!
Gotta admit, the speakers blow, pop and distort after volume of 70%.
My viewing angle is pretty decent I say when compared to my S4.
Color is ok. I miss my saturated color from S4.
Very fast!!!!
Just a question, for the menu button, how do i end all? I don't like to swipe one by one off the screen...

Take 4.4 and Samsung OS tweaks out, what do you like about Nexus 5 over S4 specifically ?
Coming from s4 the n5 is much better in the hand feels more durable. Screen is washed out a bit but maybe its more accurate. My cons so far Is the speaker is very poor even for £339 and I think the battery don't last very long compared to my previous device s4. So if lg had fitted a better speaker and bigger battery I'd of give this phone 9/10 as every phone has an improvement to be made. But it is how it is so I'd give it a 7/10

Sell me on the S5....

Hey guys, I got the M8 last Thursday but am not totally convinced that it is the phone for me yet. I have some gripes with it, but overall I like the phone. First I have two questions about the S5, and then I will post the gripes that I have with the M8 that I posted in the M8 forum. After that, let me know what you think. Here are my two questions about the S5:
1. Will the Touchwiz lag from the S4 be gone? I was always a Samsung phone guy, but I just couldn't deal with the lag on the S4. It drove me absolutely nuts. I'm hearing some rumblings that the new UI on the S5 is free of lag? Has anybody played with the phone yet and can chime in on this?
2. I know the speaker won't sound as good as the stereo speakers on the M8, but will it at least be as loud? That's all I care about, I don't care about the quality. I will use headphones most of the time, but I want it to be loud enough for notifications, etc.
Ok, now on to my gripes about the M8 that I posted earlier in the M8 forum:
1. After all the constant "excellent build quality" praise that the M7 and now M8 constantly get, I really just don't see it. Based on materials alone, yes, the M7 and M8 are excellent in materials. In actual build quality, they are both quite poor in my opinion. Both of my M7's from last year had screen fitment issues where they weren't flush with the top and bottom speaker grills. It annoyed the heck out of my OCD self and was one of the few reasons why I returned them both.
My M8 has a very similar issue. On the right side of the phone, the top and bottom speaker grills are raised above the glass. So my finger snags when I'm swiping up or down on the screen. Super annoying and I'm going to exchange it for sure, if I even keep this phone in general.
2. The LED notification light....if you can call it one. Is HTC the only smartphone manufacturer that doesn't understand the importance and desire from consumers to have a bright, legible and multi-colored LED notification light? The one on the M7 and now M8 is pathetic. Might as well not even have one. It is the size of a pinhole, can only show green or amber, and it is next to useless.
To HTC's credit, the one on the M8 does seem to be a bit more visible than it was on the M7, but it could be in my head. And also keep in mind that I knew exactly what I was getting into when I bought the M8, so it's my own fault with this issue. I still wanted to mention it however as it still bothers me.
3. The camera. I will keep this one short as there is constant discussion about it and people have varying opinions. My opinion is that it's lackluster, and I never thought I would say my Nexus 5 camera is better than a premium flagship phone. But it is, and I will leave it at that.
And once again, I knew what I was getting into before I purchased the M8, but I fell for HTC's duo camera marketing thinking it might somehow make 4mp's better than 4mp's. It didn't and I'm disappointed for the most part.
4. Software....I don't know what it is, but Sense 6 feels cold and empty to me. Coming from the Nexus 5, I know this might sound like a bizarre statement, but something feels off and I can't quite pinpoint it. It feels, dare I say, boring. Yes it is fast and smooth, I will give it that. But that's about where it ends for me.
I also can't wrap my head around HTC still not addressing their messaging app oddity. On the M7, when you got a new text message and opened the app, the new message wouldn't immediately appear and it would refresh quickly and then it would show up. I don't know about anyone else, but that is super duper annoying to me. And it's sadly still present on the M8.
Some might say, "use Hangouts or a 3rd party app". And I would say "nope". I hate how Hangouts handles SMS and MMS and I don't like to use 3rd party apps for text messaging. Just personal preference.
5. The physical aspect of the phone itself....it's just too tall. I understand they had to cram amps, a bigger battery, etc into the phone. But almost as tall as the Note 3? Come on. The phone feels good in the hand however, but it's just a little cumbersome. And I still hate the top of phone power button placement even thought they moved it from the left side to right.
After all of that being said, do you think the S5 is the device for me? I'm in quite a dilemma because my 14 day return policy of the M8 expires on the say that the S5 starts shipping. So I kinda need to make a decision blind unless I can get my hands on an S5 to test before then.
Thoughts? Thanks!
1. Yes. 110% gone. Dalvik to Dalvik as smooth as the stock Nexus 5.
2. It's pretty loud, sufficient enough for me when I tested it.
What area are you in? Most AT&T stores and some best buys have the S5 on display. Oh, and I'd for sure recommend the S5

I had the same feelings about the M8. I had actually gone to Verizon planning to buy it, but was disappointed with the phone hands on. The phone obviously looks great, but it's got some issues otherwise. It was sitting next to a G2, which actually looked much nicer in terms of the screen, and smaller bezels. The camera got terrible reviews, and as someone who doesn't listen to music from phone speakers the large speakers at the top and bottom of the phone were unsightly and make it seem longer than necessary. I also didn't like the software, and particularly the navigation bar, it felt uncomfortable to use. As a Verizon user, I also want bootloader access which is particularly tough to come by with HTC.
I haven't gone hands on with the S5 yet, but I consider the S4 to be superior to the M8...So I hope to be pleased.
S5 is miles ahead of the S4 IMO. I used it and was VERY impressed. DisplayMate said it was the best screen they'd ever seen on any smartphone.

Hey WizeGuyDezignz, hello from a fellow San Diegan.
I am in a similar position to you.
Either of these phones will be a quantum leap from my HTC Vivid.
Having owned HTC phones for years I really want to like the the new One.
Not having handled one, I still think that it's awkward size will bug me as will the lack luster camera (not that I usually need 16MP but it's nice to know it's there in case you do).
Things that don't having me rushing to get the S5 are
1. Touchwiz is unknown to me
2. Linked to 1. the fact that there is the Knox issue as far as rooting is concerned.
3. I think the dust cover over the charge port could be a weak point and would drive me crazy having to fiddle with it to get access every day. Specially seeing that regardless of which phone I get they will be protected by a case-mate tough case which has been outstanding for me on my Vivid.
I look forward to more hands on reviews once the S5 starts selling here.

I will 110% get the wireless charging backplate/charger from Best Buy (I'd recommend it to anyone getting this phone ).
Also, the new TouchWiz is quite intuitive IMO. It's very simple and you should have no issues picking it up.

The inductive charging is a great idea but I am sure it wont work through a protective cover.
Oh yeah with a case it's unlikely to work, unless you get a wireless charging capable case. I go naked on my phones, so it's no big deal

"The Galaxy S5 Has The Best Smartphone Display Ever!"

Display Mate has done there testing on the display of the S5 and have crowned the S5 with the title of "Best Smartphone Display"
The S5 improves over the S4 in pretty much every single way, brightness is vastly improved allowing the S5 to reach a brightness of 650+ Nits on auto brightness while screen reflectance has been reduced. Color accuracy is also vastly improved.
Even more impressive is that when Automatic Brightness is turned On, the Galaxy S5 hits an incredible 698 cd/m2 in high Ambient Light, where high Screen Brightness is really needed, which is 47 percent brighter than the Galaxy S4 and 6 percent brighter than the Note 3 with Automatic Brightness turned On – it’s the brightest mobile display that we have ever tested.

The Galaxy S5 display delivers 22 percent higher Brightness than the Galaxy S4 with the same display power. Taking into account its 4 percent larger screen area, the Galaxy S5 has an impressive 27 percent improvement in display power efficiency over the Galaxy S4. Turning this around, for the same screen Brightness the Galaxy S5 uses 18 percent less display power than the Galaxy S4, which helps improve the running time on battery.

Pretty impressive to see OLED displays mature so quickly. Also surprising as most articles just mention the .1 inch increase over the S4 as the only major difference between the two phones.
Came here to start my own thread about this news but you beat me to it

First thing I noticed about the S5 was it's immaculate display. The first AMOLED display DisplayMate tested ranked at the very bottom of their list, (about 4 years ago) and now it's at the top. I'm impressed.

I agree that the screen was very nice when I used it as well. Hell, everything was really nice. The S5 is going to win over some Samsung haters because of how good it is. Samsung did a great job with this phone.

Yep! These days, if you can't find any major complaints with a phone, that's plenty reason to love it!

It really shows that Samsung wasn't joking when they said they were going back to the basics. They have improved the Camera tremondously, the display is in a whole new realm and battery life has been tested and shown to be better than the Note 3's. Add to that mix the solid build quality and the speedy performance of touchwiz and Samsung has a true winner on there hands.

I scoffed at the S5 when Samsung revealed it (but than again, who didn't XD). After using it, I can safely say it is one of the best smartphones out there.

I definately didn't scoff at the s5 when it was announced, just like i didn't at the s4 last year.
As soon as i saw the S5, it went top of my list ahead of the m8

Initially, I felt the S5 improved on so little (I didn't care about a better camera, IP67, 0.1in bigger screen, and overall thought it would be super similar) that it wasn't worthwhile to upgrade from the S4 (S4 from S3 was actually big for me because of the 1080p jump). It wasn't until seeing the OS in action that I saw the true benefits.
I don't normally dismiss devices as a primary reaction, but I am definitely guilty of doing to with the S5. I was pretty wrong, that's for sure
I'd also like to mention the overwhelmingly meager press response it received. That didn't help it's appeal either. It wasn't until it got on display and into people's hands that it truly got noticed.

I had the exact same reaction you did. After using it I quickly realised that Samsung had a real winner on their hands. I think it's their best Galaxy S phone ever. I thought the S4 was the worst. That UI stutter and lag was terrible.

Did Samsung fix the banding issue associated with AMOLED?
I think the real problem with the S5 and to some extent the HTC M8 is not the phones themselves, its the messaging/marketing around them.
Think about when Apple comes up with something new in the display, or the camera, or anything else. It may be incremental but they make it seem like its the greatest thing that has ever occurred on the planet ever. I mean how much time did they spend in the 5S release just talking about the improvements to the camera. Nobody really thought the 5S was a huge disapointment, i mean i aside from the obvious (small screen, etc).
The Asian phone companies have simply terrible product release keynotes, i mean just awful. Samsung's was bad, but HTC's was the most boring release i have ever seen. Why wouldnt Samsung talk up the things they really improved? If for no other reason, at least the echo chamber reviews will mention the differences. I mean, i am a phone junky and have been for the better part of a decade, and i had no idea the display was improved so dramatically. In fact, one of the primary reasons i skipped the S4 was due to the AMOLED that was completely invisible outdoors on the S3.
If i were one of the CEOs of HTC, Samsung, etc, id swallow my pride and change the format of the releases. I might come out introduce the phone, then get of the way and hire a professional presenter to come out and present all the features in a more compelling and detailed manner.

Indeed, but Tim Cook isnt that great. However, they manage to sell the device better by picking the right things to talk about and by, at least, making it more appealing to watch than say, grass growing
I think it is time i go to a samsung store in India.. and probably try this.. with all of your reviews i am feeling like there is a lot on this phone.. i wanted to buy Note 3.. but I think I will skip it and go for s5.. wish it had 3gb of ram.. just that
