My battery life report ~ focused on idle drain - Nexus 5 General

Heres my first full discharge of my newly purchased N5. It was all light usage as noted below. 70% of the time i had good signal.
Took off the charger at 100%, went to bed. 8 hours later, 96%
40 texts exchanged
10 minute voice call
35 minutes of music via BT
40 minutes of GPS
screen time of 3hrs
total time of almost 2 days

Something I was looking forward to. This suggests the Nexus does have great idle time. And the drain is mostly because of the screen. People are expecting magic with such a screen I guess.

I have been using for the last two days, haven't cracked 2.5 hrs on screen time.... I need to keep tweaking

not sure if this will make a difference for you but 3 things that i did is getting me 4+ hours a day screen on time easily. turn off location services completly (just turn them on demand if prompted), disabling google now launchers always listening option, and my personal best fix, disabling tilt scrolling in the chrome browser. tilt scrolling is a little janky atm because it never actually shuts off, so chrome is always registering any device movement in your pocket or whatever even if the chrome app isnt even open, and disabling that helped a TON

Mine has been great today. I have gotten almost 4.5hrs screen on time and I'm still at 38%. That's with stock rom/kernel and Google now and sync on. Granted that today's usage was mostly on WiFi by it is still much better than my N4 was.

Does anyone have this issue with their Nexus 5? I don't have a sim in it yet (waiting to get my micro sim from T-Mobile). But man, Gmail is absolutely destroying my battery life.
I'm sure my battery life would be awesome if this wasn't happening.

Battery woes.....

So I love my bionic, I really have missed android in general. I came from a ip4 that could go 2 days without worrying about anything. I could stream pandora for 5 hrs at work and still not charge until the next night. The iPhone could last about 2 days with me actually using my phone, not worrying about the brightness or wifi or syncing. It's the third day with the bionic and I took my phone off the charger at 0720 this morning. It sat on my desk for 30 mins then I went three times on words with friends. It has now been off the charger for exactly one hour and 10 mins and it is down ten percent. Should I return this phone or give it a couple more days? I am using juice defender and not rooted.
i would check to see how often your email is syncing. is wifi, bluetooth, and gps off? also go to settings-locations&security and uncheck the location services and share picture location. turn your screen time out down to about 30 seconds. i was on mine for a good 7 hours of browsing and youtube with some pandora and google music miixed in
yesterday and it dropped to 40%.
OR
go buy the extended battery from verizon. It is on sale for $24.99. It only shows up that price after you buy it at the register or put it in your cart online. The sales associates will quote you $49.99 but it will drop i promise you.
I need the phone to at least last 20 hrs with moderate use. How bad is the ext battery?
Plus mine already has all those settings that way
i dont know how the life is yet. however considering it is double the capacity im sure it should be pretty kick ass. 20 hours seems like alot to me with moderate usage for any 4.3 inch screened smartphone. especially one with 4g. I wont have 4g coverage till i get home on monday so im stuck on 3g. i would consider myself a heavy user though considering i tether to my xoom.
You sleep 4 hours a day? All kidding aside 20 hours isn't realistic if you're looking to get that consistently.

I work nights at a hospital. I am looking for the day of work and a entire shift without charging. My ip4 had no problem.

I have the extended battery, but it seems a bit short on power... It will charge to 100% overnight (about 7 hours), but will still drop pretty consistently on moderate usage. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the battery to reach its full potential?
im at 6 hours and sitting at 90%
If you work in a hospital, put your phone on Wifi, it uses far less juice, switching from 3g to 4g and back can kill your battery.

So, have you conditioned the battery? Sure, people will say you don't need to and I can see how "letting your batt run down to 0 then doing a full recharge" x 2 or 3 times will waste so much of your time. Don't do it then and you can keep complaining.
I laugh at folks that totally disregard this tip as if it were requiring you to disassemble phone or something.
I've done a complete drain down/full recharge twice so far ... 8 hours of "new phone setup and play time" and I just dropped to 70% (which is probably 75% with Motos stupid 10% batt gradient).
Gettin 4hrs with moderate/heavy use on 4g network. Not impressed
Screen brightness turn down all theway. Wifi off..gps off
2nd charge of day already.
Well to be fair, word with friends for some reason absolutely kills your battery. Remember when I used to play it my battery would drop 10-20% at a time.
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
Remember also that Moto phones only show battery life every 10% (until you hit 15%) so if you phone reads 90%, it may in fact be 94 or 95%. It rounds itself.
The extended is the way to go....got 8 hrs with it showing 70%....that's with nothing set to conserve....and streaming Pandora Bluetooth about half that time..
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using xda premium
Why can't the stock battery last as long as ip4, that's what I dont get. It sucks, I really like this phone but the battery is killing me. I will say that this phone has the best battery life of all the LTE phones.

Battery Life

Had my N7 on the charger all day while at work. Got home, unplugged it and fired up Splashtop to stream MLG Summer Arena (flash content) with my desktop. Screen at full brightness, headphones plugged in, and maxed volume. About 2.5 hours streaming and a half our of Dead Trigger, I'm down to 27% battery life.
Feels like the battery performance isnt anywhere near the 8 or 9 hours claimed by Google and Asus. Am I missing something here? Anyone else feel like battery drain is really high? Stock, un-rooted, updated to 4.1.1.
Have a trip in two weeks with a 4.5 hour plane ride and would be nice know my tablet could keep me entertained for the trip...

Even though I don't have mine yet I can say full brightness on screen can effect your battery life. I would suggest looking at what apps are running and possibly what could be eating your battery life.
Full brightness, thats the root cause. Try to reduce to, let say 50% ... Or as lowest as you feel OK.
When I use my gnex at home, I set to 15% ... Thats enough and still very bright.
Outside I use auto ...
Thats why I have a toggle widget for that ...
And I can have my gnex easily run for more than 48 hours stand by woth almost 4 hours screen on time

I dunno, that's weird. I've been playing with this thing all day and have 3 hours screen time and 65% left.. live wallpaper, Dead Trigger an hour, SuperGNES (FF3) two hours, XDA and web browsing. I'm on 50% percent brightness though.

100% brightest is way too bright indoors for me. Optimal indoors for me is about 30% and probably wouldn't go above 50%.
I've been getting 6 and a half hrs screen on time with over a day on battery, this has been 3 separate times. I use this tablet a lot, total time with me adding up that screen on time is over 25hrs maybe 30. I'm not counting the time when I first got it and ran it down several times before I was getting way better screen on time.

I use auto brightness and I'm getting way more than 10 hours use. Thats browsing and the occasional youtube.
Very impressed with the battery life and the whole Nexus experience.
My brightness is to 12%. More than bright enough for me. Getting around 9-10 hours with moderate to heavy usage. Very impressed with battery life.
I get better battery on CyanogenMod then I did on stock. Plus I can underclock to as low as 800mhz and it still runs like a champ.

I have been amazed at how long it last.Over 10 hours with headphones running listening to lots of songs, trying out different apps and then watched the movie.Still never got under the 30% mark on the battery.
I've knocked down the brightness to 50% and will see how well the battery lasts after charging last night. So far I've been off the charger for a little over an hour with 40 minutes of screen time, down to 91‰ battery life.
The stock ROM doesn't have a way to take screen shots, does it?
Seriously, you had brightness and volume at 100% while using Splashtop, then gaming (pretty high intensity stuff) and you're surprised it lasted less than a stated time for Web browsing at like 50% or less brightness?

I want to say the battery tests were performed at similar conditions while watching a movie for the eight to nine hour rating. Perhaps Splashtop pulling so much bandwidth on the network was a factor.
2.5 hours since unplug, 2 hours of screen time, down to 65% battery. YouTube, Chrome, Dead Trigger, and Facebook so far this morning.

Disable Wifi while you're in the air. That should make a difference.
my battery life has been spectacular. one other thing I noticed. when it charges to 100% (my nexus S never did), it stays there until you start using it. Best battery life of any mobile device I have had, ever. Except for my NOkia candy bar phones that stay charged for days.
I think my nexus may be defective. At first I left it at auto brightness, and drained the battery with 4 hours of screen time only web surfing. I've manually set the brightness to 35, and I still only get about 4.5 hours. This is just using Google chrome, no music. Throw in the occasional 10 minutes of world of too. Also what is standby drain for you guys? I lose 14% overnight, about 7 hours.

What screen brightness are you using? Do you close all apps that you aren't currently using? My screen is the biggest battery drain, but I keep the brightness to sub 40. Normally I would just use auto, but I had no luck with it.

Phone stability

I'm at 146 hours of uptime now. Never gone this long without a random reboot, even on my nexus 5. It helps that the battery is better as well, so I haven't had it die on me yet. Yesterday had 3.5 hours of screen on time, over an hour of phone calls, 1.5 hours of streaming slacker, all in about 10 hours off charger. My nexus 5 would have been dead by 3pm, but I plugged the S5 in after 6 and still had 20% left.

no stability issues here, and excellent battery life as well. I'm a heavy user and can make through a day easily with life left to spare, our iPhone 5S and 5 couldn't do half of what we do without being plugged in at some point in the day. I have sync on, gps etc, first phone I've had where thought of not having enough battery life doesn't even occur to me.

Screen on time

It's amazing how much we actually use our phones in a given day, especially when we watch "videos"! Rate this thread to express how many hours of screen-on time you can get on the HTC 10 before depleting the battery.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I like this idea and I'm surprised there are no comments yet! Indoors usage I'm getting around 7 hours screen on time if I skip gaming, could get more if I didn't visit my GF place cause the reception it's crap over there, but I'm pretty happy with the current result
Wtf! I'm getting under 3 and I'm a light user. I just browse the web, open yahoo mail and do a little raiding in COC and that's it. What is your guys secret?
Getting constantly around 5 with stock settings, social networks, some gaming and camera.
I get about 4 to 5. But it's also over 24-32 hours total, and a decent amount of music streaming over bluetooth. So if I instead measured over 16 to 18 hours instead, and didn't stream over bluetooth so much, I bet I could 6+.
Mostly around 5 hours SoT.
I have been getting anywhere from 3 to 5 hours with mixed usage. I believe that the phone is still trying to balance though, I have only had it for like 4 days. Hopefully I can get to 5.5-6 after the system gets into a groove

Whats your brightness? Are you on data or Wi-Fi? Is this 3 hrs of sot with over a day of usage? Are you listening to music as you use phone? Do you have an Android Wear device? Way too many variables. It is better than your previous device based on your usage.
P.S. it's always best to compare only with yourself using other devices as nobody uses a phone with the same exact settings and each little configuration adds up to such disparity. Ex: Once had my S4 die in less than 3 hours with straight benchmarking and the same device have over 12 hours of sot and like 5 days off the charger.

Also there's 2 types of panel, could be useful to include which panel you have as I wonder if that might cause different results. My screen time is pretty rubbish, it's always the highest thing using the battery. I think I get around 3-5 hours using auto screen set with a max around 1/2 which is worse than my old M8 and is really annoying me as I struggle to get through the day.
I've got the Sharp panel.

Only problem with comparing SOT is different people have different apps and habits, it's impossible to categorize everyone into light medium and heavy usage groups.
Personally I usually get around 3 - 5 hours SOT and I consider myself a light user and I am trying to get the most from my phone.
Itd be good if there was some kind of comparing table where different apps and their footprints were taken into consideration.

The phone is amazing!!! I'm using debloated stock Verizon firmware ( stock rom as well) rooted. I do use aggressive doze option in greenify app which is the only " battery saving" feature I have.
I use my phone quite a lot for making calls, snapchat and little bit of gaming ( world of tanks blitz for about 30 min, amazing game by the way). I couldn't be happier with the battery like and overall performance of the phone. HTC has made a good comeback!!!

Anyone with non-stock ROMs and Kernels getting better?
today was my first full day with the 10 and i only got a little less than 2 1/2 hours of SoT (just plugged it in when it hit 10%)
i was connected to wifi almost all day, and streaming music for about an hour.
also i noticed that it lost about 10%/hr while just idling. i unplugged at around 9am and it was down to 85% at 1030 with literally zero usage.
definitely super disappointed with the battery life so far, but i'm sure it will improve over the next few days.
also this is the TMO US version.
My experience pretty awesome so far
Loving the battery on the HTC 10. Coming from a Galaxy S6 that could barely get 2 hours SoT this phone is a treat.

As long as you keep wifi off, you can get 6+ hours of medium use across 1-1.5 days out of this phone. I got 4hrs+ SOT over a 4 day period with light usage. Only condition is wifi can't be on. With wifi ON, the phone won't last a day of light/medium use.

I dont know about you guys but im getting outstanding battery life. I'm going to do a test later today. Im going to charge my phone upto 100 (after it reaches 0 today) and then when 5 minutes after it says is 100, i will unplug it and i will put a 1440p video that last more than 8 hours and see how long it last with full brightness and wifi on. Then im going to post Very specific details about how everything went. Oh , aslo it will have speaker at its maximum
oh and just have in mind, i have 35 user apps installed, and some of them constantly sync (so it means more battery consumption)
Just over 3hrs. I dont think my phone has started optimizing apps or putting them in Doze.
My sot had been nothing short of spectacular.. I'm getting 5hr average... nexus 6 would barely reach 3... my g4 not even 3 also..I always wondered how people were getting above 4hrs.. Ive gotten 6+.....I jus miss stock Android
I get 4 hours with medium usage and leave everything on. Wifi, BT etc. Brightness is on Auto but it shows at 50% to 70% most of the time at work. It's my bright office...LOL

Same as I got yesterday... I don't do anything to try and extend battery life though (brightness always on auto, and I usually turn it up a little bit). Today will be my 2nd full day with the phone, and after 2 hours off the charger I had 99% left (only 5 minutes screen on time), but then I used the phone for about 15 minutes and it dropped quick to 94%)... Time shall tell, hopefully it is till just optimizing like you said...
I'm on my 2nd charge and like you guys above, I'm getting abysmal battery life.
I'll give the phone another week or so to optimise, and if it doesn't - it'll be sent back to T-Mobile with a piss poor rating in terms of battery life. What a shame if that's the case..
2 hr 17 minutes screen on time. 68% left, second screen turned on while sleep. Loving it! Restored all my app backup from Google, so its not a plain phone.
This is after my first full charge it's only gonna get better as I rarely install new apps.
Auto brightness at times, manual on others, as the brightness of this phone doesnt compare at all to my note 4.

First full day at work with the phone, and actually pretty light usage day and gotta say the battery is a bit of a let down so far. My shorter days at work over the weekend gave me some concerns, but today I'm at 2% left with 13h 28m standby and 2h 17m screen time. No calls, no videos. Maybe a dozen messages, web browsing, 20mins of spotify for commute. Frankly it "feels" like it lasts the same as my 2 year old m8.
10hours 45Minutes
I don't have a sim in mine so all my use is just on Wi-Fi. Indoor use with 30-40% brightness, 49 apps and services disabled. The day after this I did 1080p 60fps video streaming while plugged into my Bose speakers using the Hi-Fi DAC for a little over 5Hours and got about 6.5Hours total SOT. But so far 10hours 45 minutes is my record. Another time I did get right at 10 hours so it wasn't a fluke.
I'm not activating mine either so that's pretty sweet.

Hey, can you share any settings you may have altered to receive such SoT. I'll be lucky if I get 4. I used to get 6-7 hours on the Note 7 I had.
Yeah the battery life sucks, and I like everything else about the phone except ****ty LED screen (I know why they didn't use AMOLED, not cost, but because with no physical home button, the buttons would burn images in AMOLED, LED won't). In any case the true test of a battery is Pokemongo at 100% brightness (which you need with this screen at all times to look half way decent). Note 7 5 hrs, Note 4 4 hours, V20 3 hours, all at 100% and same resolution/settings. So yeah, the battery life sucks, end of discussion. And my phone is a week old, no bloat and settled. Another quirk is sometimes Antutu gets 147k excellent score and sometimes it gets half that, for no reason at all, as well as 3dMark being horrible as well for some reason, half of what it should be.
This is my third LG phone (Had the V10 and G5 before), and the battery performance appears very strong on this. On my first full, non-setup charge, and using my normal work activities (lots of emails, texts, calls, and periodic social media), here's what I got
Total time on battery: 54 hrs 52 min
Total call time: 3hrs 2 min
Total SOT 2hrs 44min
That's great life a regular business user. Also, the screen is way brighter than the V10 and G5.
I've been getting phenomenal standby time on this phone, thanks to the new and improved Doze, better than any other phone I've ever had actually. I'm just not getting great SOT, like many others out there and I can't figure out why. I've had the phone for about a week now and all of the apps should've been optimized by now, I think. Anyone else having similar issues?
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Dmarco, a factory reset could be the solution
Guys it is simple. It is the same Snapdragon 820 in about 10 other devices with similiar battery sizes. But the V20 will get A LOT less screen on time, my estimation is 25-50% less depending on how bright the screen is. I need the screen at 100% and low comfort blue filter to make the screen even kinda decent, like a Samsung at 70% brightness. Anyways the LCD screen on the V20 eats A LOT of battery power, it can't compete with an AMOLED. That said, the only benefit is that in 2 years your screen won't have any burn in and be worthless.
