UK pricing - Nexus 5 General

is it me or is the UK pricing ludicrous, most offers once you add it up come to around the same as a Galaxy S4 if you want 500 / 1000 meg data, and this for a phone which is almost half the price.
We is getting ripped off
also - £419 at argos, £529 at littlewood - wtf !!

The general public will have little to no idea that you can buy the phone cheaply from the Play store. Because of that, the high street phone stores can afford to charge normal prices for the phone, as people will happily pay them.
For the rest of us though, we can get the handset nice and cheaply from the store, stick a cheap SIM in and be happy.

Yes, I've noticed that. A friend of mine almost went for purchasing it from Carphone Warehouse. Luckily he shared his intentions early and now he's waiting for his Google Play Store Nexus to arrive

initially carphone warehouse were selling the nexus 5 16GB for £295 with free delivery which works out at £15 cheaper than the play store, real rip off right?
Also £34 a month on a vodafone 4G contract with a free handset...that's £8 a month more than SIM only which means you're paying £192 for the handset...go figure.

No need to be an ass @bleets
I personally purchased my Nexus on the release day for £295. That was the initial price for about a week. Apparently it's doubled now.

I'm more concerned with how much we're having to pay on the play store compared to usa.
350 dollars = £218 not £339

Anyone bought the kaiser at a decent price recently?

Has anyone bought the kaiser at a decent price recently? From the feedback in the forums, tursted web stores are a lot more expensive Even ebay is getting expensive...
I got mine from Orange (in the UK). My contract just expired - I spend about £50-80 per month and I negotiated 300 minutes, 500 text, 30MB data per month with unlimited data at evening and weekends for free, plus I got the phone for free as well!
The only other vendor in the UK that I know is selling the Tytn II is T-Mobile. Hit Orange with T-Mobile's web n walk service and they will probably bend a little, especially if you talk to the cancellations department - they will do everything they can to stop you leaving...
I got mine from egadget depot .com price match available and honest merchant with fast shipping.
Cheapest I found was £428 inc P&P at http://www.handtech.co.uk/

Att website has the TILT for a reasonable price:
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...etails/?device=AT&T+Tilt(TM)&q_sku=sku1060009
I own a small business. I recently moved 25 lines over from Sprint to AT&T. This was via an authorized dealer (AT&T franchise). They gave me my Tilt for $300.00 bucks. I will never deal with a corporate store again. It's almost like they have more freedom to do what they want in order to win business. My friend moved his family plan over from Tmobile to AT&T with the same franchise and they gave him the same deal as me.
Got mine from craigslist. Brand new at&t tilt for $400.00 even. best deal ever.
got mine for 300 euro's at a place they call the black market they sell all sorts of things before the official release date and for a reasonable price oya and thats only the phone with no contract or monthly payment it used to be the vario 3 but i sim unlocked it and flashed it with the dutch rom

There getting 499.00 at the att stores here. Retail ,no contract needed.
Add in 6% tax and 15 bucks to unlock it and your at 534 grand total.
Just walkin and walk out with a new phone.
What gets me is how someone would pay over 600 plus shipping on Ebay for the same thing (locked to att also). And theres alot of buy it nows on ebay over 600 bucks for a tilt. I must be missing something, I dont understand that.
OK whats the lowest price available for the tytn ii not the att tilt?

care to explain the details?
I have bought 4 units so far for family and friends. For Shops I would recommend Inkino Ltd at 48 Tottenham Court Road and 9 Great Russell Street. They recently had deals for HTC TyTN II P4550 Kaiser and 6GB Micro SD for £499.95.
I have also bought a unit from www.htcdirect.co.uk I was impressed with their speedy service, responses to my email queries and the unit turned up very nicely packaged. I will be using them in the future too. The only reason I went with HTCDirect was that Inkino had sold out at the time. Its always good to know more than one good source.

"O2 will be the only UK operator"
Tesco, Argos, PCWorld, Currys and Google Play are not operators
So that's either a PR coup for O2, sloppy journalism by pocket lint or both. My money is on both.
I'm not buying for the first month anyway. I'm waiting to see what's wrong with the phone first.

I'm pretty certain that anti-competitive practices like that are illegal under EU law.
My guess is that it's a PR stunt but with a toothless watchdog the profits from sales would outweigh any fines, if they got one.
Who knows, O2 is getting mentioned on fora so it's working
I hope it is available in high street stores sim free. I plan on selling my HOX on Gumtree then buying a N4 from a shop that same day as I don't have the spare cash to buy the Nexus first
The N4 is 'free' on o2 on their 24 month/£36 a month (1GB data, unlimited calls, unlimited texts) contract...anyone care to work out what a similar sim-only deal is? I'd imagine it'll be a LOT cheaper to buy the phone out right and get a SIM-only contract...
EDIT: o2 Simplicity SIM-only deal: £20 a month (1GB data, unlimited calls, unlimited texts) x 24 months = £480 + £279 (16GB Nexus 4) = £759 for the 2 years...o2 give you phone for 'free for signing up to pay £864 over 2 years. That makes perfect sense, o2...

I reckon you must be bonkers to go for one of these deals. Surely anyone with sense will be buying outright and switching to a far more competitive SIM only deal.
I recall that when Google launched the Nexus One their intention was to shake up the mobile phone market by selling direct to the consumer - however it was priced far too high at circa £500. I ordered mine direct from Google and as part of the shipping tracking you could follow the flight from the USA - much better than the recent Nexus 7 debacle!!
I reckon with the low priced Nexus 4 a huge number of consumers will be buying unlocked phones.

Yeah, you'd be silly to tie yourself in to £30+ a month contract for 24 months when it's only £279 for the 16GB version sim-free.
I really think that price is amazing. With the more commercial S3 and iPhones being around £500 (with more memory and radios, I know) the price for the Nexus 4 is fantastic. Lack of LTE means nothing to me. The LTE plans EE have released are far too expensive. Something like £35 a month for a 500mb data plan. No thanks.
SIM-free phone and Giff-Gaff (runs on o2) SIM - £15/month unlimited data with decent minutes!! BOOM!!
http://giffgaff.com/goodybags
Now we play the waiting game. And then not buy from O2, since they have stupid prices. I'm also on Giffgaff, so £12 a month for me starting November for 250 minutes, which I always never use, plus unlimited data.

We can only hope that anyone buying a SIM free N5 knows what the RRP is from Google (it's in stock on the Play store anyway) and won't be drawn in by this ridiculous pricing that's floating around on O2 and eBay!
Im on their 'Refresh' plan was thinking of upgrading even though i only just got my HTC One in August.
Then i saw this!
£32 on 3G.
£12 for the tariff
£20 for the phone
32x24 = 768 plus one of fee of 49.99
£818 over 2 years
It's ridiculous. I was tempted to get a Nexus 5 from Carphone Warehouse until I found out that they only have 16GB edition. O2 have exclusivity on the 32GB and this allows them to get away with jacking up the price waaay up. Bad O2, very bad.

So quite possible it will be available via amazon.co.uk. I'm gonna wait and see and if so buy via amazon as I think I then will have better customer service should I need to return it if its faulty. I believe the fine print says they only match contract prices, not non-contract...
Best Buy also sets insane prices on their inventory that hasn't been released yet. So it is not certain this is the final price.
Best Buy doesnt price match cell phones...I bought a droid maxx for my wife for 499 at verizon store, i went to best buy first to see if they price match and the manager there said cell phones dont qualify for price match
Best Buy has updated the price to $449 to match Sprint's price. As I suspected, it was just a placeholder.
Sprint doesn't have a cheaper plan if you bring your own device do they?
Seems dumb. If you want sprint, why not sign a 2 year and get the phone for $50....

I think it's only $50 if you switch from another carrier. It's $150 for upgrades.
Negri has the D820 for $459.50 and $524.50 for 16GB/32GB. International D821 for $70 more. Or, they will on the 8th if they don't give the same runaround as the Note 3 for T-Mobile.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4
Since this is a BB thread and my gift card pretty much means I have to buy it there, figured I'd share the fine print of the price match deal:
At the time of purchase, we will match the current pre-tax price for new, identical, immediately available products from a local retail competitor's store and these designated major online retailers: Amazon.com, Apple.com, Bhphotovideo.com, Crutchfield.com, Dell.com, Frys.com, hhgregg.com, HP.com, HomeDepot.com, Lowes.com, Newegg.com, OfficeDepot.com, OfficeMax.com, Rakuten.com Shopping, Sears.com, Staples.com, Target.com, TigerDirect.com and Walmart.com. We will match prices between our stores and BestBuy.com®. We will also match prices post purchase if we lower our price within 15 days of your purchase.
The Guarantee is limited to one price match per identical item, per guest and does not apply to: Contract mobile phones sold by any online retailer, the online prices of retailers not listed, the online prices of third party vendors (Marketplace vendors) on designated major online retailers websites, post purchase price match requests to competitor's prices, Best Buy for Business™, offers that include financing, gift card offers, bundling of items, free items, pricing errors, mail-in offers, coupon offers, competitor's service prices, items that are advertised as limited-quantity, out of stock, open-box, clearance, refurbished/used items, our and our competitor's Deal of the Day, daily deals, special hour sale event items and credit card offers, BestBuy.com Clearance & More and Marketplace items, and items for sale Thanksgiving Day through the Monday after Thanksgiving.

So basically even if they WERE willing to match Google's $349 and build your contract around that price (which would come out to $50), Google.com doesn't fall into the group of websites they're willing to match in the first place. There ARE however two interesting wrinkles here: For starters, while they won't match ONLINE contract phone prices, print ads are fair game. Secondly, from BB's faq on price matching:
How do I request a price match from a Best Buy retail store?
When making a purchase, or during the return and exchange period after your purchase from a Best Buy retail store, please talk to a Customer Specialist or go to the Customer Service desk for help with your price match request
Click to collapse
The return window is 15 days, so if you see any print ad selling it for less during the two weeks after you buy it, you can just go back in to BestBuy with your receipt and they'll give you back the difference (excluding any black friday specials).

Any reason to not order from Google Play Store?

With preorders starting soon where should I be ordering? I was planning on just ordering on the Play Store because that is where I ordered my Nexus 5 and 7 (2012). I'm currently on T-Mobile and have enough money to pay cash. Would there be any advantages in ordering somewhere other than the Play Store? I know the Play Store charge for shipping and Tax. I like that they have offered free screen replacement for the Nexus 5 recently. Even though I have never broken a screen on a phone before. I have been happy with google's service in the past. Any advice?
I will order it from whomever can it to me the fastest, but in this case it will probably be google.
In my opinion, if you have the ability to order from the Play Store, then that's where you should get it from. Google has great customer service and a great warranty policy, and you only get to take advantage of that if you order it directly from them.
Sent from my iPhone 6 using Tapatalk
Tax is really the only reason not to order from Play. You'll be waiting a few months before finding a place that you could get it from without paying tax and then you have to worry about poor customer service. Eat the tax and buy it straight from Google.

Exactly. I kind of see the tax and shipping as the cost of their great warranty policy. I had to warranty my N5 a couple weeks ago and the process was completely painless. I called them at like 3pm, and I had the replacement on my doorstep the very next day. That's some crazy fast replacement shipping.

As a Verizon customer, I fear that may end up being sufficient reason not to order from the Play Store. I really want to nab one ASAP, but if the Play Store version doesn't work on Verizon, I'll end up having to go through the hassle of returning it and buying from Verizon. :/

I know there was an option for quicker delivery. I feel kind of dumb because I can't remember which shipping option I chose (standard or rush). From the price, I'm thinking I may have chosen quick shipping as it looks like it shipped 2nd Day Air via UPS. What I can tell you is that it shipped from Lousville, KY on December 24th, and arrived on my doorstep December 27th.
I believe when I ordered my nexus 5 on launch day from google it was like $25-$30 for 2nd day. And I believe google is shipping on the 3rd? T-Mobile is the 12th? Just hope you get through to order. Lol

is it really the 3rd? that would be fantastic... but I can't afford it straight from google at the moment... i need to put it on a interest free loan somewhere xD I'm hoping amazon puts the phone up for preorders too. though I don't expect it with their push for firePhlolne
Damn tax plus 14 shipping. That brings it to around 780 dollars. 650 for the 32 GB was already pushing the limit for me (about 715 dollars with tax and shipping I'm estimating). I'm probably gonna have to wait for amazon for this. Amazon also has great customer service and free shipping for prime members so I'll be alright with them. (But then I'm gonna probably regret it later when google does some kind of great deal lol) I guess I'll decide tomorrow

Hey I forgot if AT&T charges shipping for pre-orders. Do they? I don't think I paid any for my S4 last year.
No taxes here in Oregon

As a Verizon customer, I fear that may end up being sufficient reason not to order from the Play Store. I really want to nab one ASAP, but if the Play Store version doesn't work on Verizon, I'll end up having to go through the hassle of returning it and buying from Verizon. :/

There are no 'versions'... All phone's are the same. This is a Nexus device, not a Google Play Edition of some other phone..
I'm getting it from the playstore.
Don't forget that if you get it from Play Store, then Google will replace it for free if anything goes wrong. I don't know if this is official policy but I've had friends use it and its excellent service. e.g. one friend complained his N5 wasn't getting gps signal regularly, sent it back and they sent him a new one.
So if paying full price, I'd rather get it from Google vs Amazon etc.
They will replace it, but with a refurbished model. It says so in the google play store terms of service.
Not that it's a bad thing, just giving people more clarity on this.
