Hello everyone, based on extremely poor ATT coverage in my area comparing to T-M I plan to purchase AT&T Note 3 SM-N900A, unlock it and use with T-M SIM card.
Would I face any issues in terms of unlocking and data coverage?

Soooo.... why would you want to buy a N900A. I feel like we are missing some piece of info. What about getting the N900T and having the best of both worlds. The modem on the N900A is more restricted than the Tmobile version (surprise surprise).

Other than the firmware the phones are identical, correct?
Right now I borrowed Note 2 AT&T SGH-I317 and it seems (to me) to work OK on T-Mobile.
Yes, the Note 2 was one of the last phones before ATT went crazy and started locking down everything. You could enable the AWS bands of tmobile on the ATT note 2. Here is a guide for the N900T if you go that route. Many of us are doing it. You can use it on either carrier. If you are going to use tmobile you might as well use the wifi calling also. It's free and only on the N900T.

I know. My point is that the N900T works perfectly on ATT and Tmobile. It works on both carriers and is the most up to date. The N900T has had J7 for a week where the ATT model just is now getting J5. The carrier specific features like wifi calling are not on the N900A.
Also if you read in that thread I list the fcc bands that are active on the N900A compared to the N900T. They are more restricted than the Tmobile version.

Ok thanks again, all I need is the best deal on either used or new N900T. I don't see any listed on Amazon and pricegrabber brings up three crazy deals price of $700 with signing up with T-Mobile

Sorry for barging in just a quick question and this thread seems to be the most logical place to ask. Anyway, I have AT&T and just got the Note 3 n900a. If i got a T-Mobile version n900t and put my AT&T Sim in it if i unlock it, will i be able to use it with AT&T's data like hspa+ and LTE or will i just be limited to EDGE. Only reason i ask is because like you say AT&T is going nuts with locking everything down and Im sure its going to be a pain in the a** for the Devs to unlock the bootloader so we can (when it comes) flash custom recoveries and roms. Just like with my att galaxy s4. I was happily rooted and at the time i didnt flash a rom yet i was waiting to find one i like. (mind you i was on the MDL build) and as forgetful as i am just being stock rooted i never froze the samsung software update and it updated to MF3 build and wasnt able to fash a recovery. so i unrooted, reset flash counter and did a warranty exchange and was lucky to get one on still on the MDL build. the second i got that i rooted flashed CWM recovery and flashed a custom rom so it wouldnt update on me. I just dont want the same situation for when the devs unlock the bootloader and get a flash able recovery so just thinking maybe a tmobile note 3 with my att sim may be the way to go to avoid that. lol Not like the note 3 needs any custom rom with the beast of a phone it is but sometimes i like to switch up and use stock/aosp android.

There's a lot of discussions and speculations that the T-Mobile version works on AT&T LTE. If someone is able to confirm this, please let us know. I like to get confirmation before going this route. I have until tomorrow to cancel my preorder with AT&T. Thanks much.

FCC paper work on which bands it supports proves it will work with att bands. i pre-orderd my tmobile version from negri, it is unlocked and cheaper then store.

Tmobile states a requirement of 40 days to sim unlock the phone, but can confirm that the TMobile version that I purchased from a corporate store today has a locked bootloader and doesn't provide any performance benefits over the ATT version that arrived in the mail for me today as well. They are only slightly faster than the international version [N900] and side by side data is slower than the Tab 3 7.0.

BLUF: CF-AUTO-ROOT worked for me on the N900T, have both my N900 & N900T rooted, SIM unlocked from cellunlocker and working like a champ
For the answer to your question: see the attached two (2) images from the same phone, fact is that the information displayed in download mode for the 900T, is a bit flakey for the phone that I purchased from T-Mobile.
I have seen this information change on this device, more than 4 times, my other two N900* models don't have this issue and haven't demonstrated this behavior. In either case, I was able to make the device work on AT&T, but what I haven't seen happen is for my LTE speeds to work properly yet. I am using a N900A, N900T, N900, SM-T217A all side by side and each of the Note 3's are running less than 10mb, while the Tab 3 7.0 is running more than 55mb off the same tower from the same exact location. Seems like I need to find a way to force LTE 14, like the Tab 3 7.0 is using.
Other strange behavior is that the mobile networks menu didn't show all of the options that older ROM's offered, until after I swapped SIM's.

You have to force LTE, look on the ATT forum, there is a write up how to do it, even with then correct APN. It has been confirmed by several people.

Yeah me too. I will not be bullied into locked bootloaders. I pay AT&T alot of money for this nonsense not to happen.

I did the same. the T-Mobile is just perfect. Unlock SIM and Unlocked Bootloader. I haven't rooted yet waiting to decide I want to keep the Note 3.
I'm going to be switching over from T Mobile possibly next week. I'm curious if I need to flash an AT&T ROM or return it to a stock T Mobile ROM.
This is the 1st time that I'll be taking a phone from 1carrier to another. I even asked the rep from the AT&T store what I should do and of course he was clueless to what I was asking for. He just told me to get my phone unlocked from T Mobile and had no clue about rooting.

Once your phone is sim unlocked it will work on at&t. Root access isn't needed. Once you insert the new sim apn data should install automatically. It's good to double check though.
Since you have a "tmobile" device this at&t forum won't be much help. The at&t note 3 has a locked bootloader and the tmobile one doesn't. That means the tmobile one has more capability. I bet in the tmobile threads you'll find others in the same situation as you. They can guide you to improve your at&t experience with a tmobile device.

I had started reading threads regarding this.
For myself as a starter, I just need to confirm the following :
1) for a TMO Note 4, can I flash an ATT custom rom?
2) what's your recommended custom to try first?
3) any other issues that will affect ATT signal/data performance?
- i had read about rooting
- sms issue when wifi enabled
- read about ATT APNs

First of all, N900T is a Note3. Still a good device, but not a Note4. You want a N910T.
I was in the same boat as you. I bought an unlocked T-mobile Note4 and I'm using it with my AT&T SIM. It works great. I'll answer your questions as best I can:
1. There really aren't any custom ATT ROMs yet because the N910A isn't rooted. But you can flash a custom T-mobile ROM and use it on AT&T's network.
2. I like Rapture ROM. Soon there will be some custom stable lollipop ROMs available too.

1. No. You will brick your phone.
2. I like FireKat, but that's my personal preference. There is no "best ROM" so try them all and see what you like.
3. I had no issues getting my N910T to work on AT&T. I just needed an unlock code and I had service instantly. I get a better signal and data speeds than I got with my AT&T branded Note 3.
I have my Tmobile Phone on ATT network, and only have one complaint... Why i waited so long????? Everithing work as intended, even when i red some threats that said some users have issues, here i have none. It works same way as my former N910A but faster and rooted.
I actually switched from AT&T to T-Mobile for the note 4. Sick and tired of AT&T shenanigans. Locked bootloaders on their phones. I had "unlimited data" on AT&T but they would throttle data after 5GB. Speeds on t-mobile are better, true unlimited data, free international data. T-mobile just got it right. I feel so free now.

I called tmobile and ask them if they could flash my unlocked att samsung galaxy note 4 to the tmobile software. They said that they could not and i have to call samsung. I called samsung and spoke to level 2 tech support. Level 2 told me that i can go to a bestbuy store and visit the samsung shop inside of bestbuy and they can reflash the software. I ask the level 2 person again that i did not want a reflash of att software but i wanted the att software fully removed and tmobile samsung note 4 software flashed. He said again that it could be done because the att and tmobile versions of the phone are same hardware wise only thing that is different is the software. I can not say for sure of this works because i have not gone to bestbuy yet to have it done. I wanted to see first what other people here thought about what i was told. Then i would go and get it reflashed.

Doesn't work that way.
The only Note I ever seen that was crossed flash was the OG AT&T Note 1. There is a literal T-Mobile Rom for the AT&T Note 1. It even lets you use a T-Mobile sim on a sim-locked AT&T Note 1. Problem is it's buggy. and sometimes you would lose a signal, or get random freezes and reboots.
For your AT&T Note 4 to work in that fashion, they would have to make a TouchWiz rom from a stock T-Mobile Note 4 ported to work on your phone. A straight flash or even using ODIN to put the T-Mobile Note 4 Rom to your AT&T Note 4 will brick your phone. Modification would have to be made. Don't worry about the locked bootloader as with previous AT&T Samsung phones flashing TouchWiz roms can be done, you just cant flash Cyanogenmod or ASOP roms that's all.

It is, but they can't completely strip your phone of the AT&T software. and dump T-Mobile on there. Someone has to create a modified ROM for it to work on your phone.

I stumbled upon this post while I was trying to figure out what the hell I just did to my phone. I've spent the last 4 hour of my life trying to unbrick my Galaxy S7 Edge; just installing firmware after firmware hoping that it would post with Odin. Right when I was about to give up I noticed something happen on Odin that I had never seen before: a green box that said "pass!" rather than "abort!". I looked at my phone to see if it had actually made it out of this boot loop that I had been dealing with for the last four hours, and to my surprise I saw a T-Mobile logo. This stood out to me because the Galaxy S7 Edge that I own is an AT&T device. I don't have the energy to figure out who I unknowingly managed to bypass the Qualcomm Snapdragon's locked boot loader, I just wanted to share my discovery with anyone who was curious. If anyone is wondering: the device is running perfectly with no lag, I now have all the T-Mobile bloatware (lucky me), I can still connect to AT&T cell towers.
One final note that I feel like I should mention: When I initially bricked my Samsung, it was because I forgot to turn on OEM Unlock and turn off SafeBoot. It's puzzling to me how I was able to unknowingly do something that few have ever accomplished and doing so with all of Samsung's security measures still in place.
Update: Wanted to also mention that knox never got tripped however so far Samsung Pay is not useable.

I think you can cross flash with certain phones and carriers. I flashed tmobile galaxy s7 software onto my girlfriends sprint s7 and it works perfectly gets even better coverage then my tmobile note 4.The phone jst has to be unlocked by the carrier that it!
Wait.....so your saying you took full tmobile (gsm) software and flashed it to a sprint (cdma) device?....and it works perfectly?...and by flashing you don't mean swapping of motherboards?.... Common mistake I'm sure
Has anyone tested yet the SM-G950U1 firmware from Updato.com in your Verizon S8 yet? prior to the S8 i had the 7 Edge with unlocked firmware and worked just fine, just wondering if this is official build on the net.
It is and it works. I'm using it now. Gear VR supposed to work also but I don't have one to say for sure.

Honestly I can't remember but I'm pretty sure it was either modified .12 or the unmodified version. I did update to the Canadian firmware first though because the U1 want available at the time.

I thought all the US variants of SM-G950U were bootloader-locked and hence we couldn't root. Are you guys saying that with this U1 firmware, it's unlocked and hence we can root? Link? I'm very skeptical this works.
Nobody said it was bootloader unlocked. It's carrier unlocked without any carrier bloat.

No, the firmware comes from the unlocked S8, which means is bloat free, has nothing to do with root.
I've had the U firmware for a couple of weeks and it works great. Just that there's no video calling. Haven't tried wifi calling yet. Those are two features I've barely used. Battery life is great. I think sprint forums are close to root so I might root after they get everything worked out.

Does Verizon's visual voice mail and HD Calling work?
Verion Video calling is no big deal for me, but I have used Wifi calling once or twice from a store that had no Verizon coverage, but had free wifi. I could live without it, but it would be a nice to have. Then again, no bloat, and some of the Samsung features like Cloud Backup would be cool.
Can this be flashed without tripping Knox/Safe flags? And/or is it easy to flash back to stock Verizon without tripping?

Yes, the HD calling works. Calls are extremely crisp. It's as if you were making a Messenger call over Wi-Fi. It's night and day.
I have the Verizon G950U variant and I'm looking for root, sadly this model doesn't have the "OEM Unlock" option under Developer Settings so I can't flash it without tripping Knox or my phone locking up.
Does anyone know if it's possible to use the Tracfone S8, and flash the Verizon S8 firmware to it? I followed steps from another site and it gave me a firmware with Cricket, Metro pcs, and T-Mobile bloat on it and it was most definitely not Verizon. Anyone have any ideas what might have went wrong? Downloaded Verizon firmware direct from SamMobile but that was what I got. Any ideas or help will be greatly appreciated, hope I'm putting this in the right place rather than start a new thread. Any help, tips, guides, download links, etc. will be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

Yes, the HD calling works. Calls are extremely crisp. It's as if you were making a Messenger call over Wi-Fi. It's night and day.
I have the Verizon G950U variant and I'm looking for root, sadly this model doesn't have the "OEM Unlock" option under Developer Settings so I can't flash it without tripping Knox or my phone locking up.

Just to clarify, are you saying that flashing the G950U1 ROM to a Verizon G950U will trip Knox, or just that if you attempt to root it?

I'm pretty sure that if you were to flash any rom or recovery other than the stock (and maybe even that, I'm not sure), it will trip Knox. Your phone might give you the whole "SEAndroid is not Enforcing" boot screen. This happened to me on my Galaxy Note 5, I even tried reflashing it's sitting in my drawer, lol.
I wouldn't take the risk unless you have been given a spare Galaxy S8 by Samsung to expirement with. It's a little too risky for me
I may be an idiot, but I do know that OEM unlocking isn't available in Dev options. I got my Galaxy S8 a few weeks ago and not quite ready to tamper with it.

I would like to reiterate this question for someone to answer please. I had the U on my S7 Edge and was missing VVM, only thing that was missing that I cared about.

I don't see any indication of HD calling anywhere, visual voice-mail is missing, but I use Google voice anyway.

People have been flashing all kinds of different carrier firmware as well as the unlocked firmware and nobody reported Knox bring tripped at all. Is fine to flash as much as you like.

Wasn't aware of that, I haven't seen anything on xda about it. Will other carrier's SIM cards still work on different roms?
You're kidding right? Those threads were one of the earliest ones posted since the phone was released. If you have an sim unlocked device, it'll work fine, its the same limitation as every other sim locked device. I converted my Vzw S8 to the US unlocked version since Vzw LTE phones come sim unlocked already. Using it on MintSim (Tmo) and it works perfectly fine. Have Wifi calling and VoLTE. If you have any other carrier phones, you'll need to have it sim unlocked to be able to use other providers even if you flash that carrier's rom.
