Galaxy Gear 2 - Samsung Galaxy Gear

Say what? Already?
Built in Gps & 4Gb....why must they do this to early adopters (and so soon). I can't complain, mine was free with my Note 3, but I still feel a bit...meh.
"The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will reportedly launch as an all-Android device which means you won't have to own either the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 or Galaxy S3.
According to Pocket-Lint, Samsung's next-generation Smart Watch will come sporting in-built GPS along with 4GB of onboard memory, it'll also come with running and music apps straight out of the box, something which the original Galaxy Gear was criticised for not having.
It's not clear whether Samsung will keep the same design as the original Galaxy Gear or whether the company will decide to make some changes there as well in light of the fact that it would work with any Android smartphone.
Whilst it may seem as though this is a very short turnaround for a company to be releasing an update it's actually something Samsung has plenty of practise at with the Galaxy range being constantly updated throughout the year."

we don't need that. galaxy gear is perfectly capable of running internet browser and navigation apps, it just need custom rom for that.
they need to update the software and get rid of touchwiz, it will never be usefull.
Galaxy range being constantly updated throughout the year.
say what? they barely make updates, and when they do they do not work properly leaving the user with broken software for MONTHS.

CES 2014 does not mean they will start selling it it the middle of January either.
I like two things,
A display that does not need to time out in 5 seconds
Double the battery life (even though the gear has great battery life now)

They better make the first gear, compatible with all phones so at least we can get some resale value.

Nah, Samsung is going to build the first Nexus watch that will be introduced at CES 2014 Or... whatever

Wow, only ordered one last night. Now question is, do I cancel and wait six months? Now I have typed it out in front of me I say hell no...

Why?
With the work that FOmey and others are doing, why go for 2.0. I have a browser, Nova Launcher, etc. Does far more than my Pebble and getting much more every day. This is what I bought mine for. Other than a few minor thing, it is doing more than I thought it could less than 6 weeks after release. I'm sure we will get TWRP or CWM soon, so we'll have all we need. The hardware is already great, so I'm enjoying it. I'll be buying 2.0 down the road, being a hardware junkie, but this has been so much fun already.

Yea I think they were referring to hardware updates rather than software ones. I agree though, bar lack of rich notifications over most apps, I love mine too

We all know were going to buy it as soon as it hits the shelves.. or atleast I am
I look forward to it ! Would be nice if they offered trade in's if its such a short period of time after the initial release date.

Yeah.. will buy the next gear if it hit the store.. But I will still keep my gear tho..

Only if the Screen does not time out........ At screen on 24/7
Who am I kidding if it came out next week, I likely would buy it

i'm tired of being an early adopter and then left for loong time with barely to no support at all.
they will have to make more improvements if they want my money again.

Early adopter with no support? Really? With the frequent updates samsung provides...i think they are doing a stand up job.
The gear is in constant development and improvment. That's why we all buy samsung. What other company provides as many updates across their Android portfolio as they do?

+1 - Also if the phone is not getting the updates thats due to the cel company's not pushing them out, Because Samsung is.
Also if it was to come out soon I would keep my current Gear. and get the new one. But what if it does not have all that I want and have to wait for cool roms again to make it mine. (OK, OK, I could just do it the old fashioned way) But this is why I love being Married, Her wife have my Gear, Dang now I need one, Time to get the Gear 2. LOL Did that with the Note 2 to the Note 3, gave her my note 2 and got me then note 3. I love my understanding wife.)

From what I read, the first great was to test the market. I was about to buy one but now I will wait a few months. It's hard to keep up with innovation and technology and Samsung is at the forefront. Very similar to what the did What the s3 to the s4.. I believe it was 9 months between them.

[Q] What's next? Life after the Captivate...

I figure many of us are facing the same dilemma here...
Like many of you, the Captivate was my first Android phone. Being an AT&T customer, it was my (our) only choice back in the summer of 2010 and I (we) jumped on it and, besides some ocassional frustrations, haven't looked back since (other than "GPS-Gate", I've (we've) been extremely happy with the "Cappy").
In March I'll (we'll) be eligible for an upgrade with AT&T and I'm (we're) starting to wrestle with the question of what to do next...
Should I (we) stay loyal to AT&T and see what phones they have available/will soon be availble? The SGSII (Skyrocket) looks good, but there's bound to be something new available in a couple of months.
Or, should I (we) jump ship to another carrier (Verizon, T-Mo, Sprint) and have an even better selection of phones to choose from?
So, do any of you have any suggestions or advice? What are you going to do when your contract is up with AT&T? Is Verizon, T-Mobile, or "insert-carrier-name-here" a better carrier to be with (pricing, selection, service, coverage, etc.) than AT&T? Anyone have any experience with the other carriers you could share? Or, is it best to sit tight until after February and see what new phones are on the horizon (SGSIII, something else)???
Ultimately, the plan is to do something within the next 3 to 6 months...just not sure what the right move would be.
I (we) thank you for your comments/thoughts/advice/other!
I keep hoping for the Galaxy Nexus, but its not looking too promising. Of whats coming out as of now what I like the best, and what I find the most intriguing is the Sony Xperia Ion. 1.6 dual-core, 12MP camera, 4.7 inch "Bravia HD" LED backlit LCD. Build quality is supposedly worlds ahead of current Xperias. Its the new phone to usher in a new era of "Sony" phones, no more "sony ericsson". Oh and its playstation certified too, and this will blow your mind, a DEDICATED CAMERA BUTTON! I really don't get how manufacturers are so forgetful to include this one useful button.
Hope that helps. there is one downside to this phone however. Its running gingerbread. I was really hoping to see some newer ICS phones with no buttons at CES, but sadly they were all gingerbread. I don't get this really. Its like if HP released a whole line of laptops with Vista on them! Honestly we all know now after 2 years don't buy an android phone with an outdated version of the OS that promises an "upgrade" because you'll be waiting a while, in fact by the time you get your update, it'll be outdated itsself. Me personally I know next I'd like to get a phone I can leave stock and be happy with it, so I'd prefer to have something with ICS pre-installed on it. But as for the Xperia Ion, its still a bit before its released from my understanding, and the one they had at CES was pre-production and actually had ericsson branding on it, so maybe they'll update it before it launches.
I'm looking at that galaxy note personally. Its rumored to be released on Feb 18 here in the states, I'm probably going to wait for mobile congress convention that happens late in Feb because quite a few new phones should be released.
As for carriers I think they are all pretty much the same. Sprint won't have unlimited once they go lte so it will be just like att and Verizon and such
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
LOL no offense but I gotta ask it, why does anyone want such a gigantic phone that won't fit comfortably in your pocket?
SGS III FTW.... Wait for that!
MWC 2012 is near, wait for it. I won't go 2year contract this time.
As for me, if a phone has Mms, Phone and GPS, it's enough. But the GPS of Captivate in china is not promising. It can only be accurate to 10m in China. So i also wanna change a phone in several months. My first Android phone is Milestone. Its GPS is excellent. So i may choose Motorola. But as we all know, the screen is worse. It's not cool. I also feel puzzled.
Well being 6'4 makes the note not that big and it will fit just fine in any pants that I wear.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda premium
I have the exact same problem but even worse, I am eligible right now! I have to stay on AT&T because it is what my company uses. My cappy is actually running really nice right now on Saurom KK4 so I can hold on if I must. A couple people at work have the Skyrocket and it is nice but I am very hesitant to get a Touchwiz phone on AT&T again as the update delays are ridiculous. I also have a Xoom which is a GED and nice to have vanilla ICS already. I would love a Nexus but don't see that out will ever come to this carrier. At this point I am waiting to see what the Skyrocket HD looks like. I can't wait for the GS3 because even if it will be announced soon we all know how long it will take to come here. I work with someone with an imported Note and it is really nice but a little too big considering I also have a tablet. I just don't get exited about any other phones but I really want a new gadget. Quite the dilemma...
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk

Waiting for Lumia 900. I've been converted and promised my kids the Captivate so I don't have to buy them an ipod.
After getting somewhat burned by the Captivate, is anyone hesitant to get another Samsung phone? Also, if you're waiting for the SGS3, are you concerned at all about getting it right after launch without letting it get "tested" in the marketplace first? I mean, we know what it felt like to be early-adopters with the Captivate and having the accompanying headaches that came as a result... Not sure I'm in a hurry to be in that position again (actually, I just got the Asus Transformer Prime and I'm now having a new set of GPS issues)...
Also, I suppose we'll have to just wait and see, but has anyone heard rumors of any Samsung-killers being announced next month?

My contract is up in March as well. SGS2 is nice, but when I get it, it'll already be several months old so I'm going to try looking forward and perhaps waiting. We'll see when March comes around. I've been happy with my Captivate but I'd really like a phone where GPS worked and something I'd be happy with just root and not have to resort to other ROMs to be satisfied with.

I don't know which ROM he's referring to specifically, but I'm on TeamHacksung's ICS (Build 15). The GPS locks on sooo quickly and is fairly accurate to boot. It's definitely breathed new life into my Cap and it'll make it easier to wait until March for a new phone.
As for the OP's question, I will say that I'm not sure, but these seem to be my options so far:
Galaxy Note: It's nice spec-wise, but I'm going to have to play with it in person to see if I can handle a 5.3" phone. No phallic jokes please
Galaxy Nexus: I know we don't have a release date, but there is always the (expensive) option of buying the international version. After getting burned by Samsung/AT&T's incredibly delayed updates, I'm finding I really want a stock Google experience, especially with ICS out now. There are always the amazing devs to turn to, but it can be a frustrating experience sometimes.
ASUS PadFone: A phone that also plugs into a tablet form factor? YES, please! Unfortunately, no release date or carrier announcement, but I would jump on this in a second.
SGS 2 or Skyrocket: While these are "old" tech, they're still really nice dual core phones. I think the jump from single to dual will be a lot more noticeable than dual to quad in terms of experience. Plus they should be even cheaper by the time I upgrade and the dev support (for the SGS2, at least) is awesome.
Jump to another carrier: unfortunately, AT&T gives the best company discount for me, so jumping carriers isn't really an option, but you never know.
Other phone: I'll probably end up researching other phones, but I've been partial to Samsung just because they do make great phones. But I won't rule out something amazing coming from Sony/HTC/Asus in the next few months.
So in short, I have no idea!
After a year and a half with the original cappy, I've moved on to the Captivate Glide because I like physical keyboards. I am considering the Note depending on what I hear when its released, but I also plan to wait for the SGS III before making a decision on my next phone.
I have one of the first build Cappy's and I've LOVED every min of owning it. I know the time is coming soon for me too. I'll be staying with AT&T, I've been really happy with the service here in Seattle. There are 3 devices that have my eye. The Sony Ion, The SGSIII, and the Nexus Prime. All of which have some amazing specs.
In my opinion, Samsung had some issues with the GPS, and, (IMHO) had some bad timing on the software releases. Honestly that didn't really affect me much, I ran custom ROM's from the moment they were released, and regardless of which device I choose, I'll do the same with it. I've run Froyo/GB and now ICS as soon as the dev's did their magic. And will ALWAYS do the same whichever device I choose. Actually, I just might choose a device the stands to get amazing dev response just for the longevity

I personally think the Galaxy Note would be heavenly . I don't use my cappy as a phone but more as a pmp (personal media player) and think a 5" pmp would be heaven.

still worth buying?

Hi!
I want to upgrade my DHD, and I'm looking on all the options.
So I want to check about the Note.
Is it still worth buying? I don't want to buy and after 2 month there will be Note 2 and this one will get old.
Do you recommend buying this device in two month? (I'm not talking at the device as it is, I did all that research. I'm talking only on the fact it's 7 month old... in two month it will be 9 month old)
Thanks!
Will there be a Note 2 ????? Me thinks it was one off test the waters so to speak. What would make the note better is what I ask. Apart from the latest 4.04 yeah perhaps a fast quad core proc but this thing blazes through everything as is. Only thing really different is the software look at the S3 what's the major diff is the software. (ignore quad and screen size) its the apps.
Buy the Note.
Ps just brought my note last week instead of the S3 and sold my S2
you will get used to the 5,3' screen and you will not want a phone that is smaller than the Note!
I also have HTC One X, quad core Tegra 3, 4,7' screen, but I use Note (of course on CM9) it's simply better to me
I don't want the new software, I'm only afraid there will be no more support here on XDA, as on my DHD. There are no roms coming out!
More people?
We have official cm9 support and a custom kernel..What more could you ask for?
Buy this phone now!
Sadly I can't buy it now... only in 2 month. Will it still worth buying? The device will be almost 1 year!
No need to think over it.I had bought it just 3 days ago and i love it
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
Why no need? If i will buy it the beginning of Aug, it will be 1 year for the announcement. You don't think they will release a new one a bit after?
I know there are lots of great phones coming out, note 2 won't be out until fall at least if at all since they're releasing the true 10 inch tablet version next. This phone is all about the screen, aside from excellent hardware. IMO you'll have a phone that'll easily last another year before you start getting jealous. It's awesome, there's nothing like it.

i think i will buy it, the low price got me.
It's got some real old school devs for this device as well as the infamous cm9 as mentioned previously. Once we get stable Ics kernels there's no stopping us!

Just got mine two days ago. Definitely worth buying now, it will be a while before the 2 is released. If it is. This phone is amazing, now other phones look puny not to mention the amazing display. I thought I was looking at an old nokia when I was on my wife's iPhone 4 earlier lol
Development wise it's still very early days and already progress is being made although I am holding off root as it still seems too risky at the moment. Waiting for it to be as straightforward as the Desire was even without unrevoked.

We have CM9 nightlies which should only get better once ICS Kernel sources are out.
Also, the note has exceptional demand, this surprised everyone - even Samsung.
I am sure there will be another 5.1-5.5" Note 2 in about 6 months.
Samsung hit a sweet spot with the note size that appeals to people who like large screen and the ability to make calls.
Personally I am getting the S3, and when Note2 comes, I'll just switch to it.
Guys I'm thinking of buying one cause of this great price http://www.ebay.com/itm/36045880681...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_11855wt_922
Question is will this work on T-mobile?
to the OP...stop contemplating about what may happen tomorrow, get the Note today and enjoy. Life is too short. Technology will change and if you wait now, you will wait again because you will worry that a better technology will come out later.
get the Note.......and be happy with it.
im sure the note 2 wont be the best for long, but i just to want to buy and after 2 month there will be a new one and developers will stop the develop.
in the other side, the note 2's price will be much higher.

i have the desire hd, and now there are no developers
once in a month there is an update for some of the roms, that includes only new apps and update of apps (as play store, g+ etc.).
Once you buy it, you would never wanna go back. It is the best out there. As far as tech goes, it keeps on evolving at a rapid pace. And GN is nothing like the iPhones where the older version seems outdated the moment newer version is launched. What we see in GS III should essentialy be in the Note II or whatever they call it. I bet it would be the same (maybe a bit tweaked) as on GS III, quad core (A15 dual core might be better than quad but it won't hit the normal, non geeky consumer. General belief: Quad > Dual, More MPs ~ better camera), maybe the same 8MP as on S3 again and such stuff. I hope the design is more in line with Note than a hybrid of S2 and GNex.

im almost sure it will be lighter, and thinner and a screen with a higher resolution, but i dont care about all this, because there will always be a newer and better device.

Will the Gear get ROMs? Use with other phones?

I know it's VERY early, but that 30% discount at Tmobile is tempting me. But I don't plan on getting a Note 3 or a S4. Currently I'm very happy with my LG G2, although I am considering swapping out to a Nexus 5 depending on what that ends up being.
Anyway I'm trying to find a use for the Gear without a S4/N3. Is there ANY functionality that would prove useful just running it by itself?
Do you guys anticipate any ROMs released in the future to have it work with other Android phones, or just to add stand alone functionality to it? Or is it a totally closed system and hopeless?
Right now it's an n3 or nothing. Have not heard of any roms really

Right now without a compatible device to pair it to you can't even use it as a watch, as the pairing process is what sets the time etc, and there is no way to bypass the screen instructing you to pair it with your device. After it's paired it will function as a watch, camera and pedometer without being connected to the phone but that's about it. No idea on roms but I have heard Samsung will be releasing an SDK for developers to create apps for it.

Seriously, how can the Gear keep getting bad reviews?

I've got a lot of wearables (Pebble, Gear, Fitbit, Glass, etc.) and the Gear beats them all by a wide margin based on functionality, ease of use and looks.
I'm still baffled that nearly every review and comment I see still bashes it.
Especially with the latest updates it has become a great device.
I don't understand that either. I mean my only complaint is that I haven't been pushed the new update but I plan to manually do so anyways and the battery life isn't the greatest. But honestly what do you expect from a watch that does so much? I'm happy I don't see what everyone else's problem is. Maybe they expected to strap it on and start curing cancer or something... Its a watch people.

You hit the nail on the head. I have the Quallcom Toq in addition to the Galaxy Gear, and the only better feature with the Toq is their interferometric modulator*display technology (Mirasol display). With this technology, 3 to 5 days battery life can be obtained with heavy usage if the backlight is not used, but the display itself is always on and readable, and actually becomes more readable in direct sunlight. With the display always lit, it appears less nerdy than a blank faced (no display) smartwatch. Bottom line is, I'd rather have one full days battery life out of a useful smartwatch, than 3 to 5 days of battery life from a smartwatch that is only marginally useful and is clunky in its operation. With note 3 tucked in pocket, on a ladder installing an in ceiling speaker, I can answer a call on the Galaxy Gear from my wife, so she can tell me she crashed into my car that was parked in our garage. True story.
Could it be better, sure.... But for a company that took a chance to beat Apple to the mass production line, it is pretty impressive.
My 2 cents worth.
Completely agree with you. I bought a metawatch when it first came out as a developer watch. It was awesome at the time, but the gear blows it out of the water. I mean, battery life isn't bad. I think people read the 25 hours and think it's true. When I first got my gear, I couldn't put it down and still got 2 full days. Now I'm getting close to 4 days. With the notification update, this thing just got way cooler and more useful. It just keeps getting better and better every day. I can't help but to think that people that give it bad reviews either have not really owned one or have not used it to it's potential.

I watched a ton of reviews on YouTube, and while they were all basically saying cool device but lots of problems, there was one similarity. They were ALL done within the first week or two of release. Before a lot of the issues were addressed (namely the notification issue). Even reviews released late November were actually using pre-updated information.
Under my daily usage (heavy notifications, reminders, calls and pictures), I get easily 1.5 days. And since I charge my phone every night anyways, it's no biggie to charge my watch as well. I used to take my regular watch off every night as well, now the only difference is an additional charging cord.
I'm happy with battery life, amazed at how much they crammed into a watch (seriously, this is a WATCH, and look at its capabilities, not even with rooting and such), and am not even mad about the price (my wife bought me a watch a few years ago for about half the cost, and all it has going for it is a few small diamonds inlaid in it. All IT can do is tell me the time)

I've checked out all other reviews on other watches, And my gear do way more than those other watches
Would be nice if it worked with other Android devices though, Like my Nexus 5.
Sometimes the Note is a little large for where I'm going so the N5 is ideal & the Gear would complement it brilliantly.
Hey guys i got a couple of question, I have the pebble watch so when the notification comes on the watch and you view it does it clear it from the phone? also with the pebble watch the talkback system on the phone turns on so that means when i use the stock browser the voice says like "page loading or page loaded" im guessing the gear doesnt do that right?
The device was bound to get bad reviews because of the limited functionality, and limited usability before it was available to the current crop of smartphones.
And even then, you have the issues that Google Wallet faced when it was first released... if it only works with a couple of phones to do a few things, people are going to be quick to dismiss it as a "gimmick"
And it doesn't help when it's not a cheap gimmick as well. Unless you're a serious tinkerer -- like most of the people reading this thread -- you have to be seriously committed to not just Android but to the Samsung ecosystem as a whole in order to actually enjoy spending $300 on this smartwatch.
If Samsung releases a complete solution that would allow the Gear to work with ANY Android phone that supports Bluetooth LE, and work flawlessly without any tinkering, then you'll see a turnaround in the reviews -- much like you saw with the Gear Manager update that allowed additional notifications.
Their application development for the Gear is invite-only, so even if you had access to an SDK you couldn't publish any apps for use with the watch -- again, unless it was restricted to people "like us" that don't mind going out of their way to push an apk and sideload it to their watch, at the risk of turning it into a brick.
It's going to take some doing, and I don't know if Samsung will actually do what is necessary for this particular generation of the Gear to become a mainstream device. I'm glad I got one, but in retrospect it's really a lot of hard work to fully extract its potential. Until Samsung addresses this, I doubt you'll see many stellar reviews.

Touchwiz update for note 3 possible?

Do you think samsung will update touchwiz on the note 3 to be the same as on the gs5, or will they keep it exclusive to the gs5 and later to make you buy the new phone?
I've seen kitkat on the international version and it wasn't even a noticeable difference visuslly, so I'm hoping samsung will push an aesthetic update to touchwiz.

If they think that making it exclusive to the S5 only to make anyone buy that phone, they are ridiculously stupid.
90% of current Samsung owners look at the S5 and laugh at how mediocre it actually is compared to older devices. They really didn't upgrade much and what is upgraded in miniscule at best. Not worth dropping the S4 or the Note 3 to get it.
Another thing is that TW sucks the fattest of asses. Most people would agree with me on that. The only class of devices it is good on is the Note series of phones and Tablets simply because of the S-Pen and it's features.
So... If they update it any time soon, it would be nice/won't matter for us on the Note series of devices. Any other device will probably fall under the don't matter/don't care side.

Oh yeah I definitely agree that I don't think it's a legit reason to upgrade. I have no intention of even considering it I would have just liked the visual overhaul of the settings app and the quick settings (I like color is the only reason). Also I like flip board so having an easier to access extra home screen for the magazine would have been better than swiping up and waiting for it to load. I will probably just use the regular flip board app though.

Oh I meant to add in that I see samsung being dumb enough to think making the new touchwiz exclusive is enough to make people upgrade. Take for example a heartbeat monitor thing... I run with my phone and I don't think this is something I need. But oh man its the next big thing!
