[Q] Rom from S4 - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I´d like to try the new cyanogen mod (on my S4 Active),
is it possible to use one from their list (link) or this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2521384 ?
If I could install it, would it work correctly.
Would something not work?
Or wouldnt nothing work at all?
Thank you for your answers

probably not. You need to check your phone to see it's running MF3. If it is, your bootloader is locked and you will not be able to get into the recovery console however if you do a search for safestrap you will find a solution but you still can't use CyanogenMod

Your question has been asked many times over in this forum. Please refer to the search engine as the #1 rule on XDA is search first as almost everything you will ask has already been asked. Please familiarize yourself with your forum and the rules as XDA is a development support forum but not a support forum.

Your phone is the international version -i9252. same as mine
So Safestrap and those roms won't work, since it's only for the American locked market phones. i.e. ATT and so on.
as far as I can see the only ROMs available is the CM one, and the international Google edition.
Personally I'm still on Stock since there is no good release of any rom for our version out. and it looks like there will never be.
Just root and delete unwanted apps.

Thanks for this info.
I'll be receiving my Galaxy S4A today and was planning to flash the CM or Google Edition.
I'm now also considering your option to just root and delete apps.
I assume you're freezing them with Titanium or just fully delete?
Do you have a list of programs you removed?
I have never cooked any ROMs for smartphones, but I've hacked almost every device that came into my house and made firmwares for those devices that didn't get support from others...
I started the procedure for the cm10.2 yesterday, but it failed to compile when I started to do things S4A-specific.
Pffff I wish I waited for the Nexus 5... It is sold out,but they will soon be on the market again.

I'm using Rom toolbox lite - freezing some apps like bookmarks sync and so on, but uninstalling apps like dropbox, gtalk, chaton, yahoo finance news and those.
Basically just uninstall the big battery drainers.

i need a kernel
i need a t mobile kernel for echoe rom that im still able to overclock on 4.3

I took your advice and merely rooted it and deleted some unwanted apps.
I did have some problems with Odin when using a standard USB cable. It only worked after I used the cable that came with it. Strange...
I hope there's 4.4 soon for our active
Cheers

I own the same device (I am dreaming of a tool able to make S4 roms compatible with our devices) and I am using this rom since about a month http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2395242. It's far better than the stock rom: less laggy, from my point of view it's more user friendly, it has more configuration possiblities. But there are some issues like an error with the date on sms, the external SD doesn't work and the useless HDR mode doesn't work...
There is also some stability problems with some apps.

yeah keeps forclosing for me too and i downloaded loaded and uninstalled like 5times lol i think this is just happeneing with rooted g1's =/ downer
yeap happening to me too. i wonder if it was intentional?
i think someone found a fix for it via the T-mobile forums.
Meh. I have found an easy fix. hint: Build.prop

Dang it. Using Rogers ROM so it's still labeled as HTC Dream. =/
I too am having problems. For all those that need the old version, I am including it in this post. For those that might know how to fix the new one, I am including it in this post as well. Just unzip. Both files inside. 2.0 is obviously the newest version.
Mods, I don't think this is a problem, as the app is not protected and readily available on the Market.
Thanks in advance to someone that can fix it, and I hope the old version helps someone who might have forgotten to back it up.
Yay

helped me out, i tend to forget to back up my apps.
ok i have something strange to report...
i have the new version installed (2.0) and like everyone else it wont open BUT
my battery level just dropped below 30% and my phone got a notification from My Account 2.0 and when i clicked it a popup came up giving me suggestions to save my battery by changing some settings...hmmmm FC but still running in the background...
2.0 myacct
i am also getting foreclosures hope it was an error by tmobile and theyll update tomorrow or something i cant believe they would target rooted ppl.
Anyone with a JF US CRC1 rom tried it?
Could be that since most of us are on anything but the T-mobile rom that it does this
I mean most of these ROMs are based of ADP or AOSP..
I'm not sure, and maybe im just talking non sense..
But also someone in the comments said they had a Google Ion and it didn't work also..
So this could be ONLY for T-Mobile branded phones?

Give credit next time. There is some property in build.prop that the app is looking at to see if our phone is supported....dont know which tho since my ROM's build.prop keeps going back to its default every time i apply a "fixed" one.
The app is getting a NullPointerException, I don't think it has anything to do with being rooted or not.

So what IS the build.prop change that we need to make? And will it hurt anything else if I modify it?
See my post above...its using the build.prop to detect if we can use it...thus this error on some rooted phones.

Yep, go Into developer options and make sure root access is set to apps and adb. Reboot. Go into hybrid properties and set to tablet mode. Then set back to phone and boom! There they are.

Awesome! worked as described. I will be running this for bit and will report any bugs. Thanks for prompt response.
edit: I've been running this heavily with bluetooth streaming and appears to be rock-solid. Only issues so far are some random force closes but a reboot seems to have cleared up most of the issues.
edit 2: I've had 1 soft reboot so far. I was streaming bluetooth, then made a call, then when call ended the phone soft rebooted. The phone loaded fine and was not stuck on logo.
edit 3: Small bug found. When root access is granted to a program, it takes me back to the setup section and NOT the last program that requested the root privilege. Also calendar and Google search have force closes. Ended up uninstalling calendar and reinstalling from backup. For Google search, just restored a backup which fixed the issue.

All right. Awesome. I'm going to install this now.
Are there any bugs I should know about? I want to run an AOSP/AOKP/CM-based ROM while on vacation this upcoming week. I don't want to deal with the stock ROM since it's so freaking slow and laggy.
One more question! Have you tested the battery life? If so, is it good, bad, the same?

There are not bugs that I have noticed and I have been running it for a couple of days... The battery is on par with all of the others... If you want even better battery search for code kernel on droidrzr. It is built for performance and battery life.
Never mind. I'm dumb. I figured it out.
Looks like a very nice ROM. Anyone know if dock line-level audio out (analog, over the USB port) works on this build?
Huh, just saw this thread.
Nice to see ProBAM, built for other devices.
If you needed anything regarding the ROM, feel free to PM me or codexc.
Keep up the good work. :good:
Does Global function work?
I'm interested in flashing the ROM. I'm currently here in Taiwan on business and using GSM feature to run a local SIM card while I'm here. I am currently running Eclipse ROM 1.4 and it's pretty stable and the Global feature works. I don't want to flash if the feature is not available. If it is and no one tested, then I might give it a shot while I'm here. Thanks for porting another ROM :good:

Ok...so just flashed the ROM. The global function is working as the local sim card I'm using is recognized. I have a slight problem as I don't have any of the app menu icon on the screen. My rom loaded with a complete blank home screen, no widgits except for google bar. I can't seem to locate the feature to unhide the icons. Can you help with that? I currently can't add any widgets or even go to the app menu to long press them and add to my home screen. I've messed with the customization menu's but can't seem to find the setting. Also, I installed the Aug 11 build from the repository. I noticed there are 3 of them. I would assume the latest build was the one to load?

You are correct. I did a factory reset and everything came back up. Although it was glitchy with regards to app performance. I am using TWRP and only did the factory reset w/ advanced wipe. I found that doing a whole system format of the internal storage corrected the issues. Thanks.:victory:
Download-Link is broken
Does that mean it has been pulled from working with our phones?

This Rom is ported by spegelius. I've found this here: http://forum.slimroms.net/topic/100-galaxy-s4-active/
Everything seems to be ok.
Bugs:
720p video recording produces crap video(but 1080p works fine)
HDR
Download:

-Gapps
Screenshots:
I am sorry I posted in General but i couldn't post in Development.
Thanks for making this more public, this way more people will get the chance to try it
Just one important hint, @spegelius didn't port it, he compiled that beast from Source, which is an important fact
I can confirm that this is a good, daily driver for sure!

Happy to know about this! Already dowwloaded it but I need my phone working this weekend and I can't risk to have any kind of problem, I will surelly try it as soon as I get home next week.
Thanks a lot! Hope more people start working on I9295, my son's Moto G just got the OTA 4.4 update, lucky him!

I installed this ROM but google play acts strange. It doesn't reinstall all my packages and still refuses to install for instance swype. I chose for the aroma gapps but will do a new wipe and try another gapps

Must have been the gapps. Up and running now and reinstalling apps. Looks good

I have several issues. My titanium restored Wi-Fi passwords are disappearing each time. The phone discharges as fast as it is charging. It will probably be empty after 1 hour on battery.
I think I will switch to my LG G2 I recently acquired... any ideas?

Read back in the thread a few pages - 1) GeoHot works for Google now. Hired to find and close exploits like the one towelroot used to root devices; 2) towelroot used a specific vulnerability in kernels dated before June 3. If your kernel is dated after June 3, the vulnerability has been patched and there is nothing GeoHot can "fix" to make towelroot work on your device; and related to that 3) either your phone has the vulnerability or it doesn't and towelroot either works to root your device or it doesn't and there is nothing GeoHot can do to fix towelroot to make it work for your device. Plus, like I said before GeoHot works for Google now so he can't create programs or apps that root phones by exploiting vulnerabilities he is supposed to now be fixing. Now that this same question has been answered for the 1,000,000th time in this thread, can we please get it closed?

Look on the bright side. We needed CM and other AOSP variants in the past because most devices performed like crap. Now while not as smooth as stock Android, still rather speedy. Customization can be done with xposed mods.
Even if stuck on stock, it's not really that bad, to be honest.
You guys need to start learning something... for the sake of development...

No, I'm with you. I don't flash AOSP ROMs. I'm just afraid of not being able to upgrade to a stock, rooted TouchWiz Android L ROM.
But you're right, Samsung has put in the work and optimized TouchWiz over the years. I have no complaints with the performance.

I don't see why not. We're rooted with custom recoveries. As long as someone released a proper rom it can be flashed.
Otherwise just use Odin to flash the stock rom and root it again.

At least you had the 3G model and official JB (Asia only) . My Wi Fi model was thrown into the dung heap by Samsung after less than 12 months and no official JB or support theater.... Thanks to bodivas for the initial port to the P6810, I could then work from there with newer contributions.
They just ignore the GPL license to support devices for at min of 18 months. There are other OEM that refuse to provide full source too. What does Google do, nothing....
The only way is as you implied, to be proactive and help ourselves (and others) where skill/knowledge and time permit
Good modding !!
More than one way to skin a cat also....
I think they will have support for android L since the specs of the tab S match the requirements of the OS
it's easier for samsung to develop android L for exynos device . i hope my tab will have android L teeheehee
On which webpage provide SAMSUNG there (patched) opensource?
At least recovery image include binary which can't compiled from android source...

Verify what softwear version you are on and use appropriate version,
There is no root for 8.0 so you will have to downgrade to a older U3 bootloader to root if on 8.0
Ok Im on oreo 8.0, I have never rooted this phone but looking at the steps on samfail its 3 different versions of it and what im getting is you have to flash them in order but someone says just flash samfailv3, can some one please tell me what bootloader i need, the proper steps, just a complete walkthrough because i dont wanna mess my phone up and i wanna make sure im doing this correctly, thanks in advance or at least tell me what all i need instead of directing me to samfail thread, its alot going on in that thread and my brain cant process it all.

What are you trying to acomplish with root first?
What would you do in a bootloop situation?

If I downgrade i can prevent bootloop for one, secondly there are many qualities to root, dual speakers, custom roms when they roll out, etc. Reasons y I wanna root it.

This is essentially a RTFM situation. You won't find much help unless you can actually demonstrate something. If you were stuck at a particular step, someone could help you, but you are asking for a walk through for just the first step.
Yes those mods are available to rooted note 8's but do you know how to apply them, or would you be right back here asking for a step-by-step guide for that as well?
Please don't think I (or anyone) is trying to be mean here. You just need to do your own research and figure it out, and if you brick your phone, you brick your phone. That is how many of us learned.
Come back with some actual questions and you will get actual answers. That said, your "how-to" has already been written here
Basically you need to figure out which firmware you have installed, downgrade via ODIN if not compatible, follow the rest of the steps using ODIN, and you'll have root. If you've rooted a Samsung device before this should not be difficult for you.
STAYING STOCK and safe.
Over the years, the only two reasons I would root my Android phone:
Get rid of ads
Hotspot
With the Note-8, you can modify the settings and get hotspot to work w/out rooting...........there's a thread out there for instructions.
I found an app that controls/eliminates the ads via VPN, runs in the background with very little battery drainage if any at all.
You can also download DnsChanger(Open Source) from the PlayStore and use these DNS Servers from AdGuard to block advertisements, tracking, and phishing globally on your phone.

Is rooting the note 8 still limiting to 80% charge?

Yes. That will always be a thing unless the bootloader gets unlocked.
that 80% thing definitely makes it a no go for me

There's no advantage to root unless you have a custom recovery. Also you don't need root to run custom ROMs, a custom recovery will do all you need, plus most ROMs come rooted.
Point is, I'd rather have a custom recovery over root. The custom recovery will fix a bootloop, flash ROMs, themes, apps and maybe one or two things I'm forgetting.
Lastly, I'm not seeing any custom recoveries for carrier locked Note 8s. Heck, unless I'm missing something, I'm seeing anything for unlocked ones.
