[Q] lg g2 or sony z1? can't decide! - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i wanna buy a new phone but it's really hard to choose between these monsters, lg g2 5.2 inch ips lcd seems to have higher quality but xperia z1 has Triluminos , g2 is more ergonomic, but xperia z1 have premium look( premium look is important for me) and waterproof, having sd slot is not a big deal for me, cuz lg g2 with 32 internal storage do the same for me. some people say lg g2 has better camera some says sony z1. well feel confused , any idea? whos the winner?

Camera isn't better, they may have a good software, but really in terms of hardware:
Sony:
Aperture size: Sony F2.0 LG F2.4
Focal length (35mm equivalent): Sony 27mm LG 29mm
Camera sensor size: Sony 1/2.3" LG 1/3.06"

As you can see the difference is huge whatever people say on the latest sony fw, camera is very good and in future upgrades can only be much better.
Look and Feel and premium, mmm, LG white is nice and look a bit premium, the black one seems a plastic bag. Z1 looks more premium than an iphone, still have some issues like no oleophobic screen.
Is a difficult decision, I know I was in the middle too, but since the amount of money is quite big I thought that in the Z1: 20mp camera + Unibody is more justified.

no, it does not. i think thats a huge disadvantage.

i was torn between these 2 phones.
Waterproofing, SD Card is a big plus to me
also had 2 LG Phones in the past and both needed the batteries replacing within 1 year so an LG phone with a fixed battery is a big NO NO for me.

in my opinion z1 is better it is water proof and anti dust and support micro sd card up to 64 GB.

I actually own both phones (was facing the same choice) and after a long time of using them both I think I'm going with the Z1...
The G2 has a great (and imo better) screen, the formfactor is perfect and has a great camera during day. Battery is amazing and wifi/data connection strength beats the Z1. But it just doesn't have the 'wow' factor for me... I also have the 16GB version (only one available in my country) which is not great... Also, LG support has never been to great in the past to say the least.
The LG camera is pretty good, but gets worse quickly with less light. While still photos will be fine (if you don't zoom in to much) it will be a lot slower and struggle to get the light in.
The Z1 in the end has the better overall camera imo, and I hope it improves with future updates. Larger storage (+microsd) and a more premium/special feel. So, still not completely convinced, I think in the end I prefer the Z1 more... Especially if premium look and water resistance are important I guess the Z1 is the way to gol.
Both are great phones thoug,h, can't go wrong on either of them.

The Power button is on back, hmm no.

No issue at all, and you can simply doubletap the screen to wake the phone...

Unless you can source the Korean version. That has extSD support.

I agree with the fact that it has a premium feel, and I'm a satisfied owner of one for 3 days now. My only complaint is the screen compared to any other smartphone, as well as there's this rattling sound when you tap certain parts of its body. Yes it seems to be coming from the camera and I know most phones have a rattling sound coming from the camera optics, but I dont think it should be audible when just tapping the phone on certain parts.

Xperia Z1 is much better than LG G2. I sold both LG G2 and Nexus 5 and got Xperia Z1.

my only, and i mean only slight disapointment at this device is the screen, it washes out when viewing from large angles, which is negligble most of the times, unless you're for somereason trying to watch what someone else is doing on your phone while he's far from you.
other than that it's absolutly perfect, water resistent, very fast and snappy, battery lasts a day and sometimes two, volume is descent and camera is great once you figure out how to take goodnight shots.
i don't find the 8GB internal to be too small, i have a lot of apps installed including a few big games, for multimedia i just have my 16GB sd card.
Never get lags

For me the main problem is not to be able to use the Sd card for application storage.
Otherwise I m very happy with it.
Big screen but not too big.
Fast fast fast...
The front camera is not so good but do you use it often? Me once in 2 months...
The usb cover can get tricky sometimes but after a few week it become easier.
But why don't you wait a little more and buy a Z1s....
Not good at all
Because of:
1.Very little to No developer support for our device
2.Volume is very low
3.Probably no KitKat for our wonderful device
4.Camera is not nice,in any condition its just too grainy and zooming on a picture is pointless as it gets very bad
5.Shortage of accessories
6.Sony's service is very poor
7.No warranty on water proof.....
Etc.
Other than this the experience is great
Not on device but on android and a nicely designed phone.

lol kraken, go for a reading trip around the forum, most of what you wrote here is already discussed a solved...
1. almost every xz rom works on ZR with a little tweaking, you have miui and CM also, kikat will have to get to ZR if it gets to Z it's practicly the same, mybe a month later.
the camera is defenetly one of the better ones, night shots require to use manual mode to get better resaults, someone did comparison with galaxy s4 in the pictures thread and when done right quiality is the same.
shortage of accessories is also wrong, you have original sony dock and cheaper excellet docks on ebay, plenty of covers and screen procetors...
and about water warrenty?? no waterproff phone has a waterproofing warrenty, non from sony or the samsung galaxy active devices...

But if you know how to modify ROMs from Z or ZL to ZR
Please mod this one and upload it here cuz it's amazing

And also tell me an ultra noob friendly way to mod Z roms for Zr
For future use....
+ Great size
+ Good battery life
+ Software (lightly skinned, no TouchWiz crap here)
+ Build quality
+ Fast and snappy with no lag
+ Sony media apps are nice
+ STAMINA mode
+ Can use with a dock
+ IP58 certified waterproof and dust proof
+ Excellent camera with proper camera button
- Notification light is too dim and colour can't be changed
- Lack of accessories (can't even get a proper leather case)
- Port covers likely to get damaged with constant open and close action
- Soft keys (prefer Samsung home button)
- Screen is washed out and looks rubbish compared to AMOLED but it's not as bad as the reviews

[Q] Xperia Z1 vs. Z1s or should I wait for Z2?

Hi everyone,
So I am thinking of getting an Xperia phone, I am a huge Android fan, never used a Sony phone before and currently having a Galaxy S4. I am attracted to Xperia's configuration and wanting to giving it a try. However, I am not sure which one should I pick. Here are couples of questions I am having in mind. Maybe you all can help me decide. Thanks a bunch!!!!
1. Between Z1 and Z1s, which one I am better off with? I know there aren't much differences between them but if I was to go with Z1, will I get LTE 4G network with Tmobile since it is an unlocked phone? I really like the varieties of color choices and I love the purple version.
2. Between Z1 and Z2, since Z2 is coming out soon, should I just wait for it? However, I am hearing rumors that the Z2 won't be launching in the US for a while. Any insider scoops?
Thanks for all of your advice*
Definitely Z2.!

if you get a z1, it can't be from the sony store if you are in the us. you need to get the 6903 6906 or 6943 to get t-mobile lte.
the z1s from tmobile also has no root and is more than likely not an unlockable bootloader..
2. IMHO the only think the z2 has is that 120fps video recording. its pretty much a tweaked z1. would not spend the money on it as it will probably be more than $600 at launch.
wait for the z2 release which is supposed to be soon and it should drop the price of the z1

The z2 also has better screen, dual front facing stereo speakers and 3gb of ram. And a newer chipset s801 a faster version of s800.If I have money to spend , I'd get the z2. If I'm on tight budget or saving money, i'd get the z1 or maybe lg g2 haha..

i don't like front speakers since i keep the phone screen against leg, and i know alot of people put their phone face down. so that's mostly preference (phone speakers suck anyways and i rather use headphones) botton or side speakers are harder to have muffled in pockets, etc than front speakers.
kickstand case = front speakers
naked phone = bottom or front (since you are holding it)
and the viewing angles aren't really an issue when using a phone, if you really need such high viewing angles get a phone with an ips display (at those angles either screen looks bad trying to use it, nexus 4,5 and xperia z. no idea how people complain about it)
ram is nice, i'm fine with 2gb. slightly faster s800. doubt the ram and slight performance increase will be worth the price difference.
the only thing that'll really be different between the two is no 120fps on the z1 (for now)
i doubt you'll notice the cpu in games or everyday use, file transfers might be quicker. if you watch videos on your phone with multiple people you might get a better experience, if you are on stock based fw it hopefully won't hog all the ram for no reason (tmo z, sometimes get a launcher redraw, never did on my nex 4. phones are pretty much the same except sony fw hogs ram with nothing running so those 3gb are probably not all that great when you can skip the bloated sony base on the z1 and the z2 might be SOL for awhile and atleast the z to z1 jump was a big difference soc wise).
the z and z1 only do 30fps video recording which isn't as nice as 60 or 120fps for fast moving things (cars, rc things, etc).
pretty much the only 2 (maybe 3) things that will make a big-ish difference in using day to day depending if you actually do any of this with your phone very often are (not in order of easiest to notice)
the front facing speakers
120/60fps video
better viewing angles
oh, that higher cost too
i'd actually record things with my phone if it did 60/120fps.
currently i don't recommend those who've asked if they should get a z1s ($600 and tmobile, new z1 is 510 online and the only z1s's being bought new on ebay are selling for less than a used z1. besides that it feels cheap because plastic bezel (cheap abs glossy plastic. not a nice fiber reinforced).
z2 comes out and the z1 should hopefully go for 450 new or less (which would make the z2 even less of a good idea since it'll have a lower bang for buck than the z1 since it's just a z1+ 2.2-2.3ghz ~100mhz increase in fsb, changed the panel to adress an issue (that is probably due to the ASF which i removed since the glass can still crack, and it's easily scratched plastic) 2-3gb ram.
moved speaker can be a plus
software for the camera may move to the z1
i'm kinda ranting so i'll stop
but just like cars or other electronics newer doesn't guarantee it's better or worth it, only that it is newer and "shinier"

[Q] Sony Xperia Z1 Or LG G2?

I have been using Xperia z1 past 5 months....i m getting a chance to exchange it with LG G2....So m in a big confusion..shud i or not?
i look for Battery backup, gestures, Regular updates and non heating device...wat do u think guys?
No.
There's a big trade off: unless you live in Asia, it's likely that you're going to be offered the 16gb version of the G2. No expandable storage.
This is, and always will be, the biggest issue I have with the Western G2 - 16GB is WAAAAAY too small for storage - it's bad enough that the Z1 only has 16GB for Apps but 16GB for Apps AND Content?
No, no, no.
Stick with the Z1.
(P.S. The G2 has a terrifying amount of post production on it's photographs - while nice when zoomed out, the camera has nothing on the Z1's, especially post KitKat).
LG G pro 2
LG G PRO 2 is better than G2..
But..
Z1 still be my best collection ever..

The Lg G2 is 32 gd version...
If you have nothing against the plastic back, lack of SD card and LG ui then you might be happy with the trade
However the Z1 was ~600 euro at release while the g2 only costed ~420 euro, so keep that in mind

G2 - screen quality, screen size to phone size ratio
Z1 - build quality/materials, expandable storage, water resistance
rest is pretty much the same, choose whats important to you.

try it and see,
the main drawbacks for the G2 are,
* Plastic build
* Slightly thicker
* No water proofing/dust resistance
* Cluttered and sometimes laggy UI
The UI issues may have been resolved with Kitkat update, you'll have to try and see if you can live with those compromises above.
regards
In my opinion the Z1 is the better phone overall
But the G2 has some key advantages, a much better screen and a 32GB option which should be a must nowdays

Z1, can you abuse waterproof?

Hello
Would i be able to freely take pictures underwater with this cellphone or is there a certain limit of times it can dive underwater?
is it stil worth buying it in 2014 for 375 bucks?
Is it better than the g2?
I used my phone to take picture this summer every day for about half hour a day. I even recorded few videos per day.
My friend uploaded one to youtube so i will share you here.

Z1 is old model now and I prefer you to get the Z2 instead or the latest Z3 if you have enough budget
It is able to take photos or videos underwater by using the volume up/down or camera button
You can use it as many times as you want

Yes the Z1 have the scratch film that removes the Sony logo if you remove it.I'm not sure about it as I use the Z only.Simply buy a case and cover so that it won't be scratched.
Comparing to the LG G2,it has 5.2" IPS display while Z1 is 5.0" TFT display.Other than that, all specs are exactly same.Of course,Z1 has the dust and waterproof IP rating...
So it depends on which brand you are looking for and try to get a hands on on both devices.

It is absolutely worth buying! Great original rom(my first phone without a custom rom), great dev options(damn, I just love Flashtool!), waterproof, great camera(manual or with Xposed), physical camera button, great specs and I also love the design! I always root my phones(first thing I do after a proper charge) and had ghosttouches! Was easy to fix, just changed the clearpad settings(root is needed because clearpad is a system file)! Only the speaker disappoints me!

It is in my hands finally.
I've never seen such an awesome smartphone ever, and also i don't know if it is because i got the "newest" version, but the viewing angles are just great, i can actually see everything looking at an angle of about 140 degrees.
the phone feels so good, but the speaker is in a bad place, you cover it up while gaming, it heats up quite a lot when gaming but that was to be expected.
i still haven't risked placing it underwater thou, a lot of complaints of malfunction after doing that.

[Q] Do i buy a z3 compact? Or better a LG G2?

Hello,
I am Daniel, from Argentina, and I am doubting on buying a LG G2 or a Z3 Compact.
I know they are quite diferent (z3 is from 2014 and G2 is from 2013), but Snapdragon 800 or 801 does not make difference to me.
My first choice is Z3 compact for its battery, but is that good? Because someone talks about 5 hours screen, other of 8 hours, so, is good or G2's battery is better?
Is there any con of Z3C? I have read about glass cracking by itself, i should worry about that? Is there other con?
Prices here are, LG G2 is 500uss and z3 700uss. Which one i pick??
Thanks and sorry for my english

Pricey first of all first of answering
The problem of waiting is that i am from Argentina, and here we are like Cuba or Venezuela and our president block imports. So smartphones come late, and as you see expensive.
If i wait for z4 compact, here is reaching on march luckily and very expensive. Also i heard that z4 compact will have 1080p so i think that is going to reduce battery endurance that is what matters me.
Just suck it up and go for z3c u wont regret it
Do you have any knowledge, experience or opinion of LG and Sony's respective versions of Android, as that might be a factor for you too.
I have both phones and although the G2 is still a fine phone with regard to hardware, I personally disliked LG's software. The good news is if you are not afraid to root there is a strong community here on XDA and Lollipop is already available through CM 12 and other custom roms. LG's own official version of 5.0 should reach the G2 early next year, so you will get the sanctioned update soon.
The Z3c wins out over the G2 for me through it's better form factor and also support for external storage. I love both the back buttons and the resultant ultra thin bezels on the G2 but the Z3c is pretty much the perfect size for my tastes. I do have Google Music locker but prefer to have most of my music and other media stored locally, which I can do on my 128GB sd card. I am not sure if storage capacity is important to you - if it is you should definitely look at the Z3c, or maybe a cheaper phone with a SD card slot.
I believe the battery life is slightly better on the Z3c vs the G2, but that's just with my usage patterns, YMMV. Both have strong battery life in general and most reviews I've read have seen them both compare well to rivals like the M8 or SGS5.
I don't doubt those people who have suffered spontaneous glass cracking but I do believe it to be a tiny minority versus those who like me have had no issues to date.
The key imo for your decision is the price differential. I think that assuming the $200 difference between the phones is without any special discount to either, the G2 is better value for money. In isolation I definitely would take the Z3c over the G2, but if you can get the G2 for that much cheaper I would go with that.
These are my two favorite android phones. The LG G2 has a triple threat for themes: If you like LG's heavy theme, that's the stock theme. If you want something more minimalistic but not stock, there are roms based on the LG G3 revisions. If you like AOSP, it's similarity with the Nexus 5 means it will usually have things ported quickly. If a US version only had microSD, it would be the perfect phone. LG, having the Nexus phone assignment for two years, grew big in their android phone sales and support.
In the $175-250 USD Range (ebay selling prices of US LG G2s), there is no better value for the money as the snapdragon 800 is very similiar to the 801 and the screen/body ratio is great (and it's not 5.5").
The Z3 is the android phone we've been waiting for, putting best in class performance in a small-phone package. My biggest issues with the phone are the glass back (solved with a 1.29 case) and the screen/weight ratio. Sony's anti-root policy is such that unlocking the boot-loader disables camera algos, ps4 and screen mirroring capability.
Battery life on both phones is very good, as both phones have large batteries. The camera's on both phones are very good. The screens are very good on both phones. The sound is better on the sony.
On an economic level, it's hard to recommend paying anywhere near retail for an android phone so close to the CES/MWC 2015 as Snapdragon 810s may do to our phones what the Snapdragon 800/801 did to the Snapdragon 600 (remember the last time a phone even used a SD 600).

Thanks rp3, do you think Sony is launching a z4 compact on CES/MWC 2015? Or will be only z4 with no compact version as z2?
You may be surprised, but G2 wins
Hi DanielGatti, since your criteria is the battery life, Z3 Compact has slightly better battery life than G2. But that's it actually. I'm using Nexus 5 (over a year now), G2 (July 2014) and Xperia Z3C (end of Oct 2014) at the moment and all I can say the only thing I like with Xperia Z3C is that it's fit in the hand. So it's very comfortable to hold. Actually no, because the glass back is very slippery in the hand. But G2's bigger screen is much more compelling.
The thing is, G2's still stuck with KitKat 4.2, so some apps may crash regularly (one of them is mobileVoIP I often use). But if you ask me what is my favourite: Nexus 5 is still the king (shame that LG doesn't put the same battery capacity in it that it built in G2!).
I have read rumors of a Z4C. They are just that. I'd say 50/50 that sony launches one and 75/25 that someone else launches a high-end sub 5" phone. My reason is this: the iphone 6 and 6+ launch means every android maker needs to compete on the high end with 4, 4.7 and 5.5 standard bearer (and beat them on either performance, weight or screen/body). The HTC rumors of a 5' flagship (and the samsung Galaxy Alpha starting a new design language) make it more likely that sub 5" phones will have better than a snapdragon 410 next year.

Is it sure there'll be a compact version?

Is G2 display better than Z3C display???? {obviusly not having on count the size, i am talking about nits and other technical stuff}
According to their GSM Arena reviews, the Z3 Compact is 10% brighter at full brightnes but 30% less contrast. The Z3C also has 30% better sunlight visability contrast. Having those two phones in hand now (just bought a LG G2 and listing Z3c on swappa), I wouldn't disagree with the indoors ratings (I am rarely outside during sunlight looking at my phone screen).

I'm not competent enough to talk about nits and other technical stuff. But for me as user it's enough to put the device side by side and see which one looks better. G2's screen is better because it looks gorgeous with its bigger size, while everything looks tiny on Z3C's screen. Z3C display also looks too dark and cold. You have to play with the settings in order to find the best for you.
I had an LG G2 on Verizon in the US and switched to a Z3 Compact on T-Mobile. Comparing the two for you, I'd go with the LG G2 because it's less expensive and performs basically identically. If you want a smaller phone, go for the Z3 Compact.
size matters... a lot!
I think first and foremost you need to decide what size you prefer.
The G2 is fantastic. I liked it better than the Galaxy S4/S5 and Nexus 5. But it was too big for me, along with the others I mentioned. My Z3c is perfect!
Once you decide on size, then you pick one or the other, whichever is closer, OR, compare similar size phones and make your decision even harder!
I also wanted to decide so I bought both.
Well, since difference in money was more or less U$S275 i went with LG G2, because as they said, differences were not very important.
Also SnapDragon 810 is about to come and may be it will a huge change, so i'll want a z4 compact, and has no sense buy a z3 compact now, it was a waste of money.
Thanks to everyone

You're basing your "what's better" on looks. So, in that sense, Beats by Dre are better than a pair of ATH-ADG1s?
Sure, it might look bigger and it's easier to see, but that's nowhere near being better. There's still how the colors look, how much power it drains, contrast, sunlight visibility etc. If the OP was making his comparison purely based on screen size, he would either be considering getting the Z3 would had been on his way to the store to get a G2 instead of opening the thread.
@DanielGatti: The 810 doesn't bring anything big in terms of performance, except maybe the new GPU (now with a flashy new number). But the difference won't be visible going from a Z3C to a Z4C if rumors are to be believed though because of the increased resolution (1080 vs 720).
The G2 should be getting OEM updates for at least one more year as it basically uses the same chipset as some other 2014 devices. After that, it'll have a long life here on the Forums. At this point, quite the opposite could be said about the Z3C (though that may change anytime).
I came from g2 to z3c and i love the compact. G2 is not a bad phone but at least it was to big for me

Hello,
I am Daniel, from Argentina, and I am doubting on buying a LG G2 or a Z3 Compact.
Daniel

As someone who came from the G2 and now has the Z3c I feel like I can be some help.
First of all i will start by saying I love the Z3c, its a great phone, really attractive, and the battery is great.
But the G2 was and is still the best phone I've ever had.
It was perfect in my opinion in ever front, its powerful, has a huge battery, is extremely comfortable in hand, has a great screen, and the ROM community is huge and there are a lot of amazing roms available. (It is basically an better Nexus 5) Something the Z3 is unfortunately completely missing. Plus I LOVED the back button placement, felt very natural, and with the tap to wake you don't have to use them if you don't like. After having the z3c for a few months I think that the G2's size / screen ratio is perfect for me. (The only reason I did't get the G3 was because it's so big).
If you can get the G2 for a good price I can't see any reason why you shouldn't go with it. I
It's a great phone. I wish I didn't lose it abroad or I would definitely would still be using it.
