So I recently got the Nokia Lumia 1020 after being an android user since day one. Rooted and everything
I have couple of issues and questions that have arise since then.
1. How can I change the search button to bring up google instead of bing? I have read that you have to change your language to Russia but I would not want to do that
2. With my Note 3, HTC one and other previous android devices, I was able to use maps with speech and use the FM radio on my deck together. Android would just mute the FM radio and give me the next direction.
With WP8, it seems like I have to select bluetooth source in order for speech to work, however I can no longer listen to the radio at the same time. Is there a fix/workaround for this?
3. NFC tags.. I recently bought a bunch.. however I noticed that you can't have the nfc tags to change the settings but just launch the settings app? So I would need 3 NFC tags to turn off BT, turn off wifi and enable gps? Seems..... any fix?

1: Basically not possible until we "root" the 1020. Maybe if a bootloader exploit is found. Otherwise, only devices sold in markets where Bing doesn't have much presence - such as Russia, I guess - support that option. You can install apps for other search engines, but the button is sort of "hard-coded" to the Bing app.
2: WP7 used the Headset mode of Bluetooth (Hands-Free Profile) for driving directions, but that was built into the OS. Apparently Here Drive can't or won't do that (I consider this a regression, since my car doesn't support the audio profile) so the car needs to be using BT audio (A2DP, I think) to give directions. However, as a work-around, you can of course play media *from the phone* and it should work fine (it will be muted while directions are spoken). Whether you use internally stored MP3s, streaming music from the built-in Xbox Music (formerly Zune Pass), one of many apps (such as Pandora), or the phone's built-in FM receiver (requires that headphone wires be connected, since that's what it uses as an antenna, but otherwise possible), you can have your music and directions both.
3: Yeah, for reasons of their own, Microsoft hasn't exposed any way for third-party developers to toggle various settings directly. With that said, though... There's basically no need to turn either BT or WiFi off; they draw extremely little power when not in use (and by default, WiFi turns off while the screen is off and there's no external power anyhow). As for GPS, unlike Android's incomprehensibly wasteful approach, on WP8 it is *always* inactive unless an app or OS feature is explicitly using it, so as long as you remember to close the navigation app when you're done with it, there's no need to manually turn off location services.

However with #2, I would like to have my USB that is plugged into my car deck AND driving directions at the same time. With android this is possible... but not with WP8
What? I must be misunderstanding you, because there's no problem at all with having USB plugged in while getting directions. Or did you mean you're getting the music off the USB (you said radio before, which the phone is capable of doing by itself) and hence the USB is a different input that the BT?
My usual approach in my car is cigarette lighter -> USB adapter -> phone -> ripping cable (I'd use BT if my car would do it for music) -> car stereo AUX port, and that works fine for getting both music and directions. Swap out the aux port and the ripping cable for Bluetooth and it will still work fine (as I've found when I had to rent cars).
That's correct, my deck has a Bluetooth source as well as a USB source.
I have to select Bluetooth source in order to get voice directions to the car speakers but if I select USB source the voice navigation no longer works
Yeah, that's a pain. Is there some reason you can't play your music/audiobooks/podcasts/whatever through the phone, though? Yeah, it's annoying to need to change what works, but on the plus side, it's all your media on one fewer device than you're using now.

Has anyone had experience of these?
I was looking at a blaupunkt hamburg car stereo and whilst I can always use USB or 3.5mm aux jack to connect with my kaiser, I would like, if possible, the full bluetooth experience - with the stereo playing music off my kaiser and handling calls as well. I know it will handle the calls part, but what about the music part?
I guess the Kaiser supports BT "headphones", but I wondered if it was possible for a car head unit to pull track listings via BT from a phone, select which track to play etc.
I would really like to be able to have TomTom on the kaiser screen and select what music I want via the car stereo's controls.
Is this possible via BT? I know this unit does that via USB, but I can't seem to work out if track selection is possible via BT. I spoke to some salesmen, but all they quoted at me was "It has Audio Streaming" - I looked that up, but all it said was you could skip track etc - I want to be able to browse playlists on the head unit as well as play, pause etc.
Does BT degrade the quality too much? Would I be better off using the USB port?
depends on if the car stereo supports Stereo over Bluetooth. Go to the bluetooth on your pda, click and hold on the paired stereo and if it gives you the option - you're good otherwise you may need to find another solution.
It's not just stereo over bluetooth (A2DP) I want, it's the ability to browse playlists via the bluetooth device
I don't know of any BT unit that supports playlist browsing -- as I understand it, the AVRCP profile that supports skip, rewind, etc. doesn't support playlists. AFAIK, there's no BT profile for that.
I have a JVC (BT1)unit that can control the music player and stream the music from the Kaiser ,browsing the songs is mot possible
OK, so hard wired it is then.
I am thinking now that maybe BT isn't so wise anyway, I have an active holder, so wires are not a problem really and wires don't cut out randomly or get interference.
Mind you, I just realised that for it to work over USB, the device has to present itself as a mass storage device, which I don't think pocketpc phones do, do they? You need activesync...
Does anyone know if it is possible to run an app on a pocketpc that makes it present itself as a standard usb mass storage device and not an activesync device?
my motorola a2dp bluetooth stereo headphones worked with my unit just fine - they had play/pause/next/prev/volume buttons that worked too - decent sound quality also

You don't necessarily need activesync for this, but you might try Softick Card Export or WM5torage (when someone gets it working on the Kaiser).
I tried the demo of Softick Card Export II and it works, there also appears to be one called WM5Storage on Modaco, but it won't let me download it, I think I need a subscription or something. What is the license on WM5Storage? Can someone send me a copy?
[Edit - heh, was writing this as you posted. So WM5Storage doesn't work on the Kaiser yet?]
This should provide the best possible audio quality - an error corrected usb link to the stereo and also the best functionality - the stereo can browse the phone so you can scroll through lists of your music on the stereo head unit whilst tomtom displays on the kaiser screen

One problem I see with this is that AFAIK, Card Export, when in use, prevents all other access to the card from your pda, therefore your maps on the card would not be accessible to TomTom while you are playing music via USB.

Does anybody know how I can change the order contacts are displayed on the screen of the car? After I have sync the Kaiser with the BT car device all cantacts were sorted first name / last name. I do want to change that?

You seem to be right on the money mate I got the stereo today, fitted it and got memory access violations when using tomtom and pulling tracks via USB
This is highly annoying, is it not technically possible to overcome this?
You could use smaller regional maps and store them in main memory?

Yeah, I could I suppose, but annoying - I paid for Western Europe and would like the whole thing on there all the time. You never know - you may go to a stag do, get drunk and wake up in France somewhere!
Persuing other angles at the mo - not got a word back from softick yet as to whether it is technically possible to access SD card via USB and phone at same time, and I have another thread exploring the possibility of an activesync to Mass Storage Device dongle.
We shall see.
I've got a Sony bluetooth unit and (MEX BT2500 or something) and use my Trinity for handsfree, TomTom and streaming music over Bluetooth - Kaiser turns up tomorrow but should be the same.
I use Coreplayer for music, it works great. You choose the music from the phone, but then you can skip tracks from the head unit. Sound quality is similar to using the aux port on the front - never had problems with interference or cutting out.
yeah, at the moment I just use the 3.5mm AUX input on the stereo and use pocket music.
I use "Double Launcher" to remap the internet explorer button - 1 press for tomtom, double press for pocket music - that way I can quickly switch between the two whilst driving by touch alone.
It's pretty good, but I would rather not have to take the map from the screen to select music, especially if you have a passenger who wants to browse available music. Plus the car head unit display is in big glowing letters which are easier to read at a distance. Also, it cuts down on a cable as the USB would cater for charge and audio.
Unfortunately the head unit only does audio for calls not audio streaming anyway, but I wasn't buying it for this as I figured bluetooth audio involved a lossy compression and so degraded quality - not an issue for phone calls but not the best for music, especially when it is already been through MP3 compression.
I got an answer from softick today, and it seems the limitation is imposed by their software. I have argued the case against the limitation, and they seem to be swaying towards giving something a go. Fingers crossed for a solution here.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead . .
But I am in the middle of purchasing a stereo for my car and want to be able to do a few things . .
1) More than anything i want to be able to stream my Iguidance or TomTom turn by turn directions over my stereo through bluetooth.
2) I want to be able to take calls while still having my directions being played. ( Ie. while driving and being told where to go, if I get a call it will silence the directions and the call will take over. )
3) I want to be able to switch from BT to CD or radio. So if say TomTom tells me, drive for 10 miles, I can switch to radio for a while so i can listen to music and then switch back after some time to get back on track with my directions. What would be even better is if it treated the directions just like a call and allowed me to listen to the radio or cds, and when TomTom decided to talk, it would mute or turn down the radio/cd and play TomTom over it for the moment of " In 2 miles, exit on the right ".
If this is not possible then it isn't really worth it to spend the extra $100 or so on a good headunit with bluetooth. please give me some info or ideas.
(On a side note, if I were to use a BT headset, and had tomtom running, would the commands for turn by turn directions be fed through my BT headset? And would I be able to take calls while still doing this? ) If yes, I may just end up getting a good BT headset and just a nice CD player because of cost.

Nexus 7 Head-unit Install
Hi all, long time reader, first time poster. I'm working on a Nexus 7 Car Head-unit install, and figured I would post my working through the install, hardware, software, and kinda just help all the tons of people I see out there who have the same idea, but just have no idea how to go about it.
This is ment to be half a tutorial (once everything is done) and half a brainstorming to give me idea's for things I haven't thought of or considered. I'll be coming back and updating this OP with pictures, and the build as it gets worked on.
Goals of the Install
I want to be able to run my entire car off the Nexus. I have already set up wifi tethering from my S3 to get internet into the Nexus, and thus open up a realm of possibilities. Necessary features are Nav, and Music. I rarely call from my car, but in car calling would be a nice feature to have as well. I also go out to the track ever now and again, and adding car stats (boost, RPM logging, acceleration, mapping) would be great. The biggest reason to do the install is that one the hardware is configured, you literally have a ultimately customizable setup that will take years to outdate.

Right now this is not a nessiacty as the hardware to do this could get very tricky. However I know I can read from the OBDII port with a bluetooth OBDII dongel and an app like Torque Lite. However I do own a tatrix cable, and am considering if it would be possible to go from the USB to the tablet, and find an app/write one what allows for the tablet to control the car in real time.

The Two Builds
There are two ways to go about this. The first would be the simple and easy way which is to hack together a charger wired to the power source of the car, and use that to keep the tablet charged. Then run a 3.5mm audio into the amp, and have sound run from there. There are a few issues with that. 1. There will be no volume control, as the Tablet's buttons will be part of the center console. I suppose I can run a controller to the amp, that will let me adjust volume. 2. This will not allow for the possibility of adding OBDII support.
The second option is to purchase a micro USB dock that does audio out. Hack it apart, and run the audio to the amp, and the power to the power. This would be necessary if I want to do a full USB ODBII connection (I believe, please tell me if I'm wrong), and would be much "cleaner" when it comes time to take the tablet out of the car for any reason (hardwire sync, parking in the "ghetto").
What I need Help with
Have any idea's. Tried something similar and have some tips. Have suggestions for apps, hardware configurations I haven't listed, or just generally want to say "sick man". Please let me know. I would love to have some people who are also interested in doing this join in on my build, and we can work together to eliminate any issues to make tablet installs easier. I will be coming back and updating this OP throughout the entire process so please look for updates!

I'd like do do this in the future... I hope someone comes out with a custom set of apps that make this really cool and easy... maybe even a custom ROM.
Basically what I'd want out of this is:
Auto-on with power. Auto off after 10 minutes of no power. FM radio tuner. Maybe the ability to connect a rear-view camera (wifi?). Bluetooth OBDII would be good enough for me.
I'd also appreciate the ability to connect to at least one camera and use it as a DVR, but I think that it would probably be beyond feasibility with the Nexus 7...
What I really want to see is the ability for the Nexus to be a full Bluetooth head unit. I want it to pair with my phone for both internet (already do this, works great) and have it act as a headset essentially. This is the part that appears to not exist anywhere. The ability for the Android Tablet to act as a hands free device. I mean if a car stereo can fully integrate with your phone read your address book, start and answer calls hands free, stream music, everything from your phone then why the heck not the tablet! Someone needs to write the BT stack that can handle that. Apparently it doesn't exist for android. It exists for Windows, but not Android. That is just wrong. Are there any car stereo head units running Android as their OS? If so can someone dump their rom so we can see what all it can do for a project like this?

Does anyone know of a micro USB dock/cable that then splits to power, usb, and audio? I know of one's that will do 2 of the three, but nothing that does all three. Maybe just a USB and power one, and run the audio straight out of the 3.5mm on the N7.

Hello, I'm considering permanently mounting a nexus 7 in my car. It seems like the perfect in car device.
With this in mind I have updated my CarHome Ultra app to better accommodate the Nexus 7 screen. I will be posting a new video soon showing it running on the 7.
I've looked at doing this as well, I've always been prevented by the issue of the FM radio. I use the car a lot in places where I get no or poor connection via the phone, but the radio works fine, so loosing it would not be an option as I use the FM radio quite alot.
I've been trying to figure out away to control an FM radio via the Nexus so if anyone out there has any info it would be greatly appreciated.

Load a hand full of mp3s on the device. Then use Tasker to switch to switch to your favorite music player when reception is bad

I am actually currently doing a very similar project with a Nexus 7 and my Nissan 350z
I am planning on installing the Nexus 7 inside my dash (to replace sat nav dash)
HOWEVER
what about routing the power button on the tablet? Because If you cant access the power button the tablet will only get power when the car is on and if you dont use the car for a day or two the tablets battery would go flat and next time you turn on the car the tablet would go into charging mode (screen with charging battery only) and not boot up into android jelly bean.
Theres 2 potential solutions:
1. Open the tablet and wire the power button to a custom one, however on opening it I have found the button is actually a physical push press button and cannot be wired.
2. There is potential to change a file on the android system to tell the tablet to boot up when a charger is plugged in, check these threads:

Despite working in the car industry and loving gadgets and mod-ing...I haven't really seen what people are up to these days in terms of car mods. The Nexus 7 makes so much sense and looks great!

The only work round I seem to have found atm though far from perfect is this

it allows you to to 'cut in' the audio stream, but (can't fins the tread now will keep looking) the guy who was playing round with this was having audio issues.

before my mind starts melting again;
How I plan to implement the tablet is to use tasker to wake the tablet when power is supplied then shut of down after, if I disable all kinds of connectivity when tablet shuts down then reactivates when it wakes up everything should run smoothly. Power will be cut because I'll wire in the ignition live, like you do in a stereo anyway, an this shouldn't put a drain on my battery to much, an if the dash build is good it shouldn't be too much of an issue extracting the tablet to hard boot anyway.

Another way would be to install a direct in-line volume control as suggested in other threads, and put in an external DAC or hardwired EQ.

I recently installed a new head unit in my car, Kenwood DDX470, which I believe is compatible with the revolution. The phones bluetooth connects and allows the track controls to control music, both on spotify and all access. I switched from spotify to all access because there was a 4 steps process that had to be followed in order to successfully sync the bluetooth, and because I heard that spotify was not necessarily very compatible with android devices, and because I heard that all access might show the track information once linked up. I'm pretty sure the phone has the ability to transmit metadata, track info, because it does so no problem with music stored on the device, but unfortunately it does not do so when streaming through all access or spotify.
I saw that there is a link to install a 3rd party app for the samsung SG3 and tab but it didn't work for my phone. I've talked to all access support, lg support, best buy, and verizon, and there appears to be no solution. I know that transmitting metadata is possible while streaming, since my brother is able to transmit this information on his iphone for both music streaming subscriptions. I'm, assuming this has something to do with the blue tooth stack of the phone, but I really don't know. Any insight into this problem would be great. I travel a lot for work and am a bit of an audiophile and this is the last problem I am having getting the system linked up properly. Hopefully one of the genius' at xda will have a solution. I saw that there is a link to install a 3rd party app for the samsung SG3 and tab but it didn't work for my phone. I've talked to all access support, lg support, best buy, and verizon, and there appears to be no solution. I know that transmitting metadata is possible while streaming, since my brother is able to transmit this information on his iphone for both music streaming subscriptions. I'm, assuming this has something to do with the blue tooth stack of the phone, but I really don't know. Any insight into this problem would be great. I travel a lot for work and am a bit of an audiophile and this is the last problem I am having getting the system linked up properly. Hopefully one of the genius' at xda will have a solution. First off, the iphone is a whole other animal when it comes to car audio. You cannot compare what you do with an apple product in your car to any other device. Period. Now, second, I have never been able to get meta data to show through bt on the revo. I have had this phone for 2 christmas's and can't recall ever seeing meta data displayed.
Pandora and Spotify work absolutely flawless on my wifes jvc w/o metadata. You could try and search the playstore for a manufacturer app for the radio. I know pioneer, jvc, sony have them. See if that helps. But most likely, you will have to upgrade your phone to get that to work.
I've been a car audio installer for over 10 yrs and android is the blacksheep of the car audio world. Now, the pioneer app radio, through hdmi, works flawlessly with the revo. You can even get screen mirroring to out put the revo's display to your other monitors if you have them. :victory:

I'm thinking about buying a new car equipped with android auto. This car comes with an SD card slot where you can store music to use with the regular infotainment system. I was wondering if that SD card can also be accessed from android auto? I currently have a 16 GB Nexus 5X so it would be nice if I could use the SD card in the car, while driving.
I'm asking here because I'm sure the sales people don't even know what android auto is, so I don't really trust them.

My car stereo (Pioneer AVIC-F77DAB) has an SD card slot and I can't access it through android auto. I have to go into the stereos main screen to access music/video from SD card. Hope this helps

AA has no way at present to play audio sourced from the headunit, whether CDs, SDCard or AM/FM/HD/Sat etc.
Maybe in some future release 1-3 years from now.
There are strings within the AA code indicating Google might be experimenting with this. But it's in Googles interest to have us using Google Play Music. (Though deals with auto OEMs to share car data with Google could shift that interest.)

* Share the SD content using DLNA over the WiFi. Typically, you mobile and your HU can be connected by WiFi, additionally to AA USB connection. On this wireless network you can use any PLAYER App compatible with AA that can play from DLNA sources... in this case the HU.
I found this solution quite complex but viable... I do something similar in my VW.

Hmm, OK. But a bit complicated and potentially fragile I think.
I am not aware of any aftermarket AA HU that supports Wifi, never mind DLNA on top.
I presume your VW HU does, but I'm not sure about others.
My first thought was using flash USB connected to the phone, but I think it goes the wrong direction to use a hub to share the USB needed for AA. In theory AA over Wifi (or USB hub'd ethernet ?) could free up the USB, but it's not clear that Google will support AA over IP officially any time soon.

Well, it's kind of a no-brainer that people would want to listen to FM radio and use navigation at the same time. Same goes for an SD card or CD you might have in the car. As it is I'm leaning towards buying a cheaper car model and just using a mount for the phone when I need it. Especially since I have no guarantee that if Google does implement this in the future, it will work with my car.
This guy has a mode button on his device that allows him to switch between Android Auto and his normal infotainment system. That's at least an option, but I'm not sure if it works the same on the one that comes with VW cars.

That is a standard Pioneer AA HU feature. I would have thought other HUs can do the same, but maybe some don't.

My negative reply was about not being able to control FM and other HU sourced audio from the Android Auto screen UI.
Pioneer HUs (at least) allow you to start FM (or whatever), then start AA and FM will continue playing. FM will pause or drop volume when using AA navigation, so that's a crude form of basic "integration".
But you have to leave the AA UI in order to deal with FM etc on the HU screen (buttons might work, I've never actually tried this.)
So there is no seamless integration that allows you to control FM etc on the HU screen while staying within the AA UI. And most of us find it a bit jarring to switch between UIs, so we try to stay within one UI, which effectively means the AA UI.
It may be a "no brainer" that we all want seamless integration, but that doesn't mean that Google will support it.
Google music services compete with FM radio. This is why Google has never supported FM on Nexus devices. Google also killed attempts to create standard FM radio APIs for Android (while pretending to support them).
Basically, Google wants us to use Google Play Music from within AA and purposely makes it difficult to access FM/HD/CD/etc... in a seamless manner.
Yah, I have a feeling that most HUs have AA as just another app of sorts instead of AA taking over completely. That was my impression because ever review only really shows the features of AA, not how you would use it day to day. And I get what you're saying about the radio but I think cars are a bit different: the people who listen to the radio on their phone have usually been a minority, while almost everyone uses it in the car. In any case, if AA doesn't take over completely I see no reason for them or the car companies to integrate other car functions into AA.

After I upgraded my Nexus 6 to LOS 18.1, I discovered that Android Auto is included in the necessary package MindTheGapps. I am able to use AA via USB cable in my car (Hyunday i10/2017) and I am beginning to like it. Controlling the music player is so much better in the car's big screen!
I tried to establish a wireless connection using Bluetooth, because the AA app on my phone offers that option, but I can not make that connection, and I am beginning to think I might have a problem of understanding this technique. So I would appreciate a bit of help and explanation here.
Without the cable, just using BT, I am able to select people in the address book and make phone calls. The control buttons on the steering wheel also working perfectly: take calls, hang up, volume control. I guess this is some sort of typical old school free hand phone call protocol.
Also, when on BT, I get minimum control over the phone's music player with the steering wheel buttons, *after* I started the player on the phone's screen: next/previous track, volume control.
When I plug in the USB cable, AA starts and I get full control over the music player using my car's entertainmane screen: I can dig around in artists and albums list, and I can do any thing I can do on the phone's screen.
As said before: the AA app belonging to the MtG package offers to connect AA through BT, and I very much would like a galvanic separation between my car and my phone. But I can not make it work that way.
So, my question is: am I on the wrong track there? Does AA over BT work at all? Or do I need to make a wifi connection? What conditions need to be fitted on the phone, the LOS version, the GAPSS version and the car?

Wireless AA uses WiFi, you can not do AA with just BT. Your car does not support Wireless AA. You can connect via USB and use AA (it will use BT, too), or you can connect wireless with just BT, without AA.

I was totally confused there, because the AA app in LOS offers wireless connection to the car using BT. If I am getting it right now, that option only applies to streaming phone calls and music to the car.
Wouldn't it be better to label that option otherwise?
