[How to] root - HTC First

After doing it my self, ive made a simple and easy (with pictures) guide
http://argue4android.blogspot.com/2013/12/how-to-root-htc-first_11.html

did you solve your problem yet ? they have a method of rooting around these threads, ill see if i can find it for you
step 1: did you unlock your bootloader through htcdev ? htcdev has a step by step thing to show you how to unlock your bootloader, oh and when you choose which device just click the last option which should be something like "all supported" or whatever.
step 2: flash a custom recovery like TWRP , heres a link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241782 , once you're in twrp when you attempt to leave it should give in option to flash supersu (or whatever its called) *ALSO TWRP IS KINDA BUGGY JUST LEAVE THE PHONE ALONE FOR LIKE 15 SECONDS SO IT TIMES OUT, IT WILL FIX ANY GRAPHICAL GLITCHES*
step 3: at this point you should have supersu (or whatever its called) but you can't make system changes due to the phone being S-ON so you wanna get S-OFF next.... *WORK IN PROGRESS* (im not home at the moment but i started this so you atleast can get somewhere)

um no i dont quite get it...i understand the boot loader thing, but what happens in the process? any precautions needed?
then...recovery...how does TWRP work? same as CWM? Which one should i use? Which one is the safest?
what is S-ON and S-OFF ?
Screenshots would be great
its so much simpler on my old lg...just hook up to pc, hit root, then download cwm app, install recovery through that, then flash. HERE its so complicated...time to learn some new stuff eh?

the unlock bootloader thing is pretty safe its just a command you run while your phone is in bootloader just make sure you have adb and fastboot ill see if i can get you some pictues and screenshots in the meantime
by the way most htc phones go through this process haha, so yeah i guess it is time to learn

unlocking bootloader instructions:
1) Make sure to have adb and fastboot, oh and the htc drivers
here are some standalone adb and fastboot if you need it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42407269
here are the htc drivers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2217396
2) Head to the htcdev website, sign in or register and somewhere on the homepage it should show an option to "Unlock Bootloader"
heres some screenshots and such:
HTCDev Homescreen:http://i.imgur.com/dXHfiPF.png
After clicking unlock bootloader option: http://i.imgur.com/G753Ou7.jpg
Make sure to pick this under which device: http://i.imgur.com/f8kiOBf.png
i just realized this is alot of work to make a guide so heres a link if i lose you in my lazy guide below :good: http://technosamigos.com/unlock-bootloaders-htc-first-facebook-home-phone/
Quick Lazy Guide
do as above , then htc will send you an email to the email you registered with attached with a file called "unlock.bin" put that file into the folder that you have the adb and fastboot, at that point you can then turn your htc first off and then enter bootloader by holding down power button and volume down while the phone is off and you can keep holding both buttons intill you reach the white bootloader screen, once in bootloader plug it into the computer then press the power button on the fastboot option, it should show fastboot in red and be detected since you should have installed the htc drivers by now, then hold SHIFT while right clicking somewhere in the folder and click the option in the context menu to "open a command promt here" at that point you're gonna run the command: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin .... then after that you should see THIS: http://i.imgur.com/G5FxYSZ.png , press volume up till you highlight yes and press the power button , BOOM YOU HAVE UNLOCKED BOOTLOADER WOOOOOOOOO PARTY PARTY PARTY
BOOTLOADER LOOKS LIKE THIS: http://i.imgur.com/rJ3Vn5w.jpg
---------- Post added at 06:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:03 PM ----------
Now the recovery
now that the bootloader is unlocked you can then restart the phone and then go back into bootloader to flash a recovery, you can do either but i prefer twrp since it allows you to flash supersu before you restart your phone.
here are links to:
TWRP: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241782 GIVES AN OPTION TO FLASH SUPERSU BEFORE YOU RESTART PHONE
please remember that twrp has graphical issues that can be fixed once the screen times out in however many seconds
CWM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2241777 THE CWM THREAD SHOWS HOW TO GET ROOT BY FLASHING SUPERSU ZIP

Now to get S-OFF
there are two methods, Moonshine and RumRunner. both have already good guides which are the websites, try moonshine but if it doesn't work try rumrunner.
Moonshine: http://moonshine.io/
Rumrunner: http://rumrunner.us/
like i said try moonshine, but for me moonshine didnt work so i had to use rumrunner, and after i used rumrunner i had S-off but my phone kept bootlooping, MY SOLUTION (saying this because there are many and i cannot promise that it will work for you) was to RE-LOCK the bootloader (by running the command fastboot oem lock or something like that i will find out later)after obtaining S-OFF (you can verify if you have S-ON or S-OFF through the bootloader should say it somewhere near the top, so it sounds crazy but you can still do all functions after the bootloader is locked you can still flash roms and access custom recovery and everything, the stock rom just responds bad to having S-OFF and unlocked bootloaders for some including me.

I am an extremely lazy person if you haven't noticed, you should feel honored to have me make you a half-assed personal guide with few photos here and there lol i kid i kid.

wow...that makes alot...and i mean hell of alot more sense now! nice job with the explanation...
i figured out the bootloader portion...and heading on to recovery...but usualy i do this one day at a time...like let it run in its "new state" for a while before doing anything...dont want to overload a brand spankn new device eh?
now questions...specificaly
1. what is "standalone adb and fastboot" in step number one?
2. how do you navigate in the boot loader? and etc?
3. i still dont quite get how to do recovery - HOW do i do these...i understand i need to do all that below VVV but HOW
3a. Boot into HBOOT then Fastboot
3b. Erase cache from fastboot before flashing recovery. Use command "fastboot erase cache"
3c. From fastboot. Use command "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
4. what is S OFF??????
5. and finaly...how do i flash everything that needs to be flashed, since i dont have a recovery, in fastboot or what ever?
as you noticed...i think HTC has over done the whole security ****...the phones should just come pre rooted.

1. adb and fast boot are the programs you need before you root so your computer will detect your phone. So in simpler terms before you even try to root you should have android sdk manager installed on your computer and everything up to date.
Here's are the fastboot and adb files.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/jqdt4mq0t1ai251/fastboot adb.rar
Once you download those, you're gonna make a folder called Android in your C: drive or whatever your main drive is and place those files in there.
The folder should look like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
The android-sdk-windows folder is where you should put all of your SDK/sdk manager files.
Once you're done with that, you'll have to make a folder called fastboot on the C: drive also but to make your life easier I'll just upload mines, so you just have to place it on the C drive.
fastboot:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/j2zsnjbeitiy3du/fastboot.rar
Here's how your drive should look when done.
Now back to your questions, to enter boot loader mode, you hold down the power key with the volume down rocker until you enter the white screen with all the options.
And then to fast boot you just make sure the option is high lighted and press the power button.
The volume buttons are used to navigate and the power button is used to select btw.
And to do recovery is simple, once you are in fast boot it should say fastboot usb on the screen some where from there you open up CMD and type the command
cd c:\fastboot
and then press enter and then you enter the command
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
If you're using the files I uploaded everything should go smoothly I already put TWRP recovery in the folder.
Once the recovery is down flashing you go back to the boot loader screen jusy by pressing it and then go down to recovery and wala you're rooted, TWRP automatically installs supersu for you.
I'm to lazy to explain S-OFF but basically it allows you to change system files permanently, normal once you reset your device whatever changes you made to the /system would disappear unless you have S-OFF.

1) the fast boot and adb is standalone because the full thing is the android SDK, which is a lot lot lot lot larger to download, so the standalone is basically the essentials
2) you navigate using the volume rocker and you click options by using the power button
3) hboot IS the bootloader. So like I said while the device is completely off hold Volume Down + Power Button intill it boots into bootloader/hboot , then you press the power button to select fastboot. And you would run "fastboot erase cache" through the command prompt that you open when you hold shift and right click in the folder where you have adb and fastboot. And you would place the recovery you download in the folder with adb and fastboot And run the command so for example "fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img"
4) first let's start with S-ON, basically S-ON protects the system from any changes or tampering you might do, if you try to modify system files your phone will restart and any changes would be reverted, or as soon as you restart your phone manually all changes are gone. Therefore when you turn S-off it allows you to tamper with the files and make changes.
5) and you can't flash anything without a recovery really, unless its a update from HTC directly or something

Thanks guys you have been a great help. Finaly i sort of understand how this works...never thought that the Genius of android devices aka HTC would make something so complicated. on my lg, it was just hit a button and ur rooted.
thanks thanks thanks thanks and again...thanks:good:
now i can just go over to rasheds house and let him use my phone  so he could port CM and test it!!!
EDIT
so...all i do is
1. Unlock Boot Loader...by following instructions on HTC Dev website
2. Go into H boot by holding power and volume down. Selecting Fast Boot (while phone is plugged into pc) on pc command prompt type in command to flash recovery.
Thats it? did i miss anything?

Yeah that's it and to S-OFF just follow the instructions in the other thread.

The other thread tells me what to do, but doesn't explain how to do it

So let me get this straight.
I must go to the HTC Dev website, and folow all instructions their to unlock the boot loader. Once i have unlocked the bootloader i must put the recovery and superuser files onto the root of my sd card/phone storage, boot into HBoot, select Fast Boot, hook up the phone to pc, and on my pc, in comand prompt type the folowing comands:
> c:\fastboot
> fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
(if those codes are incorrect, please let me know)
After that, i simply wait for the recovery to flash (idk how long, or what do i look for to know that it is completed?????).
Once it is flashed, i tell it in recovery to flash supersu, or superuser. which ever one it does.
Once that is done, reboot, put moonshine/rumrunner on to the root of my sdcard/phone storage, reboot into recovery, and flash it. that will turn Security (s) off.
if any of that is incorrect, please tell me. cause this is so confusing. Like details i need is
1. when where do i plug in the phone to the computer
2. do i boot into hboot first, then plug in the phone, or do i plug in first, then reboot into hboot
3. do i need to run any ddms.bat or fastboot.bat files beforehand?
4. i flash moonshine in recovery, or comand it from pc?
see...i need DETAILS, not like: flash recovery. I understand that i need to flash the recovery... HOW and WHEN is what i need to know...does that make more sense of what my problem is?
EDIT
BTW, FXXX it, im not rooting this thing till 1 of 2 things happens. 1, i get a normal explanation, that will walk me through step by step on how to do this. i dont need screenshots nesicarily, just a detailed explanation...this isnt just for me, but for tons of other people who have the HTC First. or 2. someone makes a noob proof program that you simply hook up your phone to ur pc and hit root.

You flash recovery from a file on your computer. With your current setup, put recovery.img where fastboot.exe is and run that command. It should only take a couple seconds, if it hangs press Ctrl+C to terminate, type "adb devices" to check if the device is detected, if not type "adb kill-server" and try again.
You don't need superuser to moonshine, that's for getting you root when you're done and booted up.
1. Before doing anything that involves the phone and the computer communicating via USB. -.-
2. Doesn't matter, the phone doesn't need to be unplugged for any part of this so it doesn't hurt to leave it plugged in.
3. What? Don't just run stuff without knowing what it does.
4. Run moonshine from your computer.
Let's go over the basics a little:
To boot into recovery once it's installed, turn off the phone and then hold down power and volume down until the softkeys flash. Release the power button before releasing the volume button. That will bring you to HBOOT. Use the volume keys to scroll to, and power to select, "BOOTLOADER", then "RECOVERY". The alternative less painful method is to type "adb reboot recovery" from your computer.
All you need to root this phone is to install Superuser via a recovery such as ClockworkMod or TWRP. You do that by putting Superuser.zip in the phone's storage, installing recovery as above, then boot into recovery and choose "Install zip" and find the zip on /sdcard0.
S-OFF is not required to run apps with root permissions, but it is required to make permanent changes to system files such as any mods, and to flash ROMs.
A quirk with moonshine is that if you relock the bootloader after S-OFF, you will be unable to reunlock until you RUU (return to factory image) the phone.

wow thanks man.
Um.
1. how do i RUU and what does it stand for?
2. yes. i see the recovery and boot files within my fastboot folder on my c drive. the recovery is TWRP, what is the boot file?
3. can anyone show some screenshots of the actual code typing. like show me command prompt with the codes typed it and ran?
4. if anyone can, make a video walk through of the basics, not necessarily rooting, but simply so i could see the darn stuff in action?
5. should i relock the bootloader after s-off? what happens if i do/do not relock?
THANKS SO MUCH GUYS
this is not only a help to me, but a help to anyone else who buys this device. thanks alot, i am now piecing together the pieces and see a vague picture!

I'll reset my device later and reroot it and try to screen shot the process.

At the end after you click recovery your device will reboot just enter hboot mode again but holder the power button and volume down rocker and go back to recovery.

Thanks for the guide in this thread.. I am trying to root my First as well but, and I have the Unlock_code.bin file. I am trying to push that back to the device, but the process seems to freeze when I do the "fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin" I have let it sit there for several minutes. Any ideas? I am on a fresh install of Win7.
Thanks again for this guide.

I don't think its a windows problem. Is android debug on? Is your phone found by the android SDK ddms? Did you install HTC drivers?

[Guide] Newb guide to unlocking HBOOT 1.16.0000 and 2.00+ and flashing a custom ROM

There's no exploit that has been found yet to S-OFF your HBOOT 1.16.0000 Incredible S, but you can unlock the bootloader, flash a recovery image, and install a custom ROM.
If you're not sure about doing this, I'd advise against it - things can go wrong, and there is a chance you'll damage your phone. Also be aware that HTC's unlock process effectively voids your warranty, and it will erase everything on your phone, as if your stock ROM went back to how it was when you first bought the phone.
1. Go to http://htcdev.com/ and create a free account. Once done, click the "Unlock Bootloader" link, or click here. Note that the Incredible S v1.16.0000 wasn't listed at the time of writing this, but the process still works fine.
Follow the instructions there to the letter; it's a pretty simple process - the guide says you'll need HTC Sync installed, but you may just need USB drivers. I installed HTC Sync for this process and then uninstalled it from my PC afterwards.
Part of this process involves grabbing some files from the Android SDK; you might not have that installed, so download them HERE. Put them somewhere easy to find, like the root of your C: drive in a folder called "android" (I'll use this for the rest of the instructions).
2. You'll know the process is going well when your phone flashes up an image asking if you're sure you want to unlock your bootloader. If you're still sure, select yes, and the process will complete.
3. Once done, your phone's bootloader will be unlocked, enabling you to flash a recovery image.
4. Go to here and download the recovery image for the Incredible S. Put it in the "android" folder along with the other files needed for HTC's unlock process, above. This file is the ClockWorkMod recovery image for the IncS.
5. Shut down your phone. Plug it in via USB to your PC which you set up during the HTC unlock process. Hold volume down, and press power and the phone will boot into the bootloader. Wait for it to scan your SD card (takes a few seconds), then ensure "Fastboot" is highlighted and press power.
6. On your PC, load up a command prompt - open the Start menu, go to Run, and type "cmd".
7. In the command prompt window, type the following, assuming the HTC unlock files and the recovery image you downloaded in step 4 is all in C:android.
Code:
cd c:android
Then type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <recovery_name.img>
Don't forget the .img on the end, and replace "recovery_name" with the specific name of the recovery image you want to use. For ClockWorkMod linked to in step 4, you'd type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-vivo.img
After a few seconds, ClockWordMod will have been flashed to your phone.
8. Reboot your phone, there should be an option in the fastboot menu (volume up and down to navigate, power to select). It should boot as per normal. Put it into USB disk mode, and download a ROM that you'd like to use. CyanogenMod is a good start: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/htc-incredible-s
Download the ROM and place it in the root of your SD card (ie. not in any folders or anything).
9. Power off the phone. Hold volume down and press power to boot back into the bootloader. Use volume down to select "Recovery" and press power. ClockWorkMod recovery will load.
10. Using volume up/down and power to select, go down to Backup/Restore. Select it, then hit Backup. ClockWorkMod will backup your stock ROM in case there are any dramas and you want to go back to it.
11. After that (takes around 3-4 minutes), go back to the main menu. Select wipe data/factory reset and confirm. Go back to the main menu, select Advanced > Wipe Dalvik cache > confirm. Always best to do these 2 things before flashing a new ROM.
12. Go back to the main menu, and select "Install zip from SDcard". Next choose "Select Zip from SD card" and select the ROM you'd like to install. Confirm this action, and ClockWorkMod will install your new ROM. After that's done, shut the phone down.
13. Ordinarily you'd be done after that, and you could boot into your new ROM. However HBOOT 1.16 does some weird stuff and tends to cause issues; I think it interferes with the installation of the boot.img that ordinarily would be flashed with the ROM. Anyhow, grab the ROM that you downloaded earlier (CyanogenMod, in my example), and on your PC, unzip the file somewhere. Once unzipped, inside you'll see a file called "boot.img". Put this in the same folder as your other Android tools that you used earlier. Power your phone on, hold volume down, and instead of loading recovery by choosing "recovery", choose "usb fastboot".
14. Open up your command prompt again (Start > Run > "cmd"), and type (using the "android" folder for this example):
Code:
cd c:android
fastboot flash boot boot.img
This will flash the boot.img to your phone.
Power off the phone, reboot it, and you should be good to go. There may be more efficient ways to do some of the above, but I'm not a massive guru at this stuff, I just haaaate Sense and bloatware. If any gurus notice any errors, please let me know.
* Edit: Bear in mind that by default, a CM7 install won't include any Google apps (this includes the market app); this needs to be flashed as a separate update via recovery. At the time of writing, a link to information about the Google apps package for CM7 is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/t-1297579.html
Have updated the title as this should work with HBOOT 2.00+; haven't tested this myself though.
Apologies, not around this site too often these days, at least until an official ICS ROM is out, so I probably won't respond to PMs. Good luck, and hope the above info helps - but it may pay to do some due diligence yourself first, in case it's out of date.

4. Go to this thread and download the recovery image for the Incredible S.
7. In the command prompt window, type the following, assuming the HTC unlock files and the recovery image you downloaded in step 4 is all in C:\android.
Code:
cd c:\android
Then type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery <recovery_name.img>
Don't forget the .img on the end, and replace "recovery_name" with the specific name of the recovery image you want to use. For ClockWorkMod linked to in step 4, you'd type:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-vivo.im

Yeah good work dude. Should put a stop to the constant h-boot posts. We just need a mod to sticky this.
I bought one XTC Clip to unlock Incredible S but now i'm Xperia ARC.
If someone wants buy my XTC Clip, contact.
I sell by one lower price.
After flashing the boot.img, you may need to install the ROM one more time (if the phone cannot boot). But this time, do not wipe any cache. Just install the ROM from Recovery.
I wanna do that but i am afraid that i may end up making my device useless

You dun learn when u dun try. Go ahead, it's quite safe if u follow the steps carefully. You will be glad if u did. The custom ROMs are way better than the stock ones.
thanks mate! works perfect!
just need to add a little bit steps u were missing
after step 12, have to restart the phone to fastboot in order to flash boot.
another question, if i flash a custom rom, will it unlock my sim lock as well?
i cant find it out just bcos i already unlock my IS by purchased a unlock code online 3 weeks ago.
many thanks
and thanks and thanks again!

No flashing a custom ROM will not SIM Unlock a phone.
i heard some dude downgrade the HBOOT to 1.13 by using gold card.
i tired, but IS checked version somehow, said version is old.
can we flash UUR instead of flash a custom Rom? and if it works is that mean Hboot will be 1.13?
i tried before, got an error says unable to open the file. any ideas?

Did you install Cyanogen? If so, go back to their download pages or forum thread for the IncS and get the "Gapps" or Google Apps installer.

Revolutionary.io does not work with this latest HBOOT version, thus the reason for this thread. You have to use the HTCDEV unlock method.

[Q] help me reinstall OS and root my nexus one

I've got a nexus one with a broken power button and a corrupt OS. It rarely successfully manages to boot. Since this is the case, I'm not able to turn on USB debugging to follow some of the tutorials here..
My next try was fastboot.. I downloaded these two files:
recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-passion.img
update-cm-7.1.0-N1-signed.zip
But it seems like I wont be able to flash a recovery file if I have "s-on" displayed on my hboot or fastboot screen..
How do I gain "s-off"? And is it possible to flash a stock rom via fastboot?
And yes, my phone's got stock gingerbread 2.3.4 rom.
HBOOT 0.35.0017
MICROP 0b15
Touch panel SYNT0103
Radio 5.08.00.04
Please help me with this matter as I have been trying to accomplish this task for over three months now..
Read Nexus One wiki, section "root", and section "recovery".
You don't need S-OFF to flash anything, if you unlock your bootloader. This is Nexus.
Boot into fastboot, plug into your PC, open command prompt wherever you have the fastboot command in Windows, most likely in android sdk under platform-tools, run "fastboot oem unlock" from command prompt, your bootloader is now unlocked. Attempt to flash your recovery now."

It's already unlocked, as there is a small open lock displayed at the bottom of the boot screen.. and fastboot displayed it as already unlocked as well.. still.. i need a way to go to recovery without the power button
If you're in the bootloader - "fastboot reboot recovery".
If you're in the OS or while the OS is booting and ADB daemon is already running - "adb reboot recovery".

fastboot reboot recovery doesnt seem to boot the phone to recovery..
should the OS be completely booted up if I want to use the adb command? because it displays the error "error: device not found" when I try to "adb reboot recovery"
Might this be a problem with my computer? I checked and confirmed that the drivers for the phone are successfully installed...

I've attached an image showing proof that I've tried your method but still kept on failing to reboot to recovery..
When i try the command "fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.0-passion.img", the phone simply restarts and goes back to the 'X' boot screen and gets stuck there.
Could anyone please find me an genuine unedited gingerbread 2.3.4 ROM so I can PASSIMG it? ... I've downloaded several rooted ones.. but all seem to need the "android-info" file
fastboot reboot recovery
No "reboot-recovery".
And if you still get stuck on "X" when you reboot to recovery - it means that your recovery is corrupted/unusable too, and you need to PASSIMG everything.
Generally, booting the recovery through "fastboot boot" should have done enough - if your phone can't boot, it might probably be a HW problem preventing it from booting, and in that case - nothing will help.

Yes, you're right. Fastboot can't reboot to recovery, only adb.
Oh well, in that case you're out of luck. You can't PASSIMG without power button, so if "fastboot boot some_boot_image" doesn't help - there's not much left to do.
You could always disassemble the phone and fix the power button...

Alternative SIM Unlock (Try if nothing else works)

After searching for hours and finding links to links and threads with broken links I figured I'd help out anyone who finds themselves in my situation.
I'll assume you already know that your warranty is void. If you visit this site you may as well already know that much
Start here if your bootloader is locked
First thing you want to do is download HTC Sync for your drivers here.
Plug it in and wait for it to connect. Some times disabling HTC Sync in the settings helps get it going. If it just won't start, go to your device manager and delete(uninstall) the driver for it. It's usually under USB Host or something similar.
Go to your settings and disable fast reboot, then power off your phone. If you don't do this you may have to wait an additional 10 seconds after it starts booting.
Now go to HTC Dev's Unlock Bootloader section and from the dropdown menu select the last option "All other supported phones". If you do not have an account you'll be prompted to register. Do it, it's free. From there follow their guide and you'll be supplied with a file to flash that will unlock your bootloader.
Once you have this file save it from the email to your adb/fastboot folder and make sure it's named Unlock_Code.bin then while in fastboot mode in the phone you want to give the command to flash it
Code:
fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
Congrats! You now have an unlocked Bootloader. You can see this in the bootloader (vol- and power) screen at the top. It will now say "Unlocked" highlighted in purple.
Start here if your bootloader is unlocked but you are S-on
Before we start we need to obtain root and get a custom recovery. Since we're already back in the bootloader checking to see if we're unlocked let's go to fastboot again. Now take that file I just linked you and put it in with the others from before in the ADB/Fastboot folder and rename it to "recovery.img". Go back to the command prompt window and type this code in:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
*Note* if you did not rename the file to recovery.img then this code will not work.
Once this is finished you'll still be in the bootloader so let's take if for a spin! Select Bootloader with the volume button and press power to select it. Now go down to "Recovery" and press power. Once you leave here and reboot to system it will ask if you want to have root because it's nice like that. Swipe the bar for yes, cancel for no. It's not really important now but you can stop there if you don't want the SIM Unlock.
Now for getting rid of S-on.
S-on seems to be some sort of secondary lock. I believe it stops you from flashing custom roms... whatever, we don't want to be locked out from our own device! Let's get rid of it with Firewater!
At this point it's probably easier to point you to a more thorough guide. Here.
Start here if your bootloader is unlocked and you are S-off
At this point I want to point you to the bottom where all the links are. Download the 4.1 rom and the RUU flash tool. These are relatively big files so they can download while you finish reading.
If you're like me the RUU tool will not work for you on a 4.3 rom so what we're going to do is flash the 4.1 rom via TWRP.
First take the 4.1 rom you downloaded and put it in the root directory of your SD card. If you want to test it (I didn't but I put it there for you) you can also flash the touch screen img through fastboot. If not, continue on with the rest of the guide.
Power down and hold vol- and power to get into your bootloader. Use vol- to select recovery and press power to enter. Now we want to wipe data and do a factory reset so tap "Wipe" and slide the bar. Once this is done tap "Back" and the back button on the bottom right. Next, tap Install and scroll down to EclipticOne.zip (I used 3.0) tap it and slide the bar to install. It takes about 3 minutes. Once it's sucessful go ahead and reboot to system.
Now you'll notice the touchscreen is broken. Not to fear, we can fix that by flashing the firmware for 4.1 with the RUU program. It acts like a setup at first but it's a firmware flashing tool. Just follow the directions and wait (around 6 minutes for me but it says 10).
But wait! We're still not done! This removed our root so we want to let it boot up completely then go back to our recovery and on exiting (reboot into system) it will ask if we want to have root. Slide the bar to accept and wait for boot. Once it does find the SuperSU app and open it. It will tell you you're not done yet so select TWRP to let it install itself for you.
Now we're at the final stretch! Search the Play Store for Sprint Unlock Helper and download it. Open it up and follow the instructions there and... Well I'm still not there yet so give me a minute... Currently rebooting from TWRP root right now.
Okay, so it worked! Also, I had flashed a changed OMAD file in the begining and when I touched simlock it didn't work but I put in a sim card and changed to GSM so... Hell yeah. Hopefully this works for you too!

[Q&A] TWRP for A11_CHL and A11_UL 32-bit only

Q&A for TWRP for A11_CHL and A11_UL 32-bit only
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for TWRP for A11_CHL and A11_UL 32-bit only. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
I think I have ROOT now, installed Su via Recovery. Awesome, thanks!
I Can't Seem To Download The Recovery
I can't seem to download the recovery. can anyone help me with that? all im getting is the androidfiles logo.
I think i may have messed up here. I was in that crowd that got there recovery messed up with the 816 recovery. So my bootloader got relocked (before the custom recovery today) actually its been relocked for a while with tampered above it. Does that mean I'm screwed for getting TWRP on this thing. It still boots (thankfully) but it when I try to flash it says "remote signature verify fail". I'm guessing thats because its relocked. What do I do if there is anything i can do. I'm also doing this on a mac.
Reflash your UNLOCK_BIN.
Then Reboot phone.
Then flash custom recovery IMG
Then let Custom recovery install SU or have an SU.ZIP on your SD card to install.
Then install busybox, again best from a zip done inside recovery.
Need files posted let me know..

Doesn't part of the unlock process require the stock recovery?
Unlocking phone only requires access to FASTBOOT, if you haven't damaged that, then you should be OK. Try flashing your unlock_code.bin again and see what happens.. heck you already flashed a recovery that wasn't for this device, so why be scared now
Put HTC Desire 510 into FASTBOOT mode:
Hold POWER + VOL Down to boot into HBOOT
Use VOL button to move to FASTBOOT and PRESS Power to select.
On your computer:
Open a command prompt (CMD.EXE), navigate to your FASTBOOT folder, with TWRP_2.8.1.0_A11.IMG (RENAMED to recovery.img) in the same directory-- connect your phone via USB, and type the following:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Once it's flashed I can confirm you get SU installed, and can get busybox installed. Apps2SD works as well, so far. When I used HTC's Unlocker bin file, it demolished my stock recovery. It would not boot into recovery for anything. And this flashed flawlessly.

Not working. when i get to the unlock token screen in fastboot it wants to enter recovery. That's what makes me think it needs stock recovery to wipe the device to unlock it. That's where it freezes. It says "Entering Recovery... and at the bottom it say this build is for development purposes only" overlaying the fastboot unlock screen. if i press a button the screen gets all static. and Restarts in fastboot still locked. if i restart it without it plugged in, it boots up normally.
Did you try using the original unlock_code.bin they sent you? You shouldn't need a new token and go through all of that... I believe FASTBOOT is a separate entity from recovery, so it's function shouldn't be affected.

2. I put in the command like I did before, I still had the unlock file from HTCDev
3. After selecting yes and confirming I get this screen. and its froze there.
4. If i hit the power button on that screen it just vibrates, if i hit a volume key, i get static and then it reboots normally and its still locked.

Open a command prompt (CMD.EXE), navigate to your FASTBOOT folder, with TWRP_2.8.1.0_A11.IMG (RENAMED to recovery.img) in the same directory-- connect your phone via USB, and type the following:

when you change the recovery.img , try dragging the recovery.img to cmd.exe. so it would go like this, fastboot flash recovery ( drag the recovery img. you just made) and you are good to go. dont forget to check your work when you are done pushing the recovery.

Thanks for the suggestion guys but its not going to work for me. I can't even get my bootloader unlocked. This has been the most frustrating, P.O.S. letdown of an Android I have ever purchased. I just want throw this phone.
I spend months waiting for root and recovery for this phone thinking it was 64 bit. I find a write up claiming that the 816 recovery works with the 510. Take it back to best buy when i find out that its not 64 bit. They try to wipe which subsequently relocks it. Now i can't even root when a working root arises.
Tethering ?
Does the kernel and Rom have to be created before I can tether the phone ? I ask this because I know that for my wifes S3 I found a zip to install with recovery that let me tether the phone. It's probably a stupid question to ask but the reason I won't activate my Desire is because we use it for the kids to watch movies and such. I know that her ROM is the original one rooted and with custom recovery but just the zip for tethering it. I'd appreciate any input in this area. Thank you.

You can tether in Settings > More > Mobile network sharing. No root even required.

Yeah, I got that but I don't have that plan with my carrier and don't really have too. My other phone is running Pac 4.4.4 or CROM depending on which one I have installed. That was the kind of situation I was looking for. Built in or a zip I could install .
I can make a zip to unlock tethering natively for cricket users.
Having trouble with the partitioning
Thanks a lot for the recovery image. I've got the phone rooted, and I'm in the process of partitioning my SD card so I can move apps over (this is also my first rodeo).
I used the partitioning tool in the recovery, but regardless of the size I tell it, I get the message saying it won't work because the swap and ext combined size is bigger than the card. It's a 16G card, and I'm setting swap to 0, and I've tried everywhere from 512 to 1024 for the ext size (based on a friend's recommendation).
Am I doing something wrong? I got my 510 from Virgin Mobile in the US.
Thanks for the help!

It's a bug in twrp. I use mini partitioning tool and stick my sd card in a reader.
Also you need to be s-off for this to work. Your links 2sd or your apps2sd will fail until s-off for this device is found.
any news on recovery for 64bit version?
HTC Desire 510
Anyone know if there is a recovery for 64 bit yet?

GM1917 Step By Step

so i spent over 10 hours trying to figure out how to root, how to install twrp, how to install rom and it was a almost sleepless night.
So lets begin starting with unlocking the bootloader. Files need are the onetool, installed mine with the setup/update/install drivers. Next your phone settings/about phone/tap build number untill developer/settings/system/devp options/click oem unlocking/yes/advancereboot/usb debugging. Now hold down power button to see extended options and click bootloader...this is also know as fastboot. Once it boots itll show info about ur phone and start. Open the allinone tool thingy and click check and select oneplus 7 pro so that both are green/unlock bootloader and follow promot on phone and screen/then check bootloader to make sure its unlocked. It will format your phone..skip the intro and renable oem usb and advance boot and go back to the bootloader.
followed this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69VE4aBQnO4
download the adb fastboot link he has, and from i had to learn insert any usb u can use and install the adb fastboot on that usb
then follow the commands 4. Now you should check which slot are you using with this command "fastboot getvar current-slot" 5. Now you should change the slot in use with this command "fastboot --set-active=*" you should replace with the slot is not in use, for example if you are using slot a the command will be "fastboot --set-active=b". (thats fastboot space dashdashsetdash, also got stuck here)
download the https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/development/25-05-romaur-v1-0-fast-stable-t3933394 img /Install this boot.img on fastboot- thanks to wzsx150 and put that iso in the usb with the fastboot installion. This is why no directy w.e found i ran into. Once the img is in there you can click the cmd promot there and itll open the fastboot then you type fastboot flash boot boot_9.5.4.img it should say connected and sent complete. hit volume down and boot to recovery with power button to see le.team twrp3.3.1-0527. click wipe/format data/ type in yes/ wipe done. click back arrow to get to main screen. click advanced/install root. The install should be success but make resure u dont reboot but click back again. click mount. Date should be selected and you should be able to plug in phone to add the rom you want to flash. then click back again to menu screen and click install. if all the way at room look for sdcard folder and there should be your rom you just transfer. in my case i used RomAur-v1.1- [28/05] - [OOS_9.0_9.5.5]-[OP7_PRO]-FAST-STABLE and it installed in 5 mins, didnt get no error 7. Then i hit reboot and let it go...rebooted 3 times and here i am on the rom after trying 10 hours
p.s all the work goes to the ppl who did this, i just had to catch on how to do it...was real painful getting closer and closer but the rom didnt want boot or some other problem that was listed in comments
Honestly this wasn't needed as there are step by step easy enough for a 4 year old to follow instructions for each topic, Root, TWRP recovery and how to recover from a soft or hard brick. This is actually harder to follow as it just looks like a massive run-on sentence. Doing a post like this every step should be separated into bullet points (just some constructive criticism)
Well I started with python script to make own booting for the. 6 update to fix verizions restricted caller. That didn't work out, then I read the magisk option and patch the img. Then fastboot was a big issue 2 of where to put the files, even following the video along it still said wrong location file not found. Then one point I had magisk full install but twrp would start loop to recovery and refused to load twrp. Then I had twrp but not magisk, and the twrp was root locked. One thing that was highlighted was that it was explained just follow the links etc. To me it was like a multiply choice test with 6 options and I got the answer for each option but not 1 option was perfectly smooth. Fastboot! OK where is the fastboot option, I see bootloader though. Small important details were left out.... Back in my day you used Odin, flash root flash twrp and done. Installed Roms via twrp and format worked and twrp always had root access

I totally agree with Eric here. Next time you do this, recommend if you are going to put up a "step by step" post, put it in bullet form. This is nearly impossible to follow. I am glad you figured it out, and I also understand the need to vent sometimes, but it doesn't read very well.
