Terrible Camera - Moto X Q&A

This camera is frustrating me. I'm trying to cash a check and it's so bad I can't even deposit a check through my mobile bank of America app. Never had this problem on my gs3.
Anyone else having problems with anything like this?

I've deposited at least 5 checks that way, I don't recall ever having an issue.

Clean off the lens?

Might be a problem with your phone specifically. Camera is decent enough for that.

I deposit checks with mine no problem. Maybe the app is having issues?
Sent from my XT1056 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

No camera issues here, but haven't done online check deposit.
You didn't happen to mention what version of Jelly Bean you were running.
There was a camera update in 4.2.2 and Verizon has recently released 4.4 KitKat.
Perhaps check for updates if you haven't already.

I had the same problem with the Chase app. The problem is that for some reason, the check gets cut off on the left side even though the whole check is in the viewfinder. I pull back a little more to make sure to get the whole check and it works fine.

Ahh yes maybe that's it. I'll have to try that thank you

Yeah, its my US Bank app that messes the picture up as well. I deposit my checks all of the time, but it will stretch the picture vertically and shrink it horizontally.

My usaa app was pretty fussy with my gnex, but worked on my moto x just fine. Maybe they released a bad update or something?

The Bank of America app just doesn't work right on some phones. It's pretty crappy. Not the fault of the Moto X camera. Never works with my HTC One either. Pretty sure the app doesn't handle cameras with 16:9 aspect ratio sensors correctly.

I still couldn't get the Chase app to take a good enough picture to deposit, but they just put a new version out that put black bars on the screen to restrict the area of the check image, and it works for me now.

It's not the camera, it's the app. I first started having issues with the BoA app on my Note 2 after an update awhile back. I found that holding the phone about 12" above the check works best. I always have to make sure all the corners are visible, make sure there are no shadows visible, and the check has to be as flat as possible.

Bank of America stretching

Hey, I use the BoA app to deposit my checks, this is the first time I've done it on my HTC, but whenever I try to take a picture of the front or back of my check, it stretches the picture to the point the BoA app won't accept it.
I took a picture from about 3 feet away. The check should have been very small, but it stretched it so big it wasn't in the frame anymore. Why is it doing this? Is it some weird setting?

I have the same issue with the Wells Fargo app. Worked fine on my OG EVO, but something is causing the finalized picture to be cropped and it cuts off an inch or so of each side.... I made a post a while back, but no replies.
did this on my Note 2 as well...But the One seems to stretch it way more..Anyways I've deposited 5 checks with the one so far with BOA..I just back the camera up a bit and make sure the room is well lit...Works every time now
Seeing the same problem with the Chase app, and also start higher to minimize distortion.
Seems like the One's camera API may cause unexpected results.

I havent had a issue with the Chase one.
I just bring the camera back a little farther then I used to and it works fine. There seems to be a point where it doesn't stretch beyond the corner guide lines. It took me about 5 or 6 tries to get the app to accept the deposit image until I found the right distance.
Same here with Wells Fargo, I tried 10 times at different distances and not one got accepted

I've deposited a couple checks with BOA with the one. Had to keep the image well within the frame. The first couple didn't work because I was to close to the edge of it I guess.

Having the same problem with the BofA app. I also noticed the same type of distortion in the new GDrive "scan" feature. Maybe there'll be a fix on HTC's side of things.

Note 3 not Camera Not Focusing

Hi I recently got a Note 3 but today I went to take a photo and the camera isn't focusing anymore, it's completely out of focus and won't work at all. I used it a couple of days ago and I'm not aware I've changed any settings. Could I have done something unintentionally or could it be a fault?
Did you peel the clear plastic off the lens when unboxing it. Easy to over look.

I've cleared camera cache and restarted phone. Didn't make any difference.

Sounds like the focusing motor (or some circuitry associated with it) is intermittent. About the only time any of mine have ever taken more than 1 second to focus is when they failed to focus at all (like trying to find the minimum macro focus distance, or trying to read a barcode when it's so dark I can barely see it).
I think you're right...
I just hope the process to get the phone fixed or replaced isn't too much hassle and that I get a phone i can easily root at the end of it...
Cheers, Richard

We're talking about a Note 3 so how much more easily do you want than clicking the Root button on Kingo? I've rooted 3 Note 3s with it so far and the most difficult part of the whole process was downloading the program from their slow server (not that I'm complaining).
I haven't looked at Kingo at all, all my research had been on RDLV and URDLV.
As long as it doesn't trip Knox, I'm sold!
Will look into it now, cheers.

Kind of old thread but I wanted to share that I also had the same issue with my Note 3.
I got my "mega camera" changed on warranty at a authorized samsung service point. I told the service point that I use it as a company phone and I can't be without a phone.
He said it wasn't a problem - "Come down here and I'll change the parts in about 15 mins"....
Said and done! The camera works and focuses perfectly again!

Overheating, horrible camera issues.

Hello there.
Just got my N4 yesterday. Started off loving it. Customized it fully. Got everything on it the way I like it. Then started playing with it. Love the new Spen features.
Now the bad. I have had to shut it off, and pull battery multiple times because of overheating, I do not ever, ever have screen brightness on full.
Now on to the camera. This is by far the worst camera I have came across on a device. My N2 was way better. Has anyone had trouble returning their device?

Software Update Fixed Rotation Issues

I plugged my edge into my laptop for the first time today, right away there was a popup stating that there was a update available for my phone. It updated and now my screen rotation works.
So, i guess it was a software issue and not a hardware issue like everyone assumed?
Just thought i'd share for anyone else with their screen not rotating.
How big was the file and what's your build number now?

I honestly don't know how large the file was, it just started downloading as soon as i plugged it in. Download only took about a minuet. Build number - LRX22G.G925VVRU1AOC3
BTW, I rooted with Pinngpong before the update and i'm still rooted, so this doesn't remove root.

The fix is making the phone use the gyroscope for screen rotation. If you have a way to check (very difficult 0n Verizon) I bet your accelerometer is still fried. I read on another forum that those who received the "fix" and were able to check their accelerometer found that it was still locked. Si it could be that the hardware is still at fault. ?????

Thankfully within the 14 day return period, I am getting a brand new 128gb model. I'll use an old charger until I see evidence that the fast charger is not the cause. Possibly a combination of that with the kernel allowing the phone to get too hot. I'd like to hear from anyone who's screen rotation works if they use the fast charger that came with the phone or not.

My screen rotation works just fine and I've been using the fast charger since unboxing (the day it came out). 64gb black if that matters to you.
I actually wasn't even aware there was an issue with the device outside of poor memory management. Maybe I'll switch an an older charger for now.
Also, be careful taking updates ... it's possible they've fixed the vulnerability that allowed us to get root way before any of us truly expected it.

XP Automatically Resetting On Its Own

In the last few days I've noticed that when turning on my screen that I'm forced to put in my PIN, which it says it always does after a reboot/startup. But I didn't reboot the phone myself.
Has anyone else noticed this? I wonder if this has anything to do with the Contacts app issue for int'l XP phones using a T-Mobile SIM card, or something else? It may just be that an app I have was malfunctioning (I did have issues with Chrome earlier right before this new auto reboot occurred), and that's what may have caused it.
Please let me know what you think. Also, PLEASE mention in your post which carrier you have, and also which region you got your phone from. For example, my int'l XP is from Hong Kong, so on the box there's a "ZH", which I guess is the Hong Kong version. You may also have an "HK" too. The Taiwan one says "TW" I believe.
Thanks!
Haven't experienced this issue. I'm using an x performance f8132 hk version.
I just experienced this for the first time yesterday. I updated Playstation Video, which now has the ability to download purchased content. I was downloading my movies to my SD card (35 of them) and the phone rebooted several times. It hasn't happened since. I'm on AT&T with a HK sourced device. I'm thinking this app update may have been causing my problem. I'll follow up in the next few days if I experience any other reboots.

Hey Augie,
Hmm ok. You might be right!
I thought it was because I was using one of those apps that lets you enable "Night Vision" for easier nighttime reading. Some kind of issue with the "screen overlay". So I disabled "screen overlay" for that app and SO FAR it's been fine. You wouldn't happen to have an app like that would you (i.e. Blue Light Filter For Eye Care, Lux, etc)??
I didn't use Playstation app. Just disabled it actually, so I don't know if your problem and mine was the same? Mine would just reboot randomly, never repeatedly over and over at the same time.
Yeah mine is from Hong Kong too. Says ZH on the side, but I believe someone on here said that's still China.
Yes please do. I will too on Monday.
Thanks!!
No screen overlays here. I've used the phone for all kinds of things today without replicating the problem. I'm guessing a certain amount of non-response time from something running triggers a reset. I'll report if it reoccurs.

Augie,
Ok. That's good. I had also cleared not all the caches for all my apps but the "preferences", which is a setting in Apps menu in Settings. Then I rebooted. Not sure if that helped but I think for me it was the Screen Overlay issue. But it COULD'VE also been Playstation for all I know? Then again, this had been happening for last 3-5 days, so if Playstation app update just came in yesterday, then I doubt it was that.
Thanks! Please do. I will too on Monday.
I have not experienced random reboots yet. They could happen from battery saving apps like 360 though

I uninstalled 360 from my phone several days ago as even though it worked on the Z5 and Z3 (and initially it SEEMED to work on my 1st XP), I can see it no longer is working on the XP, so it's not that.
Since clearing all the preferences on all the apps and also disabling the screen overlay on my one "night vision" app, the problem has so far not reoccurred any more (knock on wood!). I am trying out a different app very similar to 360 though on my phone called Hibernation Manager. I'm going to test it tonight/overnight to see how it does, and will report here tomorrow. I'm not holding my breath, but can't hurt to try it. Earlier today I gave it a good 2 hours and the percentage stayed the same during that time (100%), so there's potential I guess.
Update: Forget what I said above. See this updated post instead.

What do you guys think? I was thinking about e-mailing the Amazon seller (NGP) and seeing if they have any Taiwanese models (TW) available. Was thinking maybe this had something to do with the stupid T-Mobile SIM stock Contacts app issue.

You're saying it went to the gray screen where you enter pin on phone start up?

The lock screen is after start up. You're talking about the gray screen before the xperia boot logo?
