Enable Native OTG usb easily in KitKat 4.4 - Nexus 7 General

***THIS FIX APPLIES ONLY TO THE NEXUS 7 (2012) 1ST GEN TABLET***
EDIT 12/30/13*** This vold fix is no longer needed on any CM based or SlimKat roms. A patch has been merged in CM upstream. ***
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48974402&postcount=2892
There seems to be some confusion regarding native OTG usb with KitKat roms. In the transition from 4.3 to 4.4, roms like CM or Slim that used to have native OTG lost that capability. I had discussed this briefly with fattire in his "How to build" thread and it appears that something was changed in the vold binary, that ended up breaking native OTG usb. I believe that a vold commit or commits in CM are the culprit and hopefully, someone much more knowledgeable than I will be able to solve this with a revert of the commit, or a patch. EDIT: It now appears that this can be fixed with edits to the CM ramdisk. See here for XDA Recognized Contributor Temasek's patches submitted for approval to CM Gerrit. EDIT: Merged as of 12/30/13 . http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48746670&postcount=113
Native OTG usb means not having to use an app like stickmount or OTG helper. With native OTG, you can mount and unmount usb storage from within settings/ storage. If your flash drive is plugged in at boot, it will automatically be recognized by the OS in settings/storage and various apps. Additonally, in settings/storage and file managers, you will be able to see the correct total and available space for your flash drive. In applications such as file managers and TB, your flash drive will be automatically recognized and show up as usbdisk.
FYI, stock and stock based roms do not have native OTG capability. These type of roms must use an app like stickmount. This is also true of Omnirom, as it uses the same storage setup of a stock rom.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling and get to the point. Through trial and error, I found that by substituting the vold binary in 4.4 with the one in 4.3 roms it worked just as it did in 4.3. So, I made a zip that will provide a fix for native OTG until it gets fixed in CM upstream.
Here is a link to my original post in fattire's thread with download links to the appropriate vold fix zipfile, either CM11 or SlimKat. Simply flash this over your rom and you've got native OTG, that's it! Of course, you'll have to flash this everytime you flash a new rom or update the rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47564220&postcount=1665
Again, this does not work with stock or stock based roms, as they have a different storage setup. This will work with all current CM based roms, as well as SlimKat. Here's a list of roms that I tested on and all worked. I have a grouper but it should also work on any CM based rom as well as SlmKat for tilapia, as it uses the same storage.

EDIT 12.25: Franco kernel r76 fixed by Osmosis for CM11 now works right out of the box and no longer requires vold fix. http://d-h.st/aZY
Note: For CM11 4.4.1/4.4.2 roms, (builds from Dec 07 and later) this will not work unless you also flash a custom kernel with a CM compatible ramdisk. M-Kernel and Lean Kernel have been tested and they both currently work. See post # 6 in this thread.
This works! If it doesn't work for you, something else may be wrong with your setup ie; OTG cable, flash drive, or N7 usb port. For NTFS support, you will need a third party app like stickmount etc.

I'm sure it's obvious to more experienced people, but I had to turn off zipfile verification in TWRP in order to flash this fix. Cute thing: maybe I have OTG fever, but this OTG fix installs fine using OTG in TWRP In fact I found flashing the kitkat rom & gapps zip from a USB stick beats fiddling with hugely temperamental ADB drivers on my windows 7 setup.. Thanks for making this available, stickmount uninstalled for good now.

Glad it has been beneficial for you. I can't do without OTG and I also flash pretty much everything in TWRP from my USB flash drive. Although it's not a big deal to flash this zip, I'm hoping that the smart guys from CM eventually get this fixed.

Is this only for Grouper?
Flashed it on Flo, desperately hoping it will work but did not.
Ok, changed the vold file to the one in Flo's CM10.2 and also changed the updater-script to use busybox.
And it worked!

Glad you got it working but yeah, this was meant for Nexus 7 1st gen, grouper/tilapia. That's why it's posted in the N7 1st gen forum. Good that you took a chance and applied the same principle of the CM vold binary to Flo, as you had nothing to lose but something to gain.

Looks like this workaround does not work with CM11 Official/Unofficial android 4.4.1. I think something has changed in the CM11 stock ramdisk in builds starting from Dec 07. If you still want to use this workaround, you need to use a custom kernel with a ramdisk that is compatible with CM11.
I have tested with M-Kernel a64 (should also work with a65) and Lean Kernel 3.0 and it works. These kernels could also stop working in future releases if they make changes to their ramdisk similar to CM but for now they do work.
M-Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2168787
Lean Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1950858
So to be clear, on CM builds of 12/07 or later, you need to flash both the 4.3 vold binary zipfix and a custom kernel, either M-Kernel or Lean Kernel. This works and will work until CM either fixes it so we don't need it, or breaks it again with commit or two.

USB OTG for 4.3 Stock based rom
Hi,
I'm using drketan's V6 hybrid rom on my note 2 and I do not see USB OTG support here. It was there till some previous version (v3) for the same rom. Is there any way, any app so that I can enable usb otg support again?

Sorry, you're in the wrong forum. This fix is only relevant for the Nexus 7 running CM based KitKat 4.4 roms. You should be asking your question in this Note 2 forum thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2472270 and I see you already have asked in that forum.
Either wait for an answer, or ask in that forum/thread again.

hi, can i ask you if this work with:
leankernel 3.1
and
Kang-aroo 1.1
?
cause i don't have my nexus 7 at the moment. i think that leankernel 3.1 may not work because i read from changelog: ramdisk: merged latest cm-11.0...

Hey webdroidmt, basically I'm on BS Harmony rom and whenever I flash this successfully however whenever I try to mount my usb drive all that happens is that it gives a notification and just stops. The usb works with my computer just fine however whenever I try stick mount it gives me mount server is busy error so I'm thinking it's the tablet.

@Suxsem
I thought the same thing but it worked for me with Lean 3.1. Sorry, don't know about Kangaroo...cool name Kangaroo. LOL
@dilzo
For it to work with Harmony, you also need to flash a custom kernel, M-Kernel or Lean Kernel due to the changes made in stock CM kernel ramdisk.
However, soon none of this may be needed. XDA Recognized Contributor Temasek, who has an awesome CM11 build for both grouper and tilapia, has submitted a patch to CM Gerrit that is currently under review.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48746670&postcount=113
Hopefully, it will be approved and merged soon and all CM11 based roms will have proper working native USB OTG right out of the box. It has been working on Temasek's CM11 for tilapia for a couple of weeks already. I also tested the fix with his CM11 build for grouper and it worked great.

Write_external_storage
After the patch was merged I was still having problems with applications having access to my external storage. Specifically titanium backup. The following helped. The end goal being to modify /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml under "android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" with the following, in that specific order.
<group gid="media_rw" />
<group gid="sdcard_r" />
<group gid="sdcard_rw" />
sed -e '/WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" >$/N;s/\n\(\([ \t]*\)<group gid="sdcard_rw".*$\)/\n\2<group gid="media_rw" \/>\n\1/' -i /system/etc/permissions/platform.xml
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458021

any hope to work on the moto g? I am thinking of rolling back to 4.3 stock rom now.:cyclops:

This worked for me just editing the file and adding the line(s) that was missing (making sure the end result matched what you had there). I did have to reboot afterwards to get it to work (but perhaps that's a given?)

[HELP_NEEDED]Kitkat 4.4 for Galaxy Tab

Hi Fellow devs,
As you may know, I have been compiling Android 4.0-4.3-based ROMs for Galaxy Tab 10.1. Currently, I am trying to get kitkat 4.4 to work on our devices.
Although I can compile a ROM with only minor difficulties, it already fails when flashing a ROM. It errors with the following message: "set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed". I think this is related to the new way of setting permissions in KK4.4.
If I look in the recovery.log after flashing, I see this:
minzip: Extracted 1197 file(s)
ApplyParsedPerms: removexattr of /system/addon.d/50-hosts.sh to 0 failed: Operation not supported on transport endpoint
script aborted: set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
set_metadata_recursive: some changes failed
E:Error executing updater binary in zip
I have no idea whether the problem is that the recovery needs an update, or the updater binary is not yet finished, or that the updater script needs to be adjusted.
Anyone also working on this?

Thanks. I guess it is related to recovery then, with a need for an updated recovery. I guess that the lack of proper selinux support may also contribute to the problem....
OK, I tried to build both cwm & twrp based on latest kk source code. Recovery image is always over 5.5MB, which is way too large for our device, as our recovery partition is only 5MB. Even when trying to strip recovery & recompile kernel with maximum compression, I can't get to 5MB.
So then I tried a different route, I put the old permission code from an updater-script from jb4.3 in a kk4.4 ROM. Flashing such a ROM works, but it hangs on the bootanimation. Logcat won't connect, so I couldn't find the source of the problem.

Just sent a message to pershoot on gtalk or whatever its supposed to be called, I'll let you know if he says he'll take a look at it
update: he's hasn't been working on the sgt 10.1 in a long time, but if he get's some free time, he might look at it.
good luck either way, you seem to have no trouble pumping out good stuff, I'm sure you'll get it figured out
I'm no developer, but I did some Google search about the error. Most people said that latest recovery is needed, but there's another guy with a different point of view: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/19860479/set-metadata-recursive-failing-on-android-install
Good luck getting KitKat to boot on our tabs!

Could you please share the recovery?
I found this thing ro.build.selinux=1 in the build.prop. Is there someway to change this to 0 and removing all the set_metadata_recursive lines from the updater-script? Doesn't work
Here's what I've tried so far: I followed my android 4.3 guide but it needs some extras. There's 1 header line from libnbaio/audiostreamoutsink that needs to be removed. The error message tells you exactly which one. I also had to comment out 2 lines in surfaceflinger to prevent a very annoying crash I got when I first did android 4.3. There are a few other random lines from audioflinger that have to be removed but the error messages are pretty specific on which ones those are. I also cheated the recovery's gr_text that it said was missing and added in a dummy function according to the header since I never planned to use the recovery and just put that in to get it to compile. I can't get past a metadata error in cwm recovery from pershoot. My TWRP refuses to install the zip at all.

Hi AAccount, thanks for joining in! I also talked to matt604 through gtalk last night. Glad to see I am not alone
I am trying to compile OMNI in stead of CM. Advantage is that it does not require any changes to the source code to compile for p4wifi. Works fine for 4.3 as well.
Anyway. I think we have two options: give proper SELinux support, which means making a SE policy for our device. Or we have to completely get rid of it. Because I think the second is simpler, I chose that route. What I did:
-Add the ro.boot.selinux=disabled prop (maybe we should try ro.build.selinux=0 as well!)
-I removed all the SELinux patches from the kernel (so essentially go back to the 4.2 kernel). This kernel boot fine on 4.3
-Manually swap the set_metadata lines in the updater script by set_perm lines from a 4.3 script (I compared the two and besides the change from set_prop to set_metadata, the permissions set are the same).
This time the ROM booted. But when I saw the launcher for 0.1 sec, I got a "Launcher3 has unexpectedly stopped" error. And with the current security feature for adb, you can't get a logcat on a fresh ROM boot, as you need to approve the connection first, which is impossible due to the continuous FC.
I then also tried adding Apex Launcher (confirmed working on KK on my Nexus 5) - first added to system/app and then moved to /data/app. Both times didn't boot at all.
Removed Launcher3 with Apex in /system/app. Didn't boot.
But at least I saw kitkat running for 0.1sec on my tab, so I feel it should be possible!
My next step:
-Add the HAVE_SELINUX := false flags to BoardConfigCommon
-Add ro.build.selinux=0 to p4-common.mk

I think it's a little obious that our revoceries are not compatible anymore with android 4.4 since there changed alot in recoveries... So.. Older versions of CWM won’t work, nor will TWRP. I think we will need at least cwm 6.0.4.3 to be compatible with kitkat 4.4, our latest recovery is and older build (cwm 6.0.3.6) which is ment to be for android 4.2.2
Edit:
Looks like it's also because of selinux, and you need a newer version of TWRP or cwm as i said. Right now in the Omni 4.4 manifest it actually has the AOSP recovery so you'll wanna change that to Omni 's TWRP on a local manifest. Or at least you need a recovery with proper fstab because the new fstab format in Android 4.3+ is not used by TWRP yet. Beyond that it depends on your BoardConfig.mk whether the recovery is flash able, if you configured it ok then yes!

Its a sort of work around to pre authorise the ADB connection to your computer using the ADB authentication keys from a working (i.e. 4.3 ROM) build.
It sounds like a very long work around though. Also don't want to sound insulting but did you remembered to put the appropriate mount and install lines for Apex while in /data/app into the updater script!

Don't worry, I am not easily insulted I even checked through a file manager whether apex ended up in the right spot. I didn't check permission though, so that may have been wrong, but I am almost sure I checked that one well...
Thanks kasper_h for your hard work. I thought HAVE_SELINUX boardconfig flag was only for android 4.2. I read that here http://selinuxproject.org/page/SEAndroid#Merge_Status. Another thing i t tried was changing the ro.selinux flag in 4.3.1 to see if it made any difference in the about device selinux status page. Setting that flag to disabled or 0 didn't effect that. Ill try omni rom next but i have limited time this weekend though. I agree a removal would be ideal. I disable it on my desktop and laptop right away after installing fedora.
Sent from my GT-P7510 using xda app-developers app
I now managed to get it to boot. But I get fatal errors in AUDIO_SERVICE, crashing the system. I had something similar when trying to compile AOSP in the past. Maybe CM11 is a better choice than OMNI...
I'll keep on trying.
But at least, getting rid of SELinux seems to be thé way to go.
So the xda app messed up my post big time. What I wanted to say was that by using a non selinux kernel, setting the selinux build.prop flag and changing the install script it boots? Yesterday I tried doing the build.prop edit on my cm11 rom and it didn't boot. Very interesting suggestion about the kernel though.
--------------------------------------------Added-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I tried the 3 things you did on my cm11 rom from yesterday:
-Add the ro.boot.selinux=disabled prop (maybe we should try ro.build.selinux=0 as well!)
-I removed all the SELinux patches from the kernel (so essentially go back to the 4.2 kernel). This kernel boot fine on 4.3

and I can't get past the "samsung galaxy tab 10.1" screen. Note I did these things after the rom was compiled since build.prop can be edited from the update zip and I just flashed an older A1 kernel with no selinux.

Finally downloaded the omnirom source. A possible cause of this is becasue omni rom has no ICS_AUDIO_BLOB flag in its source at all. You'll probably need to take a working android 4.3 source, do a "grep ICS_AUDIO_BLOB -r ." on the source and find every place in the working source this flag is defined and then transfer it over to omni rom. Yes it sounds like a pain in the butt.

Maybe it is easier to swap all OMNI project that contain ICS_AUDIO_BLOB in CM for the CM-code
With regard to the kernel, you can't flash a 4.2 kernel on 4.4, as there are ramdisk changes causing it to not boot. I can send you a kernel that will boot on 4.4 that you could try to flash on top of CM11....
I will try a kernel on CM11 and then compare the ramdisk to OMNI to see if that gives a hint why it won't boot...

What are those ramdisk changes? That would probably help for the rom not booting.

I am unable to get the new Amazon AppStore to run on this rom. Immediately force-closes. The same problem happened when updated the Amazon appstore on the 11-15 CM10.2 build. There is a similar comment on that thread by another user but without reply.
I tried re-installing, clearing data, and even a full wipe and clean install but to no avail.
Any suggestions?
P.S. No post in this forum should go without thanking Hashcode for his time and efforts. Without him, this tablet isn't good for anyone between 5-60 years old.

Juppp... same here installed the old Version of the store, everything is OK.
Wow thank you so much! I wish there was some way I could help but I only know the basics on programming but I am more than willing to help in any way. I really hope this improves the device with kitkats memory management
Having lots of problems
First I did a backup (TWRP 2.6.0.1 or something dont remember exactly but older version)
Then I updated TWRP to the newest one
After that I restarted recovery it seams to work fine (other then USB mount which would be very very much appricated if it worked) I wiped System and Seamed to Working like it should
Then I did factory reset and then advanced wipe System
after that I installed the 2 files for CM11 and Gapps
CM11 will look like its starting then go really fast and say success but really do pretty much nothing
the GAPPs will just fail
Now I cant restore the file from the older TWRP since its in a different folder and it fails when i use the file managment to move it to the correct folder..
I cant ADB push a rom file to try an older version of CM ADB sideload also fails Smaller files Like TWRP work but not Roms and this is plenty of open space that is not a problem
Right now I cant install anything but TWRP
Is anyone else having problems?
Thanks!
Just wanted to say Thanks Hashcode, really pleased and surprised to get KitKat for my Kindle, especially so early.
I did a clean install (wipe system, data and cache) with the newest TWRP and then enabled Art as the runtime environment and so far everything seems to be working ok. Installed rotate app to take care of the rotation bug and so far not found any other problems.
Thanks again

I use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=nl.fameit.rotate. There is a 7 dart trial, but I use the paid for version. It has always worked well for me.

Here's a test CM11 build which seems to fix the rotation/orientation issues - at least for me far as I can tell.
http://d-h.st/users/loosethisskin/?fld_id=28911#files or http://goo.im/devs/loosethisskin/jem/cm-11.0
@Hashcode ... the relevant commit is here: https://github.com/loosethisskin/an...mmit/f5c558fa4acee3b793be6e1de9949e9624014c55
It's a first version and will need to be modified if it's worth pursuing (e.g. make it property driven). The change should have a result similar what apps like Rotation Control do. I am forcing sensor (landscape) orienation for every landscape or reverse landscape request.
Let me know...

Hammerhead CM13 Kali Kexec, driver issues.

Hello XDA,
Im back again with another personal project I'm having some issues with. First, a bit of explanation as to why I've chosen to attempt this.
I was running a heavily modified stock rom with nethunter 5.1.0 that was incredibly unstable, and eventually crashed right out on me (modified using root based apps so the crash was my fault) .
So I grabbed the CM13 snapshot for hammerhead, and layered on nethunter 3.0 (big fan since BT3), only to find out my wifi card isn't supported. On 5.1.0 I also had this issue
(see here http://forum.xda-developers.com)/showpost.php?p=64400679
which I managed to fix with a simple source build with a few extra options checked in menuconfig.
Sadly it doesn't seem to be quite that easy with CM13 and marshmellow.
I'm using the DWA160-b2 wifi adapter, which from my research, uses the rt2800usb chipset, which supposedly points to the rt5572 driver. So, I enabled the corresponding options in menuconfig , although I cant remember the exact wording at this moment (using winblows to write this, and not my linux) and I still have no life in my wifi card.
So, after even more research, I found out I should be able to cross-compile the required drivers using the arm-eabi tools. However, after trying I've come to the conclusion that there is no arm based config for this driver. So then I tried backports, and recieved an error about incomplete linux headers (I assume because of the chroot, because my headers are all installed).
Now finally my question:
How do I go about compiling this driver for arm? Or is there a know working arm driver for this particular card? As I have not come across one in my searching. Also please dont say get a new wifi card lol I have a few different usb wifi cards, all with the same issue (albeit different chipsets).
Are u trying to port kali kexec to cm13 kernel?

[ROM][Pie] Unofficial LineageOS 16.0

This is an unofficial build of LineageOS 16.0 for the Motorola razr I, (XT890/SMI).
Lots of thanks to Hazou. This rom is based on his los-14 rom and I got help from him with los-16.
This rom has full hardware support and should run stable. It has been tested by me in daily use. I'm using the rom without google apps, but with microg. Installing google apps requires some apps to move to data partition because of limited system size. See install description for more info.
Special Features
-All features of Hazous 14.1 rom
-MicroG signature spoofing patch is included.
-Adaptive icons can be disabled in homescreen settings.
I can include more features if requested
Known Bugs
-The camera preview image sometimes shakes at random
Download
https://mega.nz/#F!5fBWlIAQ!Jlq9Bj789iJ0iIIptK00tg
Update
If you already run an earlier version of this rom, just boot to twrp and install the latest flashable zip file
Install
1. Backup everything you don't want to loose.
2. Download and install TWRP 3.2.3 (download in attachments. Can be flashed with fastboot or with another recovery)
3. If you come from another rom do a full wipe with twrp
4. Download and install the rom flashable zip (download from mega.nz link is in section download)
5. If you want to install opengapps or need system partition space for other things. Install the move_to_data.zip file from the attachments. This will move the Webview and the LatinIME app to data partition.
6. Choose one of the following options:
-either install google apps (download form https://opengapps.org/. Choose x86 9.0 nano or pico)
-or install MicroG (can be installed with the unofficial installer https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/microg-unofficial-installer-t3432360) this is lighter in ram and cpu usage but you will get problems with google chrome and other apps
7. If you want root access install the addonsu-16.0-x86.zip (download in the attachments)
8. Reboot the phone. First reboot will take some time
Changelog
Code:
20191018:
fixed problem with sms receiving
20191012:
mobile network connection works now after boot
Fixed problems with network switching
Show taps option is working now
intel art extension enabled
Call recording enabled
text relocation warnings disbaled
(untested) encryption. Needs special configuration (see below)
20190819:
SELinux is now enforcing
Notification access feature enabled
solved crashes with houdini emulated apps
20190713:
usb configuration works properly
battery light works now
July security patches
20190704:
first stable release of this rom
DATA Encryption
If you want to enable data encryption this would break the pds partition backup. To prevent this, the cache partition can be used as backup location:
-edit /system/bin/pdsbackup.sh
-change PDS_FILE=/data/misc/pds/pdsdata.img to PDS_FILE=/cache/misc/pds/pdsdata.img
-resize data partition in TWRP:
Code:
umount /data
umount /sdcard
e2fsck -f /dev/block/mmcblk0p17
resize2fs /dev/block/mmcblk0p17 1367079
-reboot the phone

This if I did not expect it, I'll try to see how it goes. Thank you.
Download links and install description are up now. Download from mega.nz because xda download section is broken at the moment. I'm waiting for your test reports
It's really great works, thank you!!
I quickly tried and found several points.
- USB connection with PC
All USB connection option including File Transfer, USB tethering, PTP are grayed out.
Disabling/Enabling android debug in setting didn't work.
- Wifi with storage encryption
When you enable storage encryption, WiFi always become disabled, not be able to enable.
Just FYI, it required deleting /system/bin/pdsbackup.sh AND reducing partition size of 'data' (/dev/block/mmcblk0p17).
- SElinux
Although it is designated as permissive in device.mk, it's actually worked as "disabled".
I'm not sure it's related or not, however, when building "user build", it's failed with "ERROR: permissive domains not allowed in user builds".
I know "user build" is not officially supported in Lineage release, however, it's really helpful if we can do it for AFW usage.
Previously I could use Lineage 14.1 smi build for AFW and safetynet app with user build.
BTW, performance is really great, seems to be almost same as Lineage 11.

I also noticed that. Will see how this can be fixed. It is just a problem with the option dialog. Usb connection works fine. As a workaround you can set a default USB configuration in developer options

I think lineage trust doesn't differentiate between permissive and disabled. Selinux support is planned for future releases
Thank you for quick check.
Regarding USB connection, I also confirmed that Ubuntu can recognize as external storage with above option, besides Windows still does not recognize. Maybe depending on my environment.
Also I noticed that Chrome, Chrome Beta and Chrome Canary (therefore another Chrome based apps such as Maps Go) always crash. This is also maybe my environment only, though. BTW, I could install MicroG, besides couldn't install OpenGapps 9.0 pico due to partition size limit.
Additionally, I couldn't find any LED settings, currently LED is always off during charge or any notification.

Notification Led should work. Can be configured under settings->apps and notifications->notifications->notification light. I don't know what happened with the battery light. It will hopefully come back if I upgrade the driver to hidl.
Google Chrome is a known problem with MicroG. It requires official gapps. I will check if some of the unprivileged lineage apps can be moved to data partition to make place for google apps
Newbie question
Hi all, I know someone who's selling her old RAZR i XT890 and I'm interested (for experimental reasons but also the oddity that it's Intel powered). I've never owned a RAZR i so I've got some questions:
-The phone is from 2012 so quite old and has 1GB RAM, does it work well with this Lineage 16? Because usually newer software would perform bad on older SoC (I used to have iOS 7 on iPhone 4 back in the day and it was painfully slow compared to 6).
-On Lineage 16, can it run any Android app as a standard new Android Pie phone? I ask because this is an Intel x86 CPU, so can it still run Android apps as normal or are most of them only designed for ARM and therefore unusable?
If I get the good news, I may buy the phone and try this Lineage OS custom ROM.
Regarding LED, maybe it became working after modifying some option of notification light. Battery connection light is still always off.
Regarding opengapps, I moved webview and LatinIME from app directory to external SD in TWRP, then installed as normal app after system boot. Webview worked fine besides LatinIME always crash. I'm using different IME, so it's no problem. With this environment, opengapps nano can be installed, then Chrome, Maps and other google apps worked.

That's good. Than we can make a flashable zip to automatically move and symlink them to data partition.
I will provide a new build till end of the week with improved usb and notification LED implementation. I already got it working in my local setup

Newer android versions have been designed while keeping low ram devices in mind. Ram hungry special features like the picture in picture mode are excluded from builds for older device. So the situation is much better then on iOS. But a newer phone would run better thought.
Most android apps are available for x86. But some are still arm only and get automatically emulated. The intel houdini emulator integrates these apps natively into the system but they are a bit slower then x86 apps. These are for example Skype and a few unity based games

Yes, system partition size is limited on this phone. To install GApps some files need to be moved to data partition.
I created a flashable zip to automate this process. Take a look at the modified install description in the first post

Alright, thanks. I bought my friend's RAZR i and I am planning to use it as a daily driver with this ROM (I'm a light user anyway), I can't thank you enough for making this LineageOS for such an old device. I wonder if such a recent Lineage has been developed for the 2011 Atrix, haven't seen one.
I have questions though, firstly I've never used a custom ROM before, can I simply follow the instructions on this thread to get it working, or is there anything that has to be done beforehand like rooting? Secondly, are any other OSs successfully booting on this x86 phone, as I can't find it on XDA? (it surprisingly hasn't gotten much attention as a hackable device like HTC HD2 or Nokia N900 got).

If the phone never had a custom rom yet, you have to unlock the bootloader first. Description is in this thread: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1928551

Yes, it should still work the same. If some links are outdated you can google them yourself
Thank you for bringing my old RAZR i back to life! I really appreciate the time and effort you spent for this obselete phone. Looking forward for more updates and for a bug free ROM. Using it now

- Wifi with storage encryption
When you enable storage encryption, WiFi always become disabled, not be able to enable.
Just FYI, it required deleting /system/bin/pdsbackup.sh AND reducing partition size of 'data' (/dev/block/mmcblk0p17).

I'm not sure if I misunderstood but when you said "it required deleting....." and "reducing partition size of data", did you mean you can get WiFi to work if you do those things? I'm no expert at these but I can atleast apply the "fix" (if it really is) given that you guide me, if it's okay with you. Thanks!

Postmarketos for Amazon Fire 7 HD (2017) (Austin)

Working ebuild for installing postmarketos on the Amazon Fire 7 HD (2017) codename Austin
Amazon Fire 7 (2017) postmarketOS Armv7l Mediatek MT8127 Mali-450MP4 600x1024 display 1GB RAM Linux 3.10.54
What seems to work:
Boot Touch screen Battery percentage Usb internet OTG usb Wayland, Mate, Xfce4, Lxde, Sxmo, i3wm
Does NOT work:
Wifi & Bluetooth (no drivers) GPU acceleration (drivers do not work) Audio Sleep and fully turning off the display Screen rotation Wifi adapter does not work even with drivers and kernel support, mobo support issue(?) FDE Cameras You tell me
Special options: *Must be flashed to USERDATA partition as system partition is too small
msm-fb-refresher packaged is added to the depends to make the screen refresh. After flashing the device must be booted into recovery once. From the recovery it is to be powered off and booted and then as normal. This is because the device depends on the AMONET exploit which is applied by twrp after every flash.
Flashing Instructions
This assumes that you already have linux installed and the bootloader on the tablet is unlocked. Don't worry if it looks complicated. If you are unsure of something ask on the postmarketos matrix or leave a comment for help.
Install pmbootstrap as stated in the postmarketos wiki, does not matter which options or device you pick.
Once that is done download and drag the two folders in the git repo into "/home/YOURUSER/.local/var/pmbootstrap/cache_git/pmaports/device/testing/" also displayed as "~/.local/var/pmbootstrap/cache_git/pmaports/device/testing".
Run pmbootstrap init and select amazon as manufacture and austin as the device, mate, lxde, xfde, are confirmed working.
Run pmbootstrap install
Boot into twrp and wipe all partitions including data
Boot into the hacked bootloader from the twrp options
Run pmbootstrap pmbootstrap flasher flash_rootfs --partition userdata (system partion is too small to flash!) and once it is done flashing run pmbootstrap flasher flash_kernel
Unplug the device, wait 10 seconds and then hold the power button. Once it is powered on YOU MUST boot it into twrp at least once as it needs to restore the AMONET exploit, until you do that the device will not boot.
Issues
If something does not work such as the display rotated wrong or device not booting just comment or open an issue, I changed the rotation of the display in the kernel options to horizontal but i did not test the effects as I already have android with books on it.
Reinstall android/lineage
Simple as cake, just boot into twrp wipe all partions(some will fail), you may need to resize and fix until it starts working. You just need the system and data partitions to be reformated to ext4 even if they already are. Then just flash the lineageos zip file and reboot the device normally(amonet is fine)

Good luck. Tell me if the display works if you do install it. Thanks
hexdump0815 cleaned up the config file, use his fork if you are going to install.

Unfortunately the drivers for this SOC are nonexistent so nothing works. WIfi and hdmi adapters don't work, but OTG does. Hexdump made a Debian and Ubuntu image for this tablet, it is great but the tablet is mostly useless without WiFi and GPU support. You can also flash the main image to the userdata partition instead of using an SD Card, but if I remember correctly the rootfs won't auto extend. It would have been great to use this as a linux tablet, however this SOC is uncommon and is not supported by any Linux maintainer. https://github.com/hexdump0815/imagebuilder/releases/tag/211101-02

I looked at the firmware dump on github, it is all proprietary and seems to be compatible only on android. The closest I got to getting working wifi was moving the original libs and networkmanager bin to linux however it only showed wifi working for a few seconds without detecting anything.
I'm working on this device right now. I just downloaded the repository below, and I will make a pull/merge request upstream soon.

I have my own fork of the pmaports repository at https://gitlab.com/Worldblender/pmaports, where I will push your files (eventually with my changes) to. Maybe we can work together on getting this tablet supported upstream, if you still want to (anything else that isn't working, like the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, will have to come later).
UPDATE: Well, I'm going to use https://github.com/hexdump0815/pmaports-amazon for the config now, didn't notice it the first time around. I also noticethat it's possible to get Wi-Fi working with https://github.com/hexdump0815/imagebuilder-firmware/blob/main/tablet_amazon_austin-firmware.tar.gz, that I will try out with my builds soon.
From https://github.com/hexdump0815/imagebuilder/tree/main/systems/tablet_amazon_austin:
wifi seems to work by using the android firmware and tools in a minimal android bionic chroot env
wifi can be stated via /scripts/start-wifi.sh
uncomment the start of this script in /etc/rc.local in case wifi should be enabled by default
wifi support was added in february 2022, so all images from before do not have it yet but it can be added easily afterwards

You could package the wifi hack into an Alpine Linux for firmware package if you want. Debian 11 runs really well, to bad we can't get everything working.

Will work on that soon. I just got a build to boot today, and basic functionality seems to be working. I'm going to try a different distro for accessing more functionality (likely Ubuntu 20.04 or 22.04) I just opened up a merge request at https://gitlab.com/postmarketOS/pmaports/-/merge_requests/3251 for the progress on upstreaming.
I'm thinking about using the exact same kernel that the LineageOS image uses:
https://github.com/cm14-mt8127/device_amazon_mt8127-common
https://github.com/cm14-mt8127/kernel_amazon_mt8127-common
This kernel has been updated to 3.10.108, and it's the last one for the 3.10 branch. I'm going to try creating a new build using this kernel, and see how it goes.

UPDATE: Three patches would not apply successfully for this kernel:
fix-host-card-inserted.patch
silence-power-logspam.patch
silence-thermal-logspam.patch
After building without these patches, the kernel boots, but it stays stuck without being able to process further, with some kernel messages displayed. I wonder what I should do to get this kernel working, or if this one shouldn't be used.

Use any kernel you want. It literally does not matter as it cannot be mainliner in the future anyways. It makes no difference what you use.

Here's my results after building and boot it:
There are some kernel messages that pop up, and the splash screen never appears. It doesn't matter whether there is a microSD card inserted or not; there seems to be too many changes made to it from 3.10.54 to 3.10.108, along with additional changes that are designed more for Android/LineageOS usage. Finding every one of them is too much work for me.
Three patches would not apply successfully for this kernel:
fix-host-card-inserted.patch (will apply successfully once the entry for line 271 is removed)
silence-power-logspam.patch
silence-thermal-logspam.patch
Again, after building without these patches, the kernel boots, but it stays stuck without being able to proceed further, with some kernel messages displayed. I tried building without any of the patches shipped, but the end result is still the same. I need some help as to what what I should do to get this kernel working, or else I will go back to the 3.10.54 kernel that I know is actually booting to the splash screen. Here, I don't care whether I use a mainline kernel here, since I know the SOC is not supported by mainline. I simply care that I can get a newer kernel version working (from 3.10.54 to 3.10.108), unless there's too many changes for me to go through.

Just use the stock 3.10.54 kernel. Both versions have long since been EOL. It does not matter what is used as functionality will still the same, both now and any future development. I would not bother upgrading the kernel to 3.10.108. Hexdump told me a while back that somebody else maintaining a similar soc on the mainline branch told him that mainlining the device is almost impossible due to some proprietary components by Amazon. I am not entirely sure as to the validity of this claim but I think that it is not worth the effort of upgrading the kernel of this device. Check this page for more info, I found it to be very helpful to my port. https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Amazon_Fire_7_2015_(amazon-ford)
[waits eagerly nonetheless]
This is a solid old device in a lot of ways. I'd love to see it supported by PMOS.
