Gear and Tasker... - Samsung Galaxy Gear

So what kind of tasks are you guys setting up on your gear ?
Just curious what people have come up with as I am looking for ideas...
Thanks

So far only internet on/off
Others have remotevoice working and shake to launch
Also can just trigger tasks
Next mine will be displaying notification counts on my watch

I just have it on the phone and Gear to enable BT tethering for 5 minutes every hour. That allows my calendar to stay in sync. I have a calendar widget in the home screen of my Gear.
Sent from my SM-N900 using xda app-developers app

I have mine set to fetch webcam shots of a few watering holes at different safari national parks (so far seen lion, elephants etc) but you can choose any live stream webcam
Also set it up with Joao apps AutoRemote, Auto contacts etc and can shake to voice call any contact by spoken name
Using EventGhost to get and send notifications and remote control my PC and other android devices
Can instantly share files in both directions with PC, other Android devices and Gear

That tasker app is sum10 serious, I keep hearing about it. I downloaded it but it seems too complicated

I'm going to start a thread requesting people who are using tasker on the gear post the profiles they use on their gear to help those of us less familiar with the app to get rolling.

Gear Notification Router

We know there is an issue with not all notifications going to the Gear.
We can solve this with Android 4.3 and new notification access APIs.
I am working on an app for the Gear to do this - I will keep everyone updated on this thread.
Awesome thanks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337
The notifications API would give the Gear access to the content so it can actually be displayed or is it to mirror whatever is in the notification bar ?
Great!!
Awesome!!!

Is there a published ..something.. about this issue, because I'm only getting a small fraction of sms/email, which is the most important thing for me. Hoping you can do better then Samsung!!
There is an app called Pebblify which is exactly what the gear needs.
You choose which notifications to push to the gear, and it pretty much sends exactly what is in the notification bar to it.
That said, I really like the gear notifications now which I can push a button on the gear and pull my phone out of my pocket and go straight to the message.
Yup, but I guess thats doable. It really is only a matter of figuring out what type of guesture is used there. Maybe nfc proximity? not sure.... anyways once thats figured out, sending the intend should be trivial.

In the gear manager, settings, then select notification, you can select which notifications appear. I have turned off Google+ and GMAIL. I don't use gmail, because I have several email addresses and only want one place to check. But the email app works great and sends most of the email to the gear. Hope this helps!

Not quite the same thing. Check out Pebblify in the market and you will see what I mean. You can have any notification from any app pushed to the Pebble verbatim as it appears in the notification pull down.
That is only part of the equation. The native notification app is just too limited. Ultimately I want to see the same notifications I get on my phone, and the ability to jump directly to the item when clicking the notification or using the gesture.

Yes, I agree with that as well, but to be fair you are comparing V2 Sony to V1 Gear. The Gear will get there also, remember the Sony didn't have that out of the box either.
The Gear's 3rd party software is just starting!
Hence I want to see it eventually. But from what I played with so far with the gear none of the features I mentioned are out of scope for a decent notification app.
I dont expect it to be release over night though or even with all the functionality I would like
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda app-developers app
The notifications are really a huge drawback on this beautiful device.
I turn off messaging notifications and use sms popup and it won't show up on the GG. Google Voice is a no show.
Really hope a 3rd party app can address this massive shortcoming as it appears Samsung has no intention to.
Please enlighten us how development is going??
Hmm i would like to know that too. If what I read is correct, an app on the phone that subscribes to the NotifiactionListenerService should receive all or a limited set of notifications on the phone. If a companion app on the gear can communicate with the app ( not sure how the new BT stack works but I guess it could be in the form of writing to a Parcel, receiving it on the companion app, and pushing the notification content to the screen..... ) it would allow all notifications to display and not just the ones the Gear Manager allows currently.
I will start experimenting a bit with how the gear and phone communicates and how an app could possibly either hijack this channel or create it's own. It would be great if anyone who has more development experience in android join in to see this through.

Found a great alarm clock

I find it odd that you don't have an alarm function on the watch unless tethered to the phone. So I was trying out various alarm clocks for the gear, most did not fit well on the screen and some had time entry not compatible with the gear.
I found the following on Google Play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.macropinch.axe&hl=en
Loaded it via Wondershare and it works a treat. Has 4 great looking clocks including a digital one with seconds and date, easy time entry, multi alarms and snooze function etc and works really well on the gear (with or without connection to phone.
Looks Very Good!
I had not so much time recently but the time to root and configure NOVA is coming...
Great find, thanks a lot. I've left a message on their facebook page and hopefully they should publish it officially on Samsung App store
They just added an app in the Gear store called ZDclock
Lets you set alarms/reminders for all different things.
Looks quite nice on the Gear screen.

Thanks. Yes that's a neat app too. I am keeping them both
I love the idea of an alarm app right on the gear but the permissions that app asks for seem way over the top for what it does. Does it need access to everything on the phone?

Does this app have to be installed on phone and watch, i like the zd clock app but its only available in 24 hour format. If this app is installed on the gear, it automatically installs and syncs with the phone.
Great little app ! Thanks for sharing.. Almost looks like it was designed for the gear.

App is installed on phone and/or watch, and it will synchronise but the beauty of it is it will run as a standalone app on the watch.
i have this app only installed on my Gear.
Digital clock looks good, but analog clock is very bad.
background is gray (not black) and clock isn't centered.:crying:

Apps wish list

Here is my wish list for apps (currently)
Starbucks Card Barcode - how awesome would it be to turn my wrist and pay for my drink.
Foursquare
Yelp
Watch Styler - not working on my S5 and G2N
Facebook - not sure what I want to receive from it yet.
Twitter - be able to selectively choose who I want notifications from.
Tasker
Touchdown notifications
This is just a start how about you?
Those are pretty good. I have one. File Explorer to transfer files from phone to watch via bluetooth.

I would like to see a Pandora app
and maybe an app that can push GPS Turn by turn directions to the watch.
Zedge. I just want my damn power ranger ringtone.

I might consider building this, it should be easy enough. Out of curiosity what type of files would you be pushing to and from your watch?

Some of these are not going to be solved w apps but will need to just have the main watch functionality reworked if we ever get access, but I'm listing just for the sake of wishful thinking:
-Remote control XBMC on my HTPC
At least want to be able to play/pause the movie on my big screen on my watch
-Control and view cameras on my Blue Iris Security Camera DVR server
-Turn on/off my Alarm.com house alarm
-Access to my Vera home automation unit
Wish to review status of sensors (which doors/windows/locks are open/closed)
Trigger my predefined scenes from my watch (IE- activate upstairs AC for 1 hour, panic flicker all household lights, turn on porch light)
-Note app to transfer notes and checklists from my phone (until Evernote is released)
-A more complex watchface that has a higher density of at a glance info. I am not interested in a vanity watchface that just changes the font and background, lol. I'm talking about a useful one for workdays where I can look down and see on one screen the time, date, temperature, weather, next appointment, mute/sound watchstate, connected WiFi SSD, phone signal level, phone battery level, watch battery level. See Canvas for Pebble to understand what I'm talking about. This was doable on the Pebble's lower resolution screen, so this should be even better.
-voice control Google Now instead of S-Voice (enable voice control with wrist shake instead of pushing button would be awesome)
-Make Hangouts default messaging app to work w/ Gear
-Month view calendar
-Set watch to always vibrate, even when sound is on
-Immediate ring on watch (seems to be a delay after phone starts ringing)
I'll be very happy if a get a lot of these as it's stuff I could do on my Pebble that I miss.
Profile manager
Extensions to Tasker or Automateit, or a dedicated profile manager, in order to easily change screen brightness and timeout, for example.

I would love an app that allows for one-click changes to brightness and wake gesture in one place so I don't have to dig through menus every night/morning. Daytime - Brightness to 3, Gesture to Last Viewed. Nighttime - Brightness to 1, Gesture to None.
If there was a standalone alarm, I could even turn off bluetooth during nighttime. I already need a way to disable notifications at night. Tired of random work emails waking me up. GRRRR.
As many have stated, would love some kind of tasker that changes settings, watch face, apps, wallpaper depending on day or location. Allow to respond to Hangouts through watch typing or voice, instead of having to go to phone to respond. Kind of takes away the point of having the watch if I have to take out my phone every time I need to reply. A better exercise app that does more than track just running and biking. Wish it would track just regular type of exercises.
Navigation is one I would love to have. I know there was talk of turnbyturn but so far nothing.

Automation

I'm looking to do some fancy things with my Nexus 6 and I'm thinking I could probably do it with automation, but I'm new to the world of automation. First of all, if this is posted in the wrong section my apologies.
I want, at the designated time, for my Nexus 6 to cast its screen to my Chromecast automatically. For example, my alarm goes off at 9:30am, so at 9:29 I want my Nexus to open up the Clock app, cast its screen to my Chromecast, at which time my alarm will go off through my surround sound speakers, and I'll easily be able to see the time on my TV (I'm blind without my glasses).
Is any of this possible with automation? I tried the free Tasker app but couldn't find any Chromecast or cast screen option for actions. Since screen cast is built in for Android 5 I figured this could be easier to achieve, but like I said I've never used automation before so I am unsure. Can anyone give me some advice on how I can accomplish something like this?
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
Never used it, but I know there's a Tasker plugin called AutoCast. Should probably be what you need...
It's on Play store
I tried AutoCast but it doesn't seem to do what I need it to do.
I found "Cast Screen" under apps in Tasker, it does exactly what it should I suppose. It launches Cast Screen but I need it to also automatically select my Chromecast so that it actually casts my screen. Still stumped for now lol

Tasker can do input (button presses) up, down, select etc
If rootSU's suggestion don't work, try another Tasker app: AutoInput.
Tasker can do many things, best is to google what you want to do, likely someone has already done it.....

lock device on boot

Hello, Im running a Malaysk ROM and I dont find a solution to lock the device on boot. For example requesting a PIN o similar way commonly used on the phones.
I booked a car park into airport for the next Saturday and they need to have car keys in order to could move the car. In that way, when they access the car, they also could access to the Radio so potentially they could read my email, calendar, chat and also using internet with my chrome saved password......
Any suggestion?
If you have your phone and are away from your car they have no access to its data. Maybe only your contacts if you uploaded them to the hu.

Yes but its not so hard to connect the radio to the park wifi or them phone tethering. Ty
Any answer on this?
