[Q] Sprint OTA 4.4 on rooted (locked) 4.2.2 - Now reboots every 30 secs - Moto X Q&A

So I had a rooted Sprint 4.2.2 (not unlocked, just rooted) and I got the OTA alert.
I accidentally installed it and it failed and now when it restarts, it gets to android for about 30 secs and then does the "powering off" bit and restarts... over and over.
In that 30 secs I can get to the settings and see that the version is still 4.2.2 so it didn't take. But it almost seems like it in stuck in that mode where it thinks it is doing the upgrade.
I tried killing memory resident stuff to prevent the restart to no avail.
I cannot get into any kind of stock recovery, it just reboots to normal mode
My only option is to go into Bootloader which does work.
But when I try to use RSD Lite and flash back to that last stock image, it shows
Failed flashing process 2/17 flash partition "gpt.bin"
I read that this may be due to the phone not allowing me to downgrade to a version lower than I currently have? Also read it could be the battery needs to be charged more.
Thoughts?

Can you get to the factory reset in that thirty seconds?
Sent from my XT1056 using xda app-developers app

If you can get to boot loader, will it go into recovery? If so, try restoring a backup. Likely you will have to do THIS, and I recommend doing this, the ota, then reroot.
Edit: if it boots to ROM for 30sec, try wiping cache and dalvik, then fix permissions, then reboot.

Ok so after reading around and doing some of my own playing around, I figured out how to fix it with some ideas from this thread
First off, the moto x rooting process actually REMOVES the recovery.img file from your phone, so what seems to be happening is that the upgrade downloads and starts to install... it attempts to load the recovery to flash the image, but since it doesn't exist, it just restarts the phone. When the phone restarts, the upgrade process still thinks it needs to run the upgrade, so it powers down.. this is where it gets stuck in the loop.
The solution is actually simple. Get into Bootloader mode (Power + Vol Down) which was slightly tricky since the phone always rebooted and never actually powered down. So I had to catch it at the end of the power off cycle, before it restarted. Once I was in bootloader mode I could use the following command:
Code:
fastboot erase cache
That seems to remove the downloaded update files as the phone stopped rebooting over and over.
But now I get Mobile IP Registration Error 67 (MIP) which basically means my registration data got wiped.. not sure I understand why that would happen.. but it basically means I need my MSL and have to enter the code to reset registration which will force a wipe of all data. At least I have the opportunity to back everything up over wifi now that I've stopped the looping.
The second part of this fix I haven't tried, but based on an educated guess, to actually GET the update correctly, I would need to flash the stock recovery image back using:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
where the recovery.img file comes from the zip file for the moto x stock image from the sbf repo:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
That of course needs to be done before I call Sprint to get my MSL and perform the reset.
All in all, a minor setback overall... better than a paperweight Perhaps instead of doing the erase cache step and just flashing recovery may have saved my MIP data
---- EDIT-----
Ah, gokart2, I see you had a similar process. Cheers

Turns out the Mobile 67 error was because my friend changed her service back to her old phone.... I should add that this wasn't my phone by my friend's phone.

[Q] Moto X stuck in a boot loop

Hi,
So recently KitKat is released for AT&T Moto X's. Excited, I decided to upgrade the phone to KitKat.
I was previously rooted with RockMyMoto, and before updating to KitKat, I went to unroot the phone through the SuperSU app that was installed.
As I was unsure if it was really unrooted, I opened up Titanium Backup (which required root) and it popped up with an error that Titanium Backup wouldn't work because my device was not rooted.
So with this confirmation (a really noob way to check), I went ahead to download the update through the default system settings app. After the download, I proceeded to install it.
Before installing the update, it said the phone will shut down and proceed with the update, which takes around 20 minutes, and it will be done once it boots up again. And this is where the problem comes. After the phone switched off, the phone just reboots immediately, as if it was just restarting. And after 30 seconds or so, the phone switches off and restarts again. Initially, I thought this was normal, but it kept on restarting and I knew something was up.
I don't know what to do now. I have tried holding down the volume buttons and power button to reboot into recovery, but every time I select the recovery option, the phone just reboots like normal and does not reboot to recovery. I even tried to "race against time" and restore my phone through settings app, but it doesn't allow me to.
What can I do? Please help me
I looked up on the internet, and it seems that I have to remove the OTA cache from the cache folder, but how can I do it? I don;t have root access anymore...
EDIT: FIXED, PLEASE DELETE

How did you fix it?
I am having this very same problem. My phone just today went into boot loop. Running KangKat on unlocked 1053 with Faux kernel. No boot logo or anything. The phone just vibrates then after 30 seconds or so, it vibrates again. It does this non-stop.
I can plug my phone into USB and the phone's contents come up on my computer, but I can't get the screen to turn on!! Any ideas?

Are you able to hold power + volume to get in to your recovery?
Then you can reinstall your nandroid. Or, then you can flash a different rom.

Or he can also boot into bootloader with adb by doing adb reboot bootloader then typing fastboot erase cache

This process seems to work quite well.
I'd recommend to use MFastboot. With your phone off, you can boot into fastboot by holding power and volume down for a few seconds, release and it will boot into fastboot. Connect the usb cable, and first try "fastboot erase cache". If that doesn't work by itself, repeat the process but also use "fastboot erase userdata" (THIS WILL ERASE ALL YOUR DATA!) but at least there is a chance you might get it to boot normally. It´s like a factory reset, you will have to start from scratch.
I know my answer is out of date but it might be useful for someone coming for this same solution.

[Q] Nexus 6 not booting up after random shut down

Good evening, everyone.
Few hours ago, my N6 randomly shut down and not booting up to the system. I tried to re-install the factory image for 5.0.1 but I got stuck at bootloader screen. I tried every options available from bootloader screen(Start, Recovery mode, Restart bootloader etc.) but it performed nothing but coming back to the bootloader screen. When I tried to use 'Nexus Root Toolkit' to install new system and whenever the process was trying to initiate the process, it is giving me same error message 'FAILED <remote failure>'
What can I do from here?
I appreciate your attention.

If your bootloader is unlocked, you should be able to either flash the stock factory image, or re-flash each partition separately through the tool-kit. Since you're getting remote errors with the toolkit, double check that you have the right drivers installed, the tookit and a search on the forum should help with that.
did you already try :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/guide-flash-factory-images-nexus-6shamu-t2954008
Don't want to raise any alarms already but I shut mine down on Sunday night (Unlocked/ Rooted/ custom kernel & rom) in order to boot in Recovery and flash a new kernel version and:
1) The sdcard looked empty, it read ~ 26 GB free (I had no more than 20 gb free before reboot) and no folders whatsoever.
2) The phone was stuck at the Google logo heating up but going nowhere.
As I said don't want to start assuming things but the phone randomly going "nuts" and losing all data is scary... I had to spent my entire day yesterday flashing stock 5.0.1 back and re-setting up everything. I followed the guide posted above (http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/guide-flash-factory-images-nexus-6shamu-t2954008 oh, go with Method 2 and it will work fine).
Out of curiosity how does your SD look like from recovery? Oh, but then you say you can't even boot to Recovery. Which recovery do you have? (I had/have TWRP 2.8.3.1 ). Anyway to repair it you only need to be able to boot into Bootloader properly I guess.

[Q] HARD Bricked Nexus 6 PLEASE HELP!!

My motorola Nexus 6 won't turn on, when I try to power it on, it shows the Google sign then shuts off immediately. When I plug in the charger from a complete power off, the white battery sign keeps flashing, it shows for 1 second then shuts off then repeats the cycle of showing the battery sign then shutting off. It boots into bootloader/fastboot mode fine, and I have tried flashing the factory image, it flashes fine but it still shuts off immediately while showing the google sign. It won't even boot into recovery after the flash, it just shuts off after the google sign. This isn't my first nexus, in know that flashing factory image should fix 99% of issues. Please help.
P.S I didn't purchase officially from google or Motorola, bought it from a guy who claimed he bricked it trying to install a font pack so I figured let me buy it and restore factory image. Didn't work. I tried flashing manually, the process went fine, but it it still turns off at google splash image. I tried Wugfresh toolkit also to no avail. He said he rooted it, installed custom recovery and euphoria os rom. Then he installed the fontpack, it told him to reboot to apply changes, and it wouldn't boot past google screen after that. It doesnt even get to the boot animation. It just shuts off. When its off and u plug in the charger it does the same thing, you just keep seeing the charging symbol over and over because its constantly rebooting. Its a T-Mobile Nexus 6 BTW, model number XT1103. I spoke to my friend who has a local repair shop and he says there is nothing out for his z3x or his other boxes for the nexus 6 because it is such a new and rare device. His theory is that the partition tables have been corrupted somehow and need to be rewritten manually. Please any help would be appreciated. I can promise a hefty $$ reward for any individual that helps me recover it to a working state.
can you get a custom recovery on successfully.........?
did you flash the stock image manually?

Yes I tried pushing the stock recovery individually and it succeeded in the command prompt, but won't enter recovery, just shows google and shuts off. I tried pushing twrp too but same outcome. Yes I had flashed the stock image manually, everything flashed well from what the command promt said, but when it should reboot to recovery after flash to wipe, just shuts off.

Please! Anyone!
by manually do you mean flashing all the separate parts of the stock image separately, system, boot, recovery, cache and so on..........
I don't know what else to do after going through with that process.....
Make sure you have the latest fastboot by updating SDK Manager. Then reflash bootloader then reboot back to bootloader to reset. Then proceed to flash each partition again. Directions below.
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader.img <-- rename bootloader to this to make it easier
fastboot flash radio radio.img <--- again rename to make easier
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash cache cache.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fasyboot flash system system.img
Hope this helps.
I'm a total newb here so take what I tell you with a grain of salt. I had your exact same problem on my Nexus 5. Every single thing you just described is what happened to my N5. And just like your N6...I was able to boot up into recovery (stock and TWRP), I was able to flash all the things manually and even used Wug's NRT. But then whenever I tried to actually boot up the device it could never pass the Google logo....basically EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING TO YOU.
What I did to fix everything? Changed my battery. Sounds stupid and totally irrelevant but that did the trick. When I opened up my phone I noticed my battery had a nasty bulge and realized it was defective. Bought a new one for $25 and have never had any issues ever since. I suggest you look at your battery and see if that is the root of your problem. I have heard of the N6 having some batteries expanding and causing the back covers to pop off...this could be related to your problem.
Like I said I am a newb and thought I'd share my experience in the hopes it solves your problem.
Good luck buddy! :good:
my N6 is actually away getting repaired for the exact issue you described, expanding battery [assumed], and cover coming away from the bezel.....
I believe though that if you keep the device plugged into the wall when trying to boot up with this battery defect it will get through the boot, at least in the beginning anyway....
I believe also that if it was a battery issue the device would power off first, as opposed to just sticking on the Google logo.........

Thats too bad. Maybe the device is hosed. RMA for a new one.
Same thing happened to me. As soon as I updated to the newest version of fastboot on my computer, everything worked...

HELP: Bricked XT1254 while unlocking -- can't get to fastboot or recovery

I was following instructions on rootjunky.com for unlocking and rooting. I successfully unlocked bootloader with sunshine app. Then I flashed TWRP and got it running. But TWRP didn't have the swipe to allow changes to system partition on startup, so I thought I needed to flash system image per the rootjunky video. I figured it couldn't hurt even if it wasn't needed. so I flashed the 10 parts of system image per video and then tried to get to recovery but just saw little dead android flash on screen every few seconds. I have tried holding all combinations of buttons but after unlocked bootloader warning comes up I get lying down android that says "No command" that flashes briefly every few seconds. Am I totally screwed?
All the messages in the command prompt window while flashing all 10 of the system chunks looked nominal ("sending system ... OK ... writing system ... OK", and my batch file looked just like the one in the video.
Any help is appreciated.
Wait. I gave up too soon. Looks like I can get back to fastboot. Somehow TWRP got messed up. I just reflashed TWRP. Whew! Looks like system flash was bad. I'll try flashing system again.
No joy. I have TWRP now, but still can't get system running. When I try to reboot to system from TWRP it comes back to TWRP. I had verified md5sum of system before flashing, so I know that file downloaded ok. Also, adb doesn't see phone when in recovery. I'll keep trying stuff.
Update: I double checked the mda5sum on the system image zip and it was (still) good. Then I re-extracted the ten image chuncks and re-flashed. Now I can boot to system from bootloader and all is as it was before this misadventure. Almost. If I power down phone and then power up I get the dead android with the "No command" message. It just comes on and stays on rather than flashing, so that's an improvement. From there I can get back to the bootloader and then select "Start" to boot up the phone. I can live with that, but it's an annoyance. If anyone has any suggestions to how to make it boot up by itself from power on I'd love to hear them.
Reflash your phone with Verizon Software Update http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-116673/ and then flash TWRP (fastboot flash recovery twrp.img)
It does't affect your unlocked bootloader.
Thanks, Aptahar, but I have a new theory. I started a new thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo/help/device-encryption-question-issue-t3283333.

Moto X (2013) XT 1058 soft brick (?) [HELP]

Hi guys.
I have a moto X 1058 which I bought to someone about 3 months ago, it's an used phone so I can't rely on warranty.
I received the phone with Android 5.0, no root, bootloader locked, perfect conditions.
I installed Android 5.1 through an OTA update. Soon after the update, the phone began to boot suddenly every now and then with no apparent reason. Because of this I decided to downgrade to Kitkat 4.4.4 (The rom I downloaded is called: RETAIL-BR_4.4.4_KXA21.12-L1.26_52_cid12_CFC_1FF) (I am from Colombia and the firmware of the phone is from Brazil). I used RSD lite, unlocked the bootloader, USB debug, etc. However the installing took way too long so I booted the phone while it was still installing (If i didn't do this, the installing would have probably taken 8 hours or so, because the system.img file was too big to download to the phone which is why i guess it took RSD so long). Anyways, I don't know why this happened, I just decided to boot it and see what happened. It went in a boot loop. I no longer have access to the bootloader screen. After two boots I can press POWER+VOLUME UP to get access to the screen "Android system recovery". Where the only options are:
reboot system now (takes me to the boot loop again)
apply update from sdcard (does nothing really)
aply update from ADB (My pc won't recognize my device anymore, RSD litle doesn't recognize my device either, I tried with mfastboot manually but it says "waiting for device" and does nothing)
wipe data/factory reset (tried this option as well, but nothing)
wipe cache partition (nope).
What can I do? I think this means my phone is soft bricked. How can I fix this? How can I get the bootloader screen back? I can't even turn off my phone, it's stuck in this bootloop. The only thing i can do is to stay in the system recovery screen, but i don't know what to do next. I don't handle Android systems at all, everything I did was based on youtube tutorials, so I'm a little slow to understand the basic concepts. Can someone explain me?
Thank you very much.
You don't downgrade Motorola phones!
