Checking out the watch while talking to people - Pebble

Hey
Too often I find myself checking out a new notification on my Pebble while talking to people, but they don't know what the Pebble is. And it makes me feel as it looks like I'm checking out the time because I'm so bored from this conversation.
Am I alone?
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk

I think it'll still be the same message if you pull your phone out to check for notification.

I think it's less rude to check the watch but I have no data to back that up lol.. My gf said that they both are rude. She is vice president of a bank or something she knows better than me I'm just an artist
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

Fortunately for me my friends already know what a tech nerd I am so it isn't a big deal.

i use to have that issue but now people tend to notice the bone jarring vibration soundin on my wrist lol

I tend to look at people when they are talking to me so they know that what they are saying is important. I expect the same treatment in return. With that in mind, when I get my Pebble for Christmas from my wife, I will try to look at my notifications in a way as to not insult anyone. I'm a tech and am always am playing with some new tech toy, but when a user comes into my office, I drop everything and listen to them.
Just my two cents

I agree about respecting someone by passing attention, but I found myself in a very casual conversation with a coworker and I received an email so I looked at my watch. Obviously if it's a work related or important email that takes priority over just chatting but I still felt kinda bad checking it.

Got the same look, I was in orientation at my new job, that's what the person doing the orientation thought. Got a comment that pointed to my being rude in a nice way, so I explained that it's a digital watch and I was just checking the notifications etc.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Usually, I'm moving my arm while the notification is scrolling up or I dismiss it quickly, so people see the motion and say "hey, that's one of those new smartwatches, right?"
It's interesting, because at first most people said smartwatch or Pebble; with the release of the Gear, I've been hearing people ask if it's a Galaxy Gear. Power of marketing for ya.

Funny, that's what people ask me also "Is that a Samsung Gear? "
Sent from my QMV7A using Tapatalk

Yeah. I'm getting tired of people asking if my watch is a cruddy gear lol.
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk

I hardly ever got asked about my pebble. Get asked all the time about my gear (even before it 'started to become known')
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I keep getting asked everywhere I go, "is that the phone watch? Can you talk to people, is the speaker loud, can you watch videos, can you take videos?" Ugh. No. It's just for notifications, people!
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Lol first world problems XD

i dont have this problem yet because my friends are aware of my watch and they see the backlight go on every time my watch have something to say to me

Family and friends know about my watch. I tend to get asked by strangers. Which is odd considering I live in NYC lol

Yeah. Not a waste of money in my line of business. I work in the oil field, and a lot of the times, I leave my phone in my truck to keep from breaking it. So it's nice to have a device that lets me know if I'm missing something important.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Actually, it provides more than just notifications. I use it as a stopwatch and a timer for sporting events. I can control music playing from the watch. I use it for Google turn-by-turn navigation. I can control the phone's camera to take pictures. With the upcoming Pebble 2.0, there will be many exciting app development opportunities. The Pebble will be able to pull data across the web without companion apps on the phone. And Bluetooth LE will be implemented, thus reducing battery consumption.

Personally, I don't think it matters. If people want and iphone, they'll get one. It can only bring people in, and if its a flop, then they'll drop it.
Who cares? This is an Android forum.
***WARNING***
1. Do not compare the iPhone4 to any Android device in a positive light (even if you prefer Android).
2. Do not say anything positive about the iPhone4 at all.
If you break those rules, you want to be called an Apple fanboy or an Android hater.
Oh my god...its about sprint...im not going to argue with you anymore. I have already talked to mods and admins via pm about this issue of people that always comment like you do. Sorry pm

See thays the problem with people with iphones...they can't see the other side. They simply just say there device is better. See me along with many others can recognize the good and the bad and explain why the android device is better...there are two sides. No need to be 100 percent ignorant about one

Darn, there goes that sweet 30kbps "3G" download speed I have been enjoying lately.
My wife switched over to AT&T-mobile the other day and bought an iPhone. The OS runs very smoothly and sort of just 'works' like other Apple products. It's also a lot less clunky than the Evo.
Definitely a good phone for the masses.
I doubt many people accustomed to android would enjoy it though. I hate having to click on the settings icon and then search through all the sections of different settings options just to adjust my brightness.
With MIUI I just pull down my notifications bar and change all of that in an instant.
Also, widgets.
The operating systems are both absolutely fantastic after trying both of them in my opinion. It comes down to personal preference completely.
People don't give the iPhone enough credit... It's made so you know how to use it out of the box, which is what most people who have cell phones want.
We all, at xda, know about rooting and modifying our phones to make them do things they weren't originally intended to do... But you all have to realize... The majority of people with cell phones don't know how to do all of this modifying, and they probably don't care to...
Would I get an iPhone... Probably, if it had/gets a bigger screen. Am I dying to rush out and buy one... No. I like Android.
Agreed, I never thought about getting an eyephone because I don't like Fruitco. , but if I did it would need a much bigger screen, and 4g

Apple's most successful(and irritating) product: meet the iSmug

Hi all,
i have been using this forum for some months after I got my amazing android phone. I am happy there is finally competition for good phones that are not iphones. I do not like apple's way of doing business and definitely the smugness of most people who get an iphone and think their coolness has gone off charts.
You know what I mean? People who have a need to show off their iproducts in public? I am so happy i have an android. Android people are so much fun to talk to and cool to discuss wasy to improve their phone.
Apple's best product has been the ismug What do you think? do you know what i am talking about?
Message to the moderator: i hope this is the right forum(if not please move it)
that is so true! i personally appreciate the quality of apple products, however i believe that apple products are incredibly overpriced, and their biggest advantage is their biggest downfall: Apples iron grip on their software
Lemme tell you a short story.
I am on a trip to Athens the other day and,as everyone in a large city,I used the subway to go to my destination.Entering the train,I found a seat next to a guy who looked like being 20-25 years old.He didn't seem geeky at all in fact.I sat next to him,but then he did something he shouldn't have.He pulled an iPhone 4 out of his pocket!Oh sh!t.There was also a girl sitting right in front of us,in a seat looking towards us.She told him "Nice phone you have there"(She had an old Sony Ericsson btw).He found a chance to show off then. And then, after I had lost my temper,I pulled my Galaxy S 2 out of my pocket and started playing with it.He looks at it,his eyes go wider than usual and awe was obvious in his expression. The girl(a beauty in fact) turns to my side and says "Your phone is nicer than the iPhone".Then I started to show off.The games, the screen, the effects, everything was better. That iSmug next to me turned white and got off at the next stop. The girl and I had a...nice time after that btw.
And what's the moral of the story?Android ftw!
Tolis that is an amazing story.
i think the only way to strike back at the apple cult is to make fun of their smugness
ps hi from thessaloniki
ps 2 Galaxy S ii is great
Most of the people think iProducts are COOL. It has now become a factor of an individual's "coolness".
Then someone pulls out their android phone and they're like, "Is that samsung?", "Bleh".
I am bored of listening: you have a Samsung? It looks like an iclone...;
Haha, Tht was funny and intersting at the same time

This douchebag in my boy scout troop once compared his 80 gigabyte iPod to my 2 gigabyte Samsung YP-T9. Another person pulled out his 8 gig Nano and harassed me about mine being inferior. Got into a fight and quit scouting for good. Mine had an FM radio and Bluetooth.

How would you handle this awkward situation?

Well I have my setup at my parents house so that I can remotely access their computer at any time (VNC client). They aren't the most tech savvy so it's a benefit to me so I can "fix" any problems or do general maintenance on the machine. Well this is the second time this week I randomly go to log on and notice firefox minimized with two active windows for porn sites...
Awkward much? My parents are happily married over 30 years but my dad's retired so he's home during the day while my mother is working.
I just politely covered his paper trail these two times (close it and delete cookies/browsing history/etc.).
Would you say something to your dad or just play dumb??? I'm not suspicious of anything bad but it just seemed really weird to stumble on.
It's just awkward for you really, isn't it. I've stumbled upon various things whilst fixing other people's PCs, or once when wiping down a PC for a deceased friend's family. My opinion is to just act as if you never saw it. I just don't see the point in the embarrassment for either party. That's my opinion anyway.
The way you handle this is closely related to the kind of relationship you have with your father. If it was my father, after laughing a lot I would even call him and recommend him the best porn sites across the web
But if the relation is more "serious" you should just ignore what happened. I don´t think that is something you should worry about.
I'd ignore it if I were you. It will feel more awkward when he knows that you know.

Application idea

I think it would be nice and very secret agent like if there was an app for the gear that would allow you to leave your phone on the table say at work or dinner and you could walk off and your phone would record everyone around your phone.
What would be cool is if it would allow you to playback the audio live on your gear. This way u could hear the stories that go on while you are out of the room. I could think of some situations where this could come in very handy.
Also, why is there no stock calculator? That is one of those things that are meant for this type of watch. Anyone remember the old calculator watches from the 90s? Lol

gear is really abandoned when it comes to official software support, just look at the amount of apps in samsung app store. close to zero.. and the apps that are there are really poor. keep in mind that gear is already for few months on the market.
there is a calculator app made by one of the XDA users, and it works really well.
I don't know about clandestine audio recordings lol... in most countries that follow commonwealth laws, such recordings are actually a criminal offense punishable by law! Unless you are actually taking part in the conversation, you cannot record audio. I'd be pretty upset if I found out a friend/family member/business associate had spied on me in such a manner.

What about not recording, but just relaying the audio? I know in the state of Idaho and Wyoming it is lawful as long as one party is aware of the recording. But if it isn't "recording" just replaying the sound, it might fall under different rules. It would be like using the super hearing aids/laser amplification that you can by so you can hear conversations from far away. You can buy those things from magazines here, they might not work that great, but they do help on hearing farther than normal to listen in.

Tapatalk

Hello everyone
I can no longer read the forum from my Oppo via the tapatalk application, why? does anyone have the same problem?
Tapatalk integration has been removed. It won't work anymore. We have a new XDA app: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...rolling-out-now.4199599/page-37#post-84148669
Now that is a name I have not heard in a long, long time. I was an early Tapatalk user. Bought it when they had a paid version. Thought it was great. Since then, many forums have adopted a mobile view that is more than sufficient for light mobile use. Not quite as good as Tapatalk, though.
Tapatalk had two major issues before it started trying to swindle its own users. One, if you paid (them) for the app, they would stop serving ads from the forums, costing the forum operators money. Two, the forum owners had to install a Tapatalk backend onto their forum, and that always had issues. So forum owners were going out of their way to do something which not only did not benefit them, but it cost them money in ad revenue. Then Tapatalk started cheating its paid users by de-listing the paid app and pushing a freemium one in its place.
Tapatalk can take a flying leap.
That said, sad to see the XDA app that replaced it is not on the iOS App Store. While I still love Android in general, I'm an iPhone guy now. I used to be an iPhone hater, so it's kind of funny, but the whole smartphone wars thing was overblown, it was never really any good for anybody except the corporations, who loved it when people would swear off one brand, only to buy into another, and push the fanboys deeper into their trenches. Today, my tech loyalty is only to myself — that is, "what tech is best for me?". And, this year, a $250 iPhone SE 2020 was what was best for me. It's not the fastest or prettiest thing out there, but it does calls, texts, and music, which is all I really need anyway. (And I got the red one, so it's pretty damn sexy.) And it's an iPhone, so it's gonna get updates for five or six years, because that's how they roll. Still, I never got the hang of forums on phones, outside of Tapatalk, so, I'll probably stick to desktop usage regardless.

Exactly my sentiment. I ditched the Android after more than 10 years... And for good now after getting tired of all the Samsung crap and constant lagging and planned obsolescence... And I'm quite happy with the iPhone despite being a real hater of Apple for the way they did things and their pricing. It seems they got beaten to it at last by Samsung. Anyway I loved Tapatalk for reading the XDA and commenting. And this move is kind of annoying especially as an app for XDA is missing on iOS. I guess I'll have to use the forum only on my PC from now on...
