Can/should I buy the Moto X? - Moto X Q&A

Hi everyone,
I will be travelling to the States next month and thought it would be an opportune moment to buy the Moto X. So I just have a few questions...
1) Can I purchase the Moto X with a debit card? The Moto Maker only mentions using a credit card
2) I understand that shipping is free, but are there any taxes to be paid on top off the off-contract price? I will be living in North Carolina so should I expect their state tax to be applied to the price?
3) This is not so much question as request for advice: by the time I am ready to buy the Moto X, it will be around late January, do you think the price of the Moto X (developer edition) will have lowered by then? If not, do you still think it's worth me buying the Moto X or should I hold out for it's successor? I will only be in the US until May so I'm not sure if this is even possible. Don't want to return to the UK only to find out that Moto X '2' is US only as well!
Would really appreciate your answers/advice. Thanks in advance.

If the debit card functions as a credit card (has MC/Visa symbol), the online purchase treats it like a credit card.

After some trial and error, i think sales tax is applied to all orders.

I wouldn't hold out for the dev edition to drop in any amount. i'm betting it will sell out before it drops. you might have better luck trying to find a used Dev Edition for less.

Technology (especially mobile devices) have a short shelf life. if you constantly worry about the next best thing, you'll never purchase the device you really want. Even if they release an "X2" next year, who's to say there will be many changes to make the switch worth it?

Thanks for responding 640k.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'trial and error' - did your order come with sales tax? If you don't mind me asking, how much was this? I will be living and purchasing from North Carolina which has a sales tax of 7.5%, are you saying that this will be applied on top of the total price at checkout?
Appreciate your support.

Sales tax will be added per the ship to address.

If you will be in NC and you buy from the Motorola website while your card is an international visa debit not issued in the US. The purchase will not follow through, this is more likely to do with them using the AVS.
I wouldn't expect the X2 to be making a release already.

$100 credit for the lack of support

Last month Motorola promised to give a $100 credit to anyone who bought a 2011 device that would not be upgraded to the latest version of Android. The program will start in the United States "this fall," the company said, and expand to the rest of the world later.
$100 credit for the lack of support! that's the minimum!

They didn't offer 100$ just like that. There was a catch, a big one.
For a mere 100$ you had to surrender your old expensive Motorola phone, and buy one of their new expensive ones like the razr hd or razr maxx hd. The funny thing is that the customer will again suffer a double blow due to this: having to let go of a phone like photon 4G for just 100$, plus having to buy a new moto phone, which again won't get any update

Yes, that's correct. The "$100 for the lack of support" statement is actually taken out of context, because in reality the offer is to trade in your current phone for a fixed price of $100, when you buy a new one. Those phones are worth way more any day if sold on Craigslist, so what's the point? Double fail...

moto x 1st gen discounts?

with the new generation of the moto x being released, are there any discounts or coupon codes for the first generation moto x through motomaker?
Once you say "any kind" you open yourself up to stuff like this:
http://www.motorolatradein.com/
I ran through the questionnaire and it offered me $60 for mine. Needless to say when you can get 3 times that much for just the screen that's not a very good offer.
I'd wait a while. I'm sure something better will be offered.
I am on Republic Wireless. They have always sold the Moto X for $299 off contract but they won't have it as early as other carriers due to their hybrid WiFi/cell ROM, which takes some extra time to roll out. If you want inexpensive service ($40/mo. is their most expensive plan) and are willing to do your own tech support you may want to consider them.
There are caveats to consider. So search the site for "caveats" and you will see what they are.
thanks. I'm looking for an off-contract gsm 64gb version. motomaker had a $100 off coupon a few months ago, just wondering if another coupon exists thats still valid.
Was wondering the same myself.
Probably, but too late, I already preordered the new Moto G. I'm interested in that dual speakers. It'll make a good backup device.
I'm also waiting for discounts! I don't like that they made the new Moto X big so I'm sticking with the old one!
I think all the discounts were the ones already run the last few months. It sounds like many configurations of the original X (TOX?) are already sold out. I think they have been doing pretty decent inventory control for a while in anticipation of the changeover. I could be wrong, but a huge fire sale on large volume would surprise me. I know configurations, such as 64 GB, for some services are already sold out.

I just placed an order and the estimated delivery is on 9/30/2014
I hope its a lot faster than that. However, the Amazon sales links make me feel like technically the phone isn't "officially released" state-side. I couldn't even place an order for the Shell I wanted because they were "pre-orders". Basically Motorola wants you to order the phone without accessories, and then pay for shipping for that order. Lame!

That is why I'm still hesitant to make a purchase right now because it seems like it hasn't officially launched here in the US. I'm still hoping for a 16GB to be available, although US moto website has set the capacity to 8GB.
In stock at Amazon now.

[Q] UK Release Date??

Does anyone know when the new X will be available in the UK?
I'm just waiting for the Buy button to become available so I can press it.

From what I have heard it will be before the end of the month. Amazon will have stock from the 30th for standard 16GB models.
I would take a guess and say that the option to buy direct from Motorola through Moto Maker will come this week with delivery within 7-10 working days.
you can now buy it in germany but the website doesn't allow shipping to holland, looks like i am out of luck
I hope it comes this week as I'm after a 32GB model and don't mind pre-ordering it.
Anyone any the wiser yet? I find it confusing the amazon uk page has the resin back one to be released on the 30th, and the leather one to be released on the 15th oct....?
The basic 16GB one has now gone on sale in Amazon UK.
Still no order button on Moto Maker site yet.

It says shipping from October 7th. I think there will be a slight delay as it has also been the case in the US for Moto Maker orders. There seems to be a part backlog from China.
Yeah true
I've just pre ordered a black leather one from Clove.co.uk - expecting to dispatch Oct 3rd I'd think it'll be delayed further but lets see
Really desperate for this phone too. I've been waiting for far too long.
Amazon UK, Clove, Mobilephonesdirect, all have the 16GB models.
I'm looking for the 32GB one...
Does anyone know if US warranty will be honored in the UK?
Thinking of ordering the 32GB from motomaker in the US.
Fair enough, i've found 16GB (well 10GB actual) is ok for me. Are you sure you can even order from the US motomaker? I tried just now and its 'locked' to US when selecting country to ship to...

I've got a friend who can mail it to the UK.
So if US warranty works in the UK, I wouldn't mind ordering it from there.
Since the OTA unlocks all LTE bands, so it should work with LTE networks here.
I asked Motorola when the Moto Maker 32GB edition will become available but they said they're not allowed to say.
Unlocked Mobiles has it for £395, but I don't know how much stock they have. Can't see anyone else with any at all.
I have been repeatedly tweeting Motorola UK and US asking for a release date for both the standard and MotoMaker models, but they say nothing other than "soon". This is a really, really bad launch. Worse even than the 2013 Moto X. Feels like they don't want anyone to buy one
Ordered mine from Motomaker last night. Estimated delivery is 13th October. It's expensive, but with no 5" Nexus coming it's the best way for me to get L, and I loved the original so we'll see how it goes. I've been light on the customizations so I can always sell it on if I don't like it.
Good idea
Ordering mine through moto maker tonight. Cancelled my order with clove as I'd prefer some customisation, I'll post my estimated delivery time here. Does anyone know which courier they use?
Cheers

I was going to go for the turquoise as it looks really nice in the photo on the Motorola site, but I don't know whether to go for the white or black front. I'm also looking at the Royal Blue back but the previews on Moto Maker aren't particularly good.
I'll update if I get a shipping notification. Ordered about an hour after it going live and there is such a dearth of hype on this device that I'm hoping I'll be front of the dispatch queue.
They've really flopped with this launch. Imagine if Apple sold a similar concept - design your own device. Everyone would go bonkers!
Apparently Clove has Black Resin and the White/Bamboo one in stock today, so if people want one sooner that might be the way to go. The black one actually doesn't look nearly as boring as I thought it would.
Also - really hoping that they send us the European model with the correct LTE bands. I've heard that the US Pure Edition doesn't have support for 3's LTE which needs bands 3 and 20.
The Moto Maker UK site is now allowing orders to be processed. There is now a Buy button.
Just waiting for my damn credit card to arrive!!!!

[Q] Which Moto X (Verizon XT1096) on Amazon should I purchase at full price?

I am on Verizon and I want to keep my unlimited data plan but I have Amazon gift cards that I want to use against the phone so getting it at full price from Verizon is not what I want to do. I'm trying to figure out which one of these Amazon listings are legit for the Verizon off contract phone. I would post links but my account is still too new. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
As long as you select the off contract option (should be $549.99 new) you'll be fine.
I see the $549.99 off contract phone. Is this the normal price? When I look at purchasing the Moto X on Motorola's website it comes out to $500 ($534 with tax + shipping). Any idea of why this is? Thanks.

Is the one you are looking at 16gb or 32gb? The 16gb is $500 from Moto and the 32gb adds an extra $50. That could account for the extra cost. Or it could just be the seller marking it up.

Looks like the price went down since we're talking about it. I see $526.99 for the "Without a Service Plan" option.
