Can anyone tell me about this old book? - Off-topic

I have a book published in 1793. Its a compact medical book.
I cannot find any info on the author. Publisher. Or even the book itself. I'm at a lost which is why I'm coming here.
Is it worth anything? Is it rare? What do I have here?
Can anyone put me on the trail at least?
Sent from my SM-N900P

Wow. That is pretty old! I would check your local area/city and see if you can hunt down a historian. Try at universitys, If you can find a professor they may be able to tell you where to go next, or better yet reference you to someone who specializes in old books

How would i go about doing this?
Sent from my SM-N900P

Try going to a uni or college and ask the receptionist if you can arrange a meeting with a history professor, or better yet, the college/uni may have a website where you can find contact details for the professors. Try using that to contact them directly, telling them about the book

Thank you. I'm hoping its worth a fortune hah.
Its amazing to hold something so old in your hand.
1793. Damn. Its leather. It has stitching. It was well built.

And I thought the books at my uni's library were old o.o

I know right lol?

Wikipedia on the author:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Elliot_(scientist_and_physician)
"John Elliot MD (1747 – 22 July 1787) was a physician and scientist in eighteenth-century London who was the first person to conjecture that different parts of the retina respond to particular colours of light. However, he was obsessed with Mary Boydell, daughter of the publisher John Boydell, and in 1787 was arrested for attempting to murder her. Although acquitted of attempted murder, he starved himself to death while awaiting trial for assault in Newgate Gaol."
Here's a book about John Elliot M.D:

Don't expect it to be worth much. Even First Editions don't sell for much more than a few hundred pounds and i bet they are in great condition. See here for comparison:

Your Georgian book
Hello,
The book you have was written by Sir John Elliot MD. A different Dr John Elliot to the one who tried to assassinate my ancestor. Same era. Different person. Hope this helps.

Apple's most successful(and irritating) product: meet the iSmug

Hi all,
i have been using this forum for some months after I got my amazing android phone. I am happy there is finally competition for good phones that are not iphones. I do not like apple's way of doing business and definitely the smugness of most people who get an iphone and think their coolness has gone off charts.
You know what I mean? People who have a need to show off their iproducts in public? I am so happy i have an android. Android people are so much fun to talk to and cool to discuss wasy to improve their phone.
Apple's best product has been the ismug What do you think? do you know what i am talking about?
Message to the moderator: i hope this is the right forum(if not please move it)
that is so true! i personally appreciate the quality of apple products, however i believe that apple products are incredibly overpriced, and their biggest advantage is their biggest downfall: Apples iron grip on their software
Lemme tell you a short story.
I am on a trip to Athens the other day and,as everyone in a large city,I used the subway to go to my destination.Entering the train,I found a seat next to a guy who looked like being 20-25 years old.He didn't seem geeky at all in fact.I sat next to him,but then he did something he shouldn't have.He pulled an iPhone 4 out of his pocket!Oh sh!t.There was also a girl sitting right in front of us,in a seat looking towards us.She told him "Nice phone you have there"(She had an old Sony Ericsson btw).He found a chance to show off then. And then, after I had lost my temper,I pulled my Galaxy S 2 out of my pocket and started playing with it.He looks at it,his eyes go wider than usual and awe was obvious in his expression. The girl(a beauty in fact) turns to my side and says "Your phone is nicer than the iPhone".Then I started to show off.The games, the screen, the effects, everything was better. That iSmug next to me turned white and got off at the next stop. The girl and I had a...nice time after that btw.
And what's the moral of the story?Android ftw!
Tolis that is an amazing story.
i think the only way to strike back at the apple cult is to make fun of their smugness
ps hi from thessaloniki
ps 2 Galaxy S ii is great
Most of the people think iProducts are COOL. It has now become a factor of an individual's "coolness".
Then someone pulls out their android phone and they're like, "Is that samsung?", "Bleh".
I am bored of listening: you have a Samsung? It looks like an iclone...;
Haha, Tht was funny and intersting at the same time

Doesn't work here in the NYC metro. I whipped my G2 out playing some game and blasting my music so everyone could hear, but then I look around and everyone has an iPhone out. Only a few android devices. And crap, I was gonna flash a new rom tonight.

This douchebag in my boy scout troop once compared his 80 gigabyte iPod to my 2 gigabyte Samsung YP-T9. Another person pulled out his 8 gig Nano and harassed me about mine being inferior. Got into a fight and quit scouting for good. Mine had an FM radio and Bluetooth.

Anyone else hate the holidays?

I appreciate the idea behind the holidays, but since those ideas are mostly lost on sales and media hype plus the fact I'm a miserable pos, add in personal problems, I f***** hate holidays. I know I'm not alone. Or am I? I say f*** fake smiles and lies. Everyone just stay home and order Chinese food.

I'd go mental without the holidays. Working in a place you don't overly enjoy means you cherish any day you get away from the place.
I love the holidays. Lots of classic movies being shown on the TV.

Also this
I don't hate the holidays, but I do hate what they have become. It's just another excuse to guilt-trip people with little or no money into parting with what they do have, just to line the pockets of some fat git who owns a shop or two. I've tried asking people that normally get me gifts not to get me anything, but they just ignored that and bought me stuff anyway. This year I've asked that they donate to a charity of my choice instead. Let's see how that goes down.
To me, it should be about a time of celebrating and enjoying the company of family and friends - people who you care about. It's not about giving gifts. That's just commercial crap that's been drummed into us since birth.
But yes. Drunk for days

Of course, they won't want to give to charity because charity doesn't give back. People need to get away from this 'give-to-receive' culture. As you said, everybody's spending money they don't have and lining the pockets of those who do already have it.
Give love, give kindness, give hugs... but if i need socks i'll go buy them myself thank you very much!

That's the thing - I'm still gonna buy gifts for people as I don't want to upset anyone that expects it. I find it quite ironic that I'm the one that decides to go against the "make the rich richer" idea, but I'm still the one that ends up buying gifts for people.
So anyway, are we talking about all holidays here, or is it just the international codeword for Christmas?

All holidays. I'll even go one step further, and include any family/social events where people who don't like each other fake it and act all cheery.

I used to hate holidays, but then i realised that as long as you stay far away from everyone else in the world, holidays are actually awesome! My advice, if it looks like you're going to be surrounded by people and unable to get a minute to yourself, go book into a nice hotel room and stay there until it's all over!
Thankfully i have sanctuary at home and don't get disturbed. Holidays are just bonus time off work!
I don't care for holidays either. It's like a mandatory hang-out. If I wanted to be around someone, then I'd be around them. Why would I want to pretend and force it?
I don't want people buying me stuff that I didn't want in the first place, and then I can't even return it to the store because 1. it's not customary to give the receipt with a gift and 2. they'll be upset if I get rid of it.
I don't want to have to try and guess what item each person would like me to buy them, only to have them interpret my choice of gift as if there's some hidden meaning behind why I chose that particular gift.
Holidays/celebrations just seem full of forced feelings, unnecessary traditions, and reluctance to go against what everybody else is doing because of the fear of being that one person everybody's talking about. 'He said he doesn't want anybody to buy him any gifts for Christmas, and he doesn't even celebrate his birthday or New Year's. Weeeeird!'
When I accomplish a long sought-after goal, or one of my friends/family get some sort of really good news or something, I don't mind celebrating it. But I would celebrate because I genuinely see a reason for it. How is the fact that it is the date that you were born on X number of years ago equate to candles, cake, ice cream, and gifts? It seems a little OCD to me to keep track of dates like b-days, anniversaries, holidays, and the like. But it is overlooked in the name of celebration.
It's a mixed emotions for me. Like what the other poster said it's like forcing yourself to be with someone you don't really want to be with. But there are times where I get to meet a mutual friend of a family, which most of the time are really nice people.
well, I personally love the holidays. I love having a whole week off to get away from school and spending time with family. I also love the snow (which doesn't apply to people who live in hot areas lol.)
I don't mind gifts but it does make me feel kind of guilty that people spend so much money on them when that money could go to places like charity.
I hate holidays, and the fact that I work in a store that already had christmas decorations and sweets in goddamn september doesn't help.
On the other hand, holiday food FTW.

Need help looking for a new job

Not sure if there is a post for this already, or not? But what better place to try and network for tech job seekers than here on XDA, where tech is king? And where fellow enthusiasts can help each other.
Admins, if there is a better post, or place to put this in, please do so? Or maybe add a new forum for job networking? Because these days, it is tough finding a new job. Not everything is posted anymore. Now, you need places like LinkedIn, or other social areas, like XDA, to look for someone on the inside.
With that said, I will begin.
I am a desktop support tech, have been for near 20 years now. If you can call resurecting dead systems a "miracle", then I work miracles But all the jobs that I see advertised, or offers sent to me, are for help/service desk positions. Completely opposite of what I do. To be chained to a desk/phone the whole day, working from scripts, and with creativity prohibited, that is not for me. It is my creative mind, used to resolve the hard issues that others give up on, that makes me the great tech that I am. I am the one you can breath a sigh of relief, when you see me walking to your desk to fix your problem. I am there for you. And I enjoy being there for you. But right now, I need the help.
I am in the Irving area, the west side of Dallas, between Dallas and Ft Worth. I really need a true desktop support job, badly. But what I would really want most, is to find a job back in Southern California! Preferably in the Orange County area, but would take any desktop support job in SoCal, except for downtown LA. And to show how serious I am, I would be willing to pay a cash bonus to anyone who can get me a job to come back home to SoCal!
Please PM me with your contact info, and I will send you my resume and details. I truly appreciate any help that is given. Times are very tough these days, and help is very much needed.
If you need to check on me, I am always in the EVO 3D forums. Chogardjr, chad.goodman, Lucklui, scroosler, and others can vouch for me there that this is not some spam post.
Thank you all.

I see you are from the UK? That is my dream vacation, but never had a chance to go there In my old days, I used to race Spitfires (68, 72, 74), GT6 (73), English Ford Cortina GT6 (68), and two Lotus Europa S2's (69 Jimmy Clark Special and the 72 had a Renault Gordhini hemi race engine). Those were the days, fun cars that were true sports cars. My real dream job would've been to work for Lotus
And thanks for the tip.
Sorry OP, XDA is not the place for posting your resume, but I like your suggestion on adding a "Networking" forum and will add it to our list of site suggestions. Who knows...it could happen.

Free Babies Thread (or stuff for them)

I'm all about free stuff. All my computer programs are open source. In a sucker for by one get one free. I clip coupons. And now with a kid on the way, I'm all about the free goods companies send you.
So if you've got one or one is coming, let's share the sites/places/businesses to get the goods.
Similac, the formula company will send lots of liquid and powder formula along with some bottles.
similac.com
Pampers, the diaper company will send a couple diapers. But they do hook you up with tons of coupons.
pampers.com
So what have you found? Share the wealth, Bogart.

When Emma got pregnant she went online and looked for baby clubs and expectant mother sites, loads of them. We ended up with loads of stuff, from changing bags to talc, bathing lotions and potions, outfits etc. Best thing to do is get online, look for shops with baby clubs etc you'll find loads of stuff.
