Block speaker sound out. - Nexus 5 General

Not sure if this deserves a separate thread, but just noticed that if i completely block the actual speaker (one on the side) with my finger the sound ends or (or seems to end up) coming out from the earpiece instead. If this is intentional, that is SO cool, can anyone verify?

How is it cool? I hate it especially when playing a game lol
Sent from my Nexus 5

I don't think this is the case. Once the bottom left speaker holes are blocked the music just radiates from the phone in general, not one specific point like the ear piece speaker. Maybe the headphone jack adds to what you're hearing?
NX5

Not intentional. You're just hearing it resonate throughout the phone, as jbdan said.
Not sure how it would detect such an event, but it wouldn't be such a bad idea to reroute audio to the earpiece speaker if the bottom speaker is blocked. Sometimes my bottom speaker gets blocked if the phone sits at just the right angle in my tylt charger, I'm afraid I won't hear my alarm one of these days.

Aww . I had thought of that, but was hoping it was some weird random feature. Makes sense though.

I hate the speaker alignment. If it would give great sound but I can't even hold it horizontal like my old phones without muting the sound

It was much more comfortable to just put one finger on each side lying on the phone and with the thumbs on the lower side than holding it with your fingertips.

I wouldn't purposefully block the speaker. The speaker in our device is pretty cheap, and I'm sure the added pressure from blocking the holes might damage it, and decrease the sound quality even more.

Blocking the speaker grill holes is not going to do any damage to anything
My "flip it over" comment earlier was serious. If you flip it over it places the speaker on the top left and you are less likely to block it. There was a tongue-in-cheek thread about this a while ago, but despite all the silly comments it is the easiest way to solve the blocked speaker problem.

I don't get why everyone says the speaker is bad. It's as good if not better than my nexus 4 was. That was about on par with my note 1. Do you guys expect boom sound or something?

Do all Nexus 4's crackle?

Sorry for bring up this topic again, but I'm just wondering about the earpiece.
I just had my 212k replaced with a 304k, and it crackles the exactly the same as the old one. Are there really any crackle free nexuses? (it doesn;t really bother me, I'm just wondering if they're all like this).
Some are.
Mine has the crackle has well.

Weekday do you mean by crackle? Mine doesn't have any speaker distortion at all.

Nop mine doesn't crackle however dust gets accumulated and i can't find any way to clean it.

Mine doesn't as far as I can tell. Perhaps your ears need to be really sensitive or something but I definitely don't notice any sort of hissing noise

Actually it is literally some type of sound frequency and it kind of hisses in a way and crackles in a electronic type of way, basically just put your ear to it and you may get some sound.

No crackling here, but it really annoys me that I feel the back of the device vibrate when the other side is speaking through the earpiece. it reminds me of some cheap Nokia phones for old guys.
Mine also crackles. It is very quiet, bit can be heard when I put the speaker near to my ear

Mine crackles slightyl on calls but most of all when shooting video. I get really loud crackles for about 4 seconds at the start.

The Nexus 5 Defects Thread

Seeing how Nexus devices are somewhat more prone to defects than others (especially the 7 line?), how have your brand new Nexus 5s fared now that some of you have had the chance to play with it a little?
The power button is jiggly/wobbly and makes an audible 'clicky' sound when I tap on the screen near it or shake the device.
oh no here we go with the rattle noises

The buttons are ceramic, and a bit more weighty than the vinyl/rubber/plastic on other phones. I plan on a Diztronic case anyway, which softens the buttons/push action and quiets the rattles.

Any movement of the phone, not just a deliberate shake.
If anyone else has a nexus 5 and could weigh in on this thread it would be great. Just to find out if most peoples are the same and put this to bed early. Either its a one off fault or its just the way its supposed to be.
Would be great to hear from those that have the device and can give an honest answer to

Honestly I have the device and it makes such a tiny wobble and noise that we can call this device a success: if all you can pick out is that tiny nit pick from anything you can possibly find then you're just looking for problems.
I got nothing else. Battery is good, camera is good, phone feels fantastic in my hands, no software bugs, no weird earpiece buzz from n4, no multi touch issues, GPS works, Bluetooth works, anything else? I don't have USB otg to test...

Mine has pretty poor back light wash out at angles over 30 degrees or so. Its not strictly a poor viewing angle because there is no colour shift. Other than that it seems fine, no rattling, no obvious bugs.

Can you confirm that if you hold the power and volume buttons in place, then shake the phone, that the rattle goes away?
If it's still present then the rattle is most likely the camera module - my S3 has a similar rattle.
Upon further inspection yes my Nexus 5 power button does 'rattle' but its such a small niggle that I will ignore it, simply put if I tap (firmly!) the top right of the screen I can hear the rattle of the power button but thats it, no real backlight bleed nor any dead pixels battery seems pretty damn good and the earpiece is brilliant quality, need to check the mic mind.

Rear Speaker?

My rear Speaker is really weak. Talking on speakerphone with any background noise renders it useless. Is this just my model or others have the same issues?

Mine is pretty similar. As well as my friend who has one on T-Maybe (hahaha). It vibrates at full volume.
It's a bummer. I don't expect the world from every phone but at this point the least we could get in such a premium is a decent speaker. Kind of pisses me off.

I have to agree on it being a loud speaker. Earlier this evening I just streamed from music from the Play Music app and it was remarkably loud and clear.
Sure, it was no BoomSound and you could for sure tell that the sound source was a cell phone, but it was definitely one of the better speakers I've encountered on a phone.
Put me in the unhappy with the S5 speaker column. yes, it can be "loud" but it often seems "tinny" with distracting vibrations through the back cover that make the device seem hollow. subjective opinion obviously

On my second one. Both, same observation as yours. Loud as Hell, but "tinny" and the '"rattle" when turned up is really, really disturbing. Also, does anyone else feel a "bumping" of the speaker through the center of the back of the phone when on loudspeaker and/or playing media? It's almost like the phone's back is going to blow off due to this heavy beating from the sound through the back-casing. Again, second specimen; same issue(s)...

speaker Issue

Can someone check to see when playing music through your speaker if it comes out through both sides or just the left side. If you notice the speaker has two openings on each side. I assume that sound should come out from both sides. Cover the left side and let me know what happens.
Thanks in advance.
Only comes out the left for me as well, must be a cosmetic right speaker
Wanted to make sure that my phone is not defected. Thank you gman.

How annoying, but still enjoying the phone. Thanks.

Is it just me or speakers are weak?

Got my unicorn today. It is huge and awkward to hold. The screen is okay after selling my Galaxy S4 and using LG G pad 8.3 as a daily driver until I got N6. (I know weird). However, I noticed that the speakers are not really loud. I thought since it has tow speakers and placed on front, it should be loud. Also, when I call someone and put him on speaker mode, only the top speaker works. The bottom one doesn't. Can someone confirm that please?
Is there anything I can do or tweak to make it louder?
Thanks,

Motorola knows that no one else wants to hear your loud conversations
I solved this issue by using a Bluetooth headset. I have bad hearing due to my time in the military so I need things to be loud(or louder than normal) or I can't hear them.
