I have a unlocked moto x that I am trying to use with a sprint sim card. anyone know how I can get this to work
You will need to be more specific on which Moto X you have. However if it isn't a factory Sprint Moto X I think the chances of it working are extremely slim. Sprint uses CDMA, a normal unlocked Moto X uses GSM.

Well you didn't answer the question at all so its tough to help. The long and short of it is that if you want to use a Moto X with Sprint you need to buy the Sprint version.
I guess I didn't realize Motorola sold more than one type of unlocked moto x. I knew they sold locked ones for each service provider but my understanding was that the developer edition moto x was the only one you could purchase from motorola unlocked...
Sprint doesn't have a developer edition. Only VZW and AT&T make those available to be purchased.
Verizon and Sprint use a different phone technology than other phone companies, called CDMA. To use a phone on those companies, you need a phone with built in support for their CDMA service. CDMA doesn't support removable SIM cards or changing carriers (or even changing phones, without having the carrier switch service to the new phone).
Some (many) phones on those services can also be used on the more common GSM phones services, because both Sprint and Verizon are new using that technology for data. That's where "unlocked" comes in. If you get the unlocked version of a CDMA phone you can use it on other (GSM) carriers. Sprint tend to only unlock phones for international use, not for use by their competitors. I'm less familiar with Verizon.
Either way, to use a phone on Sprint (or on Verizon) you generally need to buy a phone earmarked for that carrier. That is true of the Moto X.
If you can still return that phone, you should do so.

I'm torn between an unlocked X and a cheap, barely used AT&T version. I use both T-Mobile and AT&T and need seamless 4G/LTE on either service.
Are the AT&T bands Pentaband like the Developer Edition if unlocked?
Furthermore, is the T-Mobile version pentaband? At the same price (549) for motomaker, it may make more sense to buy this one as I can customize it and unlock it, using on AT&T/T-Mo at will with no worry about network issues.

I looking at an assignment that would require 6 months in Zelenograd. I have contacted Moto who recommended I pick up a unlocked GSM unit. However, I'm a sprint customer. Does the CDMA X have GMS radios but disabled by sprint? If so, can the X be flashed such that when I travel to Zelenograd I'll be able to use a local sim card? TIA
I am a Rodgers subscriber and have purchased a used Sprint Moto X. I have unlocked it so I could just put in a SIM and go. Is this my best option or should/can I flash this with custom firmware, updated Sprint firmware (KitKat), or switch over to Rogers firmware. Any other Sprint Moto X users in Canada out there? Current software is 161.44.32.ghost_Sprint.en.US

I was under the impression that the unlock of the phone would allow any SIM to be put in. The point of unlocking the phone would be to allow a person to take a phone and use it with any other provider. I do not have the right size SIM to put in but the phone is connected to the Rodgers network right now and I can dial 911 (emergency dial). It could be that I do not understand the definition of unlock and now have a phone I can still only use with Sprint.....

If you went to the Motorola site and did their unlock procedure.... Then you unlocked the boot loader. That won't let you use the phone on another carrier. Unlocking boot loader would be done with fast boot.
If you sim unlocked....you would have had a code from sprint....or somewhere, and when you put the other carrier sim card in....it would ask you for a code, and you would enter the code.
What exactly did you do???
Just the bootloader, should have done more research. There are sites that suggest for a small fee the sim can be unlocked. Can they unlock sprint phones or am I going to have to sell it?

I may be wrong, but since there's an unlock sprint sim bounty thread....I am pretty sure those sites can't unlock sprint moto x's.

No the bounty threads are to unlock the bootloader. As for Sim unlocking, I don't know anything about it related to CDMA network.
According to Wikipedia, Rogers is a GSM network. Sprint is a CDMA network. Therefore the Sprint Moto X will not work with Rogers, unless I'm missing something. There is an exception that Verizon phones are world phones which mean they support CDMA, but their newer phones also have the radio to support GSM, which means their phone are GSM unlocked to work for GSM networks outside of US (from what I understand they prevent it from working with GSM carriers within US unless you sim unlock it).

You say that buying Sprint Moto X isn't option but there is some way to unlock Moto X because there is solutions for Sprint HTC One, Sprint LG G2, Sprint Galaxy S4 and etc so it's don't be hard to make solution to unlock Sprint Moto X too so maybe there could be found developers who will do it I have hope.
P.S. and one news I PM ysabxe for information progress on this project but he say that this thread is not actual for him more I thin cause nobody send him that files what he needed for unlock he need already unlocked Moto X TWRP backup.

Don't trust Wikipedia. Just like the verizon X, the sprint X supports at least quad band gsm for global roaming, which are the same gsm frequencies also used in North America. (I haven't looked into the other frequencies the sprint x supports).
The problem comes in that the Sprint X is sim locked to only use their Sims. You can only get the sim unlock code from sprint directly, no 3rd party sellers seem to have them. Sprint will only give it if you are a current customer, with the X active on your line, and other condiitions are met.... So if you buy a used Sprint Moto X that hasn't been sim unlocked, you are screwed. But if you buy one that has been sim unlocked, you'll be able to get at least basic gsm.

For whatever reason, the only way to sim unlock a Sprint Moto X has been to be a current Sprint customer and get the code from them. For all the posts on XDA asking for Sprint X sim unlock code for those who are no longer Sprint customers, no one has found a way. None of the 3rd party code sellers have a way.

If you are active user look unlocking steps there is always used omadm.apk on Sprint HTC one and Sprint LG G2 so there is way to unlock Sprint X too but need already sprint customer who already have unlocked their Sprint X and need files from already unlocked Sprint X ysabxe was asking make backup and link it on dropbox or some cloud but nobody did it. so it doesn't mean that it is impossible to unlock Sprint X

Again, you're assuming the same method and software used to SIM unlock phones by other makers is how its done on the X too.
While it may not be impossible, I would say its improbable... The X has been out since August yet with all the requests by those looking to SIM unlock the Sprint X, as of today, no one has posted a way to do it, other than be an active sprint customer and request the code from them.
I want to get a Moto X that would work if I decided to switch from T-Mobile to AT&T. My first preference is to buy it from Best Buy (I have some gift cards) but the guy at the store said if I bought a T-Mobile Moto X from them it wouldn't work if I switched to AT&T because it would be locked. From what I understand, T-Mobile can and will unlock this device for me if I ask them (nicely) meaning I could then use it with AT&T. Is my understanding correct?
My other options are to buy one from T-Mobile or get one from Motorola's website. Same question with these phones: Even if they are locked to T-Mobile at first, can I get them unlocked and use them on AT&T?

Friend..the best way to do it, is to purchase an unbranded, no carrier Moto X from Motorola Website..then you can use whomever you wish..I'd suggest the Developer Edition..otherwise you'll probably have to purchase a "branded" model..
Tip: do everything in your power to purchase an "unbranded" unlockable device..
Here is a list of devices that can be unlocked..look in Moto X list..which can be unlocked..I don't see AT&T listed as unlockable..but they do offer the Moto X..but if I was to guess..I'd say theirs is also unlockable.. but verify this before a purchase..
But..if your budget doesn't allow for the price of a Moto XDEV..then certainly consider the new Moto G 4G LTE..the two are VERY similar is size, and the G will run right along side with the X..I have both..and a budget certainly will justify the new Moto G..and its not carrier branded, runs LTE blazing..consider the Moto G..I have one on AT&T..all my devices are now on AT&T..but of course, depends on your area, to which carrier..

I don't know that there is a "T-Mobile Branded" X, and I don't think T-Mobile sells the X directly (at least it isn't on their web site).
Your choice, is the GSM UNlocked (includes T-Mobile sim) from Moto Maker web site, or the GSM Developer Edition... why?
These are the only way to get a Moto X that supports HSPA/HSPA+ over AWS (1700mhz) that T-mobile uses. History or why is this a consideration: When T-mobile started rolling out their HSPA/HSPA+ network, they did so on AWS(1700mhz) and are the only carrier to do so. While they are re-farming their 1900mhz from EDGE to HSPA+ in many areas, that isn't complete, so if the phone doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS, it will fall back to EDGE in those legacy areas which remain.
Now, what is the difference between the GSM Unlocked and GSM Dev Edition? Kind of simple...
The GSM Developer Edition comes only as 32gig with black face, woven white back, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), and says Developer Edition on the back.
The GSM Unlocked (includes T-Mobile SIM) on Moto Maker can be ordered as 16, 32, or 64gig, and the face, back and accents can be customized, along with other customization.
BOTH are SIM unlocked out of the box. Both can be bootloader unlocked, however doing so voids the warranty on the GSM Unlocked version but not the Dev Edition.
Both of these editions support the same GSM/EDGE/GPRS/HSPA/HSPA+/LTE bands and frequencies. In fact, they are the same "board' inside, use the same roms, etc. i.e. other than the look of the outside & customization options, and bootloader unlocking voiding vs not voiding the warranty, they are the same phone. (hence the GSM Dev Edition being the preferred choice so you can unlock the bootloader and easily root it without voiding the warranty).
If you are on T-Mobile today, you could buy the ATT version at no contract direct from Moto, BUT... you can't unlock the bootloader (moto doesn't give out the codes for ATT, Verizon, Republic wireless and a few others), ATT Wont sim unlock it (so you could use with T-Mobile) unless you are their customer for a certain period of time, and it doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS. While the ATT X does support 2 extra LTE bands, those bands are not currently used in the USA.

Yes, that is correct. The only caveat being that if ATT ever starts using those two extra LTE Bands (band 5 and 7) in the USA then the GSM Unlocked will have a slight disadvantage as it doesn't support them (hardware wise).

I bought the T-Mobile/GSM unlocked version from MotoMaker and it's working on my AT&T GoPhone plan no problem. I cut my micro-SIM down to nano and it works in the X just like it did in my Nexus 4. Interestingly I get better signal in many areas on LTE than my N4 got on HSPA+.

I have this device on the AT&T GoPhone plan and very pleased with LTE here in the mountains of NC..out performs my Moto X Dev Edition and Droid Maxx Dev Edition (Verizon) here..

the ebay page of seller says its verizon XT1060 dev edition but then he adds GSM unlocked, i know for a fact that verizon devices are CDMA not GSM. please help.
other question is will i be able to install any rom from the forum in XT1060 or there are limitations. i had some bad experience with my htc one s (i had gotten the C2 variant instead of the original one with S4 ) if anyone wants to have a look at the ebay page here is the link

The phone should say Dev Edition on the back cover. Verizon does use CDMA, but the phones are GSM capable for world use. Once you unlock the bootloader, yes you can install other ROMs, but you may lose some of the core Moto X features like active display and touchless controls that are only available via stock firmware.

Verizon's LTE phones are SIM Unlocked and can be used with 3G/4G/LTE SIMS from GSM carriers. For example, I can put my T-Mobile USA SIM into my XT1060 Dev Edition for Verizon phone, and get T-Mobile service.

The XT1060 does use CDMA, GSM and LTE radios. Its radio code or modem files are different from the other variants (like XT1053, XT1058,etc). So as long as the custom rom you are flashing doesn't include radios, OR tells you how to get your stock radios working, you should be fine.
The Verizon Dev Edition DOES have the verizon logo on the back too. In other words, that may be a "stock" dev edition photo, rather than the actual phone you're buying.
