Help before buying - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've been wanting to buy the Xperia Z1 for awhile now but the thing that's holding me back is whether the "self-cracking" screen issue is common or not. I've seen posts of people complaining about this issue on a few sites. I'm afraid that if I do buy the phone, I'll be one of those unlucky people (all of my past phones except for my Nexus 4 have had hardware related problems) and because Sony apparently refuses to acknowledge this issue, I'd have to put out more money to repair the phone and I don't want that.
I've also seen the other common issues (yellow hue, touch problems, wifi issues, etc.) but they seemed to have fixes so I'm okay about that. It's just this screen issue so I'm asking for your help.
Thanks!

Why is that? I had the original Note and I would have gone for the Note 3 but I want to try out a Sony phone.
Also, upon further research, it seems that this cracking screen issue isn't just exclusive to Sony. Other OEMs such as Samsung are apparently having this issue too.

If you live in London I will change my z1 with note 3 and I pay the difference + extra XD...
Let me explain :
1.the screen quality is good but angel view??? Really really bad.belive me.in daily usage it will kill you
2.few roms and some people loose their phone in flashing new rom.you can see many of them in the froum
Also loosing X-reality after BL unlocking
3.battery life is less than Samsung note 3
4.Note 3 : 5.8" while Z1 is 5inch smartphone (actually 4.5 inch because of virtual soft keys?)
5.Samsung says android 5 will come out for note but sony didn't says that and I don't think that Sony will give android 5 for z1
And
.

.
Enjoy!

1. Depends on whether or not one really cares about the angle. In daily usage, you will most likely have the phone in front of your face, I doubt it'd kill you.
2. People who do not follow the directions properly and do not back up their TA lose their phone and their DRM features.
3. Battery life is just fine on the Z1, most people will have a cable with them at least of the need to charge.
4. The soft key size can be adjusted with a custom ROM or through Xposed.
5. Although Sony hasn't stated anything on 5.0 yet, looking at all of the various Xperia devices that are getting 4.4, I am not too worried about this, and if you are a ROM flasher, this is not an issue.

Or you can see other topic about the people that loose their phone by flashing android 4.3 (((

1. Yeah, I've heard that the viewing angles aren't great at all but I guess it can help stop people from looking at my screen on the train (I hate that).
2. I like to keep my phone the way it is. Not really into flashing Roms and rooting.
3. I guess that's true but I'm not a HEAVY user so it shouldn't matter to me too much.
4. I prefer the on-screen buttons so I'm fine with that.
5. As long as Sony's UI is less heavy and not as intrusive as Touchwiz, I'm happy.
But thanks for the reply! I was considering the Note 3 but I think I'd rather try the Z1.

Sony's UI is very simple and that makes the Z1 a lag free device.

I love mine and love minimalistic android. I can't stand HTC Sense, touchwiz and all that crap. The Z1 is a very impressive device the only thing I don't like are the flaps and how long it takes Sony to roll out updates for unbranded UK phones.

Personally, I thought Sense 5 was a delightful experience. My first impressions of it weren't great but the more I used it, the more I liked it. With Touchwiz, it was the complete opposite. I was excited to see so many features but over time, everything just felt so heavy on my Note. But nothing could beat the smoothness of Stock Android and I'm excited to see Sony preferring the Stock feel rather than something like Touchwiz.

Who is your provider? I'm either getting the optimus g or xperia tl depending on dev support and battery life for the two.

Depends on what you desire in a phone. LTE, Durability, Design, Support, Custom rom support, Screen resolution/PPI, Battery life etc. etc.
I come from a history of HTC phone and I always liked them because they feel more durable. Also, the dev support is very high on HTC and Samsung. When you go for power, you should definitely look at Samsung S3, HTC One X(+) or the new LG Optimus G. Also, if you're interested in getting the latest Android updates, you should keep an eye on the Google (LG) Nexus 4.
I must say that I took a risk in choosing for Sony. The dev support is relatively low and I didn't like their Q1 2012 models Xperia S, U and P. This because I heard negative stories about the battery life, the outdated hardware, the lack of proper support etc. Yet, I must say that I never had a smartphone that operates this smooth, and the battery life is better than HTC's Q4 2011 phones. I own my phone for a couple of days now and I like it more and more.
When I was in Indonesia this summer, the Acro S caught my eye and I have been looking out for the release of the European brother of that phone: the Sony Xperia V. The specs are promising, I like Sony Timescape (more than for example HTC Sense or Samsung Touchwiz) and it promises to be a solid phone (it should be dust and water resistant).
To summarize it all. Keep a lookout on comparization websites, such as phonearena. You can easily compare up to three phones there.
If you really don't know what to pick, I can only recommend to stick with the Nexus releases. You are interested in Android for some reason
Check out my phone list in signature, I can't wait to get myself this xperia t

Dev support for samsung (at least on the aosp/cm front) will drop, samsungs ****ing around with sources, broken code and producing a mess in general is driving devs away. HTC is obviously locking bootloaders in its more recent models and is enforcing less dev-friendly techniques, so dev support will remain strong but it wont beas much fun to "work" with as htc used to be. LG produces **** hardware, I heard. And their custom android implementation isnt that shiny either, I heard (lol, I hear a lot, obviously ). Leaves Sony, which is overall well, behaving goog from a dev perspective and the hardware is ok, good even, albeit not highest top tier. In terms of updates theres rom for improvement. So as the ultimate last, a Nexus device. Latest android, always. Excellent dev support. But limited storage and no expansion possibilities. Make your choice.

If you want a more neutral ICS experience with some great Sony add ons (Walkman, etc.) and like the idea of 13MP photos go for the Xperia T.
If you want top spec and more grunt the S3 is a bit more powerful but you get TouchWiz and Samsung's stamp on it all. Also, the S3 has a much richer selection of custom ROMs.
Personally, lack of SD slot would put me off the OneX before I even opened the box.

I agreed with almost everything you said but this. I am no expert, but I think the major problem isn't hardware... it's their support / drivers/ software. I owned a G2x, and hardware wise it was a treat. However, it was hampered by the lack of source (which has been rectified in the last week or so I believe) code and the NVIDIA drivers for it. Their latest incarnation, the G, is very nice on paper, but alas, it will likely suffer the same fate, which is why the Nexus 4 looks so tempting. Hell, Google trusts their hardware, they just wanted to make a phone everyone would want AND possibly afford. Unlocked no less!
I have sent my T back for repairs, I had some audio stuff go south. That said, I really like that Sony offers the option to unlock bootloaders. I like the feel of the phone and the speed. HTC burned a bridge with me and my Amaze (also just released source code for their WIFI / BT drivers IIRC), so I went Sony, and am not sorry that I did.
EDIT: Oh yea, and the Sony take on ICS is really quite nice. Not bloated, most of the apps I actually WANT to use, and it's well designed IMHO.
Thx everyone =)

No regrets, You have done a good choice, I have TX too, I'm happy with: elegant design, removable battery (very important), SD card slot, good benchmarks, even better compared with phones with quad core processor, a very good 13 Mp camera, easy to unlock, Sony developpers friendly.
Bad: few custom roms, slow process updating, Hope more from developpers.
Previous phones: a lot of Nokia flagships (finished with), and in the last 2 years:Xperia X10, Xperia S and now a beautiful Xperia TX, all unlocked and rooted.
Now got the t, little disappointed with the development level for the phone but the phone it self is ok, not great but ok I guess

[Q] Are you happy with your phone?

I am about to order a new phone in next couple days and still thinking between Xperia and GS3. I know there is new generation of both coming soon, but I would upgrade anyway at the end of the year.
1. How is performance?
2. Signal quality?
3. Build quality?
4. Rom development?
Thanks for all your input!

Carrier-branded phones usually cannot be unlocked officially thru Sony's dev site. Get it from retail store and it's unlockable easily.

1. How is performance?
Using wifi connection at home I do not find using the phone slow compared to a i5 desktop, so I would say great.
2. Signal quality?
Similar to my work BB Bold
3. Build quality?
Good, but I have not pressed the (power) button(s) lots as the phone is new, so usage is still low
4. Rom development?
I have nothing to compare it to, but the chaps here are all knowledgagable and Greg maintains a useful thread with links to many ROMs
I could get the s3 £100 over 2 years and maybe I would go for that (got this phone last week, and the s3 offer came on the w/e). But now I am happy putting that money towards the next upgrade.
Also this phone is a bit smaller, which is good.
Thanks to all, seems owners are quite happy with it which matters the most. I have seen some unfavorable reviews on the net, so that was a biggest issue for me. The only thing about this phone might be that the development seems a bit slow. I am used to switching between stock/cm/miui roms and first and last are not updated that often (we are still waiting for Sony's JB and MIUI is outdated at this stage), and generally the development thread seems not to be very active.
I switched from s3 to TX a few days ago. Sony's interface is fantastic and is 100x better than Samsung's touchwiz.
A minimal amount of bloatware and is very close to vanilla android IMO, anyone agree with me?
Development of cm in s3 with exynos are suffering many issues due to Samsung not providing sources to developers.
I don't like the jump from ics to jelly bean in s3, it seems like Samsung can't implement buttery smooth ui and just kept adding bloatware. Even galaxy nexus ui is faster than s3. Although multi window is nice.
Build quality is definitely better on Sony and TX feels like a premium while s3 got too much plastic.

Yeah, also the exynos exploit which a simple apk can root which was discovered by xda poster. Basically, there's no support for exynos devices but US s3 is fine since it uses Qualcomm chip.
Slow update by Sony is worth it I'm sure. Not some fast update by Samsung and HTC but crippled os and can't implement jelly bean properly IMO. Ics is fine also in Xperia and satisfied with it much faster than touchwiz lol
You should properly get a T if you want more development but for sure TX will get cm10 also.

1.: Does xperia family share developers? E.g. one ROM gets compiled to few devices by same cook? Are there plenty of neat roms to choose?
2.: Is it possible to hardbrick xperia device (by flashing wrong boot)?
3.: Are there any recurring problems with xperia family that only long time user knows?
4.: Is there someone else who switched from Galaxy S2/3/4 to Z1 - if so, why?
5.: By any chance - does Z1 support headphone remote control for iphones?

First of all, welcome to the xperia family.
1. For now, there's not much in the development. Because the Z1 its just been released this september. We still need time, let the developers do their magic. Its just about time. If u want to see for example, go to xperia arc development. You will see many ROMs available.
2. Yup. Its possible. Every device has the possibility to be hardbricked. But dont worry, as long as u follow the instruction, u wont encounter any hard brick. Ive used xperia arc, xperia s, and xperia z1, and never encounter hardbrick.
3. The only problem that i know from the xperia family is that we are late on android updates.
4. I dont know
5. I think its gonna work, never tried it tho ..

I can answer your question about coming from an S3 to the Z1! I've found the Z1 much much better than the S3! No Touchwiz lag and bloat! Sure I miss some of the gesture stuff but I'll trade the lag free and minimalist changes to the android interface by Sony anytime. Also my battery lasts much longer than it ever did with the S3 and overall I'm quite happy! You might however find the display pannel to be inferior to Samsung's AMOLED screens. To be honest, viewing angles are not as good but still ok IMO... There are people complaining about yellow tint issue with Z1 and I became obssessed with that however after a few days of use, your eyes do get used to it and even in the tests, the whites look white... its a display calibration issue which Sony can easily fix in a firmware update..Also the Xperia Z had a tool to adjust white balance which is missing from the Z1 and should be brought in or will be ported.. Overall, I'll give a 8/10.. There are a few bugs but with the last update, quite a few were fixed.. Sony will keep this up so I expect it to be perfect in 1-3 months!

I had totally lite rom in my S2 since day 1 so I don't mind touchwiz, you can get rid of it pretty easily...
I still struggle with the idea of:
-having larger phone than S4, and yet
-having smaller screen than S4 (because of those stupid software buttons)
Also I'm kinda afraid of the glass... I've had some rough landings with my S2 - 1.5m landing on display on pavement, then scratching another meter on it and - one minor dent on the plastic bezel. No cracked front glass, no cracked back glass (plastic cover sometimes wins )
: confused :

If you are struggling with these issues, I think Z1 is not a good option for you... I suggest you try the LG G2... bigger screen (5.2") than S4 with roughly the same size, not glass (also plastic as S4). UI is very close to S4... G2 has software buttons but that's because the bezels are so small, it can not fit a physical button... it has the same chip (S800) as Z1 and note 3... and is 100 dollars cheaper...

Upgrade from Xperia Z1

After almost two years of owning the Xperia Z1, I was thinking of an upgrade, so I was asking this question to you, ladies and gentlemen, do you think it's a worthy upgrade to go to Xperia Z3+?
I know about the heat issues with Snapdragon 810 chipset, and I wanted to stress the fact that I don't game on my mobile, and I will not use the 4K on the Z3+ much at all.
Or do you think I should rather wait for a new Xperia iteration?
I have the same thoughts because I had the Z1 for almost 2 years. I decided to stay on the Z1 and wait for Z5 or another phone... The fact is: for that money, the Snapdragon 810 is not worth it!
And there is Sir Venkat Kamesh with his GREAT Rockroms... I had about 11 phones now and his ROMs are the best and I think he is going to provide updates till Android M. And yes, Sony will release Android M for Z1.
And after all, its still a very nice and fast phone
Absolutely agree with you. Z1 still good phone, hardware is not out of date, design - classic never die , sony`s lifetime of product also beyond praise. I'll wait for a new model, Z5 or something like that.
Indeed, the Z1 has a classic lovely design, and I cared about this phone a lot, as good as new, no scratches or scuffs, never dropped. But I am getting a bit frustrated about Lollipop update, phone feeling a bit sluggish, lots of redraws, pretty bad battery life; and all these after a factory reset, too.
And I am in a bit of a tight spot too, since I switched from Windows-based laptop to a Macbook Pro, and I don't think I can flash any custom ROM's on a Mac?
Still, ArmadiloDS, could you post a link for those ROM's of Venkat Kamesh, just to have a look? Thanks a lot!

Yes you can use flash tool on a Mac. I have been using one since i got the phone, two years ago.
May I add, I am also not upgrading next month, as this phone still kicks ass. Apart from the battery life on 5.0.2. Which is completely ****, even after a factory reset and stock install.
Gets below 50% and almost instant drop to naught.

X Performance detailed specs

Heya,
was wondering about some detailed specs on this phone.
I saw on one site that the RAM is LPPD3 and not 4 like in my current S7.
Also, I can't find any info about this but I guess it will not come with wireless charging?
Knock in screen to unlock? It worked on my Z3C but not on my fathers Z3 for some weird reason. Maybe I didn't enable it for him, dunno.
Basically I sold my Z3C for a new S7. Sure the phone is a beast but I still prefer Sony over Samsung any day of the week. The tiny apps on top of others like the calculator and timer. The home menu and overall smoother feel. Less bloated, closer to vanilla. There are quite a few things I like better and would want to change to a Sony phone again.
Anyway, would appreciate any input regarding the longevity of the X Performance, and maybe a comparison to the S7.
There might be more things I miss from my Sony days but can't remember them now so start with this.

Yeah I saw that but it doesn't specify the type of RAM used just how much it is. Also the software stuff like knock-on-display unlock isn't in the list either afaics. It's ok, I can wait, I got a Z5C for now and will see if i ever change from here. Thanks for your help!
