[Q] How to flash latest firmware? - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello once again. As usual, I've first tried to search my question in the forums, but I couldn't find the answer. So, here I go:
I have a Lumia 925, for which the latest software, according to nokia.com, is 3050.XXXX, whereas the version I have in my phone is 3047.XXXX. When I check for updates in the phone settings, I get a "your phone is up to date". If I use the Nokia Software Updater tool, it says the same.
On the other hand, I bought my phone debranded and unlocked, not "linked" to any provider. So, I'll never get an update via network provider.
Now my question is: where can I find and download the latest firmware for the phone, and how can I flash it?
Phoenix Service Software asks me for a dongle, that I have not. Nokia SU for Retail doesn't give me the latest ROM. Which is the appropriate software for flashing a Nokia Lumia, then?
Thanks in advance.

no new update because not officially released to OTA update...
be patient or read forum... is too many posts on forum about this... you must use NCS or Nokia Care Suite (not latest version), and download and flash firmware via Product Support Tool for Store 5.0 in NCS
NCS download
After Nokia Suite installs, copy and replace the usergroupsconfiguration.cfg file to C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Nokia Care Suite\Product Support Tool For Store 5.0 if you’re running a 64-bit version of Windows. Or C:\Program Files\Nokia\Nokia Care Suite\Product Support Tool For Store 5.0 if on 32-bit.
1. Open Nokia Suite. And select ‘Product Support Tool For Store 5.0′
2. When prompted, select ‘CareSuite External’ then hit ‘Sign-in’ button.
3. From the Menu, select Tools, then ‘Firmware Download’
4. Now enter the product code of your device, hit ‘Check Online’ button, to check the latest firmware version of your product code.
5. Then ‘tick’ ‘Optional Content Files and ‘Download’ to save your firmware.
6. Wait a few minutes for your files to download
7. You may now manually flash your Nokia device with the firmware you just downloaded.
- Your firmware should be stored in the C:\ProgramData\Nokia\Packages\Products folder of your hard drive.

Thank you. I already downloaded and installed NCS, and followed those steps, but I didn't get the prompt for signing in. Perhaps because I downloaded the latest version (2012.50)? To which version should I downgrade? There are a bunch of them.
In any case, the sad part of it is... NCS says that my device (Lumia 925) is not supported. When I plug in my other Nokia (RM-675), it's supported, which means that my NCS installation is working. Then, why the Lumia 925 shows as not supported? Am I doing something wrong, or it's simply and really not supported by the software?

yyou must use old version, dont use latest or upgrade old....

Ok, I finally got it working. Just downloaded the very latest version of NCS and replaced the edited file. Phone supported.
As to the versions, I finally managed to decypher the soup of codes and versions. I'll post separately, just in case someone wonders.

[Q] Lumia 520 Not detected on NSS Pro

I already unlocked the phone with dreamspark, but when I open NSS Pro v0.48 it doesnt get anything. I have installed Nokia Care Suite and all the drivers but it always says phone not found. I am using a Nokia Cable in the Lumia.
I doubt NSS 0.48 can communicate with WP8 devices... I don't actually know if *any* version can, but surely you'd want to use the most up-to-date one?
for which reason you need NSS on WP8 phone???
for flashing phone you need NCS or NSU for retail, not NSS
Just trying to get another rom, but I think I don't. Never really liked WP or Nokia new phones. I already have NCS.
Thank you.

Use NCS. The tuto: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515453

last of the lumia

I have looked and looked to no avail, is it no longer possible to flash Lumia firmware through the Nokia Care Suite anymore? I can not seem to find the RM-820 in the open product. Everything tutorial I have seen says to find it in there I did see a comment in a thread where someone said that they didn't think Nokia is allowing that anymore. Is this true? I have the spinning cogs so I wanted to flash the firmware...
So I'm stuck and all help on the internet seems outdated. Is there something I'm missing?
just read forum... there is few ways to download firmware....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2515453
there is a new tool released by nokia that is supposed to help recover / flash phones if they become stuck during boot or flash.
From memory it is called nokia software recovery tool. maybe you could try that if you can find it. I read about it on a site lastnight but can not remember where i saw the info about.
Google may help or it may have even been on here..

I downloaded and installed Nokia Care Suite on a Windows 8.1 PC just last night (EST in New York). I then used to install the Amber update onto a RM-878 that I just bought from Amazon - worked flawlessly.

That is exactly what I am talking about. I have read the thread, followed the thread up until it say under product type. Under the sim tray it says RM-820 and there isn't a RM-820 in there, thus this question got asked. I'm not asking for someone to hold my hand through this, I just wanted to know if the RM-820 is or isn't supported with Nokia Care Suite. I know that the software works, flawlessly even, not saying it didn't. I have the firmware downloaded don't need the firmware. Just wanted to know if the Lumia was still supported by Nokia Care Suite, if I was missing something obvious.

What Phone do you have - reason I ask is that the original thread is a little confusing - there is of course a Lumia 820 but its actual Product Type is RM-824 and if you use the 824 Product Type from this thread:Nokia Lumia 820 Product Code (Product Type RM-824)
at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49364933&postcount=10 it shows dozens of codes to use for the Nokia Care Suite depending on country and carrier.

Install Windows 10 Mobile on unsupported Lumia

Hello everyone,
I am interested, is there any way to install Windows 10 Mobile on Lumia 925? Maybe some hack or editing the registry will help? Please help me ))))
Thanks!!!
Best Regards,
DADA
Install the Windows Insider app and select the release preview ring.
No need to mess with the registry.

EDIT: It now started downloading .164
One more question: What about Redstone builds? How can I install them?
Thanks again!
For Redstone builds you need to fake an entry in the registry.
To be exactly in HKLM-->SYSTEM-->Platform-->DeviceTargetingInfo change the entry in PhoneManufacturer from NOKIA to MicrosoftMDG
But beware, major bugs can occur since your device is not supported officially.

I have a HTC One M8 Windows running 10586.164; that said if you're attempting to run the very latest builds which as of this typing is 14295. Microsoft releases a list of supported devices and the Lumia 925 and the M8W are not on the list and trust me, I'm not happy about their decision and I blame HTC too; a two year promise that has been deliberately broken and for HTC users this is twice and I don't care what some post about their decision being faired; I'm sick of the general device manufacturers thumbing their noses up at us and if the Tech Previews work on our device then why can't the gold release be made to work on ours too.

You are absolutely right!
I have installed Redstone build with registry hack. It works very good on my Lumia 925 it's faster than build 10586.164. If you are interested in that check out this link: https://www.reddit.com/r/windowsphone/comments/4bmmiy/tutorial_for_installing_redstone_builds_on/
Dont work on 520
Hi!
I can't install redstone on my Lumia 520,because i can't install vcREG and CustomPFD.
I've set my phone to developer mode in the developer options settintgs page, and after that i tried to deploy vcREG and CustomPFD to my phone with application deployment tool from windows phone sdk 8.1.When i try to deploy vcREG,the app deploy says the app manifest could not be loaded or not valid, and when i tryed to deploy CustomPFD it throws this error code: 0x81030120.what can i do?i have 10586.164 build of w10m,and i've tried any other methods (for example root tool's interop unlock),but nothing worked for me :/

Hi,
First of all before you will attempt to install Redstone on your device I want to say to you that Redstone on my Lumia 925 was not stable enough. Yes, it was faster than 10586.164 build but it had some bugs listed below:
1) When SIM card is inserted you can't get any notifications and when you try to download app from the store, store freezes. If you will remove SIM card from your phone you will get notifications and store will work properly.
2) If you will reset your phone you will stuck on Welcome Back screen. (If you want to avoid that you need to remove SIM card from your phone)
2) Phone has also charging bugs.
3) Phone restarts very often.
4) Sometimes phone can't find any Wi-Fi. (Restart helps)
So this are the bugs that I noticed when using latest Redstone build on my Lumia 925. If you want to install it anyways I have some suggestions.
1) Restore your phone to Windows Phone 8.1 and ensure that extras+info will not get any update.
2) Install only Windows Insider app and choose Release Preview.
3) When you will install build 10586.164 make reset and again don't update extras+info. (Turn off auto update in store)
4) Choose Developer mode and deploy vcREG. Before you deploy CustomPFD go to templates in vcREG app and click on first and fourth checkboxes and hit apply(or something like that) then deploy CustomPFD.
If you will update extras+info you will not be able to deploy this apps. If you will deploy CustomPFD without using vcREG you will get error: 0x81030120
If you have further questions I am here. ))))
Does anyone know if in the future 520 will be able to update to 14295 without registry hacks? 10586 is unusable for me since it has the bug that prevents installation of extra language packs/keyboards
I was JUST about to flash it and read this. Thanks for the info. Wondering if future builds will be more stable.
Also, say if I flash this, can I revert back to either 8.1 or 10 Preview?

Yes you can revert to WP8.1 and then install W10M preview.
Also not every user had this bugs... Maybe if you will update to W10M you will not get this bugs... But it's risky...

Yes it's W10M build 10586.107. When it will be installed check for updates again and it should download build 10586.164. This build is very stable and useful for everyday usage. ...And also I don't understand why they removed Redstone builds from older Lumias with 1GB of RAM, it was very fast on my 925(Except of Bugs)... Lets see what we will get in future...

Unfortunately, that's not true. With 10586 you can't download language packs/keyboards (at least not the ones that include the swype functionality). Anyways, you didn't answer my question - can I expect to be able to install 14295 without registry hacks on 520/521?

Removing Carrier Lock?

The Alcatel 5033T (Telstra) I have is Telstra-locked to the point that most online unlock-code providers can't get a code to free it up. The only places which say they can do it require you to bring it in (they're in other states) or they want you to install Teamviewer (!) and they'll do it remotely.
I'm sure this is a FAQ on other phone models, but I see nothing for the Alcatel 1 here yet. What are the chances someone with past experience on ADB can figure out how to get this working with a non-Telstra SIM?
Did you manage to sort this
How to mount sd card
saw someone posted this, any Guru can verify the steps? or make it clearer?
**********************************************************************************
On the 5033T fastboot will flash only the system.img not the boot or recovery
image,so Magisk or TWRP cannot be flashed via fastboot. Also to flash via SPflashtool for the MT6739 you now need a custom DA and Auth file for that phone.
The downloaded edited 5033D system image will give you root access but install
RootCheckerBasic app to check as sometimes the root access disappears.
The phone modem is in the vendor.img partition and so should be unaltered as you
have flashed the system.img partition only.Your bands should be unaltered. Install the MTK Engineering Mode apk and use the bandmode function to see the bands. (Phone Developer option must be on(Tap build number untill developer options appear)).
Now that you have root access you can now network unlock the phone. Using ES File Explorer or Root Explorer. In the phone /vendor/protect_f/md you will see a file ST33_004. This file determines whether the phone is network locked.
If you get this file from an unlocked phone and put it in place of the one
in the locked phone the phone will be then unlocked and vice versa.
Download the 5033A firmware from the Needrom site. From the download get the protect1.img (in another files). Download to your PC the Ext4Unpacker tool.
Use the tool to extract the ST33_004 file from the 5033A protect1.img .
This is the unlocked ST33_004.
Using ES or Root Exp rename the existing ST33_004 in the phone as ST33_004bac
and copy the new ST33_004 file into the directory. The phone will now accept
non Telstra/Boost SIMs .
Also download the Mobile Upgrade S Gotu2 v5.3.5 tool to your PC. This is the TCL(i.e.=Alcatel) official firmware upgrade tool. It replaces the firmware in
your phone with the latest version on their server for your phone. For a stock
phone it will upgrade to their latest stock version.
For the 5033T+5033D 'hybrid' ,when started the tool appears to be downloading
the 5033T firmware from the server, so it seems that the tool could be used
to return the phone to stock, but this not tried or tested yet.

Where'd you find this? I'm willing to try 'cos it'll let me get my son off Telstra's overpriced plan and onto something affordable like Jeenee (which the rest of us are on). I've had this Telstra SIM for years so I was hoping they'd unlock the phone for me - after all, it was sent as a replacement for an older phone that'll be out of service when they retire some of the towers in our area - but when I call in to have them do that, they say they'll have to call me back and (of course) never do...

The 5033A you need to get it from needrom
Any luck someone? I am unable to root it using kingroot

Unlock ANY Pixel from Carrier

____________________________________________________
UPDATE AS OF 16 OF MAY 2023:
The security patch of December of 2022 fixed the patch, so it doesn't work on this version and newer ones.
The project is still alive and I am working to get the exploit to work on newer version, but for now haven't found any.
However due to the complex nature of the project and that I have little free time, expect this to take sometime until a new exploit is available.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know! Any help is welcome

Hey everybody!
So recently I bought a Google Pixel 4 XL. The thing is that in Europe they are too expensive compared to the US, so I bought one that was from AT&T(used of course). However is that I need to use my SIM on the phone, but of course, the phone refused to allow me to use my SIM from Spain. ⛔️
So after hours of research, I found a way to unlock it. Here are the steps:
1. Remove your SIM card if it is on the phone
2. Do a factory reset
3. Do OFFLINE SETUP. Also, DON'T PUT ANY PASSWORD OR ANY TYPE OF SCREEN LOCK
4. Once you are on the main screen, enable USB Debugging.
5. Connect the phone to the computer (I assume you already have the USB drivers, platform-tools downloaded and knowledge on how to use ADB commands. If you don't have the SDK downloaded, head to this link and follow the instructions)
6. Inside the platform-tools folder, open a terminal window and run "adb shell"(on mac, once you are on the directory you have to run "./adb shell") and then "pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.google.android.apps.work.oobconfig" (run them without quotes)
After this, you can already connect the phone to the internet and put your SIM in.
This didn't unlock the phone though . What we have just done is this:
When we connect the phone to the internet, it verifies if it should lock the SIM or not. So we did a setup without internet, so the phone can't do that. After that, we uninstall the package responsible for doing this.
So when we connect it to the internet, it won't check the SIM lock
However, the bootloader is still locked and grey out. This is because this app is responsible to grey or not the bootloader switch. If it is from a carrier, the package will disable the switch, and if not you will have the ability to unlock it. As we kill the app before it could do its job, the bootloader will be waiting until the package gives its answer.
Special thanks to this Jorge Cortés to make this post possible.
If you find the post useful, consider buying me a cup of coffee please with Revolut.
If anyone has problems/doubts please let me know!
Esim is unlocked as well?
Didn't try but should work, as the phone never check if it is from a carrier or not.

Hey,
I am working on that. As it turns out there is a way to flash firmware to any device with a Qualcomm chip, even if the bootloader os locked. It's called EDL mode. This mode was designed to force flash firmware in bricked devices that can't use fastboot or adb.
I already find the app I need to flash, actually there a a lot of different ones( I chose QPST) but it needs some strange files that I didn't find yet, and it won't allow em to use the google firmware neither .
So when I find those files I will write a detailed guide on how to unlock the bootloader , but for now I only know how to use any SIM on a locked Pixel device.

yeah unlike Oneplus Google didn't release any software designed specifically to the Pixel lineup, so you have to use the generic Qualcomm tools.

Can you name other generic Qualcomm tools so I can experiment with them??
Yeah of course, there is QFIL also and some others that aren't official. I downloaded them from Androidmtk website.
With this link you go to the qpst download and use instructions section of their webpage. At the bottom you will find similar programs, but I didn't get to try them. You can try them, but make sure they are for Qualcomm Chipset, because some of them are for mediatek phones.

If you find any files please also send them to me. Can we use a working Device to get these files from. Like we extract these files for a normal pixel 4 xl and then flash it to ours?

Of course, if I find them I will make them available for anyone .
Yes in theory you can extract this files from your phon, however as mine is locked I need them from an unlocked pixel I suppose, but I didn't try to extract the files from my home and the flash them again, it could work. In the QPST you even have a section to that, it's a backup I Believe but not sure about the name.
If you try and it works let me know!

Yes I am also looking for an unlock Pixel 4 XL if I find one I will try extracting these files and post it somewhere on the internet so anyone can access it
Yeah that is a way, but I was thinking that maybe these files are inside of the IMG files of the firmware from Google, and that firmware isn't lock , so if anyone manage to find those files there you wouldn't need to buy another pixel to extract the firmware.
I also think that in reality you don't need the firmware but rather some files for your Qualcomm Chipset to get the Sahara protocol working and I believe later on you flash the firmware, however I am not sure about that as I didn't try it.
I think this because you can find some Qualcomm snapdragon 855 programmer files (which had the extension we need), so they may be basic files that activates the Sahara protocol (which is the one used when the phone is in this mode) and only after I believe you can flash the firmware using some commands.
I would like to try out this but I can't as it could brick my phone and I don't have other to use, and I don't have any other pixel, this is my first and only Pixel ever.
So if you have an older pixel and you want you could try this theory...

Mbn Files from Pixel 4 Request
As title states, I am looking for the mbn files from the pixel 4. I downloaded the modem partition and could not seem to extract it and thought someone that owns a pixel 4 might have better luck than me. Thanks! The directory might be...
