Omni on the NEXUS 7 3G - General Omni Discussion

Hello All,
I decided to update my Nexus 7 3G and after some considerations between CM11 and Omni 2 days ago I installed Omni with no issues. After 2 days of intensive use everything works fine with some minnor issues which I don't know if they are Omni specific.
1. Battery-When Nexus is on it seems that doesn't charge with Omni kernel. With r77 of Franco Kernel it charges normally.
2. Keyboard-Stock Google keyboard when active and with Nexus connected to WiFi uses data evef if not used. 11.5M in few minuted. I installed Swiftkey, deactivated Google Keyboard and now no data use.
3. OpenDelta-My first update was fine with no problems. Just a note: OpenDelta downloaded some files after it booted to recovery (TRWP 2.6.3.1) to finisg the installation. After that in the OpenDelta directory there a file of 265.7M. How is it possible?
I don't know if the above issues are ROM specific or else. Anyone had the some issues?
Thanks

Google keyboard fetching data is a known issue, but it's a Gapps problem.
Omni uses the AOSP keyboard, which works just fine.

Thank you
I installed the last nighty (20140104) and now battery charge works fine

2012 or 2013 Nexus 7?
My 2013 charges just fine.
Unless you're talking about charging from a PC's USB port - Many of Franco's kernels do dangerous things that can damage your hardware like allowing more than 500 mA to be pulled from a standard downstream port (SDP) - Omni will never include such dangerous features in order to protect your hardware.

Before installing Swiftkey keyboard there were only Google keyboards. Where the AOSP Keyboars is?
My nexus 7 is 2012 tilapia. Usually PC's USB ports are designed to not deliver more than 500 mA and are fuse protected. Anyway not permitting more than 500 mA on a USD port is a good idea, but from the mains more than 500 mA should be possible as the charger is rated 2 Amps.
Any nighty is better than the other and update is fine, compliments for your work.

Guess it has been removed by your Gapps package... Also happens with Launcher3, that may get replaced by Google's GEL.

Unfortunately my grouper is now in the hands of my family, but no one else has reported any issues with charging from the wall charger.
Unless you're using a 2A iDevice charger - these get detected as USB by most Android devices as Apple doesn't follow the standards.

Probably I have not been clear in my post. After 20140104 nighty update charge works from both USB and wall charger even when the Nexus is on and this was the issue i had before the update, no charge at all when the device was on. Now less that 500 mA from both USB and wall, I simply was aspecting more charge current from the wall. I am using the charger that cames with the Nexus 7. Anyway this is not any more an issue. I will update my Galaxy Nexus with Omni too.
Thank you and continue your excellent work
All Guys on the forum enjoy 2014!

A/C charging patch now available to kernel devs

A new patch has been developed for kernal development which allows a/c charging through USB and car chargers...
As I hate charging through USB I would like to see how this patch improves the method. Maybe faux or somebody will jump on it .. I hope
Have at it: http://t.co/DalMzRTP

That patch is just for Galaxy Nexus devices.
I realize this may be only for one device, but I was wondering what exactly does force a/c charging mean?
Can someone lay out more of the technical side of this?
I assume devices will charge faster, are there any negatives?
The car dock doesn't even put a positive charge on the Atrix if the phone is on and using GPS, and the car charger barely dents it. The cheap $5 dollar store chargers take all day too

In-car USB Charger?

Hi all. I can't find a charger that gives out enough power to charge my SXT. I even tracked down a Schosche reVolt (not easy in the UK) which is supposed to be the most powerful on the market.
I've noticed that the Sony website doesn't seem to be advertising one yet!

Well, I tried about 5 different high-power chargers and no luck! Thanks for the suggestions, though.
However, I've just updated the firmware to the latest official Sony one and now the chargers work! So, it was a software problem after all that!
May I ask what output current was used on your car chargers?

They probably updated it to detect Apple iDevice chargers as AC chargers.
Apple-compatible 2.1A chargers get detected as USB by most Android devices because Apple sucks at following standards.
This is what you want.
It works like a charm. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00470C35E/ref=oh_details_o05_s01_i00 and dual usb out is a bonus.
Works for anything I've plugged into it via USB.

Very few Android devices will work with that.
If it says it's for iPad, it will fail with the majority of Android devices.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0088U4YAG/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i02 - the NA port of this works well with every Android device I've tried (except Samsung tablets, which are "special" in terms of charger detection.)
There's a cheaper and smaller "2.1A" version.
Also note that many chargers which claim 2.1A capability can't actually deliver it. (I'm not sure if that 3.1A charger can even do 2.1 - but it's good enough for the T) Scosche reVIVE II is probably good for an amp at best (I need to collect more data, but it behaves more consistently with a 1A charger than a 2A charger - and yes, this is from the 2A port.)
FYI, this is the results of applying the tests described at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065404 to the T:
Sorry for the poor formatting, I have yet to figure out how to post a table on XDA.
HTML:
<table border="1">
<tr><td>Amperage Limit</td><td>Voltage</td></tr>
<tr><td>1.33</td><td>5.15</td></tr>
<tr><td>1.30</td><td>5.0</td></tr>
<tr><td>1.20</td><td>4.9</td></tr>
<tr><td>1.10</td><td>4.8</td></tr>
<tr><td>1.00</td><td>4.7</td></tr>
<tr><td>0.90</td><td>4.7</td></tr>
<tr><td>0.80</td><td>4.6</td></tr>
<tr><td>0.70</td><td>4.5</td></tr>
</table>
So ideally, you need a charger that can remain above 5.0 volts even when delivering 1.3A. If it drops to 4.9v, you drop to 1.2A, and so on.

Nexus 7 OTG + charging is here

It says it's only been tested with CM10, but might also work with other ROMs. I finally got my Y cable, and I can confirm it works. [Using this cable from ebay, $6]
http://mehrvarz.github.com/otg-power-nexus7.html
This means you can plug in your flash drive or hard drive and use it while on AC power!
Update: for 4.2.x check this dedicated thread over on rootzwiki: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/37755-timurs-kernel-robust-usb-host-power-management/
Big thanks to XDA member t1mur and rootzwiki Timur for making the kernel!
This is awesome, just need to find a y-cable to try this out. Just hope its a stable kernel that doesn't cause any issues.
This is a great step in the right direction! Can't wait to see where this goes..
Hi Guys,
will this also work with a standard otg-cable and an usb-hub?

I don't think so for 2 reasons. Usually even powered usb hubs don't give out power through the input port [The source port of the hub]. And even if it did, it would be 500 mAh [the N7 charger is 2000 mAh], which [edit:] isn't enough enough to charge the N7 with the screen on. If the screen is off though, it will slowly charge it.
Also, apparently this is already implemented in Faux's beta kernel, you have to use echo to enable it [it's explained on the thread].
i am getting the 16GB. i am tired of waiting. I have one last question though. Can this in any way cause any type of damage on my device?
It's allow usb and AC charging or only usb ?
Awesome news, even though I just bought a regular OTG cable about a week ago for a $1.50 (still waiting for it to be delivered from China to the USA [NJ]). Since I just got a full-time job I'm going to sell my 8 GB and get one of the 32 GB versions when they become available so I won't have to worry about the extra cable
Can anybody confirm that it effectively works ?
Also, It would be good to to know:
- which Y-USB-OTG cable is used ?
- which power source, i.e. from a PC (500 mA) or a charger (2 A) ?
Huh? I have this already in my kernel for a while now... This is NOT something new

Can you tell us some details ?
I am a little confused. The link says...
When a host mode adapter was recognized, charging of USB slave devices will NOT be activated and instead vbus will be raised in order to accept external charge.
If I want to use something that requires external power like a usb thumb drive, and the charging of usb slave devices is not activated; where does the slave device get the power to function? Is that shared off of the Y cable?
I know exactly what your talking about I have one for my old touchpad, ill try it on my nexus 7 see if it works.

Excited!
Can't wait for this! I'll be staying on top of this topic for awhile.
Alright I tried it using stock rooted using motleys kernel and while I could use a powered usb hub with 2 storage devices and a keyboard It wouldn't charge the N7 simultaneously. Although it didn't drain any power from the device either. Now this could be because of what I'm running or even one of the cords since I won't have a chance till the morning to test a couple more scenarios. All in all it definitely should be possible but may require a different kernel/rom etc. Though the OP asked the question regarding doing it w/o cm10 so ill try and stay within those parameters. On the touchpad I used to do it with cm9, as it was necessary especially with that device mostly only working with its 2amp charger. The reason I would only question cords used is I had previous trouble with an older kindle cable and when I tested it on a device I needed 1.5a it was hovering around 1.35a using my multimeter. Which was causing my Touchpad not to charge because it requires alot of power to charge. Ill update you on any progress and see I'f I can find the link foe the Ycable which I got on amazon awhile back.

I'm gonna have to do this. With this I will be able to finish my otg case
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I just read the code for the patch, its definitely looking like it will rely on the kernel as atleast in cm, USB slave charging mode needs to be suspended when recognized as host adapter. Regardless, I believe another Dev already implemented this and I'm sure others will.

Yeah. Now I'm toying with the idea of mounting a network share from a NAS-enabled router and put that in that in the car instead...effectively freeing up the USB port for full normal charging. I don't really like this route though because I suspect waiting for the router to boot every time the car is started will slow things down.

That's because the iPad charger doesn't have the data pins shorted out to enable fastcharge . Easiest way to accomplish fastcharge with your charger, is to buy a charging cable (data pins shorted out, so it is not a data cable:
http://dx.com/p/usb-male-to-lengthe...for-samsung-i9500-9300-htc-white-100cm-207353
It even has the lengthened micro usb connector the Nexus 7 needs.
Or maybe better, buy this one, found in another thread here on XDA, this one is confirmed to work in fastcharge mode with any usb charger:

Yes I know, and that's the reason the iPad charger won't work on fastcharge.
You need to either shortout the data pins of the iPad charger, or use a charger cable with shorted data pins ( a so called charge-only micro usb cable) to make the iPad charger use full capacity (fastcharge mode). There are also cable adaptors for sale that will shortout the data pins for you.

Yep, that one works because it follows the USB standard rules, and not the Apple USB standard.
No iDevice (iPhone/iPad) charger will fastcharge an android phone or tablet without modifying the datapins or use a charge-only cable / adaptor.
The Blackberry Playbook charger is known to work
Get an HP touchpad charger if you can. I can provide empirical evidence that it will actually charge your n7 20 minutes faster than the stock charger. I posted a thread about it here some time ago. "Best aftermarket charger ..." Or something like that.

I will suggest the HP touchpad charger for use with the N7... they work great and produce no noticeable heat when not connected... shows good efficiency.:good:
Check Ebay -= just did a quick search and got 131 hits anywhere from 8-20 USD. I"ve bought 2... one is firmly set to be my preferred travel charger for any USB device.

If the charger puts out less than the tablet needs then it will just charge slower (or not at all if it's really low) and if it puts out more than the maximum the tablet uses the extra will just go unused. Voltage is a different issue.

Having your device plugged into a USB 2 500mA computer port obviously charges slower then a 2000mA wall charger. It would be pretty faulty design if plugging your device into your computer would cause hardware damage.
Man, this really sucks, the Monoprice cable mentioned earlier in this thread is having the same issue I had with another micro USB cable, it doesn't seem to fit into the Nexus 7 snugly, it doesn't seem to go in all the way. (I hope I don't have a busted charging port), It doesn't seem to charge it at all, even with the stock Nexus AC adapter. I'm about to break down and buy the official Google charger again, even if all I need is a new micro USB cable.
I'm using 2 different monoprice cables, one in my car and one at home, and both fit well. Sounds like the port has gotten damaged.

So, I just decided to buy a whole new charger off Amazon. If that won't work and I determine that the micro USB port is busted, I'm not going to be very happy, haha. does anyone know if Google repairs them for a fee?
I use a Playstation Vita charger which seems to charge my N7 very fast. On the other hand, I've tried an old mobile charger also and the battery level goes down whilst plugged into it.
If under warranty and purchased from the PlayStore, yes, otherwise, if under warranty, ASUS.

[Q] Scosche - Revolt 2-port USB car charger - 2 12W ports

Hi everyone,
I just bought this car charger, hoping that I could get a faster charging inside my car, as it says at Amazon (and also in the pack of the product) that it works with android phones (Motorola’s ones as well).
Unfortunately, it seems it does not work with our Nexus 6.
Has anyone own the same charger and have similar troubles?
Regards.
For our phones you need a Qualcomm certified charger that charges at 2amps 18w or higher.

I have the charger and it works fine to charge the phone. The post that states you need a Qualcomm Quick Charge certified charger is also completely false. You only need that if you want to take advantage of the fastest charging rates possible, but other chargers certainly work just fine, and I RARELY use the charger that came with my phone to charge it.

How about a bit of clarifications... does not charge AT ALL? Or charges, but slow?
If it does not charge at all, then you need to make sure that it is actually making contact with the cig lighter plug. Does the charger have a light? If so, does the light turn on? Have you tried a different USB wire? If you've tried a different wire, and can confirm that it is getting power from your cig lighter plug, and it still doesn't charge AT ALL, then your unit is defective. End of story.
If it charges, but slow, then its working as expected.
It doesn't charge at all.
Tested again with an iPad and with a blackberry and it works normally with both. It just does not works with my Nexus 6...
BTW, my Nexus 6 works with other car charges that I have (an old Samsung one and a belkin too).
Regards.
