[Q] Does the Z1 have stereo speakers? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Simple enough question. Several sites say it does (see for example this) while several other sites say it doesn't (e.g. this). Why the conflicting information?

Under the grid at the bottom there is 1 speaker. You hear sound from right side because it's made like that.

I would assume that's to do with the positioning of the microphone. It's like the iPhone 4 and 4s, two 'speakers' at the bottom but one was really a mic.

So you are saying the Z1 have two Speakers?

No not at all, I noticed a while ago that if you cover the left hand side of the speaker it affects the sound, covering the right side doesn't. So it could well be there is a microphone under the mesh, one sides a speaker, one sides a mic.
Or it could be my speaker is buggered like the OP.

so it seems big grid is for design and also protection of both speaker and mic.

[Q] Microphone location?

Hey guys,
Just bought the Moto G 2014, and I'm loving it.
I was curious to know about the location of microphone of the phone. I see a hole at the top of the phone, that's the secondary mic, I don't see the primary one. Just out of curiosity, I think this phone possesses two microphones.

It's under the bottom speaker grill perfect for where the mouth goes while on the phone.

Just looked at the iFixit teardown and the microphone is a small silver rectangle, there are two, one at the top and one at the bottom, the microphone is just to the left of the USB port on this picture https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/tEKiSY13HxpZMrF4 and just to the right of the headphone jack in this picture https://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/JYApv2XLW6UkJ3nK you can also see a small hole to let the sound in for the bottom microphone in the 2nd picture.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, you can see both the microphones in the photos in my post above, although I've just noticed I've put right when I meant left so I'll correct that now.

Speaker Issue

Is anyone else having an issue with no sound coming from the bottom left speaker? I tried a sound test on Youtube and the top and bottom right speakers work. When something that should be playing out of the left, it just plays through the other two speakers. I also went into accessibility settings and set audio to play only from the left and it still only plays out the right and top speakers.
Try an audio track where you know where a particular sound should be.. left or right speaker...
Not a you tube track tho..

There is only one speaker on the bottom.
The other hole is a mic.

I was hoping for a reply like this and not that the device was faulty. Thank you for the quick answer. I'm coming from the Note 8 so I'm use to the design of the speaker/mic being different. Thanks again :good:

Sad to hear this, as initially it was reported that both of those would be speakers. Kind of disappointed, now.

I saw plenty of speculation that it might be, but nothing with any proof.

yeah, no proof. I believe it was just initials speculation, since you don't need that many holes just for a microphone.

On the other hand those make it look very symmetric on the bottom.

I agree with this. At least the other holes are being used for something. Not like another certain OEM ,cough cough, OP...
Sounds pretty darn good to me.

Bottom speaker sounds very low compared to top one

I disabled the audiowizard thing and also applied the mono audio in accessibility settings. But still the top speaker sounds way more than the bottom one but according to some previous post in this forum way back in time, it should be other way around i.e. bottom should be louded than the top one. Is there any fix for this?
it depends on the format of music youre playing...usually left and right are never equal...sometimes even far from each other...

I played a lot of different kind of music. And in all of them, the bottom one sounded tiny compared to the top one. I sense my hardware got damaged

Tried it.. still no use. Sounds same. Bottom is tiny than top
if you're reffering to the speaker near the 3.5 mm audio jack as the bottom one, and that it's quiet... that's high probability for a hardware defect. i would try doing factory reset. if that doesn't work, you should return the phone.

Left bottom speaker dead?

I just noticed that from the bottom speakers, only the right one fires while the left one seems dead or at least very quiet. Just up to a point, where I am suspicious if the left cut holes are only for the sake of a uniform design with no real speaker behind them.
What is your device like?
Left one is not speaker.

It's actually the microphone.
Google's official diagram of the device shows that it is the bottom microphone.

Question Query regarding speakers

Hi,
There are two speaker grills in the bottom of the device. Do they both works or only the right one works and the left one dummy ?
For my device right one is working, is it natural or my device is faulty ?

@Lakino, this is why!
Me and Lakino was discussing this as we were figuring out that no sound was coming out of one...
Also we discussed how great the Pixel 2 XL's speakers were and how much I miss them...

That makes sense. Guess we do need a mic somewhere down there.
Ok, next question. @Lughnasadh
There is a tiny pin prick hole on the top left hand side edge -- as you look at the phone. What is that hole for then? I thought that might have been the input mic.

If I'm thinking of the hole you are describing, that's a microphone. There are 3 microphones. A top one, a bottom one and a rear-facing one.

The heck? 3 mics? What the heck does the phone need 3 mics for? That's crazy.

The one you are describing might have to do with noise cancellation, but I'm not sure. Just a guess. The rear-facing one may have to do with video audio.
