[Q] HTC is bricked after battery discharge - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys!
I've read lots of topic at this forum about this problem. This is my story:
I forgot to charge the battery, leaving 8%. The next day the phone was switched off. When I tried to switch it on appeared the battery symbol and the blinking red light. Then the phone fell and did not react to anything longer.
I tried different chargers to recharge it. Also via USB.
I also tried a combination of keys: power+volume button+light to sensors. Every combination.
What is important: the phone is NOT rooted. There is oryginal software.
Today I gave the phone to the service. And my question is: is there a chance to fix it without losing data? I pointed out that if they wanted to delete my data - that called me. But I want to know if it is at all physically possible to repair it without losing data? If yes - I will tell them that I don't want to repair it in their service and try to do it alone.
Thank you very much for advice!

I don't think they will repair it without wiping data
BTW your problem is quite strange, it wouldn't have to brick like this
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

Why do you think so?
If breaks down something with charging/power they usually change the entire motherboard, or perhaps only certain components?

if there are very important data you might want to discuss the situation with them carefully. If there are data that are more worth than your cellphone, then you might have to pay them a bit more that they make some kind of special repair.

Help: My HD has suddenly gone dead

My hd has suddenly gone dead. The battery light does not turn on even if plugged in. I have tried to reset while plugged in but nothing happens. Connecting to the pc also doesn't help. Also tried to put it into bootloader without success. This does not feel good. Any ideas what might be the problem?
might be the usb connection. could be loose or bad
Have you tried to remove the battery, and put it back in..had a littel problem like (during unlock) that would turn on, removed the battery for 10s and put it back in and it turn on.

HI Bro Iknow ur pain, this happen to my diamond also, one day just didnt turn on after unplug from my vista machine. Only thing I could think of is that maybe there was a short circuit somewhere between pluging to the computer with usb.
You will have to send it for repairs unfortunately

The problem is that I have installed a custom rom...and no way of reverting to original...does this void my guarantee?
Came back ...for now

I tried this and it magically came back. The strange thing is that I had been taking the battery out and putting it back in many times ...but perhaps I had not left the battery out long enough.
The battery also seems full which is kind of strange since I had been using the phone all day without charging.
In any case, I will leave it charging over night and report back tomorrow.
Thanks for your help!

Hi,
Sorry for "using" the thread, and I am glad that it was resurrected, but... VIPPER2004, in end were you successful for the unlock? I have exactly the same problem, and so far have not succeeded... Any suggestions?
Thanks,
P.
Glad its working...

You'd better reflash a stock ROM and keep it for a while until you are reasonably sure that it was just a case and won't happen again.

I am also trying to use the same soft, but no luck... could you please, eventually by PM, tell me the steps that worked for you?
And it can be in Portuguese... ; )

Dead again
Well...it did happen again. This morning I found it dead again while plugged in. Unfortunately, I did not reflash it to stock rom. I can now only hope that I get a second chance to reflash before sending it off. Any other ideas are welcome.......
entering the new year without my blackstone
Looks like my hd has to take a trip to the factory.
Quick question: since I didn't manage to revert to initial rom does anyone know what the policy is on repairing an htc with custom rom?
That is indeed unfortunate...
What custom ROM have you installed? Have you checked in the thread if someone else had similar issues? And have you installed any particular program?
Also, you had no such issues while you were on the original ROM?
If you have this type of issues, trying to flash a stock ROM without being sure about the cause for the issues might be a little dangerous... There would be, I suppose, the risk that something might go wrong during the flashing process. And you would risk having a lovely brick...
Regards,
P.
I have installed Panosha's light version. No one else seems to be having this problem. Is there a chance that the battery is faulty? Can I have it repaired even though it has a custom rom installed?
Hi,
It might be a problem with the battery, but you could only try this possibility if you used other HD... by the way you have been using the wall charger or the usb cable attached to the PC?
Regarding the possiblity of having it repaired, under warranty, it could depend on the repairer itself. At the limit they could refuse to repair it under warranty, because a non-official ROM has been installed, and, specially, because a non-original HSPL is in place... but they could also overlook this, or do not notice it.
I would make sure it can not be "ressurected" and properly flashed before going to HTC service.
Regards,
P.

I have tried several times to resurrect it without success. On one ocassion I had the power light turn on for about 2 seconds then dead again. The only thing I have not tried is to try another battery. I will probably find one by tomorrow to test. Otherwise on Friday it will head to the repair shop...and fingers crossed. I will let you know what the repair policy seems to be here in Greece.

Your phone is not broken!
Duttys ROM does not have this problem. I have had the same with Panosha's ROM and with Touch of HD ROM. The screen goes black and only removing the battery brings it back.

I wish this were the case, but even after removing the battery I cannot get it to function. Even when plugged into an outlet the power light does not turn on, so it's clearly more than a blank screen.

Samsung Galaxy S3 suddenly dies and won't turn on even after battery removal

The phone was plugged in to my computer (I was doing development) and was running all the time. Suddenly, while I was not doing development or doing anything, the phone died and I have have never been able to turn it on again.
I've tried:
Hold the Power button
Hold both Power and Volume down button
Take out the battery and put it in again
Replace the batter with another one from my friends' working-perfectly-fine Galaxy S3
The result is the same: no response from the phone at all - it's completely cold, no sound, light or vibration at all - all I've seen is the blank unchanged screen so please don't ask me about the start up screen
What can I do?
*Notes: I've read this thread but my warranty has ran out so bringing it to Samsung is not really the best option.

If you are going to replacet the motherboard and use the same phone, your data should still be there.
If you are going to use a new phone, you have to take out the hard drive and connect to it to get the data from there.
There is no hard drive in the Galaxy S3, just an eMMC flash chip soldered to the motherboard.

Are you sure all people on this forum are developers? Also, just what kind of developers?
Again, my answer could be wrong but how can it cause problem for others?
Let's break it down:
I said data should not be lost after motherboard replacement
There is no action required here so how can it lead to anything harmful?
Last time I checked, the data in my S3 was still there after its motherboard was replace
Taking out the hard drive from the phone was the part I wasn't sure
As of now, I can see that it's apparently wrong as someone pointed out
However, if there is no hard drive ==> how can one take it out ==> how can one damage anything?
How can I be responsible for anything here?
What do say now Mr. smart developer?
Please provide something concrete and convincing.
Don't waste your time, don't waste mine
After checking my hard brick phone by a bestbuy technical, i was told my phone was totally dead. The phone wouldnt connect to PC, can't do power charge, no any response even the jig method. And the data is gone. However, I am not sure how the data backup works. maybe they just don't wanna do it or their lack of doing it.
Normally, the data recovery from damaged hardware is expensive. cause it need plenty of time and they probably think the customer wouldn't pay for that.
Directly replace a motherboard could cost less than repair it. In some cases, could even replace a new phone cost less than a new motherboard. Technically, backup data from hard brick phone could be possible.

Similar problem with my Samsung Galaxy S3. Mine turned off randomly and wouldn't turn on again for half a day each time. The last time it happened it wouldn't turn on for a day, so I tried the DOWNLOAD MODE combination, cancelled it, got prompted to RESTART PHONE then it turned on again.
I took in my phone directly to Samsung Customer Service in Albany, Auckland (for New Zealand people). They found that the "current was not stable" and all they had to do was replace the mainboard. It only took them half a day to repair and it was covered by warranty. He said the cost of the mainboard, outside of warranty, would cost around NZD $260.
Replacing mainboard shouldn't affect your memory but it is always best to back up your phone via Samsung Kies (or something similar) before taking it in for repair. According to the Samsung guy, in New Zealand, they are not legally allowed to back up a customer's data on any of their computers, but there is no harm in asking them if you trust them to do so.
Hope this helps

Replacing the main board replaces all data except the External SD-Card, as the EMMC is built onto the motherboard, they can always backup the /data over QPST, where it isn't readable by any program except that one.

If you replace the motherboard you are going to lose all your information. All the information its in the old motherboard so there is no way to save your data if your motherboard is replaced.

[Q] [Help] Xperia T won't turn on, only vibrates

Hello, before proceding to explain the problem I have to say a few things:
- the phone I'm gonna talk about is not mine YET, it's a faulty Xperia T I want to purchase if I find a 80% clear and cheap solution. This means I cannot try any idea you give me on it, 'cause I don't have it.
- I'm not a total noob in firmware and hardware fixes, but not yet an expert, so I'd appreciate a few explanations in the procedures you comment.
- I'm Spanish, so don't expect perfect texts from my posts
- sorry if a thread exactly like this is already solved, but I couldn't find any clear information about this problem on a Xperia device, so that's why I asked.
Now, the problem:
This Xperia T, as the owner explains, suddenly turned off and never woke up again. When he tries to turn it on it just vibrates, but no image displays. And when he plugs it on a red LED shows up (as if the phone was charging normally), but no more life signs.
Now, these are the fixes I would try:
- reset battery, because the owner is a normal user, and, as the battery is a "non-removable" piece, I don't think he tried to pull it off and on again.
- buy a new battery because this one could be damaged and non-functional.
- jtag is discarded because this happened in a stock rom, with no root, custom recovery, flashing or anything like that.
- get a new (or, at least, functional) motherboard, because this could be sudden death.
So now you could say "if you already know which could be the problem and the solution, then why you ask?". Well, what I'm searching for is opinions, what of those problems I mentioned has the highest likelihood to be the winner, because if you all guys think the most likely problem it could be it's the motherboard, then I won't purchase the phone, because motherboards are terrifically expensive.
So thanks in advance for reading all this

Does the red LED light stay lit up while charging? Maybe you'd want to google the "rubberband method"; it's for charging the phone when it can't charge on it's own while off.

Yes, the red LED keeps lit up. I've searched for that method and I'll try it if I purchase the phone, thank you so much
But what's your opinion about what the problem could be? Or which is the most likely?
EDIT: this is the thread I found about the rubberband trick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849170, but is it called soft-bricked even when no firmware/modding stuff is involved?
RE-EDIT: ok, yes, even when no firmware/modding stuff is involved (lol)
RE-RE-EDIT: but still, if it's a hardware issue then all those tricks won't work, because there's physical damage, so that's why I asked for opinion x)
In my opinion, that behaviour is 90% due to a battery that is fried.
A broken battery is not able to supply the power needed for loading the kernel (that's why you don't see Sony logo and you can't recharge).
If you're lucky you can repair that phone with 15 euros for a new original battery.
ok guys, new information:
Apparently, the owner has way more knowledge about hardware repairing than I have, so we started talking about our ideas about all this thing and he said he already tried to reset battery, and he even replace it with a new one, so the fried-battery theory is discarded. Now I (we) think the problem could reside in the power IC, but that leads to a weld repairing, and I don't have the tools to deal with that.
So the thread is almost closed with this new info, but I still accept suggestions/opinions/ideas/whatever you wanna say, even if you enjoy typing the Macarena, at least we'll laugh with that xp

What I thought it might be was that the battery wasn't charged. It happened to me once, so I kept the power button pressed while connecting it and after a few hours I was able to use flashtool, and keep in mind that sometimes new batteries don't come charged.
But if that's not the case, then that method won't help you.

[Q] can't boot

Hello xda, I just want to ask what did happen to my G1, I'm just using it ordinarily everyday but a few days ago something happen, it cannot boot but only led lights flashing, I can't even reach the recovery or bootloader, is this a hardbrick or something? I'm using a froyo rom I forgot what rom it was and I also using the right radio and SPL combo required for that but I don't know what happen, It just can't boot. Help please.
Is it just blue led? If so then yes its bricked and you need JTAG, if not you may be OK, but as to what happened that's hard to say
May be a battery issue but with LEDs flashing less likely, try to get a PC to recognize, try charging over night and testing with PC again, try booting without SD or sim, try any button combo you can
no not blue

Hello again dem, since my phone can't boot, my laptop can't recognize it, and I'm confident enough to say that my bat. don't have any problem, I do have a universal charger and my battery are charging using it, one strange thing, I also have a cabled charger for my G1 which has a led light as well, I've tried charging it using that and the led light of my charger are blinking which means it is charging but the led light of my G1 was not blinking, I really don't know what happened to my G1, I hope you could give me some help, any way I tried to search for what JTAG is, but I think I can't do it since I don't have any ideas when regards to the hardware aspect of android, I'm even a noob on software aspect of adroid devices.
P.S.
I forgot to say this, sometimes another strange thing happen on my G1, whenever I try some button combo to reach either recovery or bootloader, my buttons and keyboards have lights but my screen is totally blocked out.

hi again dem, I don't think its on the battery, call me crazy or anything but still remember N70? I have one, though their battery differs in size yet their gold energy conductor or whatever they call it is just the same. Since the battery of the G1 are easily drained I need to have two battery but since I'm from Philippines I have hard time looking for battery of my G1 that's the reason why I used my N70 battery on it as a backup whenever my G1 runs out of its juice. Before I can successfully use my N70 battery ( I just place a paper or anything on its side and lower portion to make the fit right) but since the problem on my G1 occurred even my N70 battery are useless and unusable because it still don't boot. I know my problem is a weird one but I'm looking for a way to recover it without modifying or replacing its hardware. Don't have money for it. Hope you could help me with this. thanks.
P.S.
I never run any problem before using my N70 phone, its maybe because they have the same voltage which 3.7 the thing is their capacity. For you to believe me I attached here the photo of my G1

HELP! Mobile is keep turning off and then not turning on.

Hi,
First of all, Sorry for Bad English, Bear with me.
Long Story, Short!
It keeps happening!
It would turn off, won't reboot
Won't take charging
I will leave it for a while
If I leave it off after when I am tired trying to turn it on, a few hours later It will be WARM like it was being used, Then I would plugin again and THIS TIME IT WOULD TAKE CHARGE and EVEN REBOOT!!
After when I am using it for a while (10-12min) GOES BACK TO POINT 1
I ERASE EVERYTHING, FACTORY RESET IT, and This time.. IT would work for more than 10-12min,
I will install apps, login into the account, and then again... The same thing would start to happen! !
What Really Happen? Day ZERO!
I bought this Red Magic 3 phone 3 months ago and it was working super awesome and everything was great until last week after a 30-40 min gaming session on this phone, I went back to sleep and kept the phone on the table.
The next morning I noticed that the mobile is turned off, I thought Maybe battery drained so I plugged in to charge and continued with my morning routine.
After an hour I noticed that mobile is still not charging I tried plugging in and out multiple times and it didn't start charging, I checked the Data Cable on my MI MAX 2 (that also supports Type C) and Cable and Adapter were working fine.
I immediately realized that SOMETHING IS WRONG!!!
I saw some youtube video and I tried that Vol Key + Power Key thing and that Bios look alike menu opened up, I can see all the reboot, recovery boot, etc option but nothing worked.
So I picked the WIPE DATA option and It worked, Formatted the Phone and IT REBOOTED.
I figured maybe some software issue was causing it.
BUT SINCE THAT DAY it keeps happening!
It would turn off, won't reboot
Won't take charge when I plugin
I will leave it for a while
a few hours later It will be WARM like it was being used, Then I would plug in again and THIS TIME IT WOULD TAKE CHARGE and EVEN REBOOT!!

Service Center
They are no help! They don't know what is wrong with it, Even they formatted it in front of me they did the Factory RESET it, I tried using it in Front of them for a while and the SAME THING HAPPENED!
then they installed some updates using some official package.
But still,
IT would work for more than 10-12min,
I will install apps, login in the account
suddenly... The same thing would start happening again!
Their Resolution is :
Motherboard issue and I will have to get the motherboard replaced.
This simply means EVEN THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT and CHANGING EVERYTHING is their SOLUTION!
and they said it won't be covered on the warranty! Because the warranty has been voided BECAUSE THERE IS A SMALL CHIP on the phone! -_- which happens to be 40-50 days old.
I know is their Excuse to get money from me! Now I don't know what to do with it.
For me it was my first expensive mobile. I never bought a mobile for more than 200$.
Same thing for me.

What's your battery health at, voltage, and how many ma draw when just sitting in that app.
I've learned my lesson with this company. A couple of extra capacitative buttons and a large battery are not a reason to buy a phone. The build quality is ok, the software abysmal (I still get random **** getting pressed when I unlock the phone), and support horrendous. Do yourself a favor, threaten to speak with the governing authority in your country regarding warranties. Tell them a small crack on the screen is not indicative of internal damage. Tell them you will post a youtube review of the company and phone if they do not abide by their warranty and fix your phone.
Once you fix your phone, sell it and cut your losses.
When will people learn YouTube won't do anything. You need subscribers to have any kind of weight. I'm at 2.4m lol.
I don't know the warranty laws in your country. I know here they have to prove that what you did was the cause. Nubia is really shady and not only scams but will flat out lie all the time. I seen people had bad battery's and they say they need a replacement board.
Just let me know what I asked and we can start going in a little deeper. Start off with the basics then move into some other stuff. Could be a simple easy fix.

Any update?
I'm curious to see if this is a battery issue or something else

Ok I attempted to help you trouble shoot this issue and get it fixed but it's pretty clear this is an uphill battle and a waste of my time.

Thanks for your time.
I got the Battery Replaced thinking it was the issue but right after the installation. I turned it on to use it and it didn't work... I am still facing the same issue.. Meaning Battery was fine.. there is something else that causing it to turn off like this..!
Still, it acts like in COMA, then it heats up, I will charge it, It will boot.. If I will try using it ..it will turn off and won't turn back on!

Well.. I got the battery replaced and it was a waste of another 2,000INR. Still Facing the same issue. This means this Turning Off issue is not caused by the Battery.. It is due to something else..! :crying:
