What's happening with the current round of updates? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i read this morning that there is a new .124 firmware certified. And I'm wondering if the 114 firmware ever got released, but I don't think I've seen to much about it. Seems like there is also no widely accepted root method for 290 either. So what should we be waiting for now? Is the 114 update available yet, maybe through the PC companion or should I be waiting now for 124. Also I'm still on the Chinese firmware (just took the update in PC companion as my phone is from China) and wondering if this has any effect on me getting the ota.
I want to avoid updating anything with flashtool to avoid any potential soft bricking issues so many are experiencing.
In the end I just want stock with root. I'm holding off on anything until I know we will have a single firmware for an extended period. Can anyone clarify what's going on?

you already summed up good. we have new device and new firmware coming in a short period of time. also rooting becomes more difficult because of androids security changes.
actually i also think about going back stock and waiting for stable long term root.

[Q] Accidentally accepted update

Let me explain: So I got the OTA overnight, and when I woke up (to my alarm clock) I accidentally accepted the update. I had planned to root my phone and looked into keeping root through the OTA. I postponed it for the last two days, trying to figure out how to root/keep root through OTA. I've been busy with work and had to put it aside until I had a day off. To get to my question, am I screwed or will there be a way to root this phone after the update? This is my first Motorola phone, so pardon me if this is a dumb question. Thanks for any and all comments.

screwed for the time being. jcase already verified there's other ways to root the update but won't release them yet. in due time I'm sure someone will release something. I'm patiently waiting too.. bought a used moto x with the update already applied. sucks.
If its still within the return time, shoot compressed air in the ear piece and speakers. It'll screw it up, take it in and get a replacement. Then don't screw up the next time around.

Um... As much as I'm in favor of screwing Verizon (and all other multi-national corporations), why not just search the threads for how to use RSDLite to reflash the original stock firmware, then don't accept the OTA until you've waded through the process for keeping root? Or, you can destroy a perfectly good piece of technology for no reason.

Nope. When you bootloader updates as part of the camera update, it prevents firmware downgrades. That link is just for restoring to stock if you haven't updated.

There are other known, but unreleased, root exploits. They aren't going to be released until another major firmware upgrade (e.g., 4.4).
Thanks for the heads up guys. Not really in favor of the air method. There's nothing wrong with this phone unrooted, actually the first phone I can say that about. Just wanna tweak some things, preferably a CM MOD. Will wait for a new method.

if you are on verizon and you go to a verizon store, they are typically pretty nice there. Basically, you could walk in say that you accidentally took the OTA and you wanted to root so can give you me a new one. They will probably say yes. Or you can just say your battery drain is really bad and you have spent hours trying to fix it but people on forums said you needed to return it. The guy at my store doesn't even ask or look at my phone anymore if i bring it in...

This is good to hear... Do you happen to know if there's been any solid progress made on a bootloader unlock for Verizon? I wish I knew the first thing about Android programming so I could help out in this effort. I love my Moto X as is, but would love to see permanent root methods so we could have access to custom kernels (and so I can try to get rid of the damn NLP wakelocks).

Stuck on 4.4

Anyone else still stuck on 4.4?
I have decided not to root my phone or flash any rom that has not been directly issued to my phone by Google. I'm still too happy with my device to mess around with that.
Therefore, I decided to create a thread for the people who are still using 4.4 because they haven't got the update yet. I'm in Malta... Anyone else?
What's better than the mutual anticipation for something new, right?
Sidenote: will the update fix Google Now not working on some devices?

I think you should at least consider rooting, the benefits of that are countless. I just re-wiped my phone to stock+root so I can just sideload the 4.4.2 update.

Because it hasn't rolled out to everyone yet. Give it time if you don't want to sideload it.
I am on 4.4 and I could have done sideloading, but I don't care much. Been doing enough nightlies with i777 (ATT SGS2) until last month when it died. I like the pure G experience more than I thought (I thought I would go for CM11 immediately after I get N5 then Omni) and I see not much issue with 4.4. I don't use my phone to take a pic much - I have Fuji XE-1 and Canon 5D for that.
I will get it when I get it. Who knows.. Google might have really started nightlies and 4.4.3 is around the corner.
Edit: Well, it looks like they have decided to give it to me just now.
I just got my 4.4.2 ota update yesterday. Chose not to sideload like I did for the 4.4.1 update. My N4 got the ota update on Mon night (it's stock, not rooted). To some degree, it's all just a crap shoot.

There are just different roll-out schedules. Let me put it this way, I was on custom recovery and rooted, and saw I had 4.4.2 update (was on 4.4). So not wanting to mess anything up I went complete stock, though when I rebooted I saw I no longer had it regardless of pressing the update button a million times. So I just ended up side loading it. The reason why it probably was not there, is probably this:
Why is clearing Google Services Framework data is a bad idea?:
There is a myth that has been around for a few years that clearing data in Google Services Framework will get you the OTA faster. Android Engineer Dan Morrill has taken to reddit to explain why NOT to do this and why the method I've described in this thread is the best way to get your update quickly.
Quote:
Doing this changes the primary ID by which Google knows your device. As far as the servers are concerned, the device was basically factory reset. There are many downstream effects of this, but a big one is that this invalidates the tokens used by any app that uses GCM (which is nearly all the Google apps, and a ton of third-party apps.)
How apps react to GCM IDs changing varies by app. With Play Store you have to log out and log back in, I think Gmail usually handles it transparently eventually but won't get new mail notifications for a while, etc. Some apps you may have to clear data on to recover. All apps will simply stop getting GCM push-messages, until they get a new GCM ID; some do this frequently, others rarely, and some apps use the GCM ID as an ID on their own servers (as it is opaque and basically random), so other things besides push messages may not work.
Nothing bursts into flames, but it makes a ton of nuisances on the device, including some that can look pretty mysterious. Your mileage will vary depending on what apps you use.
All of this can be avoided by just doing an 'adb sideload' if you are impatient. -Dan Morrill

I am assuming it was no longer valid for me because my ID changed when I wiped my phone. So with that being said, your choices are to either wait, or side load.
4.4 as well ..I'll get the update eventually. No rush here.

From the sheer number of posts showing problems with sideloading, I recommend waiting for the OTA update. Why risk so many issues and buggy software just to get an update a few days earlier?

common miss-conception.
sideload is just a different channel to put the damn OTA zip on your phone. there is no higher / lower rate of issues than getting the actual OTA, you will be in the same boat.
Got tired of waiting in Dallas yesterday. I know...patience is a virtue but no a strong point of mine. Wanted to check the camera out so I side loaded both updates early last night.
My N5 has been working like a champ. Camera and speaker are definitely improved!

There are no problems with sideloading if one hasn't messed with their phone. Issues arise when one tries to sideload the OTA and they have modified files in /system.
I was using 4.4 ( unrooted ) totally original system, and got 4.2.2 update a few hours ago. I'm in Hamilton ON, Canada.

Android 5.1.1 OTA being rolled out on T-Mobile for the S6 edge!

RELEVANT TO US BECAUSE WHEN WE GET THE UPDATE, IT LOCKS THE BOOTLOADER.
IF THEY LOCK IT FOR THE S6 EDGE, THEY'LL LOCK IT FOR THE S6!
DO NOT TAKE THE OTA IF YOU DON'T WANT A LOCKED BOOTLOADER.
Unassuming Galaxy S6 edge users are in for a surprise, as T-Mobile appears to be rolling out a freshly cooked OTA based on Android version 5.1.1 Lollipop for the device. The catch, however, it is so far reported only on the T-Mobile network.
XDA forums user Sunderwear mentioned about the OTA a couple of hours back (at the time of writing this story). Urged by other users of the device, the poster also uploaded a video of his Galaxy S6 edge running the latest firmware. The video can be found at the end of this article.
As noted from the narration, the update also locks the bootloader on the device.
So, how many of you have already received the update? What do you think of it?

This type of thing might happen with a lot of updates. You need to remember the rooting/moding community is very small compared to the people who just use their phone as is. So if anything I think its weird that someone in this community got the update.

No quote. Who are you writing to?
EDIT: yes, I guess it's me.
First, I'm not in panic since I'v been waiting for months.
Second, that was the last check before shipping the tablet back, because I like(d) it a lot.
Last firmware check got no news, so I regret to say that it's not my problem any more because I'm not an M3 owner any more. As simple as that.
Of course each one of us is free to make its own choices, I'm not here to complain forever: I acted as a Consumer and the Producer was damaged by its own behaviour.
I'm not a zealot: I'm a second chancer, anyway. So maybe I will be back again with something else.
I hope that for that time, Huawei will have learned the lesson.
No quote because I am referring to the post before mine.....
I fear the harsh reality is that Huawei wont learn any lessons from your postings, no matter how often you point to them.
Anyway, best of luck with your next device.
I forced this update as soon as it popped up on FF today. Comes with November security patch, emui 5.0.1 (can't notice anything new btw), and low resolution power saving mode is still not working, but oh well. The changelog mentions better touchscreen calibration and improved battery life but I can't tell a difference. I'm pretty happy that it got updated, hopefully they'll fix the low res mode for power saving, back on emui 4 it made a big difference in battery life.
This version is not vulnerable to blueborne btw.
The only difference I've noticed from B303 after 5 days is an increase in standby battery drain. Very annoying.
Actually i have the 303 version whit firmware finder and I saw that there is a compatible version of 307 dated 20.10.2017. Are you reecomended to force the update?
