Hi Guys, this is my first post.
I am relocating to N.Y. from Europe for work and i am bringing my Galaxy Note with me of course.
I was not aware of the situation in U.S. with phone carriers and I am only beginning to grasp the things you have to suffer.
Could you please recommend me a plan. I have already contacted sprint and they refused to accept my cell phone. I am currently thinking of getting boost mobile unlimited but i can't find out if my phone is fully compatible with their service.
I have no credit history in U.S.. I would like at least 200' 100sms and a few GBs of data. Some minutes for calling landlines in Europe would also be great.
I would realy appreciate your help, feeling kind of lost in the open sea.

The only GSM carriers (which is what you need for compatiblity with the Note) are AT&T and Tmobile (Verizon and Sprint use CDMA technology which is not compatible with European phones.) Tmobile uses weird frequencies for their 3G and fauxG (HSPA+), so you would only get EDGE speeds with them on your Note. So that pretty much leaves AT&T. They're expensive compared to what you guys have; I'm sure you can find their pricing online.
There are MVNOs which appear to be carriers, but use one of the big four's networks. There are a few that use AT&T's network. One of the MVNOs, Straight Talk, has a plan that's $45 for unlimited talk, sms, and data, but there's a complicated workaround to utilize it on your Note, as they technically only offer it on a couple of their phones.
You have to buy one of their phones "compatible" with that plan (I think you can find them for $99 refurbed), take the sim card out, and put it in your Note. I haven't done this, but I've read that there's a lot more to do in order to utilize HSPA+ speeds. You'll have to search and read for more info, as this is all I know.
In addition to the great info maxh provided, I wanna say that I personally don't trust any of the "unlimited data" plans. They'll cut your data off at the most inopportune time. Classic bait & switch. You're better off with data plans that are hard limited to 2GB or maybe 5GB so you can monitor your own usage.
The Note is kinda new so not enough info is currently available online as to which AT&T MVNO's support it with 3G+ rates. I'm in the same boat as you, actually...
And there's another option. For me, since I carry a bag with me most of the time, I may eventually decide to get a MiFi with the 5GB of 4G "Walmart" plan. I'm waiting a month to see if I'll have to go that route. I ain't spending over $80/mo on voice+data combined even if I have to give up on the Note altogether. There's a limit to how spoiled I allow myself to be.

Doesn't T-mobile use the same set of 850Hz HSDPA/ HSPA tech that Telstra in Australia uses?
If so then I can tell you that stuff works fine with the note.... Best internet speeds I've ever seen on a phone.

T-mobile only 850MHz only on their GSM network (EDGE.) For 3G and 4G (not really 4G as in LTE, but faux G as in HSDPA+) they use the 1700/2100 combo. Both are needed as one is used for upload and the other for download. 2100MHz only on a phone without the 1700 will still leave you with only EDGE speeds on Tmobile.
I saw a deal for an unlocked "world" version of the note and I am on TmoUS. So if I buy the note, will I be able to use my unlimited data plan with 3g or H? I am confused reading the forums on the att side and this one...they're saying I can only get edge? Because that would really suck.
I'm on tapatalk and can't do a decent search on xda via app so if this had been asked already, just point me to that thread and I will gladly have this one deleted. Also, the desire to get the unlocked note is a spur of the moment kinda thing since the deal is only available for one day. Btw, unlocked note is selling for 585 with shipping from 1saleaday.

what they said is right you will only get edge speeds on tmobile with the inter.. Note...If you use AT&T then its no big deal.
I am also on tmo. I found an article that says you can run tmo hspa+ on att note so I'm going to try and trade line on Craigslist. Edge is killing me man.

I have T-mo US and I get H in most areas ( I live in Philly area ) as T-mo acquired some 1900mHz, but yes, the natural 700Mhz 3g/4g does not work, sorry.

Hello, so let me get this right. If I have HSPA+ in my area (which I do in Chicago) then I can run the International Note on non-edge tmobile speeds?

that depends on the frequency of the 3g network in your area.
however, this is the first I've seen it mentioned that American t mobile has any other 3g bands than 700mhz.
So I'd say no, you most likely will not get 3g speeds.
The N7000 will only run on T-Mobile edge. If you want 4g you have to AT&T or Straight Talk.

Oh well. I am going to try straight talk in a few weeks to see if that is any better.
Well, EDGE is downright terrible...no one can argue that. If you want to use T-Mobile, you're better off getting the AT-T note, unlocking it, then installing the right modem files to use it on 3g/4g. I use T-Mobile myself, and decided to keep the Int. version...I think it's better, and the development community is WAY better, mainly because the device has been out longer. It's up to you really. Don't hope T-Mobile will be updating it's 1900mhz spectrum in your area anytime soon...it's a process I'm sure will take many years.

Yes they do number porting as long as it is not a at&t number because straight talk uses at&t network.
It sucks that it is more difficult to get the inter version to work on 3g or h on tmo. I did read that the inter version is better than att version and I do believe that development will be better with the inter version as it obviously covers more countries and it has been out longer. I really want this note but I'm just gonna wait a bit. I have a feeling those guys working on getting tmo to work on inter version will be able to do it. Wishful thinking probably but it is possible with all the talented devs out there. I guess I'm going to be on sensation for a while until tmo comes up with a phone as awesome as the note. Check if your area has the TMO 1900Mhz band and if it does then you're in luck for some 3G TMO goodness.

FYI and I have heard of this issue before, Straight Talk gets varied reception in Metropolitian areas. Let me explain.
I have had ST for a few months now, on the NT7000. I have had zero issues.
A couple of caveats
DO NOT use more than 100mb/day or 2gb/month, whichever comes first. People have had their contracts terminated by ST for doing this. So not truly unlimited (but still more than decent deal). This is not a *hard* limit- I have done more without any issues by accident.
I get decent service in the suburb of NYC where I live (few tall buildings), actually much better service than Tmobile had.
However, in NYC itself, the service can be absolutely horrible depending on area. My guess for this phenomenon is that while you are on an ATT MVNO, this doesn't necessarily mean that you have the same roaming rights as regular ATT customers. In a metro area, roaming might be necessary to get signal in certain places.
My download speeds at 2gb down 1 up.
I would just buy a months' worth at first and try it out as prepaid, then port your number in.
From what I understand, you don't even need to buy the e71 like I did anymore

Which areas in Philly? I live in Philly but only manage to ever get Edge speeds on mine.
I use RedPocket. It's a MVNO of AT&T ....

I do. I got it with the SGS II and ow with the Note. up to 3mbs download. Good enough. MediaNet is $10 a month unlimited, I don't use nearly 2GB maybe less than 1 as I am in WiFi most of the time. I am using a Cingular.wap setting. Its different than the "smartphone" APN but the speeds are the same (until LTE is available) I don't need LTE speeds on a phone. I don't even get those speeds at home on cable. maybe 7Mbs DL.
The Verge reports that Google has opted not to partner with any US carriers. Every Nexus 4 will be an unlocked device, and while that means no more pointless waiting for software updates (looking at you Verizon Galaxy Nexus), it also means no LTE radios.
The other small letdown is the phone's meager onboard storage options. The Nexus 4 starts at $299 with 8GB; $349 gets you 16GB

But this really concerns me the point of a quad-core when you don't have the storage to download more than 1-2 games that will utilize the specs? For example, most Gameloft and EA games that could use these specs are easily 1.8 gb or more. On an 8gb phone, unless you use cloud services, I'll cry within a few months for sure. I wish Google can ditch the idea of having only internal storage (Yeah !!! Like that's ever gonna happen but still) and come up with external storage like on the S3 and note 2 .. a 32gb MicroSD card for all my music, videos, camera pictures, files etc..

if I go with this I would use the USB OTG and stickmount app I use on my nexus 7. I've done pretty good using dropbox and a 16gb flash drive with my 8gb N7. Wondering if the photo sphere will be able to be ported to my Sprint SG3. And yeah 300 for a phone and no commitment is awesome.
Bummer. No LTE means a lost sale from me. Bandwidth is everything. Maps, directions, movie times, sports scores, traffic updates, email attachments... LTE.
Very strange decision by Google to abandon LTE.

Agreed. Even though is nice to have the feature, HSPA+ is good enough for my needs.
I'm grandfathered into Unlimited LTE with Verizon... WTH am I supposed to do?!? I'm assuming I either have to wait it out OR jump on the Note 2

T-mobile hasn't announced if there will be any differences from the Play Store version so no one knows at this point. But I would be surprised to see a different radio just for HSPA+42.

I suspect most people's experience with 3G is limited to crappy Sprint and VZW's 3G networks. In that case, it could be a deal breaker.....1-2mb/s down is pathetic. Now, T-Mobile users have no issue as their "4G" network is very fast. Not sure about ATT's, but I think it is similar to T-Mobile's now.
Sweet.. im almost gonna finish my job in india by the time I head back home i can depend on t mobile... and sell my unlocked s3 for public purpose and keep my note 2 for gaming, artist and business related purposes...... cuz im soooooooo gonna get the nexus 10... the screen ppi & battery.. this tablet screen hands down beats any ipads or any tablets on the market... Nexus 10 is a beast...

Yeah you're probably right. CDMA 3g networks suck. The 3g gsm networks in the states are much better. As long as you have signal service of course.
I use a 3g tmobile and those speeds are enough. Not the higher speed 4g branded speeds either. The 7.2mbit HSDPA radio.
I agree that speed is good and all that. But I am really starting to get annoyed by people dropping LTE as nothing more than a buzzword.

Same here...I get like 5 down and 1.5-2 up on my 7.2 mbit radio so anything will be an upgrade. I suspect the Nexus 4 will top out around 10-12 down and the same 1.5-2 up on T-Mobile.

Bingo. The 3G service is deprecated and the apps are requesting more and more data. So when you initially said "none" you were completely wrong. For example, the WSDOT app I used now is updated, and slower than ever. It gets a GPS lock then just grinds forever trying to sync up the map and traffic advisory overlays. That's all data. Since I am paying for smartphone monthly usage, I am wasting money now by continuing with 3G. It makes zero sense to perpetuate paying for 3G service. It's not a buzzword when it's a significant upgrade in throughput, and it can be any other acronym and I'd use that just as much.
I still think google is off their rocker to "wait it out" as they put it. And the Maxx HD television advertisement says it can do voice and data at the same time, on Verizon... if true, that would be pretty huge for us Verizon folks and our terrible CDMA 3G access, going to LTE and simultaneous voice/data.
There is a difference between the gsm networks that the phone will actually run on and the CDMA /lte a Verizon or Sprint version would.
When people say I can't go without lte over att / T-Mobile networks for those tasks its rubbish to me.
Sure sprints and Verizon 3g is awful and I would never go back to them ( or have been on them in the first place) but we aren't comparing lte speeds to those. Its against the unlocked gsm networks.
Verizon network is great coverage wise. So is its lte speeds and coverage. Those are valid reasons to be with them and not switch.
But that I can't leave my lte speeds for a unlocked gsm phone because of the speed for the most basic smart phone tasks .is nonsense to me. That is what I am seeing more and more off. The omg I can't live without my lte /buzzword crap.
So I have been searching to see if all available T-Mobile bands are open and ready on the moto x for tmobile if I moto Make an AT&T version and then unlock?
I do not want edge so if HSPA and LTE are available then I am leaning towards this route. Anyone know for sure?
I bought an att moto x and unlocked it and using t-mobile from past 20 days and i am getting 4g LTE same as my previous iphone 5 did and signal strength i can say even better than iphone. I dont know about bands and stuff but LTE works on my end

If you customize through MotoMaker right now and buy the AT&T version off-contract, then you will default to T-Mobile Edge speeds wherever they haven't yet refarmed to the 1900MHz band, which their 4G (and also the same band AT&T uses). It doesn't have the 1700MHz band that T-mobile uses in conjunction with the 2100MHz band to deliver HSPA+ speeds wherever the refarm hasn't happened (which is a LOT of places as of right now). Save yourself the frustration and just buy the T-Mobile version from Motorola's website, which has support for T-Mobile Edge, HSPA+, and 4G. All your bases will be covered at that point. Plus it works on AT&T as well, so thats an added benefit.

Believe me, I felt the exact same way and ended up doing the MotoMaker Unlocked route; and now I'm waiting to ship it back and just get the T-Mobile one. It really isn't worth all the hassle for the customization in my opinion. Dropping from LTE to Edge is a huge pain
I was having this same LTE drop to edge thing and it sucks. I was aware that this would happen however and since I have an att moto x I'm switching to aio today. The LTE coverage here in Sacramento has too many holes in it. Gotta love no contract freedom!

Thanks for this kind of response. I was just about to pull the trigger on dealing with an ATT motomaker on tmobile, but I think I can wait one more month.

I actually already have it on Verizon. Took a long look at myself after paying full retail for it to keep my unlimited data, and decided that I'd had enough. It's on its way back now, and my trusty gnex will carry on it's last breath.

I've got an unlocked AT&T MotoX on T-Mobile in Chicago, luckily the area downtown and surrounding the city are re-farmed 1900mhz or 4G LTE; guess I'm lucky so far because I haven't had really bad frustration dropping to edge.
Does anybody know if its confirmed when AT&T's exclusivity ends that T-Mobile will be able to have custom MotoMaker ability (in a month)?

I know MetroPCS piggyback off of tmo, but does anyone have any concrete info whether the nexus 6 will just work as intended on metroPCS, utilizing the same frequency/radio band as tmo? TIA!

T-Mobile and MetroPCS use the same bands and towers. The Nexus 6 will work perfectly on both.
However, when it comes to network saturation, T-Mobile Post-paid customers get priorizitation over MetroPCS, pre-paid, and MVNO subscribers. But that has nothing to do with the phone. The phone itself will work the same exact way on Metro as it would on T-Mo.
I'm curious if anyone has ever actually activated one and seen it work first hand because Metro says the Motorola XT1103 is NOT compatible. Sorry for necro'ing a thread but I'm dying to leave sprint and they're the only decent unlim carrier around me without paying $100+/mo to get near unlim.

metropcs is owned by tmobile, and uses tmobiles towers. my n6 i bought from tmobile. a few friends are on metro, one with a n6. hes using fine on metro. his only problem is that you dont get tmobiles full lte speeds on metro, they are slowed down. for example, wjen standing near each other, i get 50mbps download, while he gets 7mbps download speed. on the same towers! lol.
as others have said, it'll work. Screenshot attached shows speeds on LTE in the lower/mid-Hudson Valley, NY.

I have and it works 100%. I have a line on metro that I had my nexus 6 on which is now on my tmobile line for business and one plus 2 on metro but it works fully even HQ call feature. Every aspect works as if it was on tmobile so dont sweat it.

Yeah, I'm not worried about the speeds... I'll usually pull 30-75 down and put up 15-30 on my crappy free 4g lte phone I used with Metro when I had to send my N 6 in for repair... That's not the issue. On their site, they tell me my Nexus 6 is not compatible on their network. I know mine is sprint but, I have all the radios and bands for GSM and CDMA just like the rest of the Nexus 6's. That was why I asked.

its all the same nexus 6, no differences, no matter where you buy it. only difference is between the us version and international version, then its only different lte bands.

I get that's what it's supposed to be. But why would metro piece of **** tell me I can't then? It's not they they got the dumb and said, "you can't because your phone is CDMA." I didn't speak to a person. It's their company saying no phone not compatible. Idk if I have US or int'l tho. I have tdd and fdd LTE capabilities, which from what I understand, most other countries use tdd because 1/2 the bandwidth, double the porn. ?

Yeah the MetroPCS compatible search is old and outdated trust me the N6(XT1103) works on MetroPCS
Here is another user with n6 and metropcs. Just got the microsim from their website and activated it with my imei number and done.
I'm on a Nexus 6 with MetroPCS and have no issues. With metro you need to call them to add the imei number of the device to their data base.

When I had MetroPCS- WiFi calling (which I needed because Metro/Tmo don't have signal at my house) only worked for calling and SMS. MMS sending and receiving didn't work. But LTE and everything else worked fine.
Can anyone chime in and say if WiFi calling works with MMS now? I might want to switch back, especially now if they still have the 2 lines for $60 with 6gb of data promotion.
