Rooted stock firmware won't run custom recovery? - Galaxy S III I9305 (4G LTE + 2GB RAM) Q&A, Help &

Hello,
I've been running stock rooted 4.1.2 for a while but my phone randomly reformatted itself last night so now I'm going to keep regular backups of my Rom.
I tried to boot into. CWM Recovery but I keep getting the stock recovery.. if I use Rom manager and flash CWM followed by an automated "reboot into recovery" then it boots into CWM but until I reflash CWM within Rom manager I can only get stock.
I want to try a few roms out so I'd like to "permanently" flash a custom recovery before making a backup!

try philz touch, it has a function to remove the auto-flash stock recovery. Otherwise there's a method in the general root thread if you want cwm.

Clockworkmod recovery not booting after a full system boot

Can anyone give me a explanation why after installing rom manager and the clockworkmod recovery i can imediatly boot into recovery, but after doing a normal system boot and try again do boot into recovery (through rom manager or even manualy pressing power + vol down) i can´t??? It stops at a black screen with a white exclamation triangle and a android icon. If i go through flashing the recovery again (in rom manager) and after that i press "reboot into recovery" it works well. But thats the only time i can. Meannig: i have to flash the clockworkmod recovery every time i want to go there. Is this normal? Is it rom manager? clockworkmod recovery? or the Android OS? I´m on a rooted Nexus with a unlock bootloader (androidroot) running stock froyo. What can i do to make the clockworkmod recovery stick?
I´m a newby in flashing roms, and i would love to try a modified rom. But for that to happen i need to have full trust in the apps i´m using to do that. Until now i can´t say that i feel confident to go through with the flashing process. Any help would be much apreciated.

I also have the same problem with AmonRA Recovery. After a long search for the answer thru google search, I found out that Custom Recovery won't stick with the Stock ROM. You need to flash your N1 with a custom ROM then only the Custom recovery will work. If you do a nandroid restore back to the stock rom, the custom recovery will disappear again. You need to reflash the custom recovery again to get you back to the custom recovery screen for flashing custom ROM.
Thank you for the quick answer

same problem with stock frg83
thank you taksei
EDIT: found how to disable:
mv /system/recovery-from-boot.p /system/recovery-from-boot.p.bak
mv /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /system/etc/install-recovery.sh.bak

If you would read the recovery installation instructions in Wiki, you'd notice the instructions for removal of those 2 files, that rewrite the recovery on system boot.

CWM Recovery reboot fail...

Hey guys I've rom FROYO.XWJPA with ROOT and I want install CWM recovery from Rom Manager. Then i click Flash cwm recovery the operation is successful, but then I try reboot to cwm recovery my phene have still samsung recovery... what is wrong?
I had the same problem. I solved it by flashing an update.zip of the CWM recovery from the Samsung recovery. It worked by flashing two times, first time didn't work ^^
Pretty sure that ROM manager doesn't actually flash the recovery the way you think. It just allows you to boot into it from within the app. Open ROM manager up and try booting into it from there.
Or just install a kernel that has a built in CWM recovery.
Problem solved

Phone Not Holding CWM?

So I am planning on to try the Bugless Beast on the wife's Moto Droid. The phone is rooted and holding root. I flash CWM via rom manager and it boots into CWM. HOWEVER !! If I re-boot the phone and then power it down and go back into recovery, it is back to stock recovery and not CWM.
How to permanently install CWM as doing it via rom manager seems to be a temporary flash? Odd ...
I'd hate to get half way through a rom flash and have it puke and be stuck with stock recovery !! Is there a link to a zip file copy of CWM I can flash onto the phone?
What am I missing here?

[Q] Recovery doesn't "stick"?!

Hello guys,
I would like to flash a different version of CWM onto my N7000 but somehow it does not stick.
I currently run AOKP 4.1.2 and it has 6.0.1.5 as CWM which always gives you the md5 generation error when you do a nandroid backup.
I've installed Rom Manager and downloaded a different version of CWM and tried to install it both with Rom manager and also in CWM itself.
On the first boot after I flash some other recovery like the one from rom Manager (6.0.1.2) it actually loads the new recovery and lets me do a sucessful nandroid for example, but when i reboot into recovery another time the old recovery is back.
When I flash a new rom though, the CWM does get permanently replaced. I flashed a different rom which came with CWM 6.0.2.8 and then I permanently had that version. (same behaviour when I tried to overwrite it with the 6.0.1.2, wouldnt stick).
I even tried just partially restoring the nandroid and leaving boot out, but then phone will get stuck on boot.
Is there any way to permanently flash a recovery to the note without overwriting the whole boot.img? CWM and Rom Manager do not seem to be able. Maybe Heimdall or ODIN? Been so long since I had to use them..
Hope someone knows whats goin on with the recoveries.?!
because the recovery is in the kernel. to change recovery, you need to change the kernel. MD5 error is a known bug in AOKP.
you can use this

to make a nandroid backup on AOKP roms

thanks man, yea i got some tools installed that should be able to do a nandroid from running system, was just wondering if there is a way to permanently switch the recovery - it is sometimes booted, right after flash but then its gone - so there must be a way to stop the restore or?
Or are there any custom aokp kernels out there for the n7000? usually they only support TW or CM as far as I saw, or only older versions.

[Q] Can't get rid of Philz Recovery

Evening guys,
so 2 days ago I flashed the Philz Recovery for testing. While I had the recovery on I flashed the latest Nightly of the Slim Kat Rom + Cyodak Kernel also for testing.
Ofc I backed up my files be4 doing so. Today I just recovered my backup, went to recovery again but the Philz recovery was still there. '''kk no prob i thought,
just flash the CWM Touch recovery again'' so I did, rebooted back into recovery mode and what happened? Instead of booting into the cwm recovery, there's
still the philz recovery. While in philz on the bottom left it shows "Philz Touch 6.48.4 and ClockworkMod v6.0.5.0" So no Idea what to do and it gets frustrating tho..
Thx in advance .
You didn't flash CWM again, or not properly, unless you wouldn't have PhilZ still.
well there's nothing much I could do wrong. Reboot into Recovery -> Install Zip from ext. SD -> choose the CWM Recovery -> Install -> Reboot into Recovery and CWM should be there right?
Also i've tried to restore the backup which I made be4 installing the Philz recovery. Backup was a success but once i'll boot into recovery it's the philz recovery again.
Backups do not contain recovery.
rly? Cuz my backup backups also the boot.img + the recovery. Anyway what am I going to do now? I've tried several ways, even flashing the TWRP as a zip, flashing via flashify or Rom Manager, no matter what I do I always end up in the philz recovery even when it says flash successfull.

You can use fastboot to flash recovery.
