(Mod) OUYA Store and Custom Launcher running on the Shield!! - Shield Android Development

I have manage to get the OUYA store running on my Nvidia Shield!
The official Ouya Launcher does not get the job done no matter I've tried,
So i tried some of the alternative launchers, and low and behold... It worked!!
The Ouya launcher in which i used was Custom OUYA Launcher by Manuel Etchegaray.
It works pretty well but in an hour of playing around, it has froze up twice.
Video of it in action!
http://youtu.be/-ZsRk3FzqkM
*pardon my cell phone camera...It sucks!

Thanks for sharing this
Will try to test this during the weekend!
Cheers,
anthonws

Just install ODK 0.0.6 onto the shield, manual inject the OOBE.apk from any OUYA rom, Create a new account (wont let you log on to existing). Install Custom OUYA launcher and there you go.
The only benefit i noticed is you can actually get a free copy of Order & Chaos by gameloft (free on OUYA) thats about it. thats why i stopped toying with it.

Not the store...

Could you post a guide on how to make it work?
I would like to test it on my shield.
Thank you.

I tested the amazing frog apk from rooted ouya, on shield, and controller mappings work, without this rom, on stock 4.3, haven't tried on 4.4 from todays update, I hope the shield gets more support, as this whole thread on the shield seems to become more dead by the minute, but wwjoshdew seems excited, I cant wait for his video, if he sees this I would be happy!

Oh I just now see it after searching my name.
There will be OUYA videos eventually, but with the FireTV getting root... It's my firm belief that it killed the OUYA. I know, I have both.

Commercially, it was never really alive. Only in the minds of the true believers in the forums. Were It not for the venture capital millions, Ouya would be buried next to the ET cartridges.

Hey Hey now. I Kickstarted the Ouya and while it may not be the ultimate powerhouse console it never set out to be, I still enjoy the hell out of the tiny box. Makes a great portable Media Player/Light Android gaming platform/Trivia Game Night system with the Jack Pack, etc.

You're right! I bought it awhile ago and wasn't to impressed. I loaded up some roms and there is a significant improvement. Thanks for the heads up.

n64oid was available on the market for a short time and removed by the author for a few months while it undergoes improvements. It should be back soon, but it's not currently available.
Read that it should be up by late may so anytime soon

where/how are you guys getting ROMS for this and the playstation emulator?
i used to use what I believe was called Rom Finder (premium) but I believe it was removed from the market. and even upon side loading the SDK it tells me that I need the newest version to download ROMS. any suggestions for using this or a new source? I would prefer a direct app on the xoom to do this although i havent been able to find another one.
You just can search it on Google, and for the ROMS, in any web of ROMS and Emulator, just watch the end of the file "Example.N64". If there's no problem for some mods or something i can upalod the apk.
See ya!
I have this emulator and i use it with my xbox 360 controller. It works pretty good but i cant get it to recognize the l2 and r2 buttons. Other than tha is great.

are the analog sticks actually input in analog---that is to say, when you tilt the stick just a little, does your character walk slowly or whatever the case would be?
Mentions of pirated app stores removed. Lets keep talk of this off XDA, k?
I purchased the N64oid and had a backup on Titanium. I restored it and the app works fine but I can't open any of my game zips. To my knowledge N64oid doesn't need a BIOS right? I downloaded my ROMS from coolrom but they don't open. Any ideas. I'm dying for Mario Kart 64.

Make sure they are zip and not rar....but on a different note:
No one worry because sooner or N64oid will come back to the Market the dev is really trust worthy and responds to emails quickly.
P.S. - Sorry for this but if someone can, can they help me with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1072807
They are .zip. This happens with the 3 different ROMs I have.

You are right no BIOS needed. I have Honeycomb 3.1 with the latest Tiamat Xoom 1.4.2 and it runs great. I had purchased this app before it was in the market. I had to reinstall N64oid when I updated to 3.1 since all my applications were cleared.
Since you purchased this legitly on the android market you shouldn't have to worry. Remove the Titanium Backup version. Go to the Android Market and your purchased apps and install from there. Even though its removed from market since you purchased it you should still have access to download it like I do. Hopefully it will start working for you then!
i'm more concerned about gensoid being taken down than n64oid coming back up. that emu definitely needed a few updates that we probably wont get.

It just automatically does. Can anyone else confirm this? Did you originally purchase on the Xoom or another device? Another way to tell is if you look at the web version of the marketplace it should be on your purchased list.

Unfortunately no. It thinks its the d pad so when you push the stick, its in all the way. Also you cant program the dpad and analog sticks differently.

OUYA ROM and other question

Hi guys, I was wondering if the ROM of OUYA is already available online to be changed, and if it is not it can be moved by connecting the console to the PC? Or the console's USB port is not suitable for this purpose? And having already Ouya the ROOT else is already installed the Recovery? or you have install? And how can you get into Recovery? Ok maybe it's still a bit too early for these questions since it is still in the hands only of those who have contributed to the project on Kickstarter but if anyone was informed I'd like
I"m assuming you'll be able to use ADB and what not. Ouya said, the standard Ouya can be used to develop games, so it would seem reasonable all Ouya's can be connected to a PC, and I assume the USB port will be sufficient.
As for the rest, I think it's just a tad early to know with certainty. The only well know people to have the any units are those early dev kits, and some of hardware reviewers. I haven't heard or read, nor do I believe they would release the Ouya ROM. And based on what Ouya has stated, it looks like we're getting late beta firmware/rom since they want to add more features, improve performace, and other items based on developer and early backer feedback before the June launch in retailers.
I really would like to see ROM customization for the OUYA as I feel duped by the fact that it won't run my pre-purchased play store apps and games. There's got to be a way to have both. I want this thing to replace my PS3 as my entertainment center but I must have Google music working to do so. I also want to play my purchased games like NFS.

It'll run em, you just have to sideload it.
Ouya said the condole would be rootable and they would be including the instructions on how to do it. Now we just have to wait until someone receives theirs and see if this is true or not?
The OUYA is simple to root. I think any generic ICS root method would work. Google Glasses was rooted by Jay Freeman just by a little tweaking, and a generic. ICS root method. I'm picking up on and plan to help as much as possible.

It was rooted quickly because there wasn't any locks on it. One of the developers at Google even said it's hardly considered rooting because there were no barriers to break through.
Mine is sitting at home waiting for me right now, so I'll start looking into building a Custom ROM for it this weekend probably.

Just be careful, because of the lack of entering fastboot/recovery during bootup, you can easily soft brick it. I've already heard of someone messing with the system and bricking. Plus you can't really build much of an custom rom without kernel source, I wouldn't seeing an better stock but won't change much for right now.

Thanks for the concern Paulenski, not jumping into anything without looking ahead. I'm not talking about Cyanogenmod or anything as far as custom ROM's go. I just want to put together a flashable zip that will install working gapps, su, busybox, an alternate launcher, etc. A "start here" package. Not that it could be flashed yet, but I've contacted Koush and Teamwin about porting a custom recovery.

Fair enough. Ammend that statement to say "It'll run most sideloaded apps, provided no additonal downloads/framework is required." I hadn't actually started playing with the console when I said that.
However, if you have an android phone you might be able to install it on there, download the extra data, and copy those files/folders over to the ouya. Might be worth a shot.

Oh I am so excited for some good customs ROM's. I am also not looking for CWM for a main ROM in general, but a amazingly beefed up Ouya layout, as its not as well as it should be visually and organized. And I know MANY will be using XBMC as a media center, I feel that should be a big part of the customs ROMs. I am loving mine so much already running the android version of XBMC. So excited for the future!!

Works for a handful of games, GTA3 is the biggest. Does not work for most I've tried, including gameloft games and Carmageddon.
Unfortunately I did not keep notes when I began trying sideloading apps. I do know that some backups from Android Tuner worked when those from Titanium Backup did not. I also used ES file explorer for some backups as well.

Looking forward to it I was a little angry when I got my console and Google play was not in it. Ouya made this big thing about being completely open and what do they give us a great android gaming platform that you are not allowed to use unless you hack it or buy games from them. that should be an optional market not the only choice. I bought the Ouya so I can play my android games that I have already purchase from the play store. Ouya great product horrible execution. on the lunch you looked a little like f-ING Apple Please correct this. sorry for leaving this on your post if you want you can forward to Ouya too angry to think straight.

that sound great and I understand it's their way of making money but I payed for the console because I thought it would be the one console that allows the owners meaning me not Ouya to decide what I have on it. When I think android I think freedom of choice, no limitations placed on the end user by the manufacturer. They can still make a lot of money without getting greedy if they have great products and a great user friendly interface of course i will buy from their market. but I want to do it by choice and not because I do not have one. They need to be reminded that this is not apple once you sell the product it is no longer yours it becomes the property of the consumer. and the consumer shows his or her appreciation by continuing to do business with them. Microsoft just proved what greed can do to a franchise, Ouya should not force People away. I feel I they gave the End User what He/She wants and add what they want to it they will be surprised by the result. have your market as an option not the only option and you will win a loyal fan base.
While I understand the desire for the play store I believe it should not come pre-installed. The Ouya is not a phone or tablet and thus the play store content can hardly be considered compatible. As long as Ouya reframes from deliberately blocking third partys from adding it, we can't reasonably be mad at them.

@superjay The problem is that they are deliberately keeping us from accessing it. If this was based purely on AOSP without gapps installed then there would be no problem, but there have been many of us working different angles trying to get the Play Store working on the Ouya for over a month now. The only "Custom ROMs" that are flashable are based on the Ouya framework, no one has been able to get an AOSP based rom to work, and it looks like professorpoptart has bricked his while trying. Since Ouya doesn't have any hardware button combination to access recovery, and have locked access to NVRAM, the console is still very brickable.
They claim to be open, but when you really get down to it, they're "open" for app developers, but not hackers. Which means we just have to find ways around their protections and that takes time. I'm hoping now that there's a retail launch some more experienced android hackers will take an interest and some progress will be made again. It's been mostly stagnant since we ported CWM recovery over. I'm really glad to see MasterZen88 got these optimizations done, and I'm looking forward to trying out this ROM when he posts it, but I'm far more excited about the prospect of installing CM10 and really opening this box up.
@MasterZen88 I hope I haven't offended with anything I said above, I'm not familiar with your work, but it's always great to have more developers on board. Feel free to email or PM me if I can help you with testing, or if you want to know some of what I have tried in my own pursuit of getting the play store and/or CM10 working on the Ouya.

Can sideload XBMC by going to their website and using the Android version off there. I've been happily using that to watch videos... someday I'll finish the original Doctor Who series. Partially through season 12 so far. -_- Only 14 more full seasons after this one to go. Whee.

Ok, totally off topic, but you brought it up. The reason I haven't watched Dr. Who is because of the missing episodes in the early seasons. How much did that impact your enjoyment of the series?
cannot wait, i actually really like this Ouya. there is so much potential!

The episode-set we watched had reconstructed versions of everything. Most had at least the original audio, but... those weren't my fav episodes. They didn't make me want to not continue watching the entire series or want to skip them. Sometimes frustrating though...
If it works for your style, I highly suggest watching those episodes while multitasking playing a game or doing some light coding. Something to distract you from the fact that you're only hearing the audio with subtitles to let you know what was supposed to be happening on the screen.
One other thing this ROM will "need" is the ability to prevent automatic updates. The default Ouya launcher (at least I THINK its the Launcher) actually automatically downloads & installs OTA-style updates with zero user prompts, which is presently a great way to just spontaneously have your ROM blown away.
Also, any word on CWM getting to where we can actually boot into that consistently? I'm a bit LESS gunshy about bricking my Ouya now that they're available to the general public (I got mine via KickStarter like a month ago), but I'd still really prefer to have a graceful way to re-stock / bring my system back from the dead if needbe

I'm wondering if you delete the ota url address in the build.prop if that will do it.
Also has anyone added ro.usb_host = 1 supposed to help with usb storage but not confirmed.
I'm slightly fixated on the build.prop today looking at all the diffferences. Between the ouya and a phone.

Graphing Calculator App?

Sorry if starting a new thread isn't exactly appropriate. I wasn't certain what to search for, but I was wondering if there was a graphing calculator app that could run on our Nooks, similar to the stock calculator on CM11. That would be convenient for my Algebra work. Thanks!

I'll look around a bit more, but I haven't had any luck on this before. I've been looking for an app ike this since I started Algebra 1 last year.
Algebra 2 is great, isn't it?

If only WabbitEmu worked on 2.1. That would be almost perfect.
As for Algebra 2, it's an okay class when you have a good teacher... In my class, about ten people almost failed until they decided a D to a 0.5. And now this quarter that's not happening and alongside passing, we have to also make a 2.0 GPA to stay in the school (since it's a magnet school). Also, it's kinda funny how we keep running into each other today, wouldn't you agree?

Well, I'm homeschooled, so Algebra 2 is taught by my mom/a computer program, and it's super fun and easy for me.
Definitely funny - especially considering we're around the same age.
Ive actually had a bit of luck with Andie Graph(just had to get the roms through other means online) and it runs pretty nicely on the eink screen

Great, I'll give it a go!
Just because I'm lazy, would you post the .apk? You can find it in /data/app.

I would, if I still had it installed Its from the google play store, it shouldnt be that bad to download it there
Wow! That app is better than sliced bread
Back in the day I used to run the Virtual TI on my laptop to show students what I was talking about and to run various lab instruments for demo purposes. I don't imagine I could do that with this app but I bet it would run an isotope half-life simulation I wrote for the calculator. Gotta try and dig that up just for fun.
Thanks for mentioning the app!

True, but not true - I don't have Play installed and don't want to go through all the trouble of downloading multiple wrong-version .apks from the Internet. That's why it'd be great if you could post the .apk.

I don't have my Nook in front of me now, so I can't tell you version compatibility, but I got it on my phone. I have posted the *.apk here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ro0q5bwua4xyxkr/net.supware.tipro-1.apk?dl=0
For legal reasons, I can't include the ROM image of course, but you can find it elsewhere. It is suggested to pull it straight from a real calculator, but mine's an NSpire with an 84 keypad, which doesn't allow you to image the 84 ROM for some reason, and the images from TI's website don't work, so I'm at a loss with this app.

Okay, I'll try that link.
Kind of lost on the other stuff
So I got the chance to load Andie on my Nook (the version in my Dropbox works). Works like a charm! Attached are some pics. As far as obtaining a ROM goes, you can get WabbitEmu (on a newer device of course) and use that to compile a ROM (I think the 83 Plus is the newest that Andie supports). From there, extract it from /data/user/0/com.Revsoft.Wabbitemu/cache/ (the file should be named "calculator name.ROM) and copy it to the Nook's SD card (anywhere is fine as long as it's on the card).

Gaming frustrations

Just a little aggravated with the tablet. Excellent screen but new games like KOTOR and Witcher battle arena are not compatible with it. What gives?

I just tried witcher battle arena and it installed and crashed at start. I think its just some ironing out they need to do. If it says It isnt compatable. Im not sure what it is. Just contact the developer and give them a log if you're rooted or just report it.
Kotor says its $5.80 Here. Does not say its not compatible. Not too sure.
Another thing you could try if you're rooted is switch to a lower resolution. Maybe it doesn't support the full resolution
the thing is, I'm currently running stock rooted. Just irks me that my Note 3 picks up everything, but my TF701 doesn't. You'd think almost everything could run blazing on a tegra 4. And I know how to sideload. I just feel irritated that I have to considering Tegrazone advertises these titles.

Ya I know what you mean. The real problem is developers have to support thousands of devices now, all with different versions and configurations.
I just tested witchers battle arena on the nexus 7 with lp just to see and that is a no go either. Doesn't matter to me anymore anyway. A game has to be pretty good for me to even look. For gaming if anything I just use steam Linux.
When the Google Play Store says an app is "not compatible" with your device, it doesn't necessarily mean your device is incapable of running it. I think it is more likely that our TF701T is not on a whitelist of devices tested and approved by the developer. The fact that the TF701T did not sell well, and hence is less likely to be used to test an app by developers, is going to be a problem for games. Also, some apps are region restricted; I remember I couldn't install any paid apps from Mainland China, even though I could install the same apps while in Hong Kong.
Nonetheless, I think sideloading a game is no big deal. I installed KOTOR on my TF701T and it works great (though I'd still prefer a controller or mouse and keyboard).
Don't know if this will help. But what I've done sometimes, is see if I can download the game for my phone. And even pay for it if needed. Then, using an APK extractor app, I get the apk as a file. Connecting to my computer, I can shift the apk to my tablet, maybe through Dropbox. Then, I install the game to my TF701T.
This doesn't always work, naturally. And it depends on whether your phone is on the whitelist for the game. But at least, this is a workaround.
Good Luck.

It's called "Apk Extractor", version 3.0 by Meher Prasad.
I am pretty sure any root explore will allow you to copy the apk from /data/app/*yourappnamehere* to your sd card and then do what ever you want with it...
