To unlock or not to unlock that is the question - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have a note 3 Att branded. And they are a bunch of A$$holes and willnot unlock the device because i am the second owner.
yes it has a clean Imei. So I have been debating on the option of Unlocking my device through a web site.
I currently use it with straight talk with the BYOP program so i use a ATT sim. But I have been having issues with MMS messages,
from what i have been reading this is mainly a ATT issue. so I thought if I use a Tmobile sim card it may correct the issue.
what do you think?

Just putting this out there in case it's remotely helpful for you, I went through that insanity with a preowned iPhone 4 from ATT that I wanted to use with T-Mobile and I solved it by going in the opposite direction. I went to T-Mobile. Might be the neighborhood but the nice people there pointed me to a nearby electronics store who also did cellphone unlocking and for a fee that I can't remember off the top of my head they used some internal system and got my phone factory unlocked within 24 hours, after ATT had told me that they wouldn't do it.
If you happen to live in New York I can tell you where I went, otherwise I can say go look for a local electronics store and see if they'll submit the request for you... Or ask at your local T-Mobile store whether they know a store who does unlocks. I don't understand enough about this stuff to explain but I can at least relay that it worked out well enough for me. The iPhone 4 worked fine with T-Mobile afterwards.

I have always used ebay or an "unlocking" site. I have used both methods quite a bit because I sell phones on ebay and I used to work for a friend that owns a couple prepaid phone/service stores. I also worked at a small tech repair store and did unlocks there as well. Anyway my point is that the government and the phone companies have made it a lot harder and more expensive to unlock newer phones. Also I would do your research on tmobile in your area before spending too much money on unlocking. It may be different for you but in my area tmobile and sprint suck as far as coverage. Plus tmobile doesn't have lte.

[Q] Unlocking Droid 4 for International

I have a friend who's interested in buying my Droid 4. And he wanted me to unlock it for him, so I was looking around... pretty much everything out there looks like a scam (either it wants me to install software, and makes me take a survey to get a password, or they want $28 for a code, etc)
He lives in Italy, uses the Wind network, which he says uses 4G LTE. I've seen on other posts that it doesn't need to be unlocked to be used internationally... is that correct? Or would I have to do something in order for him to use it?
Right now I've got my Verizon SIM card in there, obviously I would remove that before selling it to him. Can it be used with the stock ROM and still work internationally?
Should be no problem. I have used my D4 in Germany. Just popped in a local SIM, got a text which provided the necessary changes for APNs, and was good to surf and call away. My Droid is stock rooted, but I don't think you need to have root.

So basically, any of those sites claiming to help you "unlock" the Droid 4 are scams?
Well, don't know what they claim to do. But you only need to unlock if you want to use a different provider within the US. Verizon locks you to their network within the US. Outside you can have any provider you like.
Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk now Free
They claim to give you an "unlock code"... which as far as I know doesn't even exist or it would be common knowledge by now.
But that's nice to know, I've never traveled abroad with a cellphone (I didn't even own a phone back in 2006 when I went to England) so I thought "unlocking" a phone was a universal thing to remove carrier restrictions.
No unlock required
I just got back from Ireland. Per Verizon's instructions, I had originally called the International Customer Support number to have it unlocked for European GSM usage. Customer support informed me at the time, that the phone is unlocked for international GSM from the factory. Once I arrived, I just swapped out the Verizon SIM card for a local one. It took a little configuration to get the APN/MMS settings correct, but the local phone rep was able to fix all those basic settings.
Good Luck. I'm sure everything will go smoothly for you.

[Q] Possible to buy T-Mobile Note 4 outright and bring to AT&T MVNO?

Hey guys, been doing some digging and haven't found anything conclusive so I was wondering if you all could help me out. I would like to buy a Note 4 if and only if a few certain conditions are met and I'm trying to figure out how to accomplish that.
1) I'm really loving how far Samsung has come with toning down TouchWiz, but I still would want root to remove bloatware, install some xposed modules, etc. So far the AT&T variant has no root capability.
2) Having an unlocked bootloader is not a must, but it is a plus. I actually don't want to give up some of the OEM Note features.
3) I have absolutely zero T-Mobile service where I live, so AT&T or their MVNOs are really my only option for a GSM phone
4) 4G LTE is a must
so-
I was wondering if it would be possible to buy a Note 4 from T-Mobile outright (online preferably), get it carrier unlocked and bring it over to an AT&T MVNO?
I don't see anything listing the difference in bands between the AT&T and T-Mobile variant and I don't see any requirements about needed to stay on a T-Mobile plan for a certain amount of time before unlocking, just that the phone has to be completely paid for. Also I can't seem to find the full price for a T-Mobile Note 4.
Any help is much appreciated! Thanks!
Edit: Sorry I posted this to the wrong forum! Trying to find a way to move/delete it!

I believe the full price is $760.
T-Mobile will only provide the unlock after 2 months consecutive service, so you'll need/want to pay for an online unlock service if you want the code immediately....be sure to make a 5 minute or more call with a t-mobile sim (try to borrow a friends or co-worker) before requesting the unlock code from an online unlock service. That is necessary due to Samsung's region lock, the phone needs to "authenticate" that it is being activated in the correct market....you can google and get a clearer meaning of what I'm talking about.

Hmm it looks like the region "authentication" may be a bit of an issue as I know no one with a T-Mobile sim. Again, I live far away from any T-Mobile service but I am planning a trip to an area they service next month. But even if I was to find a friend with T-Mobile I know nothing about online unlock services. I'm guessing you give them your IMEI number and pay a fee and they give you an available code. Now by the look of the websites I'm seeing, this looks to be a little shady (which I could be ok with) but I don't seem to see any indications of what kind of prices I'd be looking at.
Would you happen to recommend a website in particular or know of the cost? Or is this something XDA doesn't want people posting about? Forgive me if what I'm asking is not allowed.
so get sim for $10 and buy $2 a day prepaid plan.

I used cellunlocker.net to unlock 2 S5's, I think they state it takes up to 12 hours or something, but they had my code in about 22 minutes. I have no experience with other unlock services but there are some that sound horrible, I recommend cellunlocker personally.
I think I paid about $34.99 per device, everything worked without a hitch

What this guy said. You don't need to do two months of service. cellunlocker.net is where you want to go.
Is there a risk of T-Mobile blacklisting your handset if you unlock via a third-party or is that FUD? I just picked up my Note 4 today, I haven't activated service yet. I haven't even popped the SIM in. What would they do if I never did? I just want to pay for it and go back to dirt-cheap prepaid.

@unpocolobo Im an AT&T costumer for my Note 4 on 2 year contract which came out 100$ sold it same day for $700 and got a friend to buy me T-mobile one for $750 plus tax so about $800 so personally i spent $200 on phone and then got unlock code from http://www.cellunlocker.net/ only $30 came in under 20 mins. Also i never used the T-mobile sim on my phone so im guessing there is no region lock on them

They won't blacklist it if u paid it off. They have no reason to
T-Mobile will not blacklist fully paid devices, unless it's reported stolen of course.

[Q] Blacklisted Phone AT&T

Hi guys.
I went through a lot of web sites past couple of months and now I've decided to ask you by myself. I got a present from my GF. Sam Gal S5.
She bought it on a craiglist. She tried it with her AT&T SIM card and it worked. Anyway.. she gave it to me. SIM card denied. I've paid $30 to get a code to unlocked.. Great. Buy what was my surprise. After I got in and made a couple of phone calls to providers I find out that the phone is blacklisted. I tried to get ATT sim card also but doesnt work.
So I started to look for an advice... Ive done root, changed ROM etc. But now... i dont know where else to look.
Obviously it was stolen. But I feel sorry for her and she for me...
Is that just a piece of garbage or is there ANY way to fix it?
I dont even know if im able to ask here.
Any advice or opinions helps.
Thank you
Mike
I think you're kinda screwed...Craigslists scams happen all the time..best bet if your gonna buy a phone on there is to both meet at the AT&T store and go through the whole transfer process.

The official reply from carriers is that once a phone is blacklisted it is impossible to undo. Whether or not it's a limitation of the technology (one-way trip) or if it's just company policy, the output is the same. You and your girlfriend have learned an expensive lesson. You can use it as a wi-fi-only device or a media player, but once a phone is blacklisted it will never be able to connect to a cellular network again.
The reason the phone worked with your girlfriend's SIM card was because the real owner of the phone hadn't called to report the phone stolen yet.

Mike, your situation stinks so bad. I was in a similar spot with a T-Mobile HTC M8, which stopped working after I got it off craigslist and then subsequent IMEI checks shows that it is blocked/blacklisted from T-Mobile's network due to a balance owing from the original purchaser. However, since the phone was not reported stolen, the IMEI is not actually blacklisted/blocked from all carriers, but only T-Mobile. So I bought the SIM unlock code for a few bucks online so that I could unlock the phone for other carrier use. I have tested and verified that my phone works on AT&T, even though it is blocked on T-Mobile. So...you might consider changing your carrier or selling it to someone who can use it on another carrier (with full disclosure to that buyer, of course).

Buying S6 Active Unlocked?

I'm very interested in the S6 Active, but I live in Canada. I am wondering if AT&T sells the phone unlocked if I buy it outright? Actually, would AT&T even sell me the phone if I am not a current customer? If not, does anyone know a way around that?

Yes if you pay full price they'll defiantly sell it to you, pretty sure they'll unlock too since your buying it outright.
I think the Canadian Carriers will get it soon - they Carried the S5 Active. Just wait..

They might get it... but last year, the S5 didn't come out until about October. I'm not sure I'm willing to wait 4 month for the possibility that Canada might get the phone. Hence my questions.
Thanks for the reminder regarding the LTE bands, I'll check to make sure it is compatible
EDIT: Luckily, AT&T and Rogers mostly sure the same LTE bands, so should be fine there
If the phone is paid for in full then AT&T has to grant you an unlock code - you just go to their website and request it. I requested it in the evening and received the code the next morning.

Just make sure you choose that you are not an AT&T customer.

I'm curious if the unlocked version comes without the AT&T boot loader. I have the Moto X, unlocked through AT&T but still cannot remove the boot loader. Can use the phone anywhere that offers the same GSM frequencies though.

S6 Active in UK on Vodafone
Hi, I too am very interested in getting an S6 Active (replace old S4 Active). I'm in the UK, on Vodafone who use LTE 7, 20 [2.6GHz, 800MHz] for 4G I think, which are all in the S6 specs. So if I got an AT&T S6 Active unlocked, anyone care to advise if it should work fine in the UK on Vodafone?
Thanks very much in advance.
I'm getting told a different story...
I've spoken to best buy and all my local Att shops and they all say they will not sell a galaxy s6 active without adding it to an existing Att account or creating a new one. Then they told me that I couldn't get it unlocked until I've had the plan for anywhere from 2-6 months. I can't get a straight story about the delayed unlocking. I have T-Mobile and would LOVE to purchase the phone outright and unlock it and use it right away on T-Mobile. How did you guys buy the phones without having a plan added? Thanks!
Did you use someone else's account?

How did you get them to sell you one without activating it and adding it to a current ATT account or forcing you to sign up for service with them? I called and they said that even if you purchase it outright, they MUST add it/create a new ATT account before you leave. So lame...

The ATT store will not sell it unless you have an account. When I went into best buy they said no problem. Just ask for an S6 active and tell them you want to but it out right. They don't care. If the salesman says you need to have an active line ask for another one. When I brought mine I got a $100 gift card for buying the phone outright, was not expecting it and it was a nice perk.
For unlocking ATT policy, you can find it on their website, states that if you are not an ATT customer and have a phone that is not activated on ATT and is not black listed that they will unlock it for free. I just filled out the form and the next day i had the unlock code. You can Google the policy for exact wording. They will not unlock it in store.

That is great, now... can you pleae report how well the S6 active from AT&T works on the T-mobile network? How are the LTE speeds? and the 3g as well.. as I think it misses some of Tmobiles bands. How is the calling quality on T-mobile and reception? Does it have the new band 12 compatible with the new Tmobile band 12? Do you know if it they have root access already? and of course... what about wifi calling? I am assuming this feature does not work with this phone. We appreciate answers to those questions.

There is no WiFi calling option as this is exclusive to t-mobile. I am keeping an old phone tmobile around for when I travel international and use WiFi calling.

So far...very frustrating

That is great, now... can you pleae report how well the S6 active from AT&T works on the T-mobile network? How are the LTE speeds? and the 3g as well.. as I think it misses some of T mobiles bands. How is the calling quality on T-mobile and reception? Does it have the new band 12 compatible with the new Tmobile band 12? Do you know if it they have root access already? and of course... what about wifi calling? I am assuming this feature does not work with this phone. We appreciate answers to those questions.

Received the unlock code and it worked like a charm, however everything else has been an issue. T-mobile set me up with a sim card and activated it and I can make calls fine, but the data is TERRIBLY slow. As in, I used to get 10mbps easily all around Charlotte (my home city) but now I'm getting MAYBE .88mbps. Also, the top where it says "lte" keeps disappearing and just showing the bars and the data cuts off completely. I'll make a call, and then after I hang up, the symbol comes back for a little while. I've reset the APN settings, done them manually with some info I found online, but it's still an issue. If anyone could help me, that'd be amazing.
Also, not software related, the actual screen has an issue. It's not the worst thing ever, but in direct sunlight there is a box around the screen about .25 inches in from the edge. It's almost like the glue they used to attach the glass to the screen isn't clear, but nearly clear. It shows up best on a white background with direct sunlight and the back-light turned up all the way, but it's visible on everything but black. VERY annoying.
I'm going to keep working with it (have factory reset twice now) for a couple of hours, but if it doesn't get figured out I have to return it. I use the phone for work and I literally cannot be without a stable connection.

I called T-mobile and they had me manually enter 2 different sets of settings to try and get it to work, and the 2nd set was stable but wasn't fast. Then she pushed my device some settings (didn't know they could do that) and I installed them when prompted. That's the settings I'm using now. The connection is stable, but speeds are not like what they were (coming from an S5 so missing band 12 isn't the issue I unless I'm mistaken). Thank you so much for your help.
Here are the screenshots. My old phone used "fast.tmobile.com" but this one uses epc.tmobile.com. Not sure what the difference is. http://imgur.com/a/5pddQ

T-Mobile Device Unlock App Says Not Recognized by Service Provider

I had to send my phone into LG for repair. I am a Prepaid T-Mobile customer. Since I got the phone back, whenever I try to open the app to check on Permanent Unlock (as I have done temp in the past), the app get this error when Connecting to NetworkL:
Device not recognized by your service provider. Please call customer care.
Well, I tried using chat service on their website and all that resulted in was the person thinking they should send in an unlock request for me. I knew this was wrong. Next day I get an email from the unlock dept telling me to use the app
Since I figure people here tend to be smarter than a telco tech support person, I would ask here before pursuing this further with Tmo.
This is in fact the same phone I sent in...I checked the IMEI, etc. Using the same tmo sim card.
Any ideas?
Thanks
I have gone through this with T-Mobile and LG. Because you are prepaid there is no account for you at T-Mobile. According to them, the new rules are: you must be active (have an account), have either spent $100 on your account or have purchased $100 to be used on your account, and be active for 40 days. So you could borrow someone else's sim card that is in good standing, post paid, older than 40 days, and has had $100 spent or is in the account. YES, this is extortion at it's finest! The only other way would be to find a verified seller that has a money back guarantee, who is willing to unlock your phone for a fee. The cheapest legit one I saw on the internet was about $55. NOW, you can use MetroPCS, T-Mobile, and Simple Mobile sim cards without unlocking your phone because Metro and Simple are MVNO's (subsidiary carriers that use T-Mobile towers. You CAN'T use AT&T, Verizon, etc. BUT you can't switch from T-Mobile to Simple Mobile. You can switch from T-Mobile or Simple Mobile to MetroPCS. I did it.

Hmm. I am sadly aware of tmo's FU to prepaid customers needing service, as I have experienced it as well.
But, before I sent it in this app did recognize my phone and would allow me to temp unlock. It is only since it came back from LG repair that it stopped working. This was a period of maybe 10 days.
One item I question, but imagine it is nothing is that under the battery next to the original label with IMEI, model, seriel, etc , they place another label that has a barcode with the imei numbers next to that LB (Leather Back). Above that is shows HB811LB, but then after that BT01 EU.
No idea what that was about but EU made me think Europe.
I am interested to know if and/or how you got this resolved. I am suffering the exact same issue with a T-Mobile LG V10 after sending it in for repair.
Same thing with me, i was able to get the prompt to temp or perm unlock before i sent my g4 off to LG. Phone came back same IMEI on sticker and on device after dialing *#06# I get the stupid message device not recognized by your service provider. Please contact customer care. I tried reinstalling the firmware, same firmware that was in there, didn't want to brick the phone again.... still nothing.
I had the same issue and Tech support ended up sending me a new device. I purchased a phone and it ended up failing during a software update and wouldn't boot. Had to send it into LG for repair. Got it back andnit wouldn't unlock with the same error. Tech Support had sent me a replacement device brand new not refurbished after about 2 phone calls complaining about it not recognizing my device in the unlock app.

Maybe I should call them again. Last time I tried they basically said FU to me. They repaired it and that was that. Frankly, the only thing keeping me with these TMO arses is that I have a super cheap prepaid plan they no longer offer.
Of course my concern with them replacing the phone is that the replacement could have any of the other various issues that this LG quality control clusterF*** has.
Thinking along the lines of it being my last LG product instead. Maybe even sell it now before the flood and use my little LG Leon backup phone I bought when I initially sent this one in for service. And Maybe tell TMO FOOO too.
Whatever LG is doing when they are flashing phones back to stock after them being bricked, is really messing up the phones. I sent out another one and the IMEI is clear fully paid off and the device unlock app is pulling the same ****. I'm not impressed. T-mobile won't unlock the phone either because i'm not the original owner. There is no block what so ever on the phone. PURE B.S on T-mobile and LG's part.
On the phone with LG now. So far getting the same run-around. He is actually calling TMO support because he simply won't believe they can't fix it.
If I don't get a replacement, I may be selling this phone, done with LG for good and ordering a Moto X Pure or something
I don't mind a screw up by a company, but you best stand behind your product properly or foo you and your company, IMO.
Results of call.....Total Failure. The LG person pawns me off on a TMO person who asks for my number so they can call back. Instead, they just transferred me to a TMO support idiot who had no idea whatsoever about what was going on. Really sick of both these company's Bull****. Pretty sure this is my last LG product ever.
Decided to try again using Chat.
So annoyed with LG and TMO right now I may sell the phone and buy a Nexus 6p and Foo to all LG products in the future.
I think it has to do with LG's firmware they install. Can't see what else it can be. After installing the stock 10n firmware still getting the same error. Not sure what i can do, most likely i'll be selling the phone on swappa.

Agreed. Something they are doing when they flash their firmware is causing the problem. It is NOT T-Mobile (albeit their quality of service for prepaid customers sucks ass
And that is fine if they fix the issue. Now they are just being ****tards and I have about had it.
All I can say is that after the quality control debacle of the G4, you'd have to be a fool to buy a G5. I know I won't

The more i speak to t-mobile the more i hate them, who puts an unlock app on a phone? In Canada we buy a phone same day get an unlock code and call it a day. I'm sure people will be leaving t-mobile to go elsewhere.

It's because that crazy ass John Legarde is a jerkoff and this is their way of screwing over customers on Sim Unlocking. They actually put something in there that disallows the normal way of sim unlocking, if you put CM on your phone that will prompt for an unlock code (I bought one cheap).
T-Mobile is just simply an ASSHOLE company run by a human freak of nature

I also heard that you cant root it put in the international rom, put in a foreign sim and it asks for an unlock code. After that the phone says unlocked but it actually isn't. I wish i knew for about development i'd tear one of the 2 phones apart and try to fet the partition that allows us to bypass the unlock.

Hah. Well, I am just trying to have it work being totally legit. It has nothing to do with rooting and romming, that much know as the problem existed right out of the box from them. Also, before the repair, the app work 100% rooted or not.
duplicate. my bad.
I always wonder why that button says Edit/Delete, but you can never delete them.
Well, I just ordered a Nexus 6p with Project Fi. If I like it I will port my tmo number to it and be done with LG....since fi uses tmo, I will simply be done dealing with them directly.
Not sure I see any downsides to this
Hah, decided to make one last attempt with LG tech support, this time via email. Besides explaining to them why their initial reply was wrong, I also told them I have pretty much given up on future LG purchases and that I have a nexus 6p on the way to replace this phone. Just got another reply and supposedly he is kicking it up to his manager. We will see what happens, but I am not raising my expectations. Nothing says I can't cancel the nexus 6p.
