Serious battery drain after 4.4.2 - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI all,
After updating to 4.4.2, I have serious battery drain. I did a full wipe and still the same. I did a factory reset as well. My battery would only last 5-7 hours on the average without constant use. Tried installing custom and stock kernel but still the same issue. Im on firmware 4.19, viper 5.0 if that would help. Appreciate any response.

We need more information
Install betterbatterystats or Wakelock Detector.
Charge your phone to 100%
Use your phone "as you normally would"
After the phone has been on for an hour or two, sends us your wakelocks for all screens

Hi, thanks for a response. I just did another reformat and complete 1 cycle, everything seems to be fine now.
Currently my average is around 18 hours. Used 40% in 11 hours with more than 2 hours screen time and wifi /data always on.

Dev Edition -> GPE also serious battery drain
Hi,
I'm not the OP but I have the same problem, significantly worse battery life after converting my Developer Edition to Google Play Edition.
For conversion I used the pre-rooted RUU available in this thread. The only issue that I encountered was having to use firewater instead of rumrunner or moonshine to get s-off.
I used Titanium Backup to restore apps+data (I did not restore system apps/data).
Pre-conversion my battery would last 18-22 hours on average with rooted stock 4.4.2/HTC Sense 5.5, about 16-18 hours on Cyanogenmod 11.
Post-conversion battery life is 5-7 hours, often connected to WiFi with very low screen usage. Phone is consistently warmer than before conversion.
I've disabled Google Now, set Location Mode to "Battery" and turned off Google Location Reporting.
I've attached screenshots from Wakelock Detector and GSAM. (I can also post additional screenshots/details if needed). Additional stats for top-listed usage apps/services from GSAM:
GSAM Kernel Wakelocks---> (#1) Combined App Wakelocks: 21m; (#2) msm_hsic_host: 12m; (#3) wlan_ctrl_wake: 7m

GSAM App Details--->Google Play Services: CPU Usage 1m, Keep Awake 1m, Wakelocks 1508, Num. Times Waking Device 309
GSAM Phone Radio--->Signal Strength: Medium 72%, High 24%, Low 4%, Scanning for Signal: 8m
GSAM Screen On---> Screen On: 12m, Discharge While On/Off: 17%/68%, Screen Brightness % Time: Dark 11%, Medium 6%, Light 28%, Bright 55%
Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Sure, I'll revert to stock if I have to do so. I was hoping to solve this problem and stick with GPE if I can.

GPE Roms don't have battery life thats as good I find (despite phone sites saying it lasts longer). It shouldnt be as bad as it is for you though. Only wakelocks I can see are from Google Play Services and a few from facebook and your weather app.
I find betterbatterystats better than wakelock. Personal preference

Hey guys, I too have a problem with battery drain
Have the One now since short before Christmas and began with Viper ROM 3.5, then an update to 4.1 and further to 4.2 and 4.3 both via OTA, then i had random reboots and it was just for half a minute till it began a reboot again. Then fresh install with full wipe and flashing full ROM 4.3, then again after 3 days random reboot where it doesnt go past the bootscreen till i did a full wipe again
Then update to 5.0.0, and ever since then the phone is sort of over clocked, on a sense ROM 2 of the cores run on at least 1134MHz if its on idle, if i do sth all 4 cores run on 1134 and over (mostly 1728MHz). On an AOSP ROM 2 cores are on 1026MHz on idle and no gapps installed
Also on viper ROM it was that even though it was connected to the charger it discharged to 0% over night.
So, any suggestions what it could have and how it could be fixed?
Or should i send it in? (Also i am just dev unlocked and s-on, is that maybe a problem when i send it in?)

Battery Drains during Standby Mode

Does anybody experience a 3% to 5% battery drain just a few minutes after charging the battery to 100%? It has already reached 100% so I already unplugged it from the charger, but then I noticed after a few minutes, it went down to 97% already, and then in 10 minutes, it's already down to 96%. In 3 hours, it's down to 84%; in 7 hours, it's down to 38% and that's just on standby mode with Wifi/Bluetooth OFF, 3G OFF, GSM only. I've been experiencing this problem for the past few days now. I've already conditioned my battery, charging it to a full charge (100%) after draining the battery until it shuts the phone off. I only charge the battery while the phone is off and usually it takes about 3 to 4 hours maximum to charge it to 100%.
The longest time it reached was 12 hours (battery unplugged from charger) and that is with light use, such as Wifi is only on for a couple of hours, so basically just 2 hours web browsing and skype, 10-20 text messages and 30 minutes to 1 hour browsing the photo gallery or watching videos. No phone calls and 3G is off. The rest of the day, the phone is just on standby mode. I only have at most 10 widgets on the home screen. I have Avast Antivirus running in the background.
I am currently using Easy Battery Saver, Easy Task Killer, GO Task Manager and Battery Monitor Widget. I've uninstalled Juice Defender since I don't think it helps that much when it comes to the battery drain. Currently, the power saving option (available on Note) is enabled at 50%.

Any feedback or comment on this matter would be really much appreciated. Thanks!
From a personal standpoint. Your screenshots shows that your phone had never ever done a deep sleep at all. the 'Awake' mode is continously consistent as well. I guess the probable reason for that is you've installed ''Avast AV" on your phone. It's always running in the background (whenever the phone is ON). From my experiences, Any background application running would always cause wakelocks and the phone would never enter into deep sleep at all.
How bout you try uninstalling some of the background apps your using esp. Avast AV and give it a day to observe if your still having that battery drain issue. (Don't forget after uninstalling or removing those apps, try to wipe dalvik cache and battery stat and restart your phone after.)
and Oh by the way, I am using Juice Defender and contrary to your saying it doesn't help.. IT DOES HELP save battery as I my Note is able to reach 1.5- 2 days of normal use.
Cheers!
Yeah and download betterbatterystats and do some searching on it. With it you can discover what is causing those wakelocks. Search the web for more info on your wakelocks.

I'm using avast and never seen a drain like that. Only time I have is because of background processing. First thing I would do is turn off Background Data
Then as others have said - check batterystats to see where wakelocks are
Plus a rooted phone is a good thing. Titanium backup allowed me to freeze wi-fi sharing which also made a big difference
Finally - clear all caches from Applications menu and reboot

Only picture that shows that is the one with 1 minute 56 sec discharging time, so it was taken shortly after taking charger out. No suprise of it being almost 100% screen on time there if its only 2 minutes
Also installing "cpu spy" will give the cumulative time that your cpu spent at each frequency including deep sleep , mine is showing 88%
John.
Anti virus app is battery hog, I had avast before too, and I uninstalled it after 2 days using. Also that Juice defender, from my test before, it use up more battery than it saved. turning on and off those 3G/Wifi thing is using up alot of battery. and you know what? even the betterbatterystats use up alot, at least to me, becoz it scan what is up frequently.
Hello! Thank you all so much for your response. I've installed both BetterBatteryStats and CPU Spy and here are the results (please see attachments). Upon checking CPU Spy, it shows there that phone did went to deep sleep, maybe? I'm not quite sure, but it shows on the screenshot that it went to deep sleep for 19%. So does that mean the phone really went to sleep?? I'm sorry to ask this question, since I've never really encountered this problem before with my previous Samsung Wave phone, how will you know that your phone went straight to deep sleep mode?
Also, after 46 minutes or so, the battery went down to 96% already after charging it. The battery drain was already 4% in less than an hour.
@letters_to_cleo: I have not uninstalled Avast yet, since I'm still hesitant to use my phone without an AV. But I will try your suggestion for 1 day and see if there's any battery improvement.
I'm looking forward to your response or suggestions. Thanks again!
i am having problem too with new battery original samsung ( made in japan, finished in korea) previously i use samsung battery made in china, finished in korea. charged it over night with power off. it only last 13hrs. my wife phone can last 30hrs.
i've used batterymix to check the battery usage graph, the usage graph drop very fast compare to my wife phone. i'll post some screen capture of the graphs.
another issue is i used once wifi sharing. after turning switching the wifi sharing off, the wifi sharing service always at the background even after many reboot. how to turn that off??
You might need a new battery. Any rechargeable battery has a finite charging cycle. Just a suggestion.
Hi, all! I just noticed that the battery drains still even during deep sleep mode. After 3 hours or so (during sleep mode according to CPU Spy), the battery went down to 92%. It drains even faster when the phone is in use, especially when Wifi and Bluetooth are on, maybe 2-5% drain in 1 hour.
Maybe there's something wrong with the battery?? It's still a new battery and I can see some improvement each day though, but that's because I use it less each day. Before the battery can only last for 8-10 hours, then it increased to 12 hours, and then to 16-17 hours. BetterBatteryStats' current estimate to empty is 24 hours as of today, but that's because I only used the phone today for only a couple of hours, with 20 minutes Wifi and Bluetooth ON and most of the time, it's on deep sleep mode according to CPU Spy.
What do I do with the results from the Partial Wakelocks? Do I have to disable those apps?? The Kernel Wakelocks didn't show any reference apps running. The screenshots for the Partial and Kernel Wakelocks that were taken a few hours earlier still show the same results after 3 hours.

That would be really bad luck. I got my Note via preorder in Germany at the first day it was sold and since then I charged it everyday, sometimes even twice and there is no difference to the first day. If I get told by Samsung after 6month of normal usage the battery is dead that would be the last Samsung device I bought and I use a lot of Samsung stuff.
@ebichan24
Your last screenshots show between 9:35 and 13:35 5% of battery drain. That's not really a good value but ways lower than before. Did you delete some Apps or what did you change?
And since when occurred this issue? Did you install new Apps before this happened?
On my Note I had this issue sometimes without any changes but it was gone after a reboot.

Agreed with Kanalcommander.... try a reboot in the first instance.
Others have also noted that it takes a few refresh cycles before the phone more accurately reports battery use. Perhaps what you are reporting is because the phone and battery are new (new ROM or Kernel loaded?)
What I have done in the past is to reboot into CWM recovery then clear the battery stats (in the Advanced menu option) Recharge the battery to 100% until it says to remove charger and then use normally until battery down to around 20%, then recharge the battery to 100% again. Do this over a few days and that may help.
thanks, it is new battery two days old.

I was having similar problems with my new note and finishing full charge in 12 hrs but fixed some things and my last charge gave me 2d6hr seriously..few things i did were stop using live wallpapers! Get badass battery to thoroughly monitor stats and then use zdbox to extend life even much eg. I put phone to auto flymode using that app when its sleeping time rest i am more than satisfied even if on GB LC1 fw..waiting for official premium suite for ics since i recently upgraded from sgs2 using ics i miss that smoothness and much better bat life.. Let me know if can be helpful.. Good luck

That's what I'm currently doing right now, well, actually, what I do is I discharge the battery until it reaches 0% and turns the phone off. And then I charge the phone for 3 hours while it's switched off, I turn it back on again to check if the battery is fully charged and then I unplug it from the charger.
@Kanalcommander
**Did you delete some Apps or what did you change?
I haven't deleted any apps yet since I don't know which app/s to delete. Most of the apps I downloaded in Note were the same apps that I used in my iPhone4 and Samsung phone before.
**And since when occurred this issue?
This issue occurred since the first day I bought the phone, which was a couple of weeks ago. How long does it take to condition a new battery and new phone?? I'm sorry if I have to ask this question, it's just because I never really experienced this problem with my previous smartphones.
**Did you install new Apps before this happened? On my Note I had this issue sometimes without any changes but it was gone after a reboot.
I only installed recently CPU Spy and BetterBatteryStats and that's it. The drain of 5% from 9:35 to 13:35, the phone's just on deep sleep mode. And then from 13:35 to 23:44, it went from 92% to 74% while the phone is on deep sleep mode at 90% according to CPU Spy. That's 18% battery drain. It's just an unacceptable number for me. I tried rebooting the phone already, but every time I do so, just a few minutes after I turned the phone ON, there's already a 1% drain in the battery.
Also, does the battery really drain faster when the Wifi is ON? I've read in other threads that there might be some problem with the recent OS update that Samsung needs to address. Is this true?? Because as you can see on the screenshot below, the battery was still at 74% by 23:44 and then after I turned ON the Wifi and used it until 01:26, the battery went down to 54%. That's already a 20% battery drain in just less than 2 hours. I was only browsing through the Android Store and Skype.
Calibrate your battery in case you flashed any roms and for first usage I got my battery to 0% 3 times then everything is running great for example its at 47% now its 22 now and I have had it off charge since 7 morning..... i have wifi gps and 3g always on and use music player bluetooth and made some calls

My battery (also only a week old) drains quickly too. Can anyone tell me if widgets draw a lot of current? And then is it only the ones on the visible screen or do all widgets draw juice all the time?
I will ask such thing, did you guys check the battery expiration day ? Mostly sibce you got your phone almost a yeae after it was announced you nay get a bad battery, as for widgets the ones that are always active and asking for informatiom. Like location or weather over the internet yes they do eat your battery kinda fast.

Recurring battery drain? - Caused by memory of using app to drain battery?
Hello!
I used a battery drain app when charge left was 30% to accelerate drain to "die out" stage. After I completed the calibration process for unrooted phone as suggested in various sites (charge fully, switch off and charge etc.) I started using it from a 100% stage.
This afternoon when the battery showed 30% I saw in BMW the current flow was in -10ma to -15ma and it started spiking to hundreds. There was no change in settings or usage. From the 30% level it dropped to 10% in an hour and I had to charge again.
Was puzzled why the battery which was dropping around 0.5%/hour in standby earlier to the 30% level suddenly went down hill. My first guess was it was possible some file in the system remembered the previous usage history and replayed it out.
Any suggestions? Anyone faced this before? Everyone says LiOn batteries dont have memory so if anything it has to be the phone.
Thanks!

Xperia SP battery issue?

Hi
I think I might have an issue with the battery on an xperia sp which I got a few days ago. When idle with stamina on it's loosing between 1-2% per hour. I've used Gsam and recorded some stats to show what's using up the battery when the phone is not in use. Hope it makes some sense
loosing ~2% per hour phone in idle screen off
Stamina on, GSM only
Tried airplane, not much difference
Tried Stamina off, no difference
Charged to 95%
61% @ 10:16PM
34% battery use - of that
screen 56.3% (1hr 47min)
phone radio 6.5%
wifi 3.7%
apps 33.3%
TOTAL DRAIN ON BATTERY
-------------------
19% screen (avg 0.18% per minute)
2% phone radio
1.2% wifi
11% apps
____________________________________________
13 HOURS IDLE LATER - 17-20% BATTERY GONE
____________________________________________
44% @ 11.04AM(QUICKLY DROPPED TO 41% in around 2
minutes)
51% battery use - of that
screen 49.8% (1hr 48min)
radio 13.1%
wifi 7.4%
apps 29.6%
TOTAL DRAIN ON BATTERY
-------------------
screen 25.4% (WHY THE INCREASE of 6.4% when OFF all the time?)
radio 6.6% (+4.6%)
wifi 3.78% (+2.58%)
apps 14.8% (+3.4%, not sure why, stamina turns off all apps?)
6.4 + 4.6 + 2.6 + 3.4 = 17%
Why are these using up so much power in idle with stamina mode on?
Hello,
remove your simcard, reboot, got in to flightmode and let Wifi enabled.
now let phone unused for 8hours. its all Ok then accu should drain only 0,05%/h.
This is my XSP which i use only as alarmclock an every day 1 hour as Musicplayer.
I have tried without the sim card but it didn't do anything.
I notice in your screenshot though that there is no connection to 'mobilfunknetzsignal' ... mine is there even when the sim card is out, how did you get rid of it?

You must enable the flightmode under "settings->network->more" .
and then please install BetterBatteryStats to see if you have wakelocks and your device go in to deepsleep after turn of the screen.

Ah yes.. I tried flight mode one night and it still lost 15%
I have also used wakelock detector and it says phone is in deep sleep 99 percent of the time but still the battery is draining 1-2% per hour
Right now the battery is 27% down from 44% 2 hours ago... and I have hardly used it. I'll recharge and try again without turning screen on at all and see whats using it up.
Is there any explanation why the screen used 6.4% of the battery overnight when it was off all the time?
I'm too having about same problem..and am really interested in answer/solution,,,
Please, anyone?
I think I have fixed it but not sure. Phone was charged 24 hours ago to 99%, now its 94%. Definitely not using alot of power with stamina mode now but the screen was only used for 5-10 minutes, I've yet to test if it acts the same after screen has been used for a long time before going idle.
What I did was run phone setup again and update all apps
Now 88% after 40 hours, screen on for 25 minutes. Xperias battery monitor and gsam show completely different usage, android system takes up the majority in the xperia one but only 10% in gsam (under apps)
I checked wakelock detector and something called 'syncloopwakelock' was on for 4 and half hours. Is there any way to disable this? I already have auto sync in settings turned off.
A phone is meant to be used. Using it only from time to time to have as much standby time as possible is just a waste of a good phone.
I can get two days with heavy use. A lot of music, whatsapp, facebook and XDA Premium app..

I know, but there was a clear issue before as the battery was draining 20 percent overnight reducing the time I can actually use it. I was getting 5 hours screen on time one day, and only 2 hours the next. Just trying to make sure it has stopped, seems like it has
Would like to solve this syncloop thing though. I have no interest in syncing any accounts as I don't use them.
Simple fix
Change your rom, stock rom eats so much battery and has so many bloats, apps keep running in the background all sony apps.
MIUI is on jellybean and it gives me average of 1 day 20hours on normal use with wifi always on and sim card inserted..texting call and stuff
Problem has returned, woke up today to find battery under 50% and it was at least 75% when I went to sleep. Wakelock detector doesn't show anything and says phone was asleep all the time. Sony's battery graph though shows the phone was awake most of the time, but I can't find the cause in GSam or wakelock detector.
i think i have a idea. it can come from WiFi. there is a bug in all android 4.1. Set Wifi to allways on and deactivate/delete LocationBasedWiFi app from sony.
you can found it with BetterBatteryStats under Process.
Some screenshots
in this screenshoots the problem is not shown. When it comes from WiFi driver it is not a app that drain the accu, but a process.
The Line with awake in history details you can ignore, its buggy in 4.1.
I have searched through everything in Wakelock Detector and only process I found with alot of time is syncloopwakelock which is 4.5 hours. But this was already about 4 hours when battery was 85%
If I buy BetterBatteryStats will this show the problem? As you an see it drained at slow rate for 2 days then suddenly started dropping faster yesterday. I made no changes to Wifi settings, it is always on ... and I use Stamina mode.
Yes BBS will show the problem as "wifistatemachine", if the error should really be come from. you must not buy it, search on XDA for apk.
but if it come from your syncloopwakelock then i can not help.
Holy crap
I charged the phone to 96%, used it for 30 min (down to 92 percent) then went to sleep. Woke up and it was 28% and kept dropping !!! I've checked BBS, Gsam and I can't find the cause... again. After uploading these SS its at 12 percent.

[Q] pm8921_eoc is keeping my phone awake! Help!

Hi guys, I am using stock Rogers Moto X and just upgraded to Kitkat. While enjoying the improved response time on Kitkat, I noticed that the standby time(everything off except radio signal) on this phone consumed more juice than on Jellybean. When running on JB, it used to consume about 5% every 10 hours with wakeup time less than 3% showing on Wakeuplock. However, it now consumes about 5% for every 6-7 hours!!
Therefore, I downloaded Wakeuplock, GSam battery monitor, and Betterbattery stats to collect some info. Although their functionality are very much limited under Kitkat, they still can collect kernel wakelocks info except Wakeuplock. The results were collected after I charged my phone to 86% and turning off everything except radio. Time period was 7 hours and 15 mins. See my results on attachments.
You can see that on Betterbattery stats it shows everything was alright. Deep sleep time was 99.3% and awake time was 0.7%. Deep sleep time was very satisfactory. While on the Wakeuplock, it showed awake time was 26%! Although I think it did not reset the time to 0 after I unplug my charger so it probably not that accurate but should be at least 15% of awake time. It also cannot display anymore details under Kitkat. Last but not least, on GSam battery monitor, the result shows pm8921_eoc was keeping the phone awake for 1 hour and 4 min for the duration of 7 hours and 31 min which makes 14% of awake time alone. I have never seen pm8921_eoc this high on my kernel wakelocks. I did not download any new apps(except these wakelock apps) or change any setting to my apps after the Kitkat update so it shouldn't be my apps that causing it.
So what is pm8921_eoc exactly? And how should I reduce its waking up times?

Thank you so much! Guess it's just Kitkat draining more battery.

Its not that bad compared to 4.4 Anne it always takes a few cycles to see how your battery actual is

You're getting less than 1 percent per hour drain....that's better than most. There's no issue. Be thankful.

I need help to minimise battery drain when not in use

Hi everyone,
The battery drain on my phone is atrocious, and I'm thinking it's a software related issue rather than hardware (phones aren't really my area, so this thinking isn't based on much). Now I don't use my phone much, and when in standby pretty much all of the toggles are turned off (no wifi, data, bluetooth, NFC). Yet even so, if I charge my phone and then unplug it before going to sleep, in the morning I'll only have 20-50% charge left. This is the most common outcome, though once or twice this drain hasn't happened and I've had 2 or 3 solid days of use.
As mentioned phones aren't really my area, but I've installed several apps (Doze, Gsam, Wakelock detector) and tried to lock everything down when not in use, without results.
I'm using Cyanogenmod 13.0-20160908, and Nova Launcher. I've got screenshots from Gsam, but not sure how to add them here (or where to upload them to link to them). Some of the details include (after being charged then not used till I took the screenshots):
Used 77% in 21h 9m (3.6%/h - 13h 54m Active)
Phone 0%
Screen 00:13:49 2%
Phone Radio 21:09:31 7%
Wifi Active 21:09:31 2%
Held Awake 13:40:30 12%
App Usage 76%
Then from App Usage breakdown:
Kernel (Android OS) 25.7% --> CPU Usage (Background Only) 2h 36m, Keep Awake 13h 35m
CyanogenMod System 20.6% --> CPU Usage (Background Only) 2h 5m, Keep Awake 26s, No of Wake Locks 233, No of times waking device 40
Phone Services 17.7% --> CPU Usage (Background Only) 1h 47m, Keep Awake 3m, No of Wake Locks 11107 --> Wakelock Detail: RILJ 3.6m (9884), ServiceStateTracker 15.5s (1223).
Let me know what details would be useful, and thanks in advance for any help. If flashing another rom or back to miui would be likely to fix things I'll do it. I have a few other minor niggles, but if this can be fixed I'd appreciate it.

Terrible battery drain cause by "video2" kernel wakelock

I'm hoping someone can assist me. I can't seem to find much information regarding the "video2" kernel wakelock.
I just charged my phone to 100% over night. I have only used it for about 19 minutes and the battery is at 75%.
I am rooted, on the latest OOS - stock; running xposed and magisk (latest versions)
I have forcedoze and leandroid running and I also use wakeblock to limit some wakelocks.
I use an app called WLD (Wakelock Detector) - to show me what wakelocks are being used and I see one in particular that is "video2". What could this be?
video2 shows 3h 28m x1244 in WLD
PowerManagerService.WakeLocks shows 6m 20s x407
All the other kernel wakelocks are under 1m
leandroid should be turning off my network settings when the screen is off, and only turning it on hourly for 60 seconds to get the occassional notifications if there are any and then turn off again.
I am normally connected to WiFi and my location services (GPS) is turned on as well, but as I mentioned, when it's not in use leandroid should be powering them off.
I'm trying to figure out what is using up over 25% of my battery only after 19 mins of use. When I go into settings to look at the battery I see the following:
Screen Usage since full charge - 19m
Android system - 4%
Phone Idle - 2%
Android OS - 2%
Cell standby - 1%
Screen 1%

Thanks for the response, I exported all the logs from BBS. I ended up charging my phone to 100% again and then just left it doze for a bit and once again it eats through the battery idle.
I hope these logs help.
I am uploading screenshots from my phones battery and the BBS screens.
I have left my phone idle since yesterday. SOT is only 3 mins and I'm down to 61%. I would really appreciate any help I can get.
Well, I assume for those who had a look over this thread, you were as baffled by this issue as I initially was.
After a lot of trial and error, I believe I resolved my issue. To help others (in case other users run into a similar issue as I), I will write up a detailed summary of what I did to fix the issue and the apps I used. For now a quick summary.
I would like to bring up an interesting fact, and I'm not sure if my scenario is just an anomaly, but it turned out that the reason I was having this issue is because of having "doze mode" enabled in the developer menu. Apparently this setting conflicted with the battery saving apps I run such as forcedoze and leandroid.
If you use custom apps to save battery, make sure you disable force doze on your OP3T. I did a few other changes on my phone, but after disabling this option, I saw an immediate difference in my phone battery when it was idle and screen off. I only lost 1% battery in about 5 hours, whereas before it seemed less than 1 hour.
