[Q] Upgrading Antique Version of Droid - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Nook HD 7". Although it's brand-new, it's running Droid v2.2.0. I'd like to upgrade it to something a lot more current. However, I'm not a technical IT person, though I am a 30-year user of IT, PCs, etc. In fact, I make my living on a computer. I don't know if the folks who man the 'Nook Section' at a B&N Store help people like me, but would I be better offf asking the Nook person there to help me upgrade to Droid v4.X vs. trying to wade through some highly technical--but I'm sure point-on--directions from this Forum?
Thanks very much.

Thank you. I read that before I made my initial post. Here is what I propose: if you will e-mail me off-line ([email protected]), I'd like to set up a time to talk briefly w/you by telephone. I will then commit to pay you to help me do what I read before I posted. Is that acceptable?

No, I am not interested in that. If you need specific help with an item in the thread, I will try to help.
Maybe someone else is interested.
Edit: And stock B&N software is not antique Droid 2.2.0 (Droid is a model of phone by Motorola). It is Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It has been heavily modified by B&N and given their version number 2.2.0.The latest version of Android is an experimental Android 4.4 (KitKat).

Your point about Droid vs. Android is well-taken. I apologize. Good to know about KitKat. Thank you for that.
FWIW, I have seen Nook models on the web that claim to be running Android v4.X. That is what led me to the CM site first. I followed the instruction there to the letter and downloaded the requisite file--OneClick.apk. However, when I tried to install it, the Nook gave me this message: "This Nook cannot read this file. It may be an unsupported format." That's when I came here.
So now I'm scratching my head. I need expert help and am willing and able to pay for it. If anyone is interested in helping me, please either post your contact information or e-mail me directly at: [email protected]. - Warren Miller, CPA - Lexington, Virginia.

I don't know what that oneclick.apk is, but it has nothing to do with installing CM on a Nook HD/HD+. Follow the dummies guide I referenced earlier.
EDIT: If you can't or don't want to put the effort into updating the device yourself, you can go to a commercial site like N2Acards.com and they will sell you a ready made SD with Android for Nook already set up for you.

[Q] Honeybunches thread

What happened to the honeybunches thread? What was the reason it was deleted??
OP requested that his thread be deleted.
Huh okay, thanks.
Was a reason given? Is he working on a newer version? I donated money and although I understand that a donation is giving someone money without precondition, an explanation would be the polite thing to do.

You donated money to someone for a small tweak on the Honeycomb SDK port that deeper-blue had created... Your loss.
Not really, I appreciated his work. And since I cannot contribute to the community with expertise, I choose to do so with money since I am generally a fan of the work put out by others on this board. Trust me, if blue had a donate link I would be one of the first to kick in some cash. But he hasn't and despite being a "minor tweak" the build was still quite good.
I DENIED ALL DONATIONS... NO MONEY WAS TAKEN. I didnt want any legal issues with google. I saw in deepers q&a about the market.

All is good Marcusant! Your work was/is very much appreciated and I look forward to seeing what you do with this in the future. Maybe an EMMC build in coordination with DB? hehe

Not a problem, I apologize if I stepped on your privacy.
He deleted his post because it was becoming quite apparent that he was blatantly copying someone else's work. Taking a "picture" (diskimage) of a working version of someone else's work with a couple of apks added to it does not make it "your custom rom". He had no business giving advice on technicalities of Honeycomb that he had no understanding of, and it's no wonder that Blue wouldn't give this kid the time of day and "work together" on future builds...I'm really surprised no one called him on it earlier than now...
I do believe the reason for the OP deleting was merely the fact that you aren't meant to include GApps (Market, Gmail, Maps etc..) inside ROMS or devices that aren't licensed by Google. That's why you don't see cheap Android tablets with the Android Market on - Google hasn't licensed them too. Same applies to ROMS.
Actually Marcusant wasn't just adding "a few apks." He tweaked DB's release to make an image that would fit a 2gb card for those that didn't have access to bigger cards.
Yep--makes it even shadier-- Here is his math, in base form:
(Deep Blue's build) + (Google's Gapps) + (LauncherPro) = ("MY CUSTOM ROM" WOOT?)
It was wrong on every level.
Zeroing out space and using a partition tool still leaves you with someone elses exact work underneath. Not an excuse. Fine (IMO) to post as a image of DB's build, but NOT as 'my custom rom'. Anyone else agree?

Do you think that Google would sue the guy over a rom on his nook color he was using for personal use? I don't. I could see it if he was selling the rom or selling nooks he rooted and put the market on. If Google were going to sue it probably would have started a long time ago with all of the devices that have been rooted and the market was put on. Or it would have started when the nc was first rooted and the market was put on it.
Why would they sue? As long as people are using it like they should then google is just MAKING MORE MONEY by us having the market on another device to buy apps with.
Marcusant did google ask you to take your thread down?
Just to clarify, deeper-blue was fine with my work...

By your assessment, Deep Blue is just copying someone else's work too (i.e. Google). I thought the point of this forum is for people to find ways of making our devices work better, or making it easier to make our devices work better?
The only real issue, that I can see here, is that he included the Market. He also made several tweaks (tweaks Deep Blue did not make), including raising the DPI and making it fit on a 2GB card.
This is not supposed to be a site about egos or who's copying who. He gave credit to Deep Blue and this is all that is necessary. He never claimed to have created the whole thing himself.

Really???? Maybe you should rethink that statement. There is no record whatsoever of deeperblue ever responding to one of your posts, or questions needing help from him on Xda. Having to communicate with someone that is 'fine with your work' by posting "DEEPER BLUE PLEEEASE READ" messages in their thread should be all the evidence you need. You might want to actually talk to him before making these claims.

No need to be an ass.
There's a One click root for Motorola 2.3.4 Gingerbread devices, if that doesn't work you might have to wait to for a developer to start working on the phone as it was just released like a month ago. Still, most developers work on high end phones and the Fire XT is a low end Android phone, you might be out of luck. Hope something works out for you.

Thanks! I appreciate your help. I will give this a shot and keep this forum posted. A lot of folks in India have bought this phone and are looking for a solution to rooting.
Please don't post in the wrong section, this should go into Q&A if it even belongs here

[Q] Anyone in the PHX area?

I would like to upgrade my Nook Color to a more advanced op system and was wondering if anyone could do this in the Phoenix area. (for a fee, of course) I am 70 yrs old but a little bit of a nerd and afraid to try it myself.

It's understandable your trepidation on trying this on your own, but it's very easy. Also, sometimes issues come up and if you have someone else do it, you're completely without any knowledge on how to even start fixing it. Many guides exist here and the Nook developers and users are a great bunch. Throughout XDA, I honestly haven't seen what goes on here elsewhere. Most are very nice and professional and actually know what they are talking about and very willing to help anyone out who is willing to do some work.
This thread may not give you the exact answers you need, but may make you feel a little more confident...it's one of my favorite threads I have seen on XDA.

[Q] Bootloader info request

Ok, so here's the skinny. I'm not an active member, but have been around longer than most. I have experience with a lot of what most of us (xda community) attempt with our devices. I recently acquired a bionic and lapdock which works beautifully with my MoPho. However, I have this Bionic just sitting here, and I cannot do anything with it (yet). I'm offering support to those who are working on a bootloader unlock, or will even take on this task myself if those who are/were working on it will catch me up to speed. Contact me, let's share notes, compare ideas, etc.
I think there may have been one or more efforts/projects to attempt this.
Here's a thread mentioning a bounty/donate and details checking ota servers, and ended a little silly.

Thank you for responding. I aware of the Cheesecake attempts and the bounty. That's why I made a new thread requesting those who were once part of or actively working on this project to contact me. TBH members, Hash, etc. anyone who knows the full scoop on it. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and I may know of a better approach.

Fire OS (5.3.6.4) to Android?

Reposting per recommendation from another thread on XDA. Sorry for posting in the wrong location!
ZeldaG said:
Hey guys, I'm brand new to some of this stuff so please bear with me. I've tried hunting all over the internet for help and at this point XDA is my last hope.
I've got a Kindle Fire 7 (5th Gen) that I previously used for reading books and whatnot. It's gotten so slow to the point it's intolerable and even on factory reset it's lagging pretty bad. I've wanted to try to remove the Fire OS from it for some time but never really could figure it out and today when I did try to do so I ran across some problems. I'm at the point where I really don't know what I'm doing and I don't want to brick it.
My version, according to the tablet, is Fire OS 5.3.6.4. I'd really like to get this thing converted over but I'm seeing that in some cases this device cannot be rooted because it cannot be downgraded. I'd like to hear it directly from the professionals that do this stuff in their daily lives.
So, I suppose in summary, is it even remotely possible for me to get this thing over to some kind of standard Android? If so, how do I do it? You're really going to have to break it down for me because I don't know anything about Flash Fire and some of these mods I'm seeing. I do computers, not tablets. Lol.
Thank you so so much!

This is the procedure you'll need to follow. Not for the faint of heart; involves opening the device and running software you likely have no familiarity with. I suggest you consider a $64 USD Onn tablet from Walmart that runs the latest version of Android right out of box. Good luck, mate.
