[Q] Slow charging on device - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
I recently bought a used Xperia Z1 and everything is great apart from the charging. It is horrendously slow whilst charging.
I've tried charging from my home PC, office PC, two seperate AC (wall) outlets and it makes no difference. Out of curiosity I downloaded 'Battery Widget Reborn' and it showed that my device will charge 1% every 6 or so minutes and will take 12 hours for a full charge to 100%.
My Nexus 4 charged to 100% within two hours usually so this leads me to believe that something is wrong with the phone.
Normally I would go consider the battery as the main culprit but after finally getting to 100% it doesn't seem to drain particularly quickly as you would probably expect from a faulty battery. It would be nice to compare these statistics to the rest of you to see how abnormal this is.
This moves me on to the the USB slot on the device - is it possible that it is faulty and therefore pulling very little power (barely enough to charge the device whilst using moderately)?
-
If this is the case then has anyone had any experience with getting their Z1 USB slot repaired or should I just try to take the device back and get a different Z1 from somewhere else?
Does anyone have any other suggestions for me to try? There is a Sony store in my city so I could perhaps go to them for advice (as long as they don't empty my wallet)...
Thanks!

I had same experience with not original Magnetic Cable. All what is not Genuine can compromise the functionality of your device. Check first the wall charger, it have to be 0.5VDC 1500mA. then check the cable or try different one. I will recommend the Original Dock DK31. In 2 hours mine is fully charged with that one.

im not sure but mine charged extremely slow aswell but it has gotten alot faster
im assumings its some kind of break in period or something

Is the usb cable original? Or else you could get the charging dock

Hi,
The phone usually takes about 3 hours to charge completely in my case, using the standard sony adapter given with the phone, probably i would suggest if you could borrow some other charger and try charging so that you can isolate the issue.(Please note the rating of the charger which you intend to charge for testing)
Also i noticed that the standard charger given by sony is 1.5A rating, so i usually charge with the charger given for my samsung tab 2 which has a higher rating and this one does a super charge in nearly 2 hours or less.
Thanks

Not for me. I am having slow charging as well. Using official Sony magnetic cable I have tried a couple different power adapters from Sony including the EP880 and even over night it won't charge it completely. Last night I plugged it in with about 37% left...woke up this morning after about 7.5 hours and it was only at 78%. Have to plug it in via USB to get any decent charging speed.

Then I asking my self what is different in the original Dock DK31 as it charge my phone very well.
I think that you think you have original one magnetic cable but it's not..

uhuhuh
mine took 5 hours from 0% ~> 24%

My z1 charges fine if i dont let it get below 40%. If i let the battery drop down to around 10% it takes a long time to reach 40% and then charges normally. It doesn't matter what method i use for charging it still charges the same, one observation i did make though is that when charging from a low percentage up to around 30% the phone gets very hot so it might be a good idea if we don't cycle our phones batteries so low?

I bought this phone in september this year .. the first time I charge it only takes 3 hours to full from 18% ~ 100% .. but by now it takes 24 hours for the full amount of 8% ~ 100% (︶︹︺)

solution?

Shows Volts and Ampere.
They are sold as "usb meter" in eBay/aliexpress for as low as $1.70 from China and actually work quite well.
Helps to easily spot a cheap cables(low ampere) or chargers(lots of varying voltage) that should go to the trash.

I updated to lollipop and this is happening to me now.
Before, I charge so fast, now on lollipop any charger I use is so slow even when turned off
it will take 7 hours to finish charging to 100%

I have the same problem too.. Using original charger and adapter. It took more than an hour to charge from 15%-25% even when the phone is switched off!

I would blame wake locks, cpu activity and network activity.
These phones are fast so fast they wreck the battery.
Try disabling the network or switching to 3G/2G
Have a look for any background apps eating juice.

[Q] Standalone BAttery FAST CHARGER?

Well, I have about 3 batteries for my Optimus 2X, and I'm managing of buying another extended one (3500mAh).
I have an external standalone battery charger which is the usual crap you'll find on eBay...there's no choice , they are all the same model

Now, the problem is that this charger, has a ridiculus current of 350 mAh +-50mAh
which is waaaaaay not enough to charge the battery in a decent time.
I mean the standard 1500mAh battery charges in something like 7-8 hours.
So the new extended one will take a full day to charge, at least this will not surprise me, considering the time it takes to charge the standard one.
So I'm searching for a wall charger that can charge batteries standalone... and that has a decent current I mean 800mAh or above.
It could be also integrated into a dock/cradle for the phone.....like the KiDiGi one (that should have a 800mAh current for the battery and 1000mAh for the phone), but it should have enough place to put an extended battery on it, which the KiDiGi one has NOT.
Hoping the community has some rabbits in the hat for me.
Thanks

Quite expensive, but it outputs 1A
Good thing is that the adaptor is separate so you can use your own adaptor, maybe a 2A one.
But it looks shady cause the picture on the box doesn't look like Optimus 2X

I went through the thought of getting a extra battery as well but the price and the extra stuff is just isn't worth it.
When i stop using the optimus 2x or if it dies i will have a almost useless cradle with useless batteries.
I went down the path of getting backup battery instead since i can use it on other devices. (the universal type)

EDIT: you can also get something like this but the output isn't great but you can use it for old phone battery and any battery which is 3.7V
There are a lot more like this, you can take your time to find the perfect one.

Thank you for your time!
Sadly none of them specifies the output current for the battery 4.2V @ xxx A
They only say that the usb port is feeded with the 5V USB spec voltage and the current of 1 A...this is the current that the phone receives and not the standalone battery. It's pretty easy to find simple wall charger to plug directly into the phone that will output 1A of current @ 5V.
The last one you linked seems to do, althought not explicited, 500mAh both on the USB 5V and on the 4.2V of the battery pins
Thank you in any case.

Most of such device don't regulate the current, usually just the voltage.
As long as the AC to DC adaptor can provide everything will go through (meaning the output current of the adaptor will be the rating going to the battery/phone or whatever)
And how much of it is used up depends on the device drawing power.
Note: you do have to beware of some made in china adaptors as the rated specs sometimes do not match up to the actual.
remaining on topic I think this could be useful 0.8A http://www.dealextreme.com/p/0-8-lc...-car-power-adapters-for-digital-cameras-41216
Regarding the 3500mAh extended battery this is the measured capacity after ONE cicle of charging/discharging from Battery Monitor Widget
I think this could be useful in the future, I will update it if the capacity increases meanwhile I charge/discharge it...at least for the few first times this could be possible.

I think the stock one is good to have ! No need to change !

yes but it is useless regarding the focus of this topic.
We are discussing about standalone spare batteries chargers.
I think it is better to charge your 3500mah (or 2500mah?) battery using a 2amp usb adapter. Charging a lithium battery at anything 1c and below is very safe. So if you're charging 3500mah (3.5amp) battery on a 1amp charger, it's only like 0.3c which is way less. Atleast if you use a 2amp charger, you can charge your big battery around 2hrs tops. But there is no desktop charger with 2amp output though, just usb adapters, mainly for ipads.

[Q] Very slow charging.

so the last recent charge when i put the device on the dock last night was for 6-7 hours.. that should be sufficient for the device to charge 100% it can be seen that there was no awakes and the screen was off during this period.. what could be the problem?

Are you using the supplied cable with the charger?
I personally only get a decent charge rate with the supplied cable. I have tried other cables of decent enough quality, but they don't seem to supply enough power to charge the phone at the charger's full capacity.

what i said was i am not using the supplied cable. i am using the Sony charger if you have read the first post. i assumed that it was just wires so i was still my previous cable.
It's strange. I have a decent 24awg cable that charges other android phones/devices in the house just fine. When I use it with my Z, however, it charges very slowly.
I'm looking at ordering a few more cables to try out, as I need a slightly longer cable than the one supplied, due to socket/bedside table placement (I don't want extension cables trailing across the room!).

There is a Nokia Charger that has a very long cord. I love it. It is rated at 1200mAh but charges as fast as the bundled charger.
Im currently experiencing that problem. Before, USB is really fast...from close to empty to 100% in less than 2 hours...recently though, it sort of degrades.
Now, my dock charger is faster than my USB charger.
I tried other chargers and cables too(from SONY too and 1 LG) but it seems its not the charger.
It could be software bug or worse...the Micro USB socket is broken.
I'll try flashing clean fware first to eliminate software bug...I'll let you guys know.

I thought this was just an xperia problem in general. With most.chargers I cant use the phone or it will still drain, and finding the right.combinationof cable and wallwart has been a matter of trial and error. I have an hp block with 2.5 amps output, that combined with a sturdy lg cable is the only mix that charges at a reasonable speed and lets me use the phone at all without continuing to decrease batttery. I had the same issue on several stock firmwares and 2 custom roms, so I donth think its an issue with monx rom.
Also: there is nothing special about the branded charger that came with it, it comes down to output and a quality cable. The stock.charger was **** for me as well, I took it apart and there is no chip or special hardware in it or anything, its just a cheap charger with staneard 1.5 amps out and a decent usb cable.
i used the charger from galaxy s4 ( 2A) to charge my xperia z ultra but it didn't charge it faster than the sony stock charger ( 1.5A). Weird. it seems that the phone doesn't allow more amps to be transfered. thats ashame cause if you use the phone while charging it doesn't charge almost at all. the consumption is higher than the charge rate
I know this topic is old, but I'm experiencing the same problem and haven't found any way out, and I think there's no point in starting a new thread while this one hasn't been locked. Has anybody figured out the reason and/or any solution?
About midnight, I connected my Xperia to the charger. It still had about 15% of battery then. And at 7am I realized it had only 65%. So, it took 7 hours to charge it about 50%. Does it really have to last that long? More than a half a day to recharge the battery fully, providing I wouldn't use the phone at all?
Currently, I use a Nokia charger, which gives 5.0V/1200mA (at least they say so and I have no way to verify it), but using the original one, with the cord it was supplied with, changes nearly nothing. Using a USB port of my computer instead of any charger doesn't help at all.
I currently use CM 12.1, but I had used stock ROM and had experienced the same problem then.
Any ideas, please? This is really driving me insane.
I have the same problem. It's not problem of battery for sure. Battery drain normalny, just can't charge. Sometimes I can charge my phone in 2h but typically it's about 10 hours....
Edit: in accubattery app I can See that electric current when charging is jumping from - 700mA to +800mA :|
for everybody who have problem with charging, I have some suggestion.
First, do a clean install of your desired ROM that have fast charge ability on the kernel (like RR or Linegae OS) and turn on the fast charge option. If your kernel doesn't have this ability, no problem. Just do a clean install to make sure everything is good.
Second, buy a high quality original Sony charger. Mine is UCH10 5.0V/1800mA.
Last, use high quality USB cable that has short and thick cable.
With this, my device took 1.5 hour charging time from 4% to 95%. But device get more heat during charge.
Hope this tips help you guys.
Sorry if my english is bad.

Charging time

I just wanted to know how long it takes to charge Note 2. Mine is on charging the entire night yet it goes to a max of 70%. Where as with hours of charging from pc usb it charges to a 100%.
Get the Galaxy Charging Current app in the play store, then check your cables. Probably bad cable. My original samsung cable was good until a couple months ago when it suddenly went from 1600 ma to 300 ma when it was charging.
Phone modify charge speed whith different cable configuration.
Your cable or connector have a problem.
It's a very simple math. Your N2 battery 3100 mAh. If you use Samsung 2A (2000 mA) charger, it will take you 3100 mAh / 2000 mA = 1.55 h to charge your phone. This is an ideal number considering phone is off (nothing else is draining your battery in parallel). Considering some efficiency factors it will be closer to 2.5 hours since you will not be able to get ideal 2A out of charger anyway. Your charger has the converter and usb cable. If you are not using original converter but rather something you got off ebay, most likely its rated a lot lower, maybe 1A or maybe even less - your charging speed will go down. Then, if you are using cheap usb cables - those might be able to handle only 500 mA of current (typical PC/laptop usb power) - slowing down even more. Plus, when you are charging your phone and you are running some cpu intense apps in the background (like GPS still on, etc.) - you could be discharging your phone at a fast rate in parallel with charging it up.
There are a lot of factors that will be contributing to slow charging speed of your phone. Typically converter and cable are the main ones.
Vectron is quite spot on. My Note 2 charges from >5% to 100% in about 2 and a half hours with the original Samsung AC adapter and USB cable if I'm not using the phone. The charge time dramatically increases if I use a low quality aftermarket cable.
I use an old 850 mA Palm charger which has a nice, thick, low resistance cable. Average time from ~10% to 100% is 3hrs.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.abmantis.galaxychargingcurrent.free
Check your charging current with the above app, my Note 2 comes with a 2A stock charger and with the stock usb cable I get average of 1800mAh which would charge my phone from 0% to 100% in about 1~2 hours, i have a few third party charger/cable too, I used the said tool to find out their charging quality.
Also if you got a third party charger, check its label, they usually have the average currents stated there, if you got a 300~460mah charger it will take a while to fully charge your Note 2.
Check your charger or cable it should take a maximum of 2 hours and half to fully charge the phone.

u might want to install this " GalaxyChargingCurrent_v1.1"
to measure your cable and charger whether supply 2Amp that they should,.
anything show above 1400 then u are fine,
I have an issue charging my 7105 where it will only put through between 100-400mah (according to the Galaxy Current Lite playstore app) through causing 8+ hour charges and fast battery drain, which seemed to be the case with 4 Different MicroUSB cables and 2 chargers.
I ended up fixing this with a custom kernel and rom (beanstalk) using the cable reporting 400 and the original standard charger.
With the uNEAK Engine, I ticked "Ignore 100mA Margin" and "Ignore Unstable Power", jacking up the sliders to max, and I'm now juiced up with 1800mah, charging well within 2 hours.

I'm intriuged with this "Ignore unstable power" option in my kernel as well, but it has a warning saying to try at your own risk. Do you think there are any safety issues with ignoring unstable power?

I can't say there's no risk at all, but the rest of my electronics haven't blown up yet so i'm sure it's fine

Sounds safe enough to me!
just want to share my experience : today i tried to charge my phone with LG G2 OEM charger & cable. form 10% - 100% only took amazing ~ 1 hour 20 min :good:. phone on standby, not turned off. i checked LG G2 forum on XDA about where to buy this charger, but no avail. some said they have to call LG US CS support to place order by phone. i didn't have Galaxy Charging Current apps installed when i tried LG's charger. if i can have a hold again, will update here.
here are the charger look :

First thing guys i did not started this with a comparission in mind, i was just troubleshoting my phone but while i was testing all the chargers i have laying the house it seemed to me like a good idea to take note and share my findings. That said lets get to the problem:
Last mont (october 2015) i bought a new battery from official LG retailer it cost me Bs 12000 (Im from venezuela, crazy high prices for us), i did this because a part of my touch screen is dead and i read in several places that replacing the battery may fix that, well it didnt but at least i have a new battery. Anyway, the thing was super expensive, i also bought a LG "Original" Charger + USB cable at Bs 3000 from at respected seller, the Nexus 4 original oem charger fall from a table and died, it wasnt broke just didnt charge anything at all, thats why i bought a new one. I didnt pay much attention to the charging time until like 2 weeks ago, i was playing in the phone with the charger plugged and the battery was slowly discharging wtf?, since then ive been trying roms and kernel settings because i was to lazy to try another chargers until today. I was thinking about ROM and/or Kernel related problem since I updated to Android M about that time (2 weeks ago). So i didnt have idea if it was rom, kernel, battery or charger what wasnt working properly.
My phone setup:
ROM: Cataclysm Oct 27 2015 + SmartRadio Fix
Kernel: Hellscore b87-M (Hellsactive governor, row scheduler, DT2W and USB Fast Charge both enabled)
Method:
I used 2 USB cables, a generic no branded and a samsung one.
In developer options i enabled Stay Awake option so the screen will never go off while the phone is plugged.
I plugged the first charger with the generic cable and let the phone charging until it showed me the stimated remaining time for full charge, then i plugged the next charger (still with generic cable) and rebooted the phone, after boot i wated until it showed me the remaining time to go with the next charger, once i tested all the chargers i replaced the generic cable for the samsung and repeated the process. So i tested the charger twice, one with each cable, and yes i got the same results every time, so iguess this android feture is actually doing his job and saying the truth.
LG Original Charger - Not really original. Lited Output: 1000mAh
Samsung original charger, i bouth this one like 2 years ago like genuine, but is not. Listed Output: 1000mAh Now blury but i remember it was that amount.
Blu Charger from a Blu Jenny TV phone i have. Made touchscreen go crazy. Listed Output: 500mAh
Orinoquia Charger. Orinoquia is a brand selled by the goverment here in Venezuela. Listed Output: 550mAh
USB Charge. Straight from the back panel of my motherboard (MSI B75MA-E33, Windows 10 Pro x64)
Nokia Original OEM Charger. This is from my mom's Nokia Lumia. Listed Output: 750mAh
The Nokia charger was the only one that was actually delivering the amount of power that it says it should deliver. From now on im gona have a hard time thinking about wich charger im gonna buy. Dont buy cheap chargers guys and only buy them from the company itselft when possible or an authorized reseller. Sorry for my english
I always used a 2A Blackberry Playbook charger for my Nexus 4. Had it for three years and when I handed it to my Dad to use three weeks ago it would still do a day and a half normal usage.
Best charger out there. Still using it with my LG G4. Charges super quick.
Your USB cable can also make a difference.
You mentioned that you played with phone while it was charging...Its possible that you had lose contact at same time and cable was not supplying enough current for battery to charge. Just go to battery stats screen and it will show charging mode. If current being supplied is around 500 mA it will shows USB. This has happened to me on various phones including the n4. I usually just turn off wifi and data connnection and turn screen off while its charging and it really charges faster. ( better option would be to turn off phone). My charger is also broken (fell from wall socket on the floor) and it takes abut 3-4 hours to charge the phone.
I have also used friend's nokia charger and they are quite good. You can continue using it.. better use a 1.5 A or 1 A charger ( stock charger output is 1.2A)
I would also point out the Blackberry charger I use has a captive cable which reduces the connection issues.

Thanks ill try to find a charger with that output that actually delivers it.
My 0,05$:
I tried out a lot of chargers for both my nexus 4 & nexus 9 (tablet) and got by far the best results with Nillkin chargers & usb cables (you can by them cheap from banggood.com). Bought 4 so far (home-office-multiple devices): Very fast charge (much faster than original chargers included with both Nexus 4 & 9), very decent build quality, useful USB cable, charger doesn't make any humming noise, etc. Can strongly recommend.
after i had lost my original n4 charger, i used a motorola charger, which delivered max ~600mA or something. then i bought sony cycle energy wall charger CP-AD2. it is very cheap yet quite powerful. i suggest using currentwidget for checking charging speed. sony charger delivers min 700mA max 816mA (i think its the limit of the n4 since sony charger can deliver up to 2A)

Thanks for the suggestion ill try that app, didnt know fo his existence jaja
The limit is 1,5 A coz the orginal charger delivers 1,2 and there is always 300-400 mah tolerance

I agree.
I'm using a Samsung USB cable with my original LG N4 charger.
It charges twice as fast compared to the original cable that came with the charger.
However, I'm pretty sure it was okay before. Maybe the LG cable is not as durable as the Samsung cable.
Okay!! Yes it is true. I myself now use only the Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime's charger. As it charges my Nexus 4 far more faster than the real charger.

Charging speed

To power up, you consume Red Bull. But your phone just needs its adaptive fast charger. Rate this thread to express how quickly the HTC 10 can charge. A higher rating indicates that it charges extremely fast.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I don't know but I am not getting so called "15 minutes to 50%" charging speed at all with the provided charger and cable, although it's showing "quick charger is connected".

I thought it was 30 minutes for 50% - http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-10/
I don't necessarily get that either per se. I remember getting 50% in 35 minutes tho. http://www.androidcentral.com/qualcomm-announces-quick-charge-30-0-80-35-minutes
I got 44 in 30 minutes. The thing that annoys me is Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 is supposed to give you 80% in 35 minutes, but HTC claims to only give you 50%, which is no faster than Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0, which in reality is even slow than that. Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 promised 60% in 30 minutes. So it's like what's the point of having a new technology that isn't better than the previous iteration....

Funny thing is I'm getting less heat and faster total charge time off my QC 2.0 charger. Either of my HTC QC 3.0 chargers are slower and get the phone much hotter (I'm assuming due to the higher fluctuating voltage 3.0 offers).
On 3 charge tests the 2.0 beats the 3.0 charger by a good 10 minutes.

I haven't really had a heat issue while charging. But I'm going to try my Anker Powerport +1 Wall Charge (Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0, also with Voltageboost and PowerIQ), though I've been using that one to charge my Nextbit Robin. I'll see if that makes a difference. I like that HTC including a Quick Charger, but I don't necessarily think it's the best compared to other competitors.

Yes I saw that my charger is incapable of charging my device as it is too slow. It happened for a few minutes. Then I pulled out n in the cable for a few times and it corrected itself don't know how. I am scared. I had great faith on HTC hardwares from my past experience.
Edited: "charger is not compatible....." was a custom kernel issue.

Did a test:
QC 3.0 (Charger from the box): +45% in 30 minutes
QC 2.0 (Moto Turbocharger): +37% in 30 minutes
hey guys , i bought 10 today
i have a question about charging with power banks , its ok if charging with my Xiaomi Power bank ?
I don't see why not. It will charge slower than with a QC 2.0/3.0, but it should work fine. I have a lot of power banks in my backpack and I use them all the time with any phone I have on me...

So.... here we go. First full charging Benchmark on my HTC 10 completely logged with an USB Powermeter.
From 1% to 100% takes 95 Minutes.

And the Voltage and Current recorded via external Powermeter.
Funny How the charge control completely kills the charging to switch Voltage in Big steps.... as seen on Minute 10 and 48.
Another fun fact is that we see the Battery reach 100% After 95 Minutes.
But does it stop charging? No!
It continues until 150 Minutes..... yes no joke. 2.5 hours! That's 1 hour longer than it needed to reach 100%
And one more Longtime Charge.
What happens if you leave your charger connected over night?
(Nope, not the same date as the 3 above, was on another charge)
(If the pictures are to small, blame Tapatalk resize algorithm. I will Upload full size when I'm back at my PC, which might be somewhen between 2 and 6 months.)

Fast! 2.5A is fast!
Mines been plenty quick for me, but its the first phone I've had where I've had the quick charge charger too. I understand the m8 had it though, which was my previous phone.
However, I'm grateful that it isnt crazy fast. The last thing the world needs is another exploding phone lol

If you have a ROM with a custom Kernel, check there first. The fast charge is a setting that can be turned on or off.
from 0~100%, when using the supply QC 3.0 charger it need about 1h35mins, with my anker 5 port 40w charger, it charger at 5V 2A at begining and slowly down to about 1.4a after 70~80%, around 1a when over 90%, total time need is about 2h.
I am using a usb voltage meter to check the voltage/amp.
Hi, i got a htc m10 from second hand, it came with a original htc charger and cable. But charger output is 1.5amps. And i dont feel like "super fast" Thats the real amp for the htc 10 chsrger?
