Is this possible? - Raspberry Pi Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I apologise for this I have googled and searched I find that some is possible I just would like the easiest solution if possible please.
Getting a pi.
Would like to download free torrent files.
Would like to play files (mp4 mkv etc)
And would like some sort of jukebox for my backed up music and home movies.
I would like it to download to an external HDD and also be able to play from the same external.
The pi will be connected via LAN.
I've seen some say that 2 SD cards one running xmbc and one running raspian is better?
Like I say apologies but I'm working off a mobile and not a PC.
Rich.

Just run RaspBMC and install transmission-daemon on it. Problem solved.

I would suggest OpenELEC

I was using both of them, but xbian is just better for me. You can get all of you ask for straight from menu xbmc.

Need some advice about video app and converter app.

Havent even tryed to use the phone to watch video's yet, but going to soon and need some advice to what app i should use or if the one that Sense use is good enough.
Also need a "good" converter program to convert my vidoe files, i dont mind paying since i know what a hell a poor converter can be.
Hope for some fast reply since im off to my vacation soon
I use "Xilisoft DVD ripper Ultimate 5" (not free) to rip from DVD's I use this one because it has a cropfunction that I found in no other software.
After ripping I just convert using "Formate Factory" (free)
I've tried convert from a bunch of different formats and never encountered any problems.
I would recommand "Videora Android Converter"
That is the program that I use.
And it seem to work quite nice so far.
and it's free ofc!
Any software that works to convert for the Iphone works perfect, and any movies/shows that are converted to play on the Iphone will work.

Streaming video quandary

Am thoroughly enjoying my N7, as I imagine, you are yours!
Here's a quandary I'm facing: I am an Amazon Prime member, and enjoy their video selection--both the free and for sale/rental. I mostly use Linux on my PC's. Amazon's streaming video uses Flash, which works fine in Linux, but not on the N7. I've thought about Netflix, but they're not (and probably never will be) Linux-compatible. However, Netflix is very Android/N7 compatible. All that put together, means I can't find a streaming service that works the way I do.
Anyone else in the same boat? What are you trying as a solution?
I was able to get flash working using Firefox and flash (both were side loaded) I found some helpful information searching on xda on how to get that working. Results have been outstanding for my friend who logs into a flash enabled site for realtor work. Haven't tested amazon videos yet but i will. Important: Chrome does not support Flash and the plan is that it never will.
Netflix works great. I sometimes really hate their isn't more selection. I keep it because my Dad uses it.
HBOgo doesn't work yet. I will be watching for a update because i have Directv and will install it as soon as it is available.
I already pulled some DVD's over (Star Wars, Finding Nemo) Handbreak and other software to get that on the nexus 7, looks and sounds fantastic. Everyone at work went crazy when they saw Emire Strikes back running.
I haven't tried or researched true streaming from my pc on my home network yet. I think that would be fantastic since I have a lot of content stored in avi's and other formats.
So far my tablet and my wife's are just amazing. She has the 8 Gig and I have the 16 Gig. We have both had ours since Tuesday.
I still am on the fence about the damn NexusQ. I would really like one but for 299.00 it just seems like I could buy another nexus 7 or something else instead. If that thing supported more than 2 speakers on its own I would have probably have tried to setup the extra speaker set I have in my office with one of those.
We need to get a really good software suggestion for nexus 7 thread going. Freenote, Moon+ reader, Cloud print, Sprinkle free have all been useful or fun to try. Sketchbook mobile works great. I am waiting on a screen protector before I try drawing with my dagi stylus.
I'm in the same boat...I was thinking about trying to load flash somehow...

In regards to Handbrake what format did you choose when converting the video. I'm guessing it was an avi?
Apple tv 2 is what i pick when I use handbreak, I noticed on the tablet while watching the movie that there are a few sounds streams, pick the 2nd one and you should be able to go higher on the volume.
The files are converted to m4v format and if you put them in the movies folder they show up and run right out of the google play list in the personal videos tab.

well instant video on amazon works in firefox with flash loaded. I'm watching the preview on amazon for 21 jump street.
The full DVD in vob files pulled to my desktop computer is what I start with when using handbrake. I am using a decrypt program to pull to my desktop. Using apple tv 2 option in file mode I am getting m4v format as a result. I need to try some avi files and see what I can come up with as a result.

Thanks for the Firefox/Flash suggestion...for some reason hadn't thought of that.

What is a good paid/free DVD Ripper that I can use?? I got one long time ago called 123CopyDVD but it seems like it doesnt work with new releases these days. I think I got it around 2005. Thanks for any recommendations.

Thanks guys, I have tried handbrake before and it wouldnt do copyright protection. Alcohold 120% has copyright protection too. Thank you LoopDogg, both of those worked perectly. AnyDVD copied all the files perfectly. Just gotta see how to convert those .vob to my girls phone or whatever she wants them on. i am using the clonedvd as i type and it let me choose a format type which has samsung phone (any android) will report on that after it finishes. about 1hr left now.

Indeed. Excellent software. Does all kinds of stuff.
Question, when converting .vob to any other format, it loses quality right? I love AnyDVD, copy entire DVD by-passes protection and when I play it through my laptop to my TV, quality is perfect, well because it plays the .vob files. But after converting to divx, mpeg4, or one other format i cant remember, quality is lose even if screen size is set to bigger, or quality output is raised, it still loses quality. Just dont know what options to choose to keep a good quality image. Mostly gonna be used for my girls phone and laptop to TV. Thank you.
Also, Ive chosen Android or Samsung Android phones format and quality is lose. Quality lose is normal?? Ive never really ripped a DVD, the first program I got, 123copyDVD was stupid. never did its thing and couldnt pass copyright protection.. even after I bought it and all.
I believe only an MKV with AC3+ and DTS won't affect the audio... Streaming an .mkv can be a headache...
I still use DVD fab, and I use plex to stream them.

The audio isnt affected. Its the video, you can see the pixels and little blocks..

Quite easily. That is what scientists do all the time - "the collecting of information about a particular subject". If you don't know something then you research to try and learn more or find out what you don't know.
Must have done him good as the guy quoted above designed the Nazi's V2 rocket and the USA's Saturn V - the rocket that enabled men to travel to the moon.
This is the mother of all DVD rippers.http://www.lgsoftwareinnovations.com/1clickdvdcopy.asp
When used in conjunction withy this program: http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvd.html
MakeMKV is a good free one. I rip with it then convert using handbrake.

HTPC build questions

Gonna build a HTPC. Netflix, Watching downloaded tv shows/ movies. Internet browsing. Could use it for rooting phones and what not. Hosting the odin/sbf/what ever fliles that kinda thing. Would be cool if I could set up a server type stuff so other computers can see the data and If i could see it on stuff like a cloud server would be a plus.
I don't know a ton about pc specs. AMD vs intel. stuff like that. I don't need some powerhouse here for what Im doing.
I'd like to keep it on the cheaper end, but good performing and reliable.. Maybe a barebones kit for the processor, box, power supply and stuff then buy the rest on its own.
Go Windows based or linux based? Did they find a more simple way to watch netflix on linux yet? last I heard you had to install a few patches find old silverlight and firefox or something.
Obviously HD compacity depends on what/ how much I download. But any brands to stay away from? Any specs I should look at?
Worth it to put a ssd in for the operating system then run a conventional drive for the storage? Will that help with reliability assuming that the drive wouldn't be spinning while I'm browsing/watching netflix and or the system is sleeping/standby?
Minimum amount of ram?
What do I need to look for in video card? AMD or Nivida work with linux? It would be nice to have it be able to work as a dvr if it won't require me to bump up processor specs a whole lot ($$ only worth it if the price is right)
I think that's about it..
Any suggestions? Thanks.
It's off topic, not development
can't tell if your being serious or not? I figured this would be the best place? seems off topic its not about phones..
99% of anything works with Linux.....I run xubuntu

I was told one of the brands of video cards didn't work well. something about the drivers.
Also Netflix requires silverlite to stream and that is something that is missing from linux. But I do have a ps3 so netflix streaming isn't a must at this point as I can just use that.. It would just be nice to have a all in one unit
This seems like a good start http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7544705&CatId=31 anyone see any issues? Seems the video card isn't that great but they are cheap now a days if i need it replaced.

What can I use my Raspberry Pi for?

Hello,
I got a Raspberry Pi Rev. B and a Nexus 7.
Today I got the idea to build something like a server for the Nexus 7. For example for Miracast Server or whatever. I don't know how to call it, sry. So please give me some Ideas what I can do.
Thanks

Raspberry Pi's are great! Think of it as a Linux box / VPS if you are famliar with them. The first project I did was make a webcam server and host that on the Raspberry Pi's server and view it anywhere in the world! I used old hardware to do this - follow some tutorials.
You can also do other things like:
Host a Minecraft Server
Programme applications using Python
Set the Raspberry Pi up as a remote desktop / GUI
Security System
XBMC Media Center - AMAZING
The list goes on....
Good luck with your adventure.
I tried minecraft but thats too laggy :/
BTW: RPi is amazing!

I use mine as a media center with openelec xbmc and it rocks. With cec I cam control it with my TV remote, and even those less tech inclined in my family can use it. Frig my 5 year old can work it

I agree with running OpenELEC on it. I absolutely LOVE it, I'm using it basically as an Apple TV that's both iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac compatible. if you have any questions about how to set that up feel free to ask.

Interesting, I've been using Openelec from the NOOBs installer from raspberrypi.org and I have been wondering how I would be able to control my pi without network connection and using xbmc from my android phone.. I'm gonna have to check out this cec..
I use mine as an OpenVPN proxy with Squid/Dante installed. Very convenient.

On my television(an LG), it's called simplink and all I do is press the simplink button, select the pi, which the TV calls an "HDD recorder", it connects and I can then control the basic functions using the remotes directional buttons and the play/pause/stop buttons. It's no good for more advanced functions, like the context menu, but I either use a usb mouse/keyboard for that, or my android device. If you have a network connection on your pi I highly recommend the app "yatse" for a remote. Super functional. Syncs library entries so you can browse on your phone/tablet and play direct, or stream to aforementioned devices(donate only) and about a million other cool features, nearly all of which are available on the free version.

RaspPrint
You can also use your Pi as a Airprint Server for iOS-Devices. This could be done with Debain for the Pi and CUPS.
I bought one with the intent of running something resembling xbmc on it. Unfortunately I ran short of time due to recently becoming a dad, and it just sat there doing nothing gathering dust in its perspex case. I ended up selling it to my boss as he is a mad scale railway fanatic and was considering doing something like this (alternate pages 1 2 3) and frankly I couldn't see myself finding the time to do it anywhere in the near future.
Has anybody used it as smb server on ntfs drivers to tell us it's speeds?
maybe also media server?
Couldn't think of anywhere else to post this, however just couldn't not share this article Developer Hacks His Microwave Into The Microwave Of The Future

Good if you want a two device project, or a Wii U like system on the cheap. Although BBQ Screen hopefully can get a client on the Pi going.

Media server(XBMC) or even a Minecraft server are awesome uses for a rPi. Could run a small web server on it as well if you had the need for it

I had mine set up with wordpress as a dev server. Worked great for building web pages for my main page. Took that down and am running XBMC with about 30G of music and movies. Using an external 160G USB hard drive for media storage
