OTA update problem!! - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, yesterday my htc one downloaded android 4.4.2 update(4.19.401.11) which is about 308.24 MB. I had TWRP system recovery so i flashed the stock recovery and tried to install the update but after few minutes the progress bar stoped and the green phone logo turned red than i tried to reboot it again show phone is ready to update, i again tried to install and again same happened but this time i left it on that red logo. while in that red logo(maybe warning signal) i left it as it is and after few minutes it rebooted and this time it said new update available to download(the ota update from downloads folder was deleted). I don't know whats going wrong, my current software version in 3.62.401.1( android 4.3 with htc sense 5.5).. I m rooted and also s-off. Please someone help!!

Try it again and this time when the green logo turns red, hold down volume up and press power button while holding volume up, the recovery log should appear , post the error msg that it shows here (you might have to try pressing volume up, volume down and power button for recovery log to appear, you'll have to get the timing right)

Do you have any idea why is this happening? I tried opening the ota package in my computer, and in there firmware.zip was not opening. It says the compressed folder is invalid.

No, mate, I don't know about this error, Maybe @nkk71 knows, better wait to see what he thinks about this . Are you rooted? Have you ever modified your OS by deleting any system apps?

i m rooted but not modified system apps or deleted them. but this firmware file does not contain "/system/framework/core.odex" and also firmware.zip doesn't open.. i dont think so, rooting effects the update because last time i updated to 4.3 while i was rooted.

1- firmware.zip won't open with Windows Explorer because it's a signed firmware package, this is expected
2- "/system/framework/core.odex" has unexpected contents -> it's either not there or not stock, the OTA will not go through, if all the conditions are not met 100%

Two of the guru roms that I tried on my phone were faulty and didn't let me take ota, the solution that worked for me was running a downgrade ruu , it could be that the guru Rom isn't accurate, read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2682363

[HOW 2] Downgrade software version (before OTA)

This tutorial will help you downgrade back to software version '1.22.605.0' this software version is based on the shipped ROM before the OTA.
1) download: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Inc...dio_1.00.03.04.06_release_161493_NoDriver.exe
2)Run the RUU.
NOTE: you do not need your device to extract the ROM.zip from the RUU (Radio Update Utility)
Click to collapse
A. after step number 2 you will see an image like this:
3) now go to your start menu and click on RUN in the textfield type %temp% and click ok. "you should see"
4) search threw all the folders that start off something like this {D3D2296B-5E22-46DB-BEF4-D7235D4BB485} inside this folder will be another folder with many stuff inside SCROLL DOWN till you see the ROM.zip
5) just drag and drop the ROM.zip onto your desktop like so:
6) renmae the rom.zip to PB31IMG.zip place it on the root of your SDCARD and boot into your hboot (power off the device then while holding the volume down + power will boot you into hboot)
7) the device will load the PB31IMG.zip and tell you if you want to update just volume up for yes, and when prompted to reboot just volume up for yes on your device and your DONE!!!
Hope this helps anyone...!!

Sorry, had to. =P Thanks for the guide!
Thanks
Thanks. Worked perfectly.
When I'm in the hboot menu the phone is saying that there is either no image or its the wrong image. What gives?
You probaly renamed it as
<filename>.zip.zip
Usally Windows dont Turn ON Extension in Browsers
Nope. I know better than that.
So are devs working on rooting pre-OTA, OTA, or both (meaning whichever works best)?
EDIT: I'm just wondering if that's why we have this instruction set posted. I guess if pre-OTA is rooted everyone will want to downgrade.
I don't understand the point of this, although it may be due to the fact I'm a android noob. I went into the recovery menu (I had already applied the OTA update) and selected "clear storage". That wiped my phone and sent me back to pre OTA state. I'm pretty sure of this because the next time I turned on my phone It started bugging me about an exchange update. What's the point of going through this complicated procedure?
i really dont understand the point of this????

Some of us are seeing the 1x for network speed a lot more, or for the first time after the update. This would revert us back to not seeing 1x.
But why do all of this when clear storage does the same thing with less hassle

I don't think clear storage takes you back to pre-OTA... you have to do that manually, im sure.

Definitely not. If you want to go to pre-OTA you need to follow this method.
If clear storage got me to pre-OTA i wouldn't still be fighting with this.
Seriously does anyone have any insight into why the heck this isn't working for me?
It's saying:
SD Checking....
Loading [pb31diag.zip]
no image!
Loading [pb31diag.nbl]
no image or wrong image!
Loading [pb31img.zip]
no image!
Loading [pb31img.nbl]
no image or wrong image!
then kicks me back to the hboot screen.
I'd really like to get my reliable 3g back.
Someone posted another one of these files, one with HBOOT .79 I believe. If you update hboot, then you can't downgrade then right?

False. HBOOT .77 and .79 are 'inter-flashable'. It goes both ways.
Well both ROM.zip have different Version details so i suspect that Downgrading from 0.79 to 0.77 SPL is Possible

OTA updates variables

Hi,
I'm on stock rom, stock recovery, custom kernel, unlocked bootloader and root... will I receive sense 6 OTA update?
By the way, which variable (custom kernel or custom recovery or uunlocked bootloader or root or other..) affects and locks OTA updates?
Thanks
Pretty sure you need stock kernel. Also you have to have all of the original contents of /system.
Root, s-OFF, unlocked boot loader, none of those matter. Generally.

I've found that with the T-Mobile US OTA updates, anything but pure stock (except for S-OFF) will result in a failed update. I run the stock ROM but have it rooted. I reflash the stock recovery, relock the bootloader, have even "unrooted" the phone, but the OTA will still fail. Only way I can get OTA to work is to install the last RUU.zip (for the 3.24.531.3 update), then it will update to 4.19.531.10 and then to the latest 5.14.531.1.
Evidently T-Mobile encodes their OTAs to be exceptionally picky about updating.

Custom kernel will also block the OTA notification? With my current setup, how will I know if I'm able to update?
That, I don't know. For that matter, it looks like I have some more learning to do on the part I thought I *did* know. Let's see what nkk71 has for us. That's what the forums are all about, sharing information

I'm being lazy here, sorry ,but I did promise to post something
A) when do you receive and OTA notification:
1- the ROM fingerprint, CID, and MID must match (if) available OTA
2- does anything else matter (root, kernel, modifications, S-On/S-Off, etc., even recovery) -> NO, but they may below
B) the OTA updater-script
you need to be on stock recovery, custom recoveries will not work!
what will it check:
1- the ROM fingerprint, CID, and MID
2- if you pass those, the OTA will check the actual system files (thousands of them) using SHA-1 hash to confirm they are as expected. Why? because OTA is just a patch (diff) between two versions, so in order to patch a file (as opposed to replacing it), it has to be an exact match.... if even 1 out of those thousands of files is not as expected, the OTA will not work. ---> stock recovery will change to red triangle.
Note: this also usually includes the /data/preload folder which gets deleted when using HTCdev unlock.
what will it do if the above are OK:
* the OTA will patch the existing files
* delete any files no longer part of the update
* install any new files that come with the update
* and finally update the firmware (hboot, recovery, kernel, thouchscreen drivers, bootsplash, etc.) <- note, since the OTA is an update the firmware.zip will only contain the files that need to be updated, so for example, touchscreen drivers are not included in every OTA, only when necessary.
and to the big question, what will interfere with successful OTA:
any modification to the files the OTA checks (in step 2 above), so:
- does a custom kernel matter (boot.img) -> technically no, but custom kernels may also overwrite certain system files, so in practice yes they may interfere if some stock system file was changed.... not because boot.img is custom, but because the files in /system which got replaced. (so flashing back a stock boot.img will not solve this!!)
- does root matter -> same as above, if the root package modifies any original files then yes, otherwise no
- unlocked bootloader -> No, doesn't matter
- S-On/S-Off -> No, doesn't matter
I may have forgotten a few things, so feel free to add anything I missed
EDIT: red triangle? do this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53151895&postcount=23 to find out what is not stock

Stock recoveries can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545227
(or you could download the OTA, pull it to your PC, extract the stock recovery from within it, and use that)
Hopefully no brick (but you have to be on a 4.xx firmware with hboot 1.56)
you may loose root, and have to re-root
PS: no need to relock bootloader, keep it unlocked

that's due to installing stock recovery, sometimes it happens, sometimes not
happened to me the other day too ... though one time i flashed like 4 different stock recoveries and nothing happened
can't you just use Titanium Backup, to restore what you need from the nandroid? because restoring the nandroid will also downgrade your ROM again.

can't you just use Titanium Backup, to restore what you need from the nandroid? because restoring the nandroid will also downgrade your ROM again.

[Q] Help me restore my M7 to get OTA Sense 6

Hello friends
I have a HTC One M7, US factory unlocked 32 gigs model, initially it was running on stock ROM's but to get 4.4.2 OTA Kitkat with sense 5.5 i had gone completely stock, relocked my bootloader and used 4.3 RUU from Htc dev center. After flashing 4.3 RUU, i had got a prompt update to 4.4.2 OTA and it went smoothly. The phone is stock since then and few days back tried updating to Sense 6.0 but the phone tried updating OTA, showed me a red triangle and reported "system/app/google.apk has unexpected contents" and the update stopped.
Am totally clueless as to what is wrong with the phone now, how do i correct this error to get OTA update, i cant find the 4.4.2 RUU on htc site. Currently running on 4.19.1540.9 so can i again flash 4.3 RUU, then update OTA to 4.4.2 and then another OTA to sense 6.0? Or is there a short and easy way out?
Thanks

Something is off.
There is no Google.apk ...
Seocondly here is the checker file from OTA.. for eg.
apply_patch_check("/system/app/Gmail2.apk", "1320556b1253fba48ef13ca56a53c3bf1994069b", "73cf8dcc9241d5055c57317c92c1b54566206d4a") || abort("\"/system/app/Gmail2.apk\" has unexpected contents.");
set_progress(0.054699);
That seems to be doing some kind of a md5 check on Gmail2.apk before patching..
Maybe you need to re-run the RUU for 4.x.x.x (I have not been able to run it myself) and if incase it doesn't run, then S-oFF and go back to 3.x.x.x RUU, and then update away.
Last option will be restore a working nandroid of 5.x.x.x and install firmware.zip from 5.x.x.x OTA.. (I do not suggest it unless you absolutely have to.. good chances of things going bad.. even if you follow directions, specially without S-OFF)
---
ALSO...if you can get the exact file name, MAYBE we can get the ORIGINAL file from a working 4.4.2/Sense 5.5 firmware.
I am not suggesting this fix, but for more reading: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1945938 This is for Nexus 7
Thanks Sahil,
I did the OTA again to get the file name and got system/app/plusone.apk has unexpected contents. So this is where the problem lies in.
Can you tell why the 4.xx RUU are not working, any reason why it didnt work in your case. That was what i was planning to do. How do we change the system apps with stock ones? Read that thread, can we flash system.img? Is it safe? I would need to unlock the bootloader again for it, right?

I am not sure why 4.x RUU are not working. You should try it on your computer however, as that will be the best bet.
You should also S-OFF before doing the OTA right now, as S-OFF will allow you to downgrade as a get out of jail card.
DO NOT FLASH SYSTEM.IMG... I just linked the thread for what the updater script is doing, do not follow anything from that thread. I REPEAT!!
Have you ever used Titanium backup or file explorer to delete apps from system partition?
Thanks bro, will try the RUU in a couple of days and update as to what happens. No clue on how to S-OFF but read a few threads on rev-one and firewater. Should i use firewater to S-OFF the device? Hboot is 1.56. As you say, will not flash the SYSTEM.IMG, not that adventurous though .
I have never ever used titanium backup or used root/file explorer to delete any system apps but did read that unlocking bootloader on HTC devices does delete a few system apps, maybe that is what's causing this issue or either it is just with this update, if those system files were missing, the phone should not have updated OTA to 4.4.2 Sense 5.5 when i had used 4.3 RUU and then did OTA.

unlocking bootloader with htcdev.com wipe /data including the sub-folders /data/storage/0 (sdcard) and /preload (/data/preload) where some HTC app are stored (flashlight, calculator, soundhound, weather animations etc etc. Some updates patches these files, if they are missing, the update will fail (MD5 check will fail) and report i.e ''unexpected content in /media/preload/calculator.apk''. Unlocking the bootloader doesn't delete file in /system, however its possible that some /system files were modified or deleted using root/custom kernel/s-off. Thats probably why you have a "unexpected content" (Md5 mismatch) of your /system/app/plusone.apk.
There is a nice post from nkk71 that explain everything in details: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52894276&postcount=9
if those system files were missing, the phone should not have updated OTA to 4.4.2 Sense 5.5 when i had used 4.3 RUU and then did OTA.

Only specific files are patched during an ota update, so in theory its possible to do an ota update even if some files are missing/modified. If the updater-script of the ota doesn't check for those files (no patch to apply to those files) there is no reason for the installation to fail. So its possible that your plusone.apk was deleted/modified before that update.
and BTW plusone.apk seems to be Google+ for HTC One., will try to find the original file from te ota.zip I have on my computer.
edit: looks like plusone.apk was patched in 4.19.1540.4: so plusone.apk from 4.19.1540.4 or 4.19.1540.9 should do the job.
apply_patch_check("/system/app/PlusOne.apk", "eb47d88d7a485509637a9c8b2027952c7dfd2f73", "ee503ad46dd0d209d294121925e4ee05b3fb82d6") || abort("\"/system/app/PlusOne.apk\" has unexpected contents.");

try this one, its from my 4.19.1540.9 backup. push it to /system/app and set permission to -rw-r--r--
try to update again and see if the script report any other "unexpected content" errors, if yes write them down and i'll send you the needed files.

[Q] Need help with going back to stock

Hello, as title says, I need help with going back to stock. I bought this phone super cheap (120€) from some german guy. It works like a charm, but my native language is nowhere so I decided to root and use morelocale2. But when I root I can't update. I already relocked bootloader.
Now I need to pick up right (RUU?), but I just can't understand it.
Radio-4T.27.3218.14
HBOOT-1.57.0000
OS-5.11.401.10
I wondered if I can use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2753631 , but it's called firmware so i don't know if it's ota or ruu, or i need to use that stock firmware downwards or am I completely wrong?
Thanks for all responses, cheers
There is no RUU available for your phone version If your phone is S Off then you can flash 4.19.401.9 RUU
If not then you have to restore nandroid backup or flash stock Rom reset according to your software version

unlock bootloader
flash twrp recovery 2.6.3.3
download and save the zip from method 1 in your adb/fastboot folder
with your phone in recovery, push the zip to your /sdcard either by using adb push or adb sideload
install the zip on your phone using twrp recovery
choose yes to wipe/stock recovery/stock radio
reboot phone
download and install ota
enjoy your phone
and btw there is not much difference between 4.4.2 and 4.4.3, only some security fixes and a crappy file manager.

You should be able to download the OTA from the phone. However, you may have some missing files that the OTA will be looking to update. In the post where you got the ROM towards the bottom is a preload file zip. If you need them this is where you can get them to complete the update.

I don't think I'm missing some files. I didn't install the aroma zip with TWRP, I installed them with CWM. Successful. But when I tried to install software update, my phone reset, I didn't watch the installation, but when phone booted, it had setup screen on it. I'm currently downloading a 4.4.3 OTA so we'll see.
EDIT: Downloaded OTA, put in sdcard, trying to boot into recovery, phone automatically boot to ota install, instead of green, it's red and after a while back to android. Im hopeless guys, I think i'll live with 4.2.2 and let someone more experienced and more skilled let this do.

you can not apply ota manually from stock recovery with s-on. go in settings --> about --> software update
First time you did, your phone performed a factory reset right? This happen sometimes when re-installing stock recovery. just apply the ota again from settings --> about --> software updates.
then if you get a red triangle with an exclamation mark inside, hold vol+ and press power then release both and you should see some text in yellow. post the text if it fail.

[Q] Red Exclamation when Updating to Lollipop (unrooted)

Hey!
I know there are lots of threads on this topic but almost all of them are for devices which are either rooted or unlocked or S OFF etc. My device is completely stock, I've not rooted it, I've not unlocked bootloader and I've not made it S-OFF. However when I try to update to Lollipop I'm getting the red exclamation mark error and I checked the error log and it says :
"/system/app/PlusOne.apk has unexpected contents" and the installation aborts.

What do I do about this? I won't be able to root/S OFF my phone anytime soon as flashing RUU's doesn't seem likely. Is there any solution at all?!
Any help would be wonderful!
Thanks!
And also, every time I try to update the the error occurs, I need to re download the update when the system restarts. Isn't there a way to prevent this? It's a waste of bandwidth

you will need to post your fastboot getvar all as soon as possible, the error you are getting is possible on any phone, and no help, it just states that apk file on your phone isnt as expected, the getvar will narrow it down to software version, region, phone model etc.
if your not sure how to do it here is a good guide http://droider.eu/2013/10/28/using-...to-get-more-information-about-your-htc-phone/ you dont need a data connection, just a computer, your phone and the usb lead.
BTW if you dont want to have to keep downloading the ota, when it finishes downloading, select install later, plug your phone into your computer and copy the OTA.zip file from your internal storage/downloads folder to your computer desktop.

yeah just run the command
Code:
fastboot getvar all
you can then either copy and paste the contents out the output here or take a screen shot of it, just make sure you remove the following information before posting it, your imei number and your serial number, those are 2 details you want to keep to yourself, post the rest of it and that will tell us all about your phone, full model, region, carrier, hboot info, current software, firmware, current security state of the nand chip, battery info etc.
Any of us can then help you fix your phone once we've got this ifo.

I updated my stock M7 to official lollipop last week. For some reason I can't seem to change the background color of the app list from Blue back to Black. Tried changing the themes but got nowhere. Anyone knows how to?

Help with letting me update my phone to Lollipop. The same error keeps popping up. Isn't there anyway to just get rid of the PlusOne.apk?
