[Q] General Root Questions - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am planning to upgrade from my current Xperia X10i to the Xperia Z1.
I was curious about the rooting process and things though. When the phone is rooted,
it allows your to add your on software right (like Astro File Manager or APKs not from the market)?
What is the bootloader for? Is it needed? I heard some people tell me that if you root the Z1 you lose the little
Sony things like the Bravia Engine and the camera. Is that so?
Thanks for your help.

You do not need root for this, just like on the x10, please note that you do not have to unlock the bootloader to root (In most cases)

YES, its like saying do you need battery, without it the phone wont boot

You lose some functionality (When unlocking the bootloader, not when rooting) but camera works the same. Its all explained here
Also, I do suggest you do a lot of reading, from your questions it appears you are not an experienced user, so please read before doing anything to your new phone

No, you do NOT lose functionality just by rooting. Nothing at all.
You DO lose a bit of functionality by unlocking the bootloader. And some have reported that even though with an unlocked bootloader that while camera works, you lose the Bionz image processing. You also lose the Bravia engine.
As gregbradley said, you can root without unlocking the bootloader (usually). Rooting and bootloader unlocking are different things.

That was in reply to his questions about unlocking the boot, you do lose some things from unlocking the bootloader, not from rooting, I edited my post to make this clearer

I assumed as much bc I know that you're no noob on this device. But I was just clarifying bc the question you quoted was directly about root, not bl. My assumption was that he was confusing the two terms, not you

No worries, I know. So many people get the two confused as its treated as the same thing on other devices such as Samsung

Thanks for both of your answers.
I actually fully modded my X10i just by following directions and getting some guided help
from other great uses from this site. But that was ages ago and Sony's phones have changed a bit in their make up since the X10 days.
So I wanted to know exactly what was going on. I remember unlocking the bootloader for the X10 and losing the camera, but that was fixed (I long forgot how).
I wanted to know just what was going on with the newest generations of Xperias.
Thanks for your helps. It's much appreciated.

Is it possible to root without losing drm and BE2?

The guides I have read say a full wipe is needed that loses drm and the Sony Bravia 2 engine. I don't like the idea of something totally irreversible, it makes it harder to sell second for starters.
That would be root via unlocking bootloader.
We are still waiting on a root exploit with locked bootloaders.
Be patient, it will happen.
Now it is possible. I rooted my phone successfully without tampering with the bootloader. More info:

Maybe best to wait till we get that bat file rewritten in English before publicising it too much.
It's not difficult but as it is, it will cause a lot of confusion.

Rooting won't brick your phone. And you can have root on stock
Sent from my C6903 using Tapatalk
You can root and stay on stock ROM no need to change to another ROM. Also rooting .257 firmware is not yet supported. Morever I read somewhere that Kingo and Vroot are under investigation for installing tracking malware.

yeah i know.because of that im waiting new update
What was that i heard about doing something to your phone messes up the camera? Will rooting it do that to the camera?
No rooting does not affect the Camera. Only unlocking Bootloader will mess up the camera.
Just tried vroot for my Z1 (6903...xx257 firmware) and it doesnt work
Hope to see some progress about it soon as I need root to restore my titanium backups from another phone

Please read some of the guides.
It is impossible to directly root that FW,
Downgrade to .534, root and then upgrade OTA
I think dont downgrade your phone to 538.My some friends have problem about camera and walkman bla bla.Wait the root programme for 257

There are no problems because you immediately upgrade to .257 OTA and the problems go.
You downgrade to the older version and are on it for as long as it takes to root (2-3 minutes) during that time the camera does work (But you can fix it if you want by clearing the data in the camera common app) but as soon as you upgrade it works again...
Do this my friend i did it and it work for me ...

Learn before doing atleast, so we don't get fifty new threads about generic issues.
This is a development forum, and it would be nice if it's not overly cluttered with useless threads all the time.
Also the mods gets a break aswell
I do not mean to be rude, but people who ask questions, which the answer to, lies a couple clicks away, generally don't want to bother themselves with reading.
This is a shame, because the great developers on here are excellent at writing extensively about how to do things, and what you should and should not do.

Here is a video that you might find useful:
That should cover a lot of the questions that you may have.

[Q] Should I root my Xperia Z1 ?

Hello everyone, I'm a owner Sony Xperia Z1 C6903.
I've a question.
1. Should I root my smartphone ?
I'm interesting of Timeshift video (slow motion) and Screen recorder, etc.
2. I heard about broken camera after root, is that true? Is it possible to fix ?
3. What about durable battery, keep live longer or shorter time?
I had root on my previous smartphone (Sony Xperia X10i) and after few months ROM start crashing, freezing and many apps functionally wrong or totally didn't work and was problem with SU..
What can you tell me after few months after root, how smartphone works? There are any problems with this ?
Let me know your opinions. I need to decide.
Someone have here rooted Sony Xperia Z1 C6903? Did rooted was good thing?
Which ROM should I chose?
If ROM start crashing, can I then back to original software without any problems?
I need also guide step by step how to root Z1, and I don't know what about that camera if it's true.

After root, your smartphone works normally, but with root. But if you flash wrong things (mods not for your phone etc) and don't read instructions carefully - this could be a reason for reboots, freezes and so on. You must know what you do.

It's been explained in some posts by our fellow devs in some of the threads - the answer is: no root without UB, because the kernel has a so-called 'verity check', which detects any system modifications and panics if it finds one, and for this to be overcome, there are already some kernels which bypass this check, but as you know, you can't install a custom kernel without unlocking the bootloader.
However, I saw some hopeful post about M, something about an exploit being available for half-root, enough to backup your TA and unlock bootloader with the option of re-locking it afterwards without losing your DRM keys.

WOW really so there is hope can you link to this progress?

Is DRM stil a thing for sony?

I will probably get full refunds for my s7 edge after a hardware failure and was thinking about going back to sony. Last one was z3.
I know that root without unlocking bootloader is not an option anymore, but do I still lose functionality by unlocking it?
It's really dull if they practice this bs alongside with open community project. Does not make sense.
and if so, can someone care to explain why on earth unlocking bootloader for sony should restrict camera functionality and x-reality? I'm OK with DMR keys for warranty, but this why????
and is there a hack to rerstore these functions ? ( that actually does WORK 100%)
Please answer all 3 questions.
Im really not sure if I should leave sony for good.

with stock kernel YES, u'll lose function like x-reality and camera quality. BUT! U can flash custom kernel with DRM fix. That kernel NOT restoring your DRMs it only restoring functions that depends from DRMs
