[Q] Can you flash factory images on the unlocked Motomaker Moto X? - Moto X Q&A

The title says it all.
Motorola only publishes "Developer Edition" factory images. Can you flash those images onto an Unlocked Motomaker Moto X?
Thanks!
Edit: Answer below

I am wondering the same thing. I have a bootloader unlocked AT&T phone. I would want to flash the factory image for the GSM phone (less the radio, as they are different).

Short answer... YES. The factory images for the Developer Edition phones is the same as the Non-Dev edition of the same model.. Example: Verizon Dev X is XT1060, Verizon Retail and Moto Maker X are XT1060. The ROM/SBF is exactly the same.
When it comes to the GSM Dev Edition, its the same as the T-Mobile X
Long answer.. read -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=51363645&postcount=394

I would not recommend it because of the different modem files between the ATT XT1058 and T-Mobile/GSM Dev XT1053,
Then again, I haven't really paid much attention to cross flashing between models. I think there were some fastboot flashing just system.img or certain parts, from one model to another back when 4.4 was first coming out... but I don't recall the details.

I'm going to fastboot the TMO 4.4 to my AT&T phone later. just going to skip the modem and see what happens.
edit: The 4.4.2 from the Dev Edition works perfectly on the AT&T phone (with bootloader unlock). No AT&T bloat installed.

Wow! That's a great discovery. I purchased a GSM Motomaker Moto X and flashed the factory images... I had some trouble because the device had already been updated to 4.4.2, and the images were 4.4. I got a security warning when trying to flash gpt.bin and motoboot.bin... otherwise, things went flawlessly.
So there's your answer. Flashing the Unlocked GSM Motomaker Moto X with the Developer Edition Images works just fine.

Another confirmation here. I have an XT1058 and flashed the 4.4.2 XT1053 sbf files. Works absolutely fine.
But now when I connect my phone to the computer, It says my phone is an XT1053

Just be careful at the OTA... you'll likely have to flash back to ATT, or block it, and wait for TMO/DevEdition XT1053 SBF to come out so you can flash just parts again.

At first I did not, then I tried it. Didn't notice a difference.

Here's a question; so I flashed the 4.4 factory image, and then (what I thought was) the 4.4.2 stock update zip. The kernel version is:
3.4.42-g8ee710a
[email protected] #1
Is this the official kernel?

Is this update zip not official after all? Does anyone have the official zip?

Does anyone know if it's possible to flash Verizon Factory Images to a regular locked XT1060, or do you have to have an unlocked bootloader?

Um, read POST #3 of this thread.. The use the same ROM/SBF, and locked vs unlocked doesn't matter since its signed by Moto and meant for that model phone.

[Q] What are the advantages of Dev Edition?

What are the advantages, if any, of the Moto X Developer Edition? Right now it is a $50 premium for the dev edition, but if I can accomplish the same thing on my own with a regular Moto X, is it really worth the extra $50?

the only thing you will see is it allows you to unlock the bootloader which makes rooting possible on all OTA's because you can just flash a customer recovery.
also when you unlock the bootloader on a consumer Moto X you void warranty when you do it on a DE Moto X it dose not.

Also, you get 32gb vs 16gb of storage.
The Dev Edition is also 32 GB, so it's actually the same price as the 32 GB carrier edition.
Can you do a full nandroid on the regular edition?
Also, I've read on twitter the non-dev edition may be locked down for good on 4.4.2.
If you want root, you may as well get the Dev edition to guarantee it.

If you don't care about the astheitcs then yes it's worth it!! You get an unlocked bootloader ANd Motorola will still backup up the warranty. As to what extent they will back the warranty you would have to ask customer service.
Hope that helps

Yes you can do a nandroid on any moto with a unlocked boot loader
No we are not locked in anymore than you are , the new bootloader 30.b4 can not be downgrade , that goes also for developer editions
There's no differences between de and regular editions with a unlocked booloader. The differences are the warranty, our warranty is void as soon as we unlock as yours is still valid
Firmware is exactly the same

The bigger question would be why would someone want to downgrade the firmware as each new firmware release "upgrades" the bootloader. So it appears that once you accept a firmware update on your phone there's no going back. If there is something about the update you can't tolerate you appeared to be screwed, even with a dev ed. At least that's what I'm piecing together. I have a VZ dev ed and will try to flash the modem and system files to see what happens when 4.4.2 comes out as I'd like to keep my options open if for some reason I want to downgrade. FWIW, I've been on android since the original droid and never felt compelled to downgrade but like the warm and fuzzy feeling of knowing that I can if I want.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

4.4.2 isn't out on vzw yet? When it does come out, it sounds like it should be possible to flash it without flashing the bootloader? What effect does the bootloader have on custom roms?
Sorry for some of the newb questions, but my Galaxy Nexus didn't have any issues/concerns with the bootloader that I'm aware of. It was just flash whatever and go.

Moto is completely different when it comes to boot loaders.
Pm me please, I do not want to explain Why on a open thread as someone will hard brick their device. I gave a thread that's stickied regarding boot loaders and there's an example of why you should not run the 4.4 system while on the 4.4.2 bootloader

No. That is an example of why you shouldn't try to downgrade your bootloader. That person's problem was NOT that he was running an old system. It was that he was running a two-versions-old system and then tried to take an OTA meant to upgrade a bootloader from two-versions-old to one-version-old (i.e. 4.2.2 bootloader to 4.4 bootloader but he was already running 4.4.2 bootloader) -- which all translates into he was (however inadvertently) trying to downgrade his bootloader from 4.4.2 version to 4.4

The SBF has been available for some time from -> http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0 and is available via direct request from Moto -> https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/recovery-images

So reading through the Motorola site it also instructs uo relock your bootloader. Is that step actually necessary? I'm trying to gather as much information for when I have to put both my wife's and my Moto X Dev Editions back to stock for the next OTA.

That's awesome, definitely saves a step in re-rooting after the next OTA. I've never had to deal with rolling back to stock to take an update mainly because I've been running CM for so long. Didn't bother putting a ROM on the Moto X because its very clean already. Just rooted to lose all of Verizon's junk apps.
Now to read up on RSDLite.

[Q] Converting xt1097 to pure edition

Have you tried unlocking your bootloader? It seems to me the Telus version is pretty much a Pure Edition, except for the model number... BTW does it have any TELUS bloatware at all?
FYI I believe the 1095 has different frequency bands.

I have not because as far as i understood the method was exclusively for the xt1095 but I'll give it a shot.
As far as bloatware, the only thing Telus installed on this phone is their "My Account" app. It's an app that you can download from the play store.
It's interesting to see the marketing used on Telus' website to describe the Moto X. The catchphrases are: "Pure Style, Pure performance" and then "Pure Android with the quickest updates". It leads me to believe that Telus will pretty much push out updates as they recieve them from Moto.
I'll be less inclined to root and flash if I see that I get timely updates, after using galaxy phones and flashing for the past 5 years i just want something that works great or of the box.
Regards,
Jeremie

I have XT1093 (US Cellular). The Pure Edition root method works for all variants with unlockable bootloaders. The key is to follow the directions completely. As it only BOOTS the system image rather than INSTALLS the image, it works fine. Boots the image once, installs SU to your system, then reboots to your system.

Sure thing,
I used the multitool to flash that Pure Edition Moto X 2014 (XT1095) ROM (full wipe)
Then flashed ATT Modem (downloaded from graffixnyc website)
Then sidloaded OTA update
Then restored my EFS from my TWRP backup.
Everything booted up fine, except I don't have a cell signal. It asks me for a SIM network unlock PIN. I'm stuck here.... I want to try and flash the telus modem. Not sure why it's asking for a SIM unlock PIN.

It was asking you for unlocking cuz Att modem is sim locked.
So did you manage to successfully convert to 1095? I'd like to try, but I'm a bit worried about the modem issues, I'd need a sim unlocked modem i can use with Brazilian operators.
I'm a noob in moto x developing, so I'm already reading what multitool is and how-to's.

Sure thing,
I used the multitool to flash that Pure Edition Moto X 2014 (XT1095) ROM (full wipe)

Any luck getting your phone working? You have an XT1097 right?
Hey guys,
Telus XT1097 user here.
Trying to flash back to stock so I can get some lollipop action.
Which factory image should I be installing here ? I don't think our phones are dev editions / pure editions...
Thanks !
Here is everything you need guys.

It's in Dutch but gives you step by step instructions how to backup your modem and restore it using dd commands. A google translate should suffice.
I have a 1097, but i haven't done anything yet, i don't wanna mess up my brand new phone LOL
i'm reading about the changes to 1095 and mostly the modem issue.

I wonder if that only works on some XT1097 phones, I got a "Permission Denied" error when I tried it on mine.

TUT flash any firmware into your Sprint HTC One and unlock the sim card.

Finally I found the way to do smthing seems impossible.

1/ back to stock, reroot, TWRP, read how to sim unlock the Sprint HTC 10 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-one-m9/general/nv-unlock-sim-t3314755
2/ download Viper10 2.5.0 (or any similar rom based on 1.80) inside Aroma, YOU MUST CHOOSE CARRIER IS SPRINT
3/ reboot the phone, dial ##3424# to open DM mode on (just check)
4/ download the firmware you want to flash, open the zip file, edit android-info.txt to match your CID and MID (don't change your phone MID)
5/ DELETE RADIO.IMG
6/ flash the edited firmware
7/ reboot into download mode, check your radio (should be [email protected]), your firmware version,
8 reboot phone, dial ##3424# to open DM mode on (if you can, congratulation)
9/ unlock your simcard again
10/ flash any rom match your firmware.
11/ enjoy
Can anyone verify this? Not to be doubtful but I'm ever so slightly skeptical.
Further, do I have to reunlock my SIM if I am to just use Sprint service?

If you've any trouble, U can back to original RUU. No step can brick your phone.
Of course, after flashing new firmware not provided by Sprint, your phone will be sim locked. I only provide the way to keep the MID, Radio and turn on DM mode to reunlock the phone.
If U're using sprint service, U must choose carrier as Sprint inside Aroma. I don't have sprint sim card so can't verify if you have to reunlock again

It isn't the first time I mod the firmware like this. In fact, HTC 10 can't flash the radio. The only way to flash radio is put it inside the firmware. I figured out it and try to keep the original radio.
The next trouble is trying to reunlock the sim card and ##diag# only active with sprint service right ? so I keep the sprint service.
When U keep the sprint service and original radio, u don't have to reunlock again. But I can't verify it because I'm no longer live in US.
Just back up anything u need because It the new 1.95.401.3 can format your phone. 1.90.401.3 was fine.
@Captain_Throwback do you think this'll work or I will end up with a brick?
I'd like to try and see if CM13 is bootable after converting my phone to pmeuhl, but I'm a bit hesitant to try this.

I have no point of reference for this, as I've never had a Sprint 10. It shouldn't brick anything, if the firmware is all compatible, but I don't know for sure.

I might give this a go. Now that multirom is out, I'll see if CM is bootable, but I am extremely doubtful.

can flash any firmware zip file but It won't change your radio because you have to delete radio file inside the zip.
BTW, make sure flash any custom firmware support Sprint carrier to unlock simcard again
Thanks friend
Wondering which firmware that support Sprint?
Aa far I know only Sprint firmware will support Sprint.

Does anyone have the latest Sprint radio IMG file? Thanks in advance!
I can confirm that this works! I took a brand new Sprint HTC 10. Unlocked bootloader. Flash TWRP and flash superuser. S-OFF using Sunshine. SIM unlocked it with the NV method (I'm on AT&T). Changed the CID to SuperCID (11111111). Downloaded the latest 1.96.617.2 firmware for unlocked/developer model. Removed the radio.img from the ZIP. Then flashed the ZIP. The Sprint radio is preserved and my SIM unlock was also preserved. Then I just flashed LeeDroid ROM and off I go.
Hi
Its will support LTE band 3?
Thanks

It's from this thread. It's the unlocked/developer firmware.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3387520
If the Sprint radio doesn't support band 3 then I'm afraid flashing the firmware doesn't do anything. I'm still on the Sprint radio. I can't get a signal with other radios.

That's correct. When I flashed the unlocked/developer firmware with the international radio in it my AT&T SIM is not recognized in my Sprint HTC 10.

So my project with super CID
1) Flash Verizon firmware with Verizon radio.img
2) Flash International firmware with Sprint Radio.img
Hope its worked
Thanks
just to clarify, 1.96.617.2 is not International firmware, it's US Unlocked (Unlocked/Developer)...

LG V40 bootloader unlock & root

I got my LG V40 Sprint bootloader unlocked and installed magisk to root it so is there any way to flash Verizon Pie firmware on it? As there is no LGUP version released supporting it currently, I don't want to wait for OTA.

Did someone do it for you? And i don't think there's anyway to flash any sort of firmware on it at the moment.
I just need to find out which firmware supports Metro by T-Mobile's HD calling and the sorts.

Which network does KDZ work best for Sprint and on Android PIE?
I would like to purchase a new LG V40 Sprint phone and convert to Verizon. Can it be done and be 100% fully functional like a original Verizon V40?
By the way, it will be used on Straight Talk with there Verizon sim chip.

Try RESTORE DEFAULTS in APN menu first. If it doesn't help, PM me I will try to help with restoring backup if we have done it for you
Hi. I cant restore default because the 3 dot on the right corner is missing and grayed out.

I can ensure you that US UNLOCKED firmware works on Sprint V40, I flash it to everyone course it is bloatware free. Also I do full system backup in case of official unlock will be done later.
Why do you want Verizon fw? What features do you need?
90% that voice via up (internet calling) will not work.

I realized that using the Sprint fw if I make a call I can't use data.
Does the Sprint V40 have to be bootloader unlocked before I can flash anything else?

Yes, unlocked or updated directly. Stock fw uses old laf which doesn't allow to flash
