Directions for Best Android Experience :)

Ok, so we all want the best of the best of experiences for our DX superphone. Well, I am here to tell you how I have my setup.
The goals of the ultimate setup are to:
1. Keep as much privacy as possible
2. Ensure the best performance
3. Ensure best method to extend battery life
4. Ensure best feel
5. Ensure HAPPINESS!
NUMBER ONE:
First things first; we need to install the absolute best ROM right now. The ROM is called FISSION 1.1 by Team DeFuse. You will most likely have to re-root the phone after installing though. It is worth the hassle.
Known issues with Fission 1.1 but I'm sure will be fixed:
1. Compass Calibration
2. No custom battery profiles
NUMBER TWO:
We need to install all of our applications.
NUMBER THREE:
If you don't have them already, download the paid version of Titanium Backup and the application called AUTOSTARTS and very very importantly, DROID WALL, SetCPU, CacheMate and also very importantly, Advanced Task Killer
NUMBER FOUR:
Restart phone. Upon reboot, we will first open up Droid Wall and give it root privileges. Then, we are going to fill in both boxes with checkmarks next to only the applications which you use a lot and need internet access! It is good practice to look at what all apps need access to when installing applications. If an app like Notepad for instance needs Internet Access, we know there is a problem. It is apps like these, we don't want to have access to the internet.
You will also have to have checkmarks next to "Media Server", "Browser", "Calender", "Calender Storage", "Email", "Google Search", "Maps", "Market", "Messaging", "Street View", and "Visual VM". Those are the ones which need to be allowed in order to not cripple your Android experience. Obviously, the remaining apps are UP TO YOU.
You should manually disable and re-enable the firewall after every reboot! You then want to kill Droid Wall and the other showing apps with Advanced Task Killer. Once Droid Wall sets the firewall rules, they stick regardless if the app is running or not. There is no need to leave it running.
NUMBER FIVE:
Now, we are going to open up the program AUTOSTARTS! It will take awhile to load all of the apps of your system. This app makes it so you can actually reliably use ADVANCED TASK KILLER without the apps you kill AUTOMATICALLY restarting and thus wasting precious battery.
You want to disable all your 3rd-party user apps in EVERY CATEGORY except for the Widget Categories at the bottom. For the first app you disable from starting, you will have to give AUTOSTARTS root privileges.
Don't disable "Google Voice", "Visual VM", "Dialer", "usb", "Dialer Storage", "Battery Manager", "Battery Manager (Power Profile Receiver)", "Google Partner Setup", "Google Services Framework", "Voice Dialer" (If you use it), "Email" (If you use it), "Messaging", "Bluetooth Share" (If you use Bluetooth), "Contacts Storage", "Droid Wall", "SetCPU", "ADW Launcher" (If use it), "Launcher Prof" (If use it) or "Launcher" (If use the stock launcher)
Everything else should be clicked on and disabled except for apps which are your widgets on your homescreens and in the Widget Categories!
You are going to notice a crazy increase in speed from this!!!!
NUMBER SIX:
We need to reboot. Upon reboot, open up ADVANCED TASK KILLER. We now need to put some apps on the ignore list.
The apps I have on my ignore list are:
SetCPU, Messaging, Music, Google Search, Market, Visual VM, Beautiful Widgets, Voice Search, K-9 Mail and Google Voice
You would also want to put any apps which are related to any widgets you have on your homescreens on the ignore list too!
This will effectively make it so any app we close, IS CLOSED FOR GOOD until we ourselves initiate it MANUALLY.
NUMBER SEVEN:
My phone is a dud; well at least the CPU is. It won't go over 1100mhz and be stable regardless of how much voltage I crank into 'er. So, for my phone, I modified the 1.1Ghz .zip folder which is installed in the Fission folder of your SDCard when you install Fission. I modified the setscaling.sh in text editor and changed the following values:
Changed the 800mhz to 900mhz. You may or may not have to raise the voltages that they have pre-set for the 800mhz and 1100mhz settings. If you are not stable, just give each of them a couple notches of increase.
NUMBER EIGHT:
Upon reboot, we need to setup SetCPU. We are going to create 3 profiles
1. Screen off --> 300min / 600max --> OnDemand
2. Charging AC/FULL --> 300min / 600max --> OnDemand
3. Charging USB/FULL --> 300min/ 600max --> OnDemand
We then go back to the homescreen "of SetCPU" and change our values of what we want the phone to do whenever the screen is on and it is not charging. Here we want to put 900mhz for the min and 1100mhz for the max.
For some reason, even if SetCPU is not disabled in AUTOSTARTS, it doesn't load the values upon reboot. You will have to manually open up SetCPU just one time for each reboot.
IMPORTANT: If you want to OC higher or maybe not even at all, have at it. However, I still think SetCPU and the profiles I listed above would be great for you.
NUMBER NINE:
This may not be an option for some of you, but I like to disable remembering form data, cookies, cache, passwords, and history on my browsers.
The best browser to use "IMHO" is the new XSCOPES version 6.
If you like some other browser, just change the privacy settings to those of above to be safe. If you can't live without, then just don't worry about it.
NUMBER TEN:
Install CacheMate for Root Users.
In the settings we want to have checked:
1. Clear TA Utility Caches
2. Close CacheMate on Close
3. Clear Admob and Google
4. Clear Flash Cache
5. Clear Temporary Cache
Then, we want to have everything checked in Data Experimental and SDCard which is Relevant to our phone. For any app you don't have, don't put a check next to it. If you use apps like APMobile (Associated Press), you want to uncheck that and apps like it so you don't have to set it up every time you open the app.
I don't really like letting CacheMate run all the time being set to automatically clear on intervals. I didn't mention it, but I NEVER leave ADVANCED TASK KILLER run all the time either.
Uncheck power clear on the main screen and clear the cache ever day or two.
NUMBER ELEVEN:
Install ADW Launcher. It is by far better than LauncherPro. Only continue to use LauncherPro if you can't live without its widgets.
In ADW Launcher, we want certain settings done.
1. In Screen Preferences, we want to have both Desktop Scrolling Speed and Desktop Overshoot set to "0"
2. In Drawer Settings, we want animated drawer check, show app labels checked, fade app labels checked and for background color, I like to use a dark color with some transparency!
For Zoom Effect speed, set it to its lowest setting of 300ms
3. Under System Preferences, we want to check Wallpaper Hack and set Scrolling Cache to "Auto". Obviously, if you have widgets, you will want to check scrollable widget support.
4. In UI Settings, I check everything besides:
Dockbar, Closing folder, Secondary ActionButtons and Show Desktop Indicator.
I have AB Scale Factor set to "5".
After you get your homescreens all set up EXACTLY how you want them, backup both the desktop configuration and backup ADW settings. Also, make sure to do another backup in Titanium so when you restore ADW Launcher after installing a new ROM, it is exactly how you had it before.
NUMBER TWELVE:
Open up the program which is already installed called Spare Parts. It will be in your App Drawer. Don't install it again from the market unless you for some reason don't already have it in your app drawer.
1. I have haptic feedback and compatibility mode checked.
2. Set the "Window Animations" and "Transition Animations" to FAST
NUMBER THIRTEEN:
Do a Titanium Backup via Batch operation.
1. There are only 2 options in the batch operation options which you should ever need to use!!! They are:
A) RUN - Backup all new apps & newer versions
B) RUN - Restore Missing Apps with data
Run the backup every once in awhile to keep the backup of your apps up to date.
IMPORTANT:
When restoring apps, UNCHECK ALL SYSTEM APPS FROM BEING RESTORED!
The paid version gives you HyperShell which means you don't have to manually click each app when it is restoring. It makes the process very simple.
You also want to uninstall the older version of Flash Player and get the newer one from the market.
I have followed this guide for Titanium and have installed numerous ROMS for the Droid 1, HTC Droid Incredible and now the Droid X WITHOUT EVER HAVING ISSUES!!!
NUMBER FOURTEEN:
Go into ROM Manager and install the AOSP Keyboard under /Download ROM/Drod2169/CHANGE OPTIONS-Focused-1.0/AOSP KEYBOARD
You will automatically have to check FIXED 8MP AOSP Camera as well. That is the camera installed by default on Fission 1.1 so it won't hurt anything. Don't check backup data or wipe data/cache!
Also, I would install both QuickOffice and DX_Music.zip under the SDCard/Fission/Add-Ons directory. You obviously have to do this in Recovery!!!
The Music player will be 100% identical to the one that comes installed by default on Fission 1.1, but it gives you the option to pause play and seek tracks from the lockscreen!
NUMBER FIFTEEN:
Install any themes or mods which are compatible with your ROM and set up your sounds and everything else you like to do and enjoy your android device to its fullest
I know I probably missed a couple things but will update when I remember.

EDIT: I had Fission 1.0 for some reason. I meant Fission 1.1. I'd also like to point out that Rubix 1.0 is the same exact thing as Fission but with more optimizations and tweaks. I ran them both but slightly prefer Fission 1.1

How dare you recommend Advanced Task Killer. You need to have your Android License revoke immediately.
Since we're talking about rooted phones and memory management, use Autokiller. It does what android already does natively, only better.
Nice write up, but do yourself a favor and get rid of ATK!

Please don't get caught up on the ATK thing. I don't want this thread turning into a pro or con ATK. One will however say that ATK without AUTOSTARTS is pointless. Due to AUTOSTARTS, ATK is once again relevant and really beneficial.
If the app AUTOSTARTS or anything like it wasn't available, I wouldn't tell anyone to install ATK. With my setup, any app we kill with ATK will not be automatically restarting thus wasted battery. That was the biggest issue with ATK before AUTOSTARTS was available. Now, anything we kill are only apps we ourselves initiated.
Apps left running do still use CPU resources. The latest privacy study of Androids apps show that 50% or so of the tested apps sent private information to advertisers in the background.
When the Android system only has like ~40mb of free system RAM available, the system will no matter what bog down somewhat. We can get rid of this from ever happening.
Just put the little green ATK widget on your main homescreen and one tap and your done. The ATK widget takes the same amount of space as an icon. It is simple and easy.
Doing it like this ensure at no point EVER is the Android system going to lag.

A few weeks ago. Excellent device too. I'm confident that the locked BL will be defeated. I'm running through some of luv2increase's mods now... I like the idea of being able to defeat autostart and place strict control over the apps I allow to run.

Yes it is an excellent device just today I posted on Twitter I have all the high end Android phones and the Motorola implementation of the Droid X is by far the best nice polish too. I been playing a lot with SetCpu profiles (removing bloatware via adb) and power saving settings and can get over 18 hours of heavy usage. Just starting to try these other ROMs out. As always if you need a tester or I can help you with something let me know I have been on Android a while now and have a lot of experience and a ton of apps.
A lot of you guys have no idea the asset that Sleuth is having a Droid X.

Alot of great tips in the OP. I actually run with almost this exact setup. I am using Rubix 1.0, though. Great rom. These tips will help tremendously with performance and battery life. Thanks for passing this along.

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL THREAD.
IF YOU FIND ANY DUPLICATE THREADS WITHOUT PROPER CREDITS FOR ME, PLEASE REPORT.
I SHALL TAKE THE NECESSARY ACTION ​
Most of you might be very much familiar with the rooting procedure. Its the process of giving yourself superuser permissions (ex - administrator in windows xp ).
If you are using a custom rom, then there is no need to specifically root your phone. But if you are using stock roms, then there is a guide to root in the forums.
Once rooted, you can now take your own decisions for your device which include improving system performance or flashing custom roms using cwm recovery or using any of these below listed apps. Use it wisely, as playing with your device performance can have damaging effects.
I AM NOT AT ALL RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE TO YOUR DEVICE BY YOU.
Moving on, many of the rooted-on-stock and custom rom users might already know most of these apps and their uses, so this thread is for the begginers who have just rooted their devices.
Further, most of these apps are available in the playstore (mostly paid, but if you want the cracked versions, you can find them in the internet.
So here are some of the apps that might be usefull for you. I will also update this apps list as soon as, I find more usefull apps.

Titanium Backup -
Losing all the apps on your device accidentally or while flashing custom rom is a bad feeling. Re-downloading every app is a painstaking work so fortunately for root users, Titanium Backup provides the solution. Titanium Backup is a powerful backup utility which stores your apps, app data, and system data on your SD card for safekeeping. Titanium Backup can also painlessly remove, freeze-unfreeze any app, including system apps. This app can be configured to run its tasks on a schedule, and the $3.99 donate version allows you to set up multiple schedules for the various combinations of backups it is capable of performing.
ROM Manager -
ROM Manager allows you to flash almost any ZIP to your phone, whether it be a kernel, ROM, app package, or radio image or even initiate a nandroid backup.
Although it is strongly recommended to use the clockworkmod recovery or rz recovery for cfw and odin for stock, as many mini users reported it was bricking their phone.
ShootMe -
This app is for all those dev's out their, who want show the world what they have achieved.
ShootMe is a screenshot capture app that allows you to take a screenshot of your mini with a simple shake of your device.
Juice Defender: Ultimate Juice Defender -
Juice Defender is a battery conservation app. It uses various triggers, rules, and timers to control how often your device utilizes 3G/EDGE APN’s and wifi. These data connections are the number one drainers of battery life when your phone is idle, so Juice Defender allows you to decide when, where, and how often you want them to be active. Ultimate Juice ( paid version of Juice Defender) must be installed over an existing copy of Juice Defender, which unlocks a few additional capabilities for users with root permissions. It also provides some extra goodies for root users including the ability to adjust CPU clock speeds on the run to conserve battery, which requires root permissions.
ES File explorer -
This an application for exploring your phone’s directories.
For developers, its usefulness is self-explanatory. For the average user, it certainly is a solid file explorer with a better interface especially, ES file exp. One more unique feature of these file explorers is the ability to modify permissions settings on files or folders. It comes packed with some solid features apart from the conventional file viewing. Its completely free and is available in the market.
Root explorer -
Similar to any other file explorer app in the market. But its specialty is that, it can crawl deep into the deepest corners of android and modify them like the elusive dalvik cache to sd. Its a paid app available in the market.
Cachemate -
CacheMate is cache cleaner app like no other cache cleaning app does it. Two, CacheMate can clear certain data from the device. This was/is extremely tedious to accomplish and linux does not handle this. Three, CacheMate clears cache from the SD card. While you can go and do this yourself, CacheMate does it all for you just by a simple tap on screen.
Reboot Control-
Reboot Control does 4 things, and 4 things only:
It allows you to reboot, recovery boot, wipe handset or bootloader boot with a single tap. The real usefulness of QuickBoot is in the ability to make home screen widgets for these functions, so they’re always at your fingertips. Since, almost all the custom roms these days use this as a built-in function so this app can be usefull for the stock users.
AdFree -
Blocks data access to a list of sites that store ads. Speeds up browsing experience as the ads aren’t downloaded along with the site and even blocks many ads from displaying in many of the ad supported apps.
Virtual Button Bar -
If your mini's buttons are about to fall off or something has happened and your buttons no longer work, then this app can save you a lot of time and trouble. Its entire purpose is to provide on-screen emulation of the dedicated hardware
buttons on most Android devices. The app offers various customizable features, such as user-definable buttons and positions, lockscreen animations, the ability to change various hardware button actions (volume, camera, etc) and a few
aesthetic variations such as transparency and button size. Virtual Button Bar is $1.63, but there is fully-functional trial available, as well in the playstore.
Call Blocker -
If you have specific numbers that you want to be blocked each time they call, then there’s a good chance you’ve turned to apps that automate this process. There is one problems with that, though:
Most apps still let your phone ring at least once. That’s where Root Call Blocker rises above the rest. Root Call Blocker detects incoming calls at the system level, so it can block them much more efficiently. In fact, it’s so efficient that it blocks the call before your phone even rings, so you’re completely unaware that the offending caller has tried to contact you in the first place. The app offers
many other features as well, such as call logs, multiple rejection methods, multiple profiles, caller grouping, SMS auto-replies, and much more. This app is not free, but there is also a trial version so you can give it a try before dropping any money.
SetCpu / NoFrills -
These apps let you control the speed of operation of your mini. They come with all the latest governers and I/O schedulers, though some roms governers are rom specific. Also, an Overclock kernel is required to use this app.
LBE Privacy Guard -
This is probably one of the best privacy guards that are ever seen apart from the pdroid patch by Yagya. Its functionality is akin to that of a software firewall, with some elements of Windows UAC thrown in. LBE sits in the background and “listens” to your apps as they request various permissions and then provides you a notice with options to either grant or deny access.
Dual Mount SD Widget -
The inability to mount your SD card to both your phone and PC at the same
time can be quite annoying, as you can’t access any of the information or apps that reside on your SD card when your device is mounted to your computer. Dual Mount SD Card is a simple and practical solution to this problem, as it allows you to access your SD card from phone and PC alike while it’s mounted. In order for this app to function properly, you must first disable Android’s auto-mount option, using the widget instead. This available on the playstore.
Hexamob Recovery Pro -
If you’ve ever accidentally deleted any data from your mini, then Hexamob Recovery Pro is here to save the day. Hexamob Recovery Pro is a data recovery tool designed to grab deleted files from either the SD card or internal storage of your Android phone. It supports the FAT file system, and offers the ability to scan the media for specific files types, including audio, video, images etc.
Total Commander -
Total Commander is a feature packed dual-pane file manager for Android, based off of the popular Windows file manager of the same name. It really is the only file manager that you’ll ever need. Most of the CM7 roms come cooked with it, in case you are using stock this will come in real handy.
Sixaxis Controllerer -
Sixaxis Controller allows you to connect a PS3 controller to your mini, giving you the ability to have a full gaming experience on your handset. You grab Sixaxis Controller form the Market for $1.62.
Wireless Tether -
Wireless Tether remains the best way to utilize your mini as a WiFi or Bluetooth (PAN) hotspot. Its free and its open source. Available in playstore. But, it is certainly a battery killer so use it while charging the device.*
Shark For Root -
It’s essentially a stripped down version of WireShark. It’s a particularly geeky app to have, but for developers or those of us obsessed with monitoring where our traffic is going its a great app. Shark monitors all network activity on your device (presumably from all interfaces) and outputs a .pcap file by consrving quite an amount of battery when compared to other apps in the playstore. So use it and know the difference yourself.
adbWireless -
adbWireless does exactly what its name implies, all without the need for a USB cable. There really isn’t much to say as the app is, quite literally, a big red button that you can push to enable/disable wireless ADB connection. There’s also a widget for those times when you’re too lazy to fire up the full application. Its available on the playstore for free.
Move2SD Enabler / Install manager -
Move2SD Enabler or Install manager, allow users to move any app to the SD card. Like adbWireless, it’s as simple as pressing a button. It’s free and both the the apps are available in the playstore. Although scripts like s2e and link2sd etc are there its sometimes convinient to use apps like these.
Market Autoupdate Bulk Toggle -
Another simple yet incredibly useful root-only app:
Market Autoupdate Bulk Toggle. This is an app that takes the Market’s auto-update feature to a whole new level:
Pressing "Autoupdate On" does exactly what you’d expect: it turns on auto-update for all of your installed apps. That’s it – you’ll never have to confront that pesky "Allow automatic updating" option in the Market again. The only caveat is that the program only enables automatic updates for apps that are already installed and won’t apply to those installed in the future – for those, you’ll have to rerun Market Autoupdate Bulk Toggle and press "Autoupdate On" again. Unsurprisingly, you’ll still have to push the "Update" button yourself when an app receives a manual update (which only happens when its permissions change – not a frequent occurrence). Although this feature is present in the playstore, all those who like using the old market this surely comes in handy. It’s free and available on the playstore.
Theft Aware -
Theft Aware, while considerably more complex than the other items on the list, is an Android security app unlike any other. With it, you can remotely track your phone if it gets lost or stolen, wipe it, call it and spy on the thief, and much more. Its free and available on the playstore.
MyBackup -
Pretty much like titanium backup but, if you love backing up your phone’s
data but wish you back all of it up at once, all for free. MyBackup might just
be the perfect app. With it, you can not only back up your apps data before changing ROMs; you can also schedule backups, back up to your SD card, and back up things you never even thought possible, such as contact info, home screens, and SMS/MMS conversations.
This app offers two versions, a free version with nearly all of the functionality, and a paid version for $4.99. The main difference is that the free edition only allows you to save your backups on your SD card, while the premium allows placing them on Rerware’s servers, although I wouldn’t recommend anybody who
values their data to use a random online service.
DroidWall Android Firewall -
It will make sure apps on your phone don’t unnecessarily waste your limited data plan without your knowledge. The app’s main feature is turning off EDGE or 3G or WiFi access for any application, thus allowing you to restrict which apps can access the network. In addition to saving bandwidth, DroidWall can be used for security – just lock down a suspicious app to make sure it doesn’t try to unnecessarily encroach your privacy. As an added bonus, a log of what goes on is included.
Button Savior -
This is an similar to virtual buttons bar app, but with a slightly different and better UI. Button Savior might be worth a look.
Samba Filesharing -
Samba file sharing is the bomb. It turns your phone into an smb server and puts your sd card on your desktop when you’re on a wifi network. It allows you to share files between your mini and pc over WiFi as a Windows shared folder. With this free app, you can wirelessly copy files to/from your Android device via the same drag-and-drop interface you use when your handset is plugged into your computer with a standard USB cable. Even the security freaks have a reason to celebrate –
Samba offers customizable username and password options in addition to letting users choose a Windows workgroup name and a device network (NETBIOS) name.
MarketEnabler -
One of the most frequent excuses for piracy has to be "The app isn’t available in my country" or "Google doesn’t allow paid apps where I live." No longer!
MarketEnabler makes your Android phone believe it’s on another carrier – perhaps even one in another country. For example, a Swede could use this app to access Google Books, which is, by official terms, available exclusively in the US, right ? So use it and let the downloading begin !
SD Maid -
SD Maid frees up space on your phone’s SD card by cleansing it of "corpses in the basement," or unnecessary data left behind by apps no longer installed on your mini. It works with all roms currently on the forums. Use it and know the difference.
AutoKiller Memory Optimizer -
Hate using scripts like V6 supercharger ?
Then is THE app for you.
It tweaks your mini just like the V6, to run smoothly. It kills all the idle process running in the background and saves a lot of battery. You can choose various OOM values for all the apps like foreground, visible, empty etc. Donators are also able to choose alternate presets, enter Chuck Norris mode, and enjoy an ad-free experience. Its available in the playstore for free, worth a try.
zMooth root -
Another on-screen app. You must be wondering, whats wrong with this guy. Well, the only reason is my phone. My buttons are almost gonna fall off. So I pretty much like the apps which have various customizations. So bare with me .
Moving on, this app is on the same bandwidth as Button Savior etc. zMooth relies on webOS-like gestures rather than clunky virtual buttons. To access zMooth, users can start by simply pulling up a blue (default) bar from the bottom of the screen. To go back, they can swipe left; swiping right is pressing the Menu button; and drawing an "up-arrow" will return to homescreen. The $1.19 pro version adds the ability to change the gesture area’s width and colors as well as a "lightning strike" gesture for powering the device on/off.
LCDDensity -
It changes the font of your mini, virtually everything. This is not a resolution changer (lol) , as I have seen many comments in playstore. It simply changes the depth and space of your mini. Using the app is very easy – simply adjust the slider or click on one of the big rectangular buttons to alter the density, then click ‘Apply’ to restart your device and see the changes in effect. Of course, the smaller the font, the harder it is to press onscreen objects; the larger the font, the more screen space goes to waste.
Keyboard Manager -
When it comes to landscape keyboards, it’d be hard to top what HTC has going with Sense UI. If it’s portrait input you’re after, however, Swype is the cream of the crop. So how can you decide ? Should you manually change your input method each and every time you switch orientations, or type exclusively in one

Its a battery calibration app. It wipes all the battery stats/data from your phone and will make your phone ready to produce some fresh new stats. In this way your battery will last longer as it is always recommended to calibrate the battery after flashing a new rom. Its a free app and is available in the playstore.
BusyBox Installer
Did you ever feel, where can I get a old version of busybox ? This is a common query while using the V6 Supercharger, since it recommends a busybox 1.18.2 or higher version. So ever come across an app that requires an older version of busybox ? Then this is right app to turn for. Its a free app and many versions are available in the playstore so, choose wisely
Script Manager
"THE" app for applying "ANY" script for your phone. It can help create terminal widgets for apps that aren't available for that app, by simple taps of the screen. SM widgets is another add-on for this app so you can use its full power.

Then this is your go to app. Its a one-click tethering app for your mini so that you can use it to browse on your laptop or desktop. Its a free app available in the playstore.
ScreenShot UX
A screenshot app that has all the cool features like shake to capture your screen. Its fully functional trial is available in the playstore. Use it and feel the app before investing in it
Screenshot ER
Another screenshot app. Its a completely free app in the playstore unlike any other in the playstore. As it is free, there has to be some way to chop our legs. . So that drawback is a 6-sec delay after taking every screenshot. Though if u buy it, you can reduce that delay to 1-sec. Some of its features are, screenshot preview ( various views for previews ) , shake SS, on-screen button, notification capture etc. Use it and the know the difference yourself.

The dev of this app claims it to increase the external memories speed upto 40 times than before. You can set this app to work from boot. If you don't believe me or the dev, just use any of the benchmark tools and see the proof your self. Its a tiny-free app available on the playstore. Do try it

The most complete android system utility app/tool. ) is recommended as a boot-loop MIGHT occur, according to dev. Moving on, this allows you to change fonts. You might be asking, Why root for a puny font changer app ? The answer is, it changes fonts. Yes it changes fonts of virtually anything, even the keyboard you are using right now
. According to the dev, it creates a buck-up of your default font in-case something happens. While removing this app, make sure that you restore setting of your default font. In case you forgot, just restore your nandroid back-up

Root Checker
This tiny-free app DOES NOT REQUIRE ROOT. Then why on the list :O ? As the name implies, it simply checks your su-binary and verifies that your phone is properly rooted or not. So this app is helpful for beginners who rooted their stock recently and lets you check whether you have followed the procedure correctly or not.

Spare Parts
This is a very handy app to have. It currently works only on custom roms and CM7. It a tool to control all your hidden interface changes in your custom rom. Going through setting for even changing even the screenlock can be painful, So this app save that time and energy easily.
It also allows you to change the screen transition type and its speeds, wifi sleep policy, useage statistics etc. Its a free app and is available in the playstore.
SuperSU
Another great app from a great master, none other than our ChanFire himself. After giving us some great apps like CF3D, live demsg and logcat etc, its time to include this great app to the list. Its a replaceable counterpart app for the superuser app by Chainsdd i.e our default superuser permissions granter by applying the standard procedure. So installing this app simply replaces you current/default permissions granter. Try it and as always perform a back-up of your apps and data. Its a free app and is available in the playstore.
Swapper
It lets you create, add and manage swap memory file without a swap partition on SD card. Reconfigure the app if you changed your swap size. This tiny app is free and its available in the playstore.
DroidTweaker Root
A small All-in-one app for your rooted mini. It also can mount the system partition as read-write for development purposes and also can clear dalvik cache directly by the tap of a button. Its presently in beta stage but its working fine for me. This tiny app is free and its available in the playstore.
AdAway
Its an app similar to ad-free. It uses leeches to prevent ads from being downloaded while browsing on your mini. Once you install this app and update the host files, you are ready to go for a ad-free experience on any app or browser. It even removes the ads from app that come with those annoying ads, this ultimately improves the performance of the game.
OTA Root Keeper
Want to " TEMPORARILY UN-ROOT " your device so that you can test some new app or tweak or get access to some stupid website ?? Then this is the right app for you. This app is created by the devs of Voodoo Sound specifically for galaxy s,s2 etc. It creates a back-up of your su-binary before temporarily un-rooting the device. It needs an ext-2, 3 or 4 partition for working. This tiny app is available in the playstore for free.
BuildProp Editor
As the name says, it an app to change and modify the build.prop for tweaking your phone. This is a good app to have for devs who like playing with OOM values. If you don't know what is build.prop file, then you should possibly leave this app let alone download.
It also has recommended values, keyboard layout and comes with a proper explanation. Before playing with the file, the app creates a backu-up of your current build.prop file in case you forget. So even if you are not satisfied with your tweak or an error has occured, you can simply replace the back-up easily.

Try installing some of those ****in idiotic supposed-to-be hot korean etc girls wallpaper app from the playstore and see what happens...avast wont even let those ****iin trojan-trackin apps into our device...u can test it urself...nd this app saved my phone twice Coz I lost it..it has the best anti-theft options in the whole playstore...

I read the comments to those apps and felt like testing avast...it worked Coz avast detected that app as a malicious tracking app that can read our contacts and call logs.

[Q] Couple of days in - a couple of Qs...

So after some great help by gregbradley and others, I have a rooted T and now have an OTA 195 update.
However I have a couple of questions (apart from my continued quest to find a way to get the phone to save camera output in less compressed fashion.
1) Is it usual for mediaserver to be the 2nd great drain on battery after the screen and ahead of android system?
(there appear to be many web discussions on this, but I could not find a definitive answer. Mine has always been like this even before I tinkered with it, or before I put the sim in (I didn't put the sim in until after I had rooted and updated. I do not have an SD card in there yet (64Gb on order) and I have not added any new pics or movies to the stock provided ones.
2) Can you change where apps are installed? Can this be changed for Google Play apps (like xda) Is the default to install to "phone memory" rather than "internal storage". Given that "phone memory" is only ~ 2Gb, it would be good to install to "internal storage"
3) Are apps on the home screens (eg Walkman) always running, even when not in use (the walkman example is the app 4x1 icons wide and has basic controls on it)?

1) Anything that needs to scan the sdcards for contents will call on the media server. After a fresh flash many apps will be collating their cache so the mediaserver may have a high battery drain, you should never worry about battery drain untill you have run a ROm for at least 3-4 days to let it settle
2) Yes, use apps such as link2sd or app2sd, free in the market. However I have not yet felt the need to do this with a 16gb internal memory
3) Thos e widgets are just shortcuts, e.g. I have a weather app set to refresh every 2 hours...it will be woring in the background whether or not the homescreen widget is on the homescreen or not.
However, do not worry about task killers, since android 2.1 the best task killer is the one that comes with the OS. The only other exception is if you install init.d scripts and supercharge scripts etc, but you may want to leave that for a bit and get used to the phone first.

So I am on the xda app, much better way to view the site than mobile browser .
However, I cannot see what you wrote when I reply.
But it relates to your last point on making customisations. And not just keyboard which prefers US spellings over UK ones .
I am thinking of tinkering with the OS files as I am very upset with the compression of photos. So I am keen by what you say just below number 3.

Change your keyboard or even better your whole phone to UK in language and keyboard setting and it'll propose BE instead of USE.
Greg is correct, the media server goes nuts the first two to three days after (re)flashing or taking up a device. You can improve the situation by keeping your folder structure clean and neat and trash out left over files, old garbage and file system junk.

As for mediaserver, yes all is quiet now.
Not sure about which system files to delete at this stage, but I sure do keep a neat folder structure for my content.

[Guide] Nook Color Installation Instructions for CM 10.1.2 on SD + V6 (simplified):

This all started with the hell I went through trying to get V6 Supercharger 100% on my NC running 10.1.2 off SD (services.jar patch wasn't working). This is a simplified guide made by an Android newbie for other newbies. I've tried to consolidate everything into simplified instructions and a single post.
Offline, I have everything broken up into 3 folders including all the installation files and source links; very neatly organized - even my technically challenged, significant other could follow these steps...
Everything all zipped up is about 299 MB (see download link below). Simply download and extract that to your Windows PC, then open and follow the readme.txt files.
I'll clean this post up as time allows. This is just my small way of giving back.
Thanks to all the masters here in the XDA community; it's a far reach for us lowly users...

[Guide] Nook Color Installation Instructions for CM 10.1.2 on SD (simplified):
Install the SDFormatter software on Windows.
Insert your USB MicroSD card adapter (with Sandisk Class 4 MicroSD inserted) into your PC.
Format MicroSD with SDFormatter.
Use Win32DiskImager.exe to write the generic-sdcard-v1.3-CM7-9-10-10.1-larger-Rev6.img file to the formatted MicroSD card. Make sure you choose the correct drive letter otherwise you will erase the wrong drive!
Eject the USB MicroSD card/adapter from the PC and reinsert it back into the PC (select "continue without scanning" if prompted by Windows).
Use Windows Explorer and copy both the cm-10.1.2-encore.zip & gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip files to microsd (this installs cyanogenmod android rom & google apps).
Copy both the uAltImg & uAltRam files from the AlternateCWM-SDInstalls-Rev2-v6.0.1.2 directory to the USB MicroSD card/adapter (x:\boot) (this CWM will nandroid backup the SD, wipe dalvik-cache or cache, fix permissions, etc).
From Windows Explorer, right click the drive letter to eject the USB MicroSD card/adapter and then insert it into your Nook Color (while it's powered off).
Turn the Nook Color on and wait for Cyanogenmod to boot. Setup your google account when prompted (wifi connection required).
Hold the power button down and reboot your Nook Color. Enjoy!
Please note:
At this point, you will have a stable version of Android 4.2.2 installed on your Nook Color thanks to the CyanogenMod team & the XDA community. You can stop here but I would recommend installing v6 SuperCharger, the 720p Flash & Video Patch and the Netflix Xposed mod (README 2 & README 3 below).

[Guide] v6 SuperCharger + Service.jar patching Instructions for CM 10.1.2 (simplified):
Note: On Android 4.2 and newer, the "Developer options" are hidden by default. To make it available, go to "Settings" > "About tablet" and tap "Build number" seven times. Then, return to the previous screen to find the developer options.
From the developer options screen, enable "Android debugging" and tap OK on the "Allow USB debugging" dialog when prompted.
From your PC, install the "nookcolor-easyADB.exe" drivers.
After the driver installation is complete, plug your Nook Color into your PC via USB. Do NOT "turn on USB storage" if prompted on your Nook Color.
From your PC, open Windows Explorer and copy the file "v6_supercharger_for_android-update9_rc12-blackdog-63457_fix.sh" (right click > "save link as" to download this file) & the entire "supercharger_starter_kit" directory to My Computer > Portable Devices > NookColor > SD card.
From your Nook Color, open the "Play Store" > search for "SManager" (free), & install it (select browse as root; superuser access - remember this choice forever).
Launch SManager & enable "Mount/system as rw" from advanced options.
From SManager, navigate to /storage/sdcard1/SuperCharger_Starter_Kit/ and run StartMeUp.sh as SU, then follow the prompts to install busybox & sqlite3/zipalign.
Reboot your Nook Color.
Now from smanager, open "v6_supercharger_for_android-update9_rc12-blackdog-63457_fix.sh" and follow prompts but don't reboot, simply press (E) to exit when prompted and proceed to next step.
From your PC, navigate to the "Ultimatic_Jar_Patcher_Tools_RC7_TEST6_ALL_DEX_ALL_OSes_NO_FLASH" directory, right click "ultimatic_jar_patcher_adb.sh", select run as administrator (accept Secure USB debugging notification on Nook Color otherwise it will hang).

[GUIDE] How to install Supercharger V6
[DRIVER PACK] Easy USB ADB Installer for Windows (32/64 bit)
Important Notes:
As of JB 4.2.2, you will have to tap to accept the adb secure usb debugging message that pops up on your Android device, otherwise Ultimatic_Jar_Patcher will hang after you see "daemon started successfully".
Java is required on your PC; you may also need to set your Windows path variable to point to your java installation directory. On Windows 7 x64 add this to Windows environmental settings path variable - ";C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin" (without the quotes but prefixed with a semicolon).
Optionally, you can also download only the Android SDK Tools from here (after extracting the .zip, you only need to run SDK Manager.exe update for Platform-tools), then replace the 3 files in the Ultimatic_Jar_Patcher_Tools directory with the three updated ADB files below (located in the android-sdk-windows\platform-tools dir):
• adb.exe​• AdbWinApi.dll​• AdbWinUsbApi.dll​

Windows 7 ADB USB driver installation & troubleshooting:
Check windows device manager to make sure there aren't any "unknown" or "other" devices showing
You should see the following listed under device manager:
• Android Device > Android Composite ADB Device​• Portable Devices > (two drive letters)​
If you don't see the above devices; try rebooting your PC & Nook Color and connecting to a different USB port on your computer, then disabling & re-enabling "Android debugging" on the NC under "Settings" > "{} Developer options" -
From the Nook Color, go to "Settings" > "Storage" > tap the overflow menu icon (the three small vertical dots located in the top right of the display) > then tap "USB computer connection" > and check "Media device (MTP)", making sure "Mass storage" is unchecked.
Now when connected via USB, the Nook Color should appear under My Computer on Windows as "Nook Color Portable Media Player" and if you double click on that you will see two partitions; one that says "Internal Storage" and the other that says "SD Card".
Lastly, if none of that works, remove the following devices from device manager containing the Hardware ID "2080":
• USB Composite Device​• USB Mass Storage Device​

ADB USB console test:
Click the Windows Start menu, then type "cmd" & press ctrl + enter (without quotes) to open the command prompt with administrator privileges.
Type: "adb devices" (without quotes) and press enter.
You should see the serial # of your Nook Color listed and the word "device" next to that if the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) connection was successful between your PC & NC (if not, make sure your path to adb.exe is correct & that the nook color USB drivers are installed properly).
As of CM 10.1.2 (JB 4.2.2), you will have to tap to accept the ADB secure USB debugging message that pops up automatically on your Nook Color; otherwise the connection will fail.

Nook Color CM 10.1.2 720p Flash & Video Patch download & instructions:
Open the Android Browser on your Nook Color and go to (XDA DDL shortlink): http://goo.gl/Nu8DW
The patch file, libstagefright-omxcodec-patch-for-cm-10.1.0-encore.zip will be saved to the "Download" directory by default. Open "File Manager" and navigate there to verify the download completed successfully.
Power off your Nook Color.
Power on your Nook Color and hold the Nook "U" button down until you see the "Cyanoboot" menu.
Use the minus volume button to scroll down to the "SD Card Alternate" option and press the Nook button again to select that option.
Select "install zip from sdacard".
Select "choose zip from sdcard".
Scroll down and select the "Download" directory (verified in step 2).
Select the libstagefright-omxcodec-patch-for-cm-10.1.0-encore.zip file.
Confirm install by selecting the option "- Yes - libstagefright-omxcodec-patch-for-cm-10.1.0-en" option.
You will see "Install from sdcard complete".
Press and release the Power button once and once again until you see the menu option "reboot system now".
Press the Nook button to select that option and wait for it to reboot. Enjoy!

Netflix Workaround
Netflix Xposed mod here (to download latest version of Netflix from Google Play on your Nook Color).
You can download the older version of Netflix 1.8.1 here directly from the web browser on your Nook Color (no mod required). Note: You must go to Settings > Security > and enable "Unknown sources" first. Then after the download is complete, open "File Manager" on your Nook and navigate to the "Download" directory and click the netflix-1.8.1.apk to install it.

I'm a relative newbie to installing CM, but have good technical skills in Windows.
I installed CM 7.2 Stable when it first came out, and now CM 10.1.2 Stable - I started over from scratch.
I am l-o-v-i-n-g CM 10.1.2 Stable. It has breathed new life into my Nook Color.
I used a 16GB Sandisk Class 4 card (one of the cards recommended by leapinlar), and the install went very smoothly.
I did Readme 1 and Readme 3.
For now I skipped Readme 2 (V6 Supercharger ...). If I find I need it, I will come back and use your instructions.
I also installed leapinlar's "sdboot script", which he recommends in his Guide. It doesn't seem to be included in your instructions.

I'm thrilled you've found the guide I wrote useful and I really appreciate your feedback! Honestly though, I couldn't have accomplished any of it without standing on the shoulders of giants here in the XDA forums.
Thanks for the tip about leapinlar's sdboot script; I'm going to give that a shot! I really like the idea of being able to update CM more easily from SD without having to connect to a PC first.
I wonder, would it be possible to flash completely different ROMS using that method? For example, the latest Chameleon OS 4.2.2 ROM looks very interesting... What are your thoughts on that?
I'm using a 16GB Sandisk C4 MicroSD in my Nook Color too. Supposedly, the V6 Supercharger script makes a substantial difference and it also has a SD Speed tweak option; I've set mine for 2048 based on what I've read but couldn't find any posts on V6 SuperCharger settings specifically optimized for the NC running off SD.
I was able to add a SManager widget to the home screen for V6 by bringing up the app drawer from the launcher and selecting it from one of the many widgets screens. I noticed it takes a few minutes after rebooting for the V6 boot scripts to run, otherwise V6 Supercharger will only report 50% supercharged when running the widget instead of 100%. This was driving me crazy for a bit because I thought it wasn't working when it fact it was; just a bit delayed...
Is there any specific reason you haven't installed V6 SuperCharger yet? I have read some reports of the placebo effect in regards and to be honest, I haven't tried stock CM 10.1.2 enough to know the difference with or without it. It was initially a real pain to setup on CM 10.1.2 / JB 4.2.2 (in CM 7.2 it was easy) but I have included the latest ADB files in my attached 299MB download so running the ultimatic_jar_patcher_adb.sh (in Step 11 of README 2) should work just fine without having to download the Android SDK and all that jazz...
Would anyone running V6 SuperCharger on their NC care to chime in what the optimal Minfree & SD speed tweak values are?

Consider: Regarding "Settings > {} Developer options" (above), you might want to include the following (or similar) wording.
Note: On Android 4.2 and newer, Developer options is hidden by default. To make it available, go to Settings > About tablet and tap Build number seven times. Return to the previous screen to find Developer options.

Out of curiosity, what kind of battery life are you getting on your Nook Color running CM 10.1.2? For example, how many hours do you get while it's awake, with the screen on and WiFi enabled, vs. when it's in deep sleep?
Something is draining my NC if I put it to sleep with WiFi enabled.
For example, looking at "Partial Wakelocks"; "WeatherUpdateService" seems to be hogging up a lot of my battery...

I am having a similar battery draining issue. I installed BBS (thanks for link), next I need to read up on how to use it.
In an attempt to minimize things that use the battery I have done this...
o I may experiment with this setting, but am probably more comfortable with using default here. I'm concerned that frequent connects/disconnects from the router might be problematic, especially if you do not have a static IP address assigned to your device in the router.
Settings > Wireless & Networks > Wi-Fi > Advanced. Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep: Only when plugged in (def=Always).
o Settings > Interface > Launcher. Homescreen. Disable Show Outlines. This has nothing to do with battery, but looks better to me.
o Settings > Interface > Lock screen. Screen Security. Disable Vibrate.
o Settings > Interface > Lock screen (or System). Clock widget. Disable Weather panel. Otherwise, since I keep location access off most of the time, weather is reported as a question mark which is ugly.
o Settings > Device > Sound. Disable these: Touch sounds, Screen lock sound, Volume Adj sound, Volume rocker music controls.
o Settings > Personal > Location access. Access to my location: Off. If I am going to run something that needs location, I will first temporarily turn this On.
o Settings > Personal > Language & input. Disable Google voice typing. Not needed since Nook Color doesn't have a microphone.
o Settings > Personal > Language & input. Voice Search: Disable all related items.
o Settings > Accounts > Email > Account settings > [email protected]. Inbox check frequency: Everyday (vs.Every X min).
o Settings > Accounts > Google. Uncheck Sync for App Data, Browser, Calendar, Contacts, People - I don't use these. I left Sync for Drive checked.
Web history: Off; Personal results: Off
o Settings > Accounts > Outlook.com > Account setting. Sync settings. Enable push: Disable. Frequency: manually.
o I Disabled automatic updating for most Apps. To do this, open Play Store app. Click down arrow. Do the following for each app you want to change.
In left column, click on the app. In right column, uncheck "Allow automatic updating" box.
Tip. If you are in portrait mode, you need to switch to landscape mode, otherwise you will not see this box.
With the above settings I am getting about 10-13% battery drain per hour with some light usage.
During the following tests there was no user activity.
Test #1. Over a 12 hr period, with WiFi on, I lost about 9% drop in battery power.
Test #2. Over a 12 hr period, with WiFi off (vs turning Airport mode on), I lost about 4% in battery power.
Test #3. Over a 12 hr period, with Airport mode on (vs WiFi only off), I lost about 2% in battery power.
CONCLUSION 1: In the Guide linked below, I read that it is more affective to turn Airport mode on than to turn WiFi off, and Test #2 and Test #3 above definitely support this.
CONCLUSION 2: It appears that when WiFi is on, something is preventing my device from deep sleep. I am using BBS to try to understand/minimize/resolve this issue.

Thanks for sharing your battery saving tips; especially the link on the XDA Wakelock guide; I'm digging through it now!
I also have turned off "Location access". How did you set yours to "Enabled only when needed"?
Also how did you remove the google voice search / services?
Apparently there's no way to remove the Google search widget from the home screen without switching launchers. I would like to just disable the microphone icon / feature altogether but that doesn't seem like an option.
I went to settings > language & input > keyboard & input methods and disabled "google voice typing".
Then I went to Settings > Apps > All and scrolled down to "com.google.android.voicesearch". From there I tapped "Clear data" and then "disable".
I see what you mean by airplane mode; I tried that initially and figured I didn't need it after changing the advanced wifi sleep option but it seems most apps play nicer with it on regarding sync.
For example, BBS shows WeatherUpdateService (com.cyanogenmod.lockclock.clock) with a partial wakelock of over 1.5 hours (out of 9 hours)! Do you have that issue on your NC?

These settings made a huge difference in battery drain during deep sleep on my NC:
Set Wi-Fi to automatically turn off during sleep:
Under Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced -
Uncheck "network notification"
Set "Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep" to "only when plugged in"
Check "Wi-Fi optimization"
Change home screen clock widget update from 15 mins (default) to every 8 hours:
Under Settings > Lock screen (or System) > Clock widget > Weather panel -
Set "Update interval" to "8 hours"
Check "Use custom location" (I entered my City & State manually here)
Google Account sync set to manual:
Settings > Accounts > Google > Uncheck Sync for App Data, Browser, Calendar, Contacts, Gmail and People details (recheck & uncheck to manually sync from here).
Note: You can also sync Google services, such as contacts and calendars, in their own dedicated apps. You can also sync Gmail manually from your inbox by pressing "Menu", then "Refresh."

Of course, screen brightness and processor utilization are two major factors.
Under Settings > Performance > Processor, I have Minimum CPU set for 300 MHz & Maximum CPU set for 800 MHz with "Set on boot" checked.
I'm still monitoring the battery drain; especially while awake as there appears to be something hogging my battery. I suspect WiFi and/or certain applications that I'm using over the LAN/WAN to be the cause.

You can try this... o Settings > Interface > Launcher. Homescreen. Disable Search Bar. This will remove the left sidebar where Google search icon and microphone icon are normally displayed. I also like to Disable Show Outlines, it looks better to me. The screen looks a little bare to me without the left sidebar, so I added it back. There doesn't seem to be a way to use the space for anything else, unless I'm missing something.

Yes, this is a good setting. I'm so glad to have learned about it. Over a 12 hour period (with device left untouched) I experienced a 4% battery loss with WiFi off, vs. a 2% battery loss with Airplane mode on. So, a 50% difference in favor of using Airplane mode.

No I don't have that, probably because I disabled location services, and removed weather panel from my lock screen and my homepage.
Thank you for sharing your settings and resource list. I think the Wi-Fi setting was an especially good find! Seems like it should help. I added it.

Hello, when using the SD formatted suggested, it shrunk my Sandisk microSDHC 16gb Class 6 available data max from 14.GB to 247MB, which makes it impossible to install all the files needed to upgrade. Any help with fixing this problem or do I have to go and get a new microSD?

Yes, and that is the problem. I am simply trying to do as the directions say, but there doesn't seem to be enough room. I downloaded the required files via the hyperlinks, so perhaps they aren't the right files? Perhaps I am installing the gaaps and encore to the wrong part of the SD (tried to install all files to SD when it was now called "boot," though the directions say to simply install the alt)?

You don't say what the files are or how large they are. Try doing just the rom and flash that followed by doing the gapps next. They must be really large to exceed 247MB.
Edit: I see what is wrong here. You are trying to put too many files on the SD. You should only be putting the CM zip and gapps on there, not the whole content of the 299MB zip.
BTW, the author copied a lot of these instructions and files from my original SD installation thread without giving me much credit other than linking my original posts. He did add the V6 supercharger installation instructions which my thread does not have. Go to my thread linked in my signature for the original SD instructions.

Your version of installation seems to have rectified the problem, thank you! The problem I have been trying to fix by this update still persists, though. Whenever I try to use anything Google-based, the program simply crashes instantly. Play, Gmail and whatnot are all affected. When I open up running apps, it shows they are still active, yet they just quit again if I try to open them. Oh well, one problem at a time, I suppose. Thank you again!

I have followed the instructions to a t and my nook color just boots normally. I am using a 2gb sd formated with rom and gapps on it as well as the other 2 files and when I boot the nook with sd installed it never boots cm?

Following these simplified instructions is sometimes not enough.
Sometimes it is difficult to make a bootable SD so that it will actually boot in a Nook Color. See my Nook Color Tips thread linked in my signature and read item A9 for some ideas.

Writing the image seemed to go fine. But when I reinserted the USB MicroSD card/adapter back into the PC, it does not recognize it. It cannot see it as a drive. Now I cannot even reformat the MicroSD card and start over.
Any ideas?

Assuming you're talking about in windows... go into Administrative Tools... Computer Management... Storage... Disk Management and see if the drive is listed there with no drive letter assigned. If it is... select the first partition... right click... change drive letter and assign a drive letter for it.

Converting TAB A SM-T280 to a SAMSUNG J500f

Hi everyone one... I am looking forward to making my SM-T280 have a wee better features.
Have modded it with some extra features, but find peeps here are lazy, sor I will be accessing Russian help with a real firmware upgrade for such a great tablet. Will post more info soon.

Major change up
Seems that while waiting, I came up with a simple system file updates from three devices. Sinice the J1 is more compatible to the Table A 7.0 I spoofed the J1 build.prop settings to make Chrome layout look better, whIle system is forced in landscape mode. I also transfered over some system files, which were univereal that were not included in the basic 7.0 tablet.
So far, I have updated my bluetooth profiles and additional automobile connectivity presets, while updating wifi firmware from latest J3 phone firmware running LP. I also included a few J5 additions as well.
Now my tablet is being long term always on tested for stability.
Here is a list of added or enabled features that is on my Tab A 7.0.
FM Radio with recording
Full featured All share services
Samsung Video player with DNLA and pop out play functions
Screen Cast
Car mode with link functionality
Updated bluetooth profiles
Updated settings and system options... which I now forget what was missing, as I am now use to them.
Added missing frameworks and lib files.
Now working on a few lib files for virtual display and quick connect functionality.
An added note... wifi speeds and connectivity are much better now. Before updates I got 33mbps and delayed connections to my home network, now I get 38mbps and a fast connection when turned on.

Will do... though it's been a wild ride with roller coaster events leaving me just about to kick the efforts all out the door.
Excuse the bad typing... explained at the bottom of this reply.
First of... 5.1.1 is an odd animal to get use to from 4.4 and 7.1 variants of android.
I did not realize that 5.1.1 was an abortion in the community efforts to mod and support. Most of the info I grabbed as I started was too outdated and hard to find good stuff was lost over time, server cleanup and lack of dev file space for continuing on for future builds.
So, after dumping xposed for 5.1.1 and going odex based stock, I am satisfied with hown far I have gotten.
Example... with xposed I was able to get private mode to function but... had not much reserved memory available in root storage. Even though the specs given on theach T280 state 1.5MB, which is wrong... it has plenty of room to hold more apk and .so files.
To keep speed and allow for optimum system storage use, I gave up xposed and dived into mixing 10 different stock firmwares from Samsung.
Here is a small list of known working stock firmwares, that allow transplanting apks and mostly library files over to our devices. J1, J2, J3, A3, A5, Note4, Tab S, Tab A series... both 2015 and 2016 models.
I found some custom ROMs that were odex and deodex factory firmwares, that had no disclaimer on useage.
To get missing quick settings features, I had kept an old SQL editor to patch the system db with all the useful toggles and removal of unnecessary ones.
Mirror link 100% functional, and 98% of all Accessibility features are available and operational. Finger Spen in all apps that support spen. Yes, that means the internal photo studio editor that plugs into gallery will fully function. Though I miss the 4.4 version on kitkat, as the later versions are simplified in options, like adding notes behind photos and quick file management features. WFD, Nearby, Ultra Power Saving, Side Key Panel, Full featured multi windows. Backdrop, Smart Face and Signature lock, Smart Cover, and Universal Switch are unlocked and functional.
Care Mode is 50% functional, as the tablet is not a phone, so Maps and Music are fully functional only. Bonus! Voice link via S6 S Voice. It's fully functional with out any issues that I can tell. The only issue is screen DPI to launch S Voice directly from the launcher. Found that the drawing function dumps when hour glass is extracted for screen write. I guess a simple resizing of the images within the apk will correct the FC. I am not a developer and do not mod apk files, even though from what I gather, is one of the simplist mods one can in customizations.
Since Drive Link is a UI to S Voice internals, just use Drive link to do most all of your S Voice needs. No modifications nended to S Voice apk.
Also Voice Wake is part of the package... which allows interaction between Drive Link on voice commands. Without it, you need to touch the mic to wake up S Voice when using Drive Link.
At this time... I need to find a proper WithTV package (note 4 has issues), a proper display.so lib, a way to enable gestures... I had it going in xposed with a few unknown files lost when over written while testing. Don't recall what rom I extracted from, so some day I may stumble upon it once again. I vaguely recall, the ROM was based from India, or TW. May have to look into touchwiz framework patch to get Smart Stay, Smart Pause and Smart Scroll functioning. It's not a priority as I never used them, and don't use S Browser.
SNote should work, since finger input for spen functions. Only if a developer would make an app to enable finger input as air touch enable. Example... double tap spen detatch/attach toggle. Then I can add Spen SDK and permissions to use my finger for Spen features. I had tested with stock settings menu, and it does have over 50% of the features hidden and S Pen is one of them, just no switch to detect input.
As for private mode... from what I gather, it may be that I need to flash my tablet with a clean fresh factory build and patch to enable private mode firstly. In my mad attempts to keep storage space from being consumed by uneccessary files, I recall deleting an odd file that happened to be a database file created by Private Mode. Once deleted private mode will no longer function. A factory wipe may recover, but in my case there is something changed that needed a full wipe and clean install.
I was not so keen with the Tab A setup UI, so I tested with various Phone models, the A5 and A3 setup UI is like stock but has a slightly better layout and added features that stock does not have.
I did not bother to try enabling Internet Calling and Messaging. Mostly because the last time a developer tried to do something like that, they ended up not being able to compile a working mod. So its all beyond me on diving into such a thing. There is more than just adding a dialer interface.
Well that's pretty much all I can recall in a nutshell. I am going to mess with correcting the Samsung keyboard issues from one of the framework files I am using. Its locked my popup symbols for multiple entry, which would be nice if I had a use for that feature. I have to tap away from the symold list to close the list and then type. Also even more annoying is the spelling and auto correct has greatly became touchy. It seems it wants to correct incorrectly on even the simplest words. Thus my writing looks bad, especially on long paragraphs like on this reply.

Quick update.... disabled chrome spell check and found Samsung keyboard easier to manage on spellchecking... though there is some issues still, so I will dive further.
Removed gesture service, since it requires light sensor, and included spen SDK for SNote to load, and talkback to allow voice interaction in accessibility features. Will try and fit in SNote and Voice Note, as the stock firmware is missing key lib files.
Sticking with A3 / A5 Settings2.apk as it is best all around.
Working on Qconnect, S6 Toolbar, and Personal mode.
Will not fix S6_SVoice.zip for direct useage, as it is only for drive link voice operation only. You can use a S4 SVoice as an option for direct useage. But not installed together. Both SVoice and TTS are huge installs, but a lot less than using all Google. Apps. In fact maps and Google play storeally and services are the only Google Apps I have outside of Chrome.

Ok, I got some of the keyboard spellchecking issues sorted out. Installed the latest open gapps, just to remove most of the Google updates stored on data/apps. Doing so cleans up space and removes some issues with conflicting .so files and apks. Found Chrome was in need of removal on its updates, and I manually copied it into system app folder for the system to make it into a system load when rebooted. Then Uninstalled the update that was chrome left in data/app folder.

No go apps that will not be added... QuickConnect, S6 Toolbox, Smart Stay, Smart Pause, Smart Scroll, Private Mode, and Air Gesture. I gather framework will need adjusted, and systemui may have QuickConnect and Toolbox presets with disabled pointers to launch them.
I may try a few systemui for other devices, like I have with settings2.
Considering how much of the Samsung features I unlocked and added, the only feature I will miss and is worth the effort to attempt further, is QuickConnect. It is a pretty snazzy tool with some interesting features that make it a go to for sharing and connectivity.

When I create a twrp backup of my competed system, it can be restored over existing installation. A dirty flash if you so call it. Just wipe cache before rebooting. It will take about 10 minutea or more, depending on what has been installed.
You can remove some none stock apps as you see fit, as they are for ease of maintenance when flashing clean.
I added a few things to make the tablet more useful for my own use. One is S5 video player. Mainly because it is full featured, allowing pop out video, and built in DLNA to stream from my router media storage and TV box.
If some videos are not compatible, I use aDLNA to launch MX Player for decode that is not compatible to my hardware.
I kept the stock video player, so the additional S5 video player may be removed if one chooses.
One issue is the buttons in S5 Video are not dpi proper on the layout. So black boxes are shown without any context. You can play around to memorize what black box does what, or I'd you are familiar enough with phone style video player pretty 2016, it should not be so difficult.
I debloated the system as much as I could, though many call removing system files that are not required for operation as debloating. Debloating is removing memory consuming apps, not system needed apps. Most all Google Apps are heavy bloaters, in generating cache and data, let alone are bloated within themselves. I tend to stay away from multi platform apks. Especially when there is no need to have ARM8a compatibility in a ARM7 environment. Either figurethane out that Google or stop with your fake and loosely based facts on your betterment of newer platforms. Geezo, my 4.4.2 tablet uses less storage than 5.1.1. And yet it was stated that newer Android is smaller and more efficient. Right? BS... the true facts are right here in my hands
Enough rants... here are the facts. System partition has about 60MB free. Why leave over 500MB free and unused as empty storage? So now you have a maximized system storage for system apps that normally don't get updated. Leaving the updated or user installed apps to use internal or external storage.
Proof it will not cause issues, some custom ROMs will down size system partitions from 3GB to 1GB depending on how minimal the firmware foot print is. So instead of remapping the system partition, I just moved apps into the system.
I have about 900MB free on internal storage running a bunch of streaming apps and CoPilot. The biggest resource hogsite are Google play services, play store, and Samsung TTS with SVoice. Using Google TTS and Voice would greatly consume more valueable storage space.
The 16GB card is my backups and work space for rom stripping. I use a 64GB card for media and apps. There is a script to make External SD into Internal sdcard, so the storage is like what you would have with newer firmwares. Though it is not encrypted, but can be shared between other devices.
So I placed all the installed apps that are not or will never be updated in the system/app folder. Thus increasing my internal storage space by 60MB and more.

After a bit of testing, I found that Knox will keep private mode from functioning. So, some how during my tests, I must have finished my transfering system files after a fresh restore of stock firmware recovery. Thus a partially functioning personal mode. To me kids mode works fine, so if i shoud need to share, to someone who i dont trust with private data, i can give them kids mode all setup for them to never ask again. mwhahahaha! On the lighter side, you can just setup the guest profile and lockout photo apps and such.
tested my apps to sd script. all apps now allow moving to sd, as expected. YAY!
I released enough internal (sdcard) for 1.2gb free with curent unmoved apps installed. May balance it out further, if needed. Dont have much room to test with as my 64GB sd card has 54GB of music and another 8GB in other files. Will need to invest in a 128GB sd card for that.
Tweaked the build prop for faster responce... just a few wee edits actually. One is stupid simple, yet never seen anyone do it on small ram devices. will add a final additional set of tweaks for small enahancements.
This tablet is actually faster than the Note 8.0 it is replacing, though it is slower on cpu speed, and is not overclocked with a custom Boefla kernel.
still working on a small set of bugs... probably from my data from installs and configurations. Once I clear the internal data, it may recover properly, but i rather identify the issue, as I expect the restore file to be flashed dirty.
Gave up on testing systemUI swaps. Seems like samsung has made non adjustable ui schema on their platforms. I cant even drop or increase dpi on this tablet without breaking ui.
One thing i did like about A3 ui was its noticable zoom out feature with the lock screen image, and has different background, like the S5 phone.
Outside of that, once unlocked boom! Back to lockscreen with a ui crash.
Found one issue with A3/A5 settings... it has a different mapping for a sub menu item. Closes out, without allowing a setting. Seems like phone and tablets are perposely done so component features cannot be shared beteen them. Signature lock will show as an option but impossible to enable. To use face lock i must use a tab4 settings. It would be nice to combine all the features on the A3 settings ui to the tab4 setting ui, as it would alow so much more versatility. The tab 4 settings has audio pointing to a different audio schema which fc the setting ui once selected, since the devices do not share the same hardware. Also the motion section does it as well.
Most all the features are good between the two on our tablet. Not going back to original settings as it seems so limited.

Slowly making headway...
Found some nice mic and audio drivers... for the life of me, i thought it was cheap hardware making a bit of digital noise with stock system files and any oem or downloadable audio recorder. I went a head and scoured through build dates on stock driver files to find similarities with tab a stock, and any differences.
Because I only use the tab a to do file and os tests, as its the only thing i have, i cant keep backups or libraries of firmwares to gather what i need. Its mostly download search sort and copy what i need. Then delete and download another rom.
Out side of mystery system files, to patch the latest release for the 7.0 tab a6, i am pain stakingly playing with floating logcat, while launching and running apps.
Decided to remove some apks that i use for tools, and do some cleanup for a clean system build backup. It leaves around 400MB free for what ever you want to add to the system.
Found a nice option to try... once i do a backup, is to run virtual exposed. I dont like the modded xposed for samsung odex. It seems slow and a wee buggy.
I rooted this build with a passive kernel and the latest magisk.
I hope to have virtual xposed operational on this build as there are so many xposed modules available.
I did include the tools i use.. fake gps, os monitor, logcat extreme, termux, and csc features for samsung.
Still trying to sort out sip symbols staying active when more than one is listed, after initial touch on the symbol.
Voice note is also having one issue... will not type out words spoken when doing voice note dictation. I assume i am missing some system files outside of the lib folder location.
Will have to search for the proper firmware and find what differences are in the file structure and in vendor.
Have added smart selfie alarm for camera, and additional stylized images for bonus material.
As another bonus i included control screen, to keep the screen orientation proper on difficult apps. It has an option to stay in the notification pull down panel, and fits nicely. Just turn off samsung auto screen rotation before enabling the app.

One down two to go!
I found an Svoice that is fully functional on our tab a6 models. So, consider another bonus in the round of fixing wee issues.
This one allows the change of the wakeup command. It seems to work with any command you want to make it. Problem is if you bypass the initial setup, it defaults to Hi Galaxy. I think clearing out all the Svoice apks data and cache will allow changing the command, if you need to.
Still working on Voice Note not typing out text from voice input, and sip symbol key list staying on after initial touch.
It may be from a hidden accesibility function that is available with various setup ui apks.
Like there is another type of unlock scheme on some phones and th J3 version i am using. It very much like pattern unlock but more simpler. Also it can be setup to show direction, or not to show direction, to keep the lock screen blank. Also read out loud to where your direction has been entered.

Down to one last issue to correct
I figured out the main reason why voice note in the voice recorder fails to type out text during voice recording. The tab a6 does not have a proper audio mux and lpcm setup. I tried to configure media by seeing what can be done to add paths. I am not familiar with paths enough to compare and cross reference unknown values to replace from a different schema.
So, until someone who is following can do a proper patch to the media xml files in exec folder, the function will never happen.
I checked with SNote and it does allow all the importing functions, including video from rear camera.
While trying out the patch on my own, I did bump up the recording quality on the video encoding. At least i got something done out of the deal.
I also gave up on virtualxposed. I dont care to run a shell based setup, and most of the xposed modules i use do not play well with the shell.
So, it looks like i will devote my time into isolating the troubles with sip symbol shortcut overlay not clearing from the keyboard after initial symbol touch. It will clear on just a single symbol being shown, or if you touch away from the pop up symbol set.
One thing i did do is clear keyboard data and cache. I may have to reset the csc features xml additions i had set. I have other ideas, but i will tackle the simplest first.
I hope to post my dirty flash mod for peeps with the latest firmware to use on their Tab A6 7.0 tablets.
Since i had very little input on what most want or expect on a modded firmware, i made it for my needs, based on a full Samsung Experience, with minimal google bloat.
I will make a couple of scripts for peeps to run via terminal command or launch from smanager. Since my force installs to external sd card may get in the way of a clean flash with pushing restoration installations.
The scripts will enable or disable force to external sd, and toggle performance mode, and interactive mode (stock default).

Right now I am happy with over-riding system governor to Perfromance and WiFi congestion control to Reno. Both are the only options avaliable from what the kernel was built with.
There is a small battery increase, but mostly noticeable when comparing to low tasks and multi-tasking. Heavy usage and average use, will not show much difference. I have yet to see a reason to revert back.
This is a stock rom with as many features one can have for the hardware and what Samsung made available for cross compatibility. I have included a full featured accessibility package, along with voice and finger generated spen controls. Plus enabled internal editing of videos and photos. Plus I blocked media from scanning system media for images and songs.
There is too much to explain here, but I will try to compile a full list of features that are installed for a Samsung Experience.

Unzip the contents into your existing twrp backup folder. Run twrp to restore the image. Be sure to enable checking to gaurantee proper restore.
This has install to external set, and magisk root with permissive kernel (you may need to enable it with a utility or shell command). Minor tweaks are in build.prop, you can revert to original build.prop by renaming the backup by removal of the bk extension.
This is 98% completed... i have to update a few files and an app, as they were written over, by mistake.
You should have 200mb free in the system partition. Also a small handful of utiltiies that are no more than 25mb total. I removed google bloatware, and a few Samsung apps that are not required, or can be downloaded from Galaxy Apps or Google play.
Many will just say no need to change a thing... but before i post the final image, i will not bother with future maintanence. I'm trying to flash a TWRP recovery image on my T280 using Odin 3.13 and twrp-3.2.3-0-_mone-gtexswifi.tar....but I keep getting a secure boot fail. What did you do to flash TWRP?
