Galaxy S5 Ultimate Water Test! You Will Be Amazed! - Galaxy S 5 General

TechSmartt on Youtube who has already released a couple Galaxy S5 drop test videos decided to put the Galaxy S5's water resistance to the ultimate test.
Not wanting to spoil the video but it involves a pool and a washing machine and pure amazment at the end!

Things like this make me want this phone so much more!

this is why i am getting this, i like my Gs4 but the waterproof is a huge bonus

Truly impressed but I have no need for this feature. I'm happy with S4.

Same here, I was astonished when I saw this. Never would have that kind of waterproof capability. Very cool!

I think its safe to say you can submerge the S5 without any worries.
Im waiting on a salt water test since I plan on taking my phone with me when I go to the ocean and it would be great to use it in the water. I think it should be fine as long as I rinse it off with freshwater afterwards.

They also advise you to not submerge the S5 in water. The only reason I can see why they would not reccomend exposure to salt water is because of the seals potentially deteriorating because of the salt.

And that washing machine test, holy smokes... I live in Florida so having a waterproof phone would be nice.
Salt will be corrosive so washing it after exposure might be okay?

Technology and water, when put together = AMAZING! Can't wait to have this.

Salt water is incredibly corrosive, and submerging in that will degrade the contacts on the headphone jack very fast. So don't go swimming in the ocean with it.

But it isnt going to happen instantly so if I am to immediately rinse with fresh water after the salt water exposure it shouldn't have any effect theoretically.
I wonder if anyone with a Z1 ever exposed it to salt water, it also has an open headphone jack so it should also technically be likely to corrode.

Yea I submerged it right into the bag of rice, for about 40 hours, but still wouldn't turn on. that's when I opened it up and rubbed it down with alcohol. Put it back together and voila

Thanks, I don't do this for a living nor did I follow a guide but it looks a lot more complicated than it is. I actually didn't know about the rubbing alcohol being a solution to water damage, my cousin told me, then i just bought the necessary tools to open it up made sure all excess water was dried, rubbed it down, blow dried it for a few minutes and put it back together.
And the screen wasn't trashed. That's good. Maybe that fused digitizer/LCD combo is a good thing after all
Did you see where the water sensor is?
Yea there are two of them basically within an inch of each other. One to the right of the rear camera in the center of the upper frame and the other just above the battery.
I used bleach and qtips on both stickers and they looked brand new in under a minute. Although if you look carefully you could see wrinkles. Wouldn't be noticeable with lighter water damage .

impressive, it looks like nowadays phones and circuits inside them survive better than the old small brick nokia phones in the past.
My sister washed her samsung corby in the washing machine, put it in rice and turned it back on it still works. Same I did with my Sony point and shoot camera.
For the OP this may be a sign. you should consider buying xperia Z

Oh, don't you start with nokia phones. You could throw one on concrete from 5th floor, then dump it into a glass of water, dry it out, put back together and it still works. Except for power button. But still!

Open a Xperia z to manually dry the speaker?

I was in the beach 2 days ago and I brought my xperia Z along. I decided that it was a good idea to take underwater videos and pictures above the water. They all looked great. The only problem is that, its been two days since that happened and my speaker is still muffled. It usually gets dry in a few hours, this time I'm worried it might have damaged for good. I believe that maybe little grains of sand made their way through the grill and are keeping the sound low or something else. Anyways, just wanted to ask if anyone can advise me on what to do. I had my C6002 since its release and have submerge it in numerous pools but never on a beach. Any help will be appreciated, thanks
Sent from my C6602 using xda premium
I wouldn't recommend open the device, you could lose the water resistance altogether.
My only advice would be letting the device on rice for a while with the flaps open.
Anyway, my take on this subject is this:
I wonder now why everyone thinks that kind of water resistance will make the phone indestructible.
For me, that water resistance (not waterproof) just makes me feel more confident about my device surviving water related accidents.
Just taking the device to the swimming pool defeats its certification (2 m deep pools are not uncommon, you know), splashing, swimming, just moving around under water, or even worst jumping into the water violently just multiplies the pressure around your device by more than those 0.1 bar.

I was at a lake yesterday, used the phone to record under water, take photos, and guess what? It was fully loud each time almost immediately after I got out of the water. This phone hasn't seize to impress. I highly recommend to consider the rice. Often times, naturally aspired solutions are the better choice.

Waterproof test ?

Hi guys,
Well, I am really scared about doing a waterproof test with my XZR.
Some users have reported problems after using it in water, and it seems that Sony does not want to take them under warranty.
How many of us have done this test ? Did you do it repeatedly, in a pool or just one time to test ?
Please let me know.
Thanks.
I did it once in a bowl. It was good, except for the fact that the USB flap started to slowly come out by itself about 5 minutes after I took the phone out of the water. I pressed it in and it was OK after that. I did the test only once. I also used it once in light rain playing Ingress. It was so cool not worrying about rain damage.
Sent from my C5503 using xda app-developers app
I bought this phone mainly for its waterpoof capabilities and so far it has not failed. Two times in the bath and one time in the pool.
IMO if you check all the flaps and the o-ring of the battery are in place and clean, there's no reason to worry. Don't open the rear panel too soon after because some drops will stay for a while where the o-ring doesn't protect. I've seen Sony smartphones survive water damage after the flaps were left open. I think the electronics has a protective nano coating.
Anyway, check your flaps and dive in !
I've taken it into the pool about thirty times. Performed as expected each time. The wet finger tracking is brilliant.
My only peeve is the front camera. Takes terribly grainy pictures underwater. The main camera is awesome underwater.

btw, just thought of it, there are special kind of grease materials for water proofing, some of them are quite sticky, people who have problems with thier flaps loosing up might try to apply some, it could help with the proofing and the sticking it in place.

Will is, won't it, how much drop the S5 can take?
Wow..did not expect the s5 to be rugged..his tests were pretty substantial. So s5 has the best mobile display, one of the best cameras out on a smartphone, the best battery performance in the market, has water resistance, heartbeat and fingerprint sensors..guess this should clear up any doubts people initially had about this phone being just an incremental update to the s4

Not bad. It seems the S5 takes most of the everyday drops well and far better than it's predecessors, anything from human height and you'll be all right, unless landing face down, which still KOs the screen.
BTW, is there an article out there analyzing the likeliness of a face down land? You know, pulling out of pocket and dropping, slipping while taking a photo, someone accidentally knocking out of the hand and dropping from ear... out of 100 drops, do we know roughly how many lands face down?

Does anyone swim with their S5?

So, I just got this s5 and decided to take the water resistancs to a new level.
I first ended up going to Cedar Point Amusement park, and went to the water park with it. Took a few video's with it on the slides, etc. Then went to the Wavepool , kept in my pock so it was no more then a few feet under water at any time.
Worked great, phone was still working. Just an FYI, if you do use it underwater, your signal strength will die, no cell signal underwater guys, I first thought the phone fried, but then relized, that was the issue, and then in a min, 4G was back! (I was freaked when I realized my pebble told me I was not connected.) Played with my Sphero for a bit.
a week later, I was at a festival doing some shooting, I was invited to the pool, with all the drugged up artists ,.. They all thought I was on every drug known to man because I brought my phone in the pool to take pictures (a few under water ones too!)
So far so good. I will admit that the phone at no time was fully submerged for more then 5 or 10 min at a time. but the phone still works great, and just needs a rince and dry to get the touch screen to work nomaly again.

my theory, is if I am going to actualy do long swimming with it, I will put it my waterproof bag, but jumping into the pool for a quick jaunt, playing with my Sphero, or a waterslide where my phone is not UNDER water for more then a few min at a time, I will risk it.
I never keep phones long enough anyways.

Chlorine will destroy your waterproof capabilities.
Also your speaker will get saturated and sound like crap - eventually the phone will have a weak speaker resulting in popping/crackling sounds. Just FYI...You can take pictures and the phone can get wet but if your doing it everyday of summer, bad things could happen. I think the Active can do it better than the reg S 5, but I wont go swimming with it. Maybe take pictures once in a while in the pool.
? Makes No sense to me but hey i dont have a silver spoon in my mouth. Even if i could i woulnt cause its a waist of good hardware. Maybe everyone should be poor once in thier life and would appreciate things more.

It's probably not high enough to break the seal, yes, but your headphone jacks are being exposed to chlorine, as are your speakers. Filtered water at home wouldn't corrode the equipment as fast since... well that's chlorine's job, you're not drinking chlorinated water at home. But yeah, the speakers and headphone jack aren't directly part of the board if I'm correct, instead they are attatched to it (I suck at explaining things, bear with me please) by the looks of it, probably explaining why you can buy the headphone jack and speakers separately as replacement parts instead if the whole board. The reason why the slip is on the charging port is to protect the board, which is in more cases a lot more important than sound equipment. I hope I explained that generally well for no sleep in 36 hours.

and some people take the risk and deal with the consequences. I have taken the phone in the pool, and when I am done, I do clean it off, do I plan on doing it on a regular basis, NO, I only did it because I was thinking, I had 30 days to return this phone if it explodes, so I took the risk, in general, If I ever do plan on going to the pool in the future, I have a waterproof bag that I use.
Now the shower, man, is nice to change the song and see whats playing. but I don't submerge it.
Long story short, I was asking for outcomes, I was not asking if anyone was a spoiled brat, had more money then god, did't care if the phone exploded or whatever, those are just troll answers, I was looking for experiences of people willing to take risks, what their device's outcome was, not their financial outcome.
and about chlorine and the seals, that is a legit concern, just like salt in salt water pools. I did not think of that, and this is why i asked.
Water + electricity = busted ****. Common sense. And when the first battery does explode (not 100% on if the battery will do this) from taking into elements they have no business being in I'm sure someone will jump on some lawsuit even though it was there fault cause we all know water and electricity go so well together.

What? The phone is built to withstand a certain degree of water, hence the iP67 rating, I don't underatand why you are jumping to these astronomically implausible conclusions.
I don't know if you have seen the videos on YouTube but the S5 is highly resistant to water, even more so than the IP67 rating would lead you to believe.
Batteries can explode from various things, sitting too long can cause them to puff up, a direct impact/force can also cause it to explode.
Water+Electricity is bad but telling people their battery will explode if their S5 encounters water is simply doing a disservice to them. There are limits to the S5's water resistance as there are limits to many other things in life, we respect those limits and stay within the designated "safe" boundaries. There is no difference with the S5, respect the limits of the water resistance and continue enjoying the feature.

What? The phone is built to withstand a certain degree of water, hence the iP67 rating, I don't underatand why you are jumping to these astronomically implausible conclusions.

The battery exploding is more or less hypothetical as I said I wasn't a 100% and furthermore like I said water and electricity don't mix. One little flaw in you precious waterproof seals and poof your phones done. I myself have noticed just from charging my phone the USB flap is already loose so no I would not trust submerging my phone in water at any depth. and as for the waterproof rating i would think that applies to things like getting caught in the rain on your phone or dropping it in the toilet and ouickly removing it. Not jumping in a pool or going scuba diving and taking pictures underwater. Purposely Taking your phone into water or any other liquid is just STUPID it's water resistant not watertight or waterproof. Do with your phone what you will I just hate seeing hardware abused even if it is not mine. Sorry if this upsets anyone just my opinion.

The IP67 rating means Ingress Protection, the S5 in this case is 100% Dust proof as it has the highest value on the scale for dust resistance. The 2nd number in which the S5 has a 7 means water resistant at depths of up to 1m for up to 30 minutes, there is only one level above the S5's rating. This rating is given based on standardized testing so assuming you follow the specified limits and make sure your port covers are sealed, you should be fine taking your device with you in up to 1m of water.
Regarding the loosening of the port cover, that is a major point of concern. My port cover is still very tight fitting but I am have been extremely cautious in making sure it stays at 90° from the opening and doesn't bend in any other direction as to not weaken the flap.

Yea the flap is what has me believing it shouldn't be submerged. Say your sitting poolside and drop ur phone in, Yea it's good to have the iP67 rating but just from removing the USB flap to charge i would throw that rating out the window. It's loose
