How do you guys like the HTC One?

I just recently went back to using my amaze (running cm10) and I am about to sell my S3. My 2 choises are:
HTC ONE
Samsung S4
Wanted some feed back from you guys. Do you love the HTC One? Given a chance, would you still buy it over the S4? And do you guys see a community as big as the S4 will be?
While back I went with the Amaze over the S2. I love the phone but hated the fact that the Amaze community is almost non existent. I do not want to go through that again.
Quite honestly I am loving the HTC One

I had been in the same place like you, I owned a S3 before and had to make a choice -> the choice went to the HTC One and I've never been so happy about a decision ^^
- First thing is the quality, the HTC One beats S3 and S4 over 1000 times, the aliminium unibody is so awesome. If you are habitated on using a phone with aluminium body you will never take a plastic phone back to your hand. I was shocked how long I endured having a plastic phone since I now know how good quality feels like
- You will love the beautiful new HTC user interface, much more tidied up, clearer and better design than Samsung's ugly way of UI design (I say ugly because compared to the HTC user interface it is). HTC One offers you a much better experience here
- Other thing is the screensize, I don't about your preferences but I think that 4,7" is the perfect size for any smartphone, for me anything bigger than that is too big and anything smaller too small.
- You never heard such a good sound from speakers of a smartphone...some may argue now with "who needs good speakers anyways if I watch videos or listen to music with headphones on"...yeah right, but I also would like to enjoy stuff loudly without always having headphones on. Two nice Speakers for Stereosound with Beats Audio, you will love the difference
- The design...well beauty is something undefined and dependent on the viewers eye, but I if you made a poll voting about who has the better design than I can predict you which one would win with big advance -> the HTC One. The design of the S4 is nothing new, so unoriginal because it changed only little things compared to the S3, they look almost similar. Compared to the HTC One the S4 looks so boring and cheap. This is also caused by the cheap material, you just see it
- The hardware power: Both have almost same power, just the CPU of the S4 is slightly better, but the rest is almost identical. Awesome CPU and Graphic Power, 2GB Ram, LTE. Due to the equality I would always pick the phone which offers much better quality on the overall package -> So for me the clearly winner is the HTC One

you forgot one important factor....the camera...
how do you compare it to the samsung s3?

Does the lack of Micro SD card and removal battery bother you? Do you have the US version of the phone or international?

Hmm, the S4 camera seems to be slightly better (according to tests), but not that much that it would be a reason to pick the S4 over the HTC One ^^ At least for me

It doesn't bother me. I even didn't buy the 64GB version because the 32GB is enough for me. The non-removable battery isn't a big issue, of course it is more time consuming and harder to change it but when do you need to change a battery? Not that often ^^ Maybe once every 2 years. It will be a bit more expensive to change it but it still can be done.
I guess I have the international version (europe here)

Is it really? How about video recording quality? I wonder if HTC had something high then 4mp, would it had been more awesome?

I guess I like to have back up batteries for those "emergency" moments. How much did you pay, US $ roughly? I would probably go with the 64gb.
How do you feel about the community? Do you think it will grow? CM10 is still struggling to get BT to work correctly on the Amaze even after all this time.
Can you read on it? S4 temping because I could read on it. And does the features on the S4 in anyway sway you towards it like eye tracking scrolling magiga thingy lol humidity sensor and the sort?

I also switched mate. S4 is nice but the One is even nicer.
The quality and design feel alot more premium than the S4's design and the screen is absolutely gorgeous.
Super LCD 3 is waay better then S amoled in my opinion.
Be sure to convert it to Google edition

I had the s4 it was the worst phone I ever touched. From lag to cheap plastic to unoptimized software and Samsung using half of the storage I couldn't deal with it. Switched to an HTC one and never looked back and I am on att.

Battery life is slightly less than S4. The edges will chip with rough use but the metal doesn't bend. You'll feel a performance drop [reduced framerate] when playing graphic intensive games like MC4. S4 is smoother with such games. Again, ever so slightly, but noticeable nevertheless. However, overall smoothness HTC>S4. Camera... it really depends. Check out some of the camera reviews here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2167592. HTC One screen >>> S4. If you're coming from the 16GB S4, you should enjoy the 32GB of space.
And oh oh Boomsound! You should hear the speakers on this thing man. They're on a different level... just amazing!
My verdict... wait for the HTC One Max.

Didnt samsung fix the lag in there latest update? Anyways this phone feels more high end all around, hardware and software wise and also things like the tv remote seem to work better and have cleaner interface

Go to a shop and try the One M7 in your hands and see how you feel, i bought an One M7 over the G4 for the stereo speakers for when i watch a movie and it is glorious, and the screen is so good amazing detail, but i would still like an S4 if i had the money :laugh:

Rooting is very easy ..just unlock bootloader through HTC dev then flasha a custom recovery...simple as that takes three mins...then you probably want to do s off

My honest opinion on the HTC camera,,, with Sense its great in low light, but its nowhere near as good as the 8mp shooter on my missus iPhone on regular old daylight pics, id even say my old Samsung Droid Charge took better pictures..... and once i went Google edition i think its worse again, kinda grainy, why not just convert your S4 into a Google Edition, im seriously thinking about going down that route, camera has been a bit of a letdown for me on the One

there are plenty of sites comparing them both. they will give you much balanced review. and no most of them never gave you a balanced view. just 2 of them did .

The camera, in my opinion, is just fine for 99% of typical usage. If you're gonna print out copies, the One will not be as good... but if you just keep them on your phone to share, text them to other people, or upload them to social media sites, the camera is more than sufficient. The low light performance is a plus as well.
Battery life is pretty damn good in my opinion. I haven't done anything to optimize my battery life, and it lasts me a whole day of medium usage. With some tweaking, people are seeing 5 to 6 hours of screen on time. If you use your phone more than that in a day, it's likely you're in need of a new job or hobby, haha.
Hardware is simply untouchable. The screen is beautiful and converted me from a huge loyalty to Samsung amoled screens. The body of the phone is gorgeous and feels awesome in the hand. The dual front speakers are not just hype... they are truly astounding.
Software was a nice surprise for me. I've always hated Sense, and thought it made phones ugly and sluggish. Sense 5 is neither. Though I use Apex launcher, HTC really impressed me with their refinements of Sense. Like others have said, the phone flies through pretty much everything except intensive gaming.
Overall, in my book, HTC won this round of flagships. They won't sell as many, but it really is a much better phone.

Here's the skinny...
If you are shooting in anything but optimal light get the One. I have been amazed at the quality level with no noise. Sunny day shooting looks great as well but it does have the slightest bit Lower quality compared to the S4

If you happen to live in the US and also happen to have a T-Mobile S4, I will trade with you. Mine is 9.5/10 condition wise. Only reason I don't give it a full 10 is because I've used it. 10/10 for me would be unused.
Anyway, if you want to swap, PM me. It would have to be a T-Mobile S4, though.

They are very different phones in a lot of ways, so there is no one answer as to which is "best". It depends on what you use it for and how you use it.
I went with the One because I liked the look and feel much more. I just don't like plastic phones anymore. Playing with them side by side, I just found the One smoother and faster.
My phone is heavily optimized, but I have no trouble going 36 hours without a charge.
The camera issue is quite polarizing. It depends a great deal on what you use your phone for. If you take photos mostly for texting and social media, the One is superior because of it's better performance across all conditions. If you use it as a replacement for a point-and-shoot camera, or expect to be able to blow up/crop the shots, the 13MP camera on the S4 is a better choice.
This is a very tough phone. I haven't bothered with a case or screen protector, and it still looks out-of-the-box new. My screen does not have a single scratch. CNET threw their test unit out of a moving bus and it survived with no more than a ding on the corner.
You may be able to root the S4 faster, but the locked bootloader on some models has inhibited development. Development on the One could not be more robust--some rom threads see 200-300 posts a day.

So, as an owner of the HTC One i'l give you a honest thought.
FIRST OF ALL - I don't know how much money you have to spend and I'm not going to get into your life, but if I was in your situation I wouldn't recommend buying the HTC One if you have the S4. It doesn't even matter if the One is a bit smoother and has an aluminium body over the s4's plastic body, at the end of the day they are both top android phones with similar specifications. I moved from the old Galaxy S1 to the HTC One, Now its just amazing how different they are I cant even explain, the HTC One is probably the best phone I've seen out there, but at the end of the day? they are just similar, running the same OS and they both are used the same.
So After giving you my opinion let me tell you this:
1. First, the HTC One is definitely the smoothest android phone I've ever seen - including the Galaxy S4. and By the way the phone runs MC4 and whatever game you pick smoothly.
2. the HTC One has the best screen I've seen, comparing to the Iphone 5, the Galaxy S4 and others - its absolutely beautiful and stunning. Moving from the S1 was a shock to me.
3. The camera is pretty good, it has nice pics though I think I would pick the S4's camera - to me its not a big deal.
4. I know its all about opinions, but the HTC one is just the most beautiful phone ever, People see it and stay with their jaws down. The thing is I might be a bit paranoid, of course after paying alot for it, I cant go commando with it so I've put a protector that should protect it the best, so I cant see how nice it looks.
5. Speakers are just crazy, but seriously, who doesn't use their headphones? and If I've talked about the headphones already I must say that the headphones that come with the One sounds amazing using the phone!!!! I never thought that I could hear so good with the phone/heads.
6. Battery Life - I must say that the battery life is amazing for me!! I'm not a heavy user at all, but my Locations and 3G/wifi are on all day long I use facebook, play some games, whatsapp, Internet, waze and the battery won't end! I usually charge the phone every second day.
So after pointing all these out, the htc one is pretty amazing and its stunning, but If I were in your situation I would keep the money and stay with the S4.

[Q] HTC Butterfly S vs HTC One: what else is missing?

I've recently bought an HTC Butterfly S (901s) and I must admit it's a wonderful device.
Having owned an HTC One too, I wanted to have all its good stuff with a bigger screen, bigger battery and expandable storage.
Well, to me the Butterfly S does the magic: it has "almost" everything and more (aluminum unibody design aside of course!)
Well, today I just discovered that something else must be added to the "almost" session: the OIS. I though the Butterfly S had exactly the same camera module the HTC One has, while now I see the OIS is not present. That's a pity, although nothing too dramatic to me, I'd rather have the expandable storage and other stuff.
Anyway, with this post I just wanted to find out other things the Butterfly S misses in respect to the HTC One.
The first thing that comes to my mind is the HAAC mic. I've been searching this info everywhere with no luck (there seems to be very few info about this device!), does any of you know for sure if these kind of mics are missing or they are used into the Butterfly S?
Another hardware diff may be about RAM type: is it LPDDR2 or LPDDR3?

Just try to record some very loud music with your Butterfly S and you will know if it has the HDR mic. I also want to find out about this as that will decide which device to get.

I think the biggest factor is the build - the Butterfly S has a glossy plastic build that's finished like a car paint while the One comes with the famous aluminium body of which the chamfers around the edges are susceptible to dents upon impact. I see a lot of value for the grey variant of the Butterfly S - best looking plastic phone (but that's purely personal opinion). As for the battery life, the One probably has enough for a day for most people but having 3200mAh in the Butterfly S does assure you that you can get through a day regardless of what you do. Whichever the case, I still have not made my purchase yet - still struggling like you. LOL!

I got a vouchers from my telco (StarHub) and will expire on the 1st Sep... so I still do have some time to think. Samsung S4 will be my third choice... their keyboard is not as good as HTC though and heard it lags.
I like the battery factor and expandable storage for Butterfly S. How how how?!

Lucky you, your telco is StarHub. M1's prices are just off putting. And yeah, the battery life is really good, easily can last you the whole day on a single charge.

With the variety of third party keyboards available that performs better than stock and allow u to sync your dictionary across devices, stock keyboards should not be a deciding factor imo.

I currently have the Butterfly S and previously had the One. The One was a wonderful phone and the reason I changed was... well, I got it stolen... So I decided to try the new Butterfly S that was just released.
Both are really nice devices, but if I was to decide which I prefer, I think I like the Butterfly S just because of the larger battery (and the expandable storage a plus). The build quality of the One is much better, but I usually use a case so it's usually not really noticeable. I'm also not too crazy about taking pictures so the missing OIS doesn't bother me too much either. It'll just going to be quicks snaps and if I really wanted to take nice pictures I'll use my professional camera.
It's bulkier and heavier in my pocket, but it's just something I'll have to live with.
Oh a BIG factor for me would be LTE. It supports it here in Asia, but I think it doesn't support LTE in the US? In that case, I think I would consider the One.
Between the GS4 and the One, I think the One is cooler

Yeah using it now in red colour on M1. What I did was to recontract for an iPhone 5, brought it down to mobilesquare, traded in and topped up for the butterfly s. All in all only paid $170, much better than paying the cut throat price of M1's.

I had to think about what OIS was. It's Optical Image Stabilization. I have both the One and Butterfly S and I hadn't noticed a difference. Actually, I took a shot with the S in pretty dim light and it was pretty sharp (although somewhat noisy but on par with the other phones or even better). So I would say it might not matter in real life terms. The camera settings still lets you choose "anti-shake" so I don't know why that is if there is no OIS.
But I'll tell you something funny, I think the S seems to expose the pictures better...
The S doesn't have the physical "wow" of the One when you pick it up, but in most things it is a more practical phone, so I prefer using it right now over the One.

Well, i'm glad i found this thread, as i just bought my HTC One Stealth Black yesterday and since i've already did my homework on which one to buy, compared to the Butterfly S, i wanted to share my views and opinions. By the way, i buy all my devices unlocked (international), so for me, carrier or 4G LTE availability is not an issue.
Butterfly S v/s One
Advantages of using the newer Butterfly S:
- Faster CPU (it's actually the exact same Snapdragon 600 as in the HTC One, but just overclocked and i believe there are apps which allow you to overclock your HTC One to boost it from 1.7 GHz to 1.9 GHz. The GPU stays the same with the Adreno 320 on both devices. On a side note, if HTC had implemented a Snapdragon 800 into the newer Butterfly S, it would have been a different story.)
- Bigger display (it's 5" versus HTC One's 4.7", which isn't a huge difference in my opinion. I've seen both phones side by side and given that you are sacrificing the One's industry-leading PPI record of 468 to Butterfly S's 441, i'd say you're not losing if you go with either one of them. But it's definitely very cool to say that you own the device with the highest PPI until now and probably till the end of 2013. Having a slightly bigger 5" display is not worth singing any praise about, unless you happen to own an Xperia Z Ultra with 6.44" - lol)
- Removable microSD storage (it's a trade-off with respect to the One, as you get half the amount of internal memory, which is faster than external memory and 32 GB is more than enough for the average user - i personally have 25 GB left on my One which i'm trying to fill up with some worthy 1080p movies and games)
- 3 capacitive buttons (versus the One's 2 buttons. OK, i admit i got a gripe with HTC due to this limitation, but then it's not exceptionally annoying and stressful that you can't live without. Double-tap more and get your fingers some exercise or just root and install the feature that enables your HTC logo to become a third capacitive button - problem solved!)
- Bigger battery (This seems to be the most common deciding factor for those considering to buy the best HTC phone (or simply put, the best phone) available right now. HTC One doesn't exhibit any particular weakness with its battery for the average user which lasts a day or more. But for heavy users or people who travel a lot, then the Butterfly S becomes the obvious choice. However, HTC One has a Power Saver mode which works really well, which i thought might be worth mentioning. Also, bigger battery means a beefier device which adds weight to your pocket. If you don't mind the extra weight and really need more juice to keep the lights on, then go for the Butterfly S)
- Gorilla Glass 3 (versus Gorilla Glass 2 on the One. This is not worth factoring into your decision to get either of these devices, as in my honest opinion, the strength of the Gorilla Glass 2 is already excellent by today's standards and Gorilla Glass 3 shatters just as Gorilla 2 in the exact same drop tests. I have yet to see a Gorilla Glass 3 device survive a drop test where a Gorilla Glass 2 device has failed in real life (not the testing done by Corning at the exhibitions where they have a simple piece of their newer glass under pressure from a clamp or dropping a metal ball on it and then tell you that the newer glass is better). Although i have to agree that having the latest glass on your device is always nice and comforting.)
Advantages of using the HTC One:
- Highest display resolution currently available on any smartphone.
- 32 GB internal memory (versus 16 GB on the Butterfly S) which is fastest when copying/loading/installing apps or games or anything else, for that matter.
- Gorgeous aluminium metal build (it gives the HTC One a unique look and feel among all other phones out there, including the plastic Butterfly S)
- Optical Image Stabilization in the One's camera (which is missing from the Butterfly S)
- And i've kept the best reason for last, which really gave me a huge push to go for the HTC One - since you're already on XDA, check out the forums for both of these devices and based on the number of threads and replies, you should easily be able to spot the big difference in developer support. Most importantly, there is the existence of the HTC One Google Edition. There is no (and never will have a) Google Edition for the Butterfly S. Basically, what does that mean? Don't expect anything other than minor updates and bug fixes once 2013 is over as HTC will obviously be backing its new line-up of 2014 flagship smartphones - but if you own an HTC One, you can ditch the stock ROM (by 2014, it'll be outdated when Sense 6.0 comes out and all of 2013's devices are left to run on Sense 5.x) and still stay at the forefront of the Android scene by rooting and installing the official HTC One Google Edition ROM, which works perfectly. There is no waiting time for XDA developers to adapt the GE ROM to your international HTC One. You can basically turn your HTC One with Sense into a 100% working HTC One Google Edition. Even OTA works! The other Google Edition phone (Galaxy S4, shhh) unlike HTC One, cannot benefit from a direct installation of its GE ROM variant (i9505G), as there are differences in hardware which requires an XDA developer to stitch things up and OTA doesn't work so you'll have to wait weeks or months after a new Android version is released before you can install a stable version of the latest pure Android ROM on your S4 (This applies only to the i9505 as the Exynos is a mess with missing drivers, but that's for another topic in another section of the forum).

In my case, the HTC One is definitely the one, since i ended up buying the HTC One over the Butterfly S. The difference in price between these two handsets is negligible considering that you're already going to spend a lot to get either the HTC One or the Butterfly S. But i have exhaustively discussed my point of view in my previous post above, so feel free to disagree if you feel that i was partial to the HTC One in my comparative analysis or if i missed any other important aspect(s) worth mentioning.

[Q] Note 3 / HTC One / Nexus 5

So I happen to have all of these devices right now either in person or on order and am really having trouble deciding which to keep. I use AT&T for all of them. I was wondering, I haven't seen any direct comparisons of these three in particular - so here are the pros of each that I've noted:

Note 3 in particular has massive flaws like all the samsung garbage on it - and I have not yet been able to figure out how to safely mod the stupid AT&T version, which is crap. What are your thoughts on this and which would you stick with?

The Note 3 is easy to remove, so you can get rid of the bloatware. The only thing that sucks is that the bootloader is locked.

This has been hugely frustrating to me. As much as I like the phone it's a feature that's driving me nuts. I've even though about the Lumia 1520 just to get a sick size/quality screen. If only Windows phone was more competent...

The locked bootloader? It's bad, but I've come to like the stock firmware on the phone. There's no law at all, and I just removed the bloatware I don't like with root. J just hope that the bootloader will be unlocked by someone down the road. The battery life and beautiful screen make up for the locked bootloader for me.

This is exactly what I'm struggling with. If I hadn't gotten to taste 4.4 on my One and Nexus 5 I probably wouldn't care as much but I KitKat. To make things worse, I got my brother a Note 3 from Christmas so if I get rid of mine he'll be constantly reminding me of it and shaming me. Might have to stick with it though and I'm sure eventually someone will unlock the Bootloader anyway.

Note 3 is superior of the three right now. Bloatware is removable with Titanium Backup and root. Have multiview, gorilla glass 3, sd card slot (up to 64gb), and removable battery. Only thing wrong with it is, it doesn't feel natural in the hand, or you have to use two hands. Maybe its just me.
HTC One has great sound, yes but thats about it, but most of it seems like a gimmick because you have to enable the beats audio. I had one and had to be very careful with it because the phone was painted with anodized aluminium. Regardless of how careful i was, the screen had one little scratch and the paint chipped off. Sold it two days after I got it. Also, some application lagged for some reason.
Nexus 5 was my choice, because of stock and kitkat, but looking at the flaws made me decide to get a note 3. Flaws were, battery, camera, no sd card slot, no removable battery.
Besides, i mod my note 3 to look exactly like a Neuxs 5 with KitKat, with launchers, icons, fonts, status bar, etc.

Note 3/ HTC One owner. It's a matter of preference and there will be trade offs with any device.
The more lag/stutter free experience - HTC One ( Sense and the One is by far and away the better experience as far as this goes)
Unique software features- Note 3, again by far,over the One and any other phone/phablet
Screen- Toss up, both are exceptional
Build- The One obviously feels sturdy, but I replaced a few of them due to the speakers relentlessly blowing. Still, Samsung puts fake chrome trim on the phones which chips, cracks and dents. The One is better here.
Updates- Both stink. They are trying to make money, plain and simple. That said, neither company will rush to update your phone to the latest and greatest.
Dev support/tinker ability- Samsung and at&t = locked bootloader, this alone is why I just signed with at&t when the Note came out, but will be leaving in a few months. It's unacceptable. One crushes here.
Sound- obviously the One but the speakers are such garbage that I prefer the Note. I use headphones when I wanna hear music anyway
Battery life- The note 3 would win, but there are a lot of people (myself included) that are suffering some sort of wakelock on unrooted notes. Something is crushing my battery and Android OS stays awake 4-5 hours causing my battery to die in 10-11 hours of almost no use. HTC One wins here. It is simply unacceptable to still have apps and bloat causing wakelocks.
Bloat- I was with Sprint on the One so I'll do a combo here. Sprint/One is by far the better choice than Samsung/at&t. Samsung and at&t have forced so much bloat, apps taking up space, things running causing wakelocks..there is just a mess of crap on this phone that does god knows what.
Camera- both are great, both are annoying as well. They take too long to take good pictures. They both have issues focusing at times. When they both work correctly, it's even as far as quality, but Samsung smokes the One in the features category
All that being said. I prefer my Note and sold the HTC One, partly due to the fact that I've rolled with HTC since the Hero but have grown tired of the issues they're having, partly due to the unique software features the Note has. They both have glaring issues. It's a matter of which ones you choose to accept.

All that being said. It's not just Samsung phones that at&t is locking the bootloader on. The one x had a locked bootloader and I'm pretty sure their htc one does as well as it would follow suite

It's funny I should stumble across this thread. I'm looking at my Nexus 5 right now, struggling to find a reason not to send it back. I just switched back to my Note 3 and it has been freezing on me for no reason. And I have seriously been considering buying another HTC One because I really liked that phone and regret selling it.
For me, it's like this:

My current obsession is a phone that takes fast pictures. The Nexus 5 takes so long to focus and has such a slow shutter that every single picture I take of my dogs is blurry (they're always moving). The Note 3 doesn't have this issue and the HTC One snaps super fast photos as well. Also, the burst mode on the Note and One is great, second only to the iPhone 5s, in my opinion.
I have pretty much decided to send my Nexus 5 back to Google. I was set on replacing it with my Note 3, but then I started to get the random freezes and can't seem to pinpoint the cause. The One is looking mighty tempting right now, especially since I can land one in like-new condition for $300. I never had any problems with my One. I just wasn't thrilled by the photo quality (detail) and newer phones came out that caught my attention. I'm starting to think that I was hasty selling it.

Hello, would like some honest advice and opinions please, on whether to keep my new ATT HTC One M8 or get the ATT Galaxy S5 ?
I am no fanboy, I have owned like 11 or 12 different Android phones over the past four years, HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola, etc... To me the company brand doesn't really matter whatsoever. In this order is my opinion on most important features; #1 = Best battery life, #2 = Best screen, #3 = Pocketable and good feel in hand, and weight in pants / shorts, #4 = Root option, to debloat the phone, and install apps like AdAway, and Greenify, and Xposed Framework, #4 = Smoothness of the OS and UI, no lag, and good looking UI.
Little recent phone history the past year, I have had the ATT S4 since the Fall, and before that the Nexus 4. Got rid of the Nexus due to average battery life, and dropped it and cracked the screen. Got the ATT S4, and liked it, but didn't know about the lock bootloader before I bought it, so Root was my only option, but I was cool with that, root allowed me to all I wanted, like delete apps, install root apps, and also Xposed framework with Wanam, and I turned my S4 into a cool phone, but the S4 screen always seemed too dim for outdoors, and battery life was ok, not bad, not great, and it did lag a little here and there. So...time for an upgrade.
Reading every review out there between the new HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5, made them seem like such a tie, it was more personal features that separated them, but hardware wise, both phones share very similar components, and pretty close battery life.
After owning the One M8 for a week now, only noticeable drawbacks coming form an S4, is the weight of the M8 feels much heavier, especially when in the pockets of my pants or coat, it weighs it down noticeably more than the S4 did, and with gym shorts on the M8 feels like a brick, where the S4 was very feather light in comparison. And turning it on, the S4 with the bottom home button, I was so used to pressing then and then swiping hand to turn on the screen. The M8 has knock on, which is ok, but I don't like it that much, and then the power button on top to turn screen on, is a little pain.
But the M8 has a very beautiful LCD screen, and looks great outdoors. The speed of the M8 is crazy fast. And Sense 6 looks really good, almost like stock Android, but lightly improved or touched up. Where as Touchwiz on my S4 was an ugly mess. The settings on the Galaxy S4 was a cluster**** design, where as the Sense 6 settings menu is smart and clean looking.
But I did see a coworker with a new S5, and I did get a little jealous of it, the screen looked pretty dang sweet and his all black S5 phone in a black case, looked stealth bad ass cool The M8 in dark gray, doesn't really have an exact color matching case, so with a case on the M8 it really loose the coolness big time, this M8 looks best naked, as soon as a case it put on it, the great design disappears.
Only thing keeping me back from the S5, is ATT, and no Root, and I know for sure no bootloader unlock coming ever, but at least basic Root I need on a phone. How do you use a phone with all that crapwear installed without removing it ? And I can't afford the $700 to buy an off contract S5, plus I think that's outrageous to pay, I'd just wait for the One+ or Nexus 6 for $399.
So bottom line, is the ATT S5 worth it over the M8, if I like the lighter weight, the home button to turn it on, the gorgeous screen, and stealth look of the black design ? But with no Root, not sure I can live with that ? But then I do love Sense 6, and the ROM'ing I can do on the M8, and battery life has been off the charts good on this M8 with my rooted settings, which battery life is extremely important to me.

I used my brothers M8 for about 2 weeks and have been using the S5 since it has been released in stores. If you are going by appearance alone, the M8 takes the cake. If you need louder speakers, go with the M8. Even tho the S5 doesn't have root, I stay around 5-6hrs of screen time with about 25hrs in between charges. I am a heavy texter, steam pandora during my 1hr car ride each way to/from work and use Facebook a lot. The M8 battery life didn't come close to comparing to the S5. The light weight of the S5 is a huge factor as well. In direct sunlight, the screen on the S5 displays a little better than the M8. The camera on the S5 is better than the M8. I don't use the heartbeat sensor so I find that pretty useless. The double tap to wake feature on the M8 is something that I definitely wish was possible on the S5. A lot of people complain about the fingerprint scanner on the S5, but I haven't experienced them. Being able to disable a lot of the built in apps and services on the S5 has drastically improved the performance; however, it is a little too early to tell its impact on battery life. Not having root is a huge drawback as I like to completely just remove the junk that I don't use and am a flashaholic. Ultimately, it is your choice as to which device would be better for you, but for me the S5 is my device of choice.

I will say, the M8 feels very premium in the hand, and the screen is extremely crisp, bright, and clear looking. My old S4 feels like a kids plastic toy, compared to the luxury feel of the M8. And Sense 6 with the Black / White colors, looks very professional and polished, compared to the butt ugly nasty Touchwiz on my S4.
But I haven't really played with an S5 much, so I am comparing my M8 to S4 which isn't fair.
I just miss the lightweight feel of the S4, with the rounded corners, felt very good in the palm of the hand.

I chose the m8 because of the ability to convert it to Google Play and the fact that the company let's you unlock it. I was a big Samsung fan until the Note 3.
As far as features, I wasn't a big camera person so the decision was a no brainer for me.
This is my first HTC phone and so far it doesn't disappoint. Battery life is amazing (although converted) and the speakers rock. However if it was waterproof that would have been a nice touch.
Either phone is a good choice. Decide what you really want to do with it then use that to choose. For me it was customizability and the speakers.

I have owned a Samsung phone since the first Galaxy came out software on the galaxy is the best in my opinion, even though I don't use all the features I used alot of them, since the s4 with boot loader lock to the s5 it has just soured me on Samsung. So I decided to try HTC and I don't regret it, battery life is amazing and I use it all day, the feel of the metal to me personally feels more premium and the fact that HTC gives you the choice to unlock boot loader is a plus. Camera well I'm not a photographer so a decent camera will do and I'm happy with it. Over all it comes down to personal preference.
And with a slim case my phone didn't lose that nice look and the premium feel.

I think that you're just one of those people that just want whatever is the hottest phone out there, but is that phone the best one for you? There is the best phone, and there is the right phone. I believe that the S5 is the slightly better phone, but based on what you're looking for, I believe that you already have the right phone, maybe not the better one, but the right one for you. If so, then don't let your greed get the best of you. Neither one of these phones are perfect. Let's face it. You're going to be missing something that you really want regardless of which phone you choose.
The M8 has the better look naked, but the S5 has the better looking case? Come on, seriously? Oh well, I guess every little factor matters.
But then again, Your biggest factors:
If you want the better feeling phone, then choose the S5. If you want root, then choose the M8. There is a chance that you will get one of the two factors, but not the other, as there is no guarantee that the S5 will ever get root. So, you should be deciding which is more valuable to you, better feel or root.
The other factors, best battery, best performance, are going to vary based on who you ask because no two phones will be or act exactly alike.

If you're in the US then the M8 and the S5 are two of the best choices right now. I faced your same dilemma. You can't go wrong with either phone, but each one has strengths and weaknesses and some of those weaknesses will never change.
For me I chose the S5, but I wanted the better camera. I wanted the RGB LED notification. I wanted the phone that won an award for best display on a smartphone ever. I'm a bit old-fashioned...I didn't want to go to a phone that had no hardware buttons. I also wanted a removable battery.
For choosing those, I had to give up what the M8 was offering like BoomSound, Sense 6 (I happen to like Sense), the new BlinkFeed everyone seems to like, the nice metal case, unlocked bootloader and root right out of the gate and so on.
There's no perfect phone. You have to find the one whose flaws you're willing to live with. I'm just glad the Xperia Z2 isn't offered by any carriers here or it would have been an even tougher decision!

I personally love the s5 build. The back has good grip and doesn't attract fingerprints. I would assume that it's likely more durable than the m8 based off of the water resistance alone. Speakers on the s5 get the job done. Loudest they were on any sammy device. Only drawback, which was already mentioned, is lack of root. The bloatware is more present than ever and, while I won't flash anything too crazy since I like the stability of TouchWiz, I would like to remove all this bloatware

I currently have both. The GS5 is going back this week. Reason: Lag drives me crazy. It's not a slow phone, but there are slight lags everywhere and they add up. Especially when you compare it side-by-side with the M8. I just can't use a phone like this as my daily driver.
I will say that this phone has the best screen I've ever seen. I thought the M8 was good until I saw the GS5. I also like the way the GS5 feels in my hand more and I don't feel like I need a case to keep from dropping it. I thought I wanted the better camera, but I find that, while better, it's not so much better that I have to keep this device over the M8. And it's slower to launch, which means I miss a lot of shots I can get with my M8.
That being said, the lack of root, locked bootloader, and Knox pretty much kill it for me. My M8 is already rooted with ads blocked and tethering. I also have a Find 7a on the way, so I don't really need all three phones.

One minor thing, I like the look of the black colored S5 with a cool flat black case on it, looks very stealth and bad ass, and the phone sits flat on a desk with a case, easy to still use the phone flat. Where as the M8 is curved, and any case on the M8 immediately kills the great looks of the new One. Keep the M8 if you need root...while a root exploit for the ATT version will likely be found later, there likely really isnt a whole lot of development thats gonna happen for the device. I have both, but I went and bought a TMO outright and sim unlocked it...That said as soon as I can get a 1+ invite, I'm getting rid of the S5.

I currently have the Note 2 ND I'm on tmobile but I like to see the trend that carriers and phones are going. I'm very devoted to the Note line and my next phone is going to be the Note 4. It seems Samsung is OK with carriers locking bootloader. If tmobile does this I will have to move to htc hopefully they develop a good note competitor.

Have you had any issues with the SIM unlock such as the phone loosing the APN, getting MMS, or anything?

Well flip coin. If it comes up heads, then get the phone with the better looking case; tails, the better looking phone naked.
What's the difference? 11 or 12 phones in 4 years? It doesn't matter which phone you already have. You're going to get the other, plus one more in the next year anyway, your 3 phones per year average. I say get the S5 now, since you already have the M8. If you had the S5 first, you would probably be getting the M8 next. You're not going to be completely satisfied anyway regardless of which phone you get.

LOL at the 12 phones in 4 years. I think so ? My first Android phone was the MyTouch 3G, then the Nexus-One, EVO 4G, EVO 3D, Nexus-S 4G, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus, HTC One X, Note 2, Nexus 4, Galaxy S4, and now my HTC One M8, so that would be 12

You're just a phone jumper, admit it. You just like to try different phones. The only reason you're thinking about the S5, is because you haven't got your hands on it yet. If you had the S5 first, then you'd be thinking about the M8.
I wish I had enough money to try 12 phones every 4 years. I'm stuck every 2 years with just 1, the last 10 years.

I had the m8, it was fast but things I did not like
it felt like a slick wet bar of soap, yes a case would resolve this issue and most of use cases..
I hated the camera I take loads of pics with my phones and 4 ultra pixels was just not cutting it..
I like lifeproof cases yet they will sadly not be making them for the HTC M8.. I drop my phone a lot and would like to have a waterproof case..

it is waterproof for short amounts of time up to whatever meters.. another words if i drop in or get a call in the rain or whatever i don't have to worry about getting it wet.
the camera is a load better on the S5
on the S5 you can set up the screen for more sensitivity so if you are wearing gloves you can use your phone ( living in the northeast this is a good thing in cold weather)
lifeproof also has a case for this in the works even though you can get it wet I'd still like a waterproof case..

user interface, well most of us download new launchers and then later on root and unstall a rom so this wont be an issue once root is gained on the AT&T and Verizon models...
those are why I chose the S5 over the M8

I got the S5 almost two weeks ago and loved it. It's fast, has a great screen, great camera and excellent battery life. But for me, having root was the my biggest motivator. It was the main reason I traded my iPhone 5 for an s4 a few months back. I just traded my s5 back in for the m8 and don't regret it a bit, they are both excellent phones and both have their trade offs. If rooting is not a big deal for you then by all means go with the s5(I would have). If you know you will want/need root in the future then the m8 is probably your best bet.

After a week of owning the One M8 I am pretty happy with it, I'd say very happy actually. Not fair, but the comparisons are against my previous phone, the Galaxy S4.
Pros;
- Screen is awesome, very crisp and sharp, with realistic colors, looks extremely detailed. After my S4's AMOLED, this is a refreshing change. Plus outdoors it looks night and day better than the S4 screen.
- Crazy smooth fast. The M8 is Star Trek warp speed fast compared to the S4 which would be current rocket technology fast. Plus TW on the S4 would lag or pause for a second or two in some apps, never get anything like that on the M8.
- Sense 6 is very nice, compared to Touchwiz, it looks more professional, nice Black / White / Blue theme and design to Sense 6, more of a minimalistic look. I still think stock Android is the best, but Sense 6 is a very close second. And Touchwiz is last place of all UI's to me.
- Battery life on the M8 is off the charts AMAZING, I mean like really good, maybe even 50% better then my S4. This thing almost lasts as long as my old Note 2 battery.
- Speakers, I wasn't ever really looking for great speakers in a cell phone before, never thought about it. But wow these are crazy good, loud and very clear sound. YouTube videos and music sound awesome. Really wasn't expecting to like the speakers as much as I do.
- Development friendly, I am rooted, custom Recovery, S-Off, and running a custom stock ROM. And I have the option to install the GPE ROM of the M8, so can always be on the latest Android OS if I want for years now.
Cons;
- Heavy weight, not a fan of the heavier feel of this M8, compared to my old S4 which was feather light. The S4 in gym shorts was barely noticeable, where the M8 feels like a brick.
- Curved back not cool, I like flat backs on a phone, to rest on a desk, and use it while laying down on the table. Can't really do that with the M8. I like a small thin flat case around my phone, not curved.
- Accessories, not nearly as many cases available for the M8, as there are for the iPhone or Galaxy line.
- LED Notification light on the S4 is better, bigger and brighter. The M8 has this tiny little flashing dot hiding inside the speaker grille.
- Not waterproof like the new S5, which would be nice.
Overall I really like this M8, just need to find that right case. But the S5 still looks nice too, but with no root and no ROM's for the S5 that is a big deal for me. I couldn't handle a stock carrier version S5 with no customization or option to debloat it. But the lighter feel, and flat back is ncie for the S5.
At the end of the day there is no perfect phone. I think a combination of the S5 + M8 = perfect phone. Sense 6 + S5 screen + metal design in the shape of the old smaller S4 size + waterproof. Then I woke up
