Trouble sending MMS - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

Not sure if the issue is with the phone/settings, or with AT&T, but I can't send pictures with the stock messenger app. It says "Multimedia messages not supported by network."
Any thoughts?

Did a little digging after I realized I'm also not getting any replies to the SMS I send to people. Apparently, when my phone was activated, my data and messaging plans were deactivated from my S2, but only the data plan made it over to the S5. So I currently have no messaging plan.
What's frustrating about that, I had the "Messaging 200" plan -- 200 texts for $5/month. And I usually only used maybe half of that. Now the only messaging option available is the unlimited for 4 times that price. Not happy to say the least.

I'm interested in this as well. I'm getting a Tilt tomorrow and I'm going to add messaging to the plan but not data.
I read on AT&T's forums that if your phone is setup for data and you have the messaging add-on that you will not be charged data, but I'm not sure how true this is since I haven't tried it yet.
I doubt it... Don't see how you would transmit data without a data plan.

not that I know of... I used nodata.cab and my MMS messages will sit in the outbox until I turn back on the data feature.
Once data is active I can send and recieve the MMS messages...

Do you know if you get charged data usage if you only have a messaging plan?
I've read that since you have the messaging plan that they don't charge data for MMS, but I'm not sure how they can tell the difference between that and internet usage.
I can send/receive MMS and have not data plan, it's $1 for every picture/video message. This works for me as I don't get but 2 MMS' a month, I have an unlimited txt (m2m) w/ 400 to anyone. Since my GF and I txt each other the most I don't get charged for them and have 400 extra to send to anyone else. This costs $5 a month.
My wife and friends can send MMS no problem without data plans. Only problem is if I send to my family in the UK who are on different networks just get a link to a website to read the message.
you dont need a data plan..all you need is the unlimited mms/sms plan..which i have (unlimited mms/sms family plan) and my sister and my mom gets mms pics and they dont have any data plans..i only have the 10mb data plan so i can get my emails, weather, myspace, and other small things

your friend probably caught a glitch... when i had a blackberry i could use the internet on it without a data plan or wifi, but everything else that came with the data plan didn't work.
however, i also didn't know you had to have the data plan for mms to work. i thought this came with the messaging plan? then again i use t-mobile. i take it your on at&t or something? i have a friend who has a g1 with no data plan and he sends me picture messages. (he's also on t-mobile)
im on t mobile. i have unlimited messaging but from day 1 could never send an mms or recieve one. there used to be a have with the apns but it doesnt work anymore.

waaaat? i've always got them without any data plan whatsoever. and i know the people who send them to me don't have one. maybe we're just lucky and i should shut my mouth before t-mobile finds out.
edit: dunno about mytouch, though. i've always had a data plan on this. but blackberry didn't need one and nor did any other phone. but all my other phones before blackberry weren't considered "smartphones."
weird...
yeah, i cant download the mms message, pressing the button to downlad does nothing...

like you can't see the picture you get? or it just tells you that you have a mms and you have to download? it never asks me anything like that. i've seen another person say that they can't download mms (even with data plan because of an error), but i just get the mms without clicking download.
maybe they don't actually have a data plan, though. people here seem to tend to leave out the most important details. i don't know how to help, though. i would have put money on it you could get a picture message without a data plan as long as you had texting.
are you sure you have a G1?! ha but i thought everone had to dowload the mms before you could actually see it. Thats all ive heard and if been trying to find the answer for a year and a half! I thought it was wierd that whe my friend when up north and it switched to AT&T he was able to recieve picture messages. I get a notification that says 0 new messages which is weird...but then i have the message in the thread with only a download button. i have an "mms notification" it says when i long press and click details on the message.
anyone?
Is there other people who can recieve mms without the data plan on t mobile?
I do have unllimited messaging, and i could recieve them on everyother phone i owned except my g1.
i have a mytouch, and no i never have to click download... i gust get a new msg and it has a little paper clip on it and it shows directly up... now thats for PICTURE... ones that have music or something i have to click download but as for pictures not once have i had to download... am i supposed to have to click download on picture? lol. that's odd as hell.
What's up everyone. If u have a g1 or my touch with tmobile and u don't have a data plan and u can send and receive mms please post ur apn settings. I think that's why we are here. Thanks.
im going to bump this thread because the issue hasnt been resolved yet
If you root a mytouch can you then use MMS again? I want to get the MyTouch slide but with no data plan.
i am having the same issue except sometimes i get the pics and sometimes i don't i think it depends on the size and maybe what network the sender is on. I changed some settings and started getting pics but when I tried it again i'm not getting them. still working on it. I have a G1
I have a G1 with the new prepaid plan and no data plan, i can recieve pictures and videos but i cant send any at all. Does anyone know why?
Your phone has to have a data connection to receive MMS. With MMS, the network basically sends your phone a special SMS message containing a URL and your phone then loads the URL to retrieve the full MMS message.
You shouldn't need a data plan to use MMS as your carrier should charge visits to that URL as MMS and not regular data usage, but you do still need your carrier's APN setup in your phone.

So, what are the APN settings for T-mobile?
I have a similar problem, I get free mms from my carrier but to receive them I need to turn on data, If its off I receive a message with download button but it says: cant download atm, try again later. If I have data on it downloads perfectly. To do this you need to have 2 apns configured, one for net and one for mms, on your provider webpage there should be the configurations you need around the suport areas, or ask someone with same phone and carrier to copy them.
My problem is that I have a data plan, and so when I turn on the data it starts synchronizing, downloading mails etc... and wastes my limited badwidth.
Now I do remember on my stock phone I used to be able to grab mms with data off.. anyone have a clue about how to do it? or some app that blocks net but not the mms?

[Q] MMS no data plan

I have a 7mo old nephew and every now and then his parents send pictures of funny/cute stuff he does but I'm unable to receive them.
I get a download button but on wifi I can't retrieve it. I have data disabled because I don't have the $15/mo for a data plan.
I'd be willing to pay the $0.30/mms to be able to see the occasional pic.
Is there anyway I could disable auto update and background data and be able to turn on data when I get a pic from them and be able to get it without getting slapped with a data plan? <(really stupid policy of AT&T's)
I know I could with my non-smart phone (samsung eternity) but I don't know how to do that with the Samsung Captivate (cyanogenmod). I was told at&t does a sweep for smartphones w/out data and auto add it and the only way to avoid it was to keep data off at all times.
Also what MMS settings do I need? I'll admit to being a complete n00b on all this. thanks.
Thanks for any help!
You could try following the instructions on this post, down toward the bottom, to alter your APN settings for MMS only: http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...y-s-gt-i9000-mms-internet-settings-t-apn.html
The problem is that MMS is sent over the data connection and not over WiFi, so you will have to turn your mobile data on make it work. The APN settings would appear to limit your traffic to MMS, but whether this would trigger AT&T's data plan policy, I have no clue. Personally, I wouldn't risk it.
As an alternative, they can send the MMS to your email address instead of your phone number and you could get it that way.
Is it possible to tell your family to send the pictures to your gmail account?

Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
After going by AT&T I found some mixed news:
Good: Our family unlimited messaging plan includes MMS.
Bad: AT&T detected last month that I have a smartphone (with data off) and added generously the $25/mo data plan w/out so much a text message.
I got them to drop it to the $15 plan and have to call customer service monday to see about getting a partial refund since I didn't use it.
On a semi related note: Since it looks like I may be getting a non-smartphone, what is a good touchscreen phone that does NOT require a data plan?
Thanks for all the help everyone
Of course they did. This is the most unfair rule ever; it's like AT&T telling you how you should use your phone. That sucks
I don't know anything about current phones that are out. I would just go to an AT&T store and play with them to find one you like.
Agreed. I understand that in the long run less people probably complain about a data plan than the accidental/negligent data charges that would probably happen but it's still unfair to give NO other option.
I swapped to my backup phone, the samsung eternity. Descent phone but screen is inaccurate, calendar function is tiresome and no threaded texting (good music though). I will look at what phones they have (including GoPhones) and then get one online, who wants to waste an upgrade on a lesser phone?
On a similar note, will Straight Talk or any other prepay phones work with AT&T sim? I know GoPhone will.
I plan to get the data removed and try for at least a partial credit for the last month of data I didn't use.
I may ebay the Captivate since who knows how long it may be till I can afford a data plan.

Lycamobile

If you haven't heard of LycaMobile...It's a T-Mobile MNVO..
My AHD is Carrier Unlocked so I can use AT&T or T-Mobile, I got tired of paying 45+taxes for StraightTalk (AT&T) since I am mostly on wifi and don't really need the speed when I am not...
so i bought an unlock code and switched to Ultramobile last month because of their 19$ plan but they only give you 50mb of data
that was an issue for me and I didn't want to pay 39$ for their unlimited 2g when I could get GoSmart for 35$...
The other day I learned Lyca has the same plan as Gosmart but for 29$ (unlimited talk, text and 2g)
I waited too long to port my number from Ultra and lost it....
I've had Lyca service less then 2 hours and so far the only problem I had is their porting process,
It wasn't as fast as it was for me when I ported from other companies....
I've ported my number to and from a few companies and it always took less then 10 hours
I stupidly assumed 12 hours would be enough this time aswell,
Anyway 29$ sounds like a great deal I just hope I don't end up having issues with their service,
I figured I'd let people in the AHD section know about Lyca and post updates if I have any problems.
Maybe others have had experience with Lycamobile .

I've had lyca for almost 7 days now and at first I was having signal issues at home and it made it hard to have long text messages it was annoying, texts would get stuck at sending but seems good now after i went to Holoblur from Liquidsmooth.
Originally i thought lyca went to unlimited 2g after the first 50mb but turns out it's 3g.
To to be sure i downloaded a 100mb video last night, at 1.5-2mb which seems to be my average data speed on lyca since day 1... anyway i'm still getting 1.5-2mb on speedtest.net today so Lyca is even more worth it for me now that i know it's unlimited 3g instead of a slow 2g..
I used to use testmy.net in the browser but for some reason after i flashed holoblur 0.9 last night testmy.net says Forbidden.
So at the moment the only issue I have with Lyca is that they don't have mms but i can live with that if my data speeds stay at at least 800kbs.
I also forgot to backup my contacts when i flashed holoblur 0.9 last night , I had 2 contacts i had added that day...I am lucky Lyca keeps a call log online.

Sounds good. Although do they have any 3G plans.
I don't mind a 250mb 3G plan vs unlimited 2G
http://www.lycamobile.us/en/national-plans
It's a similar concept to T-Mobile's in that you get an allotment of 4G (3G) data and then it goes to 2G speed. Looks very interesting. Thinking of switching to their 1GB plan after I use up all my T-Mobile credit. The $20 credit for international calls is a winner for me. I assume there's no LTE,
I just saw a guy handing out lycamobile booklets, I told him have the service we talked a minute..I mentioned my plan and 2g ..he claimed it goes to 3g after that 50mb of 4g...I hope that's true. 3g is like up to 800kbs or something iirc...so that would be great.
That sounds like a pretty sweet phone plan. I might switch over to it once my contract ends. Do let us know if there are any problems you may run into.:good:

1 month of service and I'm happy so far, feels like as time goes by my service becomes more stable. The first 2 weeks I was losing service often and had problems sending texts and had a few calls drop.. but been good the past week or so.
Gave them a try as well. I only used them temporarily to place international calls but the one time that I did it whle driving I didn't see any difference with the T-Mobile service. So far,
- Call quality to landlines in Europe was excellent.
- Call quality to cell phones in Europe was decent. On a single incidence the volume was too loud and it distorted. I don't think this was Lycamobile's problem.
- I can't get the online recharge to work. I enter all my info and at the end I get the message the transaction failed. I see the temporary authorization on my credit card, and it later goes away. I was only able to add credit by going to a local cell phone store.
- Customer service is in India. They are not allowed to request credit card information, so they couldn't do the recharge.
- Online customer service only got me the autorespond email and nothing after that.
- Calls (pay as you go) are charged at 20+ seconds longer than the call as timed by the phone itself.
- The sim card doesn't have the APN info for data. I didn't want to use data, so I didn't enter an APN.
- International roaming in Europe worked fine and at 46¢/min it beats AT&T and T-Mobile's $1.29, $1.39 or $1.79, and matches what European pay as you go carriers charge when roaming within Europe.
Given that I couldn't get any credit card to process on their website, I couldn't buy a sim card from their website either. One store sold them for $10, another for $5, and they go for 99¢ on eBay.
I think I'm going to try h2o next. Their $49/mo plans are very comparable: unlimited voice, domestic and international texts, 1GB data. Lycamoble gives $20 credit for international calls (1¢/min land-8¢/min cell in Europe) whereas h2o has unlimited landline (certain countries) and gives $40 credit for 20-30¢/min (in Europe) calls to cell phones. h2o also has mms but doesn't roam internationally.
Lyca sends free sims. And the first time I called customer support the person sounded Indian but every time after that I have gotten customer support from the UK.

- Lycamoble responded via email that calls are billed from the time the call is placed (including ring time)

yeah i also get mine for free about a month ago, happy w the service so far! :good::good:
They did end up losing some text messages for me. I confirmed that these were sent as SMS and not MMS.
Also, they automatically put me on the $39 plan without me doing so, when I added $40 credit in my account. Even though I requested to cancel the auto-renew and got the confirmation text, I still got a text on the renewal date that there were insufficient funds to renew my plan.
Other annoyances:
There is no voicemail integration. I never got the voicemail notification icon when I had voicemail. They sent a text message instead. Also, the voicemail service number did not get automatically integrated and I had to program it myself.
My number did not show in the phone info screen. Instead it showed +10000000000.

I also noticed international SMS plan doesn't work or I'm using some other APN settings. Can anyone confirm?
I'm using Google voice so MMS is no big deal for me actually. I don't use anyways lol.
I also don't what why the number appears like that but they have a dial up combination that shows the number on your screen, I guess it was *613#
And my phone always shows R (stands for roaming) and doesn't show the data speed letter like 4g 3g etc
Did anyone have the same issue too?
Note: I currently break my Atrix HD these were the issues I faced when it was working.

I used the 29$ plan for a few months and it was good service, i hardly use my phone so i stopped using a plan a few months ago and i had like 17$ on my account, atm it's only down to $8, at 2c per min ,since i don't text i am only paying a few $ a month for my service.

Activating sim card on S8--Not Compatible With Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan

I purchased a unlocked Galaxy S8 on Amazon. I also purchased a nano sim card and just activated it through the web site. I then get a message "Device ID xxxxxx is not compatible with your current features and requires a change of features."
I currently have a grandfathered plan with unlimited data and therefore am not happy about losing it. Anyone know if there is a way around this? Would it make any difference that it is a unlocked versus Verizon model? I also have a business account and wonder if this makes any difference.
Further questions related to this
On further review of this, I'm not sure if it is actually taking away the unlimited data.
My current bill describes my grandfathered plan as, "Email & Web Unlimited"
The choices they are now offering begins with one called "Unlimited Email & Web for Smartphones (personal email).
I'm wondering if they are the same. I'm questioning this because of the message that the device "is not compatible with your current features and requires a change of features." Plus it then offers a choice of unlimited data plans. Does this mean that the unlimited web is not data beyond web browsing? Does it include data for apps, audio streaming, video streaming?
The description doesn't make it clear either. It says:
Get unlimited access to the Internet and your personal email accounts.
Check and send personal emails when you're out and about.
Access up to 10 POP3 and IMAP email accounts.
Enjoy unlimited Internet access.
The Email and Web for BlackBerry and Email and Web for Smartphone Features are designed for personal, consumer use and are not compatible with some Internet email service offerings or with email applications utilizing Smartphone Enterprise Server, Smartphone Desktop Software, Wireless Sync or Wireless Sync Enterprise Server or Good™ Mobile Messaging. These features cannot be used to tether your device to laptops, personal computers or other devices for any purpose other than syncing of data; any other use is not permitted using these features. Service is only available in the National Enhanced Services and Extended National Enhanced Services Rate and Coverage Areas. See information on roaming in Canada and Mexico at www.verizonwireless.com/naroaming.
I got it figured out. I went to the last screen before confirmation and was able to compare everything from old to new phone. In this screen both described the data plan as Unlimited Email and Web.
For the most part everything is the same except 1) the price is lower because my 20% business account discount applies to the data plan now but didn't before, and 2) while I didn't pick it, it placed a block on video calling (but says this doesn't apply to third party apps). As I never used Verizon's video calling, this doesn't matter.
I went ahead and activated and data is present as before. Hopefully there won't be any surprises down the road, but for now all seems well.
